Rock mechanics benefits of stope support in deep-level mining originate principally from the ability of the support to resist relative movements between the hangingwall and the footwall. While the role of stabilizing pillars and backfill on reducing the energy release rate (ERR) at the face is well understood on the basis of elastic behaviour of the rock mass, the effect of support on controlling movement of fractured ground around deep-level stopes has not yet been thoroughly studied. As part of a programme of studying the behaviour of this fractured ground, geophones were placed 10 m from the face on the roof and floor of a longwall stope in which packs were used as supports. It was found that differential movement between the roof and floor generally exceeds average stope movement during a seismic event. Conventional support therefore transmits very little seismic energy; this is expected to remain true until complete convergence occurs. In backfilled stopes, backfill can become at least as stiff as the fractured wall rock. This will have the effect of reducing the length of the hanging- wall beam. Amongst other rock mechanics considerations, a shorter hanging- wall beam should: (i) increase the resonance frequency of the hangingwall and thereby decrease the levels of vibration for seismic events with M > 1,0; (ii) reduce absolute vibration levels by increasing the mass of rock immediately adjacent to the stope which is shaken by seismic waves; and (iii) reduce differential movement between the roof and floor and thereby reduce cyclic strain on the backfill and on gully support.

Optimizing the public gains from the exploitation of mineral resources By Dr A. AZIS and Dr J. ZWARTENDYK Every nation must decide how it should exploit its mineral resources so as to contribute most to its national objectives. It is argued that the present value of the future corporate income tax flow derived.from mineral exploitation may serve as a useful indicator in moving toward a taxation policy that would contribute optimally toward the greatest public benefit. The future stream of corporate income taxes depends largely on the mineral endowment, consisting of deposits now being mined, known unmined deposits, and unknown deposits. Unknown deposits may be estimated by geological inference. Both known and unknown deposits can be categorized according to grade and size, and divided into economic and uneconomic deposits on the basis of certain prices, costs, rate of return and taxation levels. Computer simulations can be run of discounted cash flow models at various taxation levels to showthe impact of taxation changes on future tax revenues.

Bracken Gold Mine ceased mining operations during February 1993. The clean-up of the gold plant, which had already commenced in September 1992, was completed in January 1994. The mine had been in production since early in 1962 but, because of a decreasing ore reserve, increasing working costs, and a relatively low gold price, closure had become inevitable. The closure had been under consideration since August 1983, when the first estimate was made regarding the amount of gold that could be recovered from the clean-up operations. Until that stage, it had been accepted that Bracken would conform to the commonly accepted idea that 0.25% of the total gold produced by the plant would be recovered during the clean-up operation. This idea was dispelled when the initial estimates indicated that the gold recovery would vary between 0.049 and 0.095%. The actual figure realized was 0.036%, showing that there is no generalforl1ula for the calculation of the amount of gold to be recovered from such clean-up operations. During the clean-up operation, Bracken became an unexpected contributor to the State's Reconstruction and Development Programme by having al the mine and plant buildings purchased and converted into a community development centre. This shortene4 the time available for the clean-up, and several of the buildings remained intact. However, the foundations and sub-soils had been sampled extensively, and it is considered that no recoverable gold was left behind.

Trends in PGM demand?The conference paper will cover a concise analysis of demand trends, which will include the major PGM end-use sectors (autocatalysis, jewellery, glass, petroleum, nitric acid, medical/dental) and will touch on the investment sector. Reference will be made to environmental legislation affecting global emission standards, trends in PGM loadings and the substitutability of platinum and palladium in this end-use sector. Observations will also be made on the jewellery sector, and the development of Chinese and Japanese demand. Trends in primary and secondary PGM supply?Similarly the paper will summarize historic and current global mine supply and primary production trends for PGMs, referencing recent expansions, their deliverability, and other projects coming on line. Consideration will be given to the grade and geology of PGMs worldwide and metallurgical developments. PGMs produced as by-products of base metal production and early PGM recycling estimates will also be appraised. In order to gain a wide-ranging appreciation of the industry?s long-term cost trends of producing virgin PGM metals, the paper will look at the cost and profit dynamics of global production on a regional basis (Western Bushveld, Eastern Bushveld, Northern Bushveld, Zimbabwe, USA, Canada and Russia). Extrapolating tomorrow?s PGM market and forecasting metal prices?Based on established industry trends and market practices Stephen Forrest will conclude by unveiling a variety of thought-provoking extrapolations of today?s and tomorrows platinum, palladium and rhodium markets to conference delegates. Importantly, having highlighted major developing PGM market trends in end-use (specifically on the elasticity of demand to high metal prices), primary and secondary PGM supply trends, in addition to presenting a carefully reasoned forecast of industry supply costs and margin trends, Stephen Forrest will conclude by estimating long-range PGM metal price trends. Other relevant market factors including industrial production, global currency rates and regional political factors will be deliberated.

The Conference began with registration, followed by a well-attended cocktail party on the evening of Sunday 25th, where, in a convivial atmosphere, Dr Louw Alberts, President of Mintek, welcomed the delegates and wished them an enjoyable and informative week. The Conference was formally opened by the Minister Mineral and Energy Affairs, the Honourable Mr D. W. Steyn, at 9hOO on Monday. Sketching the history of Mintek and its predecessors, Minister Steyn described the objective and achievements of Mintek, as well as the background to mineral-processing research in South Africa and the policy of the South African government towards the development of the mineral industry.

High pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) technology has come a long way in its application for comminution duty in hard rock mineral processing in the last three years. Several major projects in copper, nickel, gold, molybdenum, platinum, and iron ore have opted for this technology. Advances in wear abatement technology have established the HPGR as a reliable machine with the required high utilization and availability. The HPGR captures the imagination as the next step change improvement in ore processing, based on the following benefits: ?Energy efficiency (potentially 10?30% more efficient)?very topical in an increasingly ?green? society, and in times of rapidly increasing energy costs and availability concerns. 2008 has shown this to be especially important in Southern Africa ?High (and stable) throughput with a relatively small footprint ?Lower operation cost ?Liberation benefits ?Creative ?mine-to-metal? system improvements made possible by HPGR. The platinum industry, renowned for its historically conservative approach, has not been left behind with two significant new HPGR installations, one in Platreef application and one in UG2 application, commissioned in 2008. While the decision for the Platreef application was driven primarily by comminution circuit capacity and design imperatives, the UG2 application seeks to develop a flowsheet that will have a significant recovery benefit in addition to capacity increase and reduced operating cost. The Platreef application of HPGR also provides the opportunity to introduce a novel comminution flowsheet and to demonstrate exceptionally low wear rates treating very hard, abrasive and variable ore types. The HPGR lends itself for inclusion in existing SABC circuits to increase the capacity of the plant and mills. With current PGM prices many operations are attracted to the HPGR technology benefits. The HPGR clearly has the potential to transform entrenched opinion and provide decision makers with significant alternative comminution options. This paper aims to provide an overview of the current applications and to speculate on the transforming stimulus that the HPGR exerts on industry.

The tenth international symposium on the application of computer methods in the mineral industry (APCOM) was held in Johannesburg in April; the first time it had taken place outside North America. In the technical sessions fifty-seven papers were presented, providing a review of current work and including some important original contributions. These papers and a full account of the discussion at the symposium will soon be published in a single volume. The Technical Programme The first session of the symposium included an opening address given by Mr J. W. Shilling, President of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa, and a keynote address by Mr K. F. Lane of the Rio Tinto Corporation Limited. Mr Shilling spoke about the history of the South African mining industry and about some of the work of the Chamber of Mines. He stressed the importance of the symposium in familiarising those in mining with computer applications, and expressed his hope that it would stimulate and inspire scientists and engineers in the effort to develop safer and more economic methods of mining. Mr Lane, talking about economic and financial modelling, gave a fascinating account of the experience of RTZ over the last twelve years. Elutriation of solid reactants from fluidized bed reactors can affect their process performance and efficiency greatly. Chlorination fluidized bed reactors for selective conversion of solid metal oxides to metal chlorides are used widely these days. This study provides a platform for a proper understanding of reactant solid characteristics and solid shrinkage interaction with elutriation rate constants using multi-sized particles, sand-like, ?Geldart B? chloridable materials. The study has found that actual elutriation rates of the reactive system are influenced by complex parameters? interaction including bed diameter, reactor freeboard height, bed minimum fluidization velocity, and reactant?s physical properties.

"In this paper a discussion is presented of a program designed to produce a 40-day production forecast for an underground stoping system.The program is intended to be a tool for the operations department in an underground mine, and is designed to utilize data readily available from production reports. Brevity of data input, ability to revise slope conditions easily and the accuracy of starting stope status are stressed. Applicability of the program to a wide variety of sloping methods makes the program potentially useful in a large number of mines.The general functions of the program subroutines, and input and output lists are discussed. An example is also given of a stope in operation for a three-day period, which shows how the program can handle production irregularities as they arise."

In the wake of the financial crisis that affected world markets in 2002, there has been an increasing international focus on corporate governance. Various corporate governance codes of practice have been introduced, such as the Sarbanes-Oxley legislation in the USA, the Combined Code in the UK, and King III in South Africa. This focus on corporate governance has increased since the most recent financial crisis in 2008, the effects of which are still being felt world-wide. In the mining and minerals industry, reliable metal accounting is essential to sound corporate governance and is also becoming a focus of increased attention and concern, particularly as the figures generated by the metal accounting system feed directly into the financial accounts of mining companies. Mass measurement, sampling, and analysis provide the input data for the metal accounting system and sound corporate governance requires that the procedures used are based on best practice and that the data generated is accurate and handled correctly, transparently, and consistently to produce the accounting reports. The AMIRA Code of Practice for Metal Accounting has been widely adopted in the industry as a means to achieve this, and the compilers of the Code have conducted numerous metal accounting audits at operations, both in South Africa and abroad. SYNOPSIS A discussion is presented of the advances that have been made in rotary drilling in recent years and it is indicated how and why these drills have replaced percussive equipment even in the hardest formations at larger than 7 in. diameter. A method is presented showing how it is possible to estimate drill requirements and how to optimize drilling and blasting costs for a particular situation. To do this it is necessary to have, in addition to drill performance data, a knowledge of comparative explosive performance. Current methods of doing this are therefore critically appraised. As hole diameters have increased for overall drilling and blasting economies the question of fragmentation arises. In North America this has been approached on a try-it-and-see basis giving results that, in general, have been very satisfactory. The current drilling and blasting practices in North America are reviewed and reference made to the factors of importance in slope control.

INTRODUCTION What I want to discuss is the future pattern of manpower in the mining industry, and I should like to begin by examining some relevant statistics. There are four areas that must be examined. Firstly, the future rate of production of different minerals must be estimated. Secondly, an assessment must be made of the balance of different mining technologies likely to be used for each mineral. Thirdly, the manpower requirements for each technology must be determined. The spontaneous combustion of coal and the explosion of coal dust are two phenomena that were identified by the South African mining industry as requiring investigation. Research contracts were awarded to the G.P. Badenhorst Research Facility of the CSIR and the Department of Mining Engineering of the university of the Witwatersrand by the now defunct National Energy Council. Both projects entailed tests on numerous coal samples in specially designed apparatus. Since the completion of the project, attempts have been made to predict experimental results without incurring the cost of performing experiments. This paper describes predictive indices, based on routine laboratory tests, that were developed by the different research teams for their particular projects. A comparison of the results obtained by applying the spontaneous combustion liability index and the explosibility index to common coal samples indicates that, in general, propensity to spontaneous combustion and explosibility exhibit an inverse relationship. A brief overview is given of some major South African coal-mine disasters.

A Colloquium on 'Control and Simulation in the Minerals Industry' was held at the Holiday Inn, Milner Park, on 20th September, 1984, in conjunction with the Electra Mining Exhibition. A total of 170 persons attended the very full morning programme, which began with an opening address by the President, The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, Mr l.D. Austin. He outlined the reasons why computers were being used to an ever-increasing extent for control and simulation in the minerals industry. The computer was even used to check, among other things, the validity of the signals it was receiving by mass-balance calculations.

An experimental study of iron-smelting techniques used in the South African Iron Age by H. M. FRIEDE, Ph.D. and R. H. STEEL (Visitors) The main factors involved in the primitive smelting of iron (ore, charcoal, temperature, air supply, process control) were evaluated in an experimental furnace that was constructed to the pattern of an Iron Age furnace found at Melville Koppies Nature Reserve, Johannesburg. In particular, the characteristics, action, and efficiency of skin bellows were investigated to gaina better understanding of the air-supply system used. Sixteen specimens of iron ore, slag, and metallic iron (excavated material and material produced in the experimental furnace) were submitted to analysis. The results of the analyses are reported and discussed.

Drilling, Blasting, and Ore winning A General Meeting and Colloquium on the above subject was held on November 13th, 1974, at Kelvin House, Johannesburg. Professor R. P. Plewman (President) was in the Chair. The Colloquium was attended by 235 delegates and was opened by the President at 09h30.
