En 1995, la Compagnie minière Québec Cartier a mis de l'avant un projet de recherche sur la modélisation de l'écoulement des gaz pour ses fours de frittage à l'usine de bouletage de Port-Cartier. Cette démarche s'inscrivait dans un large processus de collaboration avec l'Université Laval et le Consortium de Recherche Minérale (COREM). L'usine de bouletage possède deux fours de frittage d'une capacité moyenne de 600 tonnes/heure pour chacun des fours. Les fours de frittage sont des systèmes complexes d'échange de chaleur qui fonctionnent à contre-courant (le débit de boulettes versus les débits de gaz). Pour rencontrer les spécifications reliées aux propriétés mécaniques des boulettes, le processus de fabrication requiert des mesures et un contrôle des systèmes très précis. L'information fournie par plus de 70 capteurs (pression, température, puissance, vitesse, hauteur de lit, position de volet....) est utilisée pour manipuler une vitesse de grille, cinq ventilateurs et neuf zones de brûleurs. Malheureusement, les variables qui influencent fortement les mécanismes de frittage, c'est-à-dire les débits de gaz dans les différentes zones du four ainsi que la masse de boulettes qui circulent ne sont pas mesurées. Une méthode est donc proposée pour une estimation en ligne de ces variables. La méthode est basée sur un arrangement de 65 équations reliant pressions, températures et débits de gaz dans les conduites, les ventilateurs, les sections du lit et les fuites (Gosselin, 1998). Pour des raisons de simplification de cet article, seul un sous-système du four sera présenté. Les techniques de réconciliation des données reliées à la conservation de la matière et de l'énergie montrent que la mesure en ligne du débit de boulettes mène à l'estimation des débits de gaz et apporte des avantages intéressants pour le contrôle des variables stratégiques des fours.

The Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde S.A.A, a subsidiary of Phelps Dodge Mining Company, operates a copper mining facility located in southern Peru. This "mine-forleach" operation currently produces 90,000 mtpy of copper cathode from secondary sulfide ore utilizing crushing, leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning processes. The leach solution handling and application rates have undergone constant development over the years. This paper discusses the improvements in leach application designed to: 1) satisfy the needs of the "lixiviant request rate", which requires the use of application rates as low as 3.5 L/h/m2 and as high as 15 Llhlm2 with variable rest periods according to the leach kinetics, and 2) alleviate the poor solution distribution on the surface of the leach heaps inherent to drip emitters. Low application rates result in poor surface solution distribution and the formation of upside down cones of dry, non-leached material in the top meter of stacked ore, with heavy jarosite and iron salt precipitation; moreover, ferric iron is lost as insoluble precipitates. On the other hand, high unit flows associated with poor agglomerate quality can lead to uneven solution flow patterns within the heap leading to solution short-circuits, fines migration, and ponding with adverse effects on acid consumption and recovery.

"HistoricalBARYTES was mined in Nova Scotia as early as 1874 from a deposit at Five Islands, on the north shore of Minas Basin. The first record of the presence of the mineral at the Walton site appears in a report by Selwyn in l893, who states: ""Barytes in considerable quantity occurs in veins in lime-stones at Walton and Pembroke"". The exact site of the present workings was marked •on a map published by Fletcher in 1905.The economic •possibilities of this deposit, however, were not recognized until 1940, at which time we were at war with Germany, who up to that time had supplied 50 per cent of the world's requirements.At that time the Nova Scotia Department of Mines, recognizing the need for certain strategic minerals, induced Canadian Industrial Minerals, Limited, to send prospectors into 'the area to look for manganese. No manganese deposits were found, but a deposit of barytes was directed to their attention, and exploration and development work on the occurrence was proceeded with.IntroductionThe south shore of Minas Basin between the Avon river at Windsor and the Stewiacke river at Maitland has long been known as a potential source of mineral wealth. It had attracted the attention of mineralogists and in the past had produced considerable tonnages of manganese ore and gypsum. Depletion of ore in surface and near surface deposits resulted in a dwindling production, until today only deposits of gypsum are worked."

The process of gas purging in molten aluminium has been an industrial practice in Europe for many years. The advantages are a reduction in the hydrogen content and impurities in the melt, as well as a homogenisation of the temperature and chemical analysis in the molten metal. Formerly used lances or impellers are being replaced by porous plugs which are installed at the bottom of the furnace. This special product of RHI Refractories has proven its efficiency in primary melting as well as in die cast, sheet and extrusion plants.

The progressive depletion of ore available at shallow depths in several underground mines around the world means that underground mining operations would increasingly be carried out at greater depths and therefore at higher temperatures. However, our understanding of the effect of hot temperatures on the response (mechanical, economical, environmental) of cemented paste backfill (CPB) is still limited. Hence, an extensive laboratory investigation was conducted to study the performance of young and aged CPB, in response to deep mine temperatures. Several CPB samples with different compositions, cured at different temperatures (20 to 50°C) and different times (7 to 160 days) were tested regarding their mechanical properties, economical performance (binder consumption) and microstructural properties. The results show that hot temperatures significantly affect the performance properties of CPB at young and advanced ages. An increase in the curing temperature leads to a considerable improvement of the rate of gain of CPB strength and also to a significant increase of the strength of CPBs studied. CBP samples cured at hot temperatures show lower binder consumption and finer pore structure. Results of this study could serve as background information for the development of optimal mine backfill design procedures.

"Gravity profiles were established over five known Middle Silurian pinnacle reef s in Lambton County, southwestern Ontario. The profiles were approximately 3 km long, with stations every 60 m. Four fairly recent technological developments were used which now make the gravity method relatively efficient and inexpensive compared to the techniques available two decades ago. These are: (1) a La Coste-Romberg model G gravimeter to measure the gravitational attraction with a sensitivity of 0.01 mgal; (2) a Sokkisha model B-2 semiautomatic engineers level to measure the station elevations with an accuracy of 0.5 cm; (3) a Huntec FS-3 hammer reflection seismograph to determine the overburden thickness to an accuracy of ± 7%; and (4) a modern microcomputer to process the data sets and mathematically filter the gravity values. Thus, two men can measure and analyze approximately 1 km of profile per day and obtain the residual gravity profile to an accuracy of ± 0. 05 mgal. Positive gravity anomalies of 0.17 to 0.72 mgal were observed along all five profiles that approximately delineate the dimensions of the known pinnacle reefs, which have an average height of 120 m, diameter of 1500 m and depth to top of 575 m. The relative ease of the gravity survey method makes it a cost-effective technique for hydrocarbon exploration in southwestern Ontario. IntroductionPinnacle reefs are important sources of oil and gas. Although the pinnacle reefs in southwestern Ontario are small, they may contain commercial pools of oil and gas because of their proximity to refineries. They are also useful for subsurface storage of gas to meet the winter surge in gas demand.At present, geophysical exploration for new pinnacle reefs is done primarily by relatively expensive seismic methods, which are also limited in southwestern Ontario by prohibitions on blasting. Gravity methods of exploration were attempted more than two decades ago in this region. (Pohly, 1954); however, the level of technology at that time made the method marginal in sensitivity and quite expensive. Several subsequent developments- gravimeters with greater sensitivity and operating ease, ""self-levelling"" levels for elevation control, hammer seismic reflection units for determining overburden thickness and portable microcomputers for efficient data analysis-have significantly improved the precision and cost effectiveness of the gravity method. Five known pinnacle reefs were selected in Lambton County, southwestern Ontario (Fig. 1), to test the effectiveness of integrating these developments to locate and define additional reefs. Isolated reefs were chosen to avoid the problem of the gravity effect s of one reef interfering with those of a neighbouring reef. The surveys were facilitated by choosing reefs with a concession road passing directly over them ."

Mine lateral development advance rates currently average about 5 metres (16.5 ft.) per day. Granduc Tunnel hit 35.1 metres (115 ft.) on their best day, 12 km from the portal, single heading forty-three years ago. This Canadian mining record remains an excellent example of rapid drill and blast excavation with suggestions for improving current practice.

"The objective of this paper is to review the coal basins in the Canadian part of the Western Cordillera to aid their understanding, and to aid in finding and proving places of economic coal mining potential. Coal occurs in eugeosynclinal basins in the Western Cordillera which evolved through three stages: -from systems of volcanic arcs in the Late Jurassic to mid-Cretaceous; -through an intermediate stage with deposition in increasingly restricted successor basins in Jurassic to Early Tertiary; -to a continental stage by the Eocene. Minor coal seams occur usually in late volcanic arc stage sediments bur they can be locally thick as they are on Queen Charlotte Islands. Successor basins usually show a marine-paralic-limnic evolurion. Signijicanr coal deposits occur in the tarter two sequences in the Whirehorse (Tantalus) and Bowser (SkeenaSusrur) basins. Currenr activities are intensive in the more accessible Bowser Basin, for example at Telkwa, Susrut River and on the Groundhog coal field. On Vancouver Island major coal seams occur in cyclic sediments, but the more accessible deposits are mined our. Exploration renewed recently in the less accessible northern part of the Island, for example Quinsam, for surface mineable coal. The Western Cordillera is a mosaic of allochtonous tectonic blocks. They originated from the south and were displaced northward by several hundred kilometres. Many Tertiary coal basins are related to strikeslip transcurrent faults along which the later part of displacement took place, for example the Dawson coal area in the Tintina Trench. Tensional and dipslip normal faulting also created or enhanced sites for thick peat accumulation. For example at Hat Creek 280 m of coal occur in a 550 m section. Secondary structures are often better exploration targets than the main fault zones. Pluvial and alluvial fan environments away from the main drainage are usually the favourable sites for thicker and cleaner coal deposition."

This paper deals with the power plant at Cassiar Asbestos Corporation Ltd., Cassiar, B.C. It discusses the units installed in the plant, the distribution of power and the costs involved. The efficiencies and economics of this power plant are considered to be somewhat better than average. Introduction C ASSIAR Asbestos Corporation's power plant had its inception in 1952 with a 15-by 15-ft. log cabin containing two International Harvester diesel generator sets of 50 kw. total generating capacity. Over the years, it has grown to its present size -an 80 by 82 ft. by 35-ft.-high rigid-frame Butler building housing eight 2,300-volt diesel generating sets, a 2,300-volt distributing switchboard, a 550-volt auxiliary panel, three air compressors, six heat exchangers and other related equipment. The units in the power plant, numbered according to their order of placement, are rated as shown in Table I. The total generating capacity of the plant is 3,673 kw. "The Lucky Jim mine is at Zincton in Slocan mmmg division; on the Kaslo-Nakusp branch of the Canadian Pacific railway. It is owned and operated by Zincton Mines; Limited; a subsidiary of Sheep Creek Gold Mines; Limited. The mine is far in the lead in the production of zinc in the Slocan. Its recorded production from concentrates and shipping ore was 102; 260; 191 pounds of zinc to the end of 1945.GENERAL GEOLOGY With the exception of acidic dykes the rocks near the Lucky Jim mine belong to the Slocan series, which is Triassic in age and consists principally of argillaceous rocks. It disconformably overlies greenstones of the Triassic Kaslo series about 3 miles to the northeast, and is cut by granitic rocks of the Nelson batholith 5 miles to the southeast.The sedimentary rocks in this area are best referred to on the whole as slates. They lie within the more fissile basal part of the Slocan series. The term 'slate belt' conveniently distinguishes this area of rocks characterized by slaty cleavage from the more massive argillites that are more characteristic of the Slocan as a whole. The contact between the slaty and massive argillites lies ½ mile southwest of the mine."

"On August 8, 1989, the Minister of Finance released a technical paper which sets out many of the details of a proposed 9% federal value-added tax to be called the ""Goods and Services Tax"". The GST, which is scheduled to be implemented with effect from January 1, 1991, will affect all Canadians in different ways and to varying degrees. The mining industry itself should, by and large, benefit from the new tax.IntroductionOn January 1, 1991, it is proposed that the existing federal sales tax will be replaced by a new sales tax - the Goods and Services Tax (GST). GST will be leviedat a rate of 9% on most goods and services consumed in Canada.How it will WorkThe GST will be a tax on the final consumption of goods and services. It differs from a retail sales tax in that it will be collected throughout the production and distribution chain. However, the net effect of the tax paid on a particular good or service will be equivalent. The example above (next column) illustrates the application of the GST to the production and sale of a chair.Illustration of GST for a ChairEssentially, the total tax will equal 9% of the sale price to the final consumer. "Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co. Ltd. (HBM&S) started up a zinc plant and smelter in late 1930, employing technology of that period. The zinc plant has since converted from a roast/leach operation to a two stage pressure leach operation to eliminate sulphur dioxide emissioms. The smelter, however, is still continuing with much of the original roaster/reverberatory furnace technology. This paper reviews the process flow of the copper smelter, with some comments on past and recent changes.Smelter FlowsheetPrior to July 1993, the HBM&S smelter operation consisted of seven areas, namely feed preparation, roasters, reverberatory furnace, converters, anode casting, fuming plant, and dust collection. A simplified smelter flowsheet is shown in Figure 1. The data for tonnage of materials moving through the circuit are presented in Tables I to 4, and are representative of the time period from July 1992 to June 1993. A change in the zinc plant technology in 1993 resulted in the elimination of a zinc-bearing sulphide leach residue from the smelter feed blend, thereby greatly reducing the zinc content of slag produced in the smelter. Consequently the fuming plant and ancillary equipment, such as the drying plant, were shut down. These areas will, however, be described. With the closure of the zinc fuming furnaces all the slag from the reverberatory furnace is now discarded to stockpile.The over-all smelter metal recoveries are 96% for Cu and rn.5010 for Au and Ag. Figures 2 and 4 indicate historical production numbers of copper, silver and gold, respectively. A review of the minor element distribution in the smelter can be found elsewhere."

A prolonged breakdown of a critical component can have a significant effect on companies' bottom-line results. As more technologically sophisticated equipment is introduced, maintenance costs become an increasingly important factor for mining companies.Fortunately, sound modern management principles are being used more often in maintenance departments. "Aggregates are the low-cost mineral raw material of building construction. Large volumes of aggregate are consumed each year. The availability of aggregates in southern Ontario is discussed in the context of the geological formations in which they occur. Sand and gravel are abundant in glacial deposits and in recent sediments. A knowledge of the glacial history is important for their discovery. Bedrock formations provide a variety of aggregates in Ontario. Knowledge of the rock types involved and of the depth of overburden are important for evaluation of the aggregate potential of bedrock resources in an area. Utilization of available resources intensifies as the population increases. Urban development makes it progressively more difficult to satisfy the demands of the construction industry. The effects of urban development on the aggregate resource base of an area are illustrated by developments and consumption statistics in the Toronto- centred region. There is an obvious need for a comprehensive survey of available resources in urban areas to serve as a guide in land-use planning. To fill this need, staff members of the Industrial Minerals Section, Geological Branch, Ontario Department of Mines and Northern Affairs, are engaged in mapping projects and mineral resource studies in southern Ontario as well as in some urban areas of northern Ontario."

"The requirements for a finer grind at Heath Steele have resulted in the investigation of agitated milling as a cost effective alternative to conventional tumbling ball mills.The grinding unit is a vertically agitated, or stirred ball mill. Grinding occurs as the result of the motion of a single vertical rotor equipped with protruding pins which impart a stirring action to the ball charge. A comparative evaluation of a 30 kW SALA Agitated Mill (SAM), and a 1.5 m x 2.5 m copper-lead regrind ball mill has been conducted at Heath Steele.An overview of agitated milling as it applies to the reduction of sulphide ore will be the primary topic for discussion. Specific parameters including energy efficiency, media consumption, operating costs, and the mechanical aspects of the SAM operation will be presented.Evaluation of the agitated mill has shown that improved grinding performance at much lower work indices than those of the conventional ball mill is possible. Media consumption has proven to be comparable on an average g/kWh basis, but the mechanical availability of the mill has been low.INTRODUCTIONConventional tumbling ball mill grinding has proven to be an energy inefficient process. Energy losses occurring within the ball mill itself can be attributed to particle friction without breakage, kinetic and potential energy losses, plastic and elastic deformation and the production of heat and sound (Lynch, 1977). It can be generally stated that a certain amount of the input energy will be converted to another form as a necessary by-product of particle breakage. Theoretical interpretation of experimental results indicate that the energy required for breaking the ore particles in a ball mill varies between I% and 25% of the total energy input (SME, 1985)."

La Mine Agnico-Eagle division Laronde situé à Cadillac, est un producteur d?or, d?argent, de cuivre et de zinc. Cette propriété est situé dans les cantons Bousquet-Cadillac le long d?une des ceintures géologiques les plus productives au monde. La mine Laronde a débuté la production en octobre 1988 à un rythme de 1360 tonnes par jour. Ensuite, elle a augmenté son rythme de production successivement à 1800 TPJ en 1990, 3300 TPJ en janvier 2000 et 4500 TPJ en octobre 2000. Agnico-Eagle, fondé par feu Paul Penna, a toujours eu comme politique la participation des employés aux décisions de la compagnie pour le déveleppement de celle-ci. Cet écrit va permettre de mieux comprendre la façon dont la division fût développé.

"Smelter Feed Preparation Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited, Sudbury Operations, operate 4 mills and a smelter to produce Bessemer Ni-Cu matte for refining in Norway. Approximately 1400 tons of Ni-Cu concentrate are produced daily which are dried from a filter cake containing 14% moisture to 7.5% moisture pellets. Concentrate drying is done by 4 rotary dryers as shown in the 'Dryer Performance Data' at four separate locations. The dryers all form part of the feed preparation stage prior to sintering.The rate at which concentrate can be produced through the Sinter Plant largely depends on the quality of the dried product which makes up the feed. A feed consisting of mostly hardened pellets will sinter much faster than a feed which consists of broken pellets and dust. Dryer products require:1. Good green strength to survive shipment and handling.2. Correct moisture content.3. Sizing within a range ideally from 1/4"" to 10 mesh in diameter.Dryer performance data is shown in Table 1. Capital costs between the two types of dryers are comparable with the Roto-Louvre producing generally a larger better-formed pellet. Dryer feeds differ in that at both Hardy and Fecunis, Ni-Cu concentrate filter cake is the only feed while at the Falconbridge slurry plant the dryer feed can consist of up to 10% by weight of smelter flue dust resulting in a combined concentrate-dust pellet for feeding to the Sinter Plant. To the Falconbridge Sinter Plant dryer, dust and limestone are added for the smelting process in addition to Ni-Cu concentrate."

THE subject of taxes appears to engage our attention altogether too lightly. At least it would seem that, notwithstanding the increase in the cost of government, and its concomitant increased taxation, little constructive work is being done with a view to solving the problem of increased taxes. I believe that the inattention of the public generally to the subject of increased taxation is due largely to the fact that shareholders are not advised of the amount of taxes paid by industry. Were companies to advise their shareholders the amount of monies paid or payable out of each year's earnings for taxes in one form or another, and were such amounts compared with the amounts available for distribution to shareholders, the effect would be a general demand for more equitable taxation methods. While I am not unmindful of the burdens and inequities in taxation confronting industry generally, I believe that the mining industry in this Province does not fully appreciate the burden represented by the costs of taxation. My reason for this belief is based partly upon1the fact that no serious effort has so far been made to devise some means By which the mining industry in British Columbia might protect itself against the ever-increasing burden of taxation. In addition to this fact the widely diverse nature of mining in British Columbia makes the accumulation of comparable data a problem which, so far as I can ascertain, has never been attempted in a manner which would be authoritative. It should not be necessary to cite the effects of this burden upon any one mining company or upon any branch of the mining industry, such as coal mining, placer mining, base-metal mining, or the precious-metal mines. In my opinion, the operation of our mines by large corporations is conducive to the payment of taxes with much less protest than would be the case were the taxes being taken out of the earnings of just a few partners or a very few shareholders. We appear to be too unmindful of the taxes, paid by mining companies, of a kind that are not so prominently brought to our attention as are the taxes which are calculated upon the taxable income of the company at the end of its fiscal year. British Columbian mining companies pay many other taxes besides those which are calculated upon taxable income. Among these are school taxes, property taxes, gasoline taxes, mineral taxes, coal royalty, to say nothing of fuel-oil tax, sales tax, and excise taxes.
