Before we look at what the challenges and opportunities for future coal mining will be, it is appropriate to have a look at whether there will be a coal industry in the future. There is much talk about the damage caused by the burning of fossil fuels and the need to replace coal and oil with more environmentally friendly energy sources. Yes, there is evidence that the current practice in burning of fossil fuel has certain negative environmental effects, however, the adverse effects for global economic development from inappropriate measures to control greenhouse gas emissions would be severe.

This investigation compares the results from an experimental and numerical study of air flow in a scaled-down underground coal mine model. This was done in order to determine if numerical analysis can be relied upon when searching for ventilation solutions to control high concentration of coal dust and methane gas in underground coal mines. Steady state analyses were used to identify flow patterns and recirculation regions within the mining section while transient state analyses were used to determine the time taken to extract the initial air from the model. The agreement between the experimental and numerical results indicates that numerical modelling is useful in this regard. The study went further to devise a method of determining the optimum position of the jet fan that is responsible for mine-gas dilution at different stages of mining.

The south west area of Cyprus has a long history of slope instability problems. The location and extent of these landslides has been influenced by ground morphology, geological structure and the presence of weak rocks and cohesive soils. The main triggering mechanisms have been precipitation and/or seismic events. Landslides have contributed to the decision to relocate villages and considerable efforts have been put into maintaining the integrity of the local transportation network. This paper uses a recent case study of road embankment failure near Pentalia in southwest Cyprus to review the available tools for the analysis of slope instability. It further demonstrates how the shear strength reduction technique can be used in a finite element analysis to better visualise the slope instability mechanism of a road embankment and provide a reliable tool in selecting appropriate remedial measures.

High temperature creep resistant alloys are used in power plants as steam pipes and headers where they have to withstand super heated steam temperatures of up to 600ºC for the lifetime of the plant. Frequently certain portions of pipes may be subjected to excessive temperatures and consequently suffer from creep damage. Damaged portions then have to be replaced by welding new steel to the service exposed steel. Such welds will have to be subjected to a post weld heat treatment (PWHT) to relieve residual stress. During such a PWHT it is then possible for the steel to crack in the heat affected zone (HAZ) by what is known as Reheat Cracking (RHC), also known as stress relief cracking. For the present purpose the RHC susceptibility of service exposed steel was compared with that of new steel by reproducing the temperature cycle to which the HAZ will be subjected during welding in a weld simulator. This was followed by PWHT where the influence of residual stress was studied by applying a constant stress to such a weld-simulated specimen in a creep testing machine. A sharp spiral was machined along the length of the cylindrical specimen to simulate the presence of a possible weld defect. In this way it is possible to subject all portions of the simulated HAZ to the same stress intensity. For the purpose of the investigation 1/2Cr-1/2Mo-1/4V steel known to be susceptible to RHC was chosen. During testing a constant tensile stress was maintained while the temperature was increased to follow the thermal cycle prescribed for PWHT. It was found that the new steel in all instances failed by RHC along the grain boundaries in the high temperature heat affected zone. In the case of the service exposed steel the creep strength of parent metal was lower than that of new steel as a result of exposure to a steam temperature of 540°C for about 15 years. Consequently, all of the failures during testing occurred in a ductile manner by necking outside the HAZ rather than by RHC. When service exposed steel is welded to new material, it is expected that the creep strain associated with stress relaxation will mostly be concentrated in the parent steel outside the HAZ. Accordingly, it should probably not be necessary to make any extra allowance for reheat cracking during repair of steam pipes manufactured from 1/2Cr-1/2Mo-1/4V steel other than that applicable for welding new steel.

In today?s gas turbines, the emphasis is on saving energy and reducing the amounts of pollutants emitted. This can be attained only by designing alloys with higher melting points and the capability to retain mechanical integrity at increased temperatures. The development of nickel-based superalloys (NBSAs) has reached its limit, as the alloys are operating at critical temperatures close to their melting points. Further increase in the operating temperatures will result in dissolution of the strengthening phases and even melting. Recent trends are towards developing materials that are adequately strong but have much higher melting points and corrosion resistance than the NBSAs that are currently in use. Studies conducted on Pt alloys with similar structure to the NBSAs have presented mechanical results that are promising. This has led to further development of these alloys as a replacement for NBSAs. The operations of gas turbines are usually limited by hot corrosion, which could lead to catastrophic failures. Increased temperatures have an adverse effect on the corrosion of the alloys by making the environment more aggressive. Hence, during a material selection process, the corrosion behaviour of any selected material for a highly specialized application such as gas turbines needs to be assessed. Generally, coatings are applied to combat degradation by salt deposits, hence coated and uncoated NBSAs were selected as benchmark alloys. Corrosion mechanisms and kinetic studies of the Pt alloys were conducted. High temperature hot corrosion (HTHC) tests were conducted at 950°C for540 hours. Analysis of the corrosion products was conducted using a Raman spectrometer, scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) optical microscopy, and X-ray diffraction study of the phases that formed. Both coated and uncoated NBSAs failed under the test conditions. Samples were covered with a porous non-adherent greenish layer which is characteristic of NiO. Pt alloys displayed superior corrosion properties compared with the benchmark alloys.

This manuscript focuses on the design and development of steels for the railroad industry and methods of testing them. Here are summarized the results of research focusing on alloy development and design, with particular focus on advanced rails and wheels. The high-performance steels are characterized for their mechanical and service characteristics. The relationship between properties and cleanliness is discussed and compared to the regular railroad steel. Some of the tests presented are standard tests that are complemented with the nonstandard test recommended by the Association of American Railroads (AAR) and recommended modifications of this. The paper presents the results of metallurgical analysis, mechanical, and residual stress tests. The laboratory methods include microstructure, residual stresses, tensile, hardness, fracture toughness, and microcleanliness tests.

This study analyses the results of a pilot trial of a newly developed armed-chained stone-cutting machine. The machine was developed in Turkey and trialed at the Kaklik/Kocaba travertine quarries in the Denizli District. An armed-chained cutting machine is an alternative to the diamond wire cutting method more frequently used in the production of natural stone quarry blocks, and increases production efficiency and quality. Since there is no need to collapse the blocks using the armed-chained cutting production process, there is no risk of the block developing cracks. This results in a considerable increase in the efficiency of natural stone block production. The armed-chained cutting machine is easier both to assemble and run when compared to other block cutting methods. This process resulted in the production of a larger number of blocks at a lower cost within the same time frame, particularly in travertine quarries and in all other natural stone quarries. The block efficiency in travertine quarries was calculated as 65?80%using the armed-chained cutting machine, compared with 7?14% using the normal diamond wire cutting method.

Specific energy is defined as the amount of work required to break a unit volume of rock and is used to predict the performance of mechanical miners. It is obtained from full-scale rock cutting experiments, which require large block samples, experienced personnel and expensive equipment found in only a few research centres in the world. Estimation of the optimum specific energy, at which a given geological formation is excavated at optimum cutting geometry in the most energy efficient manner, from mechanical rock properties to predict the performance/efficiency of roadheaders is the basic aim of this study. The mechanical rock property tests require only core samples, which are easier to obtain and to test. In this context, full-scale rock cutting tests are performed on 23 different rock, mineral and ore samples including sandstone, claystone, tuffite, chromite, trona and copper collected from some operating mines in Turkey. The optimum specific energy values are obtained for each sample. Physical and mechanical property tests are performed on the core samples obtained from the same samples to determine uniaxial compressive strength, indirect (Brazilian) tensile strength, static and dynamic elasticity moduli, Schmidt hammer rebound values, density, and Cerchar abrasivity index. The relationships between the optimum specific energy and the mechanical rock properties are analysed using statistical methods. The results indicate strong relationships between the optimum specific energy and the mechanical rock properties. The strongest relationships are found by using uniaxial compressive strength and tensile strength. The performance models developed in this study are in good agreement with the empirical models previously developed for roadheaders and can be used reliably for prediction purposes. More than 30 percent of the global demand for zircon (ZrSi04) is supplied by South Africa. A significant amount of the zircon is exported, and beneficiated products are then imported for industrial applications locally. Beneficiating the zircon locally could have a positive impact on the local market, since zircon is only one of many such cases. Ammonium acid fluoride serves as an alternative anhydrous fluorinating agent for zircon in the synthesis of several metal fluorides1,2. It provides an effective dry fluorinating method and is easier to handle than hydrogen fluoride or fluorine gas. Zircon exposed to extreme plasma temperatures dissociates and becomes more reactive. The reaction of the plasma-dissociated zircon (Zr02.SiO2) with the ammonium acid fluoride (NH4F.XHF, where x= 1 to 5) forms two main intermediate compounds (NH4)3ZrFr(s) and (NH4) 2SiF6(s), the latter decomposing to form volatile products at relatively low temperatures, providing easy separation of the silicon and zirconium compounds. The ammonium zirconate compound decomposes to form zirconium tetrafluoride (ZrF4), which can be further manufactured into zirconium metal, to name but one product. Data on the kinetics of the reaction of ammonium acid fluoride with zircon and plasma-dissociated zircon, combined with the thermo¬dynamic parameters of the reaction, is essential for the development of an industrial process for the production of a precursor for the manufacturing of zirconium metal, namely anhydrous ZrF4. Both the reaction kinetics and reaction parameters will be included in this study, as well as some proof that the reaction proceeds to ZrF4 on a small batch scale. If the exact reaction parameters can be pinned down, a wide spectrum of anhydrous metal fluorides can be synthesized through this fluorination route.

Zincite and spinel phases are present in the complex slag systems encountered in zinc/lead sintering and zinc smelting processes. These phases form extensive solid solutions and are stable over a wide range of compositions, temperatures and oxygen partial pressures. Accurate information on the stability of these phases is required in order to develop thermodynamic models of these slag systems. Phase equilibria in the Fe-Zn-O system have been experimentally studied for a range of conditions, between 900 and 1580°C and oxygen partial pressures (pO2) between air and metallic iron saturation, using equilibration and quenching techniques. The compositions of the phases were measured using Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis (EPMA). The ferrous and ferric bulk iron concentrations were determined using a specially developed wet-chemical analysis procedure based on the use of ammonium metavanadate. XRD was used to confirm phase identification. A procedure was developed to overcome the problems associated with evaporation of zinc at lowpO2s and to ensure the achievement of equilibria. An isothermal section of the system FeO-Fe2O3-ZnO at high ZnO concentrations at 1200°C was constructed. The maximum solubilities of iron and zinc in zincite and spinel phases in equilibrium were determined at pO2=1*10-6atm at 1200and 1300°C. The morphology of the zincite crystals sharply changes in air between 1200 and 1300°C from rounded to plate-like. This is shown to be associated with significant increase in total iron concentration, the additional iron being principally in the form of ferric iron. Calculations performed by Fact Sage with a thermodynamically optimized database have been compared with the experimental results. The traditional electrolyte for aluminium electrolysis is based on molten cryolite (Na3AlF6), acting as solvent for the raw material, alumina (Al2O3). Over the years there has been a trend to increase the content of excess aluminium fluoride (AlF3) to the cryolite-based electrolyte, in order to enhance the current efficiency of the process. In most cases one has ended up at 11?13 wt% excess AlF3because higher contents makes it difficult to control the heat balance of the process. This problem may be overcome if sensors are developed that will allow online control of electrolyte temperature and composition, and we may then see a surge towards still higher AlF3contents. In the development of new anode materials to replace the carbon anode with inert, oxygen-evolving anodes, focus is on anode corrosion, and a low electrolyte temperature is then highly desirable. While the conventional process operates at around 960°C, electrolyte temperatures as low as 750°C are being tested. This is achieved by having large excess contents of AlF3(40 wt%). The consequences of using such electrolyte compositions are discussed.

Changing mining conditions, legislative issues, rising costs, and the constrained supply of skills and electricity in South Africa, have been some of the criteria forcing mine operators and engineers to review the traditional use of compressed air to power underground hand-held drilling operations in narrow-stope, hard-rock mines. In answering the question, 'What is the best way to power this mine?', they have resorted to trade-off studies with results of limited usefulness, because they are site-specific, and use only a few comparative parameters, based on a small data set. This paper aims to provide definitive, objective, and quantitative decision-making approaches to evaluating alternative energy-delivery systems for stoping in narrow-reef hard rock mines, based on primary and relevant criteria. These include quantifiable criteria such as capital expenditure, operating costs, resulting financial returns, energy and water usage, production performance, life-of-mine, etc. Other important criteria with qualitative aspects are integrated. These are safety, health, and environmental concerns, legislative requirements, business risk, technology change, etc. The paper begins with a review of decision-making processes available, and proposes the use of the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) method as a multiple-criteria decision-making tool and the decision tree based on milestone-driven uncertainties, to validate the selection of the energy delivery system. The results of a multiple-criteria questionnaire completed by a variety of industry experts and professionals, such as production and operation managers, consultants, suppliers, and techno-financial analysts, are discussed. The evaluation indicates the potential for hydropower to be the best solution for narrow-reef hard rock mines, based on current information, mine design layout and production.

Sandsloot open pit is situated on the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex, 250 km north east of Johannesburg, South Africa. Sandsloot is currently the largest open pit platinum mine in the world and is one of six potential open pits in the area. The geotechnical strength properties of the Platreef have posed significant mining and processing challenges to the PPRust operation since inception in 1992. In order to optimize the whole business as opposed to isolated cost centres a mine to mill initiative was embarked upon in 1997. Initial work focused on ore characterization and an entire suite of data was collected for each rock type. This included mineralogy, geochemistry, geotechnical, blast ability indices, as well as metallurgical strength data. The second phase involved the clear definition of customer requirements, namely the optimum performance criteria for the plant and mining departments. This involved extensive field trials and data capture to measure the interaction and influence of the mine to mill value chain. Once the design targets were defined, a 3D geotechnical model was constructed to ensure that the targets were consistently achieved. The model is very similar to an ore reserve model; however, it is populated with geotechnical, metallurgical and blast index data. Through software queries the appropriate blast powder factor for each mining block can be obtained, thereby ensuring the correct fragmentation is blasted for the plant and mining operation. The initiative has delivered significant results showing improvements across the mine to mill value chain. These include increased loading rates, reduced electricity and crushing consumables, as well as higher plant throughput. Additionally, the initiative has benefited both brownfield and greenfield projects on the PPRust operation

The efficiency of high capacity SAG mills which consume large amounts of energy depends on the grinding and slurry discharge systems. A 9.7 m × 4.8 m SAG mill with radial pulp lifters is used at the Sarcheshmeh copper complex grinding circuit. The process audit indicated that the pulp discharge system was not efficient, judging by the amount of slurry flow back and carry over. These events limited the discharge rate and increased the wear rate of the lifters and grates. With the objective of finding a new design for pulp lifters, a 3D DEM software (KMPCDEM ©), along with the plant operational data and photographic evidence was used. The KMPCDEM © software was used to compare the efficiency of the radial and curved pulp lifter design based on the material flow. The slurry flow was analysed in terms of ease of discharge and lifter wear rate. It was found that changing the radial pulp lifters to curved pulp lifters could improve the discharge efficiency,and decrease wear rate of the pulp lifter in particular at the base of the pulp lifters. The simulation results showed that if curved lifters with a radius of 0.3×mill radius are used, the amount of slurry flow back and carry over will be negligible. It is predicted that by installing the curved pulp lifters, the capacity of the mill increases by 10% and the pulp lifter service life improves by at least 20%. A novel variation of the GYPCIX process for the treatment of the acid mine effluent water from Grootvlei is described, in which a number of valuable by products can be obtained and the product water can be used for a variety of different purposes. A conceptual case study is presented in which the important cost parameters are described and certain critical path activities are indicated in order to derive a Return on Investment evaluation according to methods previously published. The study indicates that the treatment costs can be dramatically reduced, provided that proper utilization of the by products is taken into account. There are many possible uses for the water. However, by far the most advantageous contribution to the RDP and the best return on capital is derived if the water is used to establish small-lot farming activities providing work opportunities for thousands of people and contributing several hundred million Rands to the GDP. Vastly improved social conditions will be generated in an area of Gauteng that is in danger of rapid deterioration and a contribution will be made to maintaining mining activities in this area. The environmental impact is positive.

The practice of pumping gases which inhibit combustion for purposes of controlling or extinguishing mine fires is now universally accepted. The practice has been used many times in coal mines in India and the experiences are reviewed. The procedures relating to a membrane based nitrogen generator and to a combustion gases generator are described. The physical properties, practical requirements and economic implications of using different gases is briefly reviewed. Some aspects of the practice as related to mine fires in certain collieries in other countries are dealt with.

The effect of composition on electrical conductivity (resistivity), viscosity and liquidus temperature of the slags encountered in electric smelting of PGM-containing suphide concentrates is reviewed along with the relationsip between slag composition, slag-matte separation and metal losses to slag. Optimization of slag composition at furnace temperature is attempted on the basis of opposite and parabolic trends of the viscosity-conductivity relationships of the slags. The importance of surface tension of slags is emphasized using available and estimated information, which are grouped into a useful correlation. These values are coupled with or incorporated into slag viscosity plots to illustrate the correlation between the two factors which influence slag-matte separation as well as refractory attack. The electrode in the slag-resistance furnace is the central factor in the design and operation of the furnace by its role of conveying the smelting power. The obvious parameters are the size and positioning in the slag bath, which are defined by slag resistivity, furnace resistance, cell constant and power input. The flow of heat generated by the electrode current determines the energy distribution and furnace dimensions creating viscosity profiles, which in turn affect flow conditions. Thus the flow of slag and matte isdiscussed in conjunction with the furnace geometry, stirring action of the electrodes, buoyancy and electromagnetic effects. The action of the electric furnace as a settler is discussed. The rectangular furnace is considered as a channel reactor in this analysis and the action of the electrodes is described to indicate a balanced settling rate in the area of electrode action. Discussion of the design and production capacity of the electric furnace with reference to operating current, power input, furnace dimensions and electrode size are based on considerations derived mainly from slag properties such as its resistivity, viscosity and liquidus temperature.

The investment decision making process in the insurance and finance industries is affected by new advances such as simulation techniques. These advances have improved the discounted cash flow method (DCF). In DCF, a dynamic and flexible model construction is not possible because it does not consider uncertain conditions. Each project should be evaluated taking into account the related uncertainties because the related uncertainties determine the characterization of the project. Related uncertainties can be processed in dynamic DCF, which is applicable to both financial and non-financial industries with different kind of uncertainties, such as power generation and petroleum projects. The dynamic DCF method can estimate net present value (NPV) while managing related project uncertainties with a simulation method like Monte Carlo Simulation. The simulation method is preferred because its output is unbiased. Therefore, a more realistic financial evaluation of the project can be concluded. In spite of the improvement of dynamic DCF, this project evaluation method is not used frequently in mining industry. However, the mining industry is ideally suited to this concept because it is highly dependent on estimations such as orebody size and ore grade. During the project evaluation stage, these uncertainties can be included with the dynamic DCF method. This study aims to contribute to increasing the usage of this method in mining projects. A copper reserve in Turkey is selected as a case study to apply uncertainty assessment for the evaluation of NPV.

In ilmenite smelting, the FeO content of the feed material (nominally FeO.TiO2) is decreased by reduction with carbon. In a parallel reaction, a significant amount of the TiO2 is reduced toTi2O3. One of the striking features of these reactions is a consistent relationship between the extents of FeO and TiO2 reduction; this relationship is independent of furnace size. It was recently proposed that this relationship follows from the solidification behaviour of the slag, where the final slag composition corresponds to the minimum melting point (?eutectic groove?) in the FeO-TiO2-Ti2O3 phase system; the hypothesis is that solidification equilibrium with the freeze lining stabilizes the slag composition. If this is the case, the system of slag and freeze lining must be capable of correcting two types of disturbances: thermal and compositional. Thermal disturbances result from incorrect power input, for the feed rates of ilmenite and reductant. For example, excessive power input will tend to overheat the slag, causing the freeze lining to melt partially, establishing a new steady-state heat loss from the furnace. Compositional disturbances result from an incorrect reductant input for the given power and ilmenite input. In this work, the dynamic response of the slag and freeze lining to different inputs (flow rates of ilmenite and reductant, and power input) is modelled. The model is based on solidification equilibria, and quantified heat loss through the freeze lining. The conclusion is that the solidification equilibrium cannot constrain the composition to the eutectic groove for typical operating conditions.
