One of the most difficult tasks associated with placer mining is the sampling of the deposit. More placer projects have failed due to inaccurate assessment of the reserves than to any other reason. Within the realm of placers, those containing valuable minerals with a high unit value .are more difficult to sample than those with larger bulk, lower unit value minerals. Some items to consider when sampling a placer deposit are as follows: A) A relatively large size sample is needed for accurate valuation of the ground being tested. Placers are composed of many sizes of gravel which makes a representative sample difficult to obtain. B) When sampling placers for high unit value minerals such as gold, any error in mineral content of the sample will be magnified in the calculation of reserves.

Rigid urethane foam can be used effectively for improving mine air conditioning systems by reducing heat and moisture transfer from mine rock to ventilating air and from mine rock to ventilation ducts, for erecting mine ventilation stoppings and overcasts, for sealings around door frames and bulkheads to prevent air leakage, for preventing spalling and sloughing of roof and rib and for erecting fire-resistant powder magazines and transformer or compression stations. Rigid urethane foam is a tough, cellular material, made by nixing diisocyanate and polyether polyol resin in accurate proportions through an applicator system, then the two chemicals react, the mixture expands thirty times its original volume with 85 to 95 percent closed cells. Within seconds, the mixture solidifies and takes a preset which will adhere to overhead or vertical surfaces. It will adhere to brattice cloth, steel, wood, concrete and rock, Excessive wetness will reduce the adherence, but in such cases adherence can be improved by preliminary application of an absorbent dust such as cement.

This study examined the-feasibility of clay mineral identification and quantification by reflectance radiometry and subsequently developed a computer algorithm for deconvolution of the component spectra. Clay mineral analysis of 53 rocks and soils from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Nevada by X-ray diffraction (XRD) compare favourably with the radiometric determinations. The application of the technique to precious metal exploration was examined at the Horse Canyon epithermal gold deposit, Cortez Mine, Nevada where low levels of illite and kaolinite are present alongside local silicification. Consequent on the success of the laboratory and field work a field portable clay mineral analysis system was designed and constructed.

Benefits of proper control of reagent usage in flotation circuits are typically improved metallurgy and savings in reagent costs. Improved metallurgy can mean more consistent product quality, i.e., final concentrate grade, better recovery of product values from the feed, or higher plant throughput at existing target recovery, and grade values. Flotation performance is sensitive to a variety of process disturbances which occur in operating plants, such as changes in flow rate, percent solids, size distribution. flotability of mineral species, etc. A way to handle these variations is to fully understand the dynamic flotation responses to disturbances and to implement a suitable control strategy to compensate for these disturbances. Depending on the objectives of the control system, various types of control strategies are available which employ different levels of refinement to achieve the desired performance. Typically, variables such as collector and frother dosages and reagent addition points can be manipulated to affect the performance of the circuit. In the case of sulflde mineral flotation, manipulation of the process electrochemical potential, in flotation and in grinding, offers another degree of process control. Because of the complex and interactive nature of flotation process variables, optimized reagent control requires consideration of all, or at least the most important, interactive variables of the flotation circuit. Model- based optimizing control provides a framework to handle the complex and dynamic nature of flotation reagent process control.

Dust-related respiratory disease remains the major health concern in mining, and health agencies are proposing more stringent standards. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) is investigating techniques to continuously monitor respirable dust in real-time during the coal or ore extraction process. Continuous monitoring will allow mine operators to evaluate hazardous dust concentrations and adjust the operations to produce less dust. Mine instrumentation applications include machine-mounted and hand-held monitors, personal monitors, and area/environmental monitors. Six dust detection methods have been considered to meet application requirements. These are: light-scattering instruments, a smoke-particle detection technique, correlation of pressure drop across the collection filter with amount of dust deposited, the Tapered-Element Oscillating Microbalance (TEOM) instrument, a method that relates the amount of dust collected on a filter with the vibration of the filter, and beta attenuation measurement of dust. Studies to date have identified the TEOM instrument and the technique of correlating the amount of dust collected with the vibration ofthe filter as having the most promise for success. Development of the machine-mounted monitor is the highest research priority. The application options and progress to date in developing continuous monitoring instrumentation are presented.

The electrochemical oxidation of chalcopyrite in the absence of-a chemical oxidant was studied in ammonia/ammonium sulfate solutions by anodically polarizing electrodes prepared from massive chalcopyrite. The effects of pH, cupric and ammonia ion concentration were systematically evaluated. Kinetic parameters were obtained from the anodic charge-transfer regions of the anodic polarization curves. Increasing ammonia and hydroxyl ion concentrations increased the rate of oxidation. A mechanism is proposed which explains the first order dependence of (NH3) and (OR) associated with a single electron transfer process. An empirical relationship which accurately describes the dependence of the rest potential (i.e. zero current potential) on solution composition is also given.

Topsoil for revegetation projects is in demand in many urban areas. In this case history, a large aggregate producer manufactured a topsoil from three waste materials. The topsoil was produced in a 200,000 m2 (50-acre) abandoned gravel pit that still had additional gravel under 10 m (30 ft) of overburden uneconomic to strip directly. The topsoil was produced by rotary mixing of sludge, overburden, and a lime admixture; solar drying; and stripping and stockpiling of the product. A major problem was an increase of topsoil drying times for stripping from 40 to over 100 hours when it was rewet by storms. The problem was solved by a research project that evaluated over 50 formulations and over 20 waste materials. . The final formula dried in 15 hours and contained 3-parts sandy mine spoil, 1-part sewage sludge, and 2 % spent-bed, a granular quick-lime produced during power-plant flue-gas desulfurization.

The mining industry continues to be under expanded scrutiny in the health and safety arena, both from federal regulators and the media. While this paper will briefly discuss how enforcement activity, both with citations issued and the size of penalties proposed, the primary focus will be practical suggestions to deal with some key, high-risk areas for a mine operator which could have substantial impact, both in terms of liability and mine operations. It goes without saying that all mine operators need to continue compliance programs they have in place with careful ongoing evaluation of those plans for areas of improvement. The focus here will not be compliance as such, but rather steps to take and procedures to have in place to try to minimize risks in the face of the potential for more significant liability. Thus, our focus will be procedures to respond to unwarrantable failure citations, immediately reportable accidents, and to deal with potential pattern of violation issues.1

Increasing capacity of bulk material handling systems creates difficult problems for accurate in-line material weight measurements. At the same time increasing system complexity and growing user demands call for more measurements. Precision in-line weight measurements for bulk materials are usually accomplished by application of conveyor belt scales. Belt scale accuracies listed by scale vendors are applicable for ideal situations with suitable conveyor design, belt scale location and calibration means. This paper attempts to provide designers and users with simple means to evaluate belt scale accuracy for practical scale installations. Based on known mathematical models simplified formulas for measurement errors are derived and discussed. These formulas allow for simple determination of achievable accuracy for alternative scale installations on the conveyor, conveyor designs, etc.

The two primary goals in underground coal mining are to improve safety and to lower mining costs per ton through increased productivity. However, as evidenced by the drastic decrease in. productivity since the enactment of the 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act, (the Safety Act), these goals appear to be mutually exclusive. Millions of dollars have been spent in the res, arch and development of systems to solve this problem. Before the Safety Act, "productivity had experienced a 25-year history of continued increases ...? (Douglas, 1980). But since its enactment there have been dramatic decreases in productivity accompanied by phenomenal increases in mine costs. Labor trends, depletion of the more readily minable underground coal reserves and other factors have contributed to this situation, but the dominant factor is undoubtedly the Safety Act itself. To illustrate, prior to 1969 underground coal mine production was much greater than surface mine production but since then underground mine production has been declining at a rate greater than the overall growth rate of total coal production.

Low cost, greater operating flexibility, and relatively simple operation are just three of the reasons for using minicomputers in the mining industry. No less than a dozen US manufacturers have sold the new generation of minicomputers to mining operations in the US and the world. Many manufacturers produce several models of minicomputers, each with excellent calculating capabilities. Prices for these "mini-giants" range from about $10,000 for a basic system to over $300,000 for a very powerful, sophisticated system with numerous peripheral devices. While the acceptance of minicomputers by the mining sector has lagged behind their penetration into other businesses, mines with minicomputer capability-especially remote mine sites-have found applications in practically all areas of operations including standard payroll processing, mineral deposit modeling and planning, surveying/mapping, production reporting, and daily production scheduling. In fact, the only limit to the further application of minicomputers in mining is the user's imagination. There are some obstacles to the accelerated use of minicomputers in the mining sector: the limited amount of software available, limited information on site-specific uses, and limited interest in the mining market by manufacturers. The latter is especially significant in light of the fact that many manufacturers queried in a recent telephone survey did not compile statistics on locations of their units in mining. The general consensus is that mining sales represent less than 1% of the total market. Many manufacturers do believe that market dynamics will increase their future research and development for the mining industry. The minicomputer was introduced in 1968, when Digital Equipment Corp. of Maynard, MA, developed a small computing device-the PDP-8 minicomputer. It is important to note that since then, it has become increasingly difficult to precisely define a minicomputer (see box, page 1582). The mini has evolved to surpass the capabilities of many of the large computers (mainframes) of 1968, and some models rival the mainframes of today.

INTRODUCTION Flotation equipment is becoming more definitive in design as well as greater in dimension. The last ten years have witnessed the implementation of large flotation cells ranging in size from 28 to 85 cubic meters. However, small plants still operate with cells as small as 3 cubic meters. These changes have increased the operational sensitivity of the flotation system to the chemical reagents used. No scientific study has been undertaken to develop the relationship between the size of equipment and the response of reagents in the flotation system. Hence, this article is an attempt to present several observations from past experience for the purpose of stimulating future research in an area previously ignored and perhaps subsequently not used to advantage. CONVENTIONAL FLOTATION Recent advances in conventional flotation cell design have been made in two areas: a. Flotation cells are becoming larger, and b. Basic design of flotation cells has changed. They can be classified into two types: deep cell and shallow draft cell. Size and design changes of flotation cells have a greater effect on frother performance than on the performance of other chemical reagents. Hence, the discussion in the following sections is restricted to the impact of frothers in the flotation system. Flotation Cell Size The advent of increasing flotation cell size has resulted in the increase of frother consumption. There appears to be a correlation between reduced horsepower (kilowatt) consumption and increased frother consumption per ton of ore processed in the circuit. This is more prevalent when the frother chemistry remains unchanged. Another reason for increased frother consumption is the increased distance between the rotating central shaft and the lip of the cell for larger flotation machines. Increasing this distance results in increased surface area corresponding to the larger cell size. Reduced power input per ton combined with the need for longer, stronger load support of the froth bubble as a result of increasing cell size has resulted in the development of a new series of stronger and more persistent frothers. By the same token, these newer, stronger frothers are difficult to control when applied to the smaller cells. This is true even at lower dosages because the break point between too much frother and not enough frother for optimum metallurgy is normally very narrow. This problem is often exaggerated when operators have established an optimum setting for pulp level and air for the particular frother in use. Generally, the tendency is to operate the flotation cells simply by adjusting frother dosage. The increase in frother strength to accommodate the large cells often results in the realization, after a retrofit, that the existing pump box or sump which is still handling the same volume of concentrate is no longer adequate in size. Flotation Cell Design The two most common flotation cell designs installed during the past ten years are the deep cell and the shallow draft cell. The deep cell provides for complete mixing of air and pulp at the bottom of the cell. The shallow draft cell does all the mixing/pumping in the bottom haft of the cell whereas the mixing of the air is performed further up the shaft and is brought into contact with the pulp midway up the vortex. There are many preferences for one or the other. It is the author's contention that both designs have very valid concepts and must simply be suited to the particular situation as required by the operator. The following comments are subjective observations which should be explored in greater detail. The deep cell mixes both air and pulp together at the bottom of the cell requiring a full depth ascending of the homogenized air to the surface to form the froth layer. This design, in combination with charged air, provides for good concentrate grade control under adverse conditions of selectivity, especially when faced with a fine grind and a slime-laden gangue. A selective frother can be applied without a competitive loss in recovery. One of the conditions for good selectivity in this environment is operating at medium pulp solids concentration in the range of twenty-six to thirty-four per cent (26-34%). When a higher solids concentration is used in combination with a coarse grind, it becomes difficult to maintain the same recovery with a selective frother due to higher pulp viscosity. This condition sometimes results in an unacceptable coalescence of the air bubbles as they ascend the full height of the deep cell. The increased pulp viscosity at higher solids concentration can also retard the flotation kinetics. The combination of decreased surface area of dispersed air and slower kinetics can result in reduced recovery causing coarse particles to continue to drop

Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is one of the most ubiquitous and versatile minerals found in the earth's crust. Its availability, attractive physical properties and relatively low processing cost make CaCO3 the most widely used filler material today. It is mined in three different forms - chalk, limestone and marble. Each physical form of CaCO3 has different qualities due to differences in postdepositional geology. But the chemical composition remains the same, with CaCO3 an inert component of the finished product. In the past, the paper industry largely left CaCO3 by the wayside, as it cannot withstand the acid-based papermaking process. But conversion to an alkaline system by many US mills changed this picture. Carbonate suppliers have put time and effort into research and development, demolishing barriers and creating new possibilities for what is a simple, natural product. By controlling particle size, size distribution and particle charge, the industry uses ground calcium carbonate (GCC) as a performance enhancer and as an extender for more expensive ingredients. It is estimated that the United States uses 3.6 to 4.1 Mt/a (4 to 4.5 million stpy) of CaCO3. Consolidations and mergers are taking place in the industry. Of the 12 major GCC producers in operation nine years ago, seven are left. Mineral Technology (US) is the dominant precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) producer with more than 50 satellite plants worldwide. Other producers include Georgia Marble (French); Franklin Industries (US); OMYA (Swiss); J.M. Huber (US); ECC (English); and Filler Products (US). Global Stone PenRoc (Canada) is the only newcomer. In addition to this group, there are three small producers left in North America, each with a capacity of less than 100 kt/ a (.110,000 stpy). The trade organization operating as the Pulverized Limestone Division of the National Stone Association renamed itself the Pulverized Mineral Division, to increase its membership pool. The US paper industry is a predominant GCC con¬sumer, using approximately 800 kt/a (882,000 stpy) at an approximate cost of $130/t ($1.43/st). European paper mills pioneered alkaline papermaking. In the early 1960s, they began using GCC as filler and soon thereafter added GCC to their coating formulations. A decade later, the North American paper industry followed suit. The conversion from acid to alkaline paper production benefits the economic and performance aspects of the industry. Less pulp is needed, paper machine maintenance and effluent treatment costs are reduced, and sheet strength, opacity and brightness are increased. Perhaps most important to the reader, the sheet is desensitized to ultraviolet light, extending the paper's archival ability. CaCO3 can provide the papermaker with additional control of his paper. For example, PCC has long supplied the tobacco industry with a means to slow down the burning rate of cigarettes. Due to enhanced performance with regard to bulk and opacity, filler PCC use has risen to 1,500 kt/a (1,650 stpy) in the United States, at an approximate price of $130/t ($143/st). The majority is produced onsite at the paper mill, using "satellite plants." This concept reduces freight cost because only quicklime (CaO) is shipped to the mill, not CaCO3 slurry. The future of CaCO3 is encouraging. The amount of natural ground CaCO3 used is expected to double by the year 2005 to approximately 8 Mt (8.8 million st) worldwide. Acid papermaking practices will feel an increasing pressure to convert to an alkaline process as larger volumes of GCC containing paper enter the recycling market. CaCO3 reserves are plentiful. They will supply the ever growing demand for increasingly sophisticated paper. The plastics industry is supplied with almost 900 kt/ a (990,000 stpy) GCC at an annual growth rate of 4% to 5%. The price of a functional, inorganic filler, surface modified for the plastics industry, has an average selling price of $220/t ($243/st). GCC represents the most common filler, creating a product with higher gloss, better dielectric properties, impact resistance, weatherability and shrinkage control. CaCO3-filled plastics surround us - auto hubcaps and dashboards, shower enclosures, floor tiles, wire coatings, microwave dishes and Tupperware. The caulking and sealant industry is an enormous GCC user, with annual consumption requiring 1.13 Mt (1.2 million st) at about $44/t ($48.50/ st). Caulking and sealant may be highly filled with GCC yet undergo no adverse flow effects, with a narrow particle-size-distribution filler decreasing the binder demand. The CaCO3 industry, as well as the carpet industry, are more or less tied to the growth rates of the construction industry. It is estimated that the carpet industry uses some 680 kt/a (750,000 stpy) of GCC at about $25/t ($27.50/st). The paint industry uses approximately 300 kt/a (331,000 stpy) at a 1 % to 1.5% annual growth rate. Here, too, GCC is the dominant filler. It is used to enhance flow characteristics and color uniformity. It also extends costly titanium dioxide, creates sheen and controls roughness, hardness and tack. More CaCO3 should be used in the future as industry shifts from solvent-free or water-based formulations that can accommodate higher GCC volumes. CaCO3 is not imported or exported in any great quantity. Most areas have reserves of their own and the selling price is relatively low. Even so, quality varies from deposit to deposit. As our needs become morespecific, it remains a challenge to provide varying industries with a fitting product.

The random variable transformation technique was introduced to make probabilistic structural analysis simple for such structures as slopes, dams, foundations, or retaining walls, where two shear strength parameters are required to analyze their stability by deterministic engineering methods. The Gaussian transformation was performed by using the Hermite orthogonal polynomial function. This transforms the experimental histogram into the standard normal distribution, whose mean is zero with a variance of one. Then, the transformed standard Gaussian variable was used for the bivariate normal probability analysis on the structure. The Gaussian transformation technique and the Hermite polynomial functions were chosen because the bivariate joint normal distribution is well-known and easily available for engineers. The binormal probability analysis was made on the probability region of a certain confidence level by superposing the critical line on the same probability region that divides the region into two zones: stable and unstable zones. The critical line was determined from the back calculation of the deterministic engineering method of the structural design. Finally, the probability of structural failure at a desired confidence level was calculated by simply integrating the volume of the binormal density surface above the unstable zone in the probability region. A simple case of slope analysis is introduced to illustrate this probabilistic approach, and its effectiveness and simplicity is demonstrated.

8.1 INTRODUCTION Under room and pillar mining if the extraction ratio is low, (i.e., < 50%) a pillar can support the overburden without collapse and there will be no surface subsidence whatsoever. In other words, if the pillar sizes are properly determined to support the overburden weight, the roof strata cannot cave and there will be no surface subsidence, provided the entry width is small and properly reinforced so that a continuous roof fall leading to piping or the total collapse of the roof does not occur. Under the prevailing mining conditions in the US if only development mining is em¬ployed in room and pillar mining (i.e., no pillar extraction), the extraction ratio is usually less than 50% and generally no surface subsidence will occur. If pillar mining is employed, surface subsidence may occur, depending on the extraction ratio and the size of the remnant pillars (or stumps) left in the gob. The higher the extraction ratio, the smaller the stump pillars left behind in the gob. As the size of the stump pillars becomes smaller, the possibility of their support¬ing the roof without collapse is smaller. If all stumps are crushed completely, the roof will collapse and surface subsidence will occur. Again, whether surface subsidence occurs, it depends on whether the remaining stumps can support the overburden or not. Therefore, since the weight of the overburden which the stump pillars have to support is proportional to the mining depth, a fixed¬size stump pillar can support the overburden at a shallow depth, but will collapse under greater depths. In this context extraction ratio is not the only parameter for determining whether surface subsidence will occur. Furthermore, during pillar mining a pillar can be cut away in many ways to finally reach the same extraction ratio. Therefore, the safest way to determine whether or not sur¬face subsidence will occur in room and pillar mining is to compare the strength of all stump pillars in the panel of interest with the weight of the overburden that the pillars have to support. If they are too small to support the overburden, surface subsidence will occur. Under normal mining practices the characteristics of surface subsidence profiles vary with methods of mining. In the US there are two types of coal mining methods, i.e., longwall and room and pillar mining. Longwall mining is indisputably a total extraction method, but different percentages of coal recovery are achieved in room and pillar mining. Recovery is much higher for sections with pillar extraction than those without pillar extraction. For those without pillar extraction, coal recovery increases with increasing entry width or decreasing pillar size. For those with pillar extrac¬tion, the total coal recovery depends on the amount of coal ex¬tracted from each pillar which is in turn dependent on the roof conditions and methods of pillar extraction. Bauer and Hunt (1981) analyzed the characteristics of the subsidence profiles due to the three types of mining methods in Illinois. Fig. 8.1 shows the range of locations associated with the following profile features: profile edge, maximum tensile curvature, maximum slope, maxi¬mum compressive curvature, and maximum subsidence. The scat¬ter of the data increases with decreasing percentages of extraction. The profile is much sharper for longwall mining and becomes milder as percentage of extraction decreases; for longwall mining the profile edge is always beyond the opening, while in room and pillar mining it may fall within. The location of maximum tensile strain moves outward, while that of the maximum compressive strain moves inward as the percentage of extraction decreases and the maximum subsidence decreases with decreasing extraction ra¬tio. The general concepts discussed in this chapter may not apply to the entry development sections between two longwall panels where roof caving in both panels are very severe and overlap each other. Consequently, it must be treated differently. 8.2 CASE STUDIES Kohli et al. (1982) described several case studies on surface subsidence due to room and pillar mining with pillar extraction. In one case, the seam was 6 ft thick and ranged from 650 to 800 ft deep. The panel was 720 ft wide (Fig. 8.2) and was developed with seven entries. Each entry was 18 ft wide and the pillars were driven at 88 ft center-to-center between entries and crosscuts. Dur¬ing retreating, two additional pillars (pillars J and K) were devel¬oped, two blocks ahead of the pillar line, to take the barrier pillar, 160 ft wide, between panel No. I and No. 2. Pillar extraction began by taking a central slice across the whole panel, beginning from pillar 0 through J. After that, each pillar was sliced by 6 wing-slices, 3 on each side, leaving 4 stumps, 2 on each side. One of each pair was triangular shaped approximately 6 ft wide by 26 ft long. The other was trapezoidal, 26 ft long by 16 ft and 10 ft wide at the upper and lower bases, respectively. This resulted in a total extraction ratio of 85% within the panel. Obviously the stump pillars were not large enough to support the overburden and col¬lapsed completely. The final subsidence profiles were rather smooth, just like those under total extraction (Fig. 8.3). The max¬imum subsidence on Lines A and B was about 3 ft for an average mining height of 6 ft, but the locations of the maximum subsidence were skewed toward panel No. 1. Along Line D, the central por¬tion was flat-bottomed, but the maximum subsidence was only 2 ft, mainly because Line D was only two blocks from the right-side edge. Notice in every profile there was heaving of as much as 0.3 ft, beyond the edges above the solid coal. In another case (Fig. 8.4), the seam was 6 ft thick under 650 to 850 ft cover. Three panels, 710, 400, and 350 ft wide, respec¬tively, were extracted side by side. The entries were 18 ft wide and the pillars at 88 ft center-to-center between entries and crosscuts. Pillar extraction was practiced the same way as described previ¬ously. According to the mine maps, there was no barrier pillar left between the adjacent panels. Thus after extraction the three panels formed a common gob of more than 1460 ft wide. This was re¬flected in the development of the subsidence profile along the county road. After Panel No. I was mined, the maximum subsi¬dence of 1.2 ft occurred at Monument No. 1. This was increased to 1.6 ft after the extraction of Panel No. 2 and went to a further 1.8 ft after the extraction of Panel No. 3. The final maximum subsidence of 4.3 ft occurred at Monuments No. 6 through No. 8, while the remaining portion of the county road showed rebound. However it must be noted that the subsidence profiles were rather bumpy and fluctuated, perhaps an indication of the irregular stump pillars that were left and crushed at various time after mining. The list of environmental issues facing industry in general, and the mining industry in particular, has placed greater emphasis on the concept of risk assessment and risk management. In informal terms, risk can be defined as the chance of injury, loss or damage. More formally, it is defined as the probability of an occurrence and its consequences. In simple terms, risk assessment involves three questions: What can go wrong? How probable is it to go wrong? If it goes wrong, what are the consequences? Experts on the subject of risk assess¬ment and management met in St. Louis, MO in October 1992 to discuss the extensive and innovative technology that has been developed in this arena. Each agreed that a consistent framework can be used to approach risk assessment/ management considerations in siting and design alternatives, as well as when considering financial aspects of mine development. And the environmental planning process for mines, as well as planning for operation through closures, will rely more heavily on risk assessment and management techniques. Risk assessment is a tool to assist engineers, scientists and managers make better, defensible operational decisions. A realistic and probabilistic risk analysis, coupled with a sound financial model, can combine a large set of alternatives and criteria to arrive at a defensible decision. Organizers of this regional SME conference believe that mining professionals should become fully conversant with risk assessment techniques and approaches because this arena provides opportunities to develop more rational decision-making techniques. Current health risk assessments rely heavily on Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approaches. Several speakers and papers show how this approach has been applied to a variety of topics. Two major advantages come forward when applying risk assessment techniques to environmental clean-up options for contaminated sites. They are the selection of practical options and cost-effective alternatives. A probabilistic risk assessment provides results that can be directly related to clean-up costs. It has been shown that small reductions in risk are obtained for large increases in cost after a certain threshold value is reached. A preferred, practical clean-up alternative that provides permanent solutions can be selected based on a probabilistic assessment. Here are summaries of some of the papers presented at the meeting.

This paper presents some techniques and data required to design large ball mills. The advent of larger size mills leads to consideration of the gearless drive as a practical solution to utilize large horsepowwers. The particular shell structure under consideration is subjected to thermal as well as magnetic loads. The magnitude of the inertia, magnetic and shell temperature characteristics have a very significant effect on the design and performance of the hydrodynamic pivoted shoe bearing. Particularly since these bearings have lower frictional resistance properties than hydrostatic trunnion tee rings. The structure of the mill is designed for long life. Parameters involved with the fatigue life of the structure are discussed together with some of the more important aspects of the design.

Mining is one of world&apos;s oldest industries. Its rich history continues into modern times. The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) located in southeastern New Mexico is writing the next chapter in mining history. In fact, WIPP technology is the key to closure of the nuclear cycle with the disposal of nuclear waste in a deep geological repository. It might seem odd that the age-old institution of mining would be linked to the problem of nuclear waste disposal. In fact, the nuclear industry would not exist without mining. Uranium ore is mined from either underground or surface mines as the initial step in harnessing the magnificent resource of nuclear energy.
