"The Bureau of Mines receives many inquiries concerning favorable areas in which to prospect for gold, procedure to be followed, equipment required, and allied subjects. This circular has been prepared for use in reply to these inquiries.Interest in gold mining and prospecting for gold remains steady. From time to time many people take to the field to search for new gold deposits. A large percentage of them have had no previous experience in prospecting for lode gold; this paper has been written with the hope that it might assist these newcomers.A majority of the metal mines in the United States have been discovered by qualified prospectors who were searching for valuable minerals at the time. Chance, however, always has played a large part in finding mineral deposits. Some of the discoveries of the past were made by men on other errands, such as rounding up burros or hunting game. Accidental discoveries of ore bodies have been made in building roads and trails and in excavating for mine struc¬tures. Evidence of ore has been brought to the surface by burrowing animals and by ants; gold found in the craws of fowl has led to discoveries of deposits. Important discoveries have been made by men who had no knowledge of rocks or minerals; on the other hand, many ore bodies have been found by experienced prospectors, sometimes after hundreds of untrained men had already passed over the ground.The prospector who carries on his work diligently and intelligently is of course more likely to be rewarded for his efforts than the lazy or unintelligent worker; nevertheless, it is obvious that if valuable deposits are not present at the place being prospected none will be found. Conscientious and painstaking efforts to trace gold to its source usually disclose nothing more valuable than some narrow, unworkable seams; however, many deposits that were developed into profitable mines were found by this method of prospecting. Although some prospectors have made several lucky strikes, many others have spent their working lives searching for gold without finding anything worth while. Probably only one prospector out of several thousand ever finds anything worth developing. Moreover, only 1 out of every 300 or 400 properties developed becomes a profitable mine.Prospecting was begun in the Western States in the fifties as the miners looked for the source of gold found in placers. The search for gold has been continuous since that time; the number of prospectors in the field at any one time, however, has varied greatly. Except in some desert regions, practicallyall of the placer fields now being worked were discovered by old timers; more-over, most of the important gold districts were found by early prospectors. Important discoveries of lode mines, however, have been made from time to time. Most of the area in the mining regions of the West has been searched many times by prospectors, and nearly all of the easily found deposits have been located, but it is reasonable to expect that new gold mines will continue to be found. Most of the future discoveries undoubtedly will be of deposits that do not outcrop. Prospecting for such deposits requires considerable digging.Several important discoveries were made in 1934. One of these, the Rogers-Gentry gold mine at the edge of Antelope Valley in Los Angeles County, Calif., was found by an experienced prospector on an old patented homestead a number of miles from the nearest producing mine. The initial discovery at this mine was an iron-stained, decomposed, silicous limestone outcrop, with no vein structure evident at the surface, near a small, barren quartz outcrop and a water seep. Another discovery, the Silver Queen gold mine, in the same general region and near Mojave, Calif., was found by an experienced miner on an open fraction 400 by 1,400 feet in size between two old properties that were thought to have been worked out years ago. Results of a study are presented of the effect of low radial reinforcement pressure on the postfailure characteristics of two types of granite, a sandstone, and marble. The low radial reinforcement pressure is applied to the rock surface by a gooch rubber sleeve. The gooch rubber sleeve provides a radial pressure of less than 1 psi pressure to the rock surface. This method of support gives an average strength increase of approximately 8 percent to the fractured rock sample.

This is a discussion of the application of the zonal harmonic series to problems involving dipole sources in the vicinity of spherical boundaries. The application of a formal zonal-harmonic series solution to directly obtain numerical results involves two distinct problems: namely, the convergence of the series solution and the accurate calculation of the special functions involved in the series solution. Some interesting techniques will be introduced which help to improve the convergence properties of the series solution.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration, Pittsburgh Safety and Health Technology Center, Roof Control Division, is routinely involved in the evaluation of ground conditions in underground coal mines. Assessing the stability of mined areas and the compatibility of mining plans with existing conditions is essential to ensuring a safe working environment for mine workers at a given site. Since 1985, the Roof Control Division has successfully used the boundary-element method of numerical modeling to aid in the resolution of complex ground control problems. This paper presents an overview of the modeling methodology and details of techniques currently used to generate coal seam, rock mass, and gob backfill input data. A summary of coal and rock properties used in numerous successful evaluations throughout the United States is included, and a set of deterioration indices that can aid in the quantification of in-mine ground conditions and verification of model accuracy is introduced. Finally, a case study is detailed that typifies the complexity of mining situations analyzed and illustrates various techniques that can be used to evaluate prospective design alternatives.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has estimated the potential availability of copper from 204 mines and deposits in market economy countries (MEC's). The evaluated properties have demonstrated resources totaling 436.4 million metric tons of contained copper and account for 90% of the Bureau of Mimes reserve base for copper in market economy countries. Total recoverable MEC copper resources are 340.8 million metric tons, 69% of which is from producing mines and 31% from nonproducing mines and deposits. Chile had the lowest estimated average total cost from producing mines of W.48 per pound of recoverable copper at a 0% discounted cash-flow rate of return (DCFROR), with estimated average total costs ranging from $0.40 to $0.81 per pound. The estimated average total cost of production, per pound of copper, for producing mines in the United States amounts to $0.57 in January 1988 dollars at a Wo DCFROR, with estimated total costs ranging from $0.36 to $0.85 per pound. In both real and nominal terms, the United States has, on average, significantly lowered its copper production costs since 1981. Rationalization of the industry and significant increases in productivity have made a strong improvement in the competitiveness of the U.S. copper industry to the extent that the United States should no longer be considered as a marginal producer of copper.

Lower the respirable dust exposure of longwall shearer operators by keeping the dust cloud confined to the face. Approach Change the location of face-side machine cooling, water sprays. How It Works The dust breathed by the longwall shearer operator is usually produced by the shearer itself. The dust cloud originates at the face, and the exposure of the operator depends largely on how quickly this cloud spreads into the walkway. Water sprays on the shearer body can have a large effect on dust cloud spreading. Results to date indicate that sprays can help confine the dust cloud to the face if they are carefully placed. Otherwise they can make dust levels far worse. The worst offenders are often face-side sprays used to discharge cooling water from the cooling jackets of the shearer motors. These face-side sprays set up an air circulation pattern as illustrated in the drawing. Air induced by the sprays to flow towards the face, raises the air pressure in front of the face, which causes the air flow to turn and then move back over the shearer, bringing dust with it into the walkway.

"In cooperation with the New York and New Jersey State Bridge and Tunnel Commissions, the Bureau of Mines has just completed the construction of an experimental tunnel in the Bureau's experimental mine at Bruceton, Pa., near Pittsburgh, Pa. The purpose of this tunnel is to make a final study of the ventilation problems arising in the adequate ventilation of vehicular tunnels for automobiles and trucks, especially the 9000-foot tubes that are being designed. to handle the traffic between New York City and New Jersey under the Hudson River.Chief engineer, Clifford M. Holland, of the Tunnel Commissions has shown that there are three principal problems involved in planning the ventilation of this tunnel, namely - (1) The amount and composition of exhaust gases from motor vehicles; (2) The dilution necessary to render these exhaust gases harmless; (3) Determination of coefficients of airflow and horse-power required in ducts, bends and openings.Composition of automobile exhaust gases.The answer to the first problem was obtained by making road tests on 101 automobiles and trucks at the Pittsburgh experiment station. These machines were taken from service without any previous adjustment so that the composition and amount of the exhaust gas may be taken as representative of actual operating conditions prevailing in the tunnel. A report covering the results of these tests was submitted to the chief engineer of the Tunnel Commissions, on November 1, 1920, and 411 be published in the report of the commissions. Several papers a have also been published in the technical journals summarizing the important results as regards tunnel ventilation and also with reference to gasoline losses in present-day motor car operation due to the general use of unnecessarily rich mixtures"

A thermal oil-recovery experiment was conducted in the Venango First sand, Goodwill Hill oilfield, Warren County, Pa., about 10 miles northeast of Titusville. The Quaker State Oil Refining Corp., Bradford, Pa., performed the experiment with assistance from Sinclair Research, Inc., Tulsa, Okla., and the Federal Bureau of Mines. The Goodwill Hill field was discovered in 1885. Primary-production oper- ations continued until 1930 when an air-gas injection project, which is still in operation, was started. At the location of the combustion experiment, the reservoir is 400 feet deep and 30 feet thick, with wide permeability and porosity variations. The crude oil is typical Pennsylvania Grade paraffin- base oil with a gravity of 43.9° API and a viscosity of 4.55 cp at 60° F. The well pattern for the experiment consisted of 5 producing wells, enclosing an area of 1.28 acres, and a central ignition-injection well. An air-natural gas mixture was ignited in the ignition well on July 29, 1961. Ignition was followed by injection of air and natural gas at various rates. The experiment was suspended January 5, 1962, when it became evident that economic oil production could not be achieved. There was no conclusive evidence that self-sustained combustion was achieved or that combustion increased oil and water production. A slight increase in liquid production was attributed to stripping action caused by the air-injection rates, which were higher than those normally used during air-gas injection.

Using solution calorimetry, the following heats of reaction were determined: (1) NaCN(c) + 1/Cu20(c) + 129H20(l) ? CuCN(c) + NaOH?128.5H2O ?H = -13.44±0.10 kcal/mole, (2) HCN(2) + NaOH?128.5H20 ? NaCN(c) + 129.5H20(l) ? = -2.52±0.02 kcal/mole. From these reactions, the heats of formation for CuCN(c) and HCN(2) were calculated to be 22.7±0.4 kcal/mole and 24.9±0.4 kcal/mole, respectively. Reaction 2 was made to check the consistency of literature values for heats of formation of HCN and NaCN. Adiabatic calorimetric measurements between 10° and 400° K showed the entropy and heat capacity of CuCN(c) to be 21.51±0.06 eu and 14.58±0.04 cal/mole deg, respectively, at 298° K. A broad anomaly in the heat capacity was found in the temperature range 285°-320° K. The heat of transition associated with this anomaly was less than 1 cal/mole, the sensitivity of the measurements.

Analytical results for nahcolite, dawsonite, total extractable alumina, and oil yield are presented for samples representing Green River Formation oil shales in the saline section of two cores from Colorado's Piceance Creek basin. Analyses are also reported for samples extending the analyzed section of Colorado corehole No. 3 beyond that reported previously. These data permit evaluation of the deposit for possible production of three coproducts--shale oil, alumina, and sodium carbonates--from the saline section of the formation at these sampled points.

The Bureau of Mines and Kaiser Steel Corp. are cooperatively demonstrating the shield-type roof support in the longwall mining of a 10-1/2-foot-thick coalbed at the York Canyon mine near Raton, N. Mex. As part of the demonstration, the shield supports have been successfully and safely moved from a completed longwall face to a new longwall face. When these shield supports were moved in 1976 they were the largest and heaviest longwall support system in use in U.S. coal mines. The shield supports, preparations for moving them, the actual move, and installation at the new face are discussed.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop a procedure for removing excess iron from representative samples of bauxite ore from the Quapaw deposit of American Cyanamid Co., Saline County, Ark., in order to produce a beneficiated ore suitable for use in the alum industry, At the request of the sponsoring company, the samples were reduction-roasted at 800° C. and then magnetically separated. Although some rejection of iron was effected under these conditions, the general results were not satisfactory, A much more successful procedure, from the standpoints of both rejection of iron and recovery of alumina, consisted of a short (l5-minute), low-temperature (400° C.) oxidizing roast, followed by a 2-minute interval in a hydrogen atmosphere, then cooling to room temperature, and, finally, high-intensity magnetic separation to remove the iron.

Tests were conducted in the Pocahontas No. 4 coalbed in southern West Virginia to determine if successful degasification techniques, developed during an earlier study in the Pittsburgh coalbed, would be effective in removing methane from those usually more gaseous coals. Specially designed long-hole drilling equipment and Bureau of Mines continuous recording devices were used to measure the quantity and methane content of the ventilating air during the investigation. Infusions were made with water at normal waterline pressures ranging from 200 to 220 psi or at pump pressures ranging from 400 to 650 psi. Results of the tests showed that methane emissions from free-flow bleeder holes were as much as 131 cfm. Infusions of some of the holes increased the methane emission from other holes and from the exposed coal surfaces near the working areas as much as 1,540 cfm. The methane content in the main return-air currents after infusion was reduced more than 86 percent of the amount recorded before tests were made.

This report analyzes mine fires for all U.S. underground and surface coal mining categories by state and 2-year time periods during 1990-1999. Risk rate values are derived, and ignition source, methods of fire detection and suppression, and other variables are examined. The data were derived from Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) mine fire accident publications and verbal communications with mine personnel. The analysis will provide the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, MSHA, and the mining industry with a better understanding of the causes and hazards associated with mine fires and will form a basis for future fire research programs.

The Rainy Creek deposits lie at the western base of the Kilbuck Mountains, about So miles southeast of Bethel, in southwestern Alaska. The deposits were brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines by placer miners on Rainy Creek after cinnabar concentrates were recovered by their gold-mining operations. In August 1947 the Bureau excavated 1,500 feet of dozer trenches totaling 2,547 cubic yards. Further hand trenching in the bottoms of the dozer trenches on the surface totaled 1,440 linear feet, or 40 cubic yards. Nineteen samples were taken for analyses.

To improve operational effectiveness of enclosed cab filtration systems. Background Enclosed operator cabs are widely used on mobile excavation equipment in the mining and construction industries. They protect the operator from bad weather, noise, and airborne dusts. The inside cab environment usually must be kept at very low dust concentrations because of quartz dust generated from the excavation of silica-bearing rock. Most cab designs achieve heating and air conditioning effectiveness by recirculating most of the interior cabin airflow, with a smaller portion of the outside air added to the cab as makeup air. Both the recirculated cab airflow and exterior makeup air added to the cabin should be efficiently filtered, with the makeup air positively pressurizing the cab interior. Ideally, operator cab air filters should provide at least 99% capture efficiency for dust particles as small as 0.3-pm aerodynamic diameters. These higher efficiency air filters provide good dust control for the equipment operator, but tend to accumulate dust more quickly than lower efficiency air filters.

In 1972, the Bureau of Mines developed a direct-method test for measuring the gas content of virgin coal core samples for coal mine health and safety considerations. Since that time, approximately 1,500 coal samples from more than 250 coalbeds in 17 States have been collected for gas content determination. The gas content data, when combined with geologic and engineering studies, can be used as a basis for a preliminary estimate of mine ventilation requirements, and to determine if methane drainage in advance of mining should be considered. The data are also critical in delineating coalbed methane resources and in utilization feasibility studies. This report makes the Bureau's extensive data base of gas content data more readily available to the coal and gas industries. The data are presented in tabular form, alphabetically by coalbed name and by State. The components of the total gas content (lost, desorbed, and residual gas) are given, Location (State and county), sample depth, coalbed or formation name, and coal rank are included for geographic and geologic identification.

This report presents results of a cooperative research project between the U.S. Bureau of Mines and Beth Energy Mines, Inc. Four coreholes (two before mining and two after mining) were drilled at a longwall mine operating in the Lower Kittanning Coalbed to obtain coal and rock samples from overlying strata to determine their gas content at various times in the mining cycle. The results of those tests indicate that 91 pct of the gas removed from the overlying strata came from coalbeds. Material balance calculations were made to compare the volume of gas produced both from gob gas vent holes drilled on the panel and gas removed by the mine's ventilation system with the volume of gas removed from strata directly overlying the panel to a height of 275 ft. This analysis indicates that only 40 pct of the total gas produced from the panel actually came from the strata directly overlying the panel. The remaining volume of gas production probably migrated to the Iongwall gob from overlying, and perhaps underlying, strata immediately adjacent to the panel and perhaps from greater distances downdip because of the establishment of a long-term pressure gradient in the study area.

The highly-mineralized 43,700-ha Rapid River study area, on the southeast side of Hells Canyon Wilderness and west of the village of Cuprum, in Adams County, western-Idaho, was investigated in 1992 by the USBM (U.S. Bureau of Mines) in conjunction with its Idaho Land Assessment Program. The 1992 study updated data gathered during the USBM's 1974-76 Wilderness investigation. The studies consisted of the evaluation of 61 mineralized sites and the estimations of tonnages, grades, and minability of these sites. Most of the sites studied are in two mineralized locales--Windy Ridge and Jackley Mountain. A few isolated sites, peripheral to the two locales, were also examined. The 61 sites contained more than 340 mine and prospect workings, including about 10,300 meters (34,000 feet) of underground workings, plus 134 drill holes.
