Peru is a mineral hot spot in the world today. Newmont is in the exploratory phase of this mining cycle, a phase full of optimism and expectations. But exploration is high risk. There will be successes but also failures. Many foreign companies will come and go. But it is the responsibility of the mining industry leadership of Peru and the government to continue to foster an environment conducive to investment. This is the time of year companies begin planning their next annual report. Last year, Newmont’s was called “new horizons.” It highlighted the company’s global expansion into Peru, Uzbekistan and Indonesia. Now, projects that were only on the horizon a year ago are moving into production. So “turning opportunity into gold” may be this year’s theme.

Design models for belt conveyors used in mines predict both the belt power requirements and belt tensions. Conveyors with slightly downhill profiles are more complex to predict due to the way that models such as CEMA interpret friction. Performance of a particular conveyor in relation to other conveyors in the same system requires an analysis of natural stopping times, braked times and take-up location. A review of CEMA-based PC models is presented for design of underground multi-flight belt systems.

A number of interesting and. important phenomena were revealed during a study of the response of beryl to sulfonate flotation (1). Perhaps the most important observation is the effect of various cations on flotation response. Experiments showed that in the vicinity of pH = 3. 0, about three ppm Fe.+++ increased recovery of leached beryl from about 60 to 100 per cent, whereas about four ppm Ca++ reduced the recovery from 60 to 2 per cent. With the exception of ferric iron, all of the other cations investigated reduced flotation recoveries drastically at this pH. As postulated in the paper "Sulfonate Flotation of Beryl", (1) even with low concentrations of polyvalent cations and sulfonate (on the order of one ppm), cation¬ sulfonates are precipitated immediately in solution. That is, blueish-white clouds .were noted to form after given additions of salts to. known solutions of sulfonate. Furthermore, it was also shown that one-hundred-fold more ferric iron than necessary to form the precipitated cloud had to be added to effect complete flotation. In other words, some form of solid ferric sulfonate was found to function as the collector in these systems. The form of the compound was suggested to be Fe (RSC3)2OH and that bonding to the surface occurs through the hydrogen of the hydroxyl. As the form of this compound was shown to be dependent on the extent of hydrolysis of ferric iron, it is to be expected that ferric iron will be unique in some pH region. Further, if the presence of hydroxyl in the neutral precipitated compound is of primary importance, then other cations should function similarly but at different values of pH, since they will hydrolyze at different concentrations of hydroxyl ion. To determine whether the premise of hydrolysis is correct, the study was extended to quartz systems lit the presence of various cations at various values of pH.

Facing lower gold prices, gold mine operators throughout the world are seeking ways to reduce costs for treating refractory sulfide ores. Many gold mines, currently producing oxide ores, have underlying refractory sulfide deposits and the operators could extend the mine life by processing these sulfides. Fortunately, oxidation technologies for refractory ores need not be complex nor costly. GeoBiotics, Inc. has developed heap biooxidation technologies (GEOCOAT™) for treatment of refractory gold ores and concentrates. GEOCOATTM uses simple low cost unit operations common to heap leaching of gold and copper ores. The cost effectiveness and flexibility of GEOCOAT™ heap biooxidation allows mining companies to expand operations to include refract01y ore. In addition, GEOCOAT™ can be utilized to supplement or replace existing oxidation processes such as roasting, autoclaving, or agitated tank biooxidation, and to treat a lower resource grade than is currently economic. The GEOCOAT™ technology involves coating sulfide concentrates onto sized support rocks and biooxidizing the sulfides in a heap configuration. After biooxidation the concentrate is stripped from the support rock, neutralized and leached in conventional cyanidation facilities. Ashanti Goldfields Company Ltd. (AGC) produces over 885,000 ounces of gold per year from oxide and refractory ores at its Obuasi operations in Ghana. Refractory flotation concentrates are treated in roasters and in the world's largest stirred tank biooxidation facility. In August 1998, AGC and GeoBiotics jointly constructed and operated a field demonstration heap of the GEOCOATTM process at the Obuasi operations. The heap contained I 082 tonnes of support rock and 125 tonnes of concentrate. The heap was approximately 19 meters square at the base and 3.8 meters high, and ran for 88 days after which the concentrate was reclaimed. Average gold recovery after biooxidation was 91.5% with a NaCN consumption of 8.6 kg/t. Baseline gold recovery by direct cyanidation of the concentrate was 53.8%.

Studies have been carried out to optimize the VCR's mining sys- tem on the basis of synthetic analysis at Fankou Pb-Zn mine in Southern China. The synthetic e- valuation method is proposed for selection of mining alternatives and stope dimension optimization techniques. Theoretic calculation and computer optimization of the fragmentation of rock blasted by multispherical explosive charges are discussed. The mathematical and optimal fragmentation models are built. The optimum model is built for the main mining operations such as drilling, blasting and haulage. Lt can be used to evaluate VCR?s mining projects, select mining parameters and provide design fundations. From the point of view of system research on the geomechanical process, stoping technological process and benefit, the complex method of optimization is proposed for VCR's mining. Using computer simulation, based on this model, the optimal parameters are established and analysed. An effective approach is provided for research on the mining method optimization and getting better economical benefits from the application and improvement of VCR's method.

Introduction The theoretical analysis of tumbling mill energetics and performance has largely neglected mill dimensionality, and, in particular, the importance of the length/diameter (L/D) ratio. This is in spite of the fact that practice varies substantially: geographically, for semi-autogenous and autogenous mills, as between North America and South Africa/Scandinavia, and historically, for overflow ball mills, for which the L/D ratio has increased significantly from the earliest small mills to the largest mills currently. The present study is concerned primarily with the influence of the L/D ratio on the design and operation of overflow ball mills, on the occurrence of the overload phenomenon, and on the limits, if any, it may impose on mill capacities because of critical pulp axial velocity limits. It will be shown that the shape factor is of major importance in this area and that its adjustment to the extent that this is practical should remove the diameter limitations previously postulated for this mill type. Dimensionality in mill design Ball mill shape factors in the period prior to 1927 (Taggart, 1927) averaged 1.1/1 for 29 center discharge mills and 1.0/1 for 30 peripheral discharge mills. With the resumption of new plant construction after the 1930s depression, the Morenci concentrator continued the 1/1 ratio with its 3.1 x 3.1 m (10 x 10 ft) mills. The ratio was increased progressively from then on, reaching 1.6 and 1.8/1 for the largest overflow mills currently. As shown recently (Arbiter, 1989), this is in sharp contrast to autogenous and SAG mill shapes, for which the ratio averages 0.4 in North America. On the other hand, South African practice, starting at the turn of the century with autogenous mills having 4/1 ratios, moved toward 1/1 until recently, when a 2.5/ 1 ratio mill was installed. The reasons given for such divergent practice for mill shape factors are in some respects contradictory and generally inconclusive. The most complete discussion from a practical viewpoint (Dor and Bassarear, 1982) is limited to primary SAG and autogenous mills. Considerations of ball mill dimensionality have had a twofold direction. On the one hand, it has been argued that ball mill efficiencies should increase with increasing diameter and that the specific energy for a particular grind should be reduced accordingly. An inadvertent test of this idea at the Bougainville operation (Burns and Erskine, 1983) resulted in drastic underpowering, which led to failure to reach design capacity until additional mills were installed. This can be taken as strong evidence against any increase in efficiency with diameter. In another direction, it has been argued (Arbiter and Harris, 1982, 1983) that there is a limit to ball mill diameters because of the demonstrable limit to axial flow velocities evident in the overload phenomenon, which as a fact is incontrovertible. But that it places a limit on mill diameters overlooks the evidence given below that appropriate variation in the L/D ratio will permit major increases in diameter, limited only by constructional or economic factors. The present study was directed toward quantifying the overload phenomenon through examination of the influence of mill dimensionality variation and mill operating variables on its occurrence. It is shown that varying the operating conditions, specifically the load fraction and the fraction critical speed, can reduce the risk of overload for existing operations; while appropriate decreases in the L/D ratio can minimize the risk in the design of new circuits. Ball mill overload Ball mill overload is a consequence of the approach to a critical velocity with increasing feed rates or circulating loads. Although the effect has been known for over 50 years, there have been no previous attempts to quantify it. The following description of the ball mill as a flow system is the preliminary to a quantitative analysis: 1) In the absence of a ball load, axial flow of pulp through a mill resembles open channel flow, except for disturbances near the shell due to shell/lifter rotation. 2) For a given ball load (Lf), the void fraction available for pulp hold-up (H) for the ascending portion of the load is approximately 0.4 Lf. In the descending portion, it is greater than this and increases with fraction critical speed (Fc) because of load expansion. 3) Increasing the feed rate increases pulp hold-up and progressively fills the available void space. At a critical flow rate, which depends on system geometry, hydraulic head and pulp rheology, void filling reaches its limit; a pool forms rapidly and fills available space outside the ball load and up to the overflow level. Prior to this, pulp discharges mainly along the ascending rim of the overflow. 4) For a small mill (Lo et al., 1990), it has been shown that with increasing feed rates the critical filling is at or near 50% of the mill volume. Power drops rapidly when this level is reached, as required by the torque formula. 5) The transition to overload is associated with the following phenomena: a) The decrease in power draw. b) Damping of mill sound. c) Reduced comminution of coarser feed sizes, probably due to reduced direct impact in the presence of a pool. d) Increased circulating loads, which further intensify the overload, and increased density of cyclone underflows, which can lead to roping. e) Conditions beyond overload are not known because feed rates are not delibelrately increased beyond this point. f) The existence of the phenomenon limits the capacity of a mill with a fixed set of operating conditions and can prevent the balancing of hard ore feed rate decreases by increases in soft ore rates.

For traditional underhand cut-and-fill mining operations, it can be challenging to design a suitable cemented paste backfill (CPB) mix that can meet the necessary strength requirements and yet maintain its ductility. In deep underground metal mines, the CPB must achieve a high enough strength to be competent under high stress conditions while also remaining ductile enough to withstand high strain from squeezing ground as underhand mining continues under backfilled stopes. To eliminate ground falls that result in injuries and fatalities, researchers from the Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have partnered with Aerix Industries, a producer of concrete additives, to study the effects of foaming agents on the strength and ductility of CPB. Molycorp's gravity type panel-caving operation employs a system of short raises to transfer ore from the Grizzly Level to the Haulage Level. The raises have normally been developed using a conventional drill-and-blast method or a combination conventional/raiseboring method. A new method was needed that would be less labor intensive, provide a safer work environment for personnel, provide a stable raise that could be self-supporting and a method that would be cost competitive with the conventional system.

While many mine tunnels are developed through ground that must be riddled with the sources of small (and larger) mining induced seismic events, recorded by the mine seismic monitoring systems, we do not see planar discontinuities classified as seismic sources in the geotechnical databases. Here we list criteria that may be useful to identify discontinuities in drill core which are dynamic slip surfaces, parts of mining induced seismic sources. Such shear rupture surfaces in core would generally be powdery, cohesionless, and rough on cm scale. Finely broken rock and rock flour may be found in the core boxes at the discontinuities. Slickensides would be soft (easily destroyed) and kinematically consistent with the local stress field. In some cases, a cross fabric would be present, orthogonal to the slickensides, being the intersections of en-echelon extension fractures, within the dynamic shear zones, with the shear zone walls.

There is a misconception that mineral-project economic evaluations in the former Soviet Union are either nonexistent or very limited. This is not the case. In fact, there are at least two basic methods that can be utilized to evaluate the vast mineral resources of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Evaluation procedures are based either on a comparison to known projects, which may rely on limited available data, or on potential-profit calculations, which generally uses more extensive databases. Significant philosophical differences between these systems and those utilized in the Western world include the following: •Under the centralized-government system, the economic evaluation of a mineral project was based on artificially determined mineral prices and costs. Every ten to 12 years, prices for concentrates and metals were established by the Council of Ministers and remained unchanged until the next reconsideration of prices .

INTRODUCTION Mined underground chambers specifically designed for the purpose of storing liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) at ambient temperatures have been in use for over thirty years. The first caverns were developed by Warren Petroleum of Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1948, for its plants in Texas. The basic concept of an LPG-storage cavern is to create a space in an impervious formation at a depth sufficiently below the water table so that if any movement of fluid occurs the ground water will enter rather than the gas escape from the cavern. In the past, the primary reason for LPG storage underground has been its attractive cost advantages over steel storage on the surface. At current prices the cost of storing 7.949 ML (50,000 barrels) would be equivalent, whether stored on the surface or underground; whereas 79.494 ML (500,000 barrels) of storage underground costs only one-fifth of surface storage. It is usually uneconomical to excavate less than 79.494 cu m (50,000 barrels) of storage space. The fixed costs - engineering, mainshaft and ventilation shaft - are a substantial part of the total cost, whereas the incremental costs for excavating additional storage are relatively low. Recent concern over the hazards posed by the handling and storage of LPG and liquefied natural gas (LNG) has led to a new interest in the underground storage of these gases. Of the halogens, the gold iodide complexes are the most stable in aqueous solutions. A series of experiments were performed to investigate the kinetics and mechanism of the leaching reaction between gold and iodide. Using a rotation disk technique, the effects of rotation speed, iodide and iodine concentration, temperature, pH and in the presence of different electrolytes were measured. Oxygen and hydrogen peroxide were also examined as oxidants in the iodide system. The first order reaction rate was found with respect to 13 and half order reaction rate with respect to 1-. The comparison of gold leaching between iodide and cyanide is also presented, in which a rate constant of about 2.6x10-9 mol/cm2? sec for 10-2 M I- and 5x10-3 M I2 was obtained. This value is close to that -for typical cyanidation. Cyclic voltammetry experiments were also performed to examine the electrochemical nature of the reaction which will be presented in part II of this study.

A discussion of the practicalities of carrying out a material balance using simple nodal sensitivity analysis is given. The calculation of the errors involved is reviewed and the concept of co-variance examined through computer simulation. The use of co-variances in such calculations is shown to be practically insignificant. The method proves to be rapid and relatively accurate provided the circuit topology is correct.

Introduction This section of the text presents a general review of the different types of concentrate marketing contracts. Too often the marketing strategy is ignored in the design phase of the project and the producer is left to the mercy of the buyer. Many items such as concentrate grade, impurity levels and moisture content of the concentrate my enhance, or severely restrict the producers ability to make a profit it. Close attention should be paid to the design of the concentrator which can improve the quality of the concentrates, thus the ability to increase the rider of potential buyers can be enhanced. Difficult at best, is the position of the miner who only has one outlet available for its production. Obviously, the trade offs must be evaluated. For example, concentrate grade vs recovery and grind/filtering capacity vs moisture of the concentrate all must be weighted against freight cost to a potential buyer. In addition, the above considerations must be weighed against the capital cost to the miner. This chapter is intended to highlight important articles that are included in short and long term agreements and to give a new miner/producer some insight into hat my or my not add value to the product. Unless the miner sells the product directly to a consumer such as a gold, or silver producer, or to a large enough operation that has a totally intergrated system to make a finished product, most miners are forced to sell to buyers who ultimately will refine and market the product. Types of Contract Agreements There are many types of contract agreements just as there are colors in the rainbow, however, most contracts fall into three basic categories. (1) Smelter Schedules: Designed for the small producer, the odd lot of concentrate, smelter flux and precious metal ore. Albeit custom smelters are becoming fever by the day, because of pollution control requirements and financial difficulties, most remaining custom smelters have a smelter schedule. A smelter schedule is a posted list of charges and conditions that the smelter will buy material from a seller. Smelter schedules exist for copper, lead, zinc, silver and gold (Handbook for Small Mining Enterprises, Montana Bureau of Mines). (2) Short Term Custom Contracts: Large mine producers frequently use Short Term Contracts where the seller has the buyer frame a contract that is tailored to the sellers’ production. "Hard rock mines move large volumes of material. But the conveyors essential to this movement suffer lots of problems, including carryback, spillage, dust, and belt wander. Many of these issues are created at the transfer points where the belts are loaded. This presentation will start with an overview of the latest transfer point systems that incorporate safety and serviceability by design. It will then report on recent projects. One project is the Conveyor B Transfer at the Coeur Rochester silver mine near Lovelock, Nevada. Here performance was improved with the installation of belt support cradles, engineered chute walls with external wear liner, and a compact dust collector. A second project is the improvement of belt support idlers and skirtboard sealing in a long loading zone of a conveyor under the concentrator at an Arizona copper mine. THE IMPORTANCE OF TRANSFER POINTS Conveyors are essential in mine material handling. Their performance will often make the difference in mine productivity and profitability. A key to conveyor performance are the transfer points where the conveyor belt is loaded and discharges. At these transfer points, many of the problems encountered with the conveyor system are created. The problems that arise at the transfer stations include off-center and segregated loading, mistracking, blockages and plugging. And there are a variety of problems originating with fugitive material—cargo released in the form of carryback, spillage, or airborne dust—that are created or exacerbated in the transfer points. These fugitive materials turn into other conveyor-related problems, including shortened component life, unplanned outages for conveyor maintenance, unexpectedly high labor costs for maintenance and cleanup, worker health and safety problems, and issues with community relations. As estimate attributed to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) notes that 85 percent of conveyor maintenance is a result of fugitive material at conveyor transfer points. TECHNOLOGIES TO IMPROVE TRANSFER POINTS A number of techniques to improve the performance of conveyor transfer points have been developed. They include: • Absorbing impact, to prevent damage to belt, belt support systems, and conveyor structure, and reduce spillage caused by the impact energy arising from long material drops or large lumps of material loaded onto the receiving belt. • Stabilizing the belt line, to eliminate sag that allows spillage and encourages material entrapment that can damage the belt. • Protecting the skirtboard seals, by sheltering the sealing strips from the mass of cargo pushing material toward the edges of the belt. • Using self-adjusting, multiple-barrier edge seals, to keep material on the belt by providing long-lived seal efficiency with minimum maintenance requirements. • Controlling and centering the belt’s path, to eliminate belt wander and the spillage and damage it can cause. • Allowing dust to settle, through the incorporation of chutework that provides expanded stilling zone and the use of dust curtains at the points where the belt enters and exits the transfer. • Adding supplemental dust control systems, through the installation of systems for passive dust gathering, water-based dust suppression, and/or active dust collection."

Deregulation, as authorized by the Energy Policy Act of 1992 (PL102-486) allows free-market competition in the electric-utility industry. As the act unfolds, though, uncertainties abound about the type, degree and direction of impacts throughout the affected economy — from fuel suppliers to electricity generators and from power distributors to energy consumers. Instead of having a familiar base of captive customers and electricity prices fixed by negotiation with state public utility commissions, utility companies are preparing for open, free-market competition. They are looking at all areas, including fuel supply, to cut costs to remain competitive. Humorous anecdotes are told about utility companies shunning insiders for senior executive positions. Instead, they are opting for people from the telephone or other industries with deregulation experience. And there are light-hearted stories about a trend away from traditional electric-company names, such as the name of a city or state followed by Edison or Power and Light, to space-age names, such as Ameren, Entergy, Illinova or Unicom. No one wants to be left behind or be perceived to be left behind.

Landusky Mining, Inc. and Zortman Mining, Inc. are two registered Montana Corporations wholly owned by Pegasus Gold, Ltd. of Vancouver, B.C. The Zortman and Landusky Mines are located in the Little Rockies District of central Montana. The Zortman-Landusky mines produced 2,100 kg gold in 1982. A total of 3,250,000 t of ore per year are mined during the period March 1, to September 15, at an average grade of 1.04 gm/t (0.03 oz/t) gold and 13.4 gm/t (0.385 oz/t) silver at a cutoff grade of 0.35 grams of gold/ton (0.01 oz of Au/t) of ore. The stripping ratio during 1983 is anticipated to be 0.75/1 waste to ore. Combined average plant capacity of the two Merrill-Crowe plants is 9,840 lpm (2,600 gpm). The combined heap spray capacity of the two plants approaches 18,900 lpm (5,000 gpm). The mine employs approximately 200 people, about half of these work for the mining companies and the other half for the mining contractor, N. A. Degerstrom of Spokane, Washington. Net profit in 1982 for Zortman and Landusky Mining, Inc. approximated $4,900,000 at an average gold price of $11.40/gm.
