The transportation of mine products incurs a cost which can have a significant bearing on the competitive position of the manufactured product. Clearly, the engineer who is responsible for selecting a mode of transport must base his decision, at least in large measure, on economic comparisons. And today, the engineer usually finds that he has to choose between several modes, including slurry pipelines. For the purpose of an initial economic screening, it is not necessary to go deeply into the technical details of a slurry system. What is usually needed, however, is a method with which the engineer can make a quick economic assessment to determine whether a slurry pipeline should be included in the detailed final analysis. This paper presents a rapid method for making such a preliminary appraisal. Experience with commercial slurry pipeline systems in several countries and with a variety of solid materials has shown that if several assumptions pertaining to critical design variables are made, it is possible to roughly estimate the transportation cost of a slurry system on the basis of only three factors: the specific gravity of the solid material, the length of the system, and the quantity of slurry to be pumped each year. It is assumed that conditions pertaining to field construction, corrosion inhibition, and the like, will be favorable. This assumption is critical because any factor which analysis shows to be particularly unfavorable will raise the total transportation cost estimate which this paper establishes. If the engineer employs this estimating procedure and decides that the use of a slurry pipeline is economically unattractive, his chances of being wrong are small. Conversely, if his quick appraisal indicates that the use of a slurry system is economically favorable, the engineer is justified in committing the time and money needed to make a more detailed investigation of the slurry pipeline potential.

The paper presents the evaluation method of the thermal power potential of the salt lakes developed in collapsed salt mines in Romania. It is well-known that the hydro-chemical stratification of these lakes favors warmer internal layers. The degree of heat varies during the year, but, taking into account the large number of genetic lakes of this type, it can be used as a local utilizable power source. The authors analyze the correlations between the physico-chemical parameters of the water and the degree of heat stored as a function of the morphological parameters of the lakes, as well as the technical parameters for capitalizing on this power.

In comparison to many mineral commodities, barite has a low unit value. It is mined and sold in low volumes in high-grade (90-98% BaSO4) forms to basically one industry that uses approximately 75% of the free world production. Based upon the above criteria, all factors must be considered in determining if a barite deposit is economical; such as, the type of deposit, mining and milling methods required, transportation to the markets, tariffs, local political conditions, etc. In other words, barite mines are made--not found. The length of this paper precludes any indepth discussion of geology, mining and metallurgy of barite. Most of this information can be found in data already published, such as D. A. Brobst's bulletin1 on the Barite Resources of the United States.

In many papers concerned with fundamentals of the froth flotation process, authors have considered the contents of a flotation cell to be comprised of two immiscible phases, the froth and the pulp. I (Of course, each of these phases is in turn made up of several solid phases plus air and water.) This generalized concept of the flotation system can be extended by considering the cell contents to include two phases: an extracting phase, the air bubbles plus the collector, which removes a selected mineral component from the second phase, the ore pulp. Thus, there is an analogy between a flotation system on the one hand, and chemical extracting systems, such a solvent extraction system or a leaching system, on the other hand. Such extracting systems may be operated in cocurrent or countercurrent fashion. This paper includes first a brief discussion on the general nature of cocurrent and countercurrent operation as applied to froth flotation, and then presents the experimental results of flotation of a specular hematite ore by each method, using a tall oil fatty acid as collector. Cocurrent Flotation A conventional flotation circuit involving roughing, scavenging, and cleaning flotation is illustrated schematically in Figure 1. In such a circuit the col¬lector, or extractant, and new feed ore enter together at the head of the rougher circuit, and flow cocurrently to the scavenger circuit where more collector is added. According to this practice, sufficient collector is added to the head of the rougher (and scavenger) so that the final tailings are of low enough grade to be discarded. Since the flow of collector and ore is cocurrent, the process consists of single stage contact between the extracting phase and the ore pulp. If the scavenger concentrate is recycled to the head of rougher, the overall circuit has some of the characteristics of countercurrent flow. "INTRODUCTION High sulfate (SO4-2) levels often occur in MIW (mining influenced water) either as the result of oxidation of sulfide minerals exposed by mining activity or by deliberate addition – commonly by sulfuric acid (H2SO4) use in hydrometallurgical leaching activities. Increasing regulation of sulfate discharge is creating new pressure to treat or mitigate sulfate release to prevent its entry into the environment. Current treatments include precipitating as gypsum during lime treatment, filtration separation using membranes such as reverse osmosis and nanofiltration technology, and biological elimination via methods like constructed bioreactors. Blue Planet Strategies (BPS) focuses on improved resource utilization targeting electrolytic treatment and waste conversion into resources and has now demonstrated that its proprietary DEMET™ (Dynamic Electrolytic Metal Effluent Treatment) platform can also remove sulfate from target streams as a byproduct of its usual primary treatment focus points of metal species elimination and/or pH adjustment.[1-6] This powerful new capability can mitigate sulfate contamination and recover the sulfate in a useful and potentially saleable form as a byproduct of improved primary treatments focused on enhancing production or treating waste. This provides a new treatment opportunity and value proposition for lowering overall sulfate consumption/addition or creating new revenue to defray conventional treatment costs. The DEMET Alternative DEMET utilizes a patented electrolytic technology platform employing proprietary dynamic high surface area electrodes in innovative configurations to achieve a variety of novel selective chemistries. DEMET‘s unique elements can yield higher processing rates at practical efficiencies, lower energy consumption, plus improved processing stability and lower maintenance requirements due to enhanced resistance to cell fouling and shorting; while also thwarting cross stream (catholyte vs. anolyte) contamination. Consequently, DEMET can provide a superior, extremely versatile, and cost-effective electrolytic treatment option where a multitude of FEED and PRODUCT stream combinations might be employed in comparison to traditional tankhouse electrolytic cells. Secondary reactions (Figure 1A) which could also occur at the cathode (plating/electrowinning, precipitation/scale formation, etc.) are controlled through process tailoring and operation parameter selection. Additionally, DEMET‘s innovative dynamic system mitigates potential fouling and electrode occlusion or shorting challenges which could occur when process particulars demand some of these secondary side reactions occur."

Most primary-molybdenite producers use a selective-flotation process in which molybdenite is floated from the ore while other sulfide and non-sulfide gangue minerals are depressed in the same step (Figure 1). The process was developed at the Climax mill. Reagents used in the rougher-flotation stage include vapor oil (collector), syntex (surfactant), pine oil (frother) and occasionally sodium cyanide and Nokes reagent (depressant). Rougher concentrate is upgraded by cleaner flotation to produce market-grade molybdenite concentrates. Reagents used in the cleaner flotation stage are Dowfroth 250, vapor oil, sodium cyanide and Nokes reagent. The development of the flotation reagent scheme at Climax and the role of the reagents have been well described by Born, et al, (1976) and Malhotra, et al, (1976, 1977a, 1977b, 1977c, 1980). The hydrocarbon collector, vapor oil, accounts for approximately 50 percent of the total molybdenite-flotation reagent cost. Because vapor oil sources are limited, and the cost of vapor oil has increased significantly over the last decade, several studies have been done to evaluate alternate oil-based collectors and/or blends of collectors which would produce similar metallurgical results at a reduced cost, or increase the overall molybdenite recovery at the same cost (Smit and Bhasin, 1983; Hahn, 1969; Smith and Bhappu, 1971). The approach taken in the present study was to evaluate alternate non-oil based collectors and collector systems that are less expensive than vapor oil.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating a systems approach to metals recovery from leach liquors produced by in situ leach mining techniques. A successful in situ leaching process requires a thorough under-standing of the complex interrelationships that exist between leaching chemistry and metals recovery. Laboratory research is addressing these interrelationships in the solution mining of a copper oxide deposit. Laboratory tests have been conducted to gather baseline data related to the design and operation of continuous leaching-solvent extraction-electrowinning circuits. This paper addresses the findings of the baseline studies. Specific results include the characterization of simulated in situ leach liquors produced by leaching chrysocolla and chrysocolla-atacamite-bearing copper ores. Metal recovery procedures, utilizing four commercial solvent extraction reagents, are also characterized, and potentially troublesome leach liquor contaminants that may complicate waste management procedures are identified.

It is generally accepted that sulfur exists in coal in three forms: (1) pyritic, (2) organic, and (3) sulfate sulfur. Sulfate sulfur usually makes up less than 1% of the total sulfur content. Pyritic and organic sulfur, make up almost all of the total sulfur and occur in varying amounts in different coals and can vary greatly in coal of the same seam Pyritic sulfurs of 20% to 80% of the total sulfur have been reported Other authors have shown that it is not possible to remove the organic sulfur without chemically altering the coal. Chapman and Jones (1) state: "Organic sulfur, unlike pyritic sulfur does not exist as discrete particles, but is intimately associated with the coal structure, and as such it is not possible to remove it or reduce its concentration by physical means." Any success in removing sulfur has come about by removing pyritic sulfur by physical means; therefore, removal of sulfur in the pyritic form is the subject of this investigation. The extent to which any impurities can be removed from a particular coal can be determined by a washability study. Outside of crushing coal, to finer sizes or chemically altering the coal, there are no known methods of changing this inherent washability characteristic. The efficiency of various methods used to remove impurities can be determined by comparison of results produced at a yield to the results as shown by a washability study. In recent years heavy media processes have proven their ability to wash plus 28 mesh coal and nearly produce results shown to be theoretically possible by the washability study. Therefore, it is the objective of this paper to show various methods of treating the finer fractions of the coal, in the hope of developing a process, which can effectively produce in the fine fractions the efficiency of heavy media devices in the coarse.

During dusk, nighttime and dawn operations, effective illumination is a crucial component of safety for getting on/off mobile surface mining equipment and for preshift inspections. U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers examined whether illuminance levels could be improved for ingress/egress systems and preshift walkaround inspections of equipment using light-emitting diode (LED) area luminaires. Illumination and glare were key metrics evaluated. Although headlamps provided adequate illumination, LED area luminaires illuminated a much broader area compared to the narrow spot lighting of the headlamp. Hence, the use of additional area luminaires can increase slip-trip-fall (STF) hazard awareness and detection. Furthermore, a commercially available luminaire demonstrated better results than a custom LED luminaire relative to discomfort and disability glare.

Mine land reclamation is a comparatively new science-Although some mining companies point with pride to reclamation efforts of 20 to 30 years ago these were the exception rather than the rule. In the last ten years the skyrocket of environmental awareness has been awesome to behold. Future shock gripped mine operators everywhere as they struggled to cope with rapidly changing and escalating demands. The initial result was that two divergent points of view became dominant. Environmentalists said, "Put it back the way it was," and the miners responded, "Let's grow some weeds and hide it." These views are not surprising as they represent rather obvious alternative responses, albeit at opposite ends of the decision spectrum. The former case has prevailed more often than the latter, as most state and federal legislation -- both proposed and passed -- has required drastic alteration of the post-mining landscape so that evidence of prior mining is largely obliterated. An exception to this has been in porphyry copper country where the infrequent abandonment of mines has given emphasis to the second philosophy -establishing vegetative cover on mine waste materials. Now, it should come as no revelation to most mining people that both of these approaches to mine reclamation suffer from serious drawbacks when applied to open pit copper mines. First, whereas waste dumps and tailings dams can be vegetated with some aesthetic benefit, the massive presence of copper mining operations remains very prominent. It is difficult to conceal an open pit copper mine. Second, returning open pit copper mines lands to their original topography and productivity is simply not a reasonable alternative.

Due to the remote locations of the mining projects and the demand for long transmission lines to provide electrical power, mining sites often operate with poor network power quality and low short circuit capacity. In order to cope up with this situation, more and more mining projects are considering the installation of appropriately designed Synchronous Condensers(SC) together with Power Factor Correction and Harmonic Filter System(PFC&HFS). The installation of these power quality equipments is viewed as a technological advancement in the mining application. An adequate level of short circuit power is essential and has to be ensured for the safe and reliable operation of especially large cycloconverter driven gearless mill drive systems used for grinding application. Increase in plant short circuit power is generally achieved by lowering the impedance of the supplying network. The SC also provides smooth voltage control during mill starting or major load trips, thereby regulating the plant voltage within the required limits. This paper will explore the impact, technical advantage and reasoning for the selection of the advanced hybrid technology mentioned above, in order to cope with the power system challenges for future mining projects. It also highlights the potential problems and how to address them carefully.

Cortez Gold Mines, the United States' third largest primary producer of gold, commenced continuous operations on January 10, 1969. The decision to proceed to production was made in March of 1968 and construction of the mill and stripping operations for the pit began in April and July, respectively. Anomalous conditions on the slope of Mt. Tenabo along the Roberts Mountain thrust fault zone were discovered by the U.S.G.S. while conducting geochemical surveys in the old Cortez silver district. Following the discovery of gold an intensive program of drilling was organized. Drilling outlined an orebody with 3.5 million tons of ore averaging 0.28 ounces of gold per ton. It was on the basis of this reserve that a 1700 t. p.d. cyanide plant was designed. Needless to say, with such a limited ore reserve, economies in design and construction would have to be observed. Cortez Gold Mines is a joint venture with American Exploration & Mining Co., The Bunker Hill Company, Vernon F. Taylor, Jr., and Webb Resources, Inc. , as partners. Political issues and a glaring infrastructure deficiency have retarded the emergence of a strong mining component to the Alaskan economy in recent years. Barriers to orderly mineral development are slowly being removed attendant upon changing political circumstances. Infrastructure development, as an investment avenue as well as a responsibility of the State, is receiving much greater attention than in the past. Alaska of course has a rich and varied mining history going back to the 19th Century. This paper, however, focuses on the mining potential, not the mining heritage of the 49th State. The mining industry is emerging from a nadir in the economic cycle - times during which it was buffeted by unsympathetic administrations and confused and confounded by the protracted land status- conflicts prior to enactment; of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) and other milestone legislation. Today Alaska's mining industry looks toward a bright and healthy future and, in the process, will become a very important and vital component of the State and national economy.

Large reserves of high calcium limestone have been outlined in the Redwall formation at Nelson, Arizona. Geologic mapping, core drilling and shallow seismic refraction studies have outlined more than 100 million tons of high quality, chemical and metallurgical grade limestone in the Mooney Falls member of the Mississippian Redwall Limestone. Well developed Karst zones in the Redwall were delineated by field mapping, seismic profiling and core drilling. Development of large reserves of high quality, thick beds of limestone near the present mine and rail facilities was the basis for the current mine and plant expansion. When completed in 1978 the planned 1800 Tpd production will represent the largest lime operation in the Western United States.

"INTRODUCTION The so called Porto Maravilha Project consists of the re-urbanization of a 500 ha area in the Rio de Janeiro port region. Several changes in local infrastructure are being implemented, including a significant change in the road system, with the demolition of the former “Via Perimetral” viaduct and construction of 4 new tunnels: • Saúde tunnel - 35 m long (Waimberg et al, 2014); • “Binária tunnel” - 1012 m long; • “Via Expressa” twin tunnels - 1850 m long each way. The tunnels were excavated almost completely in rock using conventional drill and blast methodology and only some short stretches in weathered rock, associated to faults zones, residual soils and marine sediments close to the tunnel portals. During excavation of access shaft and “Via Expressa” and “Binária” tunnels significant ground settlements as well as settlements of buildings founded both on shallow and deep foundations were measured. These values could not be associated to conventional tunneling induced settlement troughs. This paper focuses on the “Via Expressa” tunnels, presenting a brief description of the project as a whole, its geological and geotechnical background, monitoring results, and a discussion of possible causes of the measured settlements. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Porto Maravilha Project is an integrated multidisciplinary action on behalf of the Rio de Janeiro city council with support from the State and Federal Governments. In addition to creating new conditions for working, housing, transport, culture and leisure for the resident population, it also promotes expressive economic development in the region (Portonovo, 2015). Porto Maravilha Project is carrying out actions for the recovery of the region’s historical heritage, as well as promoting the population´s social and economic development. One of the main benefits of the Porto Maravilha Project is the construction of the new traffic system in the port area, consisting of the Express and Binário roadways. The new project, which will replace the current Perimetral Rodrigues Alves viaduct system, will increase traffic flow capacity by 27%."

Capstone Copper’s Pinto Valley Mine faced challenges in recovering rock and ore on final walls because of geotechnical constraints that require restrictions on methods for loading blastholes adjacent to the pit boundaries to preserve wall stability. The operation had been using the same drill and blast designs for years. With changing geology, such as harder rock, as mining progressed, material was being left unmined in final walls because of poor breakage. The amount of unrecovered, unprocessed ore was estimated at approximately 380,000 tons a year generated from an average of 60 final wall blasts performed annually. The engineering team from Capstone and Dyno Nobel engaged to minimize the amount of material left on the final pit walls. This paper presents how we collected data, reviewed design standards, and found opportunities to improve ore recovery from pit final walls without increasing drilling and blasting costs. The results collected from implementing the new design on two benches showed the potential for extra revenue of approximately $3.6 million generated annually from reducing final wall unrecoverable underbreak by nearly 71% on the mine’s highwalls.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the use of geophysical methods to determine rock mass characteristics, particularly rock quality, lithology, and fracture parameters that are important for determining the feasibility of in situ leaching operations. As part of this research, two Bureau-developed crosshole geophysical systems are described that can be used for site investigation and rock mass characterization. Results are given for performance tests at field sites in Arizona and Texas and for correlations between the crosshole seismic data with fracture frequency, rock quality, and lithologic variation. Recommendations are made for using elastic waveform propagation characteristics and dynamic elastic properties for improving rock mass characterization in the geomechanical assessment of in situ leaching deposits.

Seeking to implement the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management to improve the safety of their tailings facilities across the globe, mining companies are motivated to invest in new technologies to recover valuable minerals from tailings. One solution being evaluated is the use of magnetic separators to concentrate ultrafine tailings. However, this approach is energy intensive as it requires high magnetic fields to recover ultrafines, and usually results in low mass yields. Additives that modify pulp rheology and surface properties, or selective flocculate ultrafine particles, were tested to enhance the performance of magnetic separation. Promising results in laboratory scale testing different types of additives confirmed that it is possible to increase the mass yield, keeping the selectivity of this stage.

The Underground Research Laboratory (URL) , a major geotechnical research facility, is currently being developed by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) , 120 km northeast of Winnipeg, Manitoba. The URL is part of the Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program, which is assessing the concept of nuclear fuel waste disposal in a vault deep in stable plutonic rock of the Canadian Shield (Simmons, 1986). Comprehensive geotechnical research and development activities are being carried out in conjunction with excavation? and construction of the underground facilities.
