The effect of small percentages of sodium chloride on the incendivity of permissible explosives was studied by the Bruceton up-and-down technique in gallery tests. Both the reduction in incendivity achieved by addition of sodium chloride and application of the test method to explosives evaluation are discussed. It is demonstrated that the up-and-down technique in gallery testing is suitable for distinguishing differences in incendivity between different explosive compositions and between lots of the same composition. The study also shows that addition of relatively small quantities of sodium chloride tends to reduce the incendivity of explosives to firedamp, but addition of sodium chloride cannot insure reduced incendivity. Any improvement attributable to the salt can be counteracted by undefined variations in the explosive. The need for experimental investigations of a number of factors that may affect the safety of permissible explosives is emphasized. Timber decay is due largely if not wholly to a fungus growth on the timber from which it derives' food; a warm, moist atmosphere is necessary for rapid growth. The decay is spread from infected timber to sound timber by countless microscopic spores or seeds given off by the fungus growth and carried by air currents or by long, cottonlike threads, which spread from timber to timber. Haulage roads in most mines in the central coal fields are also return aircourses; hence moisture and temperature conditions are ideal for the rapid decay of mine ties and mine timber. Possibly the return air, which contains a higher percentage of carbon dioxide than normal outside air, also stimulates the growth of fungi. Those familiar with coal mining have observed the more pronounced growth of fungi and decay of timber in poorly ventilated worked-out sections of mines where the air is moist and where usually the percentage of carbon dioxide in the air is considerably above normal.

"The Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust (GTCRD) was created at The Pennsylvania State University and West Virginia University by a congressional initiative in 1983 responding to recommendations in the 1980 National Academy of Sciences study on the Measurement and Control of Dust in Mines. Many of these recommendations dealt with the need to initiate focused fundamental research for further professional progress in dust control. Long-term, sustained support was emphasized to develop expertise in respirable dust research. In creating this Center, Penn State and West Virginia University were specifically recognized for their expertise in and facilities for research on coal mining and medicine. Today, the Center includes the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Minnesota, and the Michigan Technology University. The Respirable Dust Center is the only organization that coordinates and integrates the medical, scientific, and engineering aspects of respirable dust disease. The Center works with the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA), and the U.S. coal industry in defining the research priorities for the programs of the Center to enhance research synergism.The Center's mission is to enhance the health, safety and productivity of miners by advancing the fundamental understanding of all aspects of respirable dust associated with mining and milling and the interaction of dust and lungs to reduce the incidence and severity of respirable dust disease.All Dust Center activities are focused to be responsive to this mission, which is shared by the several federal agencies closely associated with the GTCRD. While significant progress has made mine atmospheres cleaner and healthier, respirable dust-related disease remains the nation's most pernicious industrial hazard.The goals of the GTCRD were formulated with recognition of the diverse scientific, engineering, and medical aspects of respirable dust, in addition to a need to enhance researcher interaction, as well as education and technology transfer efforts, in the respirable dust area. These goals reflect the needs of the mining industry as determined by the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Measurement and Control of Respirable Dust study done in 1980. The report of this committee encouraged the Bureau of Mines to redirect its research efforts ""...toward obtaining fundamental understanding of the origin, transport and characteristics of respirable coal mine dust."" The GTCRD's goals, detailed in chapter three of this document, were formulated to mesh with NAS recommendations."

The Munsch National First-Aid Instructors Association had its inception during the teaching of a Federal Bureau of Mines first-aid instructors' class at McPherson, Kans., under a cooperative plan of first-aid training. Upon completion of- the course on July 1, 1938 members of the class organized the charter chapter of the association under the name of McPherson (Kans.) District Charter Chapter No. 1. On July 1, 1941, 3 years after the founding of the association, there were 15 chapters in the national council -7 in Kansas, 3 in Oklahoma, 2 in Texas, 2 in New Mexico, and 1 in Arkansas. Although the pioneer work of the association was done in the petroleum industry, the plan will be of even greater benefit to a district in which there are various types of plants, mince, and operations of the mineral and allied industries. [On December 2, 1932, the Governor of California called upon the representatives of the mining industry of the State to attend a meeting at Sacramento to discuss ways and means of assisting is relieving some of its perplexing and extremely distressing problems, particularly the mounting cost of accidents which faces the industry with an industrial insurance rate for classification of $11.85 per $100 of pay roll, effective January 1, 1033. The significance of this fact is at once apparent when it is realized that the classification rates per $100 of pay roll for mining have steadily increased for some time, as follows: $3.91 in 1924, $5.54 in 1925 and 1926, $8.04 in 1927, $8.53 in 1928, $9.05 in 1929, $9.42 in 1930, $10.54 in 1931, $10.99 in 1952, and $11.85 in 1133. In other words, the cost rates have acre than doubled, wile statistics indicate that the accident rates nave shown an entirely different trend. At the meeting mentioned, one of the management officials sounded an effective keynote when he declared that a spade should be called: a spade. The perplexing problems of any industry can be approached best and remedies applied if that policy is kept to the front. It is appropriate to mention that high accident rates and a decrease in wages in recent years have unquestionably accounted in part for a unit cost rate, on a pay-roll basis; it also is well to explain that the policy years3 1926 to 1930, inclusive, are the years on which the accident-cost experience for 193: is based. That accident rates :lave not undergone the expected beneficial chance in California's experience is apparent in the words of a Bureau of Mines report:4]

The feldspars are a series of related aluminum silicates containing varying proportions of potash, soda, rind lime; smaller amounts of other minerals arc likely to be present as impurities. They comprise three principal types: Potash spars, microline and orthoclase (KA12Si208); soda feldspar or albite (NaA1Si308); and soda-lime e (plagioclase) fellspars. The last-named is an intermediate group ranging from albite through oligoclase, andesine, labradorite, and bytownite to anorthite or line feldspar (CnA12Si2O8), Minor varieties are barium feldspar or celsian and a potash-barium feldspar. Perthite is a mixture of orthoclase end albite in alternate layers. Graphic granite or "corduroy spar" is an intergrowth of feldspar and quartz characteristically in the ratio of 3:1. Cornwall stone is a natural mixture of feldspar, quartz, end kaolinite imported in former years in sizable quantity from Cornwall, England. (A similar synthetic mixture, including some fluorspar, has been blended and marketed in the United States as "Carolina stone".)

The probable inadequacy of physical tests of coke for the purposes for which they are made has been a subject for discussion for many years. However, little has been published in this connection, even though most workers in the field believe that the physical properties of coke are of major importance in its utilization in the steel and allied industries. In fact, the reproducibility of the recognized tests is largely unknown or can only be approximated. This situation occasions many difficulties when attempts are made to judge the coke-production qualities of various coals or coal blends. During World War II the Coke Production Committee, composed of representatives from industry and the Solid Fuels Administration, concluded that study of existing testing methods and possible improvements would be of material assistance in answering questions relating to coke quality. Since that time the Bureau of Mines has taken samples of coke produced in industrial slot-type coke ovens in connection with studies aimed at extending coking-coal reserves by adding to the list of sources known to be suitable for this purpose. Testing procedures on these cokes were arranged so that the data obtained would yield information on (1) the degree of precision of tests commonly used in the industry, (2) the causes of the known poor reproducibility in several of the physical tests, and (3) possible improvements or modifications of existing physical testing procedures.

Remote Sealing System Sensitivity 9. 1 Introduction In the previous sections a description of the overall system has been presented along with detailed descriptions of the equipment and techniques employed with the preliminary probing system, the seal em¬placement system and the seal checking system. In addition, the use of these subsystems in a specific mine application has been described in considerable detail. A broad range of parameters of interest was specified in the contract, as summarized in Section 1. 3. Most of these are a function of the general location; i. e. , the location of the mine, and the specific location; i. e. , the location of the boreholes. These parameters of interest include passage size, shape, depth, slope and water con¬ditions. The length, diameter and location of the boreholes within the mine passage and on the surface are critical parameters as well. A few additional parameters may affect one or more of the remote sealing subsystems. These include temperature, topography, rock and soil conditions, and underground water. While variation in these parameters will not render the system inoperative, consideration of them in the planning stages will simplify and expedite the field operation. In the following sections the effect of the various parameters on the remote sealing operation will be discussed. For clarity, the several tasks, borehole drilling and casing, preliminary probing, fly ash delivery, foam topping and seal checking, will each be considered separately.

In 2006, a total of 741 nonmetal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 These mines (e.g., potash, gypsum, salt) comprised 5.0% of all operations. ? Mines producing common clay comprised 25.2% (n=187) of all nonmetal mining operations. ? Nonmetal mining operations were located in all states and territories except Alaska, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.

The Bureau of Mines examined the effects of high humidity and water droplets on the GCA Corp. real-time aerosol monitor (RAM--l). which uses a lO4mm cyclone preseparator. Tests were conducted both in a laboratory and in a full-scale model mine entry. The laboratory tests were conducted in a test chamber saturated with moisture and water droplets. Under these extreme conditions. the RAM-I responded by indicating dust concentrations of 1-1/2 to 2 mg/m3? although the air was dust free. Within the first 2 h of each test. water accumulated in the cyclone and affected the cyclone particle separation characteristics. resulting in readings of 3 to 4 mg/m3. In addition. condensation formed inside the RAM-I case and affected the liquid crystal display (LCD). However. the full-scale mine entry tests revealed that the RAM-I can function ac-ceptably in an atmosphere of water vapor and water droplets similar to the most severe conditions found in an underground mine.

Data from oil well logs and core analyses were used to quantitatively evaluate formation porosity and water saturation of heterogeneous carbonates and to study the pore geometry and performance characteristics of cores from these formations. Logs and cores from the Madison limestone from 233 wells in three fields in the Williston basin were used in the investigation. A comparison of log and core analyses shows that log porosities are consistently larger than core porosities, and the differences are correlatable with core porosity ranges. Water saturations from logs are usually smaller than the corresponding core saturations by summation of fluids, but the difference is attributable to mud filtrate invasion into the cores during drilling. Petrophysical studies show that the low permeabilities and high residual water saturations in these reservoir rocks are due to their fine crystalline texture and complex pore geometry (heterogeneity). It is concluded that both log and core analyses must be used for reliable evaluation of these carbonate formations.

The Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 defines an independent contractor as "any person, partnership, corporation, subsidiary of a corporation, firm, association or other organization that contracts to perform services or construction at a mine." Contractors that perform specific types of work (e.g., shaft and slope sinking, material handling within mine property, drilling and blasting) are required to report the number of employees who perform work at coal mines and at metal and nonmetal mines.

The last previous Bureau of Mines publication relative to details of permissible methane detectors (Bulletin 331, published in 1930) describes detectors of four different types, namely flame, combustion, catalytic, and a combination Weatstone-bridge and catalytic type in which catalytic action at the surface of a platinum filament when in methane causes a change in the temperature and resistance of the filament, thus unbalancing the bridge circuit and giving a reading proportional to the methane concentration. Three detractors of the latter type have been approved since 1930. A brief description of each follows: U. C. C. Detector Approval No. 902, covering the U. C. C. indicating detector, as described in Bulletin 331, was extended. January 27, 1930, to cover important changes in design that permit checking the calibration of the detector at any time whether in gas or fresh air. Essential features of the detector are shown in figure 1.

Transient electrical noise events pose serious problems for data acquisition systems used in monitoring acoustic emissions in laboratory and field environments. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has designed and constructed a trigger discriminator circuit for use in ultrasonic acoustic emission studies. Designed for use with signals in the frequency range of 50 to 400 kHz, the instrument examines .incoming signals for frequency content, amplitude, simultaneity, threshold crossings, and number of channels above threshold. If preselected criteria on these properties are met, a plus 5-V pulse is output that may be used to trigger a data acquisition system, allowing rejection of noise events that do not possess useful information. The system was designed for four input channels, but may be expanded to more channels with minimal design changes.

The lowest number of fatalities from coal-mine explosions in the United States in any year since records have been kept was the total of 8 in 1949 and again in 1950. Even incomplete records as far back as 1870 reveal a larger annual loss of life from explosions. From 1890 to 1948 the lowest annual loss was 32 in 1946. A smaller total of 15 fatalities was reported in 1952. Figure 1 shows the total yearly loss of life from explosions in all coal mines since 1880. Those in anthracite mines alone are shown by the shaded area. The erratic variation of the chart line shows the difficulties that have confronted the industry in the struggle to control and eliminate mine explosions. Potential hazards have existed in marry mines without realization that only a small change in conditions could initiate a disaster. Many disasters causing great loss of life occurred in mines that had been regularly operated without incident for long periods. Although the number of coal-mine explosions causing great lose of life has been kept down in recent years, the exceptions still make the record anything but satis¬factory. There have been almost no widespread explosions for several years, but in a few instances many lives were lost from afterdamp. Although the violence and spread of mine explosions may be controlled, the loss of life may be heavy if many of the men happen to be in the path of the smoke and gases. For these reasons, the strictest controls must be maintained to eliminate all factors that might combine to cause even a small ignition of gas or dust.
