Arguably, some of the most restrictive statutory blast vibration requirements attached to mineral extraction operations can be found in the United Kingdom. Such limitations are, as a rule for the UK, stipulated together with a required statistical confidence that has to be observed in the blast design process in order to ensure total planning compliance. A key element in this procedure is the effect imparted by vibration data scatter from previous blasts as this becomes reflected in the site’s operational standard error statistic and in turn directly influences the maximum instantaneous charge weights that can be justifiably employed. The greater the scatter, the lower the compliant charge weights become.

Gold dredging has made such rapid strides of late and there is such a widespread interest in this branch of mining that I venture to contribute a detailed account of the way in which a Keystone driller was used by me in California to loosen, by blasting, a very tight gravel deposit, preparatory to dredging. Since 1988, there have been thirteen documented incidents in the United States and Canada in which carbon monoxide (CO) is suspected to have migrated through near surface strata into structures or other enclosed spaces as a result of nearby trench blasting or surface mine blasting. From these incidents, there are thirty suspected or medically verified CO poisonings and one fatality associated with these incidents. To better understand the variables contributing to this hazard, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) carried out a small- scale field study to identify key factors that may contribute to the migration of CO through the ground. NIOSH conducted single- hole heavily confined experimental test shots to measure the radial pressure pulse as it propagated through surrounding monitoring holes to determine if a relationship existed between the pressure pulse and resulting CO measurements afterwards. NIOSH also monitored blasts at an airport construction site. Following the detonations, the concentrations of CO, nitric oxide (NO), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were monitored for several days in the surrounding satellite holes. The peak CO measurements relative to distances from the shots were compared. Pressure histories and peak particle velocities (PPV) were measured at monitoring boreholes. It was found that the differential pressures recorded within the boreholes give some indication as to the likelihood of CO appearing, whereas the PPV measurements do not seem to be as good an indicator for potential CO migration. In this limited study, changes in barometric pressure had very little influence on removing the trapped detonation products, whereas applying a vacuum to the monitoring holes was effective in reducing the entrapped CO concentration.

The recent rise in deaths due to Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) has led to research that has speculated that the high acceleration experienced by soldiers on a blast loaded vehicle leads to Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) [2]. This research aims to investigate vehicle designs that can reducethe peak acceleration for passengers on board the vehicle, in the event that the vehicle is blast loaded by an IED."

The Material Service Thornton quarry is a multi-million annual production tons complex. Surrounded by busy surface highways, and divided by a railroad on the north/south axis and further divided by a major interstate highway on the east/west axis, blasting is a daily challenge. This paper deals with the problems of production blasting in an area adjacent to that interstate highway, and paralleling a busy four-lane highway. Discussion includes primary blasting issues such as borehole size, drill patterns and flyrock controls. Discussion also includes blast designs, timing schematics, smooth-wall blasting solutions, traffic and vibration concerns and many other factors influencing the success of this project.

Blocking. (5) The “blocking” of boulders is a much cheaper way of breaking them up than “mud capping.” It should always be used in preference to that method except when too much time will be consumed by a crew of men waiting for the drilling to be done, as shown in example of cost No. 1, as given under “mud capping.” Under such circumstances the time consumed would be a greater cost to the contractor than the extra amount of dynamite. Then, too, on large thin boulders to drill one hole would result only in breaking the stone into such pieces as would again have to be broken; and the many holes might equal the cost of extra dynamite. Under such circumstances if method (6) cannot be used, “mud capping” will have to be resorted to, to do the work economically.

Blasters face a long list of tasks to execute daily—from vehicle inspections to blast design and layout, hole loading and tie-in, securing the site, and finally, safely executing the blast. Good practices and, in most cases, regulations and requirements necessitate documenting their work, specifically their blast report. While some blasters use paper forms, others use electronic means to streamline the process. The authors have served as attorneys and expert witnesses in representing companies and individual blasters in numerous administrative and legal matters in which documentation of the blaster’s work was both critical and detrimental to the effectiveness of defending their work. This paper discusses in a case-study manner the authors' observations concerning good blast report format, specific observations around electronic and paper report completion, record-keeping, seismograph setup and recordkeeping, video and photo documentation, internal auditing, and other topics related to documenting the blast. The paper aims to serve as a discussion guide for blasters to improve their blast record-keeping process, develop better practices that effectively document their work, and allow them to defend their work should a claim arise concerning their operations.

Near-field blast vibration response of restrained pipelines either buried or exposed was studied during rock excavations at sensitive locations for Stage-II (4x500 MW) commissioning work in a super thermal powerplant of the National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd. (NTPC) of India. The existing running plant of capacity 1000 MW has many important installations including pipelines of varying diameters. These pipelines were very close to the blasting locations (mostly within 12m). Blast optimization and consequent monitoring of vibrations were carried out simultaneously for more than 250 experimental blasts conducted by the authors. This paper emphasized, particularly, on the safety of pipelines and their responses due to repeated blasting impacts. A few guidelines supported by theoretical derivations are provided for futuristic research.

The advances in electronics and the development of more efficient algorithms, allow for the designing of more complex and sophisticated automated systems. The new devices include lighter, faster, reliable, and stronger robot manipulators. One available technology, with relatively low cost, is a simple robot manipulator controlled by remote control. The device has been designed to be used in both mining and law enforcement, where it can be useful for inspection, rescue, gas analysis, and even to manipulate dangerous objects, such as explosives. The applications may even include the rescue of trapped miners in risky environments. The major advantage is the fact that the robot can be controlled with a remote and monitored through a video camera, minimizing human exposure to hazardous areas, where robots can perform tasks in an aggressive atmosphere and confined spaces. This article presents a mining robot manipulator controlled by remote control, using video cameras for positioning and sensors for movements, which are located on the operator's arm. With this system, it is possible to create a sensation of virtual reality, allowing easy operation for anyone trained in dealing with explosives, rescues, or other dangerous tasks. Blasting and mining are becoming perfect applications for robots, and its use should increase very soon. The results are discussed and presented for the brand new Xiru 01 robot manipulator.

If so, you may have found that the accuracy of the handheld GPS systems left much to be desired. It may be time to get the units back out of storage and give them another try.
