This Bureau of Mines study estimates typical capital investments, operating costs, and selling prices for two bituminous coal strip mines in the Eastern and Interior provinces and a subbituminous coal operation in the Northern Great Plains province. The annual productions were based on tonnage required to fuel a 250-MM-scfd, high-Btu gas plant. The annual tonnage for the Eastern province mine is 4.8 million tons; for the Interior province mine, 6.72 mi 11 ion tons; and for the Northern Great Plains province mine, 9.2 million tons. It is assumed that the mines have a 20-year life. Wages and union welfare payments are considered as of May 12, 1974, under the terms of the Bituminous Wage Agreement of 1971, and costs for material and equipment are based on 1973 and early 1974 indexes . Initial capital investment varies: $45,358,600 for the 4.8-million- ton-per-year (MM tpy) mine in the Eastern province, $54,603,000 for the 6.72 MM tpy mine in the Interior province, and $29,871,000 for the 9.2 MM tpy mine in the Northern Great Plains province. Total capital invest-ments for the Eastern province mine, the Interior province mine, and the Northern Great Plains province mine are $61,070,000, $76,753,000, and $56,286,000, respectively. Corresponding selling prices for the coal, per ton, are $4.79, $4.23, and $2.66, assuming a 12-percent discounted cash flow rate of return after Federal income taxes. These studies are considered typical for the areas involved. Costs will vary depending on specific locations in these areas.

The Bureau of Mines has developed two experimental designs for deter- mining the volumes and relative proportions of the various gas species, particularly methane (CH4), occluded in rock salt. To date, the rock salt samples analyzed have been relatively small (400- to 1,000-gram) grab samples from Louisiana Gulf Coast domal salt mines. The results obtained are comparable to results in Polish domal salt mines, in terms of occluded gas volumes per mass of rock salt. The notable difference between the Louisiana and Polish occluded gas mixtures is in the relative proportions of the individual gas species. The two methods used by the Bureau are ballmill crushing and dissolution. Of the two, the dissolution method appears to be more versatile because it can be performed in situ. The relevance and applicability of data on the occluded gas contents of rock salt are dependent on sample size, sample collection method, geologic context of the sample, and the correlation with gas emissions that occur as a result of mining-induced fractures and pressure differentials.

The increasing activity in oil shale has had a tendency to direct the attention of the industry to any substance from which gasoline or other oils can be secured . Cannel coal for many years has been known, as a source of oil and formerly it was the only substance from which kerosene was obtained . The name of coal oil was given to kerosene because it was derived from cannel coal before any flowing wells were brought in in the United States . In an isolated region in Southern Utah there is an unusually thick and clean bed of cannel coal which laboratory experiments indicate can be made to yield about seventy gallons of oil to the ton . This coal was first described in Bulletin 341 of the United States Geological Survey under the title of Colob coal field . This field lies at the western and southern base of the Colcb plateau and extends from the town of Cedar City southward to Kanarra and then southeastward to the town of Mount Carmel . Cedar City is 35 miles south of east from Lund on the Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad which is the nearest railroad point . Mount Carmel is about 90 miles south of Marysvale , on the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad , which is the nearest railroad point from the eastern end of the field . The Colob coal occurs in Lower Cretaceous rocks and a number of wagon mines have been opened on the seam in the vicinity of Cedar City , Kanarra , and Mt. Carmel , but between these places the field has been very little prospected . The cannel coal , so far as known at present , is limited to a small area on the head waters of the north fork of the Virgin River in Township 39 and 40 South , Range 9 East . In this region it occurs as a bed 5-1 /2 feet thick over which lies a layer of bituminous coal 2 feet and 5 inches thick .

"INTRODUCTION Throughout the history of coal washing, the jig has been one of the most important coal-cleaning appliances. In 1935 34.7 percent of the 45,361,021 tons of clean coal produced was the product of jigging. 4/ Previous to 1928, most of the jigs used in the United States were of the piston type, with which sufficient mobility to allow stratification in bed is imparted by the reciprocating up-and-down movement of a piston in the water compartment adjacent to the screen compartment. In 1928, the Baum type of jig was introduces in this country and has since come into wide spread use. In this type, water pulsations are imparted by application and release of compressed air to the water compartment. All prior studies of the mechanism of seperating cleared coal from impurity by piston-type jigs. 5/ The same laws of settling, of course, apply to both types, piston or Baum, but the character of the separation with the Baum type may be modified more easily because of the flexibility with which air may be handled, as distinguished from the fixed action of eccentrics commonly used in piston jigs. Since no detailed studies are available to show the performance, that is, the character of the separation between coal and impurity, of the Baum type the Bureau of Mines undertook the investigation recorded in this report."

The computer program XRF4 was designed by the Bureau of Mines to provide for the calculation of several different interelement correction procedures in X-ray fluorescence analysis, including Lachance-Traill, Rasberry-Heinrich, and Claisse-Quintin procedures. The program was written in the BASIC language for timesharing application, and a conversational interaction with the computer is employed during operation. This report presents test problems using data for iron-nickel-chromium alloys and aluminum alloys and directions for use of the program.

This is the fourth progress report in the series on the use of detachable rock-drill bits in the metal mines of the United States. It contains comparative statistics and costs or drilling at eight mines not reviewed in previous reports, comparison of the use of detachable bits at small mines and large mines, a discussion on the life of drill rods, and general conclusions derived from an analysis of the rock-drilling practice at all the mines investigated on this survey. This paper completes the descriptions of operating practice in rock drilling at individual mines. Data on drilling practices at 28 mines are given in appendices I and II and drilling costs are shown in appendix III. Research in the fundamentals of rock drilling, including the use of detachable bits, has been undertaken by the Bureau of Mines in its testing adit at Mount Weather, Va. Reports on the progress off this investigation will be issued when results warrant their publication.

The Bureau of Mines performed cratering experiments in a homogeneous granite to test scaling laws for charge weights of 0.00476, 0.0220, 0.0900, 0.304, and 1.03 lb. Agreement among the data was best when empirical scaling exponents greater than one-third were assumed. Although the analysis showed that the best empirical scaling exponents were 0.37 for crater volume, 0.38 for crater radius, and 0.39 scaling for crater depth, all three crater dimensions could be scaled with a 0.38 scaling exponent.

The size and accessibility of the Minnesota manganiferous iron ore deposits make them attractive as a potential source of erromanganese, which is essential in the production of steel. For several years the Bureau of Mines has been conducting experiments to determine the feasibility of producing ferromanganese from these ores by a three-step process which involves (1) the smelting of the ores in the blast furnaoe to produce a high-phosphorus spiegel; (2) the treatment of the spiegel produced from step 1 in an electric or open-hearth furnace to separate the manganese from the phosphorus and the iron; and 3) the smelting of the high-manganese slag from step 2 to produce forromanganese. The details of the first two steps of the process and the results of tests with the experimental furnaces Lave been given in previous reports.5 The m$ or part of the experimental work on the second step has been conducted in a half-ton open-hearth furnace. Some preliminary tests showed, however, that the electric furnace has some distinct advantages over the open hearth for producing, from high-phosphorus spiegel, a slag containing from 45 to 55 per cent manganese and phosphorus and iron in amounts required for ferro-grade ore. The electric furnace tests described in this paper were made to get more information as to the possibilities of the electric furnace in connection with this problem and to study the fluxing effect of alumina on high-manganese slags. Herty, Conley, and Royer have reported' results of laboratory tests which showed that slags containing from 60 to 75 per cent MnO, from 8 to 10 per cent S102, and small amounts of CaO MgO, and FeO, were sufficiently fluid at 1,450° to 1,550° C. to pour readily if 12 to 14 per cent alumina was present. "Introduction**The progress of the ""Safety First"" movement in the oil fields of California during the past few years has been remarkably rapid. It has been generally concede by those who have learned to value the life and limbs of their employees, that safety is essential to efficiency and no company that has a high accident rate can be considered an efficient organization. Accidents have a destructive effect on the morale of any body of workers and cause disorganization and delays.The increasing danger to life and limb involved in the drilling for and the production of oil and gas, has become so great that it is clearly evident that everything possible must be done to keep it within the narrowest possible limits.There is a tendency toward carelessness, especially by men who are employed in hazardous occupations. This is brought about by the familiarity of the risk under which they are working and in no industry is this more forcibly exemplified than in the oil fields. Men have performed the same or similar duties for many years and have worked around similar hazards and unprotected machinery until many have can entire disregard for the dangers surrounding then. Very often familiarity with a hazard occasions a contempt for that hazard which only too often results disastrously."

The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has identified ore pass hazards as a significant safety problem in underground metal mines in the United States injury and fatality data show that many injuries are related to pulling or freeing ore pass chutes and structural failures of control gates and ore pass walls. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are investigating these hazards and developing methods to improve safety during transport of ore and waste. Particle flow analysis methods were used to simulate chute and control gate response to various material loading scenarios. Results from computer models indicate that dynamic impacts from ore and waste rock might be considerably greater than theory predicts. Static and dynamic loads were measured in a laboratory setting using scaled ore (sass mock-ups. Field tests were initiated in an active ore pass to determine actual static and dynamic loads. Field data were compared to computer results and indicated that impact and total static loads were substantially less than the computer model results suggested. Damping factors, normal and shear stiffness, and mass frictional characteristics have a significant effect on particle flow and resulting impact loads.

To allow the controlled yielding of mine walls in order to reduce rock-burst hazards and reduce maintenance caused by excessive squeezing forces. Approach Rock bolts that elongate and continue to sustain a load, have been fabricated and tested. This device is an adoption of a concept originally developed in South Africa for use where unusually adverse conditions may warrant the added cost. How It Works A coupling in the rock bolt allows controlled elongation if the load increases beyond the bolt's design strength. (The load can build up either slowly, as during heaving, or rapidly, as before a rock burst.) The elon¬gation of one or more rock bolts surrounding a mine opening, allows the rock to move from its original position to c new position in a controlled manner. In the interest of safety in mining, the Bureau of Mines recommends: 1. That cages or skips used for hoisting or lowering men in vertical and steeply inclined shafts shall be provided with safety catches designed to prevent falling of the cage or skip if the hoisting rope or other connections break; and 2. That cars used. for hoisting or lowering men with ropes in slopes shall be provided with arresting devices, other than ordinary brakes, that come into action if the hoisting rope or other connections break. In presenting this decision, it is recognized that the principal requirements for safety in hoisting operations are the use of hoisting ropes of ample size and strength to provide a factor of safety recognized as adequate by the best en engineering practice; their proper care, protection against undue wear and corrosion, and frequent inspection; and immediate removal of ropes from service when inspection or tests cast doubt upon their further safe serviceability.

Quickly and cheaply consolidate underground slimes to facilitate their use as backfill and permit their easy handling for other reasons. Approach: The slurry containing slimes is pumped into active stopes and electrokinetically dewatered to provide consolidated back fill. How It Works: To densify slimes electro-kinetically two electrodes are placed in the material to be dewatered and densified. Typically, the electrodes are pieces of wire mesh fencing. One is placed on the bottom, and the other is suspended in the slurry near the surface. Figure 1 is a simplified section of a test. A d-c voltage of 100 to 400 volts is applied across the slurry. This causes the solid particles which are in suspension in the water (usually these are negatively charged) to migrate toward the anode; simultaneously, the water moves toward the cathode. Water immediately adjacent to the negatively charged solid particle surfaces contains an excess of dissolved positive ions. The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the performance of portable power cables under transient conditions. This research had a twofold purpose: (1) to define the thermal characteristics of electrically overloaded trailing cables, and (2) to conceptualize electrical protection for cables that allows maximum cable efficiency without diminishing electrical safety in underground mines. Several tasks were undertaken in support of these goals during the 3-year research effort. Overload tests ranging from 2 to 12 times rated ampacity were conducted in the Bureau's Mine Electrical Laboratory. Two thermal models of energized type G-GC trailing cables were constructed, one based on thermodynamic theory and the other using empirical data from previous Bureau load tests. The empirical model was then incorporated into an interactive computer program that can assist designers and approvers of mining machines in selecting the appropriate size trailing cable. This program can be the basis for a cable protection system that ensures that cables are not the source of fires, ignitions, burns, or explosions underground.

Future coal mining systems will be able to cut from crosscut to crosscut where advances could exceed 100 ft. However, limitations arise when ventilating such mining systems. In deep advance mining, there would be no workers at the face to advance ventilation tubing or curtain manually. Traditional methods also provide no means for maintaining face ventilation after the miner backs away from the face. U.S. Bureau of Mines research is studying means to provide effective ventilation at cut depths beyond the current limit of 4D ft. Several innovative ventilation schemes are currently being considered. One such method is the use of a jet fan to ventilate a deep cut. A jet fan is simply a freestanding fan using little or no ducting to direct the ventilation flow. Jet fan testing in a 90-ft entry revealed that higher exit velocities and greater penetration depth occurred when various configurations were used to confine and direct the air flow. Additional testing also indicated that 2,200 cfm of fresh air was delivered to the face? 90 ft distant when a check curtain was used to limit entrainment around the fan. Without this curtain, this quantity dropped to only 1,000 cfm. This testing indicated that a jet fan was capable of providing ventilation to a distant face area. It also highlighted potential problems, such as recirculation at the fan and reentrainment in the jet flow. Despite these potential problems, jet fans may be adequate for ventilating cuts exceeding 4D ft.

This paper is one of a series of digests of foreign mining legislation and court decisions that is being prepared in advance of a general report relative to the right of American citizens to explore for minerals and to own and operate-mines in various foreign countries. This interpretation of the mining laws of Greece was prepared from information furnished by Ralph B. Curren, American assistant commercial attache, Athens, in reply to a questionnaire of the United States Bureau of Mines, transmitted through the courtesy of the commercial laws division of the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce. INTRODUCTION In his report,3 Mr. Curren states that the source of his information was the Director of Mines of the Greek Ministry of National Economy and the Mining Code of Greece, which was, compiled from existing laws in 1929,4 and which has since been modified by several acts of Parliament.

Two major problems in the operation of air preheaters for boilers are corrosion and the accumulation of deposits on the heating surfaces. Corrosion or loss of metal necessitates replacement of parts; the accumulation of deposits decreases the size of the gas and air passages, resulting in increased pressure drop for the same gas flow, and also affects the heat transfer. These items, either singly or together, limit the capacity and efficiency at which the equipment can be operated and affect its availability, even causing undesirable shutdowns under extreme conditions The field and laboratory work on regenerative air preheaters described in this report covers research on the relative corrosion resistance of different materials, such as various metals, special metal coverings, and fired clays, and studies on deposits, their nature, analyses, and corrosive effects. This is the first report on cooperative work of The Air Preheater Corp., of New York City, and the Federal Bureau of Mines.

The Sectional Committee on Classification of Coals, functioning under the sponsorship of the American Society for Testing Materials and the rules of the American Standards Association, in its 1934 report recommended to the American Society for Testing-Materials5 that Specifications for Classification of Coals by Rank be adopted as tentative. These specifications, slightly modified as recommended by the Sectional Committee, in its 1935 report,6 wore approved as tentative standards by the society in 1935. The specifications rover the classification of coals according to their degree of metamorphism, or progressive alteration, in the natural eerie s from lignite to anthracite. The basic scheme of classification is according to fired carbon and calorific value (expressed in B.t.u.) calculated to the mineral-matter-free basis. The higher-rank coals are classified according to fixed carbon on the dry basis, and the lower-ran]: coals according; to B.t.u. on the moist basis, that is, containing its natural bed moisture but free of visible surface moisture. Agglutinating and weathering indices arc used to differentiate between certain adjacent groups.
