"The probability of developing coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) varies among miners in different geographic areas, coal seams, and jobs. Many studies have revealed the correlation between mineral content and the frequency and severity of CWP development still remains controversial. Furthermore, the mineral content and its variability in different areas is unknown.Since mineral content is expected to vary from location to location within a mine, between mines, between coal seams, and over time, this information will be valuable in understanding the variations in CWP incidence, as well as in establishing the appropriate kinds of dust to use in toxicological research programs studying CWP.Size-selective airborne dust samples were collected using 4-stage cassette impactors at 9 different locations in each of five coal seams. These coal seams were the Upper Freeport, Pittsburgh, Kittaning, Coal Burg, and Pocahontas. Mineralogical analyses were done by a x-ray powder diffraction photographic technique.Common minerals found in coal mine dust were illite, calcite, kaolinite, quartz, siderite, dolomite, gypsum, anhydrite, and pyrite. The distribution of minerals in interand intra location samples will be reported. Early results on the mineral content show wide variations between locations.in a mine and between coal seams, and small, but significant, variations between particle sizes.INTRODUCTIONIn spite of its long history of incidence, and the large amount of research conducted on it, coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) is still prevalent among coal miners and needs further research to develop effective preventive and remedial measures. Although the dose-response relationship between simple CWP and coal mine dust has been established (1), the causal agent(s) and the mechanism(s) involved in the progression of simple to complicated CWP are not yet defined. Many plausible hypotheses have been made to explain the mechanisms involved in the disease progression however none of them is satisfactory. In addition, the source of variation in occurrence of CWP among miners in different geographic areas (2), rank of coal seam (3,4), and job (5) remain unsolved."

This report describes the carbonizing properties of the principal coal beds of McDowell County, W. Va. Coals from 14 coal beds were selected for study: Upper Cedar Grove, Middle Cedar Grove, Lower Cedar Grove, Eagle, Douglas, Iaeger, Sewell, Welch, Beckley, Fire Creek and Pocahontas Nos. 3, 4, 5, and 9. Selection was based upon estimated minable reserves. McDowell County coals rank either as high-volatile A, medium-volatile, or low-volatile bituminous coal, and this variation in rank is reflected in the wide diversity of the carbonization properties of the coals. All coals tested were either satisfactory as mined or could be upgraded to meet present chemical standards for metallurgical coke; the coals produced strong coke, as determined by ASTM shatter and tumbler tests.

The Bureau of Mines produced building brick of good quality in an investigation designed to explore the possible utilization of high-glass fractions of municipal incinerator residues in the manufacture of building products. Common clays, lime, and sodium silicate were used as binders for the nonplastic residues Test bricks were formed by dry-pressing, soft-mud molding, and stiff-mud extrusion. A run of standard-size face brick dry-pressed and fired in the West Virginia University Coal Research Bureau pilot plant demonstrated that SW-grade glass-clay face brick can be produced on a commercial scale without difficulty. A cost evaluation made for production of the brick showed an estimated cost of $42.13 per thousand bricks for a shuttle kiln plant and $28.70 per thousand for a tunnel kiln plant.

1. The Pittsburgh is the most important bed in Washington County from the standpoint of present production and recoverable reserves. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 4,181 million short tons as of January 1, 1954. Of this total, 4,132 million short tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in some beds were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

With a growing concern over mine fires, prevention and suppression are hot topics. NIOSH researchers Michael Trevits, Alex Smith and Edward Thimons discuss their research in the area. The leading causes of US mine fires include flame cutting and, welding operations, frictional heating and ignitions, electrical shorts, mobile equipment malfunctions and spontaneous combustion. From 1990 through 2007, there were 1601 reportable fires that occurred in the US mining industry -an average of 89 fires per year. The fact that mine fires are occurring with alarming regularity reinforces the importance of recognizing and eliminating the potential hazards. These statistics also show the need for improved control and suppression technology to ensure worker health and safety if a mine fire does occur.

Because of the' situation in Europe during the summer of 1939, with the possibility of war and consequent curtailment or loss of supplies of tin to the United States, the Bureau of Mines undertook an investigation of domestic tin resources. This was permitted by the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939, which authorized investigation of possible domestic resources of strategic minerals necessary in a national emergency. The minerals selected were in short supply, and the United States depended almost entirely on imports to meet normal requirements. The Black Hills of South Dakota were selected for investigation as one possible source of tin because of the occurrence of the mineral there has been known since 1876, although production had never been important. The Tinton area, in the northern part of the Hills, had received the most attention and contained some minor indicated and inferred tin deposits.

The smelting of brass and bronze generates a dust composed primarily of zinc oxide, with lesser amounts of other metal oxides, such as copper, lead, and tin. The small quantity of this waste generated by individual smelters and the relatively low unit value of the contained metals, suggests the desirability of reclaiming the metals onsite or at some nearby point. The Bureau of Mines has developed a process that fits these requirements. The technique consists of (1) dissolving zinc and copper from the dust with sulfuric acid, (2) recovery of copper by cementation, (3) recovery of zinc as zinc sulfate crystals, and (4) recovery of lead and tin as a salable residue. Alternatively, zinc may be recovered by electrodeposition. Free acid is recycled and no major pollution problems are generated by the process.

This report presents the results of the Bureau of Mines' twenty-first semiannual survey of motor gasoline marketed in the United States. The 12 cities in which samples were collected have teen chosen as representative of the more important marketing territories, as it is obviously impractical to obtain a sample of every gasoline sold in the entire country. The survey reveals that the motor gasoline which is being marketed in the United States this winter is decidedly more volatile than that sold a year ago. Samples from all cities show a decided improvement in volatility except those from Laramie, Wyo., which show a small decrease in volatility.

The various applications of beryllium and its compounds in atomic - energy technology and a growing recognition of possible increased utilization of the metal in the aircraft and space - missile fields have resulted in increased interest in domestic and world reserves of beryllium . Unfortunately, little dependable data on beryllium resources and reserves are available , as past consumption of the element has been small and only limited prospecting and exploration work has been done . The scarcity of resource information is attributed partly to the difficulty of recognizing beryllium minerals in the field . These minerals frequently do not have distinctive characteristics of specific gravity, color , or other physical properties , that enable ready identification by the average prospector . This is particularly true of fine - grained minerals . As a result , a simple field test for identifying beryllium- bearing rock is needed . Recognizing this , technologists of the Federal Bureau of Mines investigated several of the proposed qualitative chemical tests for beryllium . This report describes various modifications of one of these methods to make it more suitable for use in the field . In the modified method , duplicate samples are fluxed -- one with potassium bifluoride and one with potassium bisulfate -- followed by dissolution of salts in water , conversion of the solution to an alkaline condition, addition of morin , and examination of the solution for fluorescence under short -wave ultraviolet light . This method provides a fast , dependable field test for beryllium minerals containing as little as 0.2 percent beryl or its equivalent . The test involves no radiation hazards , and it can be performed by persons having no technical training ; therefore , it should be useful to prospectors in discovering beryllium mineralization .

Although overall worker productivity for U.S. underground coal mines is available, productivity by mining method and seam thickness is not. Mining technology has gone through dramatic changes in the past decade, and the industry has experienced a lack of accurate productivity Figures addressing these changes. This information is of great interest in planning for future mining systems as thick and shallow coal seams currently being mined are depleted and exploitation of thinner, deeper, and better quality seams is considered to partially meet the requirements of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments. In a cooperative program, the U.S. Bureau of Mines obtained raw mine level production and related data from U.S. Energy Information Administration for 1989 and 1990 and performed the needed statistical analysis. Base criteria, parameters, and salient results of the mine productivity analysis are presented in this report.

"The interaction of amorphous silica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O,, C2H,OH, C,H,NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy, It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction of surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C,H,NO > C2H2OH > H2O.The use of IR spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature,"" For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1. Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-6 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity,7-9 catalysis,10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated-have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8N0), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by IR spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples17 have used transmission IR spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties, In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18,19 Moreover, according to a recent paper,20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry, In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H5OH, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface IR modes, Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents, Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16,17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification, Details of this work are given below,The Cab-O-Sil samples of silica used here were obtained from the Cabot Corporation of Tuscola, IL, In our earlier studies,14,20 we have shown these particles to be amorphous and about 0.05 am in size, For coverage of these particles with H20 and C2H50H, the following procedure was employed. "INTRODUCTION The purpose of this circular is to correlate the information obtained during personal investigations at the sites of four rock tunnels in the process of construction and information obtained from the records and personal views of the constructors of two other tunnels that were not visited during the, excavation phase of construction and to present this information for the benefit of those who contemplate future construction of rock tunnels.Modern mechanized coal mining requires better, safer, properly alined haulageways and beltways; consequently, better understanding of tunneling methods by coal-mining men will be necessary. The possibility of future high-speed haulage systems utilizing rock tunnels in the more solid rock strata above or below the coal beds must not be discounted. In the past, tunnels have been driven for use in draining and unwatering inundated coal mines. At present, the need for such tunnels is very evident in some parts of the coal-mining regions, notably in the Pennsylvania anthracite fields, and studies along these lines are in progress. The average coal-mining man has little time or opportunity to visit tunnels while they are being exca-vated; therefore, it is hoped that this information will assist him in constructing tunnels safely if he is required to do so in the future.The tunnels described herein differ in size, shape, usage, and, in many instances, in their geological aspects. Full-face, heading and bench, and pilot-tunnel, and enlargement methods of excavation were utilized.The roof-support methods show diverse designs and materials of construction to suit each purpose and condition. The superiority of steel roof support over wood is demonstrated beyond doubt and is shown clearly in the photographs included in this circular.The illustrations (photographs taken by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the U. S. Corps of Engineers, and others) show many of the necessary steps taken during the excavation and the erection of roof support in tunnels under construction."

This paper, covering Chaffee, Fremont, Gunnison, Lake, Larimer, Park, and Summit Counties, Colo., is the second of a series reporting on the tungsten potential of the Colorado region. The assembled information was obtained by examination of some properties, personal contacts with owners, and access to unpublished reports by other engineers. The tungsten-bearing areas of the 7 counties cover approximately 400 square miles and are in 10 distinct areas, which vary in size (fig. 1) from 1 square mile up to 290 square miles. The tungsten mineral wolframite was discovered by a man named Hackay near Dale on the Florence & Cripple Creek Railroad in the early 1900's, and wolframite and hubnerite were noted at Climax and the adjacent areas in Lake and Summit Counties at an early date, but no records of shipment from any of the areas are available before World War II. It is not known when scheelite was first discovered, but it was recognized in the Stockton mine during World War I. In the counties listed 64 properties are known to contain tungsten; of these, 18 have had some commercial output, although only 3 of them produced in 1953. The total production through 1953 is estimated at 115,000 short-ton units of tungsten trioxide. In 1953 by far the major portion came from the Climax mine.

"A three-year project focusing on the depth profiling of respirable coal mine dust particles using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray analysis resulted in the development of statistically classified particle-behavior models. The models depict the changing silicon fraction for particles at 5-, 7-, 9-, and 11-keV accelerating voltages, thereby giving a clear indication of the nature of various types of mineral particles. This paper focuses on the results for respirable quartz particles sampled from five underground coal mines across the US. Through statistical analysis of results the relationship between the fraction of surface available quartz in respirable dust samples and coal rank is established for three Pennsylvania coal seams. IntroductionThis is the last in a series of papers detailing the results of SEM/EDX-based analyses of respirable coal mine dust particles collected from field sampling. Previous papers have detailed preliminary results and the statistical validity of the methodology (Grayson, Andre, and Simonyi, 1990; Grayson, 1991). This paper presents the final results of the analysis of respirable dusts from five coal seams with a range of coal rank:• Lykens Valley seam (anthracite), eastern Pennsylvania• Brookville (A) seam (mid-vol bituminous), central Pennsylvania• Pittsburgh seam (high-vol B bituminous), western Pennsylvania• No. 6 seam (high-vol C bituminous), Illinois• Wadge seam (sub-bituminous A), ColoradoSEM/EDX-based techniques were applied to try to clarify the role of quartz as an etiologic agent in coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP). It was hypothesized that previous studies were hampered by the restrictions of bulk analysis techniques and that particle-level analyses were needed to answer a number of questions concerning the role of quartz in CWP and its progression.Since 1985, a large number of the respirable dust samples submitted to MSHA are analyzed for free silica (Tomb, Parobeck, and Gero, 1986). Our reasearch shows that conventional bulk analysis techniques may not give a true indication of the biologically available, or active, quartz in mine dusts. Analytical evidence indicates that respirable dust samples may contain many quartz particles that are occluded, or coated, resulting in a bulk analysis for ""free silica"" that may not be indicative of the biologically available quartz surface."

"The pressures produced by dust explosions are frequently so great and are developed so rapidly that widespread destruction of manufacturing equipment and buildings results. Experimental data on maximum pressures and rates of pressure rise produced in a closed vessel by numerous metal powders and by dusts used in the plastics industry were published in two previous Bureau of Mines papers.4/5/One means for reducing structural damage is provision in the enclosing walls and/or roof of rapidly opening explosion-relieving devices or relief vents through which the pressure of an incipient dust explosion can be quickly dissipated. The vents can be simply unrestricted or free openings: hinged or pivoted sash which swing outward at a predetermined internal pressure; fixed sash, with light wall anchorages; scored glass panes; light wall panels; monitors or skylights; poppet-type vent closures; paper, metal foil, or other diaphragms that burst at low pressures; pull-out diaphragms, or other similar arrangements.The use of pressure-relief vents is recommended in the dust-explosion codes of the rational Fire Protection Association,6/ and recently a special committee on explosion venting has been organized. However, technical data on which the design and distribution of relief vents can be based are meager. An experimental study on venting grain-dust and cornstarch explosions was made by the Bureau of Chemistry and Soils, United States Department of Agriculture.7/ Tests on cork fines, cinnamon, starch, barley dust, and a phenolic plastic were made in a laboratory-scale (0.1-cubic-foot) apparatus by the engineering department of the Factory Insurance Association.8/ A study on the venting of explosions of acetone-air mixtures was made by the Bureau of Mines.9/The object of the present investigation is to extend the limited knowledge on the effectiveness of pressure-relief vents of different types, shapes, and sizes. The aim is to determine the venting requirements in equipment and structures of various dimensions and shapes for dusts of widely different explosive properties. On the basis of such accumulated information, together with theoretical considerations, it is hoped that ultimately it will be possible to recommend correct venting for most operations in which a dust-explosion hazard exists."

The work-principle method was developed for theoretically resolving toxic fumes from non-ideal charge formulations. The whole description of a wanted process refers to macroscopic changes resulting from removing and imposing constraints that work one at a time to chronologically render trajectory terminal (key) states. The trajectory resolution utilizes a thermodynamic quasi-potential or negative work function, and numeric results require some appropriate standard thermodynamic (equilibrium) reaction code TDRC. The underlying method is unable to restrict reactions, tailor the work output or resolve states within the trajectory transitions, so the trajectory terminology is used somewhat figuratively. The work-principle model has the working fluid (reaction material) interacting with a tremendous reservoir (chamber air and walls), while forecasting the work performed upon a mechanical agent. Within the underground test chamber, the widening fume zone undergoes a decline in temperature, a reduction in reaction rates, resulting in out-of- equilibrium circumstances at the Q*-point, representing the measurement state. Rather than coping with the hard issues of non-equilibrium, the toxic fumes are resolved numerically for the Z-point, rendered by a zero-net- interaction energy constraint. Though other techniques require complex equation-of-state EOS for the whole trajectory, the work-principle formulation eludes the issue, requiring an EOS that works just for the terminal-state. Under the circumstances, the Z-state is reconcilable with the ideal-gas domain, and relevant TDRC results yield the restricted state in a numerical way for different charge formulations. The work principle makes it hard to remedy or to tamper with the resulting Z-point fumes: non-macroscopic trajectory readjustment is forsaken, terminal states are results rather than stipulations, and resetting the EOS formula constants would be ineffectual. Though the non-equilibrium portion remains unresolved, it is noteworthy that the work principle rigidly fixes the Z-state, thereby reducing the uncertainty for rendering reaction-rate models characterizing the non-equilibrium Z-Q* transition. Though more refinements are needed, some Z-point fume results are included to illustrate the threshold (minimum) resolving capacity of the work- principle formulation.

No mines are active in the Hunter Mountain Wilderness Study Area (WSA), and no mineral resources have been identified in the WSA. However, the Monarch Mine has low potential for silver, copper, tungsten, and gold resources in quartz veins; the Shirley Ann Group and Sal Group have moderate and low potential, respectively, for silver, lead, and copper resources in skarn; claims overlying the Eureka Quartzite have low potential for silica resources; and the Tourmaline N1-4 Prospect has low potential for tourmaline resources in quartz monzonite. Copper, lead, silver, tungsten, molybdenum, wollastonite and garnet occur in skarn zones between monzonitic and carbonate units. Silver, tungsten, and copper also occur in quartz veins within monzonite. Known metallic mineral deposits are small, erratic and discontinuous. The J. 0. Mine, adjacent to the northeast corner of the WSA, may contain as much as 26 million tons of subeconomic wollastonite resources. The crest of an open pit to produce that resource would extend into the WSA. No information exists on geothermal potential because no exploration has been done in the area. No occurrences of energy minerals are known within the WSA.

The Bureau of Mines studied a pulsation damping device designed to smooth pulsating flow in personal respirable dust samplers. The effect on the pulsation dampener efficiency of six parameters was investigated, as follows: Volume, diaphragm elasticity, diaphragm area, center orifice area, inlet-outlet orifice area, and geometry (LID ratio). The results indicate that volume pre-dominates in determining snubber efficiency, while the other parameters become important at small volumes. Geometry has no effect on snubber efficiency. Criteria for an efficient pulsation dampener construction were obtained.

This Bureau of Mines report presents results from experimental studies on wood crib fires in an intermediate-scale fire tunnel. Gas concentrations, smoke particle characteristics, heat release rates, and ventilation rates were determined. These measurements form a data base for wood, which can be used with previous analyses for coal and future studies of other mine combustibles, to comprehend the potential hazards of these materials in underground mine fires. A knowledge of the combustion products emitted from these materials will benefit fire detection and control. Results show the changes in burning rate and heat release rate produced by different crib configurations and ventilation rates. Also included are the effects that the burning rate has on smoke characteristics and gas production.
