"Methods and costs of rock-dusting bituminous coal mines have been discussed in various publications by the United States Bureau of Mines and others.3 This paper discusses the present methods and cost of dusting at the Swastika mine of the St. Louis, Rocky Mountain and Pacific Co., Raton, N. M.In the Swastika mine the recommendations of the United States Bureau of Mines with regard to rock-dusting are followed at least as well as in any mine in the States of Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico. This mine is located at Swastika, N. M., approximately 4 miles west of the town of Raton and is in the Raton coal seam. The mine is rated as gassy and produces approximately 1,000 tons of coal per day.A mining system known as the ""room-and-pillar with cut-offs"" is used which results in recovery of nearly 100 per cent of the coal. The mine employs approximately 250 men.Ventilation is maintained by a Sirocco fan so arranged that the air current may be reversed and exhausting approximately 130,000 cubic feet of air per minute at 3 inches water gauge. This fan is supplemented by two auxiliary fans for emergency use. Three main entries penetrate the hill in a straight line for approximately 8,000 feet. The haulage is through the center entry, which is also used as the intake in conjunction with a two-compartment concrete-lined shaft located at the end of the entries. The main return for 3,000 feet inby the fan is 12 feet wide and 7 feet high. For this distance the ribs have been reinforced by a wall made of coke-breeze blocks plastered over with cement. Solid concrete blocks are used for the top row of blocks of the wall. Steel 10-inch I-beams spaced 40 inches apart center to center are supported on these solid blocks and thus support the roof. The next 1,000 feet inby has the same area, but the cement blocks extend to the roof, as no crosspieces are needed. The airways are kept clean and well rock-dusted.A rather unique system is used to handle gas feeders along the intake and haulage entries. There these feeders occur in the roof or where gas is apt to collect in high points along the haulage, tin funnels as large as 3 feet in diameter are placed near the roof. From these a 2-inch or other suitable-sized pipe is run into the return through the wall of the nearest break-through. A valve on this pipe line controls the amount of air pulled. These devices keep the high places clear of any gas, even when strong feeders are encountered.Fifteen-ton electric trolley locomotives are used on the main haulage and approximately 30 roller-bearing oars, each having a capacity of approximately 3,000 pounds of coal, compose a trip. All loaded tripe carry steel drags on the last car, and automatic derails are located at advantageous points throughout the mine.All loaded trips are thoroughly sprinkled on the sectional partings and at the main parting. The track is sprinkled every idle day, or if needed, every day; from a large tank mounted on a truck hauled by a motor. Neither nozzle nor spray is used, as these were unsatisfactory. The water leaves the tank. through a 11/2-inch valve and is permitted to flow on the road through a horizontal 11/2-inch T. Water is obtained from filling stations located throughout the mine. It is stated by the officials that the use of this method of sprinkling permits the entire haulage roadbed to be wetted down in two hours."

"INTRODUCTION A considerable part of the metallurgical work of the Precious Metals Section comprises ore-testing experiments on ores selected as representative of various mining districts on areas. Projects authorized by the Bureau and assigned to the Precious Metals Section generally include only those ores or tailings in which the precious metals are the main valuable constituents; however, there are also included ores that contain strategic or critical metals in addition to the precious metals. The recovery of strategic and critical minerals is the most important phase of the treatment of this latter class of ores. However, if a considerable percentage of the precious-metal content of such ores can be recovered without complicating the flow sheet too much, it may be possible to treat an ore for the recovery of strategic or critical metals that could not otherwise be treated at a profit.Standard testing procedure involving cyanidation, amalgamation, gravity concentration, and flotation, or a combination of these methods, is employed in the greater part of this work. However, as the complexity of the ores furnished for this work has increased, it has been necessary to include special applications of standard procedures in many instances, Standard methods of conducting tests and the purposes of the work as a whole have been discussed in previous reports 4/ of ore-testing studies. In the present report, whenever it has been necessary to apply some special phase of standard treatment, this has boon explained in detail in that particular section of the report."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been conducting research to optimize the design and utilization of mine roof support systems. An objective of these efforts is to evaluate the mechanical and structural responses of various mine roof support systems under simulated load conditions in the Bureau's mine roof simulator. Underground studies are also made to evaluate the in situ behavior of support structures. The purpose of this report is to document practical applications for longwall face and gate road supports that have resulted from these studies. This report is not intended to be an all-inclusive manual on every aspect of support utilization, but it does provide a comprehensive assessment of practical considerations relating to the mechanical and structural behavior of these support systems. Forty-six recommendations are made to provide assistance to mine operators in the testing, selection, and utilization of longwall face and gate road supports. Many of these recommendations offer innovative solutions to everyday problems faced by mining personnel in the control of ground in longwall mining.

This Bureau of Mines study is an appraisal of the demand for platinum, should this strategic metal be used as a. catalyst in the National abatement of automobile exhaust pollution. The Clean Air Act 0f 1970, as amended, requires that automobiles produced in 1975 and thereafter be provided with antipollutive measures to control automotive exhaust emissions. The study considers the need for automobile pollution control, the methodology for such control, the annual primary (new) platinum demand for automobiles produced from 1975 to 1990, primary platinum availability, and supply-demand forecasts and outlook. The correlative demand for platinum for the production of the required unleaded gasoline is also considered. Methodology for the study included a forecast of new automobile production from 1975 to 1990, development of automobile survival and retirement data, estimates of new platinum demand under various conditions of salvage, and data on recycling the precious metal from the catalytic converters of scrapped vehicles and existing vehicles when their spent converters are exchanged for replacement units. The new platinum demand for automobile exhaust converters, based on a converter service life of 50,000 miles, is estimated to be 1.41 million troy ounces initially in 1975, rising to 1.68 million in 1980, and declining curvi-linearly to 0.94 million in 1990. The platinum demand for converter longevities other than 50,000 miles can be derived from the tabular data presented. An appendix to the report presents a comparison between longevities of 50,000 miles and 25,000 miles. The petroleum industry's demand for new platinum for the production of lead-free gasolines could total as high as 1 million troy ounces between 1972 and 1981, just for expansion of isomerization and reforming capacity, and is in addition to normal operating demand for this metal.

"The various districts in the United States where complex lead-zinc ores occur are too well known to require description, there being hardly a mining State with any large amount of ores of either metal that is free from this problem. This paper briefly presents developments in the volatilization process, as applied to the treatment of such ores, since the data in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 211** were published. In that bulletin, among the many types of ore treated, examples are given of the treatment of lead-zinc ores by the chloride volatilization process for the separation of lead. An outline of the general process, with views of the rotary kiln, ore feeder, firing system (these three features resemble closely those of cement-kiln practice), dust chambers, and a Cottrell precipitator to remove the fume from the gas, are also shown in that bulletin, to which the reader is referred for the results obtained, and for practical details of operation. The small initial cost of a volatilization plant, and its adaptability for use in isolated districts were emphasized.In general, it was found that when an intensely oxidizing atmosphere was maintained in the furnace, a good lead-zinc separation could be made. Therefore, a heavy sulphide ore would have to be preroasted, and enough air would have to be admitted to obtain complete combustion of whatever fuel might be used.The work done by private companies and the bureau since the data for Bulletin 211 were obtained, indicates that the ores most immediately amenable to treatment by volatilization are of two types. The first is an oxidzed lead. silrer ore whose variable lime content makes it impractical to chloridize the ore for acidulated brine leaching, and whose base metal content makes treatment by cyanidattion unfeasible, The second type is the lead-zinc ore mentioned above, and is the one on which data are available for publication at present. This article Chows what ores of this latter type are amenable to treatment by volatilization, by giving briefly some of the more important physical and chemical properties an ore should preferably possess. Several examples are given from both laboratory experimental work, and from practice in the field, showing various phases of the volatilization process."

The Bureau of Mines conducted a flammability study of plastic ventilation ducts. Six rigid 16-in-diam fiberglass-reinforced plastic ducts from five manufacturers were examined using laboratory-scale, large-scale, and full-scale fire tests. The laboratory-scale tests included the American Society for Testing and Materials E162 radiant panel test, the E2863 oxygen index test, and the standardized small-scale flammability test (S3FT) developed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), U.S. Department of Labor, and replicated by the Bureau of Mines. Ten-foot lengths of the same ducts were also subjected to a large-scale vertical fire test, and 20-to 30-ft lengths were tested in a full-scale in-mine fire test at the Bureau's Lake Lynn Laboratory mine. The data from the laboratory-scale radiant panel test and oxygen index test indicated that the ducts were fire-resistant, However, five of the six ducts failed the S3FT and vertical fire tests, and four of the ducts failed the full-scale in-mine tests with flame propagation rates that ranged from 3 to 10 ft/min. The results indicate the need for improved fire-resistant plastic ducts. The good agreement between the S3FT re-sults and the vertical and full-scale tests show that the S3FT provides a good indication of the flammability of fiberglass-reinforced plastic ducting under realistic fire conditions.

This Bureau of Mines report describes a simple fire-retardant treatment for wood. The treatment involves preheating the wood surface at high heat flux (~0.6 cal/cm2 sec) to form an in situ surface char layer (~3 mm thick) on the wood. Laboratory-scale fire tests show that the precharring technique improves the fire-resistance of virgin wood by decreasing and delaying generation of volatile gases through thermal insulation effect of the surface prechar layer.

Etchants containing hexavalent chromium and sulfuric acid are used in a variety of surface-finishing operations. When the resultant spent solutions are discarded, substantial quantities of chromium are lost and pollution prob¬lems are created. To minimize the undesirable environmental effects while improving metal and minerals recycling technology, the Bureau of Mines is con¬ducting research on a method for the economic inplant recycling of these waste etchants. Trivalent chromium, produced when the etchant reacts with a substrate, is oxidized in the anode chamber of a diaphragm cell; other metals, dissolved during the etching operation, are transferred to the catholyte. When waste brass etchants are treated in this manner, all of the trivalent chromium is oxidized and more than 40 percent of the copper and zinc is removed. Similar copper removal and chromium oxidation are achieved with waste printed circuit board etchants and rinse waters from plastic etching operations. The electrical energy needed to regenerate 1 kg sodium dichromate is less than 9 kwhr. Regenerated brass etchants evaluated by two companies equaled or exceeded the performance of fresh etchants.

Caesium, rubidium, and lithium are sometimes described as the minor or rarer alkali metals. They generally occur together in nature, although, lithium is distributed more widely and is far more abundant than either of the other two. The chemical, and even the physical, properties of these three elements can best be considered In conjunction with the more familiar members of the alkali group, sodium and potassium. The five elements lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, and caesium show an interesting gradation properties from member to member with the increase in atomic weights. All are silvery white and soft enough to be cut with a knife. They tarnish rapidly in air and decompose water at ordinary temperatures. The lowest temperature at which the action of the several metals on water can be de¬tected is -98°C. for sodium, -105°C, for potassium, 108°C. for rubidium, and -116°C. for caesium. Light emitting diodes (LEDs) are emerging as viable replacements for incandescent-based cap lamps used in mining. The photometric and energy characteristics of these light sources differ in important ways. The present paper describes the performance of LED and incandescent sources in cap lamps in terms of correlated color temperature, color rendering, light output, electric power, ambient temperature and airflow, and light source aging. Importantly, these characteristics can influence a miner?s ability to spot mining hazards thus impacting safety. Secondly, some of these characteristics interact with the operating life of the cap lamp?s battery power, such that differences between LED and incandescent sources can be magnified toward the end of a 10­hour battery discharge cycle. Empirically, we have determined that after 8 hours at an ambient temperature of 25 °C, the average light output of an incandescent cap lamp can decrease to about 69% of its initial value when powered by a lead-acid battery and it can decrease to about 65% of its initial value when powered by a nickel-hydride battery. An LED-based cap lamp using a constant current drive circuit can maintain about 96% of its initial value when powered by a nickel-hydride battery. Real-world tests addressing the effects of ambient temperature and airflow on the light output of an LED and incandescent cap lamp were conducted in the NIOSH Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM). The LED cap lamp yielded a vertical average illuminance improvement of approximately 9.5% and the INC cap lamp yielded a vertical average illuminance degradation o f approximately 4%. The differences between LED and incandescent cap lamps were further quantified by the calculation of ?mesopic luminance? data that indicated for the same photopic luminance (i.e., as measured using a conventional light meter) the LED cap lamp could be up to 38 % more efficient than the incandescent cap lamp with a lead-acid battery at the end of the 10-hour driving cycle. Lastly, accelerated life tests were used to empirically determine light output depreciation as the incandescent light source age approached its useful life. There was about a 35% decrease in light output. This is quite considerable, especially given that the light output will decrease an additional 30% to 45% over the period of a 10-hour shift. The implications of the differences between LED and incandescent sources are discussed. This information is crucial in determining how visual performance could be affected for real-world conditions where batteries discharge during the work shift and as the light source ages. To date, only idealized conditions have been used for LED and incandescent cap lamp visual performance research.

A computer program has been devised to calculate the reservoir performance of water floods of complicated well - spacing patterns . The method and program have been tested by calculating the waterflood performance of fivespot patterns using oils of different viscosities and the performance calculations agreed closely with laboratory results . The program on a high - speed digital computer will process the performance prediction in about 1 minute , which is very rapid for a prediction using so much fluid mechanics and nonlinear geometry . The program has been presented in such a way that one may use it as given and save the time required to write and " debug " one of his own . gram processes a complex reservoir analysis , many of the complicated steps are explained in detail , both for the fluid mechanics and the directions for the computer . Historically, coal miners have known that roof shales can deteriorate in contact with humid mine air, causing massive roof falls and injuries from falling rock. It is critical to recognize rocks prone to weathering and to adequately support these rocks in order to ensure the long-term stability of the openings. In a recent study, NIOSH has used a wet/dry cycling test to determine the moisture sensitivity of over 800 specimens of roof rock from 25 U.S. coal mines. Fireclays and some gray shales are the most moisture-sensitive. Rocks with disturbed bedding, in contrast to flat-bedded rocks, are also more sensitive to water. Black shales are relatively un-reactive to moisture and serve to protect more reactive gray shales above. Mines that have roof rocks with moisture-sensitivity indexes above 40% can experience slaking roof conditions, and many require high coverage surface controls. Three case studies are presented in which the moisture-sensitivity index is correlated to roof conditions underground, and can be used to indicate long term deterioration. Engineering measures are described to control moisture-sensitive roof. In one case, roof screen not only reduces injuries from rock fall but also is shown to reduce roof falls. From the most remote periods of civilization, stone Las been used to perpetuate the memory of individuals or to immortalize their noble achievements. Ancient memorials ranged from simple piles of stone (cairns) or single markers to great obelisks and pyramid or magnificent mausoleums. The Taj Mahal at Agra, India, built of white marble by Shah Jehan in memory of the Empress Mumtaz Mahal, is one of the most beautiful and costly memorials ever built. It was erected between 1632 and 1050 at a cost estimated at a: high as $50,000,000, and it is today an object of unusual attraction for travelers. Other magnificent memorials, both ancient and modern, are to be found in many lands. Memorials of varying design have characterized the passing centuries and have found an important place in the New World. In early days, monuments were chiefly imported into America, but gradually an extensive memorial stone-manufacturing industry developed on this side of the Atlantic. Sales value of domestic memorials, f.o.b. quarry or mill, attained a maximum of $17,488,755 in 1920, and retail sales, of course, reached a much higher figure. Modest markers and tombstones are to be found in almost every rural community in the United States, and there are many elaborate and costly monuments in and near urban centers.

An experimental hydraulic jetting device intended to operate in a 16-in-diam borehole was designed, fabricated, and used to cut coal and simulated coal samples. This device consisted of two 0.107-in-diam nozzles that rotated in a plane perpendicuIar to a 50-inch length of high-pressure tubing. Experi¬ments were also conducted with stationary jets issuing from a single 0.142-in-diam nozzle. Numerous experiments were performed using systematic variations of jet parameters coupled with assessments of cutting rates. These Bureau of Mines tests showed that when operated at 4,000 psi pressure and a 40-gpm flow rate (1) the device can fragment coal up to a distance of 8 feet from the nozzle, (2) 4,000-psi jets cut more effectively than lower pressure jets with the same nozzle diameter, (3) stationary jets do not cut as effectively as moving jets, (4) interkerf breaking occurs when the kerf spacing is less than 2 inches, and (5) if the kerfs are spaced <1/2 inch, the jet is deflected and thereby reduces cutting effectiveness.

Oxidation procedures based on the chlorine-hypochlorite system were investigated for improving gold recovery from carbonaceous gold ores. The oxidation pretreatment prior to cyanidation was accomplished by (1) addition of sodium hypochlorite to ore pulp, (2) by addition of chlorine to ore pulp, and (3) by generation of hypochlorite in situ by electrolysis of a brine solution used to pulp the ore. Gold extraction of 90 pct was achieved by cyanidation of carbonaceous ore that had been pretreated with 20 Ib per ton sodium hypochlorite at 50° C for 4 hours. Similarly, pretreatment of the ore pulp with 35 1b chlorine per ton at 24° to 30° C and 15 hours reaction time resulted in 89-pct gold extraction by subsequent cyanidation. Concomitant studies showed that electrolyzing the pulp prepared with a brine solution was equally as effective as electrolyzing hypochlorite and chlorine for oxidizing carbonaceous ore constituents that are deleterious to cyanidation. Gold extraction of 90 pct was obtained by electrolysis when 275 lb of are was treated at 200 amp for 7 hours in an 8-to 10-pct salt solution. Power consumption was in the range of 60 kwhr per ton.

This work was done to develop methods for increasing the yields and purity of vanadium prepared by bomb reduction of vanadium compounds . Compounds reduced were V₂ 05 , V203 , VC , and VC13 . Sodium , calcium , and magnesium were used as reductants . Variables considered included reductant form , bomb size , pressure during reaction , method of ignition , and the use of slag fluidizing additives . It was concluded that yields of 85 to 90 percent can be effected by the calcium reduction of V205 in reactors measuring as much as 14 inches in diameter and 60 inches in height . Optimum charge composition included V₂05 , 65 percent excess calcium , and 0.4 moles sulfur per mole vanadium . Purity of the vanadium produced in large reactors varied from 99.5 to 99.8 percent . The higher purity metal , depending upon the amounts of interstitial impurities present , was usually cold ductile . Although high yields of up to 99.5 percent can be effected by bomb reduction of VC1 , the high pressures developed in the bombs and attack of the reactor walls by the byproduct chloride slags discourages this method of preparing vanadium . It was found that significant purification of impure regulus metal occurred when it was hydrided , crushed , acid leached , and vacuum dehydrided . Metal so treated can readily be converted to ductile sheet . A cost estimate based on the production of 100 tons of vanadium per year was prepared . It was concluded that pure ductile vanadium could be produced for approximately $ 20.00 per pound .

Drying and preheating (partial induration) the green, unfired iron ore pellets is a means of reducing the energy required to produce metallized pellets. The Bureau of Mines processed three magnetite and two hematite concentrates through the unit operations of pelletizing, preheating in air, and reduction to metal to determine the effects of preheating upon the properties of the metallized pellets. The pellets were prepared in a 16-inch-diameter laboratory balling drum. Preheating and metallization were carried out in an externally heated 4-inch-ID by 4-inch-long stainless steel drum using air for the preheating atmosphere and lignite char as a reductant. The results &apos;varied considerably: two of the magnetites spalled when preheated in air at temperatures of 900° C and above, and the third magnetite and the hematite flotation concentrate required complete induration at 1,300° C to produce satisfactory pellets. The earthy hematite ore yielded excellent pellets at all preheat temperatures.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted research on methods to reduce and to measure diesel particulate matter (DPM) aerosols in underground coal mines. One objective of this report is to present findings from an investigation of the DPM reductions obtained by an engine-mounted integrated control system consisting of a dry system (DS) and a diesel particulate filter (DPF). Another objective is to present results from the usc of a size selective personal sampler to measure DPM concentrations in an underground coal mine. Bureau laboratory tests of the integrated dry system and diesel particulate filter (DS-DPF) have shown that DPM emissions can be reduced up to 97 pet with little change in gaseous emission concentrations. The DS-DPF is undergoing certification tests conducted by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Subsequent to passing all safety requirements, it will be tested in an underground coal mine. A baseline survey of DPM concentrations and aerosol size distributions in a cooperating mine was completed in August 1988. A prototype DPM personal sampler was tested during this survey. Based on results from this test, an improved unit has been developed. This unit is scheduled for extensive field testing by MSHA in 1989.

Hydrogen sulphide associated with natural gas was noted as early as at Point Albino, Canada. The presence of this impurity was recognized also in other of the earlier oil and gas fields, although the occurrence was by no means common. However, in recent years, with the development of the producing zones of test Texas and the Texas Panhandle, the Production of "sour" crude has increased greatly and hydrogen sulphide has proved a generally troublesome factor--frequently a major problem--in the drilling and operation of many wells in those areas. The problems arising from the drilling and producing of oil or gas wells in hydrogen-sulphide areas, fall under two general divisions: safety problems and corrosion problems. Mention is made of a third division which is closely related to the other two, that of treating--or the development of processes for the removal of hydrogen iron the standpoint of safety and health hazards, hydrogen sulphide in the petroleum industry has been discussed in a number of publications. Likewise, the problem of hydrogen-sulphide corrosion of production equipment has been given considerable attention in the literature.

The solubility of 1,1,2,2-tetrabromoethane (TBE) in water was determined from 1.0° to 97.0° C. The solubility (S) of TBE in grams of solute per 100 grams water was correlated with [S = 1,920.55 [exp (40292L7 11, T2 10 T 737.577 + 9.923962 ] where T is in degrees Kelvin. A thermodynamic analysis conducted on a system consisting of a TBE phase and a water phase in equilibrium with a vapor phase led to the calculation of the activity coefficient, vapor-liquid equilibrium distribution coefficient, relative volatility, and heat of mixing for saturated solutions of TBE in water. Data required for these calculations were the solubility of TBE in water and the vapor pressures of TBE and water as a function of temperature.
