This information circular is one of a series the Bureau of Mines plans to publish describing the methods and costs of mining uranium on the Colorado Plateau. The Temple Mountain mining district is unique among the uranium-producing areas on the plateau. This relatively isolated mining district is in Emery County, Utah, on the eastern flank of the San Rafael Swell, about 35 miles southwest of the town of Green River. The district lies just within the eastern escarpment of the San Rafel Reef - a rampart of rugged and tilted sandstone cliffs that encircles the highly eroded core known as the Sinbad Country. The presence of petroleum matter found associated with the ore deposits, the occurrence of uranium in various formations, and the structural deformation caused by collapsed features have aroused a great deal of geologic interest. Mine development on Calyx Flat is distinctive, in that the ore deposits are worked through 36-inch calyx-drill holes.

The United States Bureau of Mines under provisions of Schedule 2C4 issues approvals covering complete operating units such as loading machines, room hoists, and storage-battery locomotives. Certain manufacturers design and build entire machines. Other manufacturers purchase a part or all of the electrical accessories from manufacturers of electrical equipment and make up permissible units by assembling them. Before the assembler purchases electrical accessories for use in such contemplated units he may require certain information from the accessory manufacturer as to whether the particular accessories are suitable for assembly in his proposed permissible outfit. To aid accessory manufacturers in marketing their product, a provision was incorporated in Schedule 20 whereby tests might be made on individual accessories and reports rendered as to the suitability of a given accessory for use in permissible assemblies.

Sampling of heterogeneous mixtures of fused metals or solidified melts is subject to errors not met in sampling finely ground ores or granular materials. These errors arise largely because of the segregation of constituent metals that usually takes place during solidification. It is seldom that a random sample of a lot of metal will represent the composition of the entire lot. The problem becomes especially difficult when it is necessary to make accurate analyses for a segregated impurity present in very small amounts. This paper discusses some of the pertinent experimental observations made in selecting a method for sampling melts of aluminum and zinc containing small amounts of iron and silicon as impurities. Although this experimental study dealt only with sampling this specific combination of metals, many aspects of the study apply generally to any mixture of mol ten metals containing minor constituents that segregate rapidly during freezing of the melt.

[This Is the ninth in a series of reports on properties of commercial motor fuels, made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the interior. The first report gave data on motor gasoline sold during the winter of 1935-36.3/ The Present report presents analytical data for 2,033 samples, representing the products of approximately 80 companies, which, as in previous surveys, include both large and small suppliers. In addition, the Pacific coast is represented by data that were average by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before 'being submitted and are published exactly as they were received. As in previous surveys, the data are divided into the three groups of samples of regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines, and each group has been averaged separately. The cumber of samples, items, and brands comprising each group, exclusive of those of the Pacific coast, arc as follows: Regular price, 1,066 samples, 208 items, and 49 brands; premium price, 575 tamales, 154 items, and 38 brands; third-grade gasoline, 7;4 samples, 150 items, and 53 brands. Approximately 6,000 coal mines are operated in the United States. All of them have in some degree the elements that are likely to contribute to an explosion, hence it is surprising that explosion disasters are not more frequent and that many mines have been operated for years and finally worked out and abandoned without experiencing an explosion. The absence of coal-mine explosions does not always indicate that effective efforts have been made to prevent them but rather that the nine has been fortunate in that the combination of circumstances necessary to cause an explosion has not existed. In view of present knowledge of the methods of preventing explosions, disasters are inexcusable and discredit the mining industry. The methods of preventing mine explosions are known to experienced, well-informed persons engaged in coal mining, yet despite this knowledge far to many coal-mine operators continue to use practices and methods that they should know have resulted in numerous explosions. Moreover, many mine workers persist in following past procedure irrespective of consequences and in breaking safety rules or indulging in practices almost certain eventually to result in disaster. Continued failure to apply known common-sense methods of accident and explosion prevention unquestionably will cell for ultimate enforcement of law.

This document reports the results of a two-year research effort aimed at improving communication systems used in coal mines. This work was conducted under a program whose original goal not only involved the development of practical and effective electronic systems for operational communications, but also for monitoring, at a central location, remote instruments at key positions in a mine. About half way through the originally proposed three year effort, the program was redirected to phase out the communication effort at the end of two years and to concentrate the program" resources on the investigation of new monitoring system concepts developed by this research. Thus, the work reported here is incomplete relative to the originally pro- posed program. However, the work was carried to the point of providing sufficient evidence to aid in the comparison of certain new communication concepts. For the concepts chosen for this study, the work was stopped short of hardware development and field testing, Several reports in the form of Master's theses and a Doctoral Dissertation have resulted from this research. They each report in considerable detail the results of several individual" contributions to this program. In preparing this report, an attempt has been made to provide a complete description of the significant results but with- out burdening the reader with the minute details. These more detailed reports are referenced heavily for the convenience of those interested. PRESENT COMMUNICATION METHODS Two types of communication systems are presently used In coal mines. They are: 1, Various forms of telephone systems, and 2. Carrier current radio systems using the trolley line as the interconnection circuit. Carrier current radio is used almost exclusively for control of rail trafflc by the dispatcher. Almost all other communication uses the telephone system, Telephone lines generally extend to areas where trolley lines are not present such as the outside offices and warehouse. Therefore the telephone system provides the primary means of voice communication. Telephones - Telephone systems employed in American coal mines fall into three categories. 1. Paging type telephone systems - these systems have individual stations which use battery powered transistor audio amplifiers to boost signal levels for normal communication. When in the page mode,

U.S. supply and demand data for coal, by States and regions, were tabulated for the years 1960 and 1965. Estimates are provided of State-by-State quantitative data for the coal industry that can be integrated into State and regional energy balances by source, form, and consumer sectors, and used for estimates of interstate and interregional energy flows. The tables give an estimated total supply of coal available for consumption, and also report the distribution of the supply among the major consuming sectors (household and, commercial, industrial, transportation, and electricity generation). To enable comparison of coal data with those for other energy forms, tonnages were converted to British thermal units (Btu). Future energy analysis studies could be facilitated by changes in the categorization of information collected on the coal industry. The data shown are based primarily on Bureau of Mines source material.

The rapid depletion of zinc-lead ore reserves and the rising costs of exploration have been major factors in the decline of mining activities and explorations for additional reserves in the Tri-State mining district. There is a need to develop new or adopt known, improved exploration techniques that will appreciably lower the costs of exploration. Demonstration of the practicability of using improved techniques to indicate, rapidly and cheaply, mineralized areas or geologic structures where more intensive explorations are justified could stimulate the search for and discovery of additional ore reserves. Various operators in the Tri-State district have used geophysical surveys to some extent since 1928 to guide exploratory drilling. Some geophysical investigations have also been made in the district by the State Geological Surveys of Kansas (11)3/ and Missouri (8, 13) and by Federal agencies (16), with the objective of directing exploratory drilling to areas where geologic conditions favored ore deposition. Many factual data obtained have not been published. The investigations generally have not been broad enough to permit conclusive evaluation of the usefulness of the geophysical techniques in all parts of the district.

Track in underground bituminous coal mines was investigated, and technology was taken from other industries in order to obtain information on conditions that impair the safety and efficiency of the track and to develop guidelines and useful information on the construction, inspection and maintenance of mine track. Volume 1 contains information on the investigations, observed track conditions, useful technology from railroads and other industries, derivations of track condition descriptors and recommended limits, conclusions, and recommendations. Volume 2, Guidelines, contains recommended standards and practices for mine track. It includes the relation of track conditions to safe speeds; descriptions and limits for measurable track features such as gage; descriptions of conditions for track components that are normally not measurable, such as subbase soils; construction requirements and techniques, inspection requirements and methods; and methods for managing and performing track maintenance work. As a research product, it does not repeat the summary or derivations. Volume 3, Inspection Handbook, summarizes recommended standards and procedures from Volume 2 and provides related information for' ready reference by inspectors in the mines. The production of bituminous coal by stripping methods has become an important factor in some areas, especially in the Central and South Central States. In the latter, production at strip mines exceeds that at deep mines. Table 1 shows the tonnage produced at strip mines and the percentage of the total production for 1924 to 1935, inclusive, for the States in which the mines described in this circular are situated.4/ Following are references to earlier Bureau of Mines publications on strip mining of bituminous coal: Cash, F. As part of ongoing research to improve mine safety, the Bureau of Mines conducted research on the corrosion of friction rock stabilizer steels in five Missouri lead and iron mine waters. Electrochemical corrosion tests, including evaluation of pitting tendency, were performed on two types of high-strength, low-alloy (HSLA) steels and galvanized steel in four Missouri lead mine waters and one Missouri iron mine water. The tests were conducted at in-mine water temperatures in both air-saturated and deaerated waters. Static, weight-loss corrosion tests were also conducted on HSLA steel specimens in the five Missouri mine waters for 2,900-h duration at average in-mine water temperatures and air-dissolved oxygen contents of 6 to 7 ppm. Corrosion rates determined by the weight-loss tests were roughly comparable with rates determined electrochemically in deaerated waters containing 0.3 to 0.5 ppm dissolved oxygen content. Passivation of specimen (nongalvanized) surfaces in air-saturated waters resulted in very low electrochemically deter- mined corrosion rates. Pitting-tendency was generally higher for both HSLA steels in air-saturated waters than in deaerated waters. Galvanized steel generally exhibited higher tendency to pitting in the deaerated waters than in the aerated mine waters.

"INTRODUCTION Technically speaking, bauxite is not a definite mineral but a mixture of several minerals belonging to a group of partly consolidated material known as laterite, which have been formed by surface weathering of rocks.The term bauxite is applied to the ore of aluminum, although a substantial amount is used for other purposes, such as a base in certain chemical industries and in the manufacture of artificial abrasives, refractories, and certain cements. Although bauxite has not been classed as strategic it now appears that the domestic supply may be insufficient for expanded defense requirements.Until recently, domestic production of metallic aluminum has been ample to meet requirements, but estimates of pyramiding future needs of the defense program have caused serious attention to be directed to the self-sufficiency of this country, both as to the supply of the raw material, bauxite, and the metallurgical capacity available to convert the ore to metallic aluminum.At the request of the Secretary of the interior, representatives of the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey recently investigated domestic resources of bauxite.A preliminary study of published literature and a field investigation disclosed that"

"INTRODUCTION Recovery of core specimens from subsurface formations and their subsequent analysis are important aids in efficient development and operation of oil and gas fields. Gore specimens first were obtained mainly for the geologic information they revealed; now they are analyzed to determine many of the physical characteristics and conditions of the subsurface formations as well. Cores recovered from the producing formations may be analyzed for porosity, permeability, oil content, ""connate"" water content, and other physical and chemical properties of the formation, all to the end of furnishing enough data for making reliable estimates of the quantity and avail¬ability of oil and as within a reservoir and in devising efficient means for their withdrawal.Examination of bottom-hole samples of oil gives valuable information concerning the amount of gas in solution in the oil within the reservoir and the resultant shrinkage of the oil when the gas is released. Producing characteristics of reservoirs nay be determined by means of subsurface pressure and temperature gages and measurements male at the wellhead; however, unless reliable core analyses are available, these data have only limited use in any quantitative study of reserves. In such a study the quantity of oil, gas, and water contained in a unit volume of the reservoir formation is extremely important. Although reliable methods of analyzing cores have been developed and the data thus obtained are valuable, their applications become more limited or reservoirs at higher temperatures and pressures are discovered. This condition results almost entirely from the fact that in recovering a core from a formation of high pressure and temperature by present methods a large part of the fluid content of the core is lost or contaminated to an unknown extent. For a number of years most petroleum engineers have held that if this loss and contamination of the fluid content of a core were eliminated, the value of core analyses would be increased greatly."

The Bureau of Mines experimentally burned Pittsburgh Seam coal and other combustible materials found in mines in order to obtain a better knowledge of their emission products. These experiments were conducted in the Bureau's intermediate-scale fire tunnel, which simulates environ-mental conditions in underground mines. Smoke characteristics, gas concentrations, mass loss, and ventilation were measured. From these values, heat-release rates, particle sizes, obscuration rates, combustion yields, and production constants were calculated. This information was sought as part of a comprehensive study of combustible materials that will ultimately advance the design of more efficient fire detection and suppression systems. The coal combustion measurements presented in this report, together with previous analyses of wood and transformer fluid fires form a data base by which future studies of other mine combustibles can be compared.

ALMOST all of the coal used for metallurgical purposes west of the Continental Divide is ruined from the Lower Sunnyside bed in Carbon County, Utah. Coke produced from Lower Sunnyside coal and used in western steel plants is weaker structurally than coke used elsewhere in this country. For this reason, western coal operators and steel manufacturers are anxious to develop new areas of coking coal of better quality than the coal produced from the Sunnyside bed. Early in the war, the Bureau of Mines undertook an intensive investigation of western coals to (a) develop additional reserves of coking coal to supplement proved reserves in the Sunnyside bed and (b) develop, if possible, reserves of coal with coking qualities superior to Lower Sunnyside coal. Results of investigations in the Kemmerer district, Wyoming,9 and in the Minnesota Creek area, Gunnison County, Colo.,10 have been published.

In this report, the application of the Open Pit Materials Handling Simulator (OPMHS) to a mine located in Ohio using a large stripping dragline, and truck and front-end loader (FEL) is described. The specific objective of the study is to demonstrate the application of the simulator to mine planning and coal production. On the basis of the simulations, it was concluded that the production from the haulback operation should be increased to accommodate improvements in both the stripping dragline's availability and mean cycle time. Several alternatives were studied for the best use of equipment if the present operating parameters could not be improved upon. No economic analysis of these proposals were made.

Significant improvements in surface conditions or mechanical properties of steels have been attributed by several investigators to ladle additions of small quantities of rare-earth metals or their oxides. To investigate systematically these effects in wrought and in cast plain carbon and alloy mechanical steels containing approximately 0.35 percent carbon, heats of four representative compositions were melted by the Bureau of Mines in a 4-ton open-hearth furnace. Each heat was cast into three sets of ingots to exemplify respectively, treatments with (1) rare-earth metals, (2) rare-earth metal oxides, and (3) an untreated set as a control. The development of melting, casting and rolling practices is described and discussed. Lance injection of oxygen shortly after melt raised the temperature of the metal immediately as much as 500° F., principally because mechanical agitation exposed the high-carbon metal to the flame and furnace root. An exceptional degree of superheat in the metal at the termination of the refining period was attributed to oxygen injection during the refining period. Bath temperatures higher than industrial practice were permitted by the all-basic furnace lining. Rates of carbon elimination as high as 0.036 percent carbon per minute were achieved by oxygen injections.

The Magruder and Chambers copper deposits in the Little River gold district, on the border line of Lincoln and Wilkes Counties, Georgia, have been known for a number of years (fig. 1). The Magruder deposit was first opened as a gold mine but has produced mostly copper and load. Records show that about 50 cars of concentrates were shipped from this property. No record of any production at the Chambers deposit is available. The Bureau of Mines, in its program of investigation of strategic minerals deposits, diamond drilled 10 holes, totaling 3,784 feet, on the two properties between December 3, 1948, and June 23, 1949. Eighty-eight core samples were analyzed, and the analyses and drill-hole data are presented in this report.

Oxygen breathing apparatus for use in mines was introduced to the United States in 1907. Despite their intended purpose of safeguarding lives, the apparatus led to the deaths of many men because of inherent or developed defects in the equipment, lack of training,, physical shortcomings of wearers, and improper procedures. The Bureau of Mines pioneered in research and training to curb logs of life among users of such apparatus and promoted development of safer equipment and procedures. As a consequence, deaths have been far less frequent. In 1944 the Bureau issued Information Circular 7279, Loss of Life Among Wearers of Oxygen Breathing Apparatus. That publication listed the case histories of 26 deaths that had occurred since the introduction of such equipment to American mining. The author, the late G. W. Grove,3/ asserted that further loss of life could be avoided if good equipment were used, teams were properly trained, and the basic principles of safe procedure were followed. This publication is a sequel to I.C. 7279 and contains information on eight deaths among wearers of oxygen breathing apparatus that were overlooked in the original compilation. It also describes the single death that occurred since I.C. 7279 was published.
