The vision-based approach to process control involving fine particles in harsh on-line environments is discussed in this paper. The sensor equipment at the process location, consisting of a light source and a CCD camera provides RS-170 B&W video output. The video can be seen on a process monitor in the control room and is sent to a computer based Vision Processor. The Vision Processor contains a video digitizer and Canty developed software that extracts process information. The iron mine application controls thickener agent feed rate and thus settling pond overflow clarity. The sensor is mounted in the overflow flume of the outdoor settling pond and is used year around in the Minnesota weather. Alternate control system needs a low flow water sample which is subject to freezing in winter. The computer based vision processor provides 4-20 mA analog outputs for real time control as well as file archive for a history record.

Recovery of cyanide from mill tailings can be conducted to lower the overall cost of precious metals extraction, while lowering cyanide concentrations in mill discharges and potentially eliminating the need to chemically destroy cyanide. Recent applications of cyanide recovery based on acidification­volatilization-reneutralization (A VR) technology have elimi­nated the need for cyanide destruction and substantially increased the profitability at several gold and silver operations. Recent developments in the technology permits processing of scale-prone and high percent solids pulps while generally affecting cyanide recoveries in excess of 70% to 90%.

The price of copper has gone into the tank. So has gold. Environmental regulations are more restrictive. Global warming has world leaders and environmental groups seeking international regulations to keep the planet from heating up - mostly by restricting the use of fossil fuels. And the US Secretary of the Interior wants to make it more costly -prohibitively so for smaller companies - to mine hard rock metals in the United States. By rights, miners should be carrying around a pessimistic attitude about their industry. But miners are an optimistic lot, always believing that things will improve. That optimism was in evidence in Tucson, AZ in early December, when about 620 miners met at the Double- tree Hotel for the Annual Meeting of the Arizona Conference, put on by SME. Attendees listened as a United States congressman commented on the recent tax cut bill, mining regulations and the continuing need for the mining industry to improve its image in the eyes of the general public. Session speakers discussed how improved technology has made their processing operations at Sierrita and Morenci more efficient and cost-effective.

Genstar's underground mine at Texas, MD experienced a failure of the mine roof and subsequent damage to an underground backfill caused by surface floodwaters. A hydraulic backfilling program was developed in house to stabilize temporary repairs to the mine roof, replace 2300 yards of pneumatically stowed backfill, and complete a permanent repair to the mine roof. A flowable backfill material was developed, tested, and later marketed as the result of experience gained during this project. In addition, Genstar personnel developed backfilling techniques to meet the requirements of the repairs and completed work without the additional expense of non company services or contractors.

INTRODUCTION The Washington Metro is a 98 mile rapid transit system that will serve the District of Columbia, southern Maryland, and northern Virginia. The construction work herein described relates to Section B-1 of this system. The contract for this work was awarded by the Owner, The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, to a joint venture doing business under the name of Ball-Shea-Norair. The partners in this venture were Gordon H. Ball, Inc., Danville, California; J. F. Shea Company, Inc., Walnut Creek, California; and Norair Engineering Corporation, Washington, D. C. The bid price for the project was $33,741,524 with a contract duration of 910 calendar days. Notice to proceed was issued January 5, 1970. The present modified price for the work is $36,866,000 with completion anticipated in July 1974. (About 1,638 days elapsed time.) The work to be done consisted essentially of construction of 3,490 linear feet of cut-and-cover track with side platform, and 600 ft cut-and-cover arch shaped subway stations. Stations are located in Judiciary Square and Eighth & G Street, N. W., areas. Decking of excavation in street areas, maintenance of traffic and utilities, vent and fan shafts, underpinning of court buildings in Judiciary Square and the Smithsonian National Portrait Building, and an electrical substation were included in the contract. Stations were constructed of cast-in-place concrete.

The Indentation Fracture technique is being developed as a tool for use in comminution and mineral liberation analysis. Fracture toughness measurements for a number of mineralogical materials were made and comparisons were drawn between these and properties measured with the Ultrafast Load Cell drop weight apparatus. The technique has also been used as a probe to quantify differences in fracture properties at different areas in the microstructure of a material. In both a Utah limestone and a South African quartzite, material near a grain boundary fractures very differently to that in the bulk. Ongoing work is ultimately aimed at producing a comprehensive fracture model for a multi-mineral system based on its micro-fracture characteristics.

The world's largest grinding mill operates at the Cadia Hill Mine in Australia. Svedala Industries supplied the 12.2-m- (40-ft-) diam, 20-MW Cadia gearless, semiautogenous grinding mill (SAG). This was a leap of more than 40% above the largest operating SAG mill. This article reviews the significant items involved in the development, design, manufacture, installation and operation of this mill. Description of the Cadia project The Cadia Hill Mine is located 25 km (15 miles) southwest of Orange, in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales, Australia. The mining lease covers about 3,100 hm2 (7,660 acres) of the Cadia Valley. The Cadia deposit is a large, homogeneous, low-grade, porphyry-type, gold-copper resource. Current reserves stand at 202 Mt (222 million st), grading 0.73 g/t (0.02 oz/st) gold and 0.17% copper. They contain 146.2 t (4.7 million oz) of gold and 347 Kt (382,500 st) of copper. The operation consists of openpit mining and ore processing to produce gold bullion and a gold/copper concentrate. The operation processes 17 Mt/a (19 millon stpy) of ore to produce 91 kt/a (100,300 stpy) of concentrate and 9.1 t/a (293,000 oz/year) of gold. The plant operates two 12-hour shifts a day and had a targeted availability of 94%. The plant facilities include a copper concentrator, o water supply system, an openpit mine, tailings pipeline and dam, and a concentrate pipeline and dewatering facility located in Blayney, about 35 km (22 miles) from the concentrator. Significant features of the process plant include o primary crusher and stockpile, a reclaim conveyor system feeding, the Cadia SAG mill (Figs. 1 and 2) and two 6.7-m- (22-ft-) diam ball mills (Fig. 3). A portion of the gold is extracted in a gravity circuit. The balance is extracted with the copper in the flotation section of the plant. Concentrate is thickened and piped about 35 km (22 miles) to the filter plant and rail loadout facility located in Blayney. Tailings are pumped to a tailings dam and process water is reclaimed from the tailings dam. The water system is designed to control and capture available runoff from local creeks, and to store these waters in dams and weirs. In addition, a major portion of the water for the process plant is treated effluent from the city of Orange and a smaller portion from Blayney Mill selection. The low-grade ore posed a dilemma for Cadia. To achieve a satisfactory economic operation, large-scale processing was required. The selection of the mills, equal to the largest designed and operated at the time, gave a plant configuration consisting of two 11.1- x 5.8-m (36- x 19-ft) SAG mills and three 6.1- x 9.1-m (20 x 30-ft) ball mills. This configuration did not provide the most satisfactory economic model for the project. A review of the single line configuration indicated that a significant reduction in the overall capital cost of the plant could be achieved by increasing the size of the mills and reducing the quantity. The process of grinding mill quality assurance brings with it associated truths and myths. When the mill quality assurance process took its first great steps forward in the late 1970s and early 1980s, they were in response to the conditions existing, in our industry, at those times. In the late 1990s, we are faced with different conditions, and problems, and need fresh solutions. Yet the system developed for the early 1980s has produced no new approaches for the late 1990s, becoming instead more hardened and entrenched. This lack of development and actual resistance to research is now costing the industry significant amounts of money in late start-ups and useless scrap loss.

Earl C. Herkenhoff Publication of the article "The Flotation Behavior of Digested Asphalt Ridge Tar Sands" by R.J. Smith and J.D. Miller has confirmed and again spotlighted a most significant and important development in the field of tar sand and heavy oil mining. This is the ability to recover 95 % of the bitumen in dry tar sands by a hot water process. The initial investigation by Miller and Sepulveda in early 1978, "Separation of Bitumen from Dry Tar Sands," was the first blockbuter. It is disappointing that there has been so little scientific and industry ackowledgement that the authors laid to rest the long entrenched belief that the sand grains had to be "water wetted" for a hot water process to be applicable. Dr. Miller and his researchers at the University of Utah used slightly different mineral dressing terminology in describing their process but it is essentially the old, established technique of high solids attrition scrubbing at elevated temperatures with a conditioner or modifier, followed by dilution and froth flotation. Similar techniques were described in detail for other nonmetallic minerals in the mid-1940s by Stuart Falconer of American Cyanamid Co. The authors used a 15-minute "scrub" period (or in their terminology "digester step") at 73% solids and 95°C (203°F) in a 0.3 m solution of sodium carbonate -about 4 kg/t (8 lb per st) of tar sand. Flotation was at 10% solids. Obviously, the scrub is an expensive step with respect to energy input but the high recovery of bitumen appears to justify it. Two basic questions then arise: • What are the effects of shorter scrubbing time, lower temperature, and less sodium carbonate? • Would a two-stage approach be advantageous? That is, could you get the major proportion of the bitumen with a mild scrub and apply the high power and temperature only to the refractory portion? These variables should be evaluated. Apparently, all results were only for rougher flotation. What would the grade and recovery of bitumen be if multiple cleaner flotation steps were employed? We must concede that a 60-62% grade of bitumen leaves considerable room for upgrading. Finally, it should be noted by all executives who approve funds for heavy oil recovery schemes, most of which are variations of in-situ methods, that mining can yield a 95% recovery of bitumen. That is correct, 95%. Imagine what that does to the total barrels recovered from a heavy oil resource compared with the scrawny 30-35% maximum recovery we are getting now. Miller We, too, share Mr. Herkenhoff s enthusiasm for the mining of tar sands-heavy oil and continue the development of related processing technology. Specifically, it will be noted that by appropriate control of bitumen viscosity in the feed (probably the most important variable for successful separation) the recovery can be accomplished at low digestion temperature and low addition of alkali. A 91 t/d (100 stpd) pilot plant based on our technology is now being operated by Enercor in Salt Lake City (Hatfield, Oblad, and Miller, 1982). In these same pilot facilities, rougher concentrates containing more than 80% bitumen on a dry basis are being produced from Asphalt Ridge Feed. However, the processing of certain other tar sands results in incomplete digestion of bitumen/sand aggregates as discussed elsewhere (Miller and Misra, 1982). Such undigested aggregates are shown in Fig. 1. In this regard, it is intended that a recycle stream will be installed in the pilot plant to provide for redigestion of middling products. A reliable and stable ventilation system is essential to the safe operation of underground mines. The stability of a mine ventilation system becomes extremely critical while responding to a fire incident since an unstable ventilation system will pose a risk of airflow reversal. The reversed airflow could bring the fire contaminants such as toxic gases and smoke unexpectedly to working areas. In the past few years, there has been a growing interest in the study of ventilation network stability using the concept of resistance sensitivity, which is described as an indicator of how the airflow in an airway is reacting to a resistance change of other airways. Several methods of calculating the resistance sensitivity in a mine ventilation network have been carried out by researchers and scholars around the world. However, the proposed methods heavily rely on a vast amount of mine ventilation simulations, which are very time consuming and computer-power intensive, especially for a large-scale mine ventilation network. In this paper, a derivative method calculating the resistance sensitivities with a single mine ventilation simulation has been developed and implemented into a mine fire simulation software, MFIRE. The results from the derivative method were verified against the results from a traditional method. The derivative method has been proven to be reliable and accurate.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the selective electrowinning of Ag and Au from cyanide solutions contaminated with Cu with the goal of decreasing the amount of Cu co-deposited. Decreasing Cu co-deposited will reduce refinery costs. Direct current was applied to the cell in pulsed and square wave voltages at 0.7 A?h per 150 mL of solution. Times tested for each cycle ranged from 1 to 10,000 ms. Graphite, lead, and stainless steel were evaluated as electrode materials. Square wave e1ectrowinning at 70? C gave the best separation of Ag and Au from Cu. Applying 2.5 V during the duty cycle, 0.0 V the rest of the period, a duty cycle of 10 to 30 pct, and a period of 100 ms to 1,000 ms gave the following results: Ag concentrations decreased from 34 µ g/mL to 0.1 µ g/mL, Au concentrations decreased from 54 µ g/mL to 0.2 µ g/mL, and Cu concentrations remained almost constant at 560 µ g/mL.

"Cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and galvanodynamic and chronopotentiometric techniques were used to characterize the effects of DXG-F7®, a commercial smoothing agent, on copper electrodeposition onto 316L stainless steel from a synthetic electrolyte containing 40 g/L copper (Cu2+), 160 g/L sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and 20 mg/L chloride (Cl-) at 40oC. The findings were compared against results using HydroStar® 4208, a modified polysaccharide. The nucleation overpotential and plating potential observed in cyclic voltammetry and galvanodynamic testing showed that neither DXG-F7 nor HydroStar significantly polarized acidic copper electrodeposition. Subtle differences between the additives were found during EIS testing and modeling, but more research will be needed to fully understand these differences. Surface-roughness measurements of two-hour deposits indicate that DXG-F7 and HydroStar produced smoother deposits as their concentrations in the electrolyte increased. No difference in the surface roughness of deposits was detected between the additives. Based on the experimental evidence resulting from the laboratory testing, no significant difference was found between DXG-F7 and HydroStar at 20 mg/L Cl- concentration, with the exception that DXG-F7 dissolves more easily in water than HydroStar. Introduction Cathode deposits obtained from acidified copper sulfate electrolyte(s) without organic additives are often soft, coarsely crystalline and nodular (Sun and O’Keefe, 1992). Therefore, small amounts of organic additives are added to the electrolyte to produce level and dense cathodes during copper electrowinning. The action of organic additives is thought to be due to their adsorption on the surfaces of the newly formed copper grains. Hence, any copper grain that grows excessively fast adsorbs a layer of organic additive, which inhibits growth. The result is a smoother and harder deposit of suitable purity (Sun and O’Keefe, 1992). In part I of our four-part series on the examining of copper electrowinning smoothing agents, a review of previously published work on organic additives used during copper electrowinning was presented (Moats, Luyima and Cui, 2016). In the review, it was noted that many tankhouses had switched from guar to other saccharide-based products such as HydroStar and DXG-F7."

The selection of belt conveyor drive systems (*) is the subject of ongoing investigation. Frequently this choice has been governed by an incomplete perspective on the major considerations. A more comprehensive and objective approach is desirable. This paper presents additional factors which hopefully will broaden this perspective. BACKGROUND Conventional belt conveyors are powered by electric or electro-mechanical drives(*) mounted at the conveyor's head, tail, intermediate return span, or a combination of these (Fig. 1). A list of the drives reviewed is given in Table I. The following are main elements influencing the selection of the drive system: 1) dynamic characteristics, 2) economic factors such as capital cost, plant spares compatibility, reliability, availability, maintainability, and 3) environmental constraints. The principal dynamic characteristics of concern are the reactions of belt forces generated by the drive system during starting of the conveyor. Another attribute for consideration is the application of multiple driven pulleys used to 1) lower the conveyor's belt tension requirements, 2) increase the expected tonnage throughput, allowing for possible drive component failures, and 3) increase the plant spares flexibility related to the drive assembly.

Engineers at the Freeman United Coal Min¬ing Company, located in West Frankfort, Illinois, have been using a computerized production planning and maintenance reporting system, which have been designed exclusively for underground coal mining. This paper will explain a dynamic graphical simulation and computerized time study system that has been used to design and evaluate underground production systems for optimizing productivity. Also with the aid of customized software, detailed records on changeable components of underground equipment, including the vendor's name, date installed, operating and maintenance hours, etc., have helped Management to select the best available components for their equipment. The MPASS System, Mine Performance Analysis Simulation System, developed through a cooperative agreement with Freeman United, Ketron Inc., and the U. S. Department of Energy utilizes new methods to analyze and design production systems in underground coal mines. Fluid flow phenomena and therefore the flotation efficiency of air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) flotation are strongly dependent on the operating and design variables such as air flow rate, slurry flow rate, underflow and overflow opening areas, percent solids in the feed, reagent levels, particle size, ASH length, etc. Time-averaged multiphase flow characteristics, as deter-mined by x-ray CT and described in a previous publication, are used to understand and explain the steady-state ASH flotation of quartz. A detailed parametric study of quartz flotation by a nominal 2-inch diameter air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH-2C) revealed the influence of these variables on the flotation response which is discussed in terms of the multiphase flow characteristics. Thus, a phenomenological description of quartz flotation has been established to assist in the further development and utilization of the ASH technology.

I am sure it is obvious to all of you that a complete program of casualty and property insurance is as necessary for any tunneling contractor as it is for anyone else involved in trade in the United States today. Going beyond those general undefined terms, there are many areas that need specific attention, particularly for contractors, regardless of size. WORKERS' COMPENSATION Workers' Compensation is mandatory in all states and the District of Columbia. In most of the states, private insurance provides this coverage. In a few states, the state operates Workers' Compensation funds, some of which are competitive with the private sector and others are operated on a monopolistic basis. Under a monopolistic setup, you have no choice, you must buy coverage from the state. Self insurance of the Workers' Compensation risk is also an alternative in most jurisdictions. With a contractor operating only in the U.S., the coverage extensions are few in number. If your work brings you anywhere near navigable waterways or land extensions thereof, you should have both U. S. Longshoreman and Harborworkers' coverage, as well as Employer's Liability coverage for the master or members of the crew of a vessel.

Crosstown Interceptor Phase IA is the first deep tunnel element of the Milwaukee Inline Project. The tunnel contract includes 6,492 meters (m) of 9.1-m-diameter tunnel, two access shafts, and partial lining for structural purposes. The work also includes grouting to be performed as directed by the engineer to provide groundwater infiltration control in lined and unlined reaches of the tunnel. This paper summarizes infiltration observations, progress of the grouting work, and its potential application to the remainder of the Milwaukee project.

The war in Vietnam stretched into another decade, an American President was at the brink of impeachment, the earth was given its own day, twin tower monuments of American ingenuity were completed in New York and would stand high above the Manhattan skyline for 31 years. Inflation, oil shortages, low commodity prices and America’s 200th birthday were part of the decade — it was the 1970s. For the mining industry, the demands of the decade would be high and the challenges would be significant. Because of the many challenges that lined up in front of it, the mining industry was forced to work smarter and more efficiently. The industry also expanded its borders in search of new resources and struggled along with the rest of the world through a fuel crisis, inflation and a recession.
