Lead-silver deposits in the Omilak area, on the western slopes of the Darby Mountains, Seward Peninsula, Alaska, were investigated by the Bureau of Mines, during the 1953 and 1954 field seasons, as a part of the U.S. Department of Interior's continuing program for the development of Alaska's resources. The Omilak area was the scene of early day prospecting and mining activity. The Omilak mine, which operated from 1881 to 1890, was the second producing lode mine in Alaska; the first was a small gold mine near Sitka. Several hundred tons of ore were produced at the Omilak mina; as an indication of grade, 41 tons shipped from Omilak in 1889 contained 75 percent lead and 142 ounces of silver per ton. A prominent, nearby occurrence of lead-silver minerals, found but not explored during this period, has since become known as the Foster prospect. Subsequent exploration of this prospect revealed an abundance of massive galena occurring on an outcrop and as float scattered through limestone talus. Evidence of lead deposition, together with the generally high silver content of lead ores previously shipped from the district, indicated that deposits might be found which would be commercially valuable even in this remote area. To investigate the possibility, the Bureau of Mines made a reconnaissance of the Omilak area and did bulldozer trenching, diamond core drilling, and sampling at the roster prospect. Data resulting from the investigation are presented in detail in this report and are summarized in the following paragraphs.

In view of the necessity or increasing production of metallurgical fluorspar to satisfy wartime demands, 0, M. Bishop, former district engineer of the Bureau of Mines, L. W. Carrier and. J. S. Williams, senior geologist of the Federal Geological Survey, and E. H. Dawson, mining engineer of the War Production Board made a joint survey of the Illinois-Kentucky fluorite district in July 1942 to determine what steps should be taken to increase production. As part of their recommendations, a program for exploring the idle Klondike mine in Livingston County, Ky., was outlined. All the ore produced at the Klondike mine was mined above the 325-foot level, where some tonnage remains. Factors that influenced selection of the Klondike mine for exploration were favorable geological conditions, the state of mine development and the availability of pumping equipment and some usable mine and mill equipment. In December 1942, the Metals Reserve Co. leased the Klondike mine from the Salem Fluorspar Co.

The Bureau of Mines has compiled pipeline mileage every 5 years since 1926, with the exception of the war period 1941 to 1949. The present survey has been made to reflect the progress under mobilization of the petroleum pipeline industry where efforts have been made by the government to stimulate construction of those facilities that would best equip the nation for a possible major emergency. This report summarizes the total mileage change 1n petroleum pipelines for 1950 through 1952. In order to increase the value of the information gathered the reporting companies were requested for the first time to report not only the net change in mileage as formerly, but also all new and used pipe laid and the total taken up. This new information permits effective appraisal of the construction effort of the industry and relates it to steel requirements.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 295 natural gas samples from 18 States collected during calendar year 1963 as part of a continuous survey of the United States for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863/ and 576.4/

This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. By agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, identification of the items is confidential. It presents analytical data for 4,680 samples, representing the products of 130 companies. The samples were collected during December 1953 and January and February 1954. As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered by this survey include those from both large and small suppliers. The data were obtained by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. A list of the National Motor-Gasoline Survey reports published during the past ten years is given on page 5.

[A cost/benefit analysis was conducted by comparing the industry cost to protective structures on low-coal face equipment with the benefits paid for injuries/fatalities considered preventable by the use of these structures. Th industry costs were based on estimates by OEM's and rebuild shops for install protective structures on new and rebuilt face equipment. The accident benefit was based on evaluations performed by the USBM Accident Cost Indicator Model. Industry wide population data were developed on low-coal face equipment and injuries/ fatalities preventable with protective structures. The results of the analysis are to be used as a tool by USBM in determining the feasibility of continuing development of cab and canopy technology for low-coal equipment.]

This paper is a continuation of a series made in cooperation with the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC), Inc. "The problem of signaling to the hoisting engineer from a moving cage in the shaft has been considered by many mine operators for a number of years. There are several methods in use in different mining districts, and so far as the writer is aware they have been further developed in Utah than in any other state. The latest installations are of interest because they use a very low-voltage circuit for the shaft wires and also because the wiring can be so arranged that the hoist can be stopped from the cage, if so desired.The first installation in Utah was in the shaft of the Centennial-Eureka mine under the management of C. E. Allen. It was placed in operation in the summer of 1899, end has been in continuous and satisfactory operation for 21 years. The arrangement consists or two bare wires down the shaft carrying a current at 60 volts potential, with a device on the cage for making connection between the two wires. This device is simply a short piece of wire which is thoroughly insulated from the cage and is operated by a short lever. Whenever the cage rider wishes to signal the engineer he pulls down the lever, forcing the short wire out against the two bare wires, thus making a circuit which rings the bell in the hoist-room. A similar device was planned in the Grand Central shaft at Mammoth, Utah, but was later abandoned. The cause of failure was reported to be that the shaft was very wet."

Shortly after the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939 we passed by Congress, the Bureau of Mines was authorized to begin a program of investigation of domestic sources of strategic minerals. Since World War I, the Philipsburg district had been virtually the only one in the United States that was producing manganese on a commercial scale. Consequently, the district was among the first to he investigated. During the summer of 1939, the Geological Survey mapped the geology and ore deposits of the district. In late July 1939 the writer examined the district for the Bureau of Mines. On the basis of this examination and of the work performed by the Geological Survey, the Bureau of Mines diamond-drilled at several properties in the district during the summer of 1940. This report reviews the mining history and geology of the district, and presents the factual data obtained by diamond drilling.

FOLLOWING the rapid recovery of previous years, the U.S. economy continued the upward trend and moved forward moderately and sporadically during the first half of 1962. There was a slow-down in the recovery rate, which was especially notable in the third quarter. The economy recovered in the fourth quarter, and by the end of 1962 the gross national product amounted to $555 billion, a new high, 7 percent above that of 1961. Production, employment, personal income, and corporate profits all achieved new peaks, but unemployment continued high and the prospects for improvement remained poor. The economy again failed to us~ its full potential; 1962 was a good year, but not good enough. During 1962, all industrial production climbed from the low in January to a high in late summer which lasted through the fall, and declined slightly at yearend. Mining production followed this pattern closely and most sectors were approaching record highs. Most minerals gained in value and volume of production. The steel-associated minerals group was the only exception, and it sustained a small net loss. The nonfuel minerals industry opened the year at a high level, maintained this high level until late summer, with the peak in May, and drifted downward toward the end of the year. The gains recorded by nonferrous metal mining partly offset the loss of ferrous metal mining, resulting in a small gain for metal mining as a whole. The samples were collected during June, July, and August, 1953. As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered by this survey include those from both large and small suppliers. The data were obtained by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. A list of the National Motor-Gasoline Survey reports published during the past 10 years is given on page 5.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the effects of HCI concentration and solution temperature on the solubility and crystal form of the chlorides of Co, Mn, and Ni when sparged with HCI gas at temperatures of 20°, 40°, and 60° C. Increasing HCI concentration in solution caused the chlo-rides of Co, Mn, and Ni to crystallize (salt out) because of the common ion effect. The salting-out crystallization was most effective for NiCI2, which had a solubility of 0.7 pct at 20° C and maximum HCI concentration. COCl2 salted out to a minimum solubility of 9.4 pct at 20° C and 22 pct HCI concentration and increased in solubility at greater HCI concentrations because of the formation of chloride complexes. MnCl2 was intermediate in behavior. The effect of temperature on solubility was greatest for CoCl2 and least for NiCI2, 15 and 7 pct change, respectively, over the temperature range of 20° to 60° C. The salted-out chlorides of cobalt and nickel formed the hexahydrates and those of manganese formed the tetrahydrate in saturated metal chlo-ride solutions at 20° C and low concentrations of HCI. Increasing the temperature or the HCI concentration caused a 108s in waters of hydra-tion. At 60° C, the salted-out crystals of NiCl2 formed the tetrahydrate in HCI concentrations up to 18 pct and the dihydrate at higher concentrations, while cobalt and manganese chlorides formed the dihydrates, even in water.

In addition to explosion-proof enclosures, the IEC has published recommendations: 1. 79-2 Pressurized Enclosures, 2. 79-3 Intrinsic Safety, 3. 79-5 Sand-Filled Apparatus, 4. 79-6 Oil-Immersed Apparatus, and 5. 79-7 Increased Safety. All these are valid methods of electrical hazard reduction and find wide use in industries other than mining. Magison (52) discusses in detail each technique and, therefore, such an examination will not be repeated. Two other systems, lamina and labyrinth, are but variations of common explosion-proof enclosures and, therefore, will not be cov¬ered. (34,35,46,53,54,61) By examining other national authorities' opinion, the following will investigate each system's applicability to coal mining. Intrinsic safety applies to any system which is incapable of re¬leasing sufficient energy to be an electrical hazard. (49) Not one foreign country contacted disagreed with the concept, and they find these systems totally acceptable. Only South Africa does not accept oil-immersed apparatus, but no reasons were given. (62) Healy (27) stated that Queenlands, Austrailia would accept all techniques, yet some were still to be employed. Japan specifications allow for all but sand filled. (42,43) Increased safety or Protection Type "e" is an approach in hazard reduction in which special design considerations are applied to ensure an extremely low probability of electrical or mechanical breakdown

The effect of the temperature of SmF3-LiF electrolyte on the electrolytic preparation of samarium-cobalt alloy by the consumable cathode technique was investigated. The temperatures of the cathode zone, alloy collection zone, and samarium oxide (Sm203) feed zone had to be controlled carefully to obtain a satisfactory samarium-cobalt alloy product. Any appreciable deviation from certain temperature values adversely affected yield and product quality.

Computer-aided loadflow and fault analyses of mine power systems are routinely conducted to ascertain system performance and also to provide information to assist in the protection and coordination of these systems. Three-winding transformers are frequently encountered in mining applications, typically at continuous miner and longwall sections where there exists a need for dual utilization voltages. These transformers are often modeled as a three-bus system neglecting the secondary to tertiary winding impedance and the effect of base changes. This paper analyzes the impact of more accurate transformer models on voltages and fault currents which are realized from loadflow and fault studies of mine power systems.

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions3 issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor; if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.4/ Further reports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding sum¬mers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.4/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed.!The present report presents analytical data for 4,544 samples, represent¬ing the products of 124 companies. The samples represented in this report were obtained during December 19146, January and February 19-(. As in previous surveys, the companies covered Ly the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 2,368 samples, 319 items, and 113 brands; premium-price, 2,172 samples, 289 items, and 106 brands; third-grade, 4 samples, 4 items, and 4 brands.
