The Bureau of Mines conducted research to develop triggered barrier systems for protection against gas explosions that can occur in underground coal mines during the use of continuous miners. Several extinguishing agents were tested in barriers at a simulated mine face. Water, powered by pressurized nitrogen, was found to be efficient in stopping fully developed gas explosions, but it had little effect against the explosion during its incipient stage. Hybrid combinations of currently known extinguishants, however, were successful against incipient explosions. Three hybrids that were developed and tested consisted of Halon 1301, combined with either an aqueous foam solution, water, or a dry chemical powder. The three hybrids were found to be more efficient than any constituent alone. Results of the tests point to a synergism between the hybrid components, and indicate that the Halon aids in dispersing its constituent and also converts the aqueous foam solution into a stable fine foam and the water into fine drops.

As part of the Bureau of Mines program to reduce U.S. reliance on foreign suppliers of strategic and critical metals, research was conducted to improve technology for the recovery of critical metals from hardface alloy grinding waste, a form of superalloy scrap. This report describes a hydrometallurgical process that demonstrated on a laboratory scale that 79 pct of the chromium, 97 pct of the cobalt, 99 pct of the manganese, 99 pct of the nickel, and 90 pct of the tungsten could be recovered in chemical form from hardface alloy grinding waste. The process involved deoiling the grinding waste, followed by chloride-based dissolution of the deoiled material. A high-grade calcium tungstate (CaW04) product was recovered from the resultant leach residue by caustic leaching and precipitation. Iron, cobalt, man-ganese, and nickel chlorides were sequentially recovered from the leach liquor by solvent extraction. Amine extractants were used to extract the iron, cobalt, and manganese; decanal oxime was used to extract the nickel. Market-grade cobalt chloride (CoCI2), manganese chloride (MnC12), and nickel chloride (NiCl2) products could be produced directly from the resultant strip liquors. The final raffrnate was a relatively pure chromic chloride (CrCI3) solution that compared favorably with commercial solutions.

This report summarizes results of bench-scale metallurgical studies by the Federal Bureau of Mines on three composite samples representative of the low-grade manganese ores purchased by the General Services Administration (GSA) and stockpiled at Deming, N. Mex., and Wenden, Ariz. Bench-scale flotation tests at the Salt Lake City Metallurgy Research Center showed that all three composites could be beneficiated by flotation to recover 88 to 90 percent of the manganese in concentrates that assayed from 38.5 to 39.0 percent Mn, 10 to 12 percent insoluble, 5 percent CaO, 3 to 5 percent Fe, and 1.3 to 1.7 percent combined Pb plus Zn plus Cu, Sintering studies indicated that specification-grade material could be made from these concentrates by sintering above 1,000° C, and adding either sodium or calcium chloride to the charge to insure removal of enough lead and zinc to meet the specifications.

This report describes a method of measuring and analyzing the initial deformation which occurs in the medium surrounding a mine accessway as the opening is created. Discussed are (1) the hypothesis upon which the research is based; (2) the in situ rock-deformation measuring equipment developed; (3) the field tests, consisting of measuring the deformation of the medium around two 4-foot-diameter raise bores as the boring progressed; and (4) a finite-element technique to correlate theoretical with experimental results, using elastic theory. Described also are the raise-bore operation and performance. The instrumentation developed proved to have the sensitivity and resolution necessary to measure rock deformation around a full-scale raise bore during excavation. Tests show the relationships of rock deformation to progress of the raise boring and to time. The initial deformation of the opening appeared to be elastic. Using the deformation records and an estimated field stress, the modulus of elasticity was determined for the rock mass. In addition, the importance of this type of measurement in assessing support-problem areas is discussed.

The Bureau of Mines investigated methods of refining iron-contaminated zinc to marketable quality and developed a laboratory-scale process in which aluminum, added as a refining agent, reacted with the iron, forming solid Fe2Al which floated to the surface of the melt. Solids were separated by both filtration and centrifugation, using a unique type of "dipping" centrifuge devised during the work. Typical zinc recovery was 95 percent, and iron content of the metal was lowered from 0.37 to 0.02 percent.

The Production Profile Program is written for use on a Digital Model PDP 11/70 computer using a Fortran IV level G language. It may be run on any system which uses G level or an upward compatible version of Fortran IV language. Please note, however, that the Model PDP 11/70 for which the program was written is programed to read DEC026 type keypunching. If the user's computer is programed for another type of keypunching it may be necessary to re-keypunch the Production Profile Program. The Production Profile Program uses a fourteen card input. The data must be keypunched according to the layout described in detail in the multiple card layout forms (following). The output from this program must be printed on wide paper, as a full 120 columns are used. The samples of output at the back of this appendix have been reduced for inclusion in this report.

MFIRE is a computer simulation program that performs normal ventilation network planning calculations, and dynamic transient state simulation of ventilation networks under a variety of conditions. The program is useful for the analysis of ventilation networks under thermal and mechanical influence. MFIRE simulates a mine's ventilation system and its response to altered ventilation parameters, external influences such as temperatures, and internal influences such as fires. Extensive output enables detailed quantitative analysis of the effects of the proposed alteration to the ventilation system Network simulation using digital computers has become widespread throughout the mining industry in recent years. However, as the sophistication of the simulator increases (MFIRE, for example), the complexity of input data requirements and interpretations of results requires more skill and knowledge from the users. Perhaps the most difficult part of using MFIRE is to construct the data set describing the mine's physical layout and its ventilation properties. The initial attempts to get the data set running often reveal unknown or ignored aspects of the mine's ventilation. MFIRE was written in Fortran 77 and compiled with Microway1 Fortran for the Intel 80386 based computers with a 80387 math co-processor. The source code is portable and available for users who wish to modify the source code to operate on other computers. This user manual describes the development of MFIRE, the input format and requirements, the output, common errors, fire parameters, and examples MFIRE application. Valuable reference material is included in the appendices. Knowledgeable users may skip directly to the PROGRAM INSTALLATION AND OPERATION section to begin using MFIRE immediately.

The kinetics of leaching galena with ferric chloride and ferric nitrate have been examined as a function of ferric concentration, salt concentration, temperature and particle size. Diffusivity of ferric complex ions was also established as a function of ferric chloride concentration and temperature. In the presence of 3 M NaCl, leaching rate is controlled by product layer diffusion when ferric chloride is added as oxidant. With NaCl concentrations less than 3 mole/liter rate decreases with decreased NaCl concentration, and, thus, rate is apparently not controlled by product layer diffusion. It is suggested that rate is controlled by lead chloride solubility at the reaction interface under these conditions. When ferric nitrate is added as oxidant, leaching rate is limited by chemical reaction control. An electrochemical model is presented. Activation energies are 8.1 and 11.3 kcal/mol in the ferric chloride and ferric nitrate systems, respectively.

This report describes the effects of water shortage on Arizona's mineral industries. The information presented was obtained in interviews with company representatives. Operations covered included all State metal mines using substantial quantities of water and all concentrators and smelters. Also included in the survey were 8 operations in the nonmetallic group; 22 in the plating, metal-fabricating, and metal-forming categories; 1 public-utility power company; and 6 water companies. The extent of the water shortage in Arizona is reflected in mineral- industry water-use practices, in the high cost and low quality of water used at many operations, and in the stringency of State control of well drilling and pumping. Many mineral-industry operations are among those users most seriously affected by the uneven water supply.

A survey of endomycorrhizal fungi occurring on orphan coalmine lands in Western and Eastern Kentucky revealed a great diversity of species present. Thus a large number of fungi are available for isolation and evalution for enhancing revegetation of mined land. Endomycorrhizal fungi isolated from orphan mines stimulated growth of sweetgum seedlings on mine soil at low fertilisation but inhibited growth at high fertilization; this growth inhibition at high fertilization did not occur with plants growing on peat-perlite. Banding of endomycorrbizal inoculum was not advantageous, compared with incorporation of inoculum throughout the growth medium, for production of mycorrhizal sweetgum seedlings. Newly reclaimed mine spoils were nearly nonmycorrhizal, compared with land reclaimed four or eight years earlier. A procedure for isolation of single-spore cultures of endomycorrhizal fungi was developed; this procedure is necessary for studies of ecotypic variability. A practical procedure using container-grown Pisolithus tinctorius-infected shortleaf pine seedlings for production of large numbers of bareroot pine seedlings infected with P. tinctorius for mined land reclamation was demonstrated.

MORE THAN 30 MILLION EMPLOYEES each year are exposed to hazardous occupational noise, and approximately one-third of them develop permanent hearing loss (NSC, 2000). Possible explanations for the latter statistic include worker regard for noise as a mere nuisance rather than as an occupational safety and health hazard, and consequent neglect of established protective measures (e.g., hearing protection); lack of knowledge concerning noise; improper use of hearing protection; worker indifference; and inadequate training (Bauer & Babich, 2004). Many drill rigs generate high sound levels, which vary according to the type of machine, its location with respect to the physical surroundings, and the location of the sound measured around the rig. A NIOSH study measured noise output from several types of drill rigs during field investigations (Ingram & Matetic, 2003). Two types of data were recorded the actual noise generated by the drill rig at various positions around the rig and the noise to which the drill operator was exposed during the drilling cycle. For the latter, sound level measurements up to 120 dBA were recorded while hammering casing (metal on metal) in drilling a water well (Photo 1). Several types of administrative controls exist to address worker exposure to loud drill rig noise. Rotating duties to decrease exposure time and posting warning signs in high-noise work areas are two such controls. Another is the use of hearing protection. Worker use of hearing protection has been disappointing, however. One study by the University of Michigan found that construction workers used earplugs and earmuffs only between 36% and 61% of the time that they were necessary (Lusk & Kerr, 1998). In a 2001 study, OSHA reported a relatively low rate of 30.4% for use of earplugs among construction workers (Walker, 2001). Why are rates for hearing protection use so low? One explanation may be workers' lack of concern for noise in the workplace. They expect workplace noise to be a loud and in¬ evitable nuisance and, therefore, accept it as part of the job. As a result, they disregard proven measures that can protect their hearing. Other workers may use hearing protection, but do so improperly. They may misguidedly remain in high-noise areas for extended periods thinking they are protected when in fact they are not. Other reasons for low use and/or misuse of hearing protection include poor education, lack of awareness and inadequate training (Nash, 2003). To address the training issue, NIOSH developed two exercises from which drillers can learn about noise, hearing loss and hearing protection. This report describes the approach, procedures, and results of a program to develop training materials for roof bolter operators. The objective of the program was to design and produce a training sequence which would prepare roof bolter trainees for job performance. Data was collected and analyzed using the general procedures of Instructional Systems Development (ISD). Input data came from a previous roof bolter training analysis program. This data was expanded and structured through a series of ISD steps: objectives hierarchies, media selection, syllabus, lesson specifications, and train¬ing materials development. The resulting program consisted of an ordered sequence of 15 lessons. The media mix for the 15 lessons included lectures, slide-tape lessons, and hands-on instruction using operational roof bolters. Contents of all lessons were reviewed and approved by the Bureau. The key recommendations were to (1) validate the materials and measure relative effectiveness of media formats; (2) survey mines for training resources and conditions - match materials to user capabilities, rather than selection state of the art technology/media; (3) develop job performance aids (JPAs) rather than simulators; (4) create a style/media/JPA development guide for use in future projects of this kind.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated 42 composite samples from selected Michigan-Wisconsin iron formations by reductive roasting-magnetic separation and flotation at minus 325 mesh. Samples having poor to marginal response on initial examination by conventional methods were reevaluated by finer grinding, by reagent suite modifications, and by selective flocculation-desliming techniques. Results ranged from excellent on Menominee Range samples to relatively on Gogebic Range ores. Marquette Range samples ranged from responsive to nonresponsive, depending upon grain size and mineral association.

Gaseous and particulate exhaust emissions from 20 diesel engines in service at five underground mines were measured with high accuracy instrumentation. The engines that were tested were checked for faults or maladjustments. The vehicle and engine maintenance organization was studied at each mine and an idealized maintenance program was devised. Faults were induced in a new diesel engine to determine their effect on the characteristics of the exhaust emissions. The results, conclusions and recommendations from this investigation are presented in this final report.

This circular, which is a revision and combination of two previous publications,3 4/ presents information on the different types of equipment that may be used to analyze mine atmospheres, with particular reference to the application and limitations of each type. Such information is frequently requested by mining companies, State mining departments, and other agencies concerned with safety in mining who wish advice regarding methods of analysis of mine atmospheres and the equipment necessary for establishing laboratories for that purpose. Since the Haldane-type apparatus is particularly applicable to the accurate determination of carbon dioxide, oxygen, and combustible gases such as methane in mine atmospheres, that apparatus and the method of operation are described in detail. The circular presents results of a critical study of the accuracy attainable with the Haldane-type apparatus in the determination of methane in concentrations of the order of 0.25 percent, by volume. Analytical procedures involved in the other methods discussed are presented in publications referenced in this circular. Information is given also on the various accessory equipment needed in a laboratory for the analysis of mine atmospheres, and suggestions on laboratory design are included. This report gives the result of investigations of coals of different rank, coal com¬ponents, chemically and thermally treated and irradiated coals, and sedimented organic matter. In most studies the arbitrary parameters obtained from the usual quantitative profile analyses are not given largely because they lack physical meaning. Instead comp interpretations are offered. X-ray patterns of high-volatile bituminous and lower rank coals are not self¬-sufficient for structural interpretation by the methods of analysis developed to date. The patterns of hydrogenated and dehydrogenated coals indicate that the basic change in the structure of bituminous coals with increase in rank is the conversion of alicyclic structures into aromatic layers. In low-rank anthracites the aromatic layers are about 10 A in size. The increase in rank is the result of coalescence of layers. High-rank anthracites have layer sizes of 25 to 40 A and exhibit the development of three-dimensional (hkl) reflections of graphite, indicating ordering of adjacent layers. In meta-anthracites the layers are > 1000 A and the basic structure is that of defective crystalline graphite. The well-known petrographic components in low-rank coals have different structures; the differences dissappear in low-volatile bituminous and higher rank coals. The patterns of sedimented organic matter, except impsonites, differ from those of coal hydrogen contents are high, and their X-ray patterns are consistent with those of structures. In contrast to normal coals, the patterns of uranium-bearing coals show increased diffuseness with decrease in hydrogen content. The diffuseness is accompanied by increase in the uranium content of the coal. It is very likely that high uranium-bearing coals have predominantly tetrahedral structures.

The mass spectra of 14 previously unreported alkylthiophenes are pre-sented. Low ionization voltage data of selected compounds from these 14 and 23 previously reported alkylthiophenes are presented and discussed for their value in supporting fragmentation mechanisms analytical correlations. A comparison with and corroboration of earlier correlations is made. Additional correlations concerning detection of side chain branching and the detection of ethyl-alkyl and propyl-alkylthiophenes are made. A discussion of the possible fragmentation routes and mechanism of fragmentation is given. Speculative structures are inferred s out some of the ions and hence this work provides a basis for suggesting fation mechanisms for the alkylthiophenes according to modern theories ass spectrometry. Verification of these mechanisms must await the availability of isotopically labeled molecules which are labeled in specific lotions that permit the definition of the paths of frag-mentation. Some suggestions for further work to generalize on the correlations and studies made to this point are presented.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop an alloy of columbium for use at high temperatures and for nuclear applications. The properties of possible alloys were determined, and the more promising ones were selected for further improvement. Criteria for selection were machinability, hardness, workability, tensile strength, and oxidation resistance. Thirteen 100-gram ingots, ranging from 100 percent columbium to 100 percent vanadium, were prepared and subjected to various tests. Also included for comparison were zirconium and the zirconium alloy, zircaloy-2. Test results showed that a columbium alloy, containing 10 atomic percent vanadium merits further development. Besides being workable at room temperature, the columbium-10 atomic percent vanadium alloy has oxidation resistance superior to the other alloys of the series and is also superior to zirconium or zircaloy-2. The latter two materials have comparable neutron-absorption cross sections. The strength and hardness values of the alloys tested were found to increase with increasing vanadium content, reaching a maximum at 50 atomic percent vanadium and decreasing with further increase in vanadium. This behavior is typical of binary alloys wherein each element will retain any proportion of the other in solid solution. INTRODUCTION There is an increasing need for alloys for service at high temperatures. Since current world reserves of columbium metal approximate 1,500,000 tons (1),4 this metal is now readily available. Columbium can ties; be considered a practical base material for high-temperature alloys required in nuclear reactors and in aircraft and space vehicles. General requirements chosen are: (1) Workability, (2) satisfactory mechanical properties at temperatures approaching 1,000° C., and (3) resistance to oxidation at such temperatures.
