Data obtained by the Federal Bureau of Mines on the dust explosion hazard in air are presented for 220 samples of agricultural products. Information is given on ignition temperature of dust clouds and layers, minimum explosive concentration, minimum electrical energy for ignition, explosion pressure and rates of pressure rise, amount of inert dust required to prevent flame propagation, and, in a few instances, the permissible oxygen concentration in an atmosphere to prevent ignition by spark and by heated surface. The effects of particle size and source of sample on explosibility are shown. The relative ignition sensitivity, severity of explosion, and overall explosibility of the materials are characterized by empirical indexes. This report contains Ma obtained by the Bureau in laboratory studies on the explosion hazards of agricultural dusts. Recognition of the dangers will encourage adoption of adequate measures to prevent ignition and explosion during preparation, processing, and utilization of the materials. Agricultural products constitute one of the largest groups of materials used in America. Crude Minnesota taconite was charged in the Bureau of Mines experimental blast furnace so that smelting characteristics of such highly siliceous raw materials could be studied and smelting costs compared with those of a standard Mesabi ore. The Bureau recognized that the highly siliceous nature of the crude ore and its relatively low metallic content would be serious economic deterrents to commercial use of the raw taconite, but compensating factors would be low capital investment in production facilities, large tonnage available on short notice, high recoveries of iron, and low delivered cost. Crude taconite smelted readily in the experimental blast furnace. Coke consumption per ton of metallic product was very high, compared with the average established requirements for smelting normal grades of metalliferous raw materials. Slag rates were also inordinately high. Metal quality was erratic as to silicon, and sulfur contents were objectionably high.

New information on possible resource value of sea floor manganese nodule deposits in the eastern North Pacific has been obtained by study of records and collections of the 1972 Sea Scope Expedition. Nodule abundance (percent of sea floor covered) varies greatly, to judge from bottom photographs from 8 stations and data from other sources. All estimates considered reliable are plotted on a map of the region. Similar maps show the average content of Ni, Cu, Mn, and Co at 89 stations from which 3 or more nodules were analyzed. Variations in nodule metal content at each station are shown graphically in an appendix, where data on nodule sizes are also given. Results of new analyses of 420 nodules from 93 stations, for Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Co, and Zn, are listed in another appendix. Relatively high Ni+Cu content is restricted chiefly to four groups of stations in the equatorial region, where group averages are 1.86, 1.99, 2.47, and 2255 weight percent. These and a few other areas may warrant more exploration. It is hoped that this report will stimulate new interest in North Pacific nodule deposits and that the maps and quantitative data will aid future exploration.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the acid resistance of ceramic materials to identify construction materials for emerging technology in chemical and metallurgical processes. Eight commercial ceramic materials, including two red shale, two fireclay, a silica, a silicon carbide, a carbon, and a high-alumina brick, were evaluated. Samples were exposed to 40 wt pct HN03 at 70° and 90° C and 60 wt pct HN03 at 50°, 70°, and 90° C for time periods of 110 days. Statistically significant changes in cold crushing strength were generally small or not detected, except for a strength drop in the high-alumina brick, which decreased in strength when exposed to the chosen acid concentrations at 90° C. Vol-ume and weight changes were also measured. The leach rates of Al, Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Na, Si, and Ti were monitored. Increasing temperature or a decrease in the acid concentration resulted in an increased ion leach rate. Of the conditions tested, the most severe corrosion occurred at 90° C for a 40-wt-pct-HN03 solution. The silica brick had the best overall acid-resistant properties, followed by a red shale and a fire-clay brick. The carbon and silicon carbide bricks are not recommended for service.

The Federal Bureau of Mines has determined the distribution of forms of sulfur for several lignites and gasification chars and noted the changes induced by the gasification process . A method was adopted for quantitatively determining sulfide sulfur that was found to be present in the chars , although absent in the lignites . Changes in the behavior and distribution of sulfur forms were further investigated concerning the ashing of lignites and chars under standard conditions , as well as at various temperatures , and the determination of volatile matter applied to both chars and lignites . The authors concluded that the first and greatest change in the form of sulfur present in natural lignite , upon heat treatment , resulted from the reduction of pyritic and sulfate sulfur to sulfide . Organically - bound sulfur originally present is less reactive , but largely disappears on strong ignition . An appreciable part of the sulfur content of natural lignite is fixed in the char as sulfide and in the ash as water - soluble sulfate and will affect the summation of constituents , to a greater or lesser degree , in reporting the ultimate analysis of a lignite or char .

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed an acoustic test for determining if a rock salt sample is from a "normal" nongassy salt face or from a gassy face where an outburst has the potential to occur. The test is based on the observation that a salt sample taken near an outburst-prone zone produces an audible popping sound when it is dissolved in water. The sound is produced when pressurized gas that is trapped in salt samples is released. In the acoustic test, the sound is electronically measured, digitized, and transmitted to a microcomputer; the output is an average decibel value that classifies the sample as "normal" or "outburst." The acoustic test procedure and equipment are described, and raw test results and data analysis are shown. Results are also shown for several salt samples that were analyzed using a laser Raman microprobe.

Radioactivity, the property of radium that led to its isolation more than 30 years ago, is the characteristic that makes it of value in the treatment of disease. Tyler3 gives the following brief history of the investigation: The way to the discovery of radium was opened in 1895 by Rontgen, who found that the glow from a Crooke's tube contained penetrating rays, which .he called X rays. Prof. Henri Bequerel, while investigating the effect of various phosphor¬ escent substances, found that uranium salts produced photographic impressions even when enveloped with opaque substances. To Marie Sklovouski, a young Polish student, who later became Madame Curie, Professor Bacquerel delegated the task of learning how and why uranium possessed power to emit these peculiar rays, which he had proved to be electrical in character. Madam Curie, examining by electri¬ cal methods the radioactivity of a large number of minerals containing uranium and thorium, discovered that some specimens of pitchblende had about four times the activity of the metal uranium; that chalcolite, the crystallized phosphate of copper and uranium, was twice as active as uranium; that autunite, a phosphate of calcium and uranium, was quite as active as the same weight of pure uranium. In order to check these discoveries, she prepared chalcolite artificially, starting with pure products, but found that this artificial chalcolite had only the acti¬ vity represented by its composition, or, roughly, 40 per cent of the activity of uranium. This led to the conclusion that there was some element or substance in the residue from uranium minerals that possesses a high degree of activity. After an exhaustive chemical investigation of pitchblende from Joachimsthal, she found that this mineral contained not only uranium but also another radioactive sub¬ stance, to which she gave the name of polonium, in honor of her native land. Later in 1898, Monsieur and Madame Curie found still another element, which, when brought to a state of concentration, was several million times as active as uranium, and to this was given the name of radium. Debierne afterwards found a fifth radio¬ active substance, actinium; and in 1906 Boltwood isolated the metal ionium. Strict¬ ly pure radium chloride was first produced in 1902. The first radium was produced commercially from the uranium residues obtained from the mines of Joachimsthal, Bohemia. Tyler calls to attention that, as the ores were a government monopoly, search was begun at once for sources in other parts of the world. As a result, radium-containing ores have been found in about 10 countries.

Batch and continuous - circuit flotation , leaching , precipitation , and electrodeposition studies were made by the Bureau of Mines to determine optimum conditions for treatment of complex mercury - antimony sulfide and mercury- arsenic sulfide ores and concentrates . On the Red Devil ore sample over 95 percent of both the mercury and antimony sulfides were recovered in a flotation concentrate containing 35.6 percent mercury and 21.0 percent antimony . By selective flotation a mercury concentrate containing 71.0 percent mercury and 2.9 percent antimony was obtained with a mercury recovery of 90.4 percent . Leaching results show that , with 150 grams per liter of sodium sulfide and 50 grams per liter of sodium hydroxide , 95 to 99 percent of the mercury , antimony , and arsenic sulfides could be extracted from the concentrates treated . Sodium hydroxide reagent consumption was based on the sulfides generated in the dissolution of the sulfide minerals and on the method of metal recovery used . Selective leaching of the antimony and arsenic sulfides with potassium sulfide dissolved more than 95 percent of either of these two sulfides and 0.5 to 5 percent of the mercury sulfide present . Methods for recovering mercury and antimony from solution were electrodeposition of mercury followed by electrodeposition of antimony , aluminum precipitation of both mercury and antimony , or antimony precipitation of mercury followed by antimony electrodeposition . For the past three or four years attention has been attracted to the deposits of lead vanadate in the Goodsprings , Nevada , district . Some ore running as high as 9 per cent 205 has been produced , but most of it runs from 0.5 to 3 per cent . Only a little ore , and that of the richer sort , has been shipped , since the low- grade ore will not stend the cost of shipment and no concentration mill has been available . Preliminary experiments indicate that chemical treatment of the low- grade ore without concentration is not feasible . Its treatment therefore involves two distinct problems ; first , mechanical concentration ; and second , a smelting or chemical treatment to obtain the lead and vanadium in marketable form . Upon this basis the work has been conducted . The writer wishes to acknowledge the excellent work done by J. T. Norton and Virgil Miller on table concentration and by J. E. Conley , who suggested and did preliminary work on the direct smelting method . Many helpful suggestions were received from Dr. S. C. Lind and John Gross of the Bureau of Mines . In situ stope leaching is an innovative mining system that reduces the surface impacts of conventional underground mining. As in any leaching operation, stope leaching requires hydrologic site characterization and control of leaching solutions. Several tracer tests, using sodium chloride (NaCl) in various concentrations, were conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) in an underground experimental stope to simulate a leaching environment. The tests were conducted in fractured crystalline rock that was partially water-saturated. As tests progressed, the surrounding fractures became more saturated. A predominant flow direction away from the stope was found during testing. Testing procedures, results, and a remediation plan for in situ leaching based on field observations are presented in this report.

The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 established mandatory dust sampling of coal mines according to procedures prescribed in the Mandatory Health Standards, title 30, Code of Federal Regulations, part 70, published in the Federal Register on April 3, 1970. A laboratory was established in the Pittsburgh Field Health Group of the Bureau of Mines to process the coal mine dust samples collected by the mine operators. This paper describes the laboratory and presents the equipment and procedures used in processing these samples.

In 1989-90, the Bureau of Mines appraised selected high resource potential areas containing gold, rare-earth-element, or pegmatite deposits in or near the Black Hills National Forest. Available mineral resource data were used to construct mine and mill models and to compute discounted cash-flow rate-of-return analyses. Using this information, the economic feasibility of possible operations and probability (in the nonmathematical sense) of exploration and development within the next decade were assessed. High exploration and development probabilities are forecast for gold deposits around existing and permitted mine areas near Lead-Deadwood and west of Galena. The area east of Galena has low to moderate exploration and development probability; the Rochford area has low to high exploration probability and low to moderate development probability; the Keystone area has low to moderate exploration probability and low development probability; the Medicine Mountain area has moderate to high exploration and low to moderate development probabilities. Exploration probability in the Bear Lodge Mountains area is high for rare-earth elements and gold; development probability is low. Exploration probability for gold in the Mineral Hill area is low to moderate; development probability is low. The current level of activity associated with pegmatite mining in the Black Hills would probably not change significantly in the next decade; both exploration and development probabilities are low to moderate.

The solubility and the activity of aluminum chloride hexahydrate, A1C13?6H2O, in aqueous solutions were determined as a part of the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, research to improve mineral processing technology for recovering alumina from low-grade domestic resources. The solubility of A1C13 in pure water was found to be 31.09 and 31.77 wt-pct at 25° and 85° C, respectively, and decreased drastically to 10 and 0.1 wt-pct when the respective amounts of 20.3 and 37 wt-pct hydrochloric acid (HCI) were added in solution. The equilibrium constant for the solubility of hexahydrate, activities, and activity coefficients of A1C13 and H2O were calculated and compared with the results from the available methods of estimation. The results were shown to be useful in leaching nonbauxitic ores for extraction of alumina by changing the solubilities of component salts upon addition of HC1. Simultaneous solubilities of A1C13, FeC13, KC1, and NaC1 in solutions of HC1-H2O were also determined and their effects on the purity of A1C13?6H20 crystallized from mixed salt solutions are briefly discussed.

The oil yields of sections of Green River oil shale in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming are presented as part of a continuing project to determine oil-shale reserves in the United States. Oil-yield logs, based upon analyses obtained from 1945 through 1952, are presented to show the thickness and richness of 202 sections of Green River oil shale. The logs are based on analyses of approximately 20,500 samples, representing 179,000 feet of shale, which were made by the Bureau of Mines, and upon analyses, representing approximately 26,000 feet of shale, which were made by other agencies. The samples consisted of cores from a Bureau of Mines coring program in U. S. Naval Oil-Shale Reserve 1, Garfield County, Colo., and cores, drill cuttings, and channel samples provided by other agencies, chiefly oil companies. Most of the samples of oil shale from Utah and Wyoming were derived from oil-well drilling operations. As a result, the oil-shale sections were widely scattered and were not extensive or reliable enough to be representative of the significant deposits of Green River oil shale in these States. The oil-shale sections for Colorado, however, were more comprehensive, and a number of the sections were used in a previous report as a basis for estimating oil-shale reserves in Colorado. The present report does not give estimates of oil-shale reserves but is limited to presentation of oil-shale analyses that may be used for future reserve estimates. Other sections of Green River oil shale are being analyzed, and the results will be published in subsequent reports.

This is the first report published by the Bureau of Mines on washability characteristics of coal from beds in Tennessee. It is based principally upon screen-sizing and float-and-sink tests of raw coal from a bed on the Cumberland Plateau. Stripping operations were undertaken recently on this bed by the Cumberland Collieries, Inc., near Chalybeate,Van Buren County, Tenn. The bed has not been definitely correlated, but it may be an extension of the Sewanee bed, which has been mined extensively in the Tracy City district to the south-vest and at points near Dunlap and Pikeville to the southeast and east. It was spoken of by officials of the Cumberland Collieries as the Sewanee bed at the time of sampling for this study. In a letter dated October 16, 1948, W. D. Hardeman, geologist of the Department of Conservation, Nashville, Tenn., states: "The stripping operations of the Cumberland Collieries near the old postoffice at Chalybeate are, I am fairly certain, in the upper part of the Whitwell shale, which carries the Sewanee coal. This coal may be a stray seam, but it probably can be correlated with the Sewanee coal, which is mined farther east. "There are no detailed geologic maps or reports covering the area, and this opinion is based on what was observed in visiting the strip mines in that general vicinity." The laboratory work upon which this report is based was done at the Southern Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama and the Cumberland Collieries, Inc.

An electrochemical process was developed for the preparation of vanadium from vanadium carbide. Commercially available vanadium carbide (V2C) was used as the starting material. Vanadium was obtained by electrolysis of the V2C in a BaCl2-KCl-NaCI-VCl2 electrolyte at 670° C using a helium-atmosphere, molten-salt electrolytic cell. Vanadium products were recovered with purities high as 99.6 percent. Current efficiencies of 87 percent and vanadium recoveries of 84 percent were attained. The cathode products were amenable to electrorefining to high-purity vanadium of 99.96-percent purity.

The identified helium resources of the United States were estimated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines at 617 Bcf, as of December 31, 1992. This includes 285 Bef of demonstrated reserves, 85 Bcf of demonstrated marginal reserves, and 37 Bcf of demonstrated sub-economic resources. The identified resources also include 166 Bcf of helium in inferred reserves and inferred marginal reserves and 44 Bcf in inferred sub-economic resources. The identified helium resources contained on Federal lands are approximately 172 Bcf, including 32 Bcf in underground storage in the Cliffside Gasfield near Amarillo, TX. Undiscovered helium resources in the United States are estimated at a most likely volume of 104 Bef, with a maximum volume of 249 Bcf and a minimum volume of 41 Bef. Also reported are 51 Bcf of helium in nonconventional and low-helium-content natural gases. Extraction of helium in the United States occurs mostly from natural gases produced from the Hugoton gas area in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, and the Riley Ridge area in southwest Wyoming. Helium extracted from natural gas in the United States in 1992 was 3.3 Bcf. Some shortfalls in helium supply may occur in about 5 to 10 years.

The Bureau of Mines, through research and development contracts with the FMC Corp., has developed and tested two automatic fire sensing and suppression systems for large haulage vehicles. This work was undertaken to enhance driver safety, to lessen substantial property damage from fires on large trucks, and to increase the vehicle operator's productivity. One automatic truck fire protection system protects both the engine compartment and brake rid areas, while the second system is used in the engine compartment and fuel tank area. Both systems have redundant fire-sensing capabilities and manual override controls. Upon sensing flames and/or heat, the systems suppress the fire with pressurized, E-C class dry chemical. Both fire protection systems are flexible in design and can be modified for use on other mobile minim' equipment. Prototypes of both systems have been subjected to long-term, in-mine validation testing and actual Eire tests on 100-ton-capacity trucks at the Puma mine near Tucson, Ariz., and the Erie mine at Hoyt Lakes, Minn. During the 4-month endurance test of the first system at Pima, an accidental flash fire occurred in the test truck while it was working in the pit. The system successfully sensed and automatically extinguished the fire with no injury to the driver and little damage to the truck.

Preliminary to an experimental study of selected physical properties of helium and related gases) the Bureau of Mines Helium Research Center conducted a data-gathering literature survey. This report combines the results of the 1961-63 literature search into a usable format. The data accumulated on the physical properties are presented in tables and graphs. The data in the tables were chosen for exact representation and comparison of specific values. An attempt was made to select the most reliable and consistent value available for a given property without extensively analyzing each source reference. The methods of evaluation are discussed later. The graphs show trends and anomalies which may be obscure in tabular form. U.S. supply and demand data for dry natural gas by source, form, and major consuming sectors--within and between States and defined regions--were tabulated for the years 1960 and 1965. State-by-State quantitative data are provided for the natural gas industry that can be arranged into regional groupings and used to determine regional flow patterns. The tables show the derivation of the total supply of gas available for consumption from total marketed production. The tables also report the distribution of the supply among the major consuming sectors (household and commercial, industrial, transportation, and electricity generation, utilities). The summarized data show an increase in the absolute demand for natural gas in all regions for the period 1960-65, although the relative posit ions of the various subregions, with respect to national consumption, remained about the same. To enable comparison of data on dry natural gas with data on other energy sources, quantities in terms of million cubic feet were converted to British thermal unit (Btu) equivalents.
