Shear tests were performed on several prepared samples of granular and powdery bulk materials to investigate the following parameters: Particle size and distribution, particle movement, moisture content, consolidation of material, bulk density, void ratio, porosity, volume change, and strain rate. A series of shear tests was performed with weight-percent-ratios of minus 0.185-inch tertiary sand and 1-1/2-by l/2-inch tertiary gravel mixtures, and weight-percent-ratios of minus 200-mesh limestone (rock dust) and minus 200-mesh bituminous float coal dust. A comparison was made for shear test results obtained with rectangular and circular shear cells utilizing the large and small direct shear testers. Specifically, the shear results obtained include the angle of internal friction or shear strength of the tested material under known consolidating pressures, and the kinematic angle of friction or coefficient of friction between the interface of a bulk material and a sample wall material. The experimental procedure, tests, and results are given for each parameter investigated.

The Federal Bureau of Mines has investigated methods of sodium reduction of titanium chlorides to produce high purity titanium metal (14).4/ This investigation was made to obtain a better understanding of the reactions involved in sodium reduction of titanium chlorides and was part of the Bureau's activities toward improving the technology of titanium. Theoretical and experimental evidence show that sodium reduction of titanium tetrachloride occurs by stepwise reactions. The first stage reduction between sodium vapor and vapors of titanium chlorides produces titanium di-and trichlorides which subsequently condense with sodium chloride to form a salt mixture. The second stage reduction takes place in the condensed salt mixture between sodium and titanium subchlorides. Final reduction is a heterogeneous reaction between two separate phases, the a phase which consisted of sodium dissolved in sodium chloride and the ß phase titanium subchlorides dissolved in sodium chloride. The mechanism of the heterogeneous reaction between these phases is electrochemical in nature. The model proposed is a galvanic reaction at the interfacial region.

The problems presented by old mine workings affect both present day mining and land development. An automated method of locating these old mines from the surface using electrical resistivity techniques was de-veloped earlier under a Bureau of Mines contract. Subsequent Bureau research has refined the techniques and expanded the area of study to a variety of geologic provinces. During this research, six mining areas in the United States were in-vestigated with the Bureau's automated resistivity method. This report describes the mining areas involved and the results of the resistivity investigations, which showed a high rate of success in detecting old mines. It also describes the field measurement techniques and data analysis procedures.

Two general schemes have been used for the determination of gold and silver in material containing considerable quantities of copper ; one is known as the " all fire " method , and the other as the , " combination " , or " wet and dry" method . The all fire crucible method , using an excess charge of litharge , has been found satisfactory when the copper content of an ore is under 6 per cent , ( Loevy , J. , Zur Edelmetallbestimmung in hochprozentigen Kupfererzen : Chem. Ztg . Jarhrg . 35 , 1911 , p . 278 ) , or where the precious metal value is so great that a small sample can be used . In the latter case , silica is added until the copper ratio is sufficiently low . If there is more than 6 per cent of copper in an ore , the lead button obtained from a crucible fusion will require repeated scorification before . it can be cupelled successfully . Rescorification is not only tedious , but also causes a slag loss of precious metals . In combination methods , the copper is dissolved , and the gold and silver in the residue . is determined by fire assay Although some combination methods have given satisfactory results for gold and silver , they are not applicable when an estimation of the platinum metals is required . Since substances containing platinum are frequently high in copper , a study of methods which might be used for the estimation of small quantities of gold , silver , and the platinum metals in such material was considered worth while . The estimation of platinum in ores by fire assay methods has been described in Technical Paper 270 of the bureau; ( Davis , C.W. , The detection and estimation of platinum in ores : U. S. Bureau of Mines Tech . Paper 270 , 1921. ) the present paper , which is supplementary to that report , deals chiefly with the application of combination methods , taking them up to the point where the fire assay is to be applied .

Provide improved permanent stoppings designed specifically for use in mines with large cross-sectional entries. Approach The large entry sizes in many mines, such as oil shale, salt, and limestone, make the conventional stopping construction techniques used in smaller opening mines unacceptable. The Bureau of Mines and Colorado Mining Association jointly sponsored a contract to design and test new or modified stopping concepts for these mines. The most promising concepts were then tested in an oil-shale mine having 30-foot-high by 55-foot-wide mine entry openings. All stopping designs tested were evaluated in terms of cost, air tightness, and resistance to blast damage.

The contract for the Water Jet Chock Mounted Miner Feasibility Study was awarded to FMC Corporation's Advanced Products Division on 18 November, 1974. The program was divided into four phases as follows: ? Phase I - Planning ? Phase II - Conceptual Design ? Phase III - Budgetary Cost Estimate and Economic Feasibility Study ? Phase IV - Final Report During Phase I, which lasted 1 month, most of the necessary information and data for the conduct of Phase II was obtained. To accomplish this, arrangements were made for personal visits to the University of Missouri at Rolla, Illinois Institute of Technology Research Institute, USBM TCMRC, Alpine Equipment Co., Mining Progress, Inc. and Eastern Associated Coal Corporation's Harris No. 1 Mine. Also, a list of manufacturers of high pressure equipment was compiled to be contacted during Phase II. Finally, the objectives to be accomplished during Phase II were outlined. The Phase I Report was submitted on 23 December, 1974. At the beginning of Phase II, personal visits were made to the research centers and firms mentioned above. Later an additional visit was made to the Harris Mine, and to the Pittsburgh Mining Research Center at Brucetun to observe a test of a water jet mounted on an Alpine Mining Machine. Equipment manufacturers of high pressure components such as hoses, tubing, valves, pumps, and intensifiers were contacted to obtain item performance data, availability, and cost.

A systematic study of the mechanism of interaction of 218Po(RaA) armed by the decay of 222Rn with airborne particulate matter has been made. The rate of attachment of RaA to particles in the diameter range of 0.1 µm to 10.0 µm has been measured as a function of particle size, concentration, and composition, radon concentration, time of interaction, relative humidity and temperature. It was found that under the conditions in these experiments the attachment rate was proportional to the square of the particle diameter and varied with temperature and relative humidity. The composition of the particles apparently has no effect on the attachment. The variation in attachment rate was related to a sticking probability coefficient of approximately 0.02 that varies systematically with temperature and humidity. In addition, the rate of deposition of RaA on the wall of the attachment kinetics system was measured and also found to change with temperature and relative humidity.

This report summarizes the work performed under USBM Contract No. H0155155. The purpose of this work was to obtain operational data on retrofit noise control treatments suitable for use in coal preparation plants. This data was obtained by evaluating the performance of four categories of noise control treatments which were installed in a commercial coal preparation plant. The four categories of treatments were resilient screen decks, resilient impact pads, chute liners, and curtains. The selection, installation and initial evaluation of the treatments was documented in the Volume I report issued in 1977. This Volume II report summarizes the results of the long-term evaluation of the original treatments, as well as some additional tests which were conducted on elastomer-clad (resilient) screen decks. This project demonstrated the feasibility of a number of retrofit noise control treatments, some of which also proved to be quite durable over the long term.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 374 natural gas samples from 24 States and 5 foreign countries. These samples were collected during calendar year 1966 as a part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses of foreign samples contained in this publication represent the first samples received as a result of this expanded program. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Eight previous publications have been made to present the results of 7,244 gas analyses made? by the Bureau of Mines Helium Activity prior to 1966. The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of lead and zinc from 104 domestic mines and deposits. Fourteen primary lead and fifty-three primary zinc operations with in situ demonstrated resources containing 27.3 million metric tons (t) of lead and 53 million t of zinc were subsequently evaluated. Potentially 17.5 million t of lead and 2.4 million t of byproduct zinc could be recovered from 14 primary lead operations. Economic evaluations performed in constant January 1982 dollars determined a long-run total cost per pound of recoverable commodity. Including a 15-pct discounted-cash-flow rate of return (DCFROR), 59 pct of primary lead was potentially available at or below $0.32 per pound of lead. Potentially 40 million t of zinc and 5.6 million t of byproduct lead could be recovered from 53 primary zinc operations. Ninety percent of the recoverable zinc is potentially available from currently nonproducing mines and deposits, and a weighted average of their long-run total costs was determined at $0.98 per pound of zinc. At a breakeven (0-pct) DCFROR, these non producing operations had a weighted average long-run total cost of $0.58 per pound of zinc. Sensitivity analyses illustrated that operations that recover byproducts were most sensitive to fluctuating metal prices, producing operations were more sensitive to increased smelter treatment charges, and nonproducing operations were impacted most by the DCFROR.

Mining-induced microseismicity data collected by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in a hard-rock mine were analyzed for spatial and temporal patterns that might prove useful for prediction of rock bursts or assessment of rock mass damage changes. Pattern attributes described and illustrated in the previous report (part 1) were applied to the study of aftershock sequences associated with two different stopes. The aftershock sequences were spatially and temporally fractal, and the fractality was maintained for up to 16 h following a sequence progenitor. This suggests mechanical interdependency among the after-shocks. No statistical difference was found in the distributions of fractal dimensions when comparing two different stopes or when comparing aftershock sequences initiated by blasts or bumps. This suggests a lack of sensitivity to both stress perturbation mechanism and local damage states. However, differences between the two stopes were found in other sequence attributes that support inferred differences in the magnitude of stress concentrations and damage near each stope, and over time as a stope is developed.

Toxic gases produced by the detonation of six explosives were measured in an underground hardrock metal mine during actual mining operations. The six explosives included two semi-gelatin dynamites, three slurry explosives and an ammonium-nitrate, fuel-oil/ammonia dynamite combination. Explosives were detonated at the face of a drift and the toxic gases produced by the detonation were trapped to the end of the drift by a bulkhead located a short distance away from the face. Toxic gas concentrations were then measured with direct readout instruments and together with the containment volume, the toxic gas volumes per mass of explosive were calculated. Toxic gas measurements were found in the following ranges (ft3/lbm): N02 0.010-0.035; N02, 0.003-0.019; CO, 0.08-0.30; S02, 0.00-0.05; and C02, 0.7-1.8. Results showed that toxic gas production (ft3/lbm) correlated with the densities (kg/m3) and energy densities (kJ/kg) of the explosives tested.

"INTRODUCTION In the ammonium sulfate process for the production of alumina from clay,,3/ the clay is baked with amonium sulfate at about 400ºC. to form anhydrous ammonium alum and free ammonia or ammonium carbonate. The alum is leached from the baked product with water and circulating liquors and is purified by recrystallization. Aluminum hydroxide is precipitated by treating thus alum the alum the ammonia or ammonium carbonate from the baking step. Ammonium sulfate is recovered from the filtrate for reuse, and the aluminum hydroxide precipitate is calcined to produce high-purity alumina. In this process, as in other acid processes for the production of alumina, 4/ a large part of the iron in the clay is extracted. The iron tends to build up in the leach liquors and contaminate the crystals, so that its elimination is one of the most important problems in the process. A number of large clay deposits occur in the Western States. Those that have boon explored most extensively 5/contain an average of 24 to 30 percent available A12O3 and 2 to 8 percent available Fe2O3. 6/ The available Fe2O3 content of various other clays ranges from less than I percent to more than 20 percent. The available Al2O3 or Fe2O3 is usually 90 to 98 percent of the total but may be much less. In generals the iron content bears no fixed relation to the alumina content and may vary widely within a given deposit."

The Bureau of Mines and the Alabama. Power Co. jointly conducted a first experiment in underground gasification of coal at Gorgas, Ala., during the fall and winter of 1946-47. This preliminary experiment showed that it was not difficult to maintain combustion of coal underground, and that coal in place could be completely gasified. It was noted that the high temperature developed by the gasification of coal in place brought about changes in overlying strata that appeared to be favorable to the process. The high temperatures caused the roof rock to become plastic, to expand, and to settle down on the mine floor directly behind the reacting coke face. These results were promising enough to warrant further investigation of the process. It was believed that if this action could be controlled properly with roofs of similar composition, it would tend to force the gas-making fluids underground against the coal faces. Plans for the second experiment were based in part on this favor-able roof action, and the successful operation of the planned initial straightline passages depended on this fact. Gorgas was chosen as the site for the second experiment for the following reasons: A tract of coal land of sufficient size was available and isolated from the main body of coal; the roof rock was similar in composition to that encountered in the first experiment; and the overlying strata were thick enough to eliminate some of the operating difficulties that had been encountered, In addition, power, water, and machine-shop facilities as well as an adequate supply of labor were available in this area, and the friendly cooperation of the Alabama Power Co. further recommended this site for the planned experiment.

Coal carbonization, the basis of a major industry, consists in heating coal in the absence of air at various temperatures (ranging from 500° to 1,000° C.) that are selected according to the kind of products desired. During this treatment, the complex organic substances that comprise the major part of the coal are converted into several useful products that are quite different from the original material. The principal products of coal carbonization or distillation are coke and gas. These products, as well as others of which lower yields are obtained (light oil, tar, and ammonia), occupy an important place in present-day commerce and civilization. This paper is concerned with the composition of the tar and light oil, which, as complex mixtures of organic compounds, are the source of many important dyes, inter-mediates, medicinals, resins, etc. The volatile products obtained when bituminous coals are destructively distilled or carbonized are tar, aqueous liquor, and gas. These products vary in composition and properties, depending on the nature of the coal and the temperature and conditions of carbonization. The tar is a dark, rather thick and viscous liquid at ordinary temperatures, becoming semisolid when cooled to the freezing point of water. The aqueous liquor (chiefly water) contains several inorganic substances and certain organic compounds, which, because of their solubility characteristics, have been extracted from the tar. The carbonization gases consist chiefly of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, hydrogen sulphide, ammonia, methane, ethane, ethylene, and several hydrocarbons of higher molecular weight. The hydrocarbons of higher molecular weight (benzene, toluene, xylene, etc.) may be re-moved as liquids from the gas by suitable means. This liquid and the first fractions obtained on distilling the tar are known as light oil.

This report outlines the modifications that have been carried out to the original prototype rectangular shaft sinking equipment for its use in a circular shaft. The surface testing of the machine is described where seven, 24 ft. diameter shafts were excavated to an average depth of 21 ft. at rates ranging between 1 ft/hr and 1.9 ft/hr depending upon the prevailing conditions. The durability and productivity standards for the equipment were established indicating that the objectives of the project had been realized. That is, when using the machine the sinking rates could be increased by 25% and costs reduced by a corresponding amount compared with conventional drill and blast methods. In addition it was shown that the machine had been developed to a state of fitness for sustained underground use.

The NIOSH suite of coal mine ground control software addresses nearly every aspect of coal mine ground control planning, including geologic characterization, mine layout, pillar design, and support selection. Mine planners who use the soft-ware have access to the knowledge gained during years of NIOSH research—packaged in a simple, easy-to-use format. Several of these software packages have recently been updated and improved. Analysis of Roof Bolt Systems (ARBS) (Figure 1) helps select the proper roof bolt system design from the immense variety of available bolt types and patterns. It was developed from statistical analysis of extensive bolt performance and roof fall data. New features in Version 2 include— • The capability to analyze roof bolt systems that use two types of bolts; and • A roof support cost module that estimates the total in-stalled cost of different patterns, considering the costs of consumables, labor, maintenance, and other factors. The Support Technology Optimization Program (STOP) (Figure 2) can be used to make judgments regarding which secondary support system will be the most effective in a particular mine condition and to evaluate the advantages or dis-advantages of alternative support systems. Version 3.0 includes additional improvements: • Supports with large load-shedding following yielding can be designed based on the peak loading capability as well as the residual loading capability; • Seven new support systems have been added to the program; and • Easier access to photo gallery has been provided. The Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) replaces com-plicated geologic information with a simple numerical rating that mine planners can use in many ground control applications. The CMRR can be readily integrated into a geologic exploration program, and the software package is capable of generating an AutoCAD CMRR "layer." Version 1.2 contains— • The complete CMRR database with more than 250 ratings obtained from 70 different U.S. coal seams; and • An all-new "Help" file that clearly explains all aspects of the program. Analysis of Horizontal Stress in Mining (AHSM) can help find the optimum mine layouts for control of horizontal stress. It can be used to analyze both development and longwall retreat designs, and it shows how the stress condition varies as the entry, crosscut, and panel orientations are changed. Version 2 features— • Improved graphics that enable the user to observe the effect of design changes without adjusting the display on the computer screen; and • Resource files containing information on stress map-ping, advance-and-relieve mining, stress measurements in U.S. coal mines, and other topics. 1. This, the final report to the U. S. Bureau of Mines on the program with the subject title, presents the data obtained from June 29, 1973, to April 20, 1974. 2. Operating in the Illinois #6 coal seam, the effectiveness of foam opposed to water was compared in reducing respirable coal dust. A combination of 39 foam generators and 14 water sprays were used during the foam tests. Sixty one water sprays were operated during the water tests. Data from 24 shifts using foam and 21 shifts using water are presented. 3. Additional work on foam generator design should be undertaken to provide coverage to a wider area with foam. 4. The general attitude of those working on the foam program and with the miner at the face was positive. It is urged that the work be continued. 5. The minor respiratory irritations evidently caused by an aerosol effect of the surfactant should be investigated. 6. The statistical analysis of the tests will be made and reported by the U. S. Bureau of Mines.
