Most coal plants must run under conditions of varying feed conditions or are asked to produce qualities different from that used in the design. This can cause overloaded conditions as the ?bottlenecks? within the plant, depending on plant operation or as the feed changes. During plant design, geological information can be used to determine washability envelopes and blends that may be expected. Historical data can also be used to develop a size distribution envelope as well as to assign reasonable models for each of the unit processes. In operation, a plant can be sampled to determine changes and to refine process models. The information obtained can then be used in an accurate simulation to define how the plant can deal with the changing environment. This paper uses Limn: The Flowsheet Processor to simulate the coal plant in detail and will produce an accurate model, in terms of equipment sizing as well as water, medium, and solids balance, for each change in feed condition. It will show examples of running the simulation through complete density and size ranges and will determine the equipment required to address each part of the performance envelope.

SYNOPSIS The paper gives a background to the water hazards of the so-called West Wits Line and refers to some geological aspects of the Wonderfontein Valley in which the West Driefontein mine property lies. It describes the precautions taken against flooding during shaft sinking, development and stoping; these include cover hole drilling with cementation, provision for water storage in worked-out areas, installation of water tight bulkhead doors and pumping capacity well in excess of the mine's normal requirements. The plan of campaign adopted after the inrush took place is explained and the reorganization and expansion of pumping arrangements are discussed. When it became clear that the only means of saving the mine was to construct plugs to isolate the inrush while still maintaining all emergency pumping measures, the work was put in hand with the utmost dispatch. In considering the design of the plugs a number of major factors had to be taken into account. The most vital was the need for speed which was complicated by difficulty of access to the plug sites because of the huge volumes of water flowing in the drives. How this and other factors affecting plug design and construction, leakage problems, sequence of operations and final closure of the valves, were overcome is detailed in the paper. INTRODUCTION The inrush of water into the West Driefontein mine, the biggest gold producer in the world, which began on 26th October, 1968 and continued unabated for 23 days before the flood was stemmed, was unprecedented in the history of mining. Also unprecedented were the tremendous efforts and organization which made it possible to bring the situation under control and so save the mine from being lost for a matter of years. BACKGROUND Before going into details of how the situation was brought under control it is appropriate to consider the background to the event. The water problem on the so-called West Wits Line has been recognized for many years. As far back as 1912 the Pullinger Shaft, situated in the centre of what is now the Venterspost mine property, had to be abandoned because there were no means then available of coping with the large quantity of water encountered. To appreciate what vast quantities of water were involved, it helps to refer to some geological aspects of the Wonderfontein valley in which the West Driefontein property lies. The narrow tabular Witwatersrand gold-bearing beds, which dip at about 25 degrees towards the south, are overlain by a surface layer of dolomite which reaches a maximum thickness of some 4,000 ft at West Driefontein. A number of vertical syenitic dykes intersect the valley more or less at right angles to its course (Fig. 1). These dykes are about 150 ft thick on average and are spaced at about eight-mile intervals in the West Driefontein area. They penetrate both the dolomite and the Witwatersrand beds and as they are impervious to water they divide the valley into a series of large underground water compartments.

Froth flotation is well-established and efficient in the selective separation of valuable particles from unwanted material with sizes ranging from 10 μm to 200 μm. However, when it comes to the separation of ultrafine particles (< 10 μm) there are still some challenges, or rather opportunities. This research aims at developing a method for the separation of ultrafine particles based on multiple particle properties. Amongst such properties are wettability, morphology (shape or roughness) and size with applications not only in mineral processing but in general chemical engineering. In this study, three differently shaped fractions are used as valuables for testing: spherical particles, elongated particles and irregularly shaped particle fragments; together with ultrafine magnetite as the gangue material, in order to investigate the effect of particle morphology on ultrafine particle flotation, as well as wettability, which is varied by esterification using alcohols. Flotation tests are carried out using a novel flotation device that was designed especially for the flotation of ultrafine particles, combining advantages from machine-type froth flotation and column flotation. The results showed that, in contrast to previous studies, recoveries for ultrafine spheres were higher than for ultrafine fragments for all wettability conditions, and hydrophobisation generally increased particle recoveries for said morphologies. Tests using fibres showed different behaviour as hydrophobisation had negative effects on their recovery, despite increased selectivities and kinetics. These findings suggest that apart from influences of particle properties within the suspension zone, their effects on the froth characteristics should be studied in more depth. "In this investigation, the phosphorus distribution ratios in the CaF2 system and B2O3 system dephosphorization slags for high-phosphorus hot metal pretreatment were measured by an indirect method under laboratory conditions. Firstly, the phosphorus distribution ratio between liquid slag and solid iron was measured, and then the phosphorus distribution ratio between liquid slag and hot metal was calculated. Phosphorus capacity was calculated in terms of the composition and optical basicity of the slag. Dephosphorization slag was also studied by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive analysis, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The experimental results show that the phosphorus capacity of the B2O3 slag system is much greater than that of the CaF2 system. It is demonstrated thatB2O3 can completely replace CaF2 as fluxing agent for high-phosphorus hot metal pretreatment. With CaF2 as fluxing agent, the phosphorus capacity increases with increasing CaO content in the slag, but the phosphorus distribution ratio decreases. B2O3, when used as fluxing agent, can react with high melting point phases such as 2CaO·SiO2 and 3CaO·P2O5 in the slag to form new phases with low melting points such as 11CaO·B2O3.4SiO2, 2CaO·B2O3.SiO2, and Ca9.93(P5.84B0.16O24) (B0.67O1.79), thereby acting as a fluxing agent. When the ratio of w(B2O3)/w(CaO) is 0.16, the phosphorus distribution ratio reaches its maximum value, that is, the dephosphorization ability of the slag is at its maximum. IntroductionAs international iron ore prices continue to rise, the development of China's steel industry is facing a lot of pressure. Against this background, development and utilization of domestic high-phosphorus iron ore resources is particularly important. When highphosphorus iron ore is used in ironmaking, the phosphorus content in the hot metal can reach 0.35% or more, and the hot metal must be pretreated. For hot metal with 0.08–0.10% dissolved phosphorus, the traditional hot metal dephosphorization pretreatment technologies are relatively mature. However, when using these methods to dephosphorize hot metal containing 0.35% P or more, the amount of dephosphorization slag can reach 100–150 kg per ton of hot metal. Furthermore, the traditional dephosphorization methods require the addition of large amounts of CaF2 as fluxing agent, and this results in high fluoride levels in the dephosphorization slag. The fluorine in the slag can partially dissolve in water and thereby causes high fluoride concentration in the water and soil. Once the fluoride is absorbed by humans or animals, it can result in toxic effects on the central nervous system and myocardium. In addition, fluoride can accumulate in the environment, and thereby pose a health risk to animals and humans through the food chain (Li, 2007; Liu, Wang, and Dong, 2011, Diao, 2013). The objective of this research is to replace CaF2 with B2O3 as fluxing agent while achieving the expected goals of hot metal pretreatment."

The pumping of water from mines in the Central Witwatersrand by J. A. TYSER, Pr. Eng., B.Sc. (Min.) (Associate) This paper describes a system for the removal of underground water in the mines of the Central Witwatersrand, some of which are defunct. The water is pumped by a pump station on 24 level at E.R.P.M. to a surface lime plant and then to a surface treatment plant, where it is treated so that it meets the specification of the Department of Water Affairs relating to the deposition of water in public streams.

The objective of this paper is to present some results of laboratory experiments during the investigation of stress-strain characteristics of Carboniferous sandstones at dynamic loading. During these experiments increasing frequency and the constant amplitude of dynamic loading and/or constant frequency at different amplitude of dynamic loading were applied. Der Gegenstand dieses Artikels ist, irgendeine von Ergebnissen von Laborexperimenten bei Messung der Spannungs- und Deformationscharakteristik der Karbonsandsteine bei ihrer dynamischen Belastung vorzustellen. Im Laufe diesen Experimenten wurden entweder anwachsende Frequenzen bei konstanter Amplitude der dynamischen Belastung, oder gleiche Frequenzen bei variabler Amplitude der dynamischen Belastung verwendet. The effect of high solids concentration and coarse particle sizes (d50 ranges 90?300 µm) on the viscosity of a suspension of water and silica sand was investigated. The experiments were designed to include conditions that have been tested by other authors and those encountered in the operation of tumbling mills. The rheological data was measured using a tube rheometer with operating pseudo shear rates of up to 1500 s-1. The rheograms obtained depicted dilatant behaviour. The Otswald-de Waele, Bingham, Herschel-Buckley and Casson models were fitted to the experimental data. The Herschel-Buckely model, which approximates the yield point and gives an indication of the shear thinning or shear thickening behaviour of the suspension, was found to provide the best description of the flow curves for all slurries. The Herschel-Buckely model was then used to determine the apparent viscosity of all the tests. The apparent viscosity and yield stress increased with solids concentration and particle size at the different pseudo shear rates. The increase in slurry viscosity with solids concentration was attributed to increased frequency of particle-particle interactions. The increase in slurry viscosity with particle size was attributed to increased inertial effects. At low shear rates the sand slurry exhibited shear thinning behaviour for all solids concentrations. At higher shear rates above 1000 s-1the high solids concentration suspensions exhibited a transition from shear thinning to a shear thickening behaviour.

Pert, and how Pert techniques can be used in modern mine management By E. J. Boome, A. C. Schmidt C.A. (S.A.) This paper covers the stages of planning required to be performed and the implementation of the plan from grass roots to the partial completion of the sinking of a mine shaft system. The various steps involved in the planning are also examined in some detail. The experience gained in this project and the conclusions reached convince the authors that Pert Planning is a valuable aid to top management.

The relationship between population growth and steel consumption since the beginning of the twentieth century is indicated, reference being made to the increasing capacity of production units and the resultant increased pollution in the same area. The need for the control of fugitive emissions with its associated high cost is pointed out. There is a direct relationship between energy and pollution, and examples are given of several improvements that have been made to achieve better energy usage and reduced pollution. Several practical examples of air-pollution control systems are described as applicable to the main metallurgical steel processes of today. In conclusion, reference is made to the fact that, with the improvements attained in reducing pollution, the public will not tolerate a decline in the standards already attained. Environmental control and better energy utilization will continue to be important aspects of steel-plant design and operation.

The gold deposits of the farms Lisbon and Berlyn in the Eastern Transvaal by V. C. H. R. BRERETON* (Visitor) This paper describes the discovery and recovery of gold, over a period dating back to the 1870s. on the farms Lisbon and Berlyn, situated approxim ately 1I km north-east of Pilgrims Rest. where mining ceased in July 1971. 99 years after gold was first discovered in the Pilgrims Rest and Sabie districts. Included in the paper are accounts of the discovery and mining operations of the Lisbon-Berlyn Company from 1884 to 1890. The operations of small companies and syndicates. the superficial winning of gold by diggers, and the encouraging reports of four mining engineers in 1890 are also mentioned.

"In open pit dozer bulk push operations, the material left resting against the highwall after blasting poses an issue. This is because dozers cannot physically get in behind the waste to begin the bulk pushing process. Instead, an excavator can be used to side-cast this waste for the dozers to access. An alternative technique is to have the dozers ‘side-cut’ the material, which involves the dozers running parallel to the wall, digging out the material, and eventually rotating their blades to begin bulk pushing. Industry practices suggest the latter technique is less productive and economical than using an excavator. However, such excavator sidecasting ‘economic viability’ assumes that smaller/ancillary type excavators are used (i.e. less than 23 m3 bucket capacity). So, what happens if some mine sites are restricted to using relatively larger excavators (> 23 m3 bucket) that are preferred for higher priority digging tasks? When can they avoid using their excavator? This paper explores multiple scenarios that have been designed and developed to simulate data results, which identify conditions in which the dozer side-cutting technique becomes more economically viable than excavator side-casting in terms of decreased unit cost per loose cubic metre. IntroductionOptimizing the cost of waste removal operations is important for the profitability of opencast coal mines. In the past decade, dozer bulk pushing has emerged and taken over from traditional waste removal operations such as dragline and truck-and-shovel methods at various sites around the world (Beatty, 1994). In a typical bulk push operation, once the bench has been blasted, waste is left resting against the highwall, which can either be cleared using a loading unit or by having the dozers ‘side-cut’ the highwall.Dozers perform most effectively when slot dozing side-by-side, perpendicular to the highwall. However, when dozers are required to remove material off the highwall, they must push parallel to the highwall, rather than perpendicular, hence ‘side-cutting’ the material to ensure a clean face. While dozer sidecutting is possible, it has been found that the majority of mine sites use a loading unit in this situation to avoid dozer inefficiency. Other perceived issues with dozer side-cutting include higher maintenance requirements and safety risks to dozer operators working in close proximity to the highwall."

A high volume of slimes which are separated out during the mining of heavy mineral sands has a high environmental impact and results in great capital as well as operational expenses. The presence of clay minerals drastically increases the slimes volume that needs to be catered for due to its low settling capability as well as swelling characteristics. By adding coagulants in the form of cations and organics, one can improve the settling rate of the minerals as well as the degree of solid bed compaction. The addition of flocculant, which is currently used in industry to improve settling rate, is detrimental to solid bed compaction. By combining the cations and flocculant one can dramatically improve the solid bed compaction. This combination is, however, detrimental to the settling rate of kaolinite-rich slimes but improves the settling rate of smectite-rich slimes. Organics can also be used to produce a clear supernatant and improve the settling rate.

These effects were investigated in batch flotation studies, and by the measurement of rest and pulp potentials. At Iow additions of sulphurous acid as the pH regulator, flotation rate increased with increasing concentrations of dissolved oxygen. The recovery of chalcopyrite dropped significantly below a pH value of about 6,5 at 25 p.p.m. of dissolved oxygen, and below a pH value of about 6 at a dissolved-oxygen concentration of 8,2 p.p.m. The rest and pulp potentia Is measured indicated that dixanthogen is the dominant species formed on chalcopyrite surfaces during flotation with sodium ethyl xanthate. The results suggested that the same species might have formed on galena surfaces in the pulp after the ore had been milled in a ceramic mill under nitrogen. Increased additions of sulphurous, sulphuric, and hydrochloric acids increased the rest potentia Is, while the addition of sodium sulphite decreased these potentials.

The 2500 copies of the questionnaire sent out elicited 228 responses, which represents a return of 8,8 per cent. The number of responses received from overseas was 24, i.e., approximately 10 per cent of the total. The following is an analysis of the responses received.

A new Scramble has hit the African continent. This Scramble has many drivers: the 1978 Deng Xiao Ping liberalizations in China; the 1989 collapse of the Soviet empire; the ICT revolution; the ease of global communications. The underlying dynamic is the end of the bipolar world of the Cold War and its replacement with multipolarity. According to HSBC (2011), in 2050 China will be the world?s largest economy, with India number 3 and Brazil number 7. Russia will be 15th (below its old rival, Turkey). South Africa maybe ranked 30th, yet has been invited to join the exclusive (BRIC) club. One has to ask, why? It is sad to note how low South Africa is assessed to be?currently it is around number 24 in the world; the reason for the fall is that the HSBC model includes population growth, and it is in this domain that South Africa is a loser, being constrained by the impact of HIV/AIDS on its life expectancy. The original four BRIC nations include the factory of the world (China), the garden of the world (Brazil), the gas station of the world (Russia), and the back office of the world (India). South Africa comes to the club both as jeweller of the world and as gatekeeper. China, Brazil, and Russia all have considerable expertise in mining exploration, extraction, and processing.

This paper, which adopts a philosophical approach, attempts to analyse the contribution that the computer is capable of making in geological analysis, financial evaluation, and mine project control. Also examined are some reasons for non-utilization of these capabilities. As with most computer associated problems, the cause is primarily human and not mechanical. The paper gives one numerical example of the analysis of geological data and one of the evaluation of mine-design data. The values used in the examples are intended only to emphasize certain points and are not necessarily reproducible.

Job evaluation and the changing wage pattern by D. L. VAN COLLER, B.A.(Cape Town), M.A., B.Litt.{Oxon.) (Visitor) This paper sets out to show how changing forces are affecting the techniques that have been used in the evaluation of Black jobs on gold mines in the Anglo American Group since the introduction of job evaluation in 1961. Initially, job evaluation was essentially a management tool designed to differentiate jobs in a limited skill spectrum and thereby permit the establishment of a &apos;many stepped&apos; job ladder for Black employees to climb. With the changing wage pattern, job evaluation is becoming an industrialrelations tool aimed at recognizing the skill and effort contributed by the worker so that the pay relationships between jobs are seen to be equitable by the employees.
