The recently completed In-Pit Crushing and Conveying Project at Phelps Dodge's Morenci Mine is rated among the world's leading materials handling projects. The operation involves the crushing and transport of more than 109,000 tonnes per day of copper ore, utilizing regenerative conveyors capable of providing over 5.5 megawatts (7,000 hp) of equivalent electrical energy. Traveling grate is a widely used process for iron ore pellet production; however, the thermal state of pellets in drying section is still unclear. In this study, the temperature distribution of drying section was investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Based on the calculated results of airflow velocity, space temperature distribution, and the temperature change of pellets, it concluded that there is a coupling effect in drying section in traveling grate. The gas with higher temperature in DDD transfers heat to UDD through the gap of the insulation board, and the temperature gradient of the pellet bed changed before reaching the insulation board. The characteristics of pellet bed expected to appear in DDD was displayed in UDD in advance. Moreover, a contrast experiment was conducted to verify the model.

The McKinley Mine is a large strip operation sup-plying coal to several utility and industrial customers. The mine reserve comprises many coal seams of varying quality and thickness. Erosion of the terrain has created coal out-crop lines that are encountered frequently with associated deviations in quality. Due to the complex nature of the coal reserve and the various customer quality requirements, coal quality control is a primary consideration and a constant challenge at the McKinley Mine. This paper will discuss the practices employed to ensure that the available coal meets contract specifications.

The intent of geomorphic landform design is to mimic the function of the natural landscape. In a surface mine reclamation application, geomorphic landform design has the potential to mitigate stream loss. This research quantified features of reference landforms and performed computer modeling of a conceptual valley-fill design using geomorphic landform principles. A design was created using published design parameters with a software design tool (Carlson Natural Regrade with GeoFluv). Three additional designs, incorporating field-obtained regional geomorphic landform parameters, were completed and resulted in a geomorphic landform design specific to southern West Virginia. This work illustrates the importance of field determination of the ridge to head-of-channel input and drainage density parameters. Values of ridge to head-of-channel distance measured in this study were consistently an order of magnitude greater than software recommended values (SRV); SRV = 24 m (80 ft) versus field= 220 m (720 ft). Similarly, for the drainage density parameter, the software recommended range is 6 to 9 km-1 (80-120 ft/ac). The field measurements for central Appalachia quantified the drainage density to range from 5 to 5.3 km-1 (67-70 ft/ac). This affects Appalachian valley-fill stream construction by making the stream lengths shorter and the land slopes steeper with straighter headwater channels compared with areas in the southwestern United States. While the application of geomorphic landform design to surface mine sites presents challenges, this work provides support for future applications.

"Collecting mineral resources from the seabed using a seafloor crawling robot is the firststep in the mining operation. The second-step is lifting the collected ore up to the water surface. For lifting through a riser pipe, prevention of pipe clogging (flow assurance) and economic and eco-friendly up-transferring is of the utmost concern.During collection of mineral ores, the production rate can be highly variable because of the variability in the distribution of the mineral deposit, variations in seafloor topography, fluctuations robot speed, and variations in performance of the mining robot, etc. Direct transfer of the collected ore to the riser pipe might cause unpredictable and serious problems such as over-loading of the lift pump, reduction in the life of the equipment, pipe clogging, severe increase of down-time, critical damage of equipment, further propagation of damages, and total failure after all.As a counter measure to these potential problems, a buffer station has been adopted, which is capable of storing the collected ore for a certain time and simultaneously regulating the transfer of the ore into the riser pipe. A pilot buffer has been developed by KRISO/KIOST (see Fig. 1)."

The reverse cationic flotation is the most widely utilized flotation method for concentrating iron ore. In such a process quartz is often floated with ether amines (R?O(CH2)3?NH2) partially neutralized with acetic acid. However, it is well known that the cationic flotation of hematite does not work well if a certain amount of slime is present in ore slurry. To improve flotation performance, starch is often added to the flotation feed to selectively flocculate and depress the iron minerals and sodium silicate is used to disperse the silica gangue. The present study was conducted to improve the flotation efficiency of iron ore flotation by use of a new type of depressant for clay and iron minerals, i.e., GP clay binder. It is postulated that the GP clay binder minimizes slime adsorption on quartz and hematite particles by agglomerating clay particles to reduce their surface area. It is further theorized that the clay binder helps depress hematite flotation due to its unique chelating ability to iron ion. The results from this study clearly show that the GP clay binder is an effective depressant in iron ore flotation. When it was used as a substitute for corn starch, it increased concentrate grade from 60.78% to 67.67% and increased iron recovery from 71.96% to 72.90%. The combined use of GP clay binder with corn starch produced even better flotation performance, increasing concentrate grade to 67.08% and iron recovery to 78.15% simultaneously. The Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) operates two water-intakes in Lake Mead, located 20 miles east of Las Vegas, Nevada. Severe drought has caused decline in lake level by 85 feet since 2000 and future declines are expected. SNWA will construct a third deep-water intake to ensure existing water system capacity. This paper describes expected construction challenges for the new project that consists of: an intake structure and tunnel beneath the lake, pumping station, pipeline to connect existing treatment facility, and interconnecting underground adits. The project will be completed in the year 2012 for total estimated cost of approximately $600 million.

Increasing use of pressurized-face tunnel boring machines in North America has produced a similar increase in the application of precast concrete tunnel linings. Where a pressurized TBM is needed, immediate ground support and ground water pressure resistance is also required. A segmental lining installed within the TBM tail shield provides the only available means of providing such a sealed lining. This paper addresses new developments in North America in lining applications and design. For the purposes of this paper, a precast concrete tunnel lining is defined as a tunnel lining constructed using precast concrete segments that are assembled into a lining ring. The lining rings are connected adjacent to each other to form a tunnel lining. Each segment has a sealing gasket around it so that when the lining is completed, it provides a fully waterproof lining system. The ring is erected within the tail shield of the TBM and the annular gap around the ring is filled with grout as the machine moves forward. The ring is not expanded and normally provides the finished lining of the tunnel with no requirement for a second pass lining. The TBM has a series of hydraulic rams that push on the leading edge of the segmental lining to provide the sole system of forward propulsion for the machine. The rings are tapered, being longer on one side than the other. This allows the rings to be installed either on a curve or in a straight line depending on the rotational position of the rings.

A process does not have higher capacity than what can pass through its bottleneck. Acknowledging this, and with the goal to optimize production at a minimum investment, one can use existing equipment, modify the process flow and make a few strategic capital investments. Automatic setting regulation is a technology that allows balanced crusher performance matching minute changes in feed material characteristics. The system makes it possible to utilize the crushers fully at all times. It also continuously and completely compensates for manganese liner wear.

R.C. Rex, Jr. V. Rajaram's paper does not accurately reflect the status of Eastern oil shale development as it stands today. Today, there are numerous firms and research organizations pursuing development of the Eastern oil shale resource. Details of the current projects can be found in the symposium proceedings for the 1985 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium held in Lexington, KY, in November 1985. Additionally, the comparison of the Paraho and HYTORT processes is invalid because the HYTORT process design used it not an accurate representation of the HYTORT process. I will briefly address this point. It is disconcerting to see the author reference hydroretorting work conducted at the Institute of Gas Technology (IGT) (circa 1978) in the introduction, which indicates hydroretorting (the HYTORT process concept) yields of up to 250% of the Fischer Assay oil yield, and then turn around and base the remainder of the paper on the 1981 "Synthetic Fuels From Eastern Oil Shale Report," which depicts the HYTORT process as yielding only 115% of Fischer Assay. Indeed, work conducted at IGT to 1981 indicates commercial oil yields for the HYTORT process would be in the range of 200% to 210% of Fischer Assay. A more thorough literature search by the author would have yielded a 1981 publication by Schora et al., entitled "Update on the HYTORT Process" presented at the Symposium on Synthetic Fuels From Oil Shale in Nashville, TN, October 1981. This paper thoroughly discusses the shortcomings of the referenced study with respect to the HYTORT process. For the interested reader, I can also recommend a June 1984 report entitled "An Economic Comparison of Five Process Concepts for Using Eastern Oil Shale," published by Los Alomos National Laboratory (LA-10106-MS, Parkinson et al., NTIS No. DE84-015981). This study applies a realistic HYTORT design (circa 1982) and indicates that HYTORT is the most econom¬ical method of processing Eastern oil shales (about $20/bbl less than Paraho). Additionally, completion of the HYTORT feasibility study in June 1983 by Phillips Petroleum Co., Bechtel Group Inc., HYCRUDE Corp., and IGT has resulted in development of designs that will make the use of HYTORT on Eastern oil shales even more economic. HYCRUDE Corp., a second-tier subsidiary of IGT, is involved in commercialization and licensing of the HYTORT process and is active in efforts to develop the Eastern oil shale resource. As such, I am disappointed to see outdated material that has the potential for adversely affecting development of Eastern oil shale resources published in MINING ENGINEERING. I can only hope that this response will serve to mitigate any negative opinions that may have been formed. Today, activity in commercializing Eastern oil shales dominates the oil shale scene in the US and indicates a realization of the potential for these shales. Reply by V. Rajaram I appreciate the updates on the HYTORT process provided by R.C. Rex, Jr. I hope that Hycrude's work will lead to the funding of a pilot plant to demonstrate that yields of greater than 200% of Fischer Assay can be achieved in a commercial plant using eastern US oil shales.

The Zagros long tunnel is one of the main components of Sirvan water transfer project in western Iran. It is approximately 48 km in length and consisted of two lots. The second 26 km lot of this tunnel is under construction by a 6.73 m diameter double shield (DS) TBM. The tunnel passes through several formations with wide range rock mass qualities. During the tunnel alignment, changes in rock quality were highly frequent from poor to very good. The encountered geological conditions required TBM operation to change frequently from hard rock to soft, dry to flowing, sticky to nonsticky ground (and vice versa), more often than expected. In the course of tunneling, the machine has encountered nearly many adverse geologic conditions. The most important problems have been sudden high volume water inflow into the tunnel, sticky ground, and gas seepage, all of which resulted in reduced TBM advance rates. This study will high-light two difficult ground conditions including large water ingress and sticky ground and also the related problems encountered by the TBM along 8 km of excavated tunnel. In sticky grounds, cleaning of the clogged cutter head caused many delays and contributed to additional downtime. Application of some operational modifications, including decreased TBM thrust showed satisfactory results in such cases. While reduced thrust resulted in reduced penetration rate, but the overall TBM advance was greatly improved by the increase utilization rate and elimination of down time related to cleaning of the head. To cope with high water inflow, application of preventive measures such as pre-grouting has proved to be a more efficientsolution. The sealing of ground water inflow also decreased seepage of dangerous H2S gas and other chemicals such as hydrocarbons accompanying the groundwater.

SX operators have conducted extensive shut-downs and repairs over the years to mitigate solution leaks from failed stainless steel false floors and walls in rectangular mixersettler mix boxes. Hydrodynamic modeling using first principles and constitutive equations of fluid mechanics can inform an efficient structural redesign sufficient to eliminate the plate failures. Updated mix boxes have been performing without failure for over a decade. Given the extensive construction of the original Holmes and Narver mixer-settler design throughout the world that includes stainless steel lined rectangular primary and auxiliary mix boxes, SX operators may benefit from the approach, eliminating costly shutdowns, leaks to containment, and hazardous repairs.

For a state whose roots are in mining, most Colorado residents probably do not realize that the industry still contributes heavily to the state’s economy. In 2005, the industry contributed, directly and indirectly, about $8 billion to the state’s economy, according to the Colorado Mining Association (CMA). It employed nearly 10,000 people at mines and support businesses. And the mining industry in Colorado is one of the highest paying occupations in the state, averaging about $80,000 a year in wages and benefits. The state’s coal mining industry produced nearly 36 Mt (40 million st) of coal in 2005, valued at $800 million, the CMA said. That was seventh in the nation. And Colorado’s only major gold mine produced 10.2 t (329,000 oz) last year, valued at $124 million. That was third in the nation. And Phelps Dodge’s Henderson Mine produced about 12.7 kt (28 million lbs) of molybdenum, valued at $350 million. Colorado is the largest molybdenum producing state in the nation.

Conventional tailings slurry contains a significant amount of water, and water management is key to ensuring the stability of a tailings storage facility (TSF). Simply reducing the water content in the slurry before discharging it from the mill could be an effective way to improve TSF water management. This study investigated the potential for using an environmentally friendly polymer as a new drag reduction agent (DRA) to reduce frictional pressure loss and also conserve water. It entailed conducting pipe loop tests to assess the polymer’s effect on pressure loss in tailings flow and then applying the test results to validate a numerical model using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The model was also used to determine the polymer’s optimal concentrations at given solid concentrations and flow rates, its effect on energy efficiency for tailings transportation, and its potential for saving water. A case study for a mid-sized, hard-rock mine with a throughput of 50,000 t/day found that the solid concentration could be increased from 30 to 45% with no pressure loss by applying 1996 m3 of the polymer per day. Adding the polymer also resulted in water savings of 57,552 m3/day. The results of this study demonstrated the potential for using the new DRA not only to improve TSF stability but also to save water.

Labrador City is located in the southwestern portion of Newfoundland-Labrador, approximately 965 kilometers north-east of Montreal. The mine and beneficiation complex of the Iron Ore Company of Canada, known as the Carol Project, is situated 535 metres above sea level in a climatic region characterized by cold winters and short, cool summers. History The iron Ore Company of Canada commenced work in the area in 1949, however, it was not until 1958 that the decision was made to proceed with mining operations. The ore body consists of Specular Hematite (Fe203) and Magnetite (Fe304) with small quantities of Limonite and Geothite. The average grade of the ore bodies is 39% iron.

Bio-epigenetic sulphur deposits occur in Pecos, Reeves and Culberson Counties of far West Texas. Sulfate reducrng bacteria, utilizing hydrocarbons as energy, transformed gypsum into replacement limestone and hydrogen sulfide. Hydrogen sulfide, retained in the porosities of the replacement limestone, was subsequently oxidized by highly oxygenated groundwaters, and native sulphur precipitated. West Texas sulphur was first recognized at surface exposures by William P. Blake, a geologist attached to the Captain Pope Military/ Scientific Expedition of 1854. Attempts were made in the early 1900's to mine these sulphur vent exposures by a retort method, but the ventures met with little success. In 1967, Duval discovered a large sulphur deposit near some of the old sulphur works in Culberson County. Duval also extended a small sulphur deposit in Pecos County. The Frasch process, developed for producing sulphur from Gulf Coast salt domes, proved successful in West Texas type sulphur deposits also. However, modifications of the process were necessary to provide economical and efficient sulphur recovery from the varied ore modes. West Texas conditions and logistics require the ultimate in productivity to be competitive in the domestic and foreign sulphur markets. Several companies, in addition to Duval, are producing or have produced sulphur in West Texas. As of the first of June 1984, a total of 29.4 million long tons of sulphur had been produced west of the Pecos -aver. Duval produced more than 88 percent of that total.

High pressure grinding mills have been successfully introduced in the industry. They offer the possibilities for capacity increase of existing plants and reduction of operating costs. Further metallurgical advantages in gold and copper are possible. The plants in operation are running in different applications and modes of operation. They can be installed in a combination with SAG and ball mills or in a stand-alone mode. In combination with other grinding mills, it has to be investigated how the HPGR can be installed to reach the full efficiency. The Bureau of Mines investigated pegmatite and granite formations at Copper Mountain, Fremont County, Wyoming, for recovery of tantalum and niobium. Sampling of surface exposures identified about 1.27 mega tonne of pegmatite resource material ranging between 0.02 and 0.04% Ta20, and 0.007% Hb20,. Beneficiation studies were conducted involving coarse-grained and fine grained pegmatite samples. Over 80% recovery of the coarse-grained tantalite was achieved in a concentrate averaging over 45% combined tantalum-niobium oxide. Lower concentrate grades and recoveries resulted from the treatment of fine-grained pegmatite.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research on the feasibility of incorporating in situ stope leaching into active underground metal mines. Stope leaching, a modified in situ leaching technique, proposes to recover metals by leaching fragmented ore in existing underground openings and collecting and processing the metal-bearing solution to recover the valuable metals. If leaching solutions escape from the stope, either through geologic discontinuities or highly permeable zones in the rock, valuable metals dissolved in the solution may be lost. Escaping solutions may also contaminate ground waters. Consequently, in fractured rock, the characteristics of the fractures in the vicinity of the leaching stope must be understood before introducing actual leach solutions into the stope. Effectively characterizing a rock mass requires the integration of several disciplines including structural geology, borehole geophysics, hydrology, geochemistry, and mining engineering. This paper will focus on the general geologic and geophysical techniques that can be used to characterize the rock mass at an underground simulated stope leaching site. The results of several geophysical logging methods, tested at the site, are compared to the geologic core descriptions. Then, the? effectiveness of the different geophysical techniques in delineating fracture zones will be assessed. Knowledge gained through the geologic and geophysical analyses can be used to supplement results from hydrologic testing. This information can also be utilized in designing blast patterns and developing strategies for controlling or blocking movement of escaping leach solutions.
