Ore reserves are often less than 30% of geologic resource estimates that are initially prepared by exploration geologists. Differences of this magnitude between resources and reserves can lead to serious . problems in the early valuation of properties when the geologic resource estimates are interpreted to represent ore reserves and are later found to be misleading and gross overstatements of ore reserves. The geologist can avoid such difficulties by considering the implications of mining, metallurgical recovery, and economics early in the project and by using appropriate qualifiers in the resource statement Examples using typical deposit characteristics are used to demonstrate how cutoff grade, stripping ratio, dilution, mining extraction and metallurgical recovery affect ore reserve estimations.

The Red Dog Operation is located in northwestern Alaska at Latitude 68°, 100 miles north of the Arctic Circle and 50 miles inland from the Chukchi Sea. The orebody was acquired by the NANA Regional Corporation, (an Alaska Native Corporation established by the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971), in 1980 in their land selection. In 1982 Cominco American and the NANA Corporation signed a development agreement and Cominco Alaska Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Cominco American, was formed to manage the Red Dog Project. An extensive exploration program in 1980 -1982 outlined a mineral inventory of 85 million tons, at a grade of 5.2% Pb, 17.1 % Zn, and 2.4 oz/ton Ag, which makes the Red Dog the second largest deposit ever discovered. Broken Hill, in Australia, is the only zinc orebody which was originally larger than Red Dog. The design of the facilities is to process 2.1 million tons of ore annually, which will produce 560,000 tons of zinc concentrate, 100,000 tons of lead concentrate and 50,000 tons of bulk lead/zinc concentrate.

"The purpose of this study is to explore how the geochemical and petrographic components of coal may impact its physical properties, as well as how these components correlate with a history of reportable dynamic failure in coal mines. Dynamic failure events, also termed bumps, bounces, or bursts, are the explosive failures of rock in a mining environment. These events occur suddenly and often with no warning, resulting in worker injury up to and including fatality in greater than 60% of MSHA reportable cases. A database of variables was compiled using publicly available datasets, which included compositional geographic, strength, and Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) data (ACARP, 1998). Results indicate that bumping coals are less mature, lower in carbon, higher in oxygen, softer, and less well cleated than coals that do not bump. High liptinite content was found to correlate with higher average UCS values. However, no clear, direct correlation between UCS and dynamic failure status was observed. The findings of this study establish that differences exist between coals that have experienced reportable dynamic failure accidents versus those that have not. These differences are inherent to the coal itself, independent of mining-induced risk factors. Results further illuminate how compositional attributes of coal influence physical properties and begin to clarify potential links between geochemistry and dynamic failure status. Only through the better understanding of risk can more effective mitigating strategies be enacted.INTRODUCTIONDynamic failure events, also termed bumps, bounces, or bursts, are the sudden failures of rock in a mining or quarrying environment. Failure occurs when the rock’s critical bearing capacity has been exceeded and the rock fails energetically through the outward expulsion of rubblized material (Peng, 2008). These events occur suddenly and often with no warning, resulting in worker injury up to and including fatality in greater than 60% of reported cases through the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Much research has been devoted to the prevention of these events. The effects of overburden depth and stiffness, mine design, mining practices, and in situ stresses are well documented (Agapito and Goodrich, 2000; Brauner, 1994; Campoli and Kertis, 1987; Holland and Thomas, 1954; Iannacchione and Zelanko, 1995; Lawson et al., 2016b; Mark, 2016; Newman, 2002; Peng, 2008; Whyatt, 2008). Despite these significant advancements in coal mine ground control, however, events continue to occur. Proactive risk mitigation remains an important research area. Mining geometrical graphic documentation is employed on a large scale in designing and planning of mining operations at all the stages of exploitation. Mining geometrical modelling of mineral grade distribution presents an independent type of mathematical (graphic) modelling. The idea of functional relationship between geological indices being observed, and spicier coordinates is the basis of traditional mining geometrical modelling. Graphic presentation of three independent variables P =f (x,y,z) is confined to obtaining the series of two independent variables functions. Independent variables are presented as topographic surfaces corresponding to plane cross-sections of a deposit. During exploitation of certain parts of a deposit the most reliable geological information is obtained, characterizing regularities of ore distribution in the entrails. This information is, though, not taken into account in goemetrization of the new areas. In this connection dynamic modelling of deposits in the process of exploitation is necessary, i.e. geometrization of the deposits should be dynamic.

Dense medium processes are used to clean over 50% of the coal that is fed into preparation plant facilities worldwide. The dense medium is formed using ultrafine magnetite which is recovered after the cleaning step using drain-and-rinse screens and magnetic separators. Despite the high efficiency of the recovery system, magnetite losses of around 0.5 to 1.0 kg/ton are common. Considering the recent escalation of magnetite to around $300/ton, an alternative source of magnetic material from coal combustion bottom ash has been investigated. A relatively low cost recovery system has been developed. Dense-medium tests using the bottom ash magnetics revealed a high level of efficiency as indicated by probable error values around 0.03 over the range of medium densities investigated. The results from both the recovery and coal cleaning efforts will be discussed in detail.

This study reports preliminary feasibility investigations for utilization of the selective carbothermic reduction and smelting (SCRS) processing scheme to beneficiate low-grade iron-manganese (Fe-Mn) mineral deposits from MN, USA. The study includes laboratory-scale demonstrations using an induction furnace and production of various products by manipulation of operational parameters. The products include alternative iron (Alt Fe), high carbon ferromanganese (HC FeMn), alternative silicomanganese (Alt SiMn), and upgraded manganese concentrate (Mn conc). All of these products have commercial value and can be used in various applications as raw materials.

This paper will describe briefly the steps taken in the development of a Central Florida phosphate ore deposit from acquisition to mining. Further, the design and early operation of the mining and beneficiation facilities will be depicted. During the 1950's, with confidence in the continually increasing requirement for phosphate fertilizer materials essential for producing food, I'. R. Grace & Cc acquired the Hookers Prairie tract containing approximately 45 million metric tons o. (50 million short ton~ of potential phosphate rock product. In 1973, at a point when the Grace captive need for rock was being greatly enlarged by a planned doubling of its Bartow phosphate chemicals plant capacity, the decision was made to expand existing phosphate rock production by building a new mine and plant. The initial annual capacity was to be 2.3 million tons (2.5 million st); however, subsequent investigation pointed to a higher than estimated dragline operating factor 'and the forecast of annual capacity was set at 2.5 million tons (2.8 million st).

This paper describes the development of a life-of-mine schedule (LOM) for one of the world's largest known sedimentary copper-cobalt districts located in the Katanga Province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). A particular feature of the Tenke Fungurume LOM schedule is the considerable number of pits/phases for scheduling, each competing to provide the best ore available to a capacity-constrained process facility. This paper discusses the LOM scheduling objectives and constraints, data preprocessing steps such as ore binning, block aggregation and clustering analysis as a scheduling aid, the mine scheduling approach and results and conclusions. Construction of the Cerro Colorado on-off leach pad in northern Chile required placement of approximately 3,000,000m3 of fill over a P1an area of approximately 600,000m in irregular terrain with relief of up to 40m. Earthwork construction was completed in approximately six months using mine waste which was placed in 4 to 6m lifts using mine haul trucks. The lift thickness was reduced and the compactive effort increased in the upper 10m to enable development of a mat and additional resistance to possible differential settlements under dynamic (earthquake) conditions. A single 80 mil (2mm) HOPE liner was used below the leach pads and this was protected from the loading and unloading equipment using an engineered liner system consisting of screened sand, gravel and silt from local sources as the bedding and cover layers, and a heel of screened gravel and primary crushed low grade ore. Settlement monitoring, field testing and subsequent assessments of liner performance have indicated an adequate design was achieved and the project proceeded with considerable savings in time and construction costs.

The San Luis deposit of Costilla county, Colorado contained 11,021,000 tonnes (12,149,000 tons) of ore at 1.4 g/t (0.040 oz/st) gold in two minable zones. Gold mineralization is associated with silicification and quartz-sericite-pyrite alteration localized in breccias along a low-angle detachment fault zone in Precambrian gneiss. Gangue minerals include chlorite, specular hematite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite, and fluorite. Mineralization is mid-Tertiary in age and has a direct genetic relation to the emplacement of felsic intrusions. Portions of the ore body are unconformably overlain by sedimentary rocks of the Tertiary Santa Fe Formation. The deposit formed during the early stages of extensional tectonism along the eastern edge of the present day Rio Grande rift.

Fatigue in mining operations is a serious issue and a significant contributor to incidents and accidents. While mine operators are using or introducing new technology to monitor operator fatigue, there is little work that focuses on the subjective experience of fatigue and the use of fatigue monitoring technology. To investigate this issue, eight focus groups with a total of 44 operators of heavy haulage equipment working for two mining companies in the Mountain West of the USA participated in 1-h focus groups. The topic of the focus groups was the experience of operator fatigue and issues surrounding fatigue at the workplace. The results of the content analyses suggest that operators are well aware of the signs of fatigue, and that they understand the severity of these signs as well. In addition, they are aware of the effect of fatigue on driving performance and are using a wide range of methods to manage fatigue. Finally, based on participants’ assessment, current fatigue monitoring systems lack face validity and reliability and are perceived as not being effective. The results of this study emphasize the importance of a socio-technical systems perspective in the context of miner health and safety management. Only such a comprehensive perspective can result in improvements that are sustainable.

In spite of the deflationary state of the minerals business today, there will be opportunities for those who can fulfill future needs. Since there are abundant supplies of ores and fuels to keep prices down, at least in peacetime scenarios, future needs may be as much political and social as technical and economic. Engineers and economists will develop new and innovative ways to find, mine, process and pay for mineral deposits. Pressure from governments and non-governmental organizations and the public will combine with market forces to provide opportunities for highly competitive, risk-taking enterprises who can leverage the qualities of their orebodies and employees by being good neighbors and partners.

According to the Balandin's (1) "multiplet theory of catalysis", adsorption can occur only if atoms of the reactant molecules are congruent with surface atoms of the catalyst. Such a condition calls for certain definite geometrical relationships between the reactant molecules and the atoms at the surface of the catalyst. If such a match or geometrical 'fit' is not provided, the surface reaction will not take place. An appropriate analogy to this may be the lock and key theory that enzymes should fit a substrate just as a key fits a lock. Similar geometrical considerations in adsorption studies were made in connection with the flotation of minerals. Gaudin(2) and Gaudin and Preller (3) proposed that if the dimensions of collector ions are in registry with the mineral lattice, an ordered layer of adsorbed species is formed. They explained that the structural fit is one reason for good flotation of galena with xanthate. In another study, Bachmann (4) attributed the selective flotation of KC1 from NaCl with amine to the fact that the lattice parameter of the amine collector is closer to that of KC1. Schubert(5) investigated the flotation of various nonmetallic minerals with amine and pyridine, and related the dimensions of the collector ions with the anion distances of the mineral surface. He concluded that good flotation is obtained when the tolerance is within 20%. The geometrical theory has also been used by Groszek (6) to explain the preferential adsorption of n-paraffin onto the basal plane of graphite. The geometrical theory has thus been found useful in explaining adsorptive properties of an adsorbate relative to the substrate structure. The purpose of the present work is to examine the possibilities of a geometrical fit between sodium dodecyl sulfate and Cu(OH)2 surface, and to construct a crystallographic model of the surface compound.

Due to the unbalanced top coal drawing process, the recovery ratio is low, and the equipment stability is poor in the longwall top coal caving mining (LTCC) with an inclined seam. Aimed at these problems, this paper proposes the dynamic group caving method (DGCM). The basic procedure is that when the drawn volume of top coal from a support reaches about half, the next support begins drawing top coal, and the drawing process between the two supports is half done. Taking the panel no. 8103 in Beixinyao mine as the research object, the characteristics of drawing body shape, particle movement trace, and variation of recovery ratio are investigated by using Particle Flow Code. Furthermore, the effect of mining-caving ratio on the top coal drawing law under DGCM is revealed by the simulation results, and compared with the single-opening sequence caving method (SSCM) and the doubleopenings sequence caving method, advantages of DGCM are determined in inclined seams. The results show that the drawing body can be divided into the left and the right under DGCM. Specifically, the drawn top coal particles in the left are from the upper part of this support, that in the right are from the lower part of next support, which verifies the correctness of the theoretical analysis. The characteristics of the drawing body shape are more significant when the mining-caving ratio is relatively small. In addition, with increasing mining-caving ratio, the recovery ratio of the panel both increases gradually underDGCMand SSCM.When the miningcaving ratio is less than 1:1, the recovery ratio of DGCM is obviously higher than that of SSCM, indicating that DGCM can greatly improve the recovery ratio. While when the mining-caving ratio is larger than 1:1, the recovery ratio of two caving methods is basically equal; however, the advancing time is significantly shortened under DGCM. This study are of great significance to realize high efficiency and precise caving in LTCC with an inclined seam.

The Round Mountain gold mine, located 90 km (55 miles) north of Tonopah, NV began large-scale production in 1977. During 2008 Round Mountain Gold Corp. (RMGC) relocated the primary crusher facility approximately 300 m (1,000 ft) to make room for the next phase of openpit mining activities. This facility was installed in 1988 and used a log-crib retaining wall and dump pocket. RMGC selected Hilfiker Retaining Walls and Collins Engineers, Inc. to provide design and materials for a new 17-m- (56-ft-) high mechanically-stabilized embankment (MSE) wall to support the haul trucks at the new location. The construction contractor was EarthTech West Ltd. of Norwood, CO. An MSE wall with a cast-in-place concrete face was chosen as a durable, yet less expensive alternative to the reinforced concrete dump pocket that was originally designed for the project. The arrangement of the MSE wall is of an unusual configuration to meet a variety of operational and maintenance requirements. This paper outlines the selection process, design and construction of the MSE wall.

The Quick-Erect Stopping System (QESS) offers a new way of reducing the radon exposures of miners in Germany, especially during remediation work in old mines. The QESS is a light-weight, modular, and reusable construction kit of interlocking telescopic aluminum tubes, radon-proof foil, and expanding foam. It is designed to seal off radon-rich parts of galleries within only a few minutes. Originally, the QESS was developed to protect miners against radon exposures. Then, the QESS found the attention of several mine rescue teams at a German mining conference. The Student Mine Rescue of the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg and the Wismut Mine Rescue carried out firstmine rescue drills in Freiberg and Schlema. Additionally, a mine rescue drill was carried out by the Front Range Mine Rescue in the Edgar Experimental Mine of the Colorado School of Mines. These drills helped to improve the systemand highlighted its potential for mine rescue operations. Now, the QESS is wellsuited for small-scale mining. The QESS can be used to seal off galleries in only a few minutes to both protect miners fromradon exposures and to support mine rescue operations. Moreover, the QESS was also successfully used in ventilation experiments.

The current state of the mass transit industry in America will be examined. How and why this important urban activity shifted entirely, or almost entirely, from the private sector to the public sector. Who pays for transit? For day to day operating costs? For capital investment? The prospects for transit's future will be the next major issue addressed. In a word, they are rather good. Over the past decade there have been major new transit investments made in Atlanta, Baltimore, Washington, D.C. and Miami, as well as constant re-investment in such cities as New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Chicago. While the current administration has put a temporary halt on the initiation of any major new rail transit projects using Federal funds, there are several mechanisms localities have for using other resources for such projects. These will be explored.

Introduction The minerals exploration business, like many businesses, is faced with the problem of valuing future, risky cashflows. These cashflows are derived from those mineral deposits which have been successfully commercialized. Many deposits, however, do not have the quantities or grade of ore to be considered economic at the projected metal prices using the traditional tools of the Capital Asset Pricing Model and discounted cashflow analyses. If one calculates the future revenues, costs and cashflows of one these marginal properties, and discounted it at the appropriate risk-adjusted discount rate, it may have a negative present value. Yet such a property may still have real, positive value in the marketplace. Why would a firm pay money for a property with an (apparent) minus present value? Mining properties such as these are bought and sold in arms- length transactions on a regular basis. Why is this so? Part of the reason relates to the nature of ore reserve information. To generate cashflows, the analyst must t assume that the reserve information is known with certainty when, in fact, reserves are not known with certainty. Mineral reserves are a function of commodity price, extraction costs and the level of (usually drilling) information about the reserves. The majority of individuals involved in the mining industry can appreciate and under-stand that mining is an activity that is necessary to satisfy the very basic needs of society, and to assist in accommodating our ever-changing world. As the expression goes, ?if it can?t be grown, it has to be mined.? And at this point in time, society has granted the mining industry the right to go about the business of mining, with the general anticipation that the work will be carried out without causing undue harm to the environment or populations in and around the mining operation. The term ?sustainable development? is gaining momentum as a popular concept, and indeed it has become something of a catch-all phrase, but it is important that the idea behind the term is not cast aside as a nonsense buzz word, as it simply is an indication that development (e.g. mining) can be satisfactorily carried out with an eye toward stewardship of the environment and society. On Feb. 19, 2010, a round-table discussion (Roundtable 2010) on ?Strides Toward Sustainability in Mining? was hosted by Knight Piésold and Co. (Knight Piésold) at the Red Lion Inn and Casino in Elko, NV. Knight Piésold had local representatives (Bryan Ulrich and Steve Boyce), as well as representatives from other office locations (Cynthia Parnow and Rick Damiani from Denver, CO, and Rick Frechette from Tucson, AZ) to help facilitate the discussion. The meeting played host to 30 attendees from five states. Attendees included personnel from nine mining properties and various corporate offices. The majority of participants were people who are directly involved with environmental work on a day-to-day basis. Others were project managers whose jobs involve some level of environmental focus.
