It is the responsibility of educators to look ahead and prepare young engineers and scientists to cope with industrial and social problems of the future. We are faced with a review of history as well as prophesy of the future. The mining industry exists in a "bubble" with little interaction or communication with the outside. This isolation must be broken down if the industry is to survive in the U.S. and Canada. The ability to communicate with the general public and public officials is essential. Many changes are occurring that will require readjustments in technology and staffing. Aging population will result in raising retirement and increasing available workforce. This may force shorter working weeks to supply additional jobs. Environmental concerns will likely direct more attention not only to these concerns during mining, but to planning for post-mining land usage. Retraining and up-dating educational programs are required to cope with these changes.

"Sometimes it’s the smallest things that make the biggest difference. In the world of mining, erosion can lead to small cracks, which can then lead to bigger problems that, over time, can eventually lead to a catastrophic event. However, when managed correctly, as in the case of the Manefey Slide at the Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah, the damage can be minimized.Numerous industry conferences, technical papers, studies and resources are dedicated to these issues each year, but what is sometimes overlooked is how the erosion of personal ethics can also have life-changing effects.At the 2019 SME Minnesota Conference, April 15-17 in Duluth, MN, two inmates serving their respective prison sentences at the U.S. Federal Prison Camp in Duluth spoke to the conference about how small cracks in their ethical foundations grew over time, eventually leading each man to his new address at the minimum-security facility.The men’s full names were not released and they were introduced as Jeff and Tony. Other than the matching green uniforms, both middle-aged men could have fit in with the rest of the crowd. They are well-educated and articulate whose career paths eroded thanks to greed and careless decisions.Tony, a licensed professional engineer, enjoyed a successful career working in contract oversight for the U.S. Department of Defense. Jeff is a former senior vice president of investments who ran a well-respected investment management team. Both spoke openly about the mistakes they made and emphasized that their crimes were not flagrant violations of the black and white rules but grew from ethical violations that live in the gray area between black and white, and right and wrong.Working in contract oversight for the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), Tony said he was befriended by a wealthy man who was generous with his money. As Tony told it, a few meals with this man led to a few trips to casinos and eventually to gifts of money. The donor did not ask for anything in return, and at the time, Tony said he did not think that he was doing anything wrong. He admits now that the perception of a high-ranking officer in the DOD accepting gifts is not a good one, as it could be construed as the donor might have been trying to gain favor for future contracts; which is how it was presented in court by the prosecution team."

Heap leaching efficiency is reduced by poor solution flow characteristics (channeling and ponding), which result from compaction and fines migration. Agglomeration of the ore can prevent compaction and immobilize fines, but copper leaching requires an acid-resistant binder to stabilize the agglomerates. Until now, there has not been a satisfactory way to evaluate whether a binder was effective, other than squeezing a handful to see if it ?feels right.? Procedures have been developed to quantitatively determine whether a binder produces agglomerates that can withstand compaction in an acidic solution, and have identified several binders that will provide sufficiently compaction-resistant agglomerates for copper heap leaching. "Environmental considerations are a key driver within marine mining consenting processes across different national and international legislative regimes and are critical in shaping the global public perception of the industry. As a result, it is vital that mining companies seeking to operate within marine environments establish a robust understanding of the sensitivities of the seabed environments in which they are active, the impacts of their activities and the ability of the environment to recover from these impacts. The significant risks of failing to do so include an inability to either obtain or maintain operating permits. At the individual project level, the environmental effects of any given development project are typically defined within the scope of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). For well-established industries operating in well-studied environments this approach typically works well. However, where emerging industries or existing industries that are operating within new environments are concerned, there may be significant knowledge gaps pertaining to our understanding of how specific anthropogenic practices or activities interact with the marine environment. These knowledge gaps can cause significant uncertainties pertaining to the likely significant effects of a project. Such uncertainties may result in barriers to industry and economic progress, increased consenting risks, increased project costs to be borne by individual project developers through the acquisition of additional environmental data during the pre-consent or post-consent project phases, project delays and/or significant increases in environmental monitoring burdens with corresponding increases in project costs."

This is the fifth annual tabulation of mineral royalty information. This tabulation, like the previous editions, includes all of the earlier data. There are also 60 new entries. In addition to royalty information, some entries show the cost of purchased reserves. Two articles relative to the evaluation of minerals reserves appeared in December, 1986. R.H. Paschall (In the Aggregate, ME, p 1139) wrote a good article, although it lacked specific royalty data. However, this author takes exception to two ideas in Paschall's column. Paschall contends that the royalty rate does not affect the mineral appraisal. This present author could not disagree more. Paschall also claims the location of an industrial mineral deposit is the only serious or practical caveat in comparing royalties. Comments received here from readers helped make the list of caveats that are cited each year. The readers will decide which factors influence the mineral value for their commodities of interest. Paschall's point about the relationship of the parties who are negotiating a royalty agreement is important and very well taken. The other article, written by William Vernon (Pit and Quarry, December 1986), gives a step-by-step process on how to conduct a mineral appraisal. The article cites three reasons for an appraisal: transfer rights; collateral for a loan; and taxation. A fourth reason is to establish adequate compensation for reserves lost through condemnation. This author has appeared in several court cases where compensation for loss of mineral reserves through condemnation required a mineral appraisal. Royalty rate becomes an important factor in the appraisal process, although the Pit and Quarry article refers to that part of the valuation equation as "profitability." Both articles were well written and are recommended reading for those interested in mineral valuations. The same caveats that have appeared in previous columns relative to factors that influence the value of reserves are restated. The data in the table serve as a general reference and are not intended to present an absolute scale of reserves costs. Several factors influence the value of any mineral commodity. The factors include: • location/transportation - especially significant for most industrial minerals; • market conditions both for the commodity and the company acquiring the right to mine; • quality or grade of the deposit as it reflects the amount of processing/beneficiation necessary to produce the finished product; and • legislative restrictions and conditions for mining a given material at a given site. These and other factors will significantly influence the cost of reserves. The table shows the range of royalties and the variations in the basis of computing the fees. In a few instances, it gives the cost of acquired reserves based on purchase price and quantitative estimates of the material in place. The table lists the commodity in column 1, and the subsequent columns give: • the location by state, US geographic area, or Canadian province ; • the cost - R for royalty and P for purchased cost; • the year in which the lease or purchase agreement occurred; and • comments or footnotes for more information. The cost column requires more explanation. Interlocking material balances on complex mineral dressing plants greatly assist in metallurgical investigations: indeed, without such a balance, there is no firm basis upon which to base process performance evaluations. To achieve balances both qualitative and quantitative data must be rationalised in conjunction with the process flowsheet. WSL has developed a range of programs to evaluate interlocking material balances. However, to obtain maximum benefit from the balances, answers of direct value at the process level must be provided: WSL has developed also a range of programs for this purpose. Practical examples are given, which illustrate the benefits obtained from process balances.

Development of a three-dimensional mine visualization model for a section of the mine is addressed first. Discontinuity orientation and location information was taken from this visualization model for use in slope stability analyses. Estimated shear strength properties of discontinuities and mechanical properties of intact rock from the rock mass samples obtained from the mine are discussed next. The paper is then focused on the calculated maximum safe slope angles based on the performed kinematic and block theory analyses using the mapped discontinuities at the mine. Finally, the effects of water that exist in the rock mass, tension cracks, slope face inclination, overall wedge height and double benching on factor of safety of wedge stability are illustrated through limit equilibrium slope stability analyses.

Smooth roll crushers are widely used as secondary crushers, operating most effectively when set for size reductions in a ratio between 3 or 4 to I. The feed supplied to these units varies from 13 to 102 mm in size and the product obtained ranges from 13 mm to about 20 mesh. Smooth roll crushers produce very few fines and absolutely no oversize. The diameter otfhe rolls varies with the clearance between them, feed size, and the coefficient of internal friction ofmaterial to be crushed, Detailed calculations of this relationship may be found in Unit operations of Chemical Engineering, (McCabe, W. The mining industry in northern Ontario is known mostly for its huge nickel deposits. Inco’s and Falconbridge’s nickel mines in the Sudbury Basin are the best known. And with nickel prices being what they are, interest in the region continues. And how. Inco and Falconbridge want to merge. Teck Cominco wants Inco, but without Falconbridge. Xstrata made a hostile bid for Falconbridge, which Falconbridge rejected. And, in June, Phelps Dodge trumped them all when it made an approximately US$40-billion friendly offer for Inco and Falconbridge in a two-part deal.

An Overall View of the Japanese Ferroalloys Industry 1) Depressed Demand for Ferroalloys: In Japan consumption of ferroalloys in the last ten years has decreased, although there has been some fluctuation from year to year. During this term production figures of the steel industry, which are closely related to consumption of ferroalloys, are as follows: Shipment of steel products for the domestic market has declined gradually from 69 million tons in 1979, which was the peak year for steel production, to 60.3 million tons in 1982 and 60.4 million tons in 1983, the level of 1978. In addition, exports also have been a downward trend since 1976, which was the peak year with tonnage of 34 million tons, to 28 million tons in 1982 and 31 million tons in 1983.

This paper treats the spatial aspect of mine sequence optimization, revealing it in the context of determining the optimum number of cutbacks of an openpit mine. Cutback mining is currently a dominant method in the mining of base and precious metals. It is based on a pseudo-economic discretization of the pit space using advanced pit design algorithms. The result of implementing such an approach of pit design is the generation of pit shells, which need to be grouped into an optimum number of cutbacks to maximize project value. In this paper, the development of a mathematical solution of this problem using combinatorial analysis is presented. The solution provides a multivariate investigation of the optimum mine sequence with the implementation of a method for production scheduling optimization that uses Net Present Value (NPV) as a criterion for assessing the economic efficiency of mine sequencing. A case study using the conditions of a hypothetical openpit gold mine is provided to illustrate the applicability of the approach. The results obtained reveal the complex nature of NPV variation as a function of the cutback geometry.

The World Health Organization (WHO) considers contamination from oxyanions, such as selenium and arsenic, a global concern. While their elemental forms are toxic, the aqueous oxyanions are more so. These aqueous forms, which exist at a higher oxidation state, are the most common forms released during mining processes. Many technologies are capable of meeting the governmental discharge criteria for oxyanionic contaminants, but may possess limitations due to redox chemistry as well as the water matrices. An innovative technology was developed that can successfully reduce such aqueous forms generated during mining processes to a level below the discharge criteria. This paper discusses how an understanding of the sensitivities of this novel adsorbent towards these variations in water matrices and redox chemistry can be used to optimize its application.

Although the foundation of a unified treatment of fluid flow in variably saturated porous media was established more than seventy years ago, no serious attempt was made to develop it until the early 1970's. Ever since, a number of unsaturated-saturated numerical models have been reported in the literature. However, none of these models have treated multidimensional, multiphase flow in deforming media, parts of which may undergo extensive secondary fracturing. A situation such as this is not uncommon in coal mining operations in which the longwall method of extraction is employed. The present model has been structured to handle such physical systems. This paper presents the mathematical formulation, the numerical algorithm, and a further validation and evaluation of the modified model. The model treats a multiphase flow in a three- dimensional regime and handles mining excavations of complex and changing configurations.

A damaged outlet pipe beneath Lenihan Dam has restricted reservoir discharges, severely constraining the owner?s groundwater recharge program. The solution, a new outlet pipeline through the dam?s right abutment, includes an approximately12.2-m-deep (40-ft-deep) shaft and 618.7-m-long, 4.3-m-diameter (2,030-ft long, 14-ft-diameter) tunnel mined in Franciscan melange composed of hard blocks of rock and soft clayey matrix. Alternating road header with drill and blast operations and using steel ribs and shotcrete have proven a flexible combination for handling the variable ground conditions. Excavating the shaft and connecting it to the tunnel require lowering the reservoir for five months, during which time careful construction sequencing and use of a tunnel plug eliminate the risk of an uncontrolled discharge.

The mineral kaolinite is one of the commonest minerals in the uppermost 10 m of the continental crust; ranking in abundance alongside minerals like quartz, mica, feldspar and calcite. Only very exceptionally does it possess all the necessary properties needed to make it worth commercially exploiting. The terms 'Kaolin' and 'Kaolinite' are derived from a locality known as 'Kau-ling', in Jiangxi Province, Peoples Republic of China; where samples of a white clay used by the Chinese to make porcelain were first obtained by European missionaries and explorers in the eighteenth century.

Conventional concrete block plastered with a cemantitious coating is the most common material used in the construction of perma¬nent stoppings to direct airflow in underground mines in the U.S.A. All mines experience various degrees of strata convergence depending upon depth of overburden, geological conditions, and type of roof support employed. Strata convergence will cause cracks and joint openings in masonry stoppings, resulting in significant air leakage losses. Where strata convergence is severe, complete structural failure of the stopping can ultimately occur. Reconstruction of damaged or destroyed stoppings adds expensive overhead to mining operations, and even greater expenses are incurred from the additional fan horsepower required to overcome leakage losses. Ideally, a stopping should maintain high resistance to airflow while yielding to strata convergence. By properly incorporating "Max-Seal" polyisocyanurate rigid foam material within the masonry block structure, stopping service life can be increased several-fold in mines experiencing strata convergence problems such as floor heave, roof loading, and lateral rib movement.

INTRODUCTION This is the first in a series of papers addressing practical tunnel lining design. The format for this and future papers is to present a particular topic and support the presentation of the guidelines by the practical application of a case history. The primary intent is to provide guidelines for the geotechnical and structural design of tunnels where the tunnel size and/or ground conditions dictates that systematic support of the excavation is required following each increment of excavation. This method of tunneling is commonly referred to as Sequential Excavation and Support(SES) and is also commonly termed the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) The authors developed the design guidelines from experience gained over the past two decades during the design and construction of several major railway, highway and water-transfer tunnel projects in Africa and Asia. During this time it has been possible to compare the performance of the as-constructed structures to the predicted performance as given by the design process. Excavation was typically carried out in widely varying ground conditions (weak-bedded rock, jointed hard rock, and soil-like poorly cemented rock with groundwater). It is therefore intended that the design guidelines could be applied, in general terms at least, to any tunnel excavated in any ground mass condition with any ground material type (hard rock, soft rock, bedded rock, soft ground, and soil) with or without ground water. This first paper is an introductory paper that defines the scope and a brief outline of the design issues that may be presented in detail in later papers. What is design? It may be thought of as any rational/verifiable/justifiable process whereby a concept is transformed into information that can be used to bring the concept to reality. In the case of a civil structure, design may be defined as that process, which is documented and can be audited, that determines information such as the shape (form) of the structure, the dimensions (size) of the structure, the thickness and strength of structural members that comprise the structure, etc. This information can be used to compute the time, money and resources required for

Scope of Section The physical characterization of an ore or mineral mixture in such detail that mineral processing may be effectively applied to create more useful products is one part of the technology of sampling and testing. In addition, the evaluation of the multitude of separation processes, both physical and chemical, combined with ancillary opera¬tions and performed on samples at a laboratory scale, is another part of the testing procedure. Although analytical techniques provid¬ing quantitative determinations of elemental compositions are an im¬portant and necessary supplement to any testing program, that field of endeavor is a well-developed, separate entity beyond the scope of this Section. Sampling procedures cover the practice of selecting representative quantities of test materials in the field to evaluate mineral deposits, and extend to techniques of obtaining process samples in slurry and bulk ore as part of process evaluation. The same techniques are appli¬cable, of course, to standardized methods of metallurgical accounting. Sampling is also an important facet of successful on-line measurement of slurry properties such as assays and particle size in the practice of automation. However, the sampling methods in this case can be different from those needed for precise testing and accounting pur¬poses. Sampling was well defined in Taggart's Handbook as "the opera¬tion of removing a part convenient in size for testing, from a whole which is of much greater bulk, in such a way that the proportion and distribution of the quality to be tested (e.g., specific gravity, metal content, recoverability) are the same in both the whole and the part removed (SAMPLE). The conditions of the more stringent definition, that the sample shall be completely representative of the whole as regards all aspects save bulk, are practically never fulfilled when heterogenous mineral mixtures are sampled." Taggart's Handbook of Mineral Dressing, Section 19, "Sampling and Testing," continues to be a very useful compendium of principles and techniques, particularly as applied to manual methods for han¬dling samples. In the intervening years since its last revision, substan¬tial progress has been made in both the theory and the techniques; thus, this current contribution is designed to be an extension of the earlier work, yet complete enough to provide procedural guidelines to methods of continuing validity. Although basic principles of testing remain unchanged, the meth¬ods of applying those principles have undergone great change. New testing equipment has become available, yielding a greater precision of results. Testing methods have been refined which, in many cases, allows for a valid scale up of flowsheet designs without the necessity of costly pilot or prototype plant development. Justification for a Sampling and Testing Program* The proper evaluation of a mineral property is a complicated process. It often is done on a team basis with the exploration geologist, mining engineer, mineral process engineer (extractive metallurgist), economist, and product utilizer (ceramist, chemical engineer, chemist, metallurgist, etc.) all represented. The mineral processing engineer is a key member because he can provide a go no-go answer to the question, "Can this ore be processed economically?" In addition, his judgment on the response of even the initial sample to processing can be an invaluable guide to the proposed process and its mutations. Since the capital investment and operating costs are so sensitive to the type of process used, the judgment of the mineral processing engineer forms an important part of the early evaluation of the profitability of a new mining venture. This early estimation of the processing approach is all the more important since, for some metalliferous ores, the capital investment for mill, smelter, water supply, and tailings disposal exceeds the cost of the mine. At present, for commodities such as coal, the reverse is true. There is a smaller capital investment for the coal preparation plant than for the mine. In general, both the capital and operating costs escalate very rapidly in the following order: gravity concentration of alluvial deposits (e.g., dredging), gravity concentration of lode ores, flotation, simple hydrometallurgical processes, and complicated hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical processes. The latter two processes may cost 100 to 1,000 times more per ton treated than processing of a simple alluvial deposit. This dictates that the valuable mineral be concentrated as much as possible to minimize the total tonnage treated in the more expensive operations. Within each of these ore-processing categories there is a wide range of process sophistication and hence of capital and operating costs. Perhaps the greatest variations are in the chemical processing of ores. These range from the simple leaching of a copper waste dump to very sophisticated hydrometallurgical processing of ores in increasing order of cost. Because the overall cost of a mining venture is so sensitive to the process selected, it is essential that the mineral¬ processing engineer evaluate the ore in the initial stages of the development of an ore body. As better samples become available, he must continually revise his estimate of the process to be employed. The sampling and testing process must be a necessary and continuing activity throughout the life of a project. One fundamental aspect of nearly all mineral deposits is the inherent variability of the mineral assemblage and composition. A utopian goal of any processing plant is to have the process so flexible and so well-defined that an automatic process control system can optimize the economic recovery at all times. Since this is rarely possible, a continuing or at least a periodic testing program is desirable. Variables to be considered are: 1) Ore body inconsistencies. 2) Zonal variations. 3) Feed variations from mining plan or methods. 4) Variable performance of processing units due to wear. 5) Seasonal or other changes affecting processing conditions such as water quality, temperature, etc. 6) Changing market conditions for product quality or byproducts. 7) Technological advances in processing methods or equipment. 8) Increasing demands for environmental control. 9) Changing economics of competitive processes, of supplies, of capital investment vs. labor costs, etc. Sampling Procedures Preliminary Guidelines for Sampling Ore Deposit Studies. t At a very early stage, it is essential that the mineral processing engineer receive a sample of the ore. This may be a portion of the diamond drill core or a split from the trench, pit, churn drill, channel, or sheet sample. Even a grab sample may have some value, but it should be selected by the mining engineer or exploration geologist to be as representative of the ore body as possible within his best judgment. The sample delivered to the process engineer should have been subjected to as little prior crushing as is practical since fine sizes are difficult to concentrate. In addition, finely ground ores are readily oxidized and thus may give misleading test results. Furthermore, ground samples may make it impossible to eval¬uate either the comminution or the coarse-gravity concentration pro¬cesses. For an initial evaluation, a good deal may often be learned from a sample of only a few pounds if that is all that is available. To obtain the maximum information from a sample, its selection should be carefully discussed with the mineral processing engineer. In addi¬tion to being as representative as possible, the mineralogically distinct samples should be carefully segregated rather than composited. Since drastically different processes are often needed to process samples of differing mineralogy, considerable care and time must be exercised during this sample collection step. The segregation of samples showing gross mineralogical differences, such as the oxide caping on a sulfide deposit or a laterized zone, is easy. It is the more subtle changes in mineralogy that can often elude the field man. Yet these differences are often sufficient to dictate that an entirely different type of process be used. Obviously, the selection of these initial samples for ore testing and mineralogical studies requires that it be done by a man of consider¬able experience and judgment. While the mining engineer or field geologist is collecting these samples, he should also note and convey to the processing engineer such details as water quality and availabil¬ity, terrain, potential mill location, tailings-disposal areas, case of transportation, etc. As the property is developed with additional drill holes, adits, etc., larger and more representative samples will be required to develop the ore-processing flowsheet more adequately. If pilot-plant studies are required, a very large sample may be necessary. Though the type and amount of sample collected for flowsheet development investigations vary widely, gathering a representative sample of the ore body is a prime requisite for any process development effort. This paper describes work done by Placer Dome Technical Services Limited, a subsidiary of Barrick Gold, and Nautilus Minerals Inc. in support of the conceptual design of a subsea mining system. It describes an overall concept design plus specific studies into mechanical excavation at depth. The concept design includes one or more subsea excavators connected to a suction riser, which transports the cut material to a shipboard dewatering and offloading system. A multi-phase investigation was performed into the mechanical excavation of seafloor massive sulphides at depths of around 1600m. Rock samples were recovered and tested for rock properties and cutting behaviour. A small pick drum cutter was procured and tested on a representative concrete slab in a lab and tested again while submerged in a test tank. Finally the cutter was tested on a massive sulphide ore body at 1600m depth. The cutting performance results, e.g. pick forces and specific energies, should provide valuable input to the design of future full scale subsea mining systems.

South Arturo is a “Carlin-type”, breccia-hosted, oxide gold deposit located at the north end of the Carlin Trend. The discovery hole was drilled in July 2005 from mine dumps 1,000 feet south of the Dee open pit. Discovery hole (BD-72) encountered a cumulative 245 feet @ 0.056 opt Au beneath 850 feet of post mineral Tertiary Carlin Formation. Oxidation extends to depths greater than 2,000 feet in the deposit area. The deposit is presently in definition drilling stage with approximately 190,000 feet of drilling completed to date. A resource estimate is in progress. This paper will focus on the discovery and descriptive characteristics of the mineralization.
