The anchorage capacity of four types of bolting systems was investigated in two mines with thick coal roofs. In conjunction with the in-mine tests, a simple axisymmetric finite element computer program was developed. Both the field and computer results indicated that thick coal roofs can be effectively supported entirely by the coal member.

Discovery of these unusual fluorite deposits was brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines late in 1951, shortly after the first locations were made. A brief investigation of the deposits by the Bureau revealed seven principal outcrops of fluorite in two areas. The smallest outcrop continuously exposes massive fluorite over an area 25 by 55 feet; the largest outcrop is a similar exposure 180 by 240 feet. The deposits appear to be sharp-walled, low-angle-, tabular ore bodies in granite and are at least 10 feet thick. The Bureau investigation of the deposits included bulldozer strip-trenching, drilling and blasting rock cuts, and channel sampling across three of the largest outcrops. This sampling indicated an average grade of 97.2 percent CaF2 and 1.44 percent SiO2. Preliminary metallurgical tests on the ore indicate that it can be concentrated to acid-grade specifications by simple gravity methods. One laboratory test recovered 78.4 percent of the fluorite in a product containing 98.7 percent CaF2, 0.25 percent SiO2, and 0.10 percent Fe2O3.

The coking time has considerable influence on the throughput of a coke oven, and for this reason a large number of papers dealing with the relationship between coking time and the different operating variables have been published. Although all factors known to influence the coking time have been studied, agreement has not been reached on several questions.2/3 Therefore, it appears worthwhile to evaluate any data that become available during investigations of the carbonizing properties of various coals and coal blends. Because it is expected that reports covering several different phases of this problem will be forthcoming as additional data-become available, the following study of the relationship between coking time and bulk density represents a report of progress on the overall investigation of factors influencing the coking time in slot-type ovens. The practice of including coarse coal in the blend going to the ovens to obtain increased bulk densities is well known. Similar increases have been realized by adding small quantities of oil to the coal mix. Although it would appear that such procedures provide inexpensive methods for increasing the capacity of existing coke-oven installations, Ramsburg and McGurl4/ point out that this increase is possible only if the additional coal can be carbonized in the same coking time as regularly employed without using abnormally high flue temperatures. This statement is in substantial-agreement with the position of Auvil and others5/ and implies that any change in bulk density may be accompanied by a corresponding change in coking time. On the other hand, a recent review of proposed methods for calculating the time required for carbonization6/ includes a number of equations that completely ignore the effects of variations in bulk density.

During the course of a study of the safety organizations of the various iron mining companies in the Lake Superior district considerable in¬ formation regarding the methods of safety inspection in use was obtained which may be of value to other companies beginning safety work or contemplat¬ ing changes in their methods. A short description of the safety-inspection methods of eleven of these companies is given in this paper, and in the appendix are illustrated a number of forms used for safety inspections by several of the companies. Most of the companies whose methods are described use few forms for formal inspection. The one long form (10) attached which is used for a general in¬ spection by the safety inspector appears to present a good method for enabling the inspector to check all branches of his inspection and to assure himself that everything has been covered. All names of companies have been deleted from this paper and from the forms because the object is to disseminate information of constructive value rather than to point out the methods of particular companies by name.

"While serving as surgeon with rescue car No 11 of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the writer visited the principal metal-mining camps of Utah during the latter part of 1919. In visiting the mines, meeting and conversing with miners, and talking over the medical situation with physicians in the various camps, the number of cases of lead poisoning encountered was great enough to attract attention.With a view to procuring more definite information as to the number and distribution of cases of lead poisoning throughout the State, a study of the records of the State Board of Health was undertaken. Utah had no ordinance re¬quiring the reporting of occupational diseases, so it was not possible to secure data an cases A study of the mortality records by years gave the following results.:Year Deaths from lead poisoning.1910,11911,01912,21913,11914,61915,41916,11917,31918,11919,2These few deaths would seem to indicate a fairly low case rate, but when it is realized that lead poisoning is rarely an immediate cause of death and that the train of sequelae in this disease frequently leads to chronic involvemeets of the digestive, nervous, circulatory or genito-urinary systems, it is apparent that the number of deaths showing lead poisoning as the cause can not be taken as an index of the cases prevalent. The time elapsing between the presence of the active signs of lead poisoning and the terminal illness from pathologic conditions excited by lead absorption may be years, and the initial cause, lead poisoning, is frequently lost sight if entirely, hence the death certificate shows no evidence of the primary cause."

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Com¬mittee of the Coordinating Research Council (CFC) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36. 4/ Further re¬ports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.4/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of l941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed. The present report presents analytical data for 3,011 samples, representing the products of 113 companies. Most of the samples represented in this report were obtained during July and August 1946. As in previous surveys the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 1,585 samples, 311 items, and 99 -brands; premium-price, 1,422 samples, 280 items, and 94 brands; third-grade, 4 samples, 4 items, and 4 brands. The U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Geological Survey are responsible for the evaluation of the mineral resources and potential of further planning areas included in the U.S. Forest Service Roadless Area Review and Evaluation (RARE II) program. The Bureau of Mines primarily evaluates mineral deposits and prospects within the areas. The Geological Survey naps the area's geology and conducts geochemical sampling. Evaluations are in conformance with the Forest and Rangeland Renewable Resources Planning Act of 1974 as amended by the National Forest Management Act of 1976. The Hauser RARE II area, which consists of 7,600 acres (3,100 ha) within the Cleveland National Forest, is in southern San Diego County, California. The area, which forms the north slope of Hauser Canyon, ranges between 1,600 and 3,919 ft (490 m) in elevation. It is sparsely to densely covered with desert shrubs. The area is underlain by granitic rocks of the Peninsular Ranges batholith.

Natural gas has been used as a fuel and source of energy almost from its discovery, but its use as a chemical raw material may be said to have begun in 1918, when Brooks and Humphrey3/ showed. presence of alcohols in the diluted acid oil obtained by the sulfuric acid-treatment of cracked petroleum distillates. However, development of the utilization of natural gas for chemical syntheses was slow, partly because erroneous ideas existed regarding the nonreactivity of tine hydrocarbons composing natural gas. Data accumulated by petroleum chemists throughout the world, particularly since about 1930, have shown that these hydrocarbons will react when activated by the effects of heat, pressure, chemical reagents, and light; also that the reactions can be made to proceed of practicable speeds and to provide good yields of useful products with moderate operating conditions, especially if catalysts are employed. As those results became known, the possibility of a synthetic organic chemical industry based upon these reactions became apparent, and today this industry is large and growing rapidly in importance. In this paper the story of the manufacture of chemical products from natural gas is told simply in graphic form. The industry is developing so rapidly that soma products may have been omitted, but every effort has been made to include all that are important or likely to become so. The difficulty of keeping information of this tape up to date is shown by reference to an information circular4/ or, the sore subject published by the Bureau of Mines in 1930, in which the important products are shown on a single chart, where as five charts are employed for the cane purpose at present.

This publication describes methods and techniques of mining and crushing limestone at 3 of 11 small quarries operated by Anderson-Oxandale Rock Co. in northeast Kansas in 1959. It is one of a series of reports by the Bureau of Mines on methods and costs of mining in various mining districts in the United States. The three quarries selected for study -Bosse quarry, Pottawatomie County; Hansen quarry, Morris County; and Huston quarry, Dickinson County (fig. 1) -were in many respects similar to many others that had been developed solely to fill local and usually transitory demands for crushed limestone for use as concrete aggregate, roadstone, and soil conditioning. Factors governing the choice of quarry sites were quality of limestone, shallow overburden, and proximity to points of consumption of the crushed stone.

To provide a means for accurately and reliably warning of impending roof falls or rock bursts and for evaluating support systems. The Approach: Development of a device for measuring rockbolt loads which is not affected by harsh environments nor by eccentric loading conditions and is easily adapted to various size rock bolts. How It Works: The Rock-Bolt Tension Load Cell, developed by the Bureau's Spokane (Wash.) Mining Research Center, is installed on a bolt and sandwiched between a conventional doughnut washer bearing plate and a torqueing nut (Fig. 1). As the bolt takes load, the bearing plate transmits the load axially to the cell through a ball and socket arrangement, compensating for uneven bearing surfaces. The cell body strains in proportion to the applied load: the strain is sensed by welded strain gages as change in electrical resistance. The resistance change is read through a Wheatstone Bridge and, through calibration, the applied load is determined.

Studies were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to develop a process for preparing thorium-magnesium master alloys or pure thorium metal by magnesium reduction of thorium tetrachloride in a semicontinuous reactor. Thorium tetrachloride was prepared in a fluidized-bed reactor by chlorination of thorium oxide or thorium oxalate. Conditions were established for producing a suitable thorium oxide feed for a fluidized-bed reactor. Thorium tetra-chloride was purified by vacuum sublimation and subsequently reduced by magnesium in a semicontinuous reactor to form thorium-magnesium alloys. Relatively pure thorium was produced by removing magnesium from the alloys by vacuum sublimation. Close to 100 percent of the thorium fed into the reactor was recovered either as metal (~93 percent) or as thorium oxide (~7 percent). The oxide can be recycled directly into the process.

A table that greatly simplifies determination of metastable transitions in mass spectra has been prepared. All the mathematically possible metastable transitions of any compound whose molecular weight lies between 26 and 150 can be determined from the table without calculation. The method of utilizing the table is described, using selected peaks from the spectrum of normal butane for illustration. In the mass spectrometer, ions are formed in the isatron and accelerated through a series of slits. Most of these ions reach the collector without further change, but a few dissociate in transit to form new ions. These ions appear in the mass spectrum at neither the mass--to-charge ratio (m/e) of the original ion nor that of the new ion. Comparative data from ASTM method of test E-162 and large-scale trials in the Experimental Mine show that the flame-spread quality of brattice cloth and other ventilation control materials can effectively be evaluated by either method. Materials having a flame spread index of 25 or less, as determined by the simpler and more economical laboratory test ASTM E-162, do not present a serious fire hazard when used in coal mines.

"An important function of the Bureau of Mines is promoting the conservation and more efficient utilization of a natural resource. Petroleum is such a resource, and its utilization depends to a considerable degree upon its characteristics. For this reason the Bureau of Mines, over a period of years, has analyzed many samples of crude petroleum by the Bureau of Mines Hempel method 3/ and published complications of crude-oil analyses. Among such publi¬cations are several reports presenting analyses of crude oils from fields in Oklahoma. The most recent of these relates to samples from southern Oklahoma. 4/ The present paper provides additional analyses of Oklahoma crude oils, largely from areas and formations not heretofore represented in published reports. The analyses of 248 samples from 153 fields are presented individually and collectively in the tables of this report.Crude oil has been produced in Oklahoma in commercial quantities since 1891, and peak production was reached in 1947. The State's cumulative production to January 1, 1944, is, according to the American institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, 5,186,466,000 barrels. 5/ The annual production of crude petroleum in Oklahoma for each year from 1891 to 1943, inclusive, is given in table 1."

"This information circular discusses drilling and blasting in open-cut iron-ore mines and is one of a series of papers describing iron-ore mining practices in the Lake Superior district to aid in preventing accidents in that industry.The Lake Superior district consists of the Marquette and Menominee ranges of Michigan, the Gogebic range of Michigan and Wisconsin, and the Vermilion, Mesabi, and Cuyuna range of Minnesota. Open-cut mines produce 8o percent of the iron ore mined in the district; 98 percent of the total Lake Superior district open-cut ore is produced in Minnesota and 2 percent in Michigan. The entire Wisconsin iron-ore production is from underground nines. The Mesabi range in Minnesota produced 93 percent of the open-cut iron ore and 76 percent of the total iron ore in the district in 1947.During the 8-year period 1940-47, 619,000,000 gross tons of iron ore were shipped from mines of the district, or 85 percent of the United States output. Approximately 78,000,000 gross tons of iron ore were shipped from the mines of Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin in 1947.This paper is based primarily on observations daring the period July 1947 to March 1948. Thirty-two open-cut mines were visited; 28 on the Mesabi range, 3 on the Cuyuna range, and 1 on the Marquette range. In 1947, 36,100,000 tons of iron ore was shipped from these 32 mines, or 59 percent of the open-cut ore and 46 percent of the total iron ore shipped from the district. During 1947 about 90 open-cut iron-ore mines were operating in the district, and the annual production of each ranged from 25,000 to 10,000,000 tons.Many recommendations included in this paper for improving safety and preventing injuries to employees were taken from Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7387.Data were collected under the direction of Frank E. These formations are designated by one commonly applied name, ""iron formations.""4/The Mesabi range in northern Minnesota, about 70 miles northwest of Duluth, was opened to mining in 1892; it is the largest single source of iron ore in the United States. It is 75 miles long and, because of the gentle dip of the ore formation, it ranges in width from 1-1/2 to 3 miles.5/ The ore formation, which is nearly horizontal, has a maximum thickness of about 450 feet and is covered by a glacial drift that ranges from 10 to over 100 feet in thickness. In This Chapter [Drill dust control: wet and dry Enclosed cabs on drills and mobile equipment Haul road dust control] Overburden drilling generates most of the respirable dust that affects workers at surface mines. Both wet and dry methods are available to reduce this drill dust. Overburden removal by mobile excavation equipment such as bulldozers, front-end loaders, and haulage trucks can be dusty, particularly under dry and windy conditions. Tightly enclosed cabs with dust filtration systems can substantially lower the dust exposure of both drill and mobile equipment operators. Haul road dust control can be achieved by water application or chemical application. DRILL DUST CONTROL [Drill dust is controlled with wet or dry systems. Wet systems can be more efficient, but may freeze in the winter. Dry systems require careful maintenance of the drill deck shroud. An improved deck shroud is shown.] Wet Suppression. Wet drilling systems pump water into the bailing air from a water tank mounted on the drill. The water droplets in the bailing air trap dust particles as they travel up the annular space of the drilled hole, thus controlling dust as the air bails the cuttings from the hole [Page 1991]. In wet drilling systems, typical water flow rates are 0.1 to 2.0 gpm depending on the size and type of drill and the moisture level of the overburden. The drill operator controls the flow using a control valve located in the cab. Some drills are equipped with a flow meter to give the opera-tor a visual sign of the flow rate. Raising the water flow will improve dust capture, but too much water causes operational problems. Because of this, the drill operator must exercise care in find-ing the best water flow rate.

This report describes the preliminary results of a Bureau program to develop and test an inexpensive grout for full-column support of roof bolts. Various inorganic grouts were tested in both cartridge and slurry form. Tests were also performed on methods of water packaging and on the effect of fillers on the grout strength. Results showed that some grouts had poor early strength and exceptional mid-to long-term strength. Laboratory tests have shown that rapid-setting inorganic grout could be an economical replacement for resin bolts if the short-term strength could be increased. Further development to improve its early strength would need to be tested in the laboratory and underground to prove its potential for the mining industry.

Beryllium deposits in the northern Virgin Mountains , Clark County , Nev . , and Mohave County , Ariz . , about 70 miles northeast of Las Vegas , were investigated by the Bureau of Mines . The investigation indicated a widespread occurrence of beryllium- bearing pegmatites within an extensive belt of mica - schist . Several deposits with significant beryllium mineral concentrations were encountered . Only a few of the samples analyzed contained more than 1 percent beryllium oxide ( BeO ) ; in many of the samples , no beryllium was reported . The average tenor of samples from the more important occurrences was 0.25 percent BeO . Chrysoberyl is the predominant beryllium mineral in the pegmatite sills ; beryl predominates in the more massive bodies . Minute quantities of cesium and lithium minerals also occur , but no columbium , tantalum , or other rare minerals were found . Ore dressing tests on a composite sample containing 0.28 percent BeO which was representative of the pegmatite sills , indicated an 85 percent recovery of the chrysoberyl ( 70 percent recovery of total BeO ) by gravity concentration in a concentrate containing 17.6 percent BeO .

Longwall tailgates in coal mines are often subject to severe mining induced loading and deformation. Innovative tailgate supports have been developed over the years to provide safe and economical access and a ventilation pathway at the tailgate. The support capacity and yield capabilities of the supports need to be matched to the loading imposed by the surrounding rock mass. The ground response curve can be used to represent the rock mass response to mining and its effect on support systems. The FLAC finite difference code was used to supplement field results by simulating a longwall tailgate and the associated ground response. The ground response curve is developed by modeling tailgate excavations with different internal support pressures and recording the resulting convergence. Ground response curves are developed for two typical longwalls operating in the Pittsburgh seam with weak and strong immediate roof. An additional model is presented in which the effect of weak overburden strata is simulated. The ground response is shown to be significantly affected by the strength of the immediate roof as well as the main roof. The importance of yield capacity of standing support is demonstrated. Gob height and compaction are found to affect the amount of convergence in the tailgate. The potential exists to develop site specific tailgate design curves by combining model results with field observations.

A remote heat-activated stench gas/tracer gas mine alarm system was developed to reduce the time between fire detection and personnel notification. The stench gas/ tracer gas system contains ethyl mercaptan for personnel warning and a fluorocarbon for tracer gas detection by instrumentation. A system was also developed which can be interfaced with multiplex mine phones. In-mine tests were conducted and several systems are presently installed in a hard rock mine.
