In order to evaluate the relationships between weathering and durability and strength of rock samples from the Goathill North rock pile at the Molycorp Questa mine, NM, we conducted slake durability and point load tests. Slake durability index (ID2) values ranged from 84 to 98%. Point load strength index (Is50) averaged for all rock units ranged from 1.1 to 5.7 MPa. Results show a slight positive trend between ID2 and paste pH. Two populations of data are distinguishable when ID2 is plotted versus the percentages of chlorite, illite and internal friction angle. In general, Is50 values increase toward the interior of the rock pile. Preliminary conclusions indicate that the durability and strength of the rock pile material generally increase toward the interior of the rock pile. Pre-rock pile alteration and post-rock pile weathering history have affected the durability of the GHN rock pile samples.

Since the initiation of continuous vacuum filtration over a half a century ago, control of the performance of these units has been largely in the hands of the plant operators, Obviously there has been the introduction of variable speed drives, adjustable speed feed slurry agitation, vacuum control, etc. However, control of , filtration rate, cake moisture content, dissolved solids recovery by cake washing and dryness of solids where thermal drying is practiced is primarily up to the operators judgment and the settings he imposes on the controls he regulates, - filter cycle time, submergence, vacuum level, filter medium condition, wash water- rate, and other such factors. While this may seem to indicate that good operators are a paramount necessity, and certainly always desirable, a considerably more vital factor is a properly designed filter and filter station for the particular application. With improper design, highly skilled operator control will still leave much to be desired in the way of process performance. On the other hand, with correct design and application, the operator can easily and quickly control normal plant surges and quality variations within the flow sheet. Due to the growing complexity and inter dependency between the various processing steps in the modern flow sheet as well as the rising costs of capital investment, labor, maintenance, and losses involved with off quality product or insufficient recovery, automatic or inherent performance control of many of the unit operations within the metallurgical mill must be achieved. Continuous filtration should and can be susceptible to such control. However, as every instrument engineer knows, before control and automation can be achieved, a basic understanding of the operation is mandatory. This is primarily due to three factors. First, as in so many control applications, it may not be possible or feasible to measure the factor that it is desired to control. Thus, secondary variables that influence the major factor are substituted for control purposes. Secondly, it is always desirable to take advantage of any ?self-regulation? within the operation being performed on the equipment. In so doing, not only will automatic control be facilitated, but instrumentation is minimized while experiencing most efficient operation. Finally, automatic control is not a cure-all for improper process and equipment design and application. Hanging instruments on such an operation can be compared to constructing a sizable building on sand, Results will be disappointing.

This thermomechanical analysis used the finite element method to investigate the behavior of crushed salt backfill in a waste disposal room situated in a salt dome repository. The first of two objectives was to determine the transient temperature rise and degree of thermomechanical consolidation that occur in the backfill as a function of drillhole depths. The second objective involved the evaluation of closure due to salt creep of unlined emplacement drillholes and the determination of pressure on steel sleeve liners in the drillholes should liners become necessary for canister retrieval. The retrievability period was considered to extend for 25 years after waste emplacement. The canisters were assumed to contain ten-year old high level waste with a thermal output of 4.3 kW at the time of emplacement.

COM Energy, Inc., a subsidiary of Occidental Petroleum Corporation, has constructed a 1.6 million hectoliter-per-year COM plant in Jacksonville, Florida. COM will be distributed to customers in the region as a substitute for fuel oil presently burned in boilers and kilns. As the market for COM grows, COM Energy, Inc. expects to build additional units both in this country and overseas. This paper addresses the overall status and technical aspects of the project, focusing on the facilities for COM production and utilization.

To develop strategic and tactical strategies to manage seismic hazard in a safe and economic manner, it is necessary to understand the spatial and temporal distribution of mine wide seismogenic behavior. Global mine-scale numerical stress modelling provides a means to forward predict seismic susceptibility thereby facilitating informed decision making for the development and implementation of strategic and tactical risk mitigation measures. To make forward predictions of hazard susceptibility using global stress models with reasonable confidence, it is necessary to rigorously calibrate numerical stress models to the observed history of ground reaction. This paper demonstrates quantifiable methods for calibrating numerical models and developing probabilistic prediction criterion using seismic data. The appropriate applications of model inputs (including boundary conditions, constitutive models and material parameterization) specific to global mine-scale modelling are also discussed. Lastly, this paper demonstrates how the calibration process adds value not only to informed decision making, but also to the improved understanding of site geomechanical conditions; including enhanced identification of geotechnical domains and mechanical indicators required for seismic mechanism domaining.

A spatial modeling technique based on the Bayesian neural network (BNN) is proposed. Incorporation of the Bayesian method for posterior probability of the output parameter helps calculate the uncertainty associated with the estimate. Parameters of the BNN model were selected using a grid search algorithm. The expected value and the variance of block support were calculated by Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling of the posterior distribution at discretized points within the block. The BNN model was validated by applying it to the Walker Lake data set and comparing the results with ordinary kriging results. The comparison revealed that the proposed BNN method performs marginally better than ordinary kriging. The variance map is less smooth than with ordinary kriging, and the proportional effect is less in the BNN-based model than in the ordinary kriging model. The developed BNN model was applied to the Coho block of a placer gold deposit in Nome, AK. Results reveal that the BNN model is globally biased for the Coho block and underestimates the sample mean. The grade volume curve was developed by calculating the block mean and block variance after discretizing the block into a number of points and applying the BNN model to each discretized point.

"From 1998-2002 the world's leading mining and metals companies developed the Global Mining Initiative (GMI) to understand their industry's role in the transition to sustainable development and to ensure its long-term contribution to sustainable development (SD). Since then, the industry has come a long way: For example, operational safety and health have improved significantly, environmental management systems and impact assessments have become the norm, community relations have been established, many mining companies report annually on their contributions to SD and the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) has taken on the recommendations of the GMI as an industry association. However, since the GMI the concept of sustainable development has been evolving from a rather generic and loose definition (“weak sustainability”), to an absolute and strict definition of sustainability, based on the boundaries of our planet (“strong sustainability”). Similarly, other concepts such as corporate social responsibility (CSR) have evolved and even deviated from their initial intentions. This paper presents results from a literature review looking at how far this transition has moved from a scientific debate towards becoming mainstream. Furthermore, it explores, by using qualitative comparison analysis, if the current efforts of the large mining companies are still sufficient or if the industry is again at risk of falling behind societal expectations and hence should once again come together - for a GMI 2.0 - in order to update its approach. We conclude that the mining industry, whilst in a “weak sustainability” position and behind the peer group on climate change and natural capital considerations, is aligned with current societal expectations, expressed through the Sustainable Development Goals, and therefore there is no need for a GMI 2.0 at present."

The influence of bacterial growth phase on the flotation behavior of malachite has been investigated in a well-controlled Hallimond tube system. The microflotation tests were conducted for malachite (45?53 µm) using different amounts (bulk phase concentration=1×108?5×109 cells/mL) of Rhodococcus opacus (R. opacus) as a collector, which was grown at mid-exponential versus stationary phase, at a constant speed (340 rpm), pH (6), and malachite-bacteria interaction and flotation time (each 10 min). Hug differences between R. opacus cells in mid-exponential and stationary phase was observed from the results for electrophoretic mobility and flotation tests. Specifically, the isoelectric point of the cells in the stationary phase was lower than that in the mid-exponential phase, suggesting that the amount and distribution of surface functional groups onto cell surfaces are likely different. Additionally, the cells in stationary phase led to significant increase in the flotability compared to those in mid-exponential phase over the background bacterial concentration level of 1×108?5×109 cells/mL. Furthermore, the flotation efficiency tended to increase with increasing cell dosage for stationary phase cells while no distinct difference was observed for mid-exponential cells.

In typical cases, however, some standard procedures apply. Controls on a construction project are best described only in general terms. They should apply to the total job and can be most effective only when all pieces of the job organization fit together to support a control system for the entire project. Controls are more than a system of reports, schedules, and tabulations-they are the result of an integrated organization dedicated to getting a job done on time and within budget. One of the most important aspects of project control is the construction organization. It must include the right people, facilities, and site equipment, as well as the authority to do what's necessary to accomplish the work. This should be set up to function with as little involvement from off-site or the home office as possible. However, the jobsite construction group must work within established policies and guidelines and is subject to continuous off-site or home office monitoring. In other words, the job-site leaders need to have a clear definition of their responsibility, their authority, and the necessary people and equipment to make things happen. Numerous reactor designs for biological sulfate reduction have been reported. Fluidized-bed bioreactors (FBR) can efficiently retain biomass and allow high mass transfer and reaction rates. This work reviews the development of various sulfate-reducing FBR processes for treating acidic metal- and sulfate-containing waters and recovering metals from bioleaching liquors. The FBR process performance was evaluated with continuous flow experiments under various operational conditions: fluidization rates, influent pH values, metal, sulfate and salt concentrations, hydraulic retention times, electron and carbon sources, and temperatures. Substrate utilization and sulfide inhibition kinetics were determined with batch FBR-kinetic experiments. An artificial neural network (ANN) model was used to predict the performance of the FBR. Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) were characterized in FBRs with molecular and culture-based approaches with the aim to gain a better understating of the bioprocesses. Based on the studies, FBRs are well suited for the combined removal of metals, acidity and sulfate from water.

Exploration of the Big Island trona beds by Stauffer Chemical Company started early in 1959. During the intervening time, Stauffer Chemical Company of Wyoming has developed a Large trona mine in this southwestern Wyoming area and has increased the over-all production of soda ash from natural sources by nearly one-half million tons per year. The trona, which is a hydrated sodium bicarbonate mineral, lies some 800 feet into the sedimentary rocks of the Green River formation. Present production is approximately 850,000 tons per year being extracted by means of a room-and-pillar mining system. Conventional coal mining equipment is used with some modification to accommodate local conditions. The mined and crushed ore is hoisted to the surface and processed in an on-site refinery. Refined soda ash is shipped to widely separated locations in covered hopper railraod cars. Construction in progress at Stauffer's plant will double the present capacity.

Construction of a new transportation link frequently requires crossing under an existing highway or railroad. Although traffic diversions may permit a cut and cover structure to be built, ‘zero impact’ tunnel solutions are becoming increasingly popular. The vertical clearance between the new tunnel structure and the existing highway or tracks may be very low; sometimes less than two meters. This leaves little room for error since any ground loss can rapidly translate into surface settlement. Problems can be avoided by maintaining the stability of the tunnel face and by minimizing ground movement around the tunnel lining. This paper examines construction methods that have been used to construct short tunnels with shallow cover, and highlights factors to be considered for future projects.

This article updates a series of articles about the ITA prepared in 2007 by Harvey Parker, former president of the ITA, in anticipation of the next WTC in San Francisco.ITA accomplishes its goals through a range of activities that includes organizing conferences, workshops and meetings, working group and committee studies, training, experiments and other activities. "Recirculation is prohibited in many coal mining countries because of the fear that the re-use of return air would allow the build-up of air contaminants at the workings. The incorrect design and location of a booster fan in any ventilation network can create unsafe condition due to recirculation. The current approach to investigating recirculation using simulation software requires manual effort which becomes tedious in a complex and a large network. An algorithm-based C++ program was designed to detect the recirculation in a booster fan ventilation networks. This program needed an input file prepared from output file generated by any ventilation simulator. This program created an output file for recirculation. This program demonstrated the strong capability to detect the recirculation in a sample network and a coal mine ventilation network. The outcomes of this program were documented in this paper. INTRODUCTION The proper design and location of booster fans eliminate the safety hazards associated with high main fan pressure. Conversely, the incorrect design of booster fans in any ventilation network can create unsafe conditions due to uncontrolled recirculation. The proper utilization of a booster fan derives benefits to reduce the main fan pressure, leakage, and consequently ventilation cost especially with high resistance network due to deep and extensive working area in a mine. However installation of booster fan may create uncontrolled recirculation, if it is not sized and located properly with respect to main fan. Recirculation is prohibited in many coal mining countries because of the fear that the reuse of return air would allow the build-up of air contaminants at the workings. Therefore, it is imperative to check the recirculation while designing and operating booster fan for a ventilation network. This paper deals with an algorithm based C++ program to detect the recirculation in a booster fan ventilation networks. This program was implemented to detect the recirculation in a sample network and a coal mine network. STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The currently available ventilation simulation programs do not give much information about recirculation for the generated solution (fan pressures). The current approach to investigating recirculation using simulation software requires manual effort, i.e., traversing from node to node in the output network by the simulator while keeping tracks of all the nodes that form recirculation paths. This is an easy task in a simple ventilation network, but it becomes tedious and sometimes very confusing in a complex and large network. Moreover, the presence of multiple recirculation paths makes the manual effort more complex and difficult, especially in separating multiple loops that are connected together. Thus, there is a need for a more efficient program that will detect and quantify the recirculation efficiently, for the generated fan pressures. A program is developed to detect the recirculation(s) in a network."

In response to Public Law 95-87 (SMCRA), Colorado promulgated regulations governing the mining of Coal. These regulations require the prediction, monitoring and mitigation of "material damage" caused by subsidence. All permitted underground coal mines within Colorado have approved subsidence programs. Preliminary monitoring results indicate the subsidence mechanical predictions have been sufficiently accurate to preclude material subsidence damage. The State of Colorado has developed a practical approach to regulating subsidence, which stresses monitoring verification of predicted subsidence phenomena. However, shortcomings exist in our ability to precisely predict the secondary consequences of subsidence, including effects to structures, the hydrologic balance and the environment. Lack of accuracy in predicting these secondary consequences results in uncertainty, necessitating conservatism in permitting. To avoid increasingly stringent permit restrictions, future research should emphasize the secondary consequences of subsidence.

When deciding to deploy rescue teams underground the decision makers need to be able to determine that there won?t be an explosion whilst the rescue teams are underground. Previously general body concentrations in areas likely to be travelled were compared to explosive limits on a one off basis with no formal process looking at trends or other areas. A new approach is being adopted that takes into account the rate of change of gas concentrations with triggers set to enable a withdrawal of personnel prior to a possible explosion and influences such a barometric pressure changes. This paper explains the rationale behind the changes made and the advantages and implications of adopting such an approach.
