This paper describes how a 'mined out' coalfield is being mined successfully by opencast methods. The coalfield is that at New Vaal Colliery, which is situated in the Vereeniging-Vanderbijlpark-Sasolburg industrial complex. Al three coal seams at New Vaal had been mined previously, when the better-quality coal had been removed. The coal-preparation plant at New Vaal, which is also described, supplies coal to the 3600 MW Lethabo Power Station. The Colliery has been designed to supply 600 million sales tons of coal over its forty-year life.

Two detonation models, IDeX for ideal VOD and CPeX for non-ideal VOD, were used to predict the velocities of detonation (VOD) of five explosives: ANFO, a bulk emulsion, and three repumpable emulsions (R100 Gold, R100 Diamond, and R105). The theoretical VODs were compared with the in-hole VODs of the explosives, and the predicted and actual values were found to be within experimental error for ANFO and the bulk emulsion. The results were not consistent for the repumpable emulsions. The discrepancies can be explained as being due to variations in mining and loading practices. The results show that the detonation models can be effective tools in predicting the behaviour of explosives in different diameters and rock confinements, provided that the user is aware of the factors that can affect the optimal usage of explosives and equipment.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the factors which affect the performance of the loading and hauling fleet and also find possible solutions to eliminate these factors, so that the daily tonnages required could be produced .This is due to the high demand of manganese required by clients. The investigation strongly focuses on the performances of the three 777D Caterpillar trucks and the R984 C Liebherr Litronic Hydraulic Excavator. In the content of the study, these machines are used to remove and move the low grade manganese (also known as the top cut overburden) in order to expose the high grade manganese from north pit to dump 4. The objectives of the project were to determine the actual performance of the loading and hauling fleet per shift, compare the actual and the theoretical performance and identify areas that need to be improved. To achieve the goals set for the project, a number of activities were carried out. ?Perform a time study to compare the performance of the loading and hauling fleet with the manufacturer specifications ?Match the equipments analysis for Loading and hauling ?Road conditions analysis ?Rolling resistance and Road Gradients analysis ?Operating cost analysis.

The work described here attempts to underscore the importance of the time lag between the end of a loading phase and the instant a winding drum begins its acceleration phase. Traces generated from a computer-simulation model show that the amplitude of the stress oscillations occurring in mine hoisting cable during the constant velocity-of-ascent phase is a direct result of the temporal sequence employed between the loading and the raising phases. While current and early literature indicates that extensive work has been undertaken on the isolated effects of these two independent sequences, the literature does not appear to contain any documented evidence to suggest an optimal control or interfacing between these two dynamic regimes.

Deep gold exploration such as is used for Witwatersrand gold deposits is both expensive and time-consuming. This paper provides quantitative guidelines as to the economic optimum number of boreholes and deflections within each borehole for a certain reef characterized by its variability pattern and depth below surface in order to maximize the level of confidence for a fixed drilling budget or to minimize the total drilling cost for a given level of confidence. Portions of the Basal, Vaal, and Elsburg Reefs that show a wide range of variability (sample logarithmic variances of 0,63, 1,05, and 2,06 respectively) are examined at depths below surface ranging from 1000 m to 4000 m over a simulated mining property covering 7000 ha (7000 m by 10000 m). It is concluded that four intersections per borehole are optimum in al the cases considered, which cover the majority of current Witwatersrand exploration, with the exception of the highly variable Elsburg Reef at depths of 1000 m and 2000 m, where boreholes with one and two intersections respectively should be preferred.

Currency fluctuations affect the rand revenues of all exports of mineral commodities, as well as influencing their price on local markets. Of the more than 50 mineral commodities produced by South Africa, about 75 per cent derive 40 to 100 per cent of their revenues from exports. . Although supply and demand are largely beyond its control, management can maximize its revenues despite fluctuating overseas prices and exchange rates by using the right market at the right time. Management can operate in the futures markets, which involve a specific commitment to deliver a specific quantity of a standardized commodity at a set time in the future and at a price that is determined on a futures exchange in open auction; or management can use the options market, in which a producer can insure against the risk of a falling price by taking out a put-option, which gives the holder the right (but not the obligation) to sell the commodity at a stated price at an agreed time in the future. In the forward markets, management has three available tools; forward currency transactions, trading of currency options, and money market hedges. Revenues, currencies of exchange earnings, purchasing power of the rand, and world price trends are shown in over 40 diagrams and tables for the main mineral commodities produced in South Africa.

Multiple-pass hot-strip-rolling schedules of carbon steels and niobium-microalloyed ferrite-pearlite steels were simulated on a Gleeble 1500 thermomechanical test apparatus. The effects of finishing temperature, coiling temperature, and chemical composition on the as-deformed ferrite grain size and hardness of the steels were determined. Low finishing temperatures and low coiling temperatures both contributed to ferrite grain refinement. Good agreement was found for the microstructure and hardness of the steels between the as-ruled condition and the results obtained from rolling simulations. The progress of recrystalization and precipitation was followed from examinations of the flow-stress curves during the hot-rolling simulations. The flow-stress behaviour during the finishing passes was consistent with the resulting changes in final ferrite grain size. It was found that the no-recrystalization temperature, TNR, is raised by increased additions of niobium.

SYNOPSIS The adverse effect of acidic mine drainage derived from gold and coal mining operations on the quality of receiving waters is described, together with measures to be taken to counteract this pollution. The mineral load and the toxic effects from metallurgical and metal finishing industries are also considered. Attention is drawn to water conservation aspects.

Performance testing is often used by project owners and financiers to provide protection from, or assessment of, technical aspects of project design, procurement, construction and commissioning. The performance tests can range from comprehensive performance warranties relating to process performance and production in the case of lump sum turn key (LSTK) projects to less onerous demonstration tests for cost reimbursable contracts. This paper will discuss performance testing from both the contractor's and owner's perspectives and focuses on: ? when performance tests are required, ? what type of performance test/warranty is optimum for each type of project, and ? how project performance should be evaluated. The requirement for performance testing can be driven by the project financiers, particularly in the case of smaller resource development companies. In such cases, differentiation between owner's risk and contractor's risk can become contentious. At the other end of the spectrum, larger mining houses may choose to heavily influence the engineering and design process with the contractor supplying services on a reimbursable basis. In that case, the performance testing process is often limited to demonstration tests that validate performance for the owner's corporate governance requirements. This paper was prepared due to the lack of published benchmarking of performance testing and the resultant differences in expectations between a contractor and a project owner that often surface late in the contract negotiation process. The paper provides a checklist of requirements for both the owner and the contractor that may be used to provide `common purpose' early in the contract negotiation process.

The following notes have been compiled to assist authors in the preparation of papers for presentation to the Institute and for publication in the Journal. All papers must meet the standards set by the Council of the Institute, and for this purpose all papers are referred to at least two referees appointed by Council. STANDARDS FOR ACCEPTANCE To merit consideration papers should conform to the high standards which have been established for publication over many years. Papers on research should contain matter that is new, interpretations that are novel or of new significance and conclusions that cast a fresh light on old ideas. Descriptive papers should not be a repetition of well-known practices or ideas but should incorporate developments which would be of real interest to technical men and of benefit to the mining and metallurgical Industry. In some cases a well prepared review paper can be of value, and will be considered for publication. All papers and particularly research papers no matter how technical the subject, should be written with the average reader of the Journal in mind, to ensure wide interest. The amount of textbook material included in a contribution should be the minimum essential to the argument. The length of a paper is not the criterion of its worth and it should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with the lucid presentation of the subject. Only in very exceptional circumstances should a paper exceed 15 pages of the Journal (15 000 words, if there are no tables or diagrams). Six to ten pages is more normal. NOTE: Papers in the Journal are printed in 10 point type, which is larger than the 8 point type used on this page. For special publications Council may decide on page sizes smaller than A4 used for this Journal. Proof correction: Galley proofs are sent to authors for the correction of printers' errors and not for the purpose of making alterations and additions which may be expensive. Should an author make alterations which are considered excessive, he may be required to pay for them. Standardsymbols as laid down in British Standard 1219C shoulrl be used. SYNOPSIS It is most important that the synopsis should provide a clear outline of the contents of the paper, the results obtained and the author's conclusions. It should be written concisely and in normal rather than abbreviated English and should not exceed 250 words. While the emphasis is on brevity this should not be laboured to the extent of leaving out important matter or impairing intelligibility. Summaries simplify the task of abstractors and therefore should present a balanced and complete picture. It is preferable to use standard rather than proprietary terms. FOOTNOTES AND REFERENCES Footnotes should be used only when they are indispensable. In the typescript they should appear immediately below the line to which they refer and not at the foot of the page. References should be indicated by super-script, thus. . .1 . . .2. Do not use the word Bibliography. When authors cite publications of other societies or technical and trade journals, titles should be abbreviated in accordance with the standards adopted by this Journal. Paragraphs: A decimal system of numbering paragraphs may be used when the paper is long and complicated and there is a need for frequent reference to other parts of the paper. Proof correction: Galley proofs are sent to authors for the correction of printers' errors and not for the purpose of making alterations and additions which may be expensive. Should an author make alterations which are considered excessive, he may be required to pay for them. Standard symbols as laid down in British Standard 1219C should be used. SYNOPSIS It is most important that the synopsis should provide a clear outline of the contents of the paper, the results obtained and the author's conclusions. It should be written concisely and in normal rather than abbreviated English and should not exceed 250 words. While the emphasis is on brevity this should not be laboured to the extent of leaving out important matter or impairing intelligibility. Summaries simplify the task of abstractors and therefore should present a balanced and complete picture. It is preferable to use standard rather than proprietary terms. FOOTNOTES AND REFERENCES Footnotes should be used only when they are indispensable. In the typescript they should appear immediately below the line to which they refer and not at the foot of the page. References should be indicated by super-script, thus. . .1 . . .2. Do not use the word Bibliography. When authors cite publications of other societies or technical and trade journals, titles should be abbreviated in accordance with the standards adopted by this Journal. Samples (15 to 20 g) of pre-calcined Mamatwan manganese ore or pure Mn 304 smaller than 48 mesh were reacted at temperatures in the range 1000 to 1300°C with samples of spectrographically pure graphite smaller than 325 mesh. Samples (1 g) of ore or pure Mn02 smaller than 48 mesh were reacted at temperatures of 1000 and 1200°C with pure graphite fines in argon, with graphite in carbon, .'1onoxide, and with carbon monoxide alone. In each case, the loss of mass as a function of time was recorded with a hermobalance. The rate and degree of reduction were found to increase with additions of carbon and with increasing temperature up to 1300oC, when they reached their maximum. The shape of the reduction curves, together with the results obtained from examination of the products of reaction by microscopy and X-ray diffraction, were used as the basis for a postulated reduction mechanism. Some details are given of an initial kinetic model that was used to verify the proposed mechanism. It was found that the reduction of Mamatwan ore by graphite at temperatures in the range 1000 to 1300°C occurs in two stages: (i) an initial stage during which the higher oxides of manganese are rapidly reduced to MnO with concurrent formation of CaMn2O4 and (ii) a longer stage during which CaMn2O4 and MnO are reduced to carbides by carbon dissolved in the ferromanganese phase.

The prereduction and smelting characteristics of UG-2 ore were studied and compared with those of Winterveld chromite ore. The UG-2 ore proved more reducible, and substantial prereduction (over 70 per cent reduction after 30 minutes at 1250oC) was obtained. No difficulty was experienced in the production oh high-carbon ferrochromium alloy containing 48 to 50 per cent chromium. Calculations of the energy balance show that UG-2 chromite has lower total energy requirements (both on the basis of unit of ferrochromium produced and of total chromium content). More than 50 per cent of the energy required for reduction can be supplied outside the smelting furnace.

An account is given of developments in the use of activated carbon for the recovery of gold from cyanide solutions. The carbon-In-pulp process employed at the Homestake Mine is described, and its various applications in South Africa and their effectiveness are discussed. Probable future work on the carbon-in-pulp process and other possible applications of carbon for the recovery of gold are outlined.

The Institute has concluded an agreement with the Chamber of Mines whereby the Chamber Librarian maintains a section in the Library for the Institute. The growing market demand for lithium is mainly due to its use in the manufacture of batteries for electric or hybrid vehicles and portable equipment (smartphones, tablets, power tools, notebooks, etc.). Currently there is great interest in finding new sources of lithium and technologies for its utilisation. Li-S batteries have received attention due to their theoretically high specific energy density, which is 3 to 5 times greater than that of Li-ion batteries. Unlike Li-ion batteries, of which the main raw materials are lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide, the main raw material for Li-S batteries is lithium chloride. The anode used in Li-S batteries is metallic lithium, produced by a molten lithium chloride electrolysis process. The extraction of lithium from pegmatites such as spodumene, previously abandoned in the 1990s for being uneconomical, has become attractive due to the increase in prices as well as the need for greater lithium purity of products made from lithium-bearing minerals. The main methods used for lithium recovery from spodumene ore include the sulfuric acid process, the alkaline process (lime or limestone as raw material) and the chlorination roasting process. Thermodynamic modelling using HSC software 5.1 was conducted to predict different reactions that could occur during chlorination roasting of the spodumene/MgCl2+CaCl2 system. Lithium extraction from the solid obtained after the chlorination roasting was also investigated. The results of thermodynamic analysis provided a better understanding of the chlorination roasting process for lithium extraction. Metallurgical tests with a mass ratio of 1:6 (spodumene:chlorides) and molar ratio of 2:1 (MgCl2:CaCl2) allowed over 95% recovery of the lithium contained in the spodumene concentrate. (Imperial College) (Visitor) The aqueous chemistry of gold(l) that has found practical application is mainly the chemistry of the anionic complexes involving ligands such as cyanide. sulphite, and the halides. The one potential exception is the cationic gold(I)-thiourea ion. While many laboratory studies have been made during the past decade. the application of thiourea in the processing of gold is only now reaching the development stage. While thiourea is relatively inexpensive. recent interest has probably been spurred mainly by the novel technology that could arise out of the cationic properties of the gold-thiourea ion. This review outlines the chemistry of gold and thiourea. and discusses the possible use of thiourea in the processing of gold with respect to dissolution. solvent extraction. ion exchange, electrowinning. electroplating. electroless deposition. electro-etching, and electropolishing.
