In this paper, an evaluation about the process mineralogy of the rich iron mine in Mongolia with comprehensive methods is given; this provides foundation of the comprehensive recovery of iron and cobalt in the ore. The research shows that the iron?s grade is 61.23%, Co?s grade is 0.02%, the ore is rich iron ore and its Co content also reaches border mining grade. For the ore, if want get high grade iron concentrate powder, must identify the mineral composition and the occurrence of iron and take into ac-count the recovery of Co content as associated resources. Chemical phase analysis results show that 86.35% of iron exists in magnetite, which means that the theoretical recovery ratio of iron is close to 86%. Minerals spectrum analysis confirmed that the magnetite containing a small amount of Mg, Al, and other impurities, the actual iron minerals to 70.28%, which means that theoretically iron grade iron concentrate only close to 70.28%. Based on the result of iron chemical phase analysis, by investigating the liberation of sulfide minerals and gangue, the recovery index of iron can be forecasted, when grinding fineness is 35%, 45%, 55% and 65% bellow 0.074mm,theoretical content of Fe in iron concentrate separately is 67.71%,67.88%,68.78%,and 69.43%,accordingly the theoretical recovery of Fe is 87.38%,87.05%,86.92% and 86.63%. From the perspective of process mineralogy, the forecast mineral beneficiation indicators show that the ore is easy sorting ore, iron processing operations have higher recovery rate, but wants sorting of high-grade iron ore concentrate still need appropriate grinding fineness. Furthermore, associated element Co, existing mostly in pyrite and pyrrhotite, is valuable in the ore. Pyrite and pyrrhotite have ideal liberation under grinding, so cobalt can be easily enriched in sulfide concentrate.

The molybdenum ores currently utilized in China are mostly molybdenum sulfide ores, whereas oxidized molybdenum ores have not been exploited and utilized efficiently. The aim of this article is to study the applied mineralogy of an intergrown iron-molybdenum oxidized ore in order to provide a mineralogical basis for the ore beneficiation research. The ore occurred in a surface oxidized zone seam and contained 23.65% Fe2O3 and 1.58% Mo. Various characterization techniques were employed to study the chemical composition and mineral composition of the ore, the particle size distribution of the minerals in the ore, and the tex-ture and structure of the ore. The results showed that the iron-molybdenum ore occurred in a wet, soft and earthy state. The ore was composed mainly of several oxidized minerals and colloidal min-erals, including wulfenite, barite, limonite and quartz. Wulfenite was one of the major and stable components in the ore and occurred as a separate mineral. Wulfenite, barite and quartz were granu-lar minerals with particle size ranging from fine to coarse but mainly in the fine particle range. Li-monite showed a crust and honeycomb-like colloidal state and composed the framework in the ore for the formation of the other minerals. They filled the pores in the framework and the size of the pores affected the size of the minerals formed in the pores and hence the recovery of wulfenite in ore beneficiation. According to the applied mineralogical properties of the oxidized molybdenum ore, a promising ore beneficiation process was proposed as follow Magnetic separation should be carried out first to separate the magnetic iron minerals and then the molybdenum mineral will be recovered by gravity concentration or a combination process of gravity concentration and flotation, depending on the distribution of the molybdenum mineral in the product of the magnetic separation.

As ore grades of existing and new ore deposits continue to decrease there is ever increasing pressure to decrease operating costs to maintain profitabitabitiy at existing mine sites and for new projects. The accepted solution to this dilemma in most cases is to increase treatment rate, leading to a coarser grind, at the expense of marginal decreases in recovery. The recovery loss is usually associated with losses of liberated and composite coarse material. This paper will review the practice of coarse particle flotation, including the reagent chemistry, cell hydrodynamics, froth stability, entrainment and flotation cell design, all parameters important to the recovery of coarse liberated and composite particles. This will provide a better understanding of opportunities to improve the recovery of coarse particles. Some examples will be provided.

The issues facing graduate training in the mineral processing industry are not too different today from those that prompted the initiation of the Anglo American Platinum Graduate Development Programme (AGDP) in 2002. Graduate metallurgists in South Africa enter the industry from different undergraduate programmes at various tertiary institutions, and so the knowledge and skills of the young graduates varies. Further, the geographical expansion of the industry combined with the downsizing of business units means that there are fewer opportunities for young graduates to be mentored through their first few years on site. Anglo American Platinum chose to address these issues by implementing an intensive, structured graduate training programme for all their new metallurgical graduates, known as the AGDP. The first two years of experience of the AGDP, from the viewpoints of both graduates and lecturers, were presented to the mineral processing community at the IMPC in Turkey in 2006 (Sweet et al, 2006). From the beginning, the programme was structured in a modular fashion to include a basic technical ?toolbox? including statistics, the scientific method and sampling protocols, while the mineral processing content comprised advanced learning in comminution, classification and flotation (later extended to include hydrometallurgy). Technical communication ? both written and verbal ? was included from the start. The programme was focussed very strongly on site work (?learning by doing?), with a major integrated site campaign conducted and analysed by each cohort. In 2012 the AGDP will accept its ninth cohort into the programme. This paper describes how Anglo American Platinum and the University of Cape Town have developed and adapted the programme over the last few years, in response to the challenges of the global recession, skills retention, and the changing operational needs of the company. The programme, which was drawn up to accommodate around 15 concentrator-only graduates, now accommodates 35-40 concentrator, smelter and refinery graduates annually. The programme has also been modified to facilitate new graduates spending most of their first year on the operations. The benefits of the programme for Anglo American Platinum have been tangible, and will be discussed in the paper. Keywords: graduate training, technology transfer

Surface chemical factors, including the balance of hydrophobic (e.g. collectors) and hydrophilic (e.g. oxidation products, precipitates) species, are major control determinants in flotation rates of specific minerals and therefore grade and recovery. There are a number of challenges involved with the surface analysis of different mineral phases from process streams in a flotation facility. The first is to collect samples that are representative of the process and retain their surface chemistry prior to introduction into the instrument. The second challenge in studying the surface chemistry of specific minerals is to find reliable methods of mineral phase recognition. In surface analysis of mineral particles, confident mineral selection can be difficult with many multi-metal minerals and with precipitated, adsorbed, reacted and contaminant species in the outermost molecular layers. The third challenge is to provide a statistical surface analysis of multiple grains of the same mineral. Methods to achieve these aims are described. Principal component analysis (PCA) of ToF-SIMS data provides improvement in phase recognition, particle selection and associated variations in surface species. Specific examples from both lab and plant operations, demonstrate that this technique can be utilized to differentiate surface chemical factors promoting (hydrophobic species) or inhibiting (hydrophilic species) flotation. A study of copper ion transfer (inadvertent activation) from chalcopyrite to pyrite and sphalerite clearly identified a statistical difference in copper intensities between the sphalerite and pyrite phases corresponding to their flotation response. The PCA analysis applied to concentrate and tails samples collected from the Inco Matte Concentrator demonstrated extensive CuOH and NiOH transfer between chalcocite and heazlewoodite minerals. The statistical analysis has been able to identify mechanisms controlling recovery and selectivity. High intensity conditioning (HIC) tests in which sphalerite was separated from a complex sulfide ore gave a 5% increase in the overall Zn recovery. The PCA/ToF-SIMS statistical analysis revealed the discriminating depressant action of adherent aluminosilicate (gangue) fine particles and adsorbed ions on the surface of sphalerite grains. HIC conditioning resulted in the removal of these gangue fines improving surface collector attachment efficiency.

Fengning ilmenite ore is a magnetic deposit in gabbro containing high phosphorus and low titanium, the main minerals in which are ilmenite, magnetite and apatite. The dissemination size of magnetite is so fine that even the percentage of -0.010mm level is up to 36.50%. The fine and vein magnetite are distributed in gangue and ilmenite, so the majority of the magnetite is difficult to be separated from the gangue. Ilmenite is difficult to be recovered by low-intensity magnetic separation even through fine grinding. In high-intensity magnetic separation of ilmenite, the gangue inter-growth with the magnetite and the Fe-containing silicates may be enriched in the concentrate, and the ilmenite of the concentrate will be reduced. Based on the processing mineralogy research, combined gravity-flotation process is suggested to recover the ilmenite. The method is also good to reduce phosphorus in the ilmenite concentrate.

The comminution in a high-pressure roller mill is modeled by an energy-based population balance approach considering three aspects of breakage taking place in the active zones of the mill: the interparticle breakage in the high-compression zone, the breakage at the edges of the rolls, and the pre-breakage in the acceleration zone. Together with an appropriate model of classification, this model can be used to simulate steady-state performance of closed-circuit grindings with high-pressure roller mill. After a brief description of the basic modeling approach, the algorithm of the steady-state calculation for a generalized grinding-classification circuit is presented, from which the circuit configurations commonly met in industrial practice can be derived. With an iron ore as feed material for example, simulation results are shown and discussed in respect of circulating load, specific energy consumption and product fineness for closed-circuit grindings under various operating conditions. The effects of stressing intensity, working gap, classifier parameters as well as circuit configuration on the overall circuit performance are investigated systematically by means of computer simulation.

In this paper two optional production processes are presented for reasonable utilization of primary sylvinite in Qinghai province, China. The two kinds of products as chlorine-free potash fertilizers; potassium sulphate or potassium magnesium sulphate can be obtained. In the course of potassium sulphate production, using primary sylvinite from Qinghai salt lake as raw material with impurities such as sodium chloride and insoluble in primary sylvinite, it must be prepared by flotation before being converted into potassium sulphate. This final product has found wide use in tobacco industry in China. However, in some cases Chinese farmers would rather buy the fertilizer of potassium magnesium sulphate than high quality of potassium sulphate. With flotation process which is a little different from above mentioned, the potassium magnesium sulphate fertilizer may be produced by washing one of the flotation concentrate presented as picromerite, while another concentrate containing potassium chloride is treated as by-product.

Most of the coal reserves in India are of drift origin and have very poor washability characteristics and a high level of near gravity materials. At least 30 new coal wash plants are expected to be set up in the next 5years.In such a scenario, adequate sampling followed by sink float test work for washability analysis becomes very critical for designing these new plants. For coal sampling purpose, stipulations of different standards are sometimes formidable and on the border of ?impracticality?; sometimes are self contradictory in terms of gross sample weight vis-a-vis minimum number of particles required in each size fraction and in each relative density fraction and also the minimum mass in the latter. Validation of the generated data is another important aspect of washability analysis. These issues can easily be addressed by using straight forward mathematical relationships, well known RR plots and by using simple MS Excel tool, etc.

Large quantities of electrical and electronic equipments are discarded at the end-of-life (EOL) in different industries and house hold applications. Their disposal is creating a challenging environmental problem due to the presence of hazardous metals and non-metallic materials such as epoxy resins and plastics including brominated flame retardants etc particularly in printed circuit boards (PCBs). The recovery valuable metals and separation of hazardous materials from discarded PCBs will not only conserve the resources but also mitigate the environmental pollution. From a recycling point of view for a sustainable society, the studies have been carried out for the recovery of metal values from EOL-PCBs of DVD video players (DVD-PCBs) and vacuum cleaners (VC-PCBs) using physical beneficiation techniques. The concentration of the metals was found to be 43 wt.% and 30 wt.% in DVD-PCBs and VC-PCBs, respectively. Both the PCBs samples were ground in a hammer mill after cutting and their size analysis was carried out. The liberation of the metallic and non-metallic fractions was investigated under the microscope for different size fractions. Subsequently, froth flotation and pneumatic air separation studied were carried out to enrich the metallic constituents. The studies showed the enrichment of metals in coarser particles (-1000 +150 µm) and non-metals in the finer particles -150 µm following mechanical recycling process. A grade of 90 % with 75% recovery was achieved by froth flotation, but lower grade and recovery of 75% and 65% respectively were obtained by pneumatic separation with -1500 µm powders for DVD-PCBs. A grade of 86% metal was obtained by froth flotation with 76% recovery in the case of VC-PCBs. The lower grade of 65% with almost same recovery was achieved during pneumatic separation studies due to lower concentration of metals in VC-PCBs. The studies also showed that the froth flotation is an efficient process for enrichment of metals from both the samples. The process is environmental friendly as no chemicals are employed during entire processing. The higher recovery and grade of metal is expected to be obtained on a large scale beneficiation process.

Hydrocyclones have been used extensively for more than 100 years to classify mineral slurries for recirculation in grinding circuits. Sometimes hydrocyclone classification is carried out in more than one stage to improve the efficiency of classification. Factors affecting separation efficiency include fluid velocity, density, and viscosity as well as the mass, size, and density of the particles. The geometric configuration also affects its efficiency; it includes parameters like cyclone diameter, underflow and overflow diameter, position of vortex finder, height of the cyclone, feed inlet geometry, and diameter etc. Besides changes in the basic parameters some modifications in cyclone has also been introduced from time to time which have affected its efficiency, some of these are :-(i).Introduction of magnetic force along with the centrifugal and drag force to control the flow of the magnetic particles inside the chamber.(ii). Introduction of sparger, air is introduced in the chamber in the form of bubbles, to control the flow of fine particles and hydrophobic particles. (iii). Introduction of dilution technologies for the dilution of thickened underflow. (iv).Introduction of new model. In spite of wide use and simple geometry, the real working principle of hydrocyclone chamber is extremely complex because of the swirling turbulent flow inside the device. In order to get more knowledge about hydrocyclones and to increase its efficiency, past 10-15 years simulation techniques are being developed. The simulation models also enabled a deeper insight into the static and dynamic behavior of hydrocyclones. Therefore, more emphasis on simulations by methods like Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Finite Element method (FEM) is given. Overall, a status review of the work carried out on the analysis of hydrocyclone performance, modeling approaches and its contribution in the efficiency of mineral processing operation is highlighted.

"The purpose of grinding circuits is to produce a particle size distribution that has as much as possible the wanted particle size class. In practise, however, the production of the wanted size class is not at all as simple as it sounds. In the case of industrial minerals for example the end user may give very tight specifications for the particle size distribution and for the chemical composition of the product. This leads in many cases to a very demanding grinding process, if we want to reach and maintain these specifications. In other words, the required size distribution is not necessary the best possible for the chemical composition.Screen models aim to predict the size distribution and flow of the products when a feed size distribution, feed tonnage, and grade efficiency curve are known. The approach used in this study was to select the most suitable empirical model for classification. Suitability of the existing models has been evaluated and accuracy compared. The tests showed that best grade efficiency model was the Rosin-Rammler model.The performance of a screen was evaluated in order to minimize the amount of fine material in the screen overflow. The experiments were carried out using Derrick single-deck screen, first alone with recycling and then in the closed circuit with a rod mill using two different scales. The separate screen tests showed the expected behaviour of the grade efficiency curves. In the pilot tests the Leonard screen efficiencies stayed almost constant. This suggests that the screen works better in a milling circuit. However the loading of the screen turned the product of the mill coarser that helped screening. The grade efficiencies obtained from the pilot tests had the same general shape. The regression analysis of the pilot test runs did not give an acceptable correlation for the parameters. This suggests that pilot tests cannot be directly used to scale or to optimise industrial milling circuits. However they can be used to predict the trends of behaviour of an industrial circuit."

Europe retains a modest position in world mining activity in terms of scale of production and mineral reserves but maintains a non-negligible role in the world mining industry. The concept of sustainable development resting on three pillars of economics, environment and social development has become an increasingly important factor in the European mining sector and a major influence on the related policies of the European Commission. Members of European mining industry shall conduct their activities according to the principles which promote sustainable development. A successful minerals planning policy should create the legal administrative environment that is necessary to ensure the sustainable supply of minerals to society within the framework of sustainable development. Members of the European mining industry shall conduct their activities according to principles which promote sustainable development. The challenge for sustainability is to find a balance between securing minerals supply, protecting the environment and achieving social progress. The point of balance depends on the range of policies adopted by governments. In this paper the development of the sustainability of the mining sector in EU and the social component of sustainability in the mineral industry is discussed.

In many base metal sulphide concentrators reagents such as collector and cyanide are often added to the grinding mill as well as to the flotation circuit. Whilst good reasons can be cited for splitting the reagent addition in this way, the benefits of such are rarely quantified and the complex reagent-mineral-media interactions occurring during milling are often poorly understood in terms of pulp chemistry. A new laboratory batch grinding mill designed by Magotteaux allows the user to measure, monitor, and control the pulp chemical conditions during grinding when testing different ores and media. Some of these parameters include pulp pH, pulp Eh, temperature, gaseous atmosphere, and dissolved oxygen concentration. In a recent development, the mill has been coupled with a simple on-line reagent monitoring system, designed by CSIRO, which allows the levels of species such as xanthate and cyanide in the grinding pulp to also be measured continuously during milling using a robust UV detection system. In this way the uptake of collector during grinding and the rate and ex-tent of cyanide interaction with the minerals and media can be determined as a function of grinding time. A series of grinding tests using an Australian nickel sulphide ore was conducted with the coupled system in which the cyanide dose, xanthate dose, and media type were systematically varied. The xanthate and cyanide levels were monitored as a function of grinding time and the data collected are discussed in terms of the pulp chemistry of the system and implications for plant reagent dosing strategies.

The importance of the grinding environment and its effect on sulphide minerals flotation behavior has been known for many years. The grinding environment may play a role in controlling fine and coarse particle flotation along with dissociation of different chemical species in grinding environment. Dissociation of different chemical species and ions within the process water may result from changing the grinding environment. The mining and mineral processing industry undertakes activities that may impact on water resources. These include use and storage of chemical storm-water management, process water management, mine dewatering and management of tailings. In mineral flotation understanding and controlling water quality is paramount important not only because of its effect on flotation but also with respect to control the quality of the water which is released to the environment. Releasing of different anionic and/or cationic chemical species in the process water results from the interactions among different mineral within the ore, process water, and the milling environment. In fact grinding mill acts as an electrochemical reactor which affects the flotation performances of different value minerals as well as the quality of the tailing products. An increasing in antimony content in process/discharge water at Boliden?s Tara processing plant in Ireland to above limitation level was reported in April 2010 which needed to be controlled. An increase up to 6 times of the permitted level was reported which needed an immediate action to control due to environmental considerations. Therefore attempts were made to detect why this higher amount of Sb is released and how to control and minimize its release to the process/reclaim water. This paper discusses how/why Sb content in process/reclaim water was increased by changing the mill electrochemistry and the strategies were taken into considerations to control it. Different strategies, including electrochemical controlling of the milling section, Fenton process, using Bauxsol in treating the process water, etc., have been considered and tested which are described herein. All strategies taken into consideration for solving the problem were successful which indicated good understanding of the issue and good decision making. Furthermore, for each solution the capital and operational costs were roughly estimated. Accordingly, the Sb content in process/discharge water was controlled to a value lower than allowed limitation, i.e., 1 ppm. "In all electrical beneficiation methods, the difference in electro-physical properties of the contributed mineral particles, essentially frictional charge, electrical conductivity and dielectric constant properties are exploited to achieve separation. The composition of the raw material determines what kind of either corona charging, conductive induction, or triboelectric separation method should be employed. The process is versatile and is influenced by different parameters related to mineral characteristics, surrounding ambient conditions and electrical and mechanical attributions of the separating device. Electrical separation is surface based beneficiation method which is mainly affected by the surface and surface changes of the minerals. Therefore, it is essential to understand how the electrophysical properties of the minerals can be changed/modified. During electrical/electrostatic separation process, both charge magnitude and its polarity that developed on the particles and therefore, their electrical beneficiation potential is essentially defined by surface phenomena. Therefore, it is essential to understand how the main electro-physical parameters can be changed/modified with applied surface treatment/pretreatment methods to promote separation. Surface treatment of minerals is carried out by different means, including chemical conditioning, irradiation, thermal treatment, etc. This paper discusses and analyze the electrical separation process, electrophysical properties of the minerals with special focus on the effect of surface pretreatment/treatment methods to affect electrical beneficiation potential of the minerals. The surface treatment methods vary in a wide range from simple surface cleaning to more complicated chemical conditioning and doping. The knowledge of the solid-state physics and chemistry leads to improve the beneficiation potential of different mineral systems by choosing suitable treatment method(s). Despite the complexity and multiplicity of the charging mechanisms, difficulties in separating fines it seems to be beneficial make our attempts to further investigate and develop the process as dry, low cost beneficiation process, especially nowadays when environmental concerns, as well as energy and water consumptions are main concerns for mining industry."

"Russia is among the nations holding the world's largest lithium ore reserves. Lithium is of key importance for the global economy. Therefore, it is important to review the current state of technology research aimed at finding the most effective solutions for the recovery of lithium from promising reserves in Russia. In Russia, a number of process solutions for the flotation of spodumene into salable concentrate (5% Li2O) have been implemented at the earlier existing complex low-grade ore concentration project. By applying these solutions, a sample of high-grade spodumene ore (4.7% Li2O) of the Greenbushes deposit was processed into a spodumene concentrate (7.5% Li2O) at a high recovery (~93%) of lithium. In Australia and Canada, new processes have been developed for the recovery of high-grade spodumene concentrates from high-grade ores using dense medium separation and flotation. For the recovery of mica lithium concentrates from low-grade ore, a flotation process was developed in Russia using the cationic collector ANP-2 and Oxifos-B as an additional collector. Low-grade ore containing 0.14% of lithium oxide was processed into a 2.7% Li2O concentrate. New hydrometallurgical lithium concentrate and ore processes are developed to avoid high-temperature (>1000 °C) roasting. The Sileach process (Australia) includes leaching of lithium ore with sulfuric acid in the presence of a halogen-containing component at a temperature of 95-115 °C. In the Russian process, lithium is recovered into an alkaline solution from low-grade spodumene ore in a pressure alkaline leaching environment (250 °C, NaOH concentration > 300 g/l). The developed concentration and hydrometallurgical methods will allow to design on their basis efficient processes for recovering salable products for hi-tech industries from lithium ores.INTRODUCTION Lithium has many unique and important properties. It is the least dense hard metal. Its alloys have some of the highest strength-to-weight ratios. Lithium has the lowest melting point of all known solid elements and is used as a highly-effective heat transfer medium. The high demand for lithium is due primarily to its unique electrochemical potential and low thermal expansion coefficient. It is used in the production of glass and ceramics, in petrochemicals, metals, medical and other industries. Since the late 20th century, the electronics industry has been the largest consumer of lithium. In recent years, lithium has attracted much attention also as an important component of ultra-lightweight electronic devices. It is also the preferred metal for electric batteries used in mobile electronic devices, vehicles, household power generators, making it an important resource for the development of environmentally friendly technology. Leading automotive brands have ambitious plans for the production of electric cars — Tesla Motors, VW, Toyota, GM, BYD Auto. It is expected that the production of electric vehicles alone will triple the demand for lithium by 2025. A sharp increase in the production of lithium is expected. Lithium has all the prerequisites to become a strategic resource of the 21st century. (Deutsche Bank, 2016; Bradley et al, 2017)"

The purity of rectorite is only about 70% after preliminary mineral processing, which has limited its application. In this research, different pulp densities, different dispersants, different dispersing methods and purification flow sheets were used to purify rectorite. The results show that it is possible to obtain high pure rectorite clay with the purity above 90% and concentrate yield between 24.9% and 29.4% by the purification process with composite dispersants, stirred mill grinding dispersion and so on. The obtained high pure rectorite can be further used in rectorite nanocomposites.

The high prices for PGM.s are driving major expansions and a focus on minerals processing recoveries and, to a lesser extent, reductions in the refining metal lockup.In nickel, HPAL operations on laterites have failed economically but Inco is still pursuing some alternatives. BHP-Billiton and others are developing bioleaching alternatives for nickel laterites and sulphides.Copper continues to be dominated by the hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical debate; new hydrometallurgical developments are being tested at several sites whilst the pyrometallurgists continue to make competitive cost and environmental improvements.Gold processing developments are dominated by the use of improved gravity recovery equipment and by the development of thiosulphate as a more environmentally acceptable lixiviant.PGM processing trends are the use of fine grinding technologies, higher power input flotation cells, and new pyrometallurgical technologies. Hydrometallurgical options for some applications are being sought.OVERVIEW The metals industry has remained under price pressure for some time; low and decreasing real prices for most metals have become an expected scenario. Occasional price spikes give some relief but invariably bring expansions and new entrants into an already oversupplied commodity market, thus leading to the continued price pressure. Technical innovation, economies of scale, and improved work systems are continually sought, so as to improve the competitive position of each individual company in such a climate; however, these developments add to the downward price pressure. In such a situation the application of scarce funds to research and development is a difficult task. Excess funding is not available in tight economic times and yet the main route to higher profits is clearly the application of technical developments to lower the cost of producing a metal commodity. Many technical centers have closed as a cost saving exercise and some have coalesced to obtain economies of scale. The Australian based AMIRA research organisation has grown to serve the R&D part of the market well in Australia and in South Africa by acting as the catalyst to form research partnerships between a number of industry players and as an administrator to direct the funding of research projects towards the various applicable research institutions. AMIRA has developed closer ties to Camiro (Canadian Mining Research Organisation) through the appointment of Camiro.s metallurgical processing research director as AMIRA.s North American based director. AMIRA is continuing discussions with MIRO (Minerals Industry Research Organisation) in regard to a merger, with a report outlining the merger proposal expected in March of 2003. Company focused research centers continue to be effective at Anglo American Research Labs, Teck-Cominco Research, Falconbridge Research center, Inco Research and some others."

SAGDesignTM Testing for grinding mill design was introduced commercially in 2004. Up to January 2008, 18 projects have been completed and 99 samples have been tested using this method. Two papers have been published describing the patented test procedure and one of these shows how the results compare with other grinding test methods. This paper will briefly discuss the theory on which this technology is based, and explain the procedures used to develop the calibration equation. Case studies are also included to demonstrate the effectiveness of the test work being done. These case studies show how the SAGDesign test is being used today: to design new grinding circuits for commercial full scale use; to calculate throughput in existing mills for production planning; and to accurately define grinding mill requirements at the scoping, pre-feasibility or feasibility study stage of project development, in order to economically identify the size and cost of the grinding mills that will be needed for the project. This is important because if the full rec-ommended SAGDesign testing program is done at an early stage in the project, the definitive cost for a guaranteed throughput, grinding mill design (by Outotec if their mills are purchased) is available. New grinding mill design for final engineering will be represented by the test work done on the Climax Molybdenum Project for Phelps Dodge (now FMI) in Colorado, USA. The SAG mill and ball mill for Climax are now in fabrication with project start up in late 2009. Next, the sizing of grinding mills at the scoping, pre-feasibility or feasibility study stage of mine development will be represented by a large metal mining property in Russia. Finally, calculation of the throughput for existing mills will be represented by work done at a base metal mine, in eastern Canada. Test work for designing SAG mills is now done in four laboratories at the time this paper was written. One in the USA at Dawson Metallurgical Laboratories, Inc. in Salt Lake City, two in Russia at the TOMS Research and Design Institute and at the Irgiredmet Research Institute, both in Irkutsk, and a fourth mill has been installed in Australia at AMMTEC Limited?s lab in Perth. A fifth SAGDesign test mill for radioactive ores has been built by Starkey & Associates, specifically for testing uranium ores and can be moved to any licensed lab in the world on a project basis.
