One of the fundamental precepts of experimentation is the isolation of a single variable to quantify its individual effect. Unfortunately, the variability of natural rock joints has frustrated such isolation. This variability and the high cost of securing a large member of natural joints has lead to increasing experimental dependence on stage shearing, artificial tension fractures and/or model materials. The new apparatus described herein allows for the first time replication of real joints with field scale asperities. It employs a diamond band-saw blade with computer controlled feed table to cut joints with high precision. The feed system is capable of placement to tolerances similar to those of a high quality computer plotter. The accompanying software allows the table to cut any desired joint shape (repeating or non-repeating) within certain, over-all size limitations. Resulting joint surface dimensions and roughness as well as shear resistance indicates that the joint surfaces are reproduced with a precision similar to that possible for the control of other experimental variables such as normal and shear forces.

"INTRODUCTION Cohesive soils are notorious for causing clogging of the cutter head and the excavation chamber of tunnel boring machines (TBMs). While clogging leads to a drastic reduction in excavation performance, it further induces higher wear of tools and other parts of the cutter head and may even prevent a controlled support of the tunnel face and, thus, lead to face collapse and excess settlements or sinkholes. Employing well-balanced soil conditioning techniques, the clogging tendency can be significantly reduced. The monitoring and control of soil conditioning as well as the timely detection of potential clogging tendencies require a close monitoring of all relevant machine parameters and measurements. To this end, a reliable and powerful Process Controlling software that gathers all machine and process-related information is a prerequisite for successful mitigation of clogging-induced problems. The remainder of this contribution is organized as follows: First, a brief introduction to the Process Controlling system PROCON is given. Afterwards, the mechanisms and mitigation techniques of clogging are discussed. Finally, an example is given how Process Controlling has been employed to soil conditioning in a tunneling project with highly clogging soils.PROCESS CONTROLLING Being both the active part and a huge measuring device, the shield machine represents the core component in mechanized tunneling. This machine comprises a manifold of complex components and devices that require constant supervision and control and, thus, is equipped with a manifold of different sensors that provide a continuous monitoring of the state and condition of the machine (Maidl & Stascheit, 2014). If these data are put into the whole context of the tunneling process, they can provide insight to the assessment and optimization of the performance and to the prediction of potential risks and hazards such as, for example, the tendency of clogging of the cutter head."

In recent years, the crude oil reserves of the world have increased at the same rate as the consumption. A Consideration of the global figures suggests that adequate supplies of petroleum will be available during the next decades. On the other hand, it in a fast of economic and political significance that the reserves in the industrialized countries increase much more slowly than in the developing countries. In Western Europe the reserves have even decreased. At the present time, about 70 % of the petroleum reserves of the world are in the Middle East and in Africa in regions in which political arises are prevalent or impending. For the industrialized countries, the discrepancies between the consumption and reserves in various regions of the world are a strong urge to investigate whether oil can be recovered from other sources. The situation will probably not be changed to a large extent by the discovery of oil in the north of Alaska. The main starting materials for the production of synthetic crude oil are coal, oil shale and tar sand. In North America, where the consumption of petroleum increases more rapidly than the reserves, there are enormous deposits of each of the three materials. This fact is another incentive toward the utilization of these unconventional oil reserves, which provide a reliable basis for a supple of energy for a long time to come.

Major scientific discoveries cannot be programmed. New or frontier technology, however, can and should be planned. It is the vital force underlying the business strategy of a vigorous and profitable mining and metals company. Generally, a radical departure from existing technology is required to 1) Enhance the competitive value of ore reserves, i.e., to turn low grade or marginal reserves into competitive reserves. 2) To increase yield and decrease costs. 3) To decrease investment. 4) To increase mine life. 5) To improve product quality to meet market demands. The very definition of frontier technology implies that it is so different that the old plant, if already in use, will not be directly suitable to use the new technology. Therefore, a priori, we know that the commercialization of frontier technology would very likely involve new investment. The recommended technique of economic and technical analyses, I propose to call "Success Analysis.'' Simply stated, it forces us, by step- by-step procedure, to ask "what is needed to succeed in this particular project." Therefore, the first step is to identify what is meant by "success." The definition of "success" requires an agreement with top management or sponsors of the project as to what constitutes "success" in their minds as contrast to the technical people perception of "success." In general, top management would define success as meeting: 1) The technical objectives, i.e., technology being developed would produce the desired product at the acceptable quality. 2) Financial objectives, i.e., when commercialized, the project's capital cost, operating costs and return on investment are better than the projects they would normally fund. The return has to be better because new technology is inherently riskier. 3) Marketing objectives in that the project will produce product of acceptable quality in timely manner, i.e., scale-up to commercial plant would not cause undue delays in start-up and that large fix-up expenditure would not be required to protect the projected return on the investment. Many projects are started in the laboratory to develop "Frontier Technology" in mineral processing. Most of these efforts are never commercialized. There are many causes of these failures. The major causes are listed below: 1) Inadequate communication with the sponsors of the project so that project objectives are defined and agreed to by all. 2) Ill-defined technical problems. 3) Incomplete development of technology. This has two major components: a. Incorrect scale-up and engineering. b. Inadequate start-up and maintenance planning. 4) Incomplete and over-optimistic process economics. 5) Lack of understanding of the future behavior of the marketplace. 6) Failure to complete R&D effort by the time it is needed. 7) Incorrect projections of human resources required; that is, technical, managerial and operating. 8) Lack of realistic forecast of the expenditures required for commercialization of the R&D effort. These pitfalls can be avoided by comprehensive planning and the use of success analysis technique. The major elements in "Success Analysis" are: 1) Identification of the "need" for new technology. 2) Unbiased and complete scale-up engineering. 3) Acceptable economic feasibility with enough margin of error in the sale prices and operating costs to justify the inherent risks in frontier technology. 4) Timing for availability of investment capital and markets. Many failures in the development of frontier technology are preordained because the initial selection of the research project has been without adequate attention to the needs of the industry. Many very innovative hydrometallurgical processes for recovery of copper from concentrates were developed in the past twenty years. They have not adapted except to a very minor extent because they did not satisfy the success analysis criteria. "INTRODUCTION The design, development, fabrication, and test of cryogenic breathing apparatus is part of a much larger effort funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and managed through a Space Act Agreement with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida. This effort is designed to create cryogenically based life support equipment that is responsive to the needs of miners as required by the Miner Act of 2006. Our goal was to design and build a liquid air based self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) that lasted 2 hours and would be used for the egress of miners during a mining accident and be refillable while worn. Therefore, the current report describes tests of an Advanced Cryogenic Breathing Apparatus (termed the ACryoBA) designed to provide miners egressing an emergency situation with a two-hour open-circuit SCBA. The ACryoBA utilizes low pressure cryogenic liquid air instead of high pressure compressed air commonly used in most commercially available SCBA. The ACryoBA can also be self-filled from strategically placed Cryogenic Air Supply and Fill Stations (CryoASFS) initially, and thereafter on the egress route approximately every 1 hour and 30 minutes with a 30 minute air reserve. The ACryoBA evolved originally from a one hour Liquid Air Pack (LAP) developed in the 1980’s for Space Shuttle Rescue forces allowing for longer duration and cool air (Figure 1). It was used successfully for many years, through the end of the Space Shuttle Program. The first attempt at a mine egress pack was the Cryogenic Breathing Apparatus (Figure 2). It was to have a low profile, two hours of breathing, attitude independence, and a simple rapid refill while in use. The CryoBA met the two hour criteria, but with difficulty due to excessive heat leakage caused by the dual 4 liter Dewar design. Much of the stored air was lost as it vaporized faster than it could be used. However, the pack was successful in demonstrating both attitude independence and a simple rapid refill capability. The ACryoBA project was designed to continue the progression and address the deficiencies in the CryoBA. The ACryoBA pack was designed to last 2 hours. It minimizes the heat leakage with a single Dewar and thereby requires less liquid air. The single Dewar design also minimizes weight, making it much more manageable by the user (Figure 3). The ACryoBA complies with 42 CFR part 84 NIOSH certification test requirements. One critical requirement for the ACryoBA is operation in positions other than vertical for periods up to 1/4 (i.e. 30 minutes) of the rated service life of 2 hours; this was accomplished by use of new technology called the “attitude independent pickup” which is abbreviated “AIP.” The AIP, developed by BCS Life Support LLC (patent #8,899,226), has a tube going from the top flange down through the center of the Dewar. At the end it has a flexible bellows and a weighted end. Due to the flexible nature of the bellows, the pickup at the end is free to rotate and follow the liquid level around within +/- 90o of vertical."

Management of mineral resources through land-use planning procedures is not a new concept, particularly at the local level of government. Colorado may well be one of the first states, however, to vigorously attempt to evaluate on both the state-wide and regional basis, mineral resource potential and to make certain that potential for mineral resources is included as one of the primary factors considered in the local land-use decision-making process. Less than a decade ago the only consideration given to mineral resource extraction, particularly aggregate resources, was whether or not they could be produced at the particular time they were needed. This attitude has now shifted to the other extreme, not only in Colorado, but other states as well, so that other interests, especially housing projects, mountain subdivisions, recreational and wilderness areas are gaining prime consideration in land-use decisions. Ideally, in a more acceptable median position, mineral resource potential would receive definite consideration at the local level.

Many investigators believe that column flotation cells offer significant advantages over standard mechanical machines for the flotation of fine particles. However, because of their unique design and operation, conventional techniques for flotation cell scale-up and design cannot be applied to columns. In an attempt to help alleviate this problems a population balance model based on first principles has been developed for fine particle flotation in a column. Two different terms have been considered in the model, i.e., transport and rate. Transport terms, incorporating fluid flow and bouyancy, are used to describe the movement of air bubbles, unattached particles and bubble-particle aggregates along the length of the column. Rate terms, which describe the bubble-particle attachment process, have been derived from first principle considerations. Because the model is based on first principles, it can be useful for the design, control, optimization and scale-up of column flotation cells.

"Construction of the longest road tunnel in Mexico is part of Acapulco’s alternate roadway to the scenic roadway project. This article provides a brief summary regarding details of the construction since the project began. Work was done by skilled engineers and Mexican workers that includes outstanding execution of the work in an urban and tourist area. This project will have a strong impact on the steady development of the port of Acapulco.Project locationAcapulco’s Alternate Roadway Project is currently under construction in the city of Acapulco, located in the Guerrero state of Mexico. It is an 8-km (5-mile) long roadway that starts at the Icacos neighborhood, heading toward Acapulco’s airport, crossing a drill-and-blast tunnel that is 3,160 m (10,350 ft) long under Veladero Park, a mountainous area. The tunnel overburden reaches a depth of 380 m (1,250 ft) approximately at the central point of the horizontal alignment, and continues with a 4-km (2.5-mile) long elevated road to connect to the existing Viaducto Diamante toll road (Fig. 1).Tunnel construction has already been finished using two portals for drilling and blasting operations; Brisamar Portal on the west side and Cayaco Portal on the east side (Fig. 2).Geometric dataOnly two main excavation cross-sections were considered in the executive design. The first one corresponds to the running tunnel for a three-lane vehicle section, with crosssection areas between 120 and 130 m2 (1,290 and 1,400 sq ft) taking into consideration different geological and geotechnical conditions to be encountered (Fig. 3).The second one corresponds to eight emergency bays, each one 50 m (164 ft) long, laid down within the tunnel outline, located at 400 m (1,312 ft) from each one with excavation cross-sections between 156 to 169 m2 (1,680 to 1,820 sq ft), in accordance to geological and geotechnical conditions to be encountered (Fig. 4).The tunnel’s horizontal alignment is completely straight, having a small curve within the vertical alignment on Cayaco portal, because there were some differences in levels when tunnel excavation started. Tunnel slopes were designed in such a way that rainwater does not run down into the tunnel at any time."

Introduction America's workforce is the heart of the nation's economy. The health of its members is a matter of national priority. Statistics show that the most common cause of job difficulties is excess use of alcohol or other drugs. Up to 75% of these troubled employees can be returned to productive careers at little expense and with great benefit to their industries. Of the 1.5 million private corporations in the US, only about 500 have alcohol treatment programs. Even fewer have drug abuse programs. It is time that the myths and prejudices surrounding alcohol and drug abuse are dispelled and help is offered. Corporations and labor unions are now finding that programs to treat these diseases benefit both the employees and the industry. The employee derives health and job security. The company sees increased productivity and decreased costs in sick pay and absenteeism. Unfortunately, three-fourths of the nation's 90.5 million workers are employed in establishments of fewer than 500 employees. In these settings, it is unlikely that either management or the unions will take the initiative in developing programs. Alcohol alone affects the health and productivity of nearly 8% of any workforce. This translates to more than 5 million employees in small business. These workers present an opportunity and a challenge. Alcohol abuse costs the nation nearly $116 billion annually. Seventy billion dollars is attributed to lost production. Medical expenditures related to alcohol are estimated to be nearly $13 billion. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) estimates the cost of substance abuse to industry to be in excess of $4 billion a year. In addition to its economic impact, substance abuse has serious personal and social consequences. The mining industry experiences the same exposure as other industries to alcohol, drug abuse, and other employee problems. However, the existence of these problems poses special hazards because of the unique conditions found in mining. Mining has many safety and health hazards. Employees must have full control of their faculties and give full attention to the tasks at hand. During in situ uranium mining using ammonium bicarbonate lixiviant, the ammonium exchanges with cations on the ore's clay. Mter mining is complete, the ammonium may desorb into post-leach ground water. For the particular ore studied, other chemicals (i.e., uranium and selenium) which are mobilized during the leach process, have also been found in the post-leach ground water. Laboratory column tests, used to simulate the leaching process, have shown that aluminum chloride can rapidly remove ammonium from the ore and thus greatly reduce the subsequent ammonium leakage level into ground water. The aluminum chloride has also been found to reduce the leakage levels of uranium and selenium. In addition, the aluminum chloride treatment produces a rapid improvement in permeability.

Introduction Traditional aggregate sources - riverbeds and alluvial fans - located close to developing urban centers are being foreclosed to mining. As sand and gravel reserves are depleted, nearby production plants cannot secure additional, adjacent reserves and are being forced to close down. The sand and gravel industry, in many respects, is its own worst enemy. It promotes development, street paving, home building, and industrial and commercial centers. Economics make us favor developments close to our operations. Thus, we encourage development by our neighbors, who soon become our detractors. Current Aggregate Mining Problems Urban development is not compatible with sand and gravel mining. Neighbors dislike the view of pits and quarries, and they complain about dust, noise, and trucking. In general, the neighbors are not happy being close to an aggregate source. This is reflected in land use or zoning laws. In most localities, mining requires a special-use permit. Public hearings are required before a legislative body. If a large group of opponents show up, legislators will often deny the land use. Urban areas are seeing traditional close-in sand and gravel sites becoming no longer available for industry. A parallel situation is also developing in most urban areas. That is, the not-in-my-backyard attitude toward landfills. As urban areas mature; a significant amount of change takes place in the physical makeup of a city. Streets and parking lots deteriorate and need repaving. Curbs and gutters need to be relocated. This necessitates a place to dispose of excess, or old, paving and structural material. Since landfills have become at least as difficult to permit as sand and gravel sites, they are becoming remote from urban areas. A significant portion of the structural material that needs to be disposed of is concrete and asphalt. This material is heavier than other materials. Thus, the cost of moving a large volume of very heavy material to a landfill becomes very expensive. In California, dump truck transportation is regulated by the State Public Utilities Commission through minimum rate tariffs. A rule of thumb for estimating the cost of such transportation is once the material is loaded, the extra kilometer (mile) costs $0.09/t ($0.08 per st). Thus, to haul an 18-t (20-st) road an extra 32 km (20 miles) will cost about $32. Because of its remote location, the cost of hauling aggregates to the point of use in an urban area becomes excessive - about the same as hauling the material to a landfill. Here is a classic example for synergism. If we could save the transportation cost of heavy demolition material by disposing it relatively close to the central city (its source), and at the same time provide an aggregate source close to the central city (its point of use), two difficult economic situations can be solved. Thus, the develop¬ment of recycling concrete and asphalt. Mining Concrete and Asphalt There are two methods of mining concrete and asphalt. The first is to pick up the old pavement in pieces. Thin, cracked pavement can usually be lifted from the grade with a front-end loader. It will break up into manageable-sized pieces. With heavier pavement, it is sometimes necessary to intentionally break it up with a stomper or heavy ripper. The pieces are loaded into heavy dump trucks and shipped to the crushing site. RIP is the process of recovering uranium from an unclarified slime pulp which comes in contact with a moving bed of ion exchange resin, T e sand-slime separation of the acid-leach slurry is accomplished through the use of cyclones and spiral, akins type classifiers. Course sands are discarded to tailings and the combined slimes and leach liquor become the IX feed. Uranium in the IX feed is absorbed on the resin and after exhaustion the barren pulp is directed to tails, Following the uranium exhaustion cycle an eluant solution passes through the resin bed stripping the uranium from the beads, The uranium is precipitated from the clarified pregnant eluant, filtered, dried and packaged for shipment to the AEC, Normally, the ore received at the Mines Development plant is a loosely cemented sandstone containing small quantities of clay and bentonite, The ore is easily crushed and requires only a 1/3 load of rods in the rod mill to reduce the ore to grain size, Very little of the ore is recirculated by the 42" spiral classifier.

PENNSYLVANIA 16803 To the Editor: With respect to the Fenvessy and Schwab article, I offer the following: As thorough as the study may be, it still has a glaring weakness. The presumption of constant supply in face of falling demand - their "low growth" case - is just wrong. It does not allow for the rapid migration, by transfer and change of major, from former high-demand programs, such as mining, to programs that have more recently obtained the cachet of job security. The figures that are shown for rapid growth in mining engineering enrollments in the period 1970-1981 are, no doubt, correct and reflect a rapid inmigration of students into mining. A similar out-migration, which began in 1982, from mining to other engineering and science disciplines is not factored into their study. Given 1983-84 enrollments, which can already be documented, it is clear that the low-growth case will, by 1985, be 50% or less of 1981. I wish students would pick their majors on the basis of their own individual abilities and interests rather than rushing lemming-like to programs that are reputed to have jobs. In the end, students will have better jobs and careers if their college majors match their talents and we, in the academic side of things, will have a livelier and more dedicated student. Lee W. The article is, unfortunately, inaccurate because of the erroneous assumptions it makes in its basic premises. To cite but two of these, class sizes will not continue at their current level, but will, in fact, alter dramatically as a function of the perceived immediate job market rather than the future trend, so that enrollments are already below those predicted. Secondly, it is patently wrong to assume that everyone who gets a degree in the mining field will continue until retirement to work in that field. People who do not have a job in the industry will get work elsewhere and often do not come back. Others will later move to different areas. My major argument, however, deals with the underlying assumptions and methodology of the survey itself, with the concomitant challenge to the subsequent conclusions. It is no great secret that the technological world is undergoing a dramatic revolution. Computer use is rapidly spreading to the point where the microcomputer will be an integral part of every mine engineer's desk. Such a tool, which for optimal benefit must be operated by knowledgeable mining engineers, will make mining much more of a science than the current level. Introduction Mining and minerals transportation spans the distance from the pit face and mine wall to the consumer. This transportation can be as simple as coal transfer from the mine and preparation plant by conveyor to a mine mouth electric generating plant. Or it can be as complex as copper ore transportation: concentrated, smelted, refined; drawn into wire and insulated; and cut into reels and transported to local industrial supply houses. The route of aluminum from the bauxite pits to the supermarket shelf in the form of household food wrap is another example of the potential complexity of minerals transportation. For perspective, however, mine to market minerals transportation can be split into three components: materials handling, transportation, and distribution. It should also be recognized that each mineral, market, producer, and consumer has unique transportation characteristics regarding costs, transportation mode, and alternatives in the transportation scheme. Some obvious considerations are the number of producers and consumers, the number of markets and customers the mineral serves. Concerning the latter, are you selling a million tons to one customer or a ton each to a million customers? Transportation volume About the only generalization that can be made about minerals transportation concerns the large volume of materials involved. No other industry compares to the mining and minerals industry in its huge movement of product in the crude, semi-processed, processed, fabricated, and converted states, as shown by the accompanying table of US mineral production. Whether it is crushed stone or sand and gravel moving by truck to a local market from local producers, or coal moving by 9.07 kt (10,000 st) unit trains from a mine to a power plant, or iron ore moving by lake vessel from the upper lake ports to the lower lake steel mills, mineral transportation volumes are huge. The nature of production and consumption affects the transportation mode. More than 60% of the coal moves by rail. The majority of iron ore moves by lake vessel. Ninety per cent of the sand and gravel and more than 80% of crushed stone moves by truck. Factors Affecting Minerals Transportation Some would define minerals transportation as the cost and route to move a mineral product from the first point of sale to the first point of consumption. "SUMMARY Investigations from tunnel face are part of risk mitigation measures during the excavation works. With the tunnel equipment, percussion drillings of up to 30-40m can be achieved. Core drillings are state of art method for investigation exceeding 50m. At Koralm base tunnel, up to 270m deep percussion drillings were performed with drilling rigs and accompanied by an intensive investigation program. These investigations consisted of monitoring during the drilling, field tests (with packer, using the preventer, borehole imaging) and in laboratory. Percussion drillings are cheaper and save time of interruption of the excavation progress. INTRODUCTION As part of a proper risk management, horizontal advance drillings during excavation of underground works can be seen as state of art and meet wide acceptance. Core drillings, deep and shallow percussion drillings can be differed. The selection of the type of drilling, meanwhile, causes intensive discussions. On the one hand, only a core drilling allows a direct investigation of the rock mass expected during later excavation works. On the other hand core drillings are expensive in both cost and time – if there is no excavation progress during the investigation measures – in construction time. Percussion drillings can be performed as rapid investigation measure with the excavation equipment (“Jumbo”) allowing two dimensional image of the ground around the cross section. There is some limitation concerning a reasonable depth of approximately 30m and a borehole diameter of 76mm. The applications of preventer, packer or borehole imaging are hardly applicable. By use of a drilling rig depths of percussion drillings of several hundred meters can be achieved relative easily and there is less limitation of the borehole diameter. Installation of a preventer is possible, as well as packer tests and borehole measurements (imaging, gyroscope, borehole geophysics). The gap of information between core and percussion drilling cannot be closed completely, but it can be reduced substantially and sufficiently by combination of an intensive program of measurements and analysis accompanying the investigation works."

The kinetics of green pelletization in a laboratory balling drum have been studied, using pulverized limestone as a model system. The growth characteristics of green pellets were found to be extremely sensitive to the moisture content of the material. Empirical kinetic equations, which incorporate a function of specific surface of the pellets as the criterion for growth potential, have been found to describe growth in a nucleation region and in a ball growth region. The rate constants in the kinetic equations are strongly dependent on the moisture content of the material being pelletized. Size distributions of the halls at different stages of pelletizing are also discussed.

Lornex Mining Corporation operates an open pit porphyry copper mine in the Highland Valley southwest of Kamloops with a rated capacity of 43 500 TPD (48,000 TPD). It went into production in April 1972. Its concentrator consists of two grinding and flotation circuits in parallel each composed of a 6 000 KW (8,000 HP) 9,75 m (32 foot) diameter by 4,724 m (15'-6") semi-autogenous primary mill feeding two 3 000 KW (4,000 HP) 5,029 m (16.5 foot) diameter by 7,01 m (23 foot) secondary ball mills each feeding a bank of flotation cells. ,The original tailings system picked up the tailings from the flota¬tion circuits in a concrete collection box in the mill and carried the 36% solids density by weight slurry 488 m (1,600LF) through a 1100 mm (42 inch) diameter wood stave pipeline on a .46 percent slope to three 99,06 m (325 foot) diameter center drive thickeners. From the collection box under the thickeners the tailings line con¬sisted of three sections, carrying 50% solids density slurry. The first section consisted of 1460 m (4,800 LF) of 910 mm (36 inch) asbestos cement pipe for gravity flow from the thickener under flow elevation of 1252,4 m (4,109 feet) to the first pump station at elevation 1207,6 m (3,962 feet). Eight concrete drop boxes were used to limit the maximum slope on the pipeline to 0.5 percent.

Your chairman has asked me to deal with questions of education relative to our present and projected trends in the field of mineral expiration. First comes our definition of education--and education is not the merely formal acquiring of academic knowledge, but the understanding, using and projection of knowledge into our channels of life and thought activity. This past year makes us realize the extent to which price and economic cut-off may stimulate or curtail exploration,, But exploration does not consist solely in the discovery of sources of material. There is just as inspiring and imaginative a territory in the develop¬ment of uses and application--and no one in our base metal industry but would hope that our educational processes would fertilize those springs of inspiration that lie dormant in us all, toward the- imaginative conception of new uses--lead roofing cloths or felts, non-tarnishable copper utensils, further zinc solid state application. Thus an educational pattern should seek to develop imagination and thinking beyond--the possibility of that small but oh so difficult step just ahead of the existing,

The Ernest Henry copper-gold project is located in North West Queensland, Australia and commenced production in late August 1997. Utilizing a philosophy of selecting the biggest proven equipment available Ernest Henry at full production ¥ill treat 9 Mtpa through a single grinding line over a 15 year mine life. 350.000 tonnes of concentrate a year will be produced, containing 95,000 tonnes of copper and 120,000 ounces of gold. The two mills recently commissioned at the Ernest Henry Copper/Gold Mine are a 10.4m x 5.1m (34 ft x 16.75 ft) SAG Mill and a 6.1m x 8.4m (20 ft x 27.5 ft) ball mill. The mills have a power draw of 11 MW (14745 hp) and 5.5 MW (7373 hp) respectively. While the SAG Mill is not the largest SAG Mill in the world, it is the largest shell-supported SAG Mill in the world. The Ernest Henry mills epitomize the new standard design of large grinding mills. The design was introduced more than 20 years ago and has been further developed from extensive experience with grinding mills, and the need to produce a design, which overcomes the recognized problems of large mills. The result is a design with the potential to be used for mills up to the largest for which machine tools can be found to fabricate and machine them, currently approximately 15m (48') overall diameter.
