An area in Southwestern Wyoming is rapidly becoming the soda ash capitol of the world. Starting only 20 years ago from a unique deposit of trona, the out-put has rapidly increased until now about half of the soda ash produced in the United States comes from this area. Chemically, soda ash is sodium carbonate, a large tonnage, widely used alkali. The largest single industrial use is in glass manufacture, where 25 tons of soda ash are used in producing 100 tons of glass. Other big users are the detergent and chemical industries. The trona deposits in the Green River basin of Wyoming, were formed about 75 million years ago as part of a geologic period when an ancient lake alternately went through periods of being a large fresh water or smaller brine lake. Today these deposits lie from 800 to 3000 feet below the surface in a semi-arid, almost desert region just west of the Rocky Mountain Continental Divide at an elevation of 6200 feet. In this area there is a prevailing westerly breeze and almost every afternoon the velocity reaches very windy conditions. Rainfall is minimal, being only 6-8 inches of moisture per year with an evaporation rate exceeding 24-inches. Most of the moisture comes in winter snows or summer thunderstorms. Temperatures are low with below zero weather dur¬ing most of the winter and early morning frost is not uncommon during the summer months. There are many trona beds varying in thickness from a few inches up to 15 feet. The deposits now being mined vary from 8 to 10 feet in thickness. The ore is mined by driving tunnels either via conventional explosives or with continuous boring machines. It is transported to the shafts via conveyor belts

Conventional clean coal technologies which consist of coarse coal cleaning by gravity methods and treatment of natural fines by flotation can only remove a portion of the pyritic sulfur and ash in the coal. Higher (+90%) pyritic sulfur rejection is attainable when coals are ground to ultrafine sizes to enhance liberation of the mineral matter and then cleaned. However, cleaning of coal at very fine sizes poses a number of unsolved problems, the chief one being the loss of cleaning efficiency. This, of course, means that liberation of pyrites does not always equal its rejection. In addition, the dewatering of fine- cleaned coal, and its handling, transportation, and acceptability to the utility industry a1 so pose considerable technical and economic problems, especially when compared to the FGD alternative. This study level process design represents an economically viable method for extracting thorium dioxide and other rare earth elements from monazite ore. This paper incorporates results from the 2019 capstone project from the honors Design Internship in Green Engineering in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. In this activity, senior students in Chemical Engineering at the University of Tennessee (UT) focused on the development and study of a process for the recovery of thorium dioxide and P2O5 from monazite. While not mandated, the process offers rare earth oxides as attractive byproducts. The project focused on recovery of byproducts rather than the creation or addition to waste streams. Additionally, (1) the process economics relied heavily on recovery of rare earth byproducts, (2) thoriumhandling portions of the process could be effectively segregated from rare earth and phosphate handling portions of the process, and (3) thorium and uranium content of waste streams should be carefully managed and eliminated where possible.

Traditionally, cost effective gains in the capacity of material handling systems were a result of increases in equipment size. In general, the use of maximum capacity components in a system optimizes the production "costs per ton." The trend-"Bigger is Better" will continue in material handling equipment. Since it is rare for plant operators to lament an over abundance of screening capacity, one can safely predict that vibrating screens will follow this trend. Large Vibrating Screens - The Challenge Large vibrating screens represent a unique challenge for Manufacturers, Plant Designers, and Plant Operators. The inherent mode of operation for vibrating screens is self-destructive. More often than Manufacturers admit, Designers plan for, or Operators staff for, a vibrating screen succeeds and self-destructs. This is a problem. It can magnify with larger vibrating screens.

The McLaughlin Mill started operating in January, 1985. For the first eighteen (18) months start-up, initial operation, and circuit debottlenecking have been done. The mill was designed to recover gold from a refractory ore requiring acid autoclaving pretreatment. This paper discusses the problem associated with bringing this complex hydro-metallurgical plant to consistently achieve design tonnages. Also, briefly described are the mill flowsheet, training program, permitting, and process and project development.

Froth flotation has been shown to be an effective method for reducing Loss-on-Ignition (LOI) of ponded or landfilled fly ash. Reduction of LOI is required for many fly ashes, particularly those produced from low-No, burners, in order to meet ASTM requirements for use as a mineral admixture in Portland cement concrete. An additional ASTM requirement, fineness, is critical in determining end use applicability, and in many cases, classification of fly ash is necessary to produce an acceptable product. Hydraulic classification has been shown to be a simple, cost-effective method for classification of a variety of minerals including silica, phosphate, mica, coal, etc. and has shown to be similarly effective on fly ash. The combination of froth flotation and hydraulic classification facilitate the production of a high quality pozzolan that meets or exceeds ASTM specifications. This combination has been rigorously evaluated and results of pilot-scale testing are presented. Pilot scale testing was conducted on fly ash from two active utility storage ponds and demonstrated that high quality, consistent pozzolan could be produced using APT's Fast Float? Technology. Along with the pozzolan, additional production of aggregate for masonry mortar and a low sulfur, medium Btu fuel were also demonstrated. The Fast Float? process incorporates several simple unit processes to ensure pozzolan consistency; classification controls particle size distribution which is critical to achieving early strength, flotation controls the grade with respect to L.O.I. (Loss on Ignition) while dewatering controls the moisture content.

Electric drives hire done outstanding job in many-fields that are related to the mining industry. The equipment that is offered for electric-trucks was developed from the traction equipment which is used on the diesel electric locomotive. Rotating equipment available for use on electric trucks is identical in principle to that which is used on these locomotives. In as far as it is practical, similar controls are used. Another descendent of the diesel electric locomotive can be found in the oil well drilling industry, Here, locomotive traction motors and. electric controls have been modified to fit the particular requirements of the drilling industry, One 2400 H.P. diesel electric drilling rig drilled a 24,000 Ft. well in West Texas with an electrical maintenance cost in the order of 7¢ per hour This was a new rig and the costs are less than the average maintenance costs will be for the life of the equipment, Even soy since it took one (1) year to drill this well, this 7¢ per hour has real significance. Electric shovels use a similar type of electrical equipment; they too have shown real savings over the equipment they replaced. Since electric drives have done so well, in other fields, they warrant consideration for use in high horsepower, large capacity trucks.

In the green backfilling mining of underground coal mines, gangue in a coal seam is used to replace and fill goafs. However, the gas drainage time changes in the amount of gangue output and order in the extraction sequence of stope blocks, thereby changing the production output. A multi-objective integer programming model was proposed to solve this based on an improved non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm. The results show a feasible gangue filling rate can be found and the extraction sequence for a long-term planning time is optimized. It increases the planned annual output by 26% and reduces equipment idle time.

Large deposits of eudialyte, a low grade zirconium bearing mineral, occur on the Southern Coast of Greenland in the Ilimaussaq intrusion. Various processes were tested in the laboratory to recover eudialyte from these ores, including flotation, leaching, gravity and magnetic separation. A combination of dry and wet magnetic separations has the advantage of simplicity and the least environmental impact for the location. This paper summarizes the results of laboratory testwork to develop a two-stage treatment process to recover the eudialyte by magnetic separation.

"Current Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) risk models and asbestos fiber counting techniques for monitoring airborne exposures treat all fibers as being equivalent and ignore the effect of dimension on toxicity. While this may have been appropriate when modern analytical methods were not available, the measurement world is now fully capable of making the appropriate distinctions. The importance of width as a determinant of carcinogenicity has been recognized for nearly 30 years within the published literature. Stanton,1 in a landmark study of a suite of fibrous materials, found that durable mineral fibers with widths less than 0.25 mm and lengths longer than 8 mm were causally associated with the induction of tumors. Pott,2 in a later study, postulated a fiber toxicity model that agreed reasonably well with the Stanton findings, but extended the concept to include varying toxicity as a function of length and width. Wylie et al.3 reanalyzed samples used by Davis et al.4 and found that tumor generation was strongly and inversely correlated with fiber width. Crump5 testified increasing fiber length was correlated with disease occurrence. Lippman6 reviewed a number of studies and suggested that mesothelioma was closely associated with long, thin fibers. Berman et al.7 published a risk model, which found that disease was correlated almost exclusively with fibers longer than 40 mm and width less than 0.25 mm. Recently, Loomis et al.8 reanalyzed textile mill samples and found that aspect ratios greater than 40:1 were highly correlated with disease. Incorporation of width into risk models has been limited by the availability of data from operating asbestos plants and, in particular, the observation of an asbestos plant for which there is no observable mesothelioma. There have been only limited studies published on the dimensions of asbestos fibers, with a few serving as the primary references in other literature.9_13 A rare opportunity to collect detailed concentration and dimensional data of airborne crocidolite from an operating asbestos-cement plant using modern analytical procedures arose, providing a chance to supplement the existing literature on airborne fiber dimensions. The asbestos-cement plant is located in the eastern end of Cochabamba, Bolivia along Highway 4. Cochabamba is a relatively large city located in the Andes Mountains, approximately 250 km southeast of the capital La Paz. The city sits in a valley that runs east-west with mountains to the north and south. The crocidolite used in the products made at this facility is mined in central Bolivia, approximately 75 km northwest of Santa Cruz. The crocidolite is a fibrous magnesioriebeckite 14 (blue asbestos). Crocidolite fibers from Bolivia were the subject of prior reports suggesting the fibers are generally longer and thicker than crocidolite from Australia or South Africa.9 At the cement plant, the run-of-mine crocidolite was first pulverized using a hammer mill and then sieved on vibratory sieves to produce fibers of limited size ranges for use in the cement. The sieved crocidolite is mixed with other components, including recycled cement product, to produce a slurry that is vacuum filtered into sheet form. The sheets are then manually molded into a corrugated shape, air dried, and sawed (using circular saws) to accepted dimensions. The sawed sheets are cured in soaking pits for 28 days before being shipped to the consumer. Prior to shipping, the sheets are finished by a light hand sanding followed (at customer request) by applying one or more coats of paint. The emerging problem of electronic waste has promoted the interest in exploring metal recovery from secondary sources under the umbrella of urban mining. This study presents the physical and chemical characterization of various components present in end-of-life laptops to help ascertain the sites of metallic values and develop sustainable and environment-friendly recycling. The recycling potential of a laptop is evaluated by sequential disassembly, separation, and characterization of components such as body (49.8 wt.%), printed circuit board (9.7 wt.%), hard disk drive (4.9 wt.%), and battery (12.4 wt.%). The printed circuit boards comprise metallic values, majorly copper (25 wt.%), tin (5.8 wt.%), and lead (3.1 wt.%). The precious metals (Au, Ag) with an economic advantage are abundantly present in electronic components such as integrated circuits, capacitors, resistors, and processors. Critical elements such as lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements are detected in the discarded laptops' batteries and hard disk drives. The recycling potential representing the amount of material that can be recycled in various components, depending on the type, concentration, and purity, is determined in the range of 36–100%. On average, a unit laptop contains~ 386 g of Cu (14.45 wt. %), 49.73 g Co (1.86 wt. %), ~346 mg Ag, ~141.2 mg Au, ~650 mg of rare earth elements (Nd, Dy). This study presents a database for investigating integrated and economical recycling techniques from different components of a laptop, and an overall process flow is also proposed.

A resource of low grade good quality diamonds has been discovered through the Diamond Company NL-Moonstone Diamond Corp. Joint Venture. A limited bulk sample diamond test of two large kimberlite pipes on the Kelsey Lake Property, Colorado, has been completed. These kimberlite pipes have petrological and mineralogical indications of the presence of diamond. Small diamonds were recovered from surface samples. Drilling and trenching revealed both pipes were complexes of diatreme facies kimberlite. One pipe contains crater facies kimberlite as well. This is the first reported occurrence of crater facies kimberlite in the Province. Approximately 1000 tonnes of kimberlite rock was excavated and processed through a scrubber -HMS -Sortex -Grease Plant. Significant diamonds were recovered. The diamonds were generally of good color and clarity, with many being in the gem and near gem categories. Grades are considered low however. Additionally, a small potential resource of alluvial diamonds is present.

"Presplitting is a form of blasting that when executed properly will create a smooth wall that will minimize secondary conditioning. In recent years, presplitting has become a popular technique to be used in both the mining and construction industry, however, presplitting fails on many occasions because of ‘geologic conditions’. This is typically because of improper explosive loads consisting of overloading and underloading blastholes. In this paper the authors introduce new factors such as a presplit factor which varies for different rock types, selection criteria for the spacing of presplits, the optimization of explosive load, as well as prediction methods for the environmental affects for the technique of Precision Presplitting. BACKGROUND Methods of controlled blasting in which a smooth, stable wall could be blasted have been an important consideration since blasting in mining and construction has begun. How can one use an explosive, with its massive energy and power, to break a non-homogenous rock without causing backbreak, poor walls, or deviations in the wall over large distances? The blasting industry has known for a long time that blasting ‘high benches’ would result in better walls and less backbreak. However, this was not a sufficiently controlled technique for critical projects, such as the Niagara Power Plant. This was one of the main challenges Hercules Powder faced when they began the project. In order to achieve this, they used a new tool in the explosive engineer’s toolkit, presplitting. The presplitting done on the Niagara Power Project utilized 1 ½” x 8” (38mm x 203mm) 40% gelatin dynamite in 2 ½” (63.5) diameter boreholes. This was done on multiple levels with benches between 12 feet to 52 feet (3.6m to 15.8m) with a total powder factor of 0.75 pounds/cubic yard (0.45 kg/m3). The spacing on these holes ranged between 18 inches to 24 inches (0.46m to 0.61m), center to center (Langfors & Kihlstrom, 1973). The strange aspect of this project was that this “lightly loaded” closely spaced row was fired before the production blast, yet this project produced some of the best walls seen at that time directly from blasting. In today’s blasting industry, presplitting is a more common way to produce smooth, stable high-walls for both the construction and the mining industry. Today, explosive loads for traditional presplitting is generally measured in pounds per foot (kilograms per meter) and typically ranges from 0.30 lb. /ft. to 0.5 lb. /ft. (0.45 kg/m to 0.75 kg/m). MECHANICS OF PRESPLITTING When analyzing a blasting process like the Niagara Project, many wonder how did that work when normally confining a charge would cause cratering and increased backbreak. Since then, presplitting mechanics have been studied extensively. It has been shown in many models that presplitting is not achieve through the collision of shockwave, but by gas pressure in the boreholes. In addition to models and finite element simulations, this has been proven full scale using Pyrodex, a propellant, to create a presplit plane with no shock wave present (Konya, Dean Barrett, & Smith Jr, Presplitting Granite Using Pyrodex, A Propellant, 1986)."

The validity of the concept of mine resistance in ventilation systems is examined. Mine resistance is the proportionality constant relating the head generated by a fan and the quantity flowing through it when the fan is connected to a mine circuit. It is the total effect of all branches in the mine ventilation circuit. Its importance lies in the fact that for new mine projections, and in the extensions of existing mines, ventilation calculations are usually based upon adjustments of the mine resistance. In ventilation circuits with regulation, and/or with multi-fans, simple adjustments of the mine resistance curve do not lead to correct solutions. A ventilation system consists of several interconnected subsystems where one subsystem behavior affects that of the others, and the total system. Through a series of simple but realistic examples, the authors will demonstrate the importance of the systems concept in mine ventilation, and its practical application to coal mine ventilation planning.

Machine manufacturers’ recommendations on maintenance strategies of capital-intensive draglines are not always based on real data and therefore lead to losses from downtime. This paper proposes a preventive maintenance strategy for a dragline deployed in an opencast coal mine based on reliability-centered maintenance and failure-mode-effects analysis using real operational data. Reliability-centered maintenance replaced a cluster of critical failure components of the dragline while satisfying two specific conditions: (i) the components should be replaced at the earliest mean time to failure (MTTF) within the group and (ii) the time taken to replace all the parts should be equivalent to the maximum downtime within the group. Estimated threshold weightage factor identified twenty-six critical failure components for the preventive maintenance strategy, and clustering of components divided them into nine groups. In a group, the loss that is expected to occur by replacing some of the components before their failure, and the gain by reducing the overall maintenance downtime, has been explained through a cost-benefit analysis. The total net profit generated is calculated as US$200,178. This clustering activity also led to a reduction of annual downtime by 231 h, whose approximate market price as equivalent coal production costs $295,365.

Dust generation and its dispersion in a longwall mine pose significant health and safety issues. The concern is prominent at both the working face, where coal excavation exposes workers to high dust concentrations, and also in the return, where float dust accumulates. To address this issue, researchers at theUniversity of Kentucky designed and fabricated a flooded-bed dust scrubber integrated into a full-scale physical model of a longwall shearer. This mock-up was installed in the longwall test gallery at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). A full-factorial experiment was designed to measure the effectiveness of the scrubber on dust capture. Test results indicated dust reduction of up to 57% in the return airways. This paper presents the development of a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model and its validation by comparing the simulation results against the experimental results. The CFD simulations show good agreement with experimental results with differences between + 6.9 and − 9.7%. The validated CFD model was used further to predict the scrubber performance under additional operating conditions, resulting in a dust reduction of up to 66.5%. With this level of success, the scrubber concept can be a game changer for the mining industry, and it can be utilized to improve health and safety in longwall mines.

This paper is primarily a report on the process of using oolitic aragonite, as received from Marconi& Ocean Industries, Ltd. without further processing, for a major portion of the raw feed to a rotary kiln producing cement clinker. Oolitic aragonite is a high purity calcium carbonate material, dust free, with the appearance of a course, white sand. It is farmed when under the right conditions of temperature ocean currents, and ocean floor topography. The calcium carbonate will precipitate into small spherical particles on the ocean floor. These oceanic conditions are correct to cause precipitation of the calcium carbonate near Ocean Cay in the Bahama Island chain. The present growing deposit near Ocean Cay is in the billions of tons and is mined by a relatively shallow-operation hydraulic dredge. The aragonite thus formed is en orthorhombic crystaline form of calcium carbonate with a specific gravity of approximately 2.9. At a temperature of 505°C. (940F), the aragonite converts to the hexagonal crystal of calcite with a specific gravity of 2.6 to 2.7. This change in specific gravity weakens the structure of the particles but the individual pieces are still fairly hard. When the material is then calcined at 900°C (1650°F), the particles retain their shape but become soft and will break up under finger pressure.

The integrity of unconventional shale gas well casings positioned in the abutment pillar of a longwall mine could be jeopardized by longwall-induced deformations. Under such scenarios, the surrounding fracture networks could provide pathways for gas flow into the mine creating safety concerns. To provide recommendations for developing guidelines that ensure a safe co-existence of longwall mining and unconventional shale gas production, this study evaluates the impact of parameters that could affect potential shale gas flow into the mine in the event of a casing breach using a discrete fracture network (DFN) model. These parameters are evaluated using a conceptualized DFN realization that is representative of the fractured zone in the overburden, and the range of parameter variations is within values validated with field measurements. The results show that a decrease in fracture aperture (potentially due to longwall-induced stress in the likely vicinity of the breach location) reduces the potential gas flow to the mine by a significantly higher proportion. A 50% decrease in the aperture of the fracture that directly transports the gas from the casing breach location reduces the gas flow to the mine by over 70%. Similarly, changes in the fracture water saturation level significantly affect the gas flow. In all cases, the potential gas flow to the mine is higher if the casing breach occurs at an increased gas well pressure. These findings provide critical information regarding the impact of each of the parameters associated with gas flow in the event of a shale gas casing breach near a longwall mine and could help towards the development of guidelines to ensure a safe coexistence of both industries.

Mechanisms involved in the depression of the sulfides: pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite with potassium permanganate have been investigated. Flotation tests were conducted using potassium amyl xanthate, Z-6, and pine oil in the absence and presence of potassium permanganate at around pH = 6. 5 naturally yielded by the sulfides in the pulp. On the basis of crystal chemistry considerations, the amount of xanthate adsorbed by the sulfides depends on the amount of sulfur and metal ions present on the surface; thus, the avidity of the sulfides for xanthate should increase in the order: sphalerite C chalcopyrite 4 galena 4 pyrite, and the ease of depression response to the permanganate action should be in the same order. Depression of the sulfides in the system occurs primarily due to the removal of the collector ions by the permanganate ions to form manganese dioxide and dixanthogen according to the reaction: 3 M(RX)2 + 2 Mn04 + 4 H20 2 ? MnO2 + 3(RX-XR) + 3 M+2 8OH where M represents the metal ion, RX the xanthate ion and (RX-XR) the dixanthogen molecule. Results seem to indicate that the permanganate ions play a triple role in the system: (1) they convert xanthate ions into dixanthogen, (2) they further oxidize the mineral surface and (3) if present in excess, they may oxidize the xanthate beyond the dixanthogen stage with the formation of CO2, H20 and SO4. All sulfides, except for chalcopyrite, showed a depression response in the order predicted regardless of the order of addition of xanthate and permanganate reagents. Chalcopyrite did not depress as easily; this behavior may be due to the avidity of the colloidal MnO2 to adsorb Cu+2 ions on its surface, this would destabilize the colloid making it coalesce with the formation of a layer of precipitated MnO2 on the surface of the mineral. The presence of this layer would prevent further action of the permanganate ions on chalcopyrite.

It is more than ten years since the first fully automated process using a computer started operation. Computer control has become common in a number of process industries, yet in spite of the tremendous incentives which ere present, there are only a few computer installations in the mining industry and none of these has announced successful control of a process. Recognizing that one of the reasons for this slow progress is the lack of adequate mathematical models of the various processes involved, the author's company started a project in the summer of 1966 to develop such models. It was early recognized that the existence of a major disturbance input, in the form of the mineral composition of the feed prevents most flotation plants from attaining a steady state condition. This makes the custom¬ary method of developing correlations from steady state plant data inapplicable and requires a more fundamental approach.
