Electrorefined, magnesium-reduced, and sodium-reduced titanium samples were evaluated for recrystallization behavior, effect of cold rolling on tensile properties, and bend ductility. Curves were determined for the softening of 2.5 to 80 percent reduced cold-rolled metal that was annealed over a temperature range of 300° to 800° C. Upon annealing, coarsening of the grains was found to occur for reductions in thickness of less than 20 percent in titanium made by all three processes. The presence of metallic impurities greatly inhibits coarsening for reductions in thickness below 20 percent, but for reductions in excess of 20 percent grain size is essentially constant at each annealing temperature. The three grades of titanium did not harden excessively from cold rolling; both tensile and bend ductility were good for reduction in thickness up to 80 percent. Upon annealing, softening occurs between 400° and 600° C., and, based on microstructure and property studies, full annealing is accomplished after 30 minutes at 700° C. for the magnesium-reduced and electrorefined titanium and at 800° C. for the sodium-reduced titanium.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has long recognized the hazards associated with rock burst activity in underground mines. Concern over lost lives and resources prompted this study to further characterize rock burst occurrence as related to microseismicity and mining. A period of over 1,079 days of mining with 101 bursts, where microseismicity rates and blasting were recorded, was used in this study. Statistical analyses investigated relationships between (1) rock burst occurrence versus blasting, (2) rock burst size versus damage, (3) rock burst occurrence versus average micro seismicity rates, and (4) rock burst occurrence versus local mine geometry. Statistical analyses showed that 91% of all rock bursts occur with blasting while only 3% of all rock bursts occur, apparently, independent of blasting. Additionally, the long-term average daily micro seismicity rates appear to dictate when blasting will trigger rock bursts. Time series analysis on the daily microseismicity resulted in model equations that may be used to forecast the daily microseismic activity.

This paper describes Mohave Mining and Milling Co. methods of mining and milling manganese ore in Arizona. It is one of a series of publications prepared by the Bureau of Mines on methods and costs in various mining districts in the United States. Production of manganese ore, as such, in Arizona began in 1915. Before this time manganiferous ores had been mined primarily for silver content and used as a smelter flux. From 1916 to 1918 approximately 69,000 long tons of manganese and mangsniferous ores were mined. After World War I production dropped to almost nothing until World War II, during which period more than 24,000 long tons were produced. A lull in mangonese mining occurred after World War II, having production rates of only a few hundred tons annually through 1952.

1.1 General The examination and evaluation of a mineral deposit to determine whether or not it can be profitably exploited entails many factors unrelated to the physical nature and intrinsic worth of that deposit. Nevertheless, geology and geologically related factors have great bearing on the economic potential of the deposit. This is only natural because the deposit owes its existence to these factors. This is even more so in underground mines where the whole system is a geologically enclosed one. Geology plays a major role in at least four phases of a mineral venture. Firstly, it acts as an indicator of the existence of parti¬cular minerals. For example, it is inconceivable that a sedimentary coal deposit would exist in a granitic batholith or stock, or that a sandstone would host primary copper or nickel sulphides. Further, the positional relationship of different rock types may be significant in locating deposits such as replacement zinc and copper sulphides in limestones which have been intruded by igneous rocks. Thus, geology is important in the exploration phase of a mineral deposit. Secondly, once potentially valuable minerals have been discovered, knowledge of geology plays a significant role in determining the dis¬tribution, grade and extent of the mineralization. In order to extend or delimit the known ore reserves adjacent to the Comet Coalition property on the western slope of the Highland Peak Range about 8 airline miles west of Pioche, Nev., the Bureau of Mines undertook an exploration project of diamond drilling. Production figures from this property, formerly known as the Schodde, are not available, but it has been reported that small amounts of rich silver and gold ore were Shipped by wagon to a smelter in the Salt Lake valley during 1900-1910. Small shipments were reported for the period 1915-1927, also. A study of the Pioche District by the Federal Geological Survey in 1942 and 1943 was the basis for the exploration program of the Bureau of Mines in 1947 This program consisted of diamond-drilling three holes. The total footage was 2,967 feet. No. 1 hole was drilled 1,260 feet, a record depth for diamond drilling in the Pioche District. Silver-bearing lead-zinc sulfide ores are found in the Combined Metals limestone, known locally as the C.M. bed, These deposits have been formed by replacement of the limestone that is inclosed in the Pioche shale.

Lower the respirable dust exposure of longwall shearer operators by isolating and con-fining the dust cloud near the face. Approach Install conveyor belt screens at various locations on the body of the shearer to contain and hold the dust cloud toward the face side of the machine. This approach provides a cleaner air split in the walkway, over the shearer operators. How It Works On most longwall shearer sections, the dust exposure of the shearer operators is primarily attributable to the machine it-self. The dust cloud originates at the face, and the exposure of the operators depends largely on how quickly this dust spreads into the walkway. Conveyor belt screens placed on the gob side of the body of the machine can reduce the amount of dust which spreads out into the walk-way. In addition, belting may be installed over any open spaces between the shearer under-frame and the panline to prevent conveyor dust from boiling out into the operator's walkway.

"Longwall mining is generally recognized as safer, more productive and economic when compared to room and pillar underground coal mining. There has been, however, increasing concern for the control of airborne coal dust concentrations in long wall faces. The airborne dust cloud at a longwall face is a complex aerosol system containing particles of varied size, density, shape and state of aggregation. For the development of more effective dust control practices in longwall faces, it is necessary to understand more clearly the characteristics of the longwall dust cloud.In this paper, results of a research study on dust concentration distributions along longwall faces are presented. The objective of this study is to characterize the longwall dust cloud behaviour and provide necessary fundamental data for a better understanding of the longwall dust problem. MSA personal samplers and gravimetric total dust samplers were employed to collect respirable and total airborne dust samples. The size distribution of these samples was determined by MicroTrac SPA. The instantaneous respirable airborne dust concentrations were recorded using RAM-I. The dust concentrations are related to face operations, particularly the shearer location and activities. The size distribution of airborne dust, instantaneous respirable airborne dust concentration, and air quantity distributions along longw all faces reveal a complex dust flow phenomenon. Additional fundamental studies are needed for characterizing the temporal and spatial behaviour of the dust cloud at longwall faces.IntroductionModern mechanized longwall mining was introduced in the United States in the 1960's and has become more common in the last twenty years. United States longwalls are multiple-entry retreating faces. According to a recent survey, 91 of the 102 longwall faces employ double-drum shearers (1). Several recently installed longwall faces have consistently produced over 4 000 to 5 000 tons per shift over extended periods of operation. The trend in under-ground coal mining in the U.S. certainly is toward the introduction of longwalls. This trend is true not only for new mines but also for renovation of existing mines. While longwall mining has many advantages over other mining methods, including improved safety, such as higher pro-duction. greater productivity and enhanced reserve recov-ery, it is associated with severe problems of dust control. The increase in longwall production has been accompanied by an increase in respirable dust problems which limit realizing the full potential of the longwall mining system. Despite the efforts to develop improved equipment and operational procedures to control the dust levels at longwall faces, it is still difficult to bring several double-drum shearer operations into compliance with the Federal stand¬ards of 2,0 mg/m 3 respirable dust without loss of produc¬tion. In fiscal year 1987, fifty-eight of the longwall sections were found to be in non-compliance once, and an additional 31 were cited two or more times'''. If the full potential of the longwall mining method is to be realized, new measures must be implemented to control the dust concentration to mandated levels. There is a need for detailed and extensive sampling of longwall faces to understand the dust source-sink relationships and the transient ambient concentrations. These must be related to the mining activities on the face. This paper is to characterize the longwall dust cloud behavior through a series of experiments in operating faces and provide necessary fundamental data for further studies to develop improved dust control practices."

The bauxite diagram presented as figure 1 was developed to clarify, by graphic means, the theoretical chemical constituents of gibbsite-kaolinite-type bauxite for all possible proportions of these two minerals from pure gibbsite to pure kaolinite. The tables in the report reflect the same date. The diagram provides (1) a graphic representation of the relations of constituents with respect to a ill possible percentages of alumina and silica, (2) a basis for verifying the accuracy of analyses of gibbsite-kaolinite bauxite, and (3) a basis for estimating the type and proportion of alumina hydrate and/or silicate minerals that may be present in gibbsite-kaolinite-type bauxite. The diagram, with accompanying interpretations and use formulas, will be useful to those connected with the mining and processing of bauxite.

Several recent ignitions of firedamp - a mixture of methane and air - in American coal mines have been attributed to frictional heating when hard rocks were struck while cutting and drilling coal seams. Although none of these ignitions caused severe explosions, they call attention to a problem that can become increasingly significant as mechanized mining is developed further. The power in and rapid release of energy from high-speed machinery has increased the rates of advance into virgin coal creating many problems. Unforeseen faults and hard mineral inclusions may be encountered; coal brought down in this way is finer in size; more gas is released from the seam; it is frequently more difficult to provide adequate ventilation at the' face; and new roof-support problems must be solved. In particular, continuous mining machines (also known as continuous miners) greatly increase the frequency of contact between cutter bits and minerals. In view of these conditions, it may be expected that more gas ignitions will occur as a result of frictional heating unless the situation is understood and remedial measures are introduced. The problem of frictional heating is not new in coal mining. In Europe, particularly in England, it has been a concern for more than a century. During the last 15 to 20 years frictional ignitions have been a major cuase of explosions in British mines. Explanations for the greater number of such ignitions in England may be the special character of the coal measure strata, the mining methods, the rate of gas emission and possibly its composition, and less effective ventilation near the face. To reduce the ignition hazard, considerable laboratory and field research has been conducted, particularly by the Safety in Mines Research Establishment, Ministry of Fuel and Power of Great Britain. Much of the information presented in this report has been drawn from these studies.

Manganese oxides occur, with some iron oxides, in small scattered lenses on property controlled by the Columbia Manganese Co. (1943) near Evington, Campbell County, Va. The company mined some manganese ore during 1917 and 1918. A preliminary examination in May 1942 indicated the possibility of finding additional ore. On August 21, 1942, the Bureau of Mines began prospecting to verify the continuity of the ore exposures. Work on this project continued until February 5, 1943. Prospecting and development work included shaft sinking, crosscutting, drifting, trenching, and test-pitting in six separate areas indicating two types of deposits. The most predominant type is a wide brecciated area in which occur lenses or pockets of nodular manganese oxides. The other type is characterized by more of a vein structure, including thin layers of manganese oxides.

An investigation was conducted to evaluate the use of a formcoke as the total fuel in the Bureau of Mines experimental blast furnace. The formcoke performed very satisfactorily, and comparisons made with a metallurgical coke showed that the performance with the formcoke was somewhat superior under the experimental conditions used.

Investigations by the Federal Bureau of Mines indicate that hafnium and zirconium compounds of acceptable purity can be extracted from Nigerian zircon concentrates. Chlorination and caustic soda fusion techniques were used to extract 85 to 95 percent of the valuable metals from the concentrate. The extracted hafnium and zirconium compounds were purified by recrystallization of the oxychlorides or by formation of complex salts during chlorination. The zirconium-hafnium product of the recrystallization method contained 15 parts per million of uranium, and the product of the salt-complex method contained less than 10 parts per million of uranium. The hafnium was separated from zirconium by solvent extraction methods. A zirconium product containing 0.3 percent hafnium and a hafnium product containing 4 percent zirconium were obtained. At the request of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), work was started to develop techniques for processing Nigerian zircon concentrates in commercial installations presently engaged in producing zirconium and hafnium metals from ores. The Nigerian zircon has a high hafnium content, but the presence of uranium and thorium is a problem not normally encountered in processing zircon concentrates.

"The premium on gold in London, reflecting the further depreciation of the pound sterling, has risen from about 22 per cent as noted in these reports for December, to about 28%. This will enable more South African gold mines to come into the profitably ;reducing class, and will also tend to increase the gold production from that region.Figures are now at hand showing the drop that occured in the sold output in the Transvaal, South Africa, during 1919, in which year 8,330,091 ounces of gold were produced against 8,418, 292 ounces in 1918, a decrease of 88,200 ounces. Annual gold output from this, the most important gold area in the world, has dropped almost one million ounces in the past three years, as the following table shows:Although the decrease in not as marked comparatively as that of 1918 over 1917, it is a further indication of the general world-wide curtailment of gold production, and the steady decline in production everywhere that is going on and will continue until some rational means is found to stimulate production, or until conditions return to normal.The subject of relief for the gold miner has received attention in all parts of the world, particularly in the United States and South Africa in the past few years, but in spite of all the plane that have been formulated to remedy the situation none have yet been adopted anywhere, due mainly to great danger of tampering with the gold standard. In the United. States a plan has advanced by H. N. Lawrie of the American Mining Congress to tax the new gold entering into manufacture of jewelry or the arts in general, as furnishing some measure of increased compensation to unprofitable gold mining.Gold production in Australia, as indication by figures issued by the Australian Mines department, shows a marked decrease, and for the first ten months of 1919 amounted to 914,957 ounces against 1,073,317 ounces for a similar period in 1918. Western Australia produces about two thirds of all the gold rained on that continent. The total gold production of Australia for 1919 will reflect the universal decrease in output.Ever since June 7, when the embargo on the export of gold Was lifted, there has been steady and heavy outflow of gold from this country, as a consequence of which considerable gold accumulated during the war has been exported. The effect of gamma radiation on Pennsylvania anthracite and on reactions between anthracite and other materials was studied using a shielded , selfcontained 23,000 - curie cobalt 60 source . When anthracite was exposed to air at 65° C the reaction with oxygen was greater in the presence of radiation. than in its absence . Although drop- shatter tests indicated that exposure to radiation decreased the resistance to breakage of anthracite , this evidence of structural weakening was not supported by the results of grindability or particle- size studies . Irradiation caused definite changes in the gases evolved from evacuated samples of anthracite ; the percentages of hydrogen and carbon dioxide were increased, and the methane concentration remained unchanged . Carbon monoxide was evolved only from the unirradiated samples . Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR ) measurements indicated large differences between evacuated samples and those exposed to air . There was little or no difference between irradiated and unirradiated samples , except that the free- radical content of unirradiated samples of anthracite increased progressively with higher temperatures of evacuation , but in the case of irradiated samples , no such behavior was found . Attempts to produce carbon disulfide and calcium carbide by reacting anthracite with sulfur up to 120 ° C , and with calcium oxide up to 400 ° C , were unsuccessful .

The Bureau of Mines has long been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts, the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions1 issued by the Bureau of Mines, and the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor; if it is not, a price adjustment is made. The Government, with the exception of the Tennessee Valley Authority, purchased approximately 5.5 million tons of coal in fiscal year 1971. In connection with these purchases, the Bureau analyzed 4,366 samples. These are published (table 1) for the use of Government officials and the public. Such analyses of delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research to determine the effectiveness of long holes in degasifying an area of the Upper Split of the Lower Sunnyside coalbed at Kaiser Steel Co.'s Sunnyside No.1 mine. These holes were drilled from the two outside entries of a section that was closed to mining because of excessive methane emissions. Two holes drilled to 430 and 450 feet produced initial gas flows of 160,000 and 127,000 cfd, respectively. Sixteen days after the completion of the second hole, the total gas production declined to just over 144,000 cfd. In 9 months of degasification, over 35 MMcf of commercial-quality gas has been removed from the coalbed. The combined gas flows declined to 106,000 cfd in the 9-month period. The two holes have reduced face emissions by about 40 pet.

This paper, describing the mining and reduction methods and costs at the Oceanic quicksilver mine, is one of a series of similar reports being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on various mines in the United states. The property, which is owned and operated by the Anglo American Mining Corporation, Ltd., is 5 miles east of Cambria, San Luis Obispo County, Calif. It lies in a region of steep hills and sharply incised canyons on the west slope of the Santa Lucia Range at an elevation of about 500 feet above sea level. The climate is ideal for living and operating conditions. A 40-mile paved highway connects the mine with San Luis Obispo, the nearest convenient railroad town.

In 1987, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 34,680-acre Lime Canyon Wilderness Study Area (NV-050-231) to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The Wilderness Study Area is in Clark County, NV, about 30 air miles southwest of Mesquite, NV. The area studied contains an estimated 44 million tons of indicated subeconomic resources of gypsum, an inferred subeconimic resource of limestone and dolomite, and occurrences of gold, copper, uranium, and zeolite. The Wilderness Study Area is underlain chiefly by carbonate rocks with lesser amounts of sandstone and shale. Metamorphic, granitic, and volcanic rocks also crop out within the area. Large portions of the area are overlain by alluvium. The Wilderness Study Area is within the Gold Butte mining district. Several gold mines with past production are nearby to the south of the Wilderness Study Area; one mine is reported in operation on a small scale. Several silver-bearing copper and zinc mines with past production are nearby to the east of the Wilderness Study Area

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted experiments in the intermediate-scale fire tunnel to assess the influence of air velocity on the gas production and smoke characteristics during smoldering and flaming combustion of Pittsburgh seam coal and its impact on the detection of the combustion products. On-line determinations of mass and number of smoke particles, light transmission, and various gas concentrations were made. From these experimental values, generation rates, heat-release rates, production constants, particle sizes, obscuration rates, and optical densities were calculated. Ventilation has a direct effect on fire detection and development. The results indicate that, in general, increased air velocity lengthened the onset of smoke and flaming ignition, increased the fire intensity, but decreased the gas and smoke concentrations. Increased air velocity also lengthened the response times of all the fire sensors tested. Rapid and reliable detector response at this most crucial stage of fire development can increase the possibility that appropriate miner response (fire suppression tactics or evacuation) can be completed before toxic smoke spreads throughout the mine.

"From time to time the United States Bureau of Mines has received reports of gas explosions alleged to have been caused by correctly assembled flame safety lamps. In most of the mines where the explosions occurred the lamp was in use at a working face where the velocity of the ventilating current would be relatively low. The inference has been that the lamp was correctly assembled but that the gauze became sufficiently overheated to ignite the surrounding atmosphere.As part of its routine investigation of flame safety lamps the Bureau of Mines subjects each lamp to a test in still and moving atmospheres to determine its safety. Heretofore, as long as the lam, successfully passed this and other tests no determinations as to the margin between success and failure were made; hence, in attempting to answer inquiries concerning the reported explosions it was found desirable to be able to give actual gauze temperatures as a measure of the comparative safety of lamps under various conditions. The previous laboratory tests of flame lamps in still mixtures were made in a chamber or ""gallery"" of relatively small volume where the lamps might have been subject more or less to the smothering effect of the combustion products. It was therefore decided to make a special series of tests to obtain the gauze temperatures of both bonneted and unbonneted lamps in still and low velocity mixtures, using a larger gallery to offset any smothering effect.These tests are believed to represent the first attempt at measuring gauze temperatures by means of themocouples. The results will not only be of interest but will also be helpful to many in determining the status of flame safety lamps relative to gas ignitions in mines."
