The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted an inventory of the prospects and mineral resources in the Scodies RARE II area (No. 5212) in 1982. No mineral production is recorded from the area, and no mines are being developed. The Scodies RARE II area is comprised primarily of light colored granodiorite with minor inclusions of mafic granitic rocks. Late stage differentiates of magmas resulted in quartz veins and pods. Metasedimentary rocks which have been mineralized in some parts of the Sierra Nevada were not observed within the study area during this investigation but small inclusions have been reported.

Quadratic functions, Q(hkl), are given to six places in increments of 0.01° for 2? from 00 to 90° for FeKa and from 25° to 180° for FeKa1. The wavelengths used for Fe in the computation are those agreed upon by the Editorial Commission of the International Tables for X-ray Crystallography (1950): FeKa1 1.93597 A.; Feka2 1.93991 A. A survey was conducted relating to the current practices for the classification of hazardous locations in coal preparation plants. Several plants processing bituminous, anthracite and lignite coal in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, North Dakota, Colorado, Montana and Wyoming were visited. Coal preparation plant operations and designers as well as MESA inspectors were interviewed. The National Electrical Code was discussed with selected members of the NFPA committee and electrical equipment manufacturers. Data provided by MESA on fire and explosion accidents in coal preparation plants were examined. The requirements of the pertinent Federal Regulations, National Electrical Code, National Electrical Manufacturers Association and Underwriters' Laboratories were compared and evaluated. This report consists of two parts. Part I: "Analysis and Review" provides a summary of the findings. Part II: "Recommended Guidelines" consists of recommended uniform guidelines that may be used for interpreting the National Electrical Code as it applies to the classification of hazardous areas in coal preparation plants.

During the period 1979 thru 1982, Multi Mineral Corporation conducted a mining I research program at the United States Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines Oil Shale Mining Environmental Research Facility in the Central Piceance Creek Basin, Rio Blanco County, Colorado. The program consisted of mining, environmental and geotechnical research data and, the results are described in this report.

This manual has been prepared fur the help and guidance of underground coal mine operators. It details both common and unique engineering methods by which the respirable dust, which is generated in coal mines, can be controlled. This document was compiled by Apt, Bramer, Conrad and Associates, Inc. under contract number H0111464, issued by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and forms Volume II of the final report. This contract was authorized by and executed pursuant to the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety. Act of 1969 (P. I. 91-173; 83 Stat. 742).

Injury experience at coal mines and mechanical-cleaning plants (excluding officeworkers ) in 1967 was 222 fatal and 10,115 nonfatal disabling work injuries during an exposure time of 241.8 million man-hours. These injuries occurred at a frequency rate of 42-75 per million man-hours worked; the severity rate was 7,699 days lost or charged per million man-hours. Each of these general measures of injury experience was lower than similar data recorded for 1966. Employment at 6,885 coal mines and 569 mechanical-cleaning plants, excluding officeworkers, averaged 139,312 men in 1967. The average number of days worked was 220. Coal production totaled 560.8 million short tons, at rates of 2.32 tons per man-hour and 18.32 tons per man-day. A total of 2,779 onsite officeworkers at coal mines and mechanical- cleaning plants worked 5.2 million man-hours in 1967 without a disabling work injury.

This report describes investigations of the economic merits of multiple zone mining and beneficiation versus selective mining of altered Western phosphate rock. The same deposit was considered in both instances and it was assumed that the grade of selectively mined ore was comparable to the grade of the concentrate from beneficiation. The beneficiating scheme used for the investigation was one proved by small continuous circuit operation. All economic factors were found to favor multiple zone mining plus beneficiation. Capital requirements and production costs were lower, and production life of the deposit was extended 4.5 times. The concentrate from beneficiation would be a uniform high-quality feed for acidulation and would be low in stable metallic oxide (R203) content. Such a feed would permit improved plant operating control, and the low R203 would promote more rapid filtration and minimize sludge formation in the phosphoric acid. With the proposed treatment, the concentrate produced by flotation from this deposit would cost about 1.5 times as much per ton as the concentrate produced by classification sizing. Therefore, inclusion of a flotation step in treatment schemes requires an economic analysis for each ore deposit.

Contract J0275007 was to consist of a thorough two-phase statistical analysis of respirable coal mine dust data from USBM Contracts H0232061, H0232060, H0230029, H0230031, H0210050, and H0242013. Consequently, BCR cataloged and assembled relevant data items from these contracts and formulated procedures suitable for the evaluation. The selected procedure was a Multilinear Regression Analysis which related dust concentrations measured in the mine to other mine parameters. Under the first phase, a thorough analysis of the date from USBM Contract No. H0230029 was completed. Primary results from this analysis are as follows: (1) The five variables that significantly affect dust concentrations in the return behind the brattice are the spray system utilized; the distance from the face to the return brattice; the return airflow; the production rate; and the water consumption rate, in that order. These five variables describe about 85 percent of the total variation in the return dust concentration. (2) Results at the miner and jack-setter locations were somewhat less conclusive due to the fact that only 17 percent of the variation in dust at the miner could be resolved and only 48 percent of the variation at the jack-setter location could be explained. The decision of the sponsor was that these initial results revealed as much information as could be expected; thus, per instructions from the USBM, the second phase (analysis of the other five contracts) was abandoned.

This is the seventh in a series of reports on properties of commercial motor fuels, made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first report gave data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.3/ The present report covering 1,875 samples represents the products of 83 companies plus those from the Pacific coast, which were averaged by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before being submitted and are published exactly as they were submitted. For the regular grade 985 samples consisting of 73 different brands are averaged. The premium grade consists of 489 samples of 40 different brands. The third grade has 401 samples averaged from 51 different brands. In this report the districts have been reduced to 21 by combining North and South Texas into one district. Fl Paso samples are reported with the South Rocky Mountain district, and Amarillo, Tex., has been included with the Middle Rocker Mountain district. In the present survey samples from Fort Smith, Ark., have been included in the Tulsa area, Indianapolis has been included in the St. Louis district. Cleveland represents the State of Ohio. Samples from Little Rock, Ark., and North Carolina have been included in the Memphis district. The Pittsburgh district includes samples only from this State and Wheeling, W. Va. The actual sampling points in each area are indicated an table 1.

The objective was to evaluate central lubrication systems for potential use on underground mining equipment. Previous use on continuous mining equipment resulted in poor system performance because of improper selection of lubricants, component failures, and an inconsistent delivery of lubricant to the bearings. The principles and operational characteristics of systems are reviewed and evaluated, and it was concluded that systems are available which can provide reliable central lubrication if properly applied, installed, and maintained. The procedures for applying a system to a continuous miner are discussed. Investigation revealed the lack of significant information on lubrication-related equipment failures and injuries related to maintenance and repair operations, the lack of significant failure rate data for central lubrication system components, and the lack of performance standards for central lubrication systems and components. To continue the development of systems for underground mining equipment it is recommended that a data bank on failures and reliability for equipment with and without central lubrication systems be created, and standardized specifications and performance criteria be developed for central lubrication systems and components which will be used on underground mining equipment.

Blasting operations are an essential element in the recovery of our Nation?s mineral resources. The mining industry uses billions of pounds of explosives annually. The majority of blasting occurs in surface mining operations. Blasting results in the fragmentation and often the projection of rocks. Frequently, the rocks are thrown beyond the expected limits. Flyrock and failure to secure the blasting area dominate blasting-related accidents in mining, especially in surface mining. Blasting accidents in the mining industry tend to result in critical injuries or fatalities. Accident reports and information collected from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and other government agencies provide supporting evidence. According to the data collected, blasting-related accidents (in mining) were 11 times more severe than all other types of mining accidents. Blasting accidents are not unique to mining operations - the same situation exists in the construction field. In this paper the authors have compiled a list of the primary causes of flyrock and the failure to secure the blast area. In the next phase of this project, typical blasting scenarios will be reviewed which will highlight the main reasons flyrock and/or lack of blast area security occur. This will alert miners and construction workers to the current problems/hazards associated with blasting and to identify other safety measures to protect personnel.

The effectiveness of an industry's safety activities can be gaged best by the accident records of that industry. In an effort to gage conditions in the petroleum industry, and with the objective of helping to reduce the number of accidents in it, the Bureau of Mines from time to time has tabulated, analyzed, and published pertinent statistical information.3/. These reports have dealt with distribution, causes, and costs and related phases of accidents for various and collective divisions of the petroleum industry in several sections of the country. This type of study aids the personnel of the Bureau in planning the course of its activities in accident-prevention work and gives useful data to persons engaged or interested in the promotion of safety in the petroleum industry, which will aid them in their efforts to reduce the number and severity of accidents. A majority of petroleum operators and "service? contractors have acknowledged their responsibility to provide their employees with safe working conditions and to their stockholders for greater economic value of invested capital by establishing safety divisions within their respective organizations. Such divisions have a primary duty, namely, to see that properly designed and guarded machinery and working equipment are furnished the employees and that they are trained in the safest practical methods of performing their work. The applicability of a rotating drum with an attached trommel as a flocculation dewatering device of Florida phosphatic claywastes was studied. Several experiments were conducted in order to determine the important fabrication and operating parameters. Results from the experiments indicated flint the dosage of polyethylene oxide required to form a satisfactory product cake could be reduced by using the rotary drum, which introduces less shear stress into the fluid than a constant stirred tank mixer. It was found that the length of the mixer was the most important parameter. Increased length increased the retention time the flocs stayed in the mixer without dewatering. Such increased time decreased the stability of the flocs. Through analysis of residence time distribution data it was found that the longer mixers approached plug flow characteristics. Other important parameters were trommel length and rotational speed. Mixers from 10 cm diameter to 35.6 cm diameter were tested with good results.

The National Granite Commission at its annual meeting in Norfolk, Va., in January, 1930, passed a resolution requesting the Bureau of Mines to conduct an economic study of the granite industry. In with this request a preliminary review has been made of trends in the production and uses of block granite.. Some unfavorable conditions were thus brought to light, and certain suggestions regarding a more orderly and consistent growth in the industry are herein discussed. The results of the study are, presented in this report for the earnest consideration of. the industry, and comments are invited, not only on this report but as to future work that might be accomplished by the Bureau of Mines. The authors desire to acknowledge many helpful suggestions and comments from Paul M. Tyler of the Bureau of Mines and from Harris F. Sherman, secretary of the National Building Granite Quarries Association. Miss A. T. Coons of the Bureau of Mines rendered valuable assistance through her wide knowledge of granite statistics. The block granite industry has shown little expansion during recent years. While the value of the annual production has grown from about $14,000,000 in 1904 to nearly $25,000,000 in 1928, the increment in value is caused mainly by mounting prices rather than by increased production. Even granite for memorials shows a very small advance in production volume, although the value has increased from about $3,500,060 in 1904 to more than $11,000,000 in 1928, which is the most consistent growth of any branch of the industry. The value of building granite has fallen for a number of years much below the figure for 1904, and in 1928 was very little in advance of the value attained 24 years previously. The use of granite paving blocks and rubble has shown a gradual decline.

A newly developed chemical conditioning technique, which greatly simplifies the preparation of plating baths for the electrodeposition of titanium diboride (TiB2) coatings, is described in this report. The new plating technique was used to prepare samples of titanium diboride (TiB2) coatings on three types of substrate materials. These samples were then evaluated in both low- and high-speed wear-test programs to determine the wear resistance, microhardness, and adhesion of the coatings. In general, it was found that the wear resistance of the coatings is independent of substrate. Scanning electron micrographs have shown that the coating wear surfaces are very smooth, suggesting slow and continuous removal of the coating during the wear test (that is, adhesive wear). Adhesion between the coating and all substrates was excellent. Microhardness results show that the TiB2 coating is harder than alumina, with a hardness value exceeding 5,000 kg/mm2 measured in one test. The results of the wear tests show that TiB2 coatings have relatively poor wear resistance compared with alumina in low-speed unlubricated sliding environments, but exhibit wear properties comparable with alumina in high-speed unlubricated sliding environments.

Characteristics of metal/non metal mines were evaluated to determine the suitability of applying the U.S. Bureau of Mines electromagnetic location system to the problem of locating trapped mines in metal/non metal mines. Statistical distributions of mine depths and overburden conductivities show that the existing USBM EM system is inadequate for most metal/non metal mines. Alternate approaches to trapped miner location in deep mines were identified and subsequent field tests were conducted at six (6) mines to evaluate their feasibility. The approach considered to be the most promising is one which utilizes the existing manpack transmitting system, modified slightly for a dual frequency output, in conjunction with a sophisticated signal processing receiver on the surface. The main advantage of staying with a "through the earth" approach is that the underground equipment can be kept simple, easily maintained, light-weight and inexpensive.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with a southwestern Pennsylvania coal mining company, BethEnergy Inc., Mine No. 60, Eighty-Four, PA, recently assessed the feasibility of using pre driven recovery rooms (open entry recovery) when longwall mining to increase the productivity of the coal extraction process. Two recovery entries, one 200 ft long and another 600 ft long, were supplementally supported with bolts, channels, and wire mesh, and either fly ash-cement piers or fiber cribs, then mined into by the longwall face. The recovery entries showed little deterioration as the supports provided adequate resistance to the front abutment loading. Compared with conventional recovery methods, the fullface recovery room allowed for panel extraction to be completed nearly 17 days faster and to reduce face equipment move time by 1-1/2 days. The potential productivity increase accompanying recovery rooms is greater than the cost of supporting a fullface recovery room. The fullface recovery room provided over 18 additional production days and the opportunity to mine nearly 68,400 st of coal per year per panel mined.
