The thickness of the coal seam is one of the more important items influencing the productivity and general overall efficiency of operation of a coal mine. The average thickness of coal seams mined in the United States has changed very little in the past 40 years. The first measurement of thickness of bituminous coal and lignite seams was made for 1920, when the average thickness was 5.3 feet.2 The average thickness for later years was as follows: 1945, 5.4 feet; 1950, 5.3 feet; 1955, 5.2 feet; 1960, 5.3 feet; and 1965, 5.2 feet.3 Table 1 includes data on number and production of bituminous coal and lignite mines classified by 1-foot intervals of seam thickness mined in 1920, 1945, 1950, 1955, 1960, and 1965. Though bituminous coal and lignite are mined today from seams of exceedingly variable thickness--less than 2 feet to more than 50 feet--a large majority of the production, 62 percent in 1965, came from seams 3 to 6 feet thick. This is not surprising since the coal seam of moderate thickness presents the least mining difficulties.

The Bureau of Mines, under the sponsorship of the Space Nuclear Propulsion Office, conducted a laboratory-scale hydrogen safety study which determined several combustion characteristics of hydrogen diffusion flames. Experiments show that ambient air may enter the top of a hydrogen flare stack when the hydrogen flow is low. A new concept, supported by photographic evidence, predicts that diffusion flames burning in air on a wide, upright pipe (stack) and fed with slow, upward flows of buoyant gas will induce a downward flow of air along the walls of the pipe that can support combustion within the pipe. Predicted flamedip limits agree roughly with experimental values determined on 6-, 12-, and 18-inch-diameter stacks and increase with increasing stack diameter. Measurements were made of the limiting flow at which a hydrogen diffusion flame blows out in still air. By means of an empirical application of the critical boundary 8 velocity gradient concept, these data lead to a blowout limit of about 10 reciprocal seconds for a hydrogen diffusion flame. Burning rates of large hydrogen diffusion flames ranging from about 0.03 to 1 ft/sec were used to predict approximate flame heights on flare stacks. Temperatures of larger hydrogen diffusion flames up to about 3,600° F were observed, but the most representative value appears to be about 2,600° F. It was found that crosswinds do not strip significant amounts of unburned hydrogen from its diffusion flame and that water-cooled flare stacks are not likely to be damaged when flame is blown back into them by opposing winds.

"INTRODUCTION The first important discovery of petroleum in New Mexico was near Dayton, Eddy County, where the Brown well was drilled in 1909, and small quantities of oil were produced. In 1911 and 1912 wells were drilled in McKinley County, but commercial production did not begin until the discovery of the Hogback field, San Juan County, in 1922. The discovery well in the Artesia field, Eddy County, drilled in 1923, gave impetus to active drilling in many areas. Since 1924 New Mexico has produced petroleum in commercial quantities and since 1930 the State has joined the ranks of the big produc¬ing States, being sixth or seventh in total production in recent years.Production by years. 1924 to 1940, inclusive, taken from annual figures in Bureau of Mines Minerals Yearbook, are given in table 1. The total production shown is 274,331,000 barrels. Andreas 3/ has published production figures for the year 1940 and a resume of all production to the end of 1940. Data from his report are presented in table 2 for each field sampled. The cumulative production, as given by Andreas, is 270,618,575 barrels."

A summary of the characteristics of motor gasoline for the winter 1951-52 is presented in table I, and for comparison, a similar summary for the winter 1950-51 is shown in table 2. Trends of some of the more important characteristics over a period of years are shown in figures 1 and 2. The results of this survey show that octane numbers have risen slightly since the summer of 1951 but are below the record levels of the winter of 1950-51. The fractions of a unit change since the summer preceding have resulted in the research and motor-method octane values being virtually the same as the figures for the survey of summer 1950. In volatility characteristics the winter gasolines have changed very little. Average Reid vapor pressures are 10.5 pounds for both grades of fuel compared to 10.4 and 10.5 pounds for premium and regular-price gasolines, respectively, of the winter of 1950-51.

This work was done to appraise the potential of titanium minerals in known titanium- bearing placer deposits and potential titanium- bearing placer areas in western Montana . Reconnaissance studies were made of more than 225 stream areas . Churn drilling and other placer exploration techniques were used in sampling eight deposits . The sampling results indicate that areas containing more than 10 pounds of ilmenite and other titanium- bearing black - sand minerals per cubic yard occur in the Bitterroot , Upper Clark Fork , and Jefferson River drainages . The chief source for the constituents of the black sands appears to be the Idaho batholith , and the highest black - sand concentrations are generally found near the source . Sample testing methods include gravity and magnetic separation and visual microscopic as well as chemical and radiometric analyses on deposits sampled in detail .

This is a report on work done and results obtained in a minerals exploration program conducted by the Bureau of Mines on the lead-zinc deposits in the Ross Basin-Lake Como district, San Juan County, Colo., in 1948, 1949, and 1950. Four large veins--the Seven Thirty, Red Rogers, Cashier-Shorts top-Canandaigua, and Queen Anne--and several narrow spur veins were explored at relatively shallow depths with core-drill holes. Thirty-nine holes, totaling 10,491.5 feet, were drilled, and the core samples were assayed at the Bureau of Mines station at Salt Lake City, Utah.

[IN COMPILING the table of analyses of this bulletin every available source of information was studied. These sources, as listed at the end of the table, were many and varied, and it believed that the tabulation gives the best general information obtainable. However, its known accuracy and completeness of coverage necessarily fall far short of published data on coals of the United States. A table of world production of coal and lignite, as and published by the Bureau of Mine, of world resources of coals, brown coal, and lignite, as published in the Yearbook of the World Power Conference, 1948, are included for convenience of the reader. Minimize failures or inefficiency in the operation of in situ mining wells. Approach The proper design, construction and development of wells are important to any in situ leaching operation. To permit cost-effective production from an underground ore body by leaching it in place, many wells are normally installed. Construction and maintenance costs increase with the number of wells, and poor construction and maintenance procedures result in production losses and negative environmental impacts, To minimize these losses and impacts, the Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation to determine the optimum in situ well construction and operating procedures for the minerals industry. Factors considered during the investigation included drilling equipment and procedures; types of well casing and grouting; completion methods, e.g, screening or perforation; and system maintenance. The data collected were used to prepare a manual that offers guidelines

To devise an economical, environmentally acceptable method for recycling scrap lead-acid batteries. Approach A combination electrorefining-electrowinning method for recycling lead metal and sludge from scrap batteries was devised which produces a 99.99 + percent pure lead product and eliminates the lead and sulfur oxide emissions that are the normal by-products of high-temperature smelting processes. How the Method Works Lead metal grids and lugs are separated from the battery sludge by washing and screening, and are melted and cast into anodes for electrorefining by the Betts process. The electrolyte used is fluosilicic acid, a large volume waste product generated during the production of phosphate fertilizer. During the electrorefining process, impurities in the anode are trapped and held in an adherent slime blanket on the surface as the anode dissolves while pure metallic lead is deposited on a lead cathode. The major problem in the past has been to recover the lead from the battery sludge which consists of approximately 60 percent lead sulfate, 21 percent lead, and 19 per-cent lead dioxide. A complete list of permissible mine equipment , tested and approved by the Bureau of Mines previous to January 1 , 1947 , was published as Information Circular 7432.27 A list of permissible mine equipment tested and approved by the Bureau of Mines during the calendar year 1947 was published as Information Circular 7465.3/ The present list supplements Information Circular 7432 and includes all of the equipment approved during the calendar years 1947 , 1948 , and 1949. It therefore supersedes Information Circular 7465. The list also includes an appendix ( No. 2 ) giving the symbol that must be used by every cable manufacturer in marking trailing cables that have passed the test for flame resistance as stated in the amendment of October 21 , 1947 , to Schedule 2E . The items are numbered to indicate the consecutive order in which each type of machine or device was approved in its particular classification . Thus , Information Circular 7432 showed six air compressors on the active list ; five additional compressors , Nos . 7 to 11 , inclusive , in this category were approved during 1947 , 1948 , and 1949 . Several items that were listed in Information Circular 7432 have been repeated in this circular where it was necessary to show that approvals of such equipment were extended to cover an additional voltage rating or other changes . Equipment listed in these circulars is approved by the Bureau of Mines only when found , upon inspection and test , to comply with minimum standards of safety as outlined in schedules prepared on the basis of many years of experience in dealing with safety problems of the coal -mining industry . The use of such equipment in mines known to be gassy , as well as in those that may become so , is earnestly recommended in the interest of safety . This circular is published so that the industry may be kept informed as to the many types of machines , devices , and lamps that are available for reducing explosion and other hazards incident to coal mining . This circular and Information Circular 7432 give the complete list of permissible mine equipment that is available under the various classifications .

The Bureau of Mines (Bureau) conducted a mineral resource investigation of the French Creek-Patrick Butte study area, in west central Idaho during 1989. No mineral resources or significant occurrences were identified. Other than small scale placer gold, no mineral production is known or recorded. At least 100 lode and 150 placer claims have been located in the study area. Most of the area was examined by ground or areal surveys, and 110 lode and 60 placer samples were taken. Four lode prospects were examined in detail, and all placer claim locations were sampled.

Since bauxite mining began in the Irwinton District, Wilkinson County, Ga., in 1912, it has been on a small scale, as most of the deposits of high-grade ore are small. The bauxite has a high silica content, and its use has been largely limited to the chemical industry. Drilling under this project did not disclose any bauxite deposits of commercial value: However, numerous holes penetrated high-alumina clay deposits, but no attempt was made to delimit them, as the project was solely an exploration for bauxite. Bauxite was first discovered near Irwinton in 1907. The district covers virtually all of Wilkinson County and extends into the adjoining counties of Washington, Baldwin, and Twiggs. Mining was begun in 1912 by the Republic Mining & Manufacturing Co. on the Honeycutt, Parker, and Daniel properties, which are 1.5 miles from Wriley on the old Irwinton to Milledgeville Road.

This report on the physical and chemical properties of typical crude oils of California is the 'eighth in a series on the producing districts of the United States. It includes discussion of results, tabulated data, and individual analyses of typical California crudes. Additional analyses of crude oils from the fields of Fresno, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, end Ventura Counties will be published later in another Serial of the Bureau, but the summary tabulations are presented here. The samples represented in this report were collected over a rather wide interval of tine, the early samples having been obtained during the fall of 1919, and the most recent ones dating from the summer of 1923. It is thought that the samples are fairly representative, both of the older settled production and of the new flush production of the southern California fields.

This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. By agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, identification of the items is confidential. It presents analytical data for 4,857 samples, representing the products of 103 companies. The samples were collected during June, July, and August 1955. As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered by this survey include those from both large and small suppliers. The data were obtained by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. A list of the National Motor Gasoline Survey reports published during the past 10 years is given on page 5.

This paper deals with the third phase of on extensive research on coal-mine ventilation factors. A comprehensive report of the entire work is in course of preparation, but abstracts of the various chapters are being prepared in order to make the results public as rapidly as possible. Parts I and II of this paper were issued Serial 2621 and Serial 2647 of the Bureau of Mines in July and October, 1924. They dealt with the resistance of unobstructed entry and the resistance caused by mine cars in untimbered entry. Description of the Tests After the resistance of unobstructed entry and of mine cars in untimbered entry had been determined by tests in the Experimental Mine, three different types of timbering were installed in the test section and the increased resistance caused by the timbering was determined.

At some coal mines, methane gas is released during raise drilling. At the request of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), U.S. Department of Labor, the Bureau of Mines conducted ventilation surveys at different raise drill sites to assess various methods of reducing methane concentration. The resulting data indicate that raise drill shaft cavities are ventilated by air compressors, vacuum pumps, auxiliary blower fans, and free intake air from the surface. The compressors, pumps, and fans operate simultaneously or separately. At the bottom of the shaft cavities, ventilation is controlled by regulators and airlocks. Methane is monitored, measured, and periodically sampled on the surface, at the bottom, and at different levels in the shaft cavities. Maximum concentration of 3.5 percent was measured in one shaft in West Virginia. Air velocity down the raise drill shafts is always very low, Maximum recorded air down the drill stem was 3,000 cfm, which can be increased by adding air compressors. The best way to ventilate shaft cavities is through the simultaneous use of air compressors and vacuum pumps. If the methane concentration cannot be reduced with additional compressors, then the inside diameter of the drill rod should be increased, or larger pilot hole drill bits should be used.
