Adsorption/thermal desorption with sorbent cartridges and analytical method using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC/MS) was developed for the determination of tetrafluoromethane (CF4) and hexafluoroethane (C2F6) emitted from primary aluminum smelters. A customized cartridge was built like a packed column with a stainless steel tube filled with a specific resin. The optimization of adsorption and desorption parameters was carried out to support the PFC sampling for all aluminum production technologies. The proposed method showed good linearity for concentrations ranging from 10 to 500 ppbv for CF4 and from 5 to 500 ppbv for C2F6 with correlation coefficients above 0.999. In certain conditions, the detection limits of the analytical method reached 0.3 ppbv for CF4 and 0.15 ppbv for C2F6- Using this methodology, a field campaign was carried out using a sequential sampler allowing the simultaneous sampling of PFC with cartridges and sampling bags. The results showed no significant difference (t-test) between the two sampling technologies and no breakthrough was observed from the cartridges .

"When it comes to new mines being developed, there is a general industry consensus that most low-hanging fruit has been picked. Many projects currently in the mine development pipeline have been around for decades, but were held back because of technical challenges. Future development of these deposits will likely require access to the public capital markets, and in Canada that means providing scientific and technical disclosure on these deposits in compliance with NI 43-101. As many of these “challenged” projects have metallurgical issues, the companies that own the projects need to ensure their metallurgical Qualified Persons provide transparent disclosure regarding proposed solutions to those issues.This paper provides an overview of the disclosure requirements under NI 43-101 that are pertinent to metallurgists, and other Qualified Persons who prepare technical disclosure regarding the metallurgical characteristics of a mineral project. It lists the triggers for a technical report under NI 43-101 and Canadian stock exchange policies, and identifies the sections of the report that should involve input from a metallurgist or process engineer. The Kemess Mine tailings impoundment is retained behind an earthfill and rockfill dam that, when complete, will measure about 140 m in height with a crest length in excess of 1 km. Due to weak foundation conditions, the dam must be raised at a very flat downstream slope approaching 7H:1V. This requires an enormous volume of fill to construct the downstream shell of the dam, which has a low permeability clayey till core and is raised via the centerline construction method. For the initial years of annual dam raising, from 1996 through 2002, the downstream shell of the dam was constructed with non acid generating waste rock from the open pit, 7 km distant and requiring an uphill haul with obvious cost implications. To reduce costs, and to reduce waste haulage constraints on mining schedules, feasibility studies were initiated for raising of the downstream shell using cycloned tailings sand as opposed to open pit waste. This required inclusion of flotation cells for removal of residual sulphides from the tailings to produce the non acid generating product mandated for the downstream shell of the dam. These studies were positive, and cycloned sand construction was initiated in December of 2002. This paper describes the experience gained with cycloned sand construction for the dam. Unique aspects include environmental controls given the sulphide-bearing ores, preparation of the existing shell of the dam for subsequent placement of hydraulically placed cycloned tailings sand, on-dam settling ponds, water management issues, reclamation of the sand dam for erosion control commensurate with the wet climate, and use of the system to construct an above-water beach of non acid generating tailings to increase the closure security of the structure. A particularly unique aspect of the Kemess experience is hydraulic fill operations extending throughout the coldest winter months, as compared to other operations where such placement has traditionally been considered non-viable through the winter months

"Aluminum alloy structural components f or aircraft designed prior to the early 1970s, were machined from 2024, 7075 and 7079 plate, bar and forgings in either the T3xxx of the T6xxx tempers. Protective treatments for these parts consisted of chromic acid anodizing and alkyd zinc chromate primer, plus a nitrocellulose lacquer for exterior parts.The major service problem with these parts was the frequent occurrence of exfoliation corrosion and stress corrosion cracking (S. C. C.). Therefore, 2024 and 7079 alloys, with min or exceptions, were not used in aircraft designed after the early 1970s. Replacement materials were 7075 and 7050 alloys in the overaged, exfoliation corrosion and S. C. C. resistant, T73xxx tempers.The use of improved materials together with the upgrading to chromated epoxy primers, polyurethane enamels and the introduction of water displacing corrosion inhibiting compounds have significantly reduced corrosion in aircraft. IntroductionThe prevention of corrosion in aircraft has been a challenge to aircraft designers for many decades. With the design of the first all-metal aircraft, the designer and builder were thrust into the relatively new field of protective treatments as corrosion started to become more prevalent. This resulted from the continually increasing importance and wider utilization of aircraft, and their exposure to a wider variety of ho stile environments such as urban industrial pollution, high humidity tropical areas and salt ladened marine environments.Corrosion advanced another significant step when, after World War II, designs of new and larger aircraft utilized larger and thicker metal sections in the manufacture of structural components. With thicker mill products came higher residual heat treat, fabrication and assembly stresses resulting in an increased number of stress corrosion and exfoliation corrosion problems.Apart from the exterior environment, aircraft interior s can be exposed to a number of fluids which are either directly or indirectly responsible for corrosion. The most common of the fluids is water which is usually introduced as a result of condensation, especially in pressurized fuselages, and spillage from lavatories, galley s and electrolytes from batteries. These fluid s have a degrading effect on protective treatments and are also corrosive to the substrate metal. Fluids such as phosphate ester hydraulic fluids and ester based turbine engine lubricating oil s are not corrosive to the substrate metal, albeit they do contribute to corrosion by the degrading effect on protective treatments."

"Kinross Gold Corporation’s Mantos de Oro (MDO) gold/silver mine in northern Chile currently processes 15,000 tpd of oxide ores through a mill, whole ore cyanide leach plant followed by a Merrill-Crowe refinery. With the expected depletion of these oxide ores in a few years a new sulphide mineral deposit, Ladera-Farellón has been identified to potentially replace existing ore reserves. The deposit contains approximately 0.5g/t Au, 6g/t Ag and 0.5% Cu. The principal sulphide mineral in the deposit is enargite (Cu3AsS4) which hosts the majority of gold and silver and the copper. Direct cyanidation testwork has shown the sulphide mineral is refractory with a low gold recovery of 36% and silver recovery of 45%. Oxidation of the sulphides is required to liberate gold and silver and allow recovery of copper as an important pay-metal. Therefore, at MDO a new metallurgical process route with oxidation as a pretreatment step is required for viable treatment of such new sulphide mineralized material with acceptable recoveries of pay-metals.Analysis of flowsheet options was completed based on bench-scale and pilot scale metallurgical testwork as well as with reference to existing studies and operations. The process options investigated assume concentration of sulphides by flotation, followed by either pressure oxidation, bacteriological oxidation or roasting. Preliminary evaluation of flowsheet options focused on process risk, operability, technology availability and the economics of the project with emphasis on use of the existing metallurgical plant to reduce capital cost. Operating costs for each process option were also included in the relative analysis.The challenges of treatment of MDO sulphides, principally enargite and pyrite for recovery of gold, silver and copper center on fixation of arsenic and sulphur capture with environmentally acceptable disposal of residue tailings. This environmental focus was included in the process option selection and comparative analysis.This paper presents a review of the process options considered and highlights comparative advantages/disadvantages of each process with associated environmental issues. Preliminary conclusions are drawn on roasting as a potentially favorable process option for the treatment of MDO sulphides."

"An attempt to review the recent literature on comminution reveals at once that the subject has many ramifications and that the applications are so diverse that there are very few general statements which can be made.It. seems reasonable to start classification on the basis of size of material as Input to the comminution process. However, we find that this can only be done in a very imprecise manner.The initial step of breaking rock from its natural state of very large pieces in geological formations into sizes suitable for processing is accomplished by blasting. This step in the process has not been ex-amined in this project except to note that great changes have been made during the last decade or so in the explosives used, and in the method of handling them. We should determine what effect changes in mining methods can have on the need for crushing.The second step in the process is usually primary crushing, performed by gyratory or jaw crushers. The largest chunk which can be fed to a jaw crusher depends on the size of the machine, and should be larger than the largest fragment produced in the miring process. It is obvious that the larger the crusher, the less care required in mining to en¬sure the absence of rocks too large to be crushed. The optimum size of crusher to minimize overall cost of mining and reduction is not at all obvious, and no information on this point has come to light in this investigation.It is rather generally accepted that size reduction is most efficiently done in small stages, and that different machines have different opti¬mum size ranges of feed. For example, crushers are preferred for sizes above about 1"", rod mills for the range between 1"" and 0.1"", ball mills are preferred from 0.1""down to perhaps 10 microns, and vibratory mills, or jet mills, below 10 microns."

TODAY, man uses, at will, the land, the water, and the air to transport himself and his goods everywhere across the face of the world. He no longer thinks with wonder of the magic of conquering these elements - he takes his mastery of them for granted. He is, however, constantly striving to squeeze more and more efficiency from each mode of transport. Man's first method of transporting himself and his goods was, obviously, himself; then he acquired his first beast of burden - woman. Most other two-legged female animals carried their young around clinging to their fur. Human mothers were, generally speaking, furless and their offspring less 'Prehensile, and so slings and other trappings were invented to carry young children. Man's inventive genius soon adopted these devices for carrying other burdens, and for countless centuries woman carried all in order that man could walk unencumbered except by his weapons. Later other ?beasts of burden were trained and used, including dogs, horses, oxen, camels, etc. Man also discovered quite early that he could drag along the ground more than he could carry on his back.

It is an economic reality that the cost of corrosion is inevitable and that its cost should be incurred in the least expensive way. An economic evaluation technique to properly assess its relative impact is the Discounted Cash Flow Method. Various remedial and corrosion control measures are available and these, when coupled with a planned corrosion control program, help reduce the cost of corrosion.

"Ultramafic Ni ores present significant challenges in processing in that both recoveries and grades are not satisfactory, due to the presence of Mg silicates in large amounts. Significant quantities of xanthates and CMCs are generally used for their recovery by flotation. Additionally, given that some of these ores are processed under acidic conditions, CS2 generation due to xanthate decomposition presents some safety hazards. Technology to replace xanthate has been developed for which the safety and health issues are absent. Collector S-10294 shows significant improvements in Ni and overall S recovery at a dosing rate of one half that of xanthate. New polymeric modifiers have also been developed that help reduce the Mg content of the concentrates at very low dosages. The reagents are custom designed for use in normal or hypersaline water, and acid or alkaline conditions.INTRODUCTION The use of xanthates in sulfide mineral flotation is reported to have started as early as 1925 (Nagaraj 2005). The reagent is now ubiquitous in the mining industry, accounting for 40-50% of total collector consumption. In recent years, the development of more selective reagents has rendered xanthates largely obsolete in Cu flotation. However, xanthates continue to be sold in large amounts in the Au, PGM and Ni flotation industry, where bulk sulfide flotation is required. The low cost and easy availability is the largest driver for the use of xanthates in the minerals industry. Of particular interest to this study is the use of xanthates in the flotation of Ni sulfide ores. About 60% of the world’s annual nickel output is obtained from sulfide Ni ores (Hoatson, 2006). A strategically important category of these ores is the ultramafic hosted sulfides, such as those of Western Australia and Canada. These ores are characterized by low Ni grades (<1%), with the Ni minerals being pentlandite, violarite, millerite and mackinawite, and gangue minerals comprising an array of altered Mg silicates, mostly serpentines. The challenges associated with treating these ores are well documented (Eltham et al. 1973; Claridge et al. 1975). One challenge is that Ni recoveries from these ores are lower. This has been attributed to the increased pulp viscosity, as discussed in detail by Vasudevan et al., 2010. Additionally, Mg silicates tend to report to the concentrate in large quantities, which is problematic for two reasons: a) concentrate dilution, and b) the high melting point of Mg silicates tends accelerate wear on the refractory lining of smelters. This has been attributed to network transport to the froth phase via bubble flux and entrainment (Patra et al, 2010)."

There is a long history of coal production in Turkey with electric energy generated from power plants since the 1950s. However, the cost of power generation is high. Therefore, it has become necessary to find a means of decreasing production costs to become more competitive in a global market. This paper attempts to economically minimize the overall operating costs of a dragline-shovel-truck system applied at an open pit mine that has fed the Yatagan power plant since 1979, lowering the lignite production cost, and indirectly, the overall electricity generation unit cost. Systems currently in place, as a result of former optimization studies, are time-consuming and expensive to re-implement to comply with today’s very different geometric and economic conditions affecting mining operations. In such cases, rather than re-optimization, it is more viable to identify the parameters that affect the minimum unit cost, via a cost minimization study, allowing present mine equipment to be utilized more efficiently. Unit cost minimization analyses are subject to the capacity of the pool of mining equipment available, combined with the mining block geometry from pre-stripping onwards. In this overall unit cost minimization study, P&H shovels and CAT 777 trucks with capacities of 15 yd3 and 77 tons, respectively, were used in truck-shovel pre-stripping operations. A 65 yd3 Marion 8050 dragline was used to expose the overburden immediately over the coal seam. Pre-stripping bench heights varied from 8 m to 20 m and dragline bench heights from 20 m and 25 m were evaluated to minimize the unit cost of field operations. Total overburden extended to a depth of 60 m (35 m to 40 m for pre-stripping). Minimization analyses performed on the pre-stripping truck-shovel operation, prior to dragline operations, determined that the shovel bench height should be 15 m requiring a dragline bench height of 25 m.

Since its commercialization thirty years ago, the Recoflo® short bed ion exchange process has been extensively utilized for the recovery of a wide variety of acids and metal salts. In addition to a reduction in resin bed height from 200 cm to 300 cm to 15 cm to 60 cm, the process has a number of features such as utilization of fine mesh resins in a compressed bed which together make it ideal for a number of applications. The process has been extensively exploited, for example, in the metal finishing industry for recovery of valuable chemicals from electroplating, anodizing, etching and pickling wastes. More recently, it has also been applied in the primary metals industry for purification of copper electrolytes and metals recovery from leachates. The paper discusses several of these applications and some of the issues that were found to be key to their success.

"Experiments were performed with plant feeds with a continuous 1,8 m3 cell at Pyhasalmi mine with Cu flotation feed in order to test the applicability of the bubble surface area flux as an indicator of the flotation rate constant. It was found that bubble surface area flux could not predict the rate constants of coarse Cu containing fractions. In the middle size fraction, the correlation coefficient in the rate coefficient estimation was higher but not statistically significant. Only the fine fraction showed a linear relationship with a moderate correlation coefficient.The bubble surface area flux was shown not to be a function of the impeller velocity above a threshold value. The flux was an almost linear function of the superficial gas rate enabling to use the superficial gas rate instead of flux if the operation of an existing cell is to be estimated.INTRODUCTIONBubble area flux seems to offer a simple way of modeling flotation. It relates the flotation rate constant with the bubble surface area flux by a simple linear equation. Due to this, there has been a considerable interest in using the bubble area flux for flotation computations. It has even caused claims that a cell producing a high bubble surface area flux automatically produces a high rate constant and therefore a high recovery.This paper discusses some of the assumptions of the relationship and gives some plant results during two sampling campaigns.The bubble surface area flux s b is describing the area of bubbles available for flotation in a cell per unit area. ACCIDENT prevention as we know and understand it today is of comparatively recent origin. As a matter of fact, the Industrial Accident Prevention Association of Ontario, which is the oldest organization of its kind in the Dominion, celebrated its thirtieth anniversary only this year. On the other hand, one could say that the history of accident prevention is almost the history of mankind itself. In a general sense, every forward step that man has made throughout the centuries has been largely due to two things: (1) a desire for increased comfort, and (2) the need for safety; and, always, the need for safety has taken precedence over the desire for comfort. While it is true that hundreds of volumes have been published, dealing with the many aspects of accident prevention work, you cannot go to a library and pick out a book that has all the answers in it. Such a book has never been published-we are still looking for some of the answers. However, a good deal of real progress has been made.

Introduction In October, 1945, the Coal Division of the Institute appointed a Committee on The Use of Electricity in Coal Mines, with the following terms of reference: ?To study under which conditions in each deposit the use of electricity can be brought closer to the coal face and which types of electrical machinery can be recommended?. It was not until the beginning of this year (1946) that the Committee had a chance to convene and .discuss the conclusions which are embodied in this report. Mr. McLeod, as Chief Electrician of the Dominion Coal Company, is intimately concerned with that Company&apos;s installations, and Mr. McIsaac, as Electrical Inspector of Coal Mines for Nova Scotia, is well acquainted with installations in all coal mines in the Province. The knowledge of both has been very valuable in helping to draft this report.

Cerro Verde is one of several large porphyry-type copper deposits in Southern Peru. The copper occurs as primary sulphides, with a significant oxide capping. The exploitation of the deposit has been correspondingly divided into two stages, the first consisting of copper production from oxides, and the second from sulphides. Minero Peru successfully started the Stage I plant in June of 1977 with the first production of electrowon copper cathodes. This paper is essentially devoted to a description of the Stage I process, which can be summarized as follows: Ore is trucked to the primary crusher, where it is crushed to 225 mm and conveyed to a coarse ore stockpile. Ore withdrawn from the stockpile is secondary crushed to 65 mm, conveyed to a truck loadout bin, loaded into trucks and driven to the leaching pads. Ore is placed on the pads in lifts and sprayed with sulphuric acid solution to dissolve the copper. Copper-bearing solution forms a pond behind a dam at the lower end of each pad and is pumped from there to the solvent extraction plant. Copper is extracted from the leach solution into an organic phase and is then stripped from the organic phase to form a purified concentrated copper solution suitable for feed to electrowinning. In electrowinning, the copper is finally recovered as cathodes suitable for sale as refined copper.

"Grinding tests were conducted on an oxidized copper-cobalt ore using a pear-shaped ball mill. Twelve mono-sized ore fractions were prepared and wet ground batchwise. The mill was run for 0.5 to 30 min intervals. The shortest interval provided data more closely related to the breakage function (B) because less secondary breakage was hypothesized. Some selection function (S) and B parameters were determined. Remaining parameters were estimated using a population balance model simulator. To evaluate the kinetics model, an unsized ore sample was also milled. Predicted and measured particle size distributions (PSDs) agreed well, suggesting that S and B parameters can be used for continuous operation mass balances.RÉSUMÉ Des essais de broyage ont été menés sur un minerai oxydé de cuivre-cobalt à l’aide d’un broyeur à boulets piriforme. Douze fractions de minerai de dimension unique ont été préparés et broyés en voie humide en lots. Le broyeur était mis en route à des intervalles de 0,5 à 30 minutes. L’intervalle le plus court fournissait des données plus étroitement liées à la fonction d’abattage (B) car d’après l’hypothèse avancée, le besoin d’abattage secondaire était moindre. Certains paramètres de la fonction de sélection (S) et de B ont été déterminés ; les paramètres restants ont été estimés à l’aide d’un simulateur de modèle d’équilibre de population. INTRODUCTIONSize reduction of solids is a very energy intensive and highly inefficient process. It consumes approximately 5% of the electricity produced worldwide (Rhodes, 1998), and more than 50% of the total energy used in mineral processing plants (Walkiewicz, Lindroth, & Clark, 1996). An increase in grinding efficiency can therefore result in significant reductions in operating costs. This often amounts to determining the optimal design configurations for milling an ore sample in a laboratory mill under standard conditions. Prior to optimizing the milling stage, the requirements for downstream processing in terms of particle size distribution (PSD) need to be understood because low liberation and overgrinding will lead to future problems. Once this is done, it is also important to clearly understand the breakage properties of the ore. The kinetics of size reduction in tumbling mills are often determined using two probabilistic functions: selection and breakage (Austin & Luckie, 1972). Knowledge of the selection and breakage functions also enables the prediction of the PSD for a given ore sample."
