This report on the properties of aviation gasolines and aviation jet fuels produced in the United States during 1954 was made under a co-operative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. Analytical data are presented for 101 samples of aviation gasoline. Data also are given for 30 samples of aviation jet fuel. The analyses were made on samples typical of the manufacturers I 1954 production in their laboratories and the results submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. The products of 19 manufacturers of aviation gasolines and of 15 producers of aviation jet fuels are represented.

This paper describing the practice at the tungsten concentrator of the Nevada-Massachusetts Co., Inc., at Mill City, Nev., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on milling practices, methods, and costs in the United States. The ore, which contains about 1.10 per cent of scheelite (CaW04), is concentrated on tables and by means of a magnetic separator and roasters. A product containing 70.43 tungsten trioxide is shipped. The plant was designed for a capacity of 100 tons per 24 hours, but at present 142 tons of ore are milled per day. The author acknowledges the assistance of William O. Vanderburg, associate mining engineer, U. S. Bureau of Mines, in preparing this paper.

This paper, which describes the milling practice at the Midvale concentrator, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines. The Midvale concentrator, a custom lead-zinc selective flotation plant, is in Salt Lake County, Utah, on a flat site several hundred yards east of the Jordan River and about 200 yards south of the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad tracks leading to Bingham Canyon. The site is at an elevation of about 50 feet above the river, the highest available location, thus allowing maximum storage of tailings.

In 2004, data obtained from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) indicated a total of 891 underground (6.2%) and 13,587 surface (93.8%) mining operations.

This report is a compilation of all information obtained in accordance with the requirements of contracts SO122076 and H0232056. A series of eight coal mines were visited to determine their communications usage and requirements. Presently available equipment was surveyed and evaluated to determine its applicability to the needs of the mines. Because of their noncombustibility, silicate and magnesium oxycements are desirable for sealing shale in underground coal mines. In this Bureau of Mines investigation, cement samples were cured and tested (nonstandard tests) for submersion to note resistance to dissolution (breaking into parts), which is an important property for a coating. Nonappreciable dissolution during 1 week of submersion was set for passing the test. Over half of the coatings passed the test.

1. Reserve estimates have been made for eight coal beds in Monongalia County, W. Va., but only the Pittsburgh, Sewickley, and Upper Freeport beds are important at this time. The Pittsburgh, Sewickley, Waynesburg, and Upper Freeport beds contain the largest recoverable reserves. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 3,526 million tons as of January 1, 1954. Of this total, 3,294 mil-lion tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed except the Pittsburgh were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

Methylene chloride , dichloromethane CH2C12 , a low - boiling and highly volatile organic chlorinated compound, is used extensively as a refrigerant in air conditioning installations , as an intermediate in organic synthesis , and as a solvent for cellulose acetate and other materials . As its vapors are not inflammable in air at ordinary temperatures , it can be used to advantage where it would be highly dangerous to use ordinarily inflammable solvents . The question has been raised as to its inflammable range in pure oxygen and in air enriched with oxygen . To find the answer to this question, tests were carried out with various mixtures of methylene chloride , oxygen, and nitrogen mixtures . It was found that methylene chloride has wide limits of inflammability in pure oxygen . Additional tests were then made to establish the complete range of inflammability of these gases . The methylene chloride employed in the tests was cbtained from the Eastman Kodak Co. It had a reported boiling range of 40.5 ° to 42.0 ° C. and a density of 1.322 at 20 ° C.

The investigation to evaluate the reserves of coking coal is being made by the Bureau of Mines in three parts: (1) To estimate known measured and indicated recoverable reserves of all coking coal; (2) to upgrade marginal coals through effective preparation; and (3) to study carbonizing properties of coals and coal blends not now widely used for metallurgical coke making. This is the ninth of a series of reports giving results of studies by counties under part (1) of the investigation. (See Appendix.) This report covers Raleigh County, W. Va., which comprises parts of Bald Knob, Eccles, Beckley, Meadow Creek, Mullens, Flattop, and Big Bend quadrangles. (See fig. 1.) A base map for each bed in each quadrangle was made to the scale 1 inch equals 1,200 feet. Maps of mines, location of drill holes, bed and total coal thickness, and outcrop of the bed were plotted on the maps. With all available data plotted, isopach lines were drawn to limit areas of known unmined reserves in beds 0 to 14 inches thick, 14 to 28 inches thick, 28 to 42 inches thick, and over 42 inches thick. These areas of coal reserves also were divided into measured" and "indicated" categories. All areas in each thickness range and in each category, mined-out areas. areas excluded from the estimate but which may contain reserves based only on geologic inference, and areas outside of the outcrop were measured by planimeter on the base maps, Estimates of total reserves 14 inches and more thick and maps for individual beds were prepared from these data.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated creep and other properties of extruded Zn-30 pct-AI alloys containing 0 to 0.7 pct Mg. The alloys were extruded both above and below the Zn-Al eutectoid temperature of 275° C. Creep behavior is defined for the alloys as extruded and after various heat treatments. Tensile properties, hardness, thermal expansivity, impact resistance, and microstructures are given. The alloys, either with or without magnesium, required substantially less pressure for extrusion near 275° C than at higher or lower temperatures. The alloys containing magnesium exhibited significantly greater hardness, tensile strength, and creep resistance, but much lower ductility than the 2n-30 pct Al alloy. The properties were very sensitive to the processing conditions.

An investigation of the hazard of spillage of liquefied natural gas (LNG) onto water is described. About 2,000 gallons of LNG were consumed in various tests. The initial vaporization rate of LNG following spillage was found to be 0.037 lb/ft2 sec; when the spill was confined, this vaporization rate was moderated after about 20 seconds by the growth of an ice layer on the water surface; when the spill was unconfined, a coherent ice floe was not observed and the vaporization rate was essentially time independent. The maximum diameter (in feet) of the spreading LNG pool was found to be given by 6.25 Wo 1/3, where Wo is the weight of LNG in pounds, Downwind of a natural gas source, time-averaged methane concentrations were given in good approximation by standard air pollution equations. However, peak concentrations were as much as twentyfold higher than average, adding an additional factor to the assessment of hazard. The effect of layering by the cold vaporized natural gas was similar to the effect of a temperature inversion on normal gases in the atmosphere. Small-scale explosions were observed on pouring LNG onto a water surface; no single explanation seems pertinent to all of the incidents observed.

This report describes preliminary studies by the Bureau of Mines to develop a procedure for extracting the fluorine from low-grade fluorspar ores in which the CaF2 particles are finely locked in the calcite matrix. A combination of flotation beneficiation and pyrohydrolysis is applied to recover and to liberate the fluorine. Flotation of a finely locked high-calcite fluorspar ore containing only 11.7 pct CaF2 recovered over 92 pct of the fluorspar at a grade of 51 to 52 pct CaF2. Pyrohydrolysis of the flotation concentrate liberated nearly 90 pct of the fluorine as aqueous HF. By this procedure over 80 pct of the fluorine contained in the original ore was extracted.

Considerable current interest is evident[l,2] in the use of transient electromagnetic methods for subsurface remote sensing. A transient method is discussed which uses a periodic video-type pulse containing a wide frequency range. A video pulse is used as an interrogating signal both for "target" identification and detection for relatively short depth (c 20 meters) applications in soil and soft rock media. If the medium is favorable, e.g., hard rock, greater depth applications appear to be feasible. The same procedures would be applicable for deep geological exploration but would require a substantial reduction in frequency and increase in target size. It should be noted that video pulse generators with 35 kv peak voltage and nanoseconds base widths are now within the state-of-the-art, thus significant power over broad spectral ranges is possible. In the design of a video pulse sounding system, 5 main problem areas can be identified; 1 ) selection of the pulse shape or spectral content of the video pulse, 2) design of a radiating structure which effectively couples such a pulse into the medium, 3) isolation of the radiating and receiving mechanisms, 4) realistically accounting for the dispersion and attentuation of the medium and the air-medium interface, and 5) interpretation or processing of the received signal waveform. Each of these problem areas will be discussed and illustrated with experimental and/or theoretical results. The Video Pulse Selection of the proper video pulse signal is dictated by 3 considerations, the maximum desired depth of penetration, the attenuation of the medium and the required resolution and size of the target. For a lossy medium, penetration and resolution are clearly at cross purposes and a compromise is necessary. The exact nature of the compromise is dictated by the application, but the spectrum of the video pulse should not contain any frequencies higher than the predicted cut-off, i.e., that frequency which is attenuated to the threshold level of the receiver. From October 1943 to March 1944, the Bureau of Mines conducted core drilling at the Victory fluorspar mine, Hardin County, Ill. to test the Fredonia limestone and the included sub-Rosiclare sandstone zone beneath the existing stopes. Twenty-one vertical holes were drilled to an average depth of 60 feet. Ore was penetrated in six holes. Since its discovery in 1927, the Victory mine has produced approximately 5 percent of the total fluorspar mined in the United states after that date. The ore discovered in the early mine development is now exhausted, except that contained in pillars drifting to the northeast has partly developed one substantial ore body, and company drilling has indicated another nearby. The increasing need for fluorite for war use in 1943 suggested the desirability of mining the pillars, provided it could be established that no ore beds existed below the stopes or in areas to which access would be obtained through the present workings. This work describes the work accomplished during the project and presents the data obtained.

The record of fatalities from mine explosions in the United States during the past 44 years has been the best in the history of the mining industry, despite the fact that the number of fatalities from this cause during the past fiscal year now is nearly double that of the previous year. During there 4 fiscal years, mine explosions have resulted in an average of 45.5 deaths per year, compared with an average of 153 deaths per year for the preceding 5 years; an average of 542 deaths per year for the 3 years 1907-1909, inclusive, and a yearly average of 265 deaths per year for the 20 years prior to 1929. Other types of mine accidents also have been reduced during this period, but not to the same degree or by as large a percentage as mine explosions. The fact that in this fiscal year ended June 30, 1937, electricity was responsible for 60 percent of the explosions and 85.5 percent of the fatalities resulting therefrom (see tables 3 and 4) is evidence that either mine operators are lax in providing proper electrical equipment or there is laxity in the upkeep and use of electricity in our mines and more particularly in our coal mines. Several large coal-producing States that in the Fast have had numerous disastrous explosions have been free from such disasters for continuous periods of as long as 8 years. The bituminous mines of Pennsylvania, one of the largest coal-producing States, give a good example of what can be done to prevent explosions. 'his State, with its large number of operating mines, many with very definite hazards from gas or dust or both, has had only two major explosions (resulting in 16 fatalities) during the past 7 years; this is a decidedly good record compared with any similar period in the past and when it is considered that during this period about 750,000,000 tons of coal have been produced. Other good records are: Tennessee, without a single fatality from explosions during the past 9 years; Alabama, with 6 fatalities during the past 7 years; Illinois, with no explosions during the past 4 years; and

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing clay mining and crushing methods and costs at various operations throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs might perhaps, in many instances, cause embarrassment to the individual operator as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this distinction in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulation shall ensue. The following report deals specifically with the methods employed by the Camp Brothers Company, Mogadore, Summit County, Ohio.

The United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Natural Gas Department of the American Gas Association, has been studying actively for the past-several years the flow of natural bas through high--pressure pipe lines.4 This report deals with that part of the study involving the design of pipe-line, systems consisting of lines laid parallel to each other. The lines are deferred to as the original line and the parallel line. The paralleling line may or may not extend the entire length of the original line; however, the parallel line is, connected at its two ends to the original line. As a result of the large expansion of the natural-gas industry almost all markets within economic distance from the developed gas fields have at least one pipe line supplying them with natural gas. Small increases in the consumers' demand for natural gas can be met usually by increasing operating pressures, but any marked increase in demand necessitates paralleling sections of the existing systems. A significant risk factor in assessing and modeling potential catastrophic slope movement in open-pit mines is the presence of argillic alteration in host rocks. High-resolution hyperspectral imagery operating in the visible to shortwave infrared can be a useful tool for identifying and mapping potentially dangerous argillic zones. We have conducted preliminary experiments with a new type of hyperspectral imager that employs an acousto-optic tunable filter, a variable retardation plate and a standard digital camera. The instrument we tested operates in the .5-1.0 micrometer range. A shortwave infrared instrument is planned, and mid-infrared instruments have been designed. An AOTF consists of an acoustic transducer that generates an acoustic wave that propagates through an attached crystalline substance. The wave sinusoidally modulates the refractive index of the crystal, selectively diffracting incident light according to its wavelength. The instrument also measures polarization signatures of reflecting surfaces as well as their spectral properties, opening up new areas of possible research. Images can be acquired and processed at 30 frames/second. The AOTF camera system offers numerous advantages to geologists. It can be used as an airborne imager or as a portable field device to image pit walls, outcrops, rock specimens or drill core. It can be adapted to image polished sections under a microscope, and it could be used in underground workings. Algorithms can produce processed images in real time (e.g., ratio images), and, because it is a camera system, aerial images can be orthorectified.

This paper, describing the milling practice at tine lead-zinc concentrator of the International Smelting Co., is one of a series of papers on milling methods being prepared by the United States Bureau of nines. The concentrator is operated as a unit of the International Smelting Co. and is located about 40 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, at Tooele, Utah. The Tooele Valley Railroad, operating between the plant and Warner, Utah, a distance of 6.5 miles, makes connection with both the Union Pacific and Denver & Rio Grande Railroads.

The Bureau of Mines determined coal-cutting forces and primary dust generation of four styles of radial gage bits as used on end rings of continuous mining machines. Direct comparisons for reference were made with two widely used conical plumb-bob types having 60' and 90' (nominal) included tip angles. The cutting forces for all of the gage bits were similar to those of the 60°-tip plumb-bob bit. All bits except the RAD-3 gage bit generated similar amounts of primary total dust at shallow cutting, but during deeper cutting, the amounts varied and the gage bits produced as much as 2-1/2 times the dust produced by the 60° bit. This seems atypical since past experience has always shown differences in dust generation at shallow cutting. The specific energy was more like that found previously with other bits, since the values were spread at shallow cutting but became nearly similar at deeper cuts. The 90° bit and the RAD-3 gage bit are not recommended for use except in extremely difficult cutting conditions where dust and forces are of secondary importance. The choice among the remaining four bits can be made on the basis of dust, energy, forces, or cost, as circumstances dictate.
