Previous testing was performed by researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to improve longwall dust control using underside shield sprays with a longwall directional spray system. This testing provided encouraging results toward respirable dust exposure reductions for longwall personnel, achieving as high as 99% dust reduction at some sampling locations along the longwall personnel walkway. Additional laboratory testing was conducted to test these underside shield sprays in conjunction with a shearer-clearer spray system located on the longwall shearer body. The purpose of this testing was to determine if the underside shield sprays interacted positively or negatively with the shearerclearer sprays. Results from this testing indicate that while the shearerclearer system influences where the respirable dust particles are directed, underside shield sprays can still lower respirable dust exposure for longwall personnel.

INTRODUCTION Pyrite responds to the flotation reagents normally used in sulfide flotation systems. For example, it is well known that xanthates are good collectors for pyrite, and cyanide, sulfide and hydroxides are depressants. The particular response of pyrite to these and other reagents is used to advantage in several areas. By careful control of depressant and collector additions, pyrite can be separated from other sulfides by flotation. This is of obvious importance in base metal sulfide flotation where pyrite depression is often required to produce a marketable grade concentrate. Flotation of pyrite has long been employed in gold ore processing, and it appears that pyrite flotation from coal may become important in the future (1). It is probably a direct consequence of this relative ease of separation, plus the low economic value of pyrite, that detailed investigations on the chemistry of its flotation and depression are relatively limited. Gaudin (2,3,4) and others, in the mid-1950's published data on the flotation of pyrite, but detailed or consistent mechanisms were lacking. In 1955, Sutherland and Wark's book (5) was published, in which a large amount of empirical information, especially earlier work of Wark and Cox, was presented. More recently, in 1968, significant contributions have been made by Fuerstenau et al. (6,7) and Majima and Takeda (El. These papers introduced electrochemical explanations of the effects observed with xanthate and cyanide ions.

The basic principle of this separation method was already defined in the middle of the nineteenth century. However, a change over for the treatment of minerals has followed from the construction of proper machines i.e. airjigs and airtables as late as in the twenties and thirties of this century. The main application of this technology was subsequently found in coal processing and reached quite a great dimension in the two following decades. The number of applications of this method in mineral dressing plants decreased rapidly and has almost vanished in the fifties in favour of wet concentration procedures. It has been for a long period as long as up to the eighties that no more consideration was taken for applying dry gravity separation in the field of mineral processing also due to the successful introduction of flotation. Due to the fact that labour cost was increasing remarkably within the past period after the end of World War II also the economic conditions in the agricultural sector became more though. As a result there came up a great demand for harvesting machines. Since agricultural products can only be processed by dry methods in a prevailing number, highly developed machines were introduced for the dry processing of food and feed stuff.

Newmont Mining Corporation owns and operates the Phoenix Mine near Battle Mountain, Nevada, USA. The existing milling facility has operated since 2006. Following the startup of the milling operation, and coupled with the upswing in the copper market, Newmont realized that Phoenix needed a process option to treat lowgrade transition and oxide copper ores. This meant that potentially revenue generating ore was being mined as waste. With no system in place to treat the transition and oxide copper, work began to determine the most feasible approach. After evaluating multiple options, the flow sheet was set for a run-of-mine (ROM) heap leach pad and solvent extraction/electrowinning plant (L-SX/EW). This paper will discuss the synergies and challenges of developing a copper L-SX/EW plant at the Phoenix copper-gold mill.

Despite two large projects represented in the keynote docket, the mood of the 2011 SME Arizona Conference was summed up best by Ferol Baker, general manager of New Mexico Copper Corp. (a wholly owned subsidiary of Themac Resources Group), ?In the past, it seemed like you couldn?t go to a conference like this without hearing about one big new greenfield project after another. Now what you see is companies doing internal expansion or small-scale brownfield development.? Overall, the tone of this year?s meeting, held at the J.W. Marriott Resort at Starr Pass in Tucson, AZ, was upbeat, yet practical. From the keynote and luncheon addresses to the six panels of sessions, the projects described were positive about the future, yet focused on the details required to make those projects come to fruition.

NTRODUCTION Surface subsidence monitoring is the most effective means for investigating the nature of, and developing the techniques for pre¬dicting the surface movement and deformation process. However, because of imperfection in survey equipment and field practices, the surface movement data collected from field survey are not error-free. Also due to lack of proper numerical techniques for computing surface deformation from the measured surface move¬ment data, a relatively large portion of the subsidence data col¬lected could not provide information other than surface movement. In a paper by Luo and Peng (1992), the sources and magnitude of errors in the measured surface movements using an electronic total station in subsidence survey are discussed. If the errors in the measured surface movement components are left untreated before calculation for deformation indices (i.e., slope, strain and curva¬ture), the errors will be carried over to the deformation indices and enlarged if improper numerical procedures are used in the calcu¬lation. It should be noticed that in protecting structures affected by ground subsidence, accurate surface deformation indices are much more important than surface movement. In order to improve the accuracy of the collected surface movement data and the calcu¬lated deformation indices, a number of numerical procedures are also proposed in the same paper. The proposed techniques include: a data smoothing technique for data pre-processing; and a number of numerical methods and/or procedures for calculating surface deformation indices from the measured surface movement data. DATA SMOOTHING Because of various factors, the measured surface movement data always contain errors, small or large. In order to better utilize the collected data, a data smoothing method is proposed to correct the errors in the measured movement data. The method uses the same concept as the influence function method (e.g., Knothe, 1957) on which many existing subsidence prediction methods are based. The data smoothing method makes necessary corrections on the measured movement for the point of interest according to not only the measured movement at this point but also those at the surrounding points. The contribution of a surrounding point in making the correction for the point of interest is inversely propor¬tional, in exponential form, to the distance between them. Kennecott Copper Corporation's Chino Mines Division concentrator is located in Hurley, New Mexico. Construction of the concentrator was started in 1910 and its capacity was progressively increased over the years to the present nominal 20, 425 t/d of ore (22, 500 stpd). The principal copper minerals present in the ore are chalcopyrite and chalcocite with much of the chalcotite intimately associated with pyrite. Lime is used to depress pyrite, and flotation at a high pH or alkalinity is required for optimum recovery of chalcocite with good rejection of the pyrite. Regrinding is also required to liberate chalcocite-pyrite middling grains. Accurate control of the lime addition is necessary to obtain both optimum metallurgy and minimum lime usage. At low pH levels, flotation cell control is difficult due to excess froth, but excessively high pH levels can go unnoticed because froth characteristics do not change from those experienced at the deisred pH. With manual control of the lime addition, the desired pH can be exceeded for periods of up to two hours. In 1972 a major renovation of the flotation and regrinding circuits was com¬pleted and at that time a new lime distribution and control system was placed in operation. Limestone is obtained from a nearby quarry west of Hurley. The limestone is crushed, sized and fed to a rotary kiln and the quicklime product is stored prior to slaking. The lime is slaked, as required, in a mixing tank-classifier type slaker and the lime slurry is pumped to a concentrator storage tank from which it is distributed through a conventional closed loop system. The current average lime usage rate is approximately 6 kg/t of ore (12 lb per st).

I have been following the discussions on coal degradation started by the article "Degradation process in coal slurry pipe-lines," by M.G. Ayat and B.C. Scott. I agree with Mr. Dasher's comments in January that the title of the article was perhaps misleading as the information appeared to pertain more to processing the coal than to transportation. Specifically, the authors' conclude that the cyclone had an important impact on the degradation. Dr. Ferri's comments on degradation in other physical processes was very correct, handling of coal in a turbulent manner has an impact on the size distribution of the coal. This is one reason that when I design a coal system (mine to rail car) I try to minimize the total number of transfer and processing steps consistent with achieving the desired product specifications. Another area, mentioned in passing in the article, the impact of natural causes and the mining step, is of particular interest to me. A mine in West Virginia had a variation of 50% in the -6.35 mm (-0.25 in.) raw coal depending upon the direction of mining. Since it was a single unit mine, this significantly impacted the final product. Two articles on mining's impact on size distribution are: • Stefanko, R., Chopra, I. K., and Ramani, R. V., 1974, "Mining influence on size consistency and washability char¬acteristics of coal," SME Fall Meeting. September; and • Albrecht, M., and Olsen, D., 1980, "Mining methods impact on coal preparation plant design." 1st International Mine Planning and Development Symposium. September. Both articles presented information on variation of size distribution and cleaning plant performance on a coal depending on the mining method used. Both articles considered a single coal seam at one mining operation. Stefanko's article considered continuous and conventional mining of coal in Pennsylvania. Albrecht's article considered surface, underground continuous, and underground hydraulic mining of a coal in British Columbia. Both concluded that mining methods do impact coal characteristics. I agree with Mr. Ayat's comments in reply to Dr. Ferri's discussion, "... degradation is a multi-faceted phenomenon involving many natural and man-made factors." As efforts are being made to produce a higher quality (lower sulfur) coal, this topic becomes even more important

The increasing popularity of alternative methods in delivery of underground infrastructure projects has given rise to innovative and collaborative contracting strategies to allocate and manage the unique risks associated with the work. This paper presents approaches and recent examples of how risk has been dealt with using various alternative delivery methods, including Progressive Design Build (PDB) and Construction Manager/General Contractor (CM/GC). Based on the experience gained from these examples, recommendations for an innovative and collaborative risk baselining approach using contingency sharing are presented that should advance the overall goals of equitable risk sharing and compensation.

Investigations in the Ortiz Mountains have revealed the relationship of igneous activity and gold mineralization to the Tijeras-Canoncito Fault System (TCFS). The northeast-trending TCFS passes through the southeastern part of the Ortiz Mountains where its principal structure is the asymmetric Ortiz Graben. Several fault blocks, containing up to 305 m (1000 ft ) of Eocene Galisteo Formation, comprise the graben that has up to 1220 and 610 m (4000 and 2000 ft) of stratigraphic separation on its southeast and northwest sides, respectively. Intrusions in the Ortiz Mountains can be subdivided into two petrochemical types: an older calcalkaline suite and a younger alkaline suite. The calc-alkaline rocks are characterized by extensive sill, dike, and laccolithic bodies of latite-andesite intrusives and at least one younger (?) granodiorite stock at Candelaria Mountain. The alkaline rocks consist of a large nepheline-bearing augite-monzonite stock, a latite-porphyry hypabyssal plug, the Ortiz diatreme (vent breccia), and trachytic-latite dikes radial to the diatreme. K-Ar age determinations suggest the older suite to be 34 +/-2.2 million years while the younger alkaline rocks range from about 30 to 26 million years. Gold mineralization in the Ortiz Mountains occurs in five distinct environments: brecciapipes, skarns, veins, porphyry-like stockworks, and placers. Lode mineralization is associated with the alkaline suite of intrusive rocks postdating the Ortiz diatreme and predating most of the trachytic-latite radial dikes.

Three dimensional surface approximations are important means of evaluating physical and environmental factors that affect surface coal mining and reclamation. Computer approximated surfaces are projected as an array of square grid cells where individual cells define each parameter value respective to locations on the grid. Grid surfaces or grid cells within a surface can be compared or modified through application of standard mathematical functions. Surface approximations can be used to define the quantity and quality of marketable coal and to evaluate thickness and quality of overburden. Surface approximations also can be used to evaluate overburden swell factors wherein changes in post-mine topographic relief are related to expansion of unconsolidated materials in the backfill. Application of computer approximated surface to analysis of approximate original contour (AOC) standards allows an assessment of the quantity and geographical displacement of overburden and the distribution and numerical level of slope.

The requirements of metals by modern society have created big challenges for mining engineers minerals processing engineers, metallurgical engineers and economists to produce these metals economically from mineral deposits which contain, with time, less and less value. The advances of science and technology allow, today, the exploitation of mineral deposits which only few years ago would not have been considered economical. However, there are limitations both on the minimum grade of recoverable values contained in the ore to be fed to a mill or on the concentrate to be smelted, and on the maximum content of "impurities" i.e. chemical elements which are difficult or expensive to refine from the ore, from the concentrate or from the metal. It is also known that the cost of treatment in a mill or in a smelter, for unit of metal contained in the ore or in the concentrate, increases as the grade of the recoverable values contained in them decreases and also if the content of impurities increases. On March 15, 2012, about 24 attendees from several western states attended Roundtable 2012, hosted by Knight Piésold and Co. at the Red Lion Hotel and Casino in Elko, NV. The focus of this year?s discussion was ?Acid Rock Drainage for Engineers and Environmental Scientists.? Other names may have been more suitable for the event, perhaps combining geochemistry, with air and water quality and their long-term effects on soil and rock mechanics. Bryan Ulrich (senior vice president, Knight Piésold?s Nevada operations) and Steve Lange (senior geochemist, Knight Piésold, Denver, CO), helped facilitate the discussion. Attendees included personnel from a dozen mining properties, various corporate offices and academia. There were also attendees from a geochemical testing laboratory to help respond to specific questions pertaining to testing protocol and procedures.

A multimine mineral value chain (MVC) consists of multiple mines in the upstream supplying raw materials to multiple destinations in the downstream. The short-term mine production scheduling problem of a multimine MVC aims to determine the optimal extraction sequence and destination allocation of blocks from all the mines collaboratively to meet the quality and quantity requirements of all the processing plants in each period, subject to all relevant technical and operational constraints of the mining system. It is carried out at shorter scales of days/weeks/months under the purview of long-term production scheduling. An optimal short-term production schedule for MVC involving multiple mines that share the same infrastructure (processing units, stockpiles and waste dumps) requires coordination across the network of mines. Optimizing the short-term production schedules independently at each mine fails to capture the benefit of collaboratively generating schedules for all the mines, resulting in suboptimal schedules. Additionally, in short-term production scheduling, the operations are modeled in greater detail with additional decision variables and constraints to model the more complex multimine MVC situations. This makes the large-scale instances of the problem computationally intractable for standard mixed-integer programming (MIP) solvers. This work presents a customized genetic algorithm (GA)-based heuristic approach to obtain near-optimal solutions to the industrial-scale instances of the short-term production scheduling problem of multimine MVC within a reasonable computation time.

The fossil resins of certain western coals are of significance and of sufficient value as a chemical commodity to justify a fossil resin industry. At the present time these valuable fossil resin resources, worth more than $0.50/lb as a chemical commodity, are being burned as fuel for electric power generation. This waste of our fossil resin resources corresponds to a loss in revenue of $200 million per year -equivalent to the value of the coal itself! Improved process technology for the recovery of fossil resin is under development and includes selective flotation of fossil resin from fine coal streams and solvent refining of the fossil resin flotation concentrate to produce a premium resin product. The most recent developments in process technologies are discussed with respect to separation efficiency and product quality. It is clear that the development of a fossil resin industry should not be limited by process technology.

A mixed-integer formulation of the mine scheduling problem is discussed and applied for the purpose of optimizing both the mine production sequencing and the mill blending and processing problems simultaneously. Previous attempts at solving these problems separately, although successful, fail to take into account the interrelationships between these problems. Project structure serves as the outline of this paper, which is directed towards a mining engineering audience. Generalized in its organization, this concept is useful for long, intermediate and short range scheduling. Actual applications are mentioned which show that the concept is also applicable to mining a variety of ores.

Naumannite (Ag,Se), a silver selenide mineral, was first discovered in 1828. This study investigates the structure, morphology, chemical composition, and leaching kinetics of naumannite. Mechanical activation in a planetary ball mill increased its specific surface area, enhancing the leaching rate of silver in nitric acid (HNO3). The study found that mechanical activation significantly improves silver recovery.

A 25-mm diameter dense-medium cyclone was tested to investigate the effects of geometry and operating conditions on cyclone performance when processing -150 I'm coal. The emphasis was on examining those variables (e.g., flow rate and inlet velocity) which impact the separation kinetics (specifically the number of g's and the mean retention time) and the occurrence of apparent bypass. Apparent bypass, indicated by partition curve "tails", results from the short circuiting of the feed coal to one or both of the product streams and represents a loss and/or contamination of the clean coal. This paper presents the results for this series of tests.

One way to upgrade iron ore is to process it into pellets. The pelletizing process is multifaceted, involving complex fluid dynamics with highly turbulent, high-temperature flow in intricate geometries. This makes it hard to perform measurements during operation, so a useful tool for better process understanding is computational fluid dynamics (CFD), where the challenge is to perform efficient and trustful simulations of complicated problems. A validated simulation model can be valuable for increased process control and development. In this paper, the flow field and coal combustion process in a pilot-scale iron-ore pelletizing kiln is simulated using a CFD model. The objective of this work is to apply a coal combustion model to enable an investigation of thermal effects from the flame on the surrounding flow field.
