A blast furnace test of approximately 5,000 tons of PelleTech Corporation (PTC) cold bond pellets was successfully run at Kaiser Steel Corporation (Kaiser) Steel Manufacturing Division at Fontana, California. The pellets were produced from mill scale, BOF dust and blast furnace flue dust. A 15 day base period, during which time the metallic burden was 2/3 heat indurated pellets and 1/3 sinter, preceeded the test. During the test period the metallic bur- den was 10% cold bond pellets, 56.7% heat indurated pellets and 33.3% sinter. A 15 day post test base period followed during which the PTC pellets were replaced by conventional pellets. The pellets were produced in the 3.C Semi-works Facility located on Kaiser property. The facility incorporates the Michigan Technological University Hydro-Thermal Agglomerating Process.

Although the role of the collector has long been thought to play a predominant role in coal flotation, recent investigations by the authors show that the frother plays an equally important role. These investigations have included extensive testwork in several coal preparation plants and in the laboratory. The factors which were investigated include the absolute level of collector and frother addition, the ratio of frother to collector additions, the type of frother, and the particle size distribution of the feed. Results from this testwork reveal strong interactions between these factors as well as the necessity of considering these factors in order to optimize the reagent regime.

Introduction A major uncertainty in assessing the potential for heap-and dump-leach projects is how to determine the extraction-rate curve for the recovery of the mineral values from coarse ore. Such material could either be run-of-mine (ROM) or primary crushed ore. The problem with field testing coarse ore, especially for new projects, is the large scale and extended leach times needed to accurately determine the final extraction-rate curve. At least 5 x 103 to 5 x 104 t of representative ROM ore are typically required for a copper test heap, and much more is often used. Kennecott, for example, recently constructed a 0.9 Mt (1 million st) ROM test heap at the Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah. In such coarse ore operations, the ultimate level of extraction will require a leach cycle that can extend from several months to a few years. Quite often, project development schedules do not provide the luxury of mining such large quantities of material or running such long tests. Instead, test data are usually limited to results from column leach studies on relatively fine ore, often with a top size that does not exceed 25 mm. Maximum leach times are also short, typically less than a year before an initial decision is needed on project viability. Proposed method One approach to estimating the recovery from a coarse ore leach is to assume that the leach solution will have some ultimate penetration distance into the rock. Then, the final level of mineral extraction in this "leached rim" will equal the ultimate level of extraction identified in various testing programs. Obviously, if the radius of a given rock fragment is less than the penetration distance, that fragment will be fully leached at the end of the operation. With larger rock sizes, the percent recovery will fall off as the size increases and the fraction of unpenetrated rock mass increases. Such an approach sounds simple but is likely to be complex when applied to a real project. For example, the penetration distance will be a function of both the rock characteristics and the effective length of the leach cycle. The important rock characteristics include rock porosity, the degree of internal fracturing and the mode of mineral occurrence. With regard to the latter, penetration is likely to be greater if the leachable mineralization occurs on fracture surfaces or in veinlets, as opposed to fine grains uniformly disseminated throughout the rock mass. An estimate of penetration distance may be derived from column or heap tests by noting the depth of solution penetration into the larger rock fragments after three, six and 12 months of leaching. While the penetration rate is ore specific, something on the order of 10 to 20 mm/y may be appropriate for competent, primary copper (chalcopyrite) ore. For gold in tight quartz, the rate may be about the same. Copper oxide ores and gold that is hosted in a more porous rock matrix are likely to have penetration rates that are at least two to three times higher, and an even higher rate should be appropriate for uranium hosted in sandstone. As noted above, the length of the effective leach cycle is likely to be measured in years. On this basis, the ultimate penetration distance (dp) would vary from less than 50 to several 100 mm when a particular ore is leached to exhaustion. Several sets of mathematical manipulations are necessary to convert a rock size distribution and corresponding value of dp into an estimated extraction-rate curve. The first step is to break the ROM size distribution down into intervals and then calculate the radius for the mean rock size in each interval. This is shown in Table 1 for rock sizes up to 1.75 m (about 6 ft) in diameter. The next step is to calculate the volume of unleached core and the fraction of rock that is leached. This is done for the following three values of dp: 25, 100 and 250 mm. Results are shown in Table 2. The third step is to select the ultimate level of recovery that will be achieved in the fraction of material that is effectively leached, i.e., the outer zone that is penetrated by the leach solution. Zoning is the legal means by which land use can be controlled. Although zoning laws have historically been quick to prevent quarrying, one is hard pressed to find zoning ordinances which specifically state that land should be used (or held in reserve) for quarrying and prevent other uses such as recreation, housing, etc. This situation is especially true when the mineral to be quarried has a low intrinsic value such as sand, gravel, and crushed stone. The chance of a gold mine surviving urban sprawl is probably considerably greater than that of a sand and gravel pit, even though it is possible that the dollar value of the sand and gravel' would exceed that of the gold mine. The research reported herein was concerned with two major topics: to delineate the real costs associated with the non-protection of our construction aggregate resources (growth minerals) and to develop a computer simulation model which would aid planners in making economically sound decisions. This paper describes the problems faced by the mineral aggregate industry and discusses the role of computer simulation in planning problems. It briefly describes a simulation model which has been developed and previously reported12 and discusses the results of a pilot study conducted on the Tri-City area (Albany, Schenectady, and Troy, New York). 3

Because ammonia can form complex ions with certain of the transition metals, such as copper and nickel, it has long been of interest to extractive metallurgists interested in leaching or separating these metals. Although it is a relatively expensive reagent, ammonia is amenable to recycle because of its volatility. In development of processes utilizing ammoniacal leaching or separation schemes, information regarding solution vapor pressures, pH and solubility limitations is needed. There is voluminous literature on ammonia-water systems generated by the urea industry. However, frequently the systems of interest to metallurgists differ significantly in concentrations of ammonia used, the temperatures of interest. Furthermore, the differences arising from the presence of metal values in solution must be comprehended. There is surprisingly little information readily available regarding systems of practical interest to metallurgy. As a result, those interested in ammonia-based processes end up either doing expensive laboratory research to obtain necessary data or overdesigning the process. Another approach to obtaining desired information about ammoniacal systems is to attempt to calculate from first principles the various solution properties. This paper is being presented to illustrate what can be accomplished by estimating the state of equilibrium in an ammoniacal carbonate system from available thermodynamic information making simplifying assumptions when needed.

The abstract discusses the issue of mine equipment fires caused by hot surface ignition of flammable liquids. The research investigates the ignition probability of liquid fuels (diesel, engine oil, hydraulic fluid) on different metal surfaces (stainless steel, cast iron, carbon steel) under various ventilation speeds. The results show that the type of metal and ventilation speed influence the ignition temperature, with diesel being the most easily ignited fuel and carbon steel requiring a higher ignition temperature. The study provides data for understanding equipment mine fires and developing mitigation strategies.

The leaching behavior of gold in ammonical solutions with iodine as an oxidant has been investigated using cyclic voltammogram and Tafel polarization. The majority of experiments was carried out at 75°C and the results were compared with the equilibrium consideration on the iodine-ammonia system. The distribution of nine iodide containing species at various pH values in the absence and presence of ammonia was considered at three different temperatures. It was found that by introduction of ammonia into the system, the concentration of iodide (r), iodine (12) and triiodide (13') is increased substantially which in turn helps the rate of dissolution of gold. The apparent activation energy was found to be about 46 kJ/mole, indicating a chemical controlled mechanism.

Approximately 50 percent of the uranium resource of the Free World is in deposits of Precambrian age, principally in lower Proterozoic conglomerates in Canada and South Africa (Uranium Resources, Joint Report, ENEA and IAEA, 1967). Most of the uranium resource of the United States is in Mesozoic and Cenozoic continental clastic sedimentary rocks that fill intracratonic basins. The Atomic Energy Commission is investigating the distribution of uranium and thorium in the Precambrian of the Western United States and the relationship of, time-space-facies patterns of uranium and thorium enrichment in the Precambrian to the major resources of uranium in the Mesozoic and Cenozoic host sedimentary rocks. This paper summarizes the results of preliminary studies of the Precambrian in the Southwestern United States including New Mexico, Arizona, southern Nevada, and southern California (Fig. 1). The host rock provenances for the major uranium resources in epigenetic deposits of Mesozoic and Cenozoic age in the Western United States were in areas of extensive Precambrian exposure along the eastern margin of the Phanerozoic geosynclinal belt (Fig. 2). Mesozoic continental clastic sediments in the Colorado Plateau contain about two-thirds of the uranium resource of the United States. These sediments formed from detritus derived from the Mogollon highland in the Southwestern United States where the Precambrian was extensively exposed (Stewart, et al., 19593 McKee, et al., 1959; McKee, et al., 1956; Craig, et al., 1955) (Fig. 2). A genetic relationship may exist between this provenance and the major uranium deposits of the Colorado Plateau. The Precambrian might be equally important in the genesis of uranium deposits whether the most important process in the formation of these deposits was the leaching of low-order intrinsic amounts of uranium from Precambrian granite or from Mesozoic pyroclastics derived from syntexis of the Precambrian basement rocks (Malan, 1968).

The coal industry in the United States has undergone significant economic changes during the past six years. The price of coal remained relatively constant from 1950 to 1969 (See Figures 1 and 2). Steam coal prices tripled and metallurgical coal prices doubled from 1969 to 1974. This price structure has created a new economic environment for coal preparation. Contributing factors to these price trends include: ? Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 ? Mid-East oil embargo of 1973 ? United Mine Workers of America contract agreements ? Productivity decrease (tons per man-day basis) ? Environmental Protection Agency regulations The increased value of coal justifies additional capital investment in cleaning facilities to optimize yield. Current trends include recovery of existing slurry ponds and recleaning of refuse. Coal preparation plant product yield and quality must be evaluated in terms of the amount of capital expended and cost of operation. Therefore, it is advantageous to optimize the plant product based on clean coal selling price and rate of return on investment.

Today, the two major operating costs of rubber tired off-road equipment are diesel fuel and tires. Mine Management has minimal control over the ever accelerating diesel fuel costs. However, they can exercise control over abnormal tire costs. Fortunately, with available technology and cost analysis methods, experience shows us the outlook for controlling tire costs is encouraging. Most earthmoving operations using off-road, rubber tired haulage and support equipment have abnormally high total tire costs. These costs, utilizing Tire Information Management, have been reduced more than 30%; 20% can often be guaranteed. Management Apathy on the subject of tires in a complex mining operation perhaps can be understood, but management apathy applied to an abnormally high operating cost, of which tires are, begs for a solution.' Tires have been professionally neglected for many years in most mine operations. This is exemplified in the January, 1982 issue of Mining Engineering by Charlie Son in his article Reducing Earthmoving Tire Costs. He compared the efforts to improve diesel engine costs to the same efforts given to earthmover tires.

The deep South African gold mines rely on refrigeration to provide a safe working environment. Chilled water, which is produced in large central refrigeration plants, is distributed throughout mines In insulated pipes. In view of the high cost of the insulation materials and recent regulations which prohibit the use of certain insulation materials, a careful examination of the actual benefits of insulating chilled water pipes was undertaken. The objective of the investigation was to produce general guidelines regarding the use of insulation, but the results of numerous studies have shown that the use of insulation is extremely site specific and thus no general guidelines can be given. To assist ventilation engineers with studies on insulation requirements for their cooling systems a computer program has been developed. This paper describes the personal computer program which contains the same user friendly interface as developed for other COMRO programs. Is fully menu driven and incorporates a comprehensive HELP facility which provides background information and assistance with the selection of input data. The effects on the ventilation air and chilled water temperatures from not insulating chilled water pipes in certain areas are calculated. Air leakage, heat flow from the surrounding rock to the ventilation air and heat flow from the ventilation air to the water flowing in chilled water pipes are taken into account. A simple cooling system is considered in which cold water is distributed over a distance of 1 000 m through pipes to a single air cooler. The influences of changes in the temperature of the chilled water and ventilation air, as well as air leakage on the insulation requirements are determined.

The objective of the project was to optimize the ventilation parameters of a continuous miner underboom scrubber to further control. the amount of airborne dust discharged during mining, to further reduce the exposure of face personnel for an exhaust brattice ventilation system, and avoid recirculation of contaminants at the face. This research was performed in an underground coal mine in Utah. The tasks included preliminary face ventilation evaluation and optimization of the scrubber system to eliminate recirculation of the scrubber discharge air. Airflow tests were conducted on the currently used dust control system and the modified scrubber system. Tracer gas tests were performed to evaluate face ventilation effectiveness. Confirmatory tests of the scrubber system under actual operating conditions, modifications to the scrubber system, and a comparative evaluation of the scrubber system vs. the existing system were performed. This paper presents the results of the airflow pattern tests and the respirable dust levels in the modified scrubber system and the existing system. The optimized face ventilation parameters and the developed operating guidelines may provide the benefits of dust reduction, better face ventilation, and improved visibility.

The evaluation of Abandoned Mined Lands can involve the investigation of very large areas of land. Often, the locations of critical areas or impending problems are unknown, and are not easily identified from the surface. Microseismic monitoring has been demonstrated to be effective in identifying potential instabilities and active movement in mines from distances of several kilometers. By placing sensors in proximity to, or in contact with, a high acoustic conductance layer close to the mined zone, large areas can be monitored for potential problems with a minimum of sensors and drillholes. As part of a U.S. Bureau of Mines contract, a prototype system was developed to identify and locate potential instability problems over wide areas of land. Once a problem area has been located, the system can be used to analyze the type of the problem, its size, relative degree of instability, and potential for damage. Continued monitoring after application of remedial measures can effectively determine the efficacy of those measures.

Global mining company achieves significant productivity gains with three-dimensional (3D) mine models developed with Abaqus finite element analysis software. In a steep change beyond traditional processes, Abaqus finite element analysis (FEA) software from Simulia (the Dassault Systèmes? brand for realistic simulation), is being used to enhance mine design and engineering simulation at a number of major mines around the world. In North and South America, Africa and Australia some of the world?s biggest mining companies are applying FEA technology to evaluate safety and improve design planning, implementation and operations. Beck Arndt Engineering (BAE), a Sydney-based international consultancy, is a pioneer in the commercial development of engineering solutions for the mining industry. The consultancy has worked closely with engineers at Simulia Australia to expand the use of Abaqus FEA simulation software for mining applications. Among the early adoptors of mine-ready FEA technology is the world?s largest miner, BHP Billiton. With BAE?s help, BHP has already applied this technology to evaluate mines in Canada and Australia. At the BHP Billiton Nickel West Perserverance Deeps Project in Western Australia, Abaqus FEA software is now being used to help engineer the safety and productivity of planned deep-mining operations. To achieve this goal in the deep-mining environment significant technological innovation is required. Using measurements of site deformation and seismicity, Abaqus FEA models have been calibrated and, in a single day, used to simulate a full, 3D, inelastic analysis of a mine?s life cycle. In recent years, similar applications at Debswana?s Jwaneng Mine in Botswana, the Newcrest Mining Ridge-way Deeps Project in New South Wales, Australia and Rio Tinto?s Argyle Diamond mine in Western Australia have also established Abaqus FEA analysis as the lead-ing technology for multi scale, simulation-aided mining engineering. Joop Nagtegaal, a pioneer of FEA and a Dassault Systèmes Corporate Fellow, said that Abaqus FEA software is unique in its capabilities to enable mining engineers to investigate design innovations from the drawing board to full production. ?In the design stage, Abaqus models, which include rockmass volumes spanning several kilo-meters around the ore body and down to excavations just a few meters across, are used to compare and optimize engineering options,? Nagtegaal said. ?Then, as the mine goes into production, large volumes of data from the field are incorporated with the analysis models to allow them to be calibrated to a precision not previously available to the mining industry.?

Two major events highlight recent developments in US ore and coal ports: completion of the last series of modern taconite pellet transshipment facilities on the Great Lakes; and modernization and construction of coal ports, particularly on the East and Gulf Coasts. The New Taconite Transportation System To reduce raw material transportation costs, a fleet of new generation high-capacity 304-m (1,000-ft) self-unloading vessels were built to carry iron ore pellets from the Minnesota-Michigan iron ranges to the steel plants on the lower Great Lakes. Existing port facilities had to be modernized, revised, or completely rebuilt to accommodate these large vessels. Some of these were Burlington Northern's Allouez, WI, loading dock; Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Railway Co.'s Two Harbors, MN, facility; Republic Steel's Lorain, OH, facility; and Chessie's Toledo, OH, dock. Allouez and Two Harbors receive taconite pellets from unit trains and load them onto large vessels either after dumping or via a large stockpile and reclaim system. The Lorain facility receives iron ore pellets from self-unloading vessels' discharge boom conveyor and reloads the pellets into rail cars or small vessels destined to inland steel mills. The Toledo facility receives Armco pellets from vessels, stockpiles them through the winter, and reloads into unit trains destined for Armco's mills along Chessie's rail tracks. Burlington Northern's $75-million Allouez pellet dock, completed in June 1977, was built to receive pellets produced by Hibbing Taconite Co. and National Pellet Plant in Minnesota, stockpile them through the winter when the lakes are frozen, and load them into 304-m (1,000-ft) vessels in the shipping season. As much as 10 Mt (11 million st) of pellets may be stockpiled within the loop track. A 6-km (4-mile) long conveyor system connects the stockpile area and the dock. Thirty-six new concrete silos were built on the dock to house 2 kt (2,000 st) each of pellets before shiploading. The $35.5-million expansion of the Two Harbors transshipment facilities began shiploading in July 1978 after ground breaking in Aug. 1974. Particularly noteworthy is the first application of the Orboom system-a breakthrough in technology for the modernization of the century-old pocket docks on the Great Lakes to accommodate the new generation of super vessels. The pocket-type loading dock has been a standard on the lakes for nearly a hundred years. Bottom-dump rail cars fill the ore pockets on top of a finger pier. Gravity chutes matching standardized ore ship hatch spacings are lowered to fill the holds of a 20.3-kt (20,000-dwt) ship. The construction is simple and the loading swift. In spite of advances in technology elsewhere, most of these docks continue to serve the iron ore and coal trade in the same manner they did in the 19th century. Although performance of the pocket docks on small vessels remains outstanding, the new 304-m (1,000-ft) vessels are beyond the reach of the old docks. After extensive development, the Orboom system (Patent No. 4,065,002) for pocket docks was successfully developed. The heart of the Orboom system is the retractable shuttle loading arm which loads the wide beam vessels. The Orboom shuttles are fed by existing pockets of the dock that, in turn, are charged by a tripper conveyor along the length of the dock. The Two Harbors shiploading system is supported by a 0.9 Mt (1 million st) storage-reclaim network. Unit trains are bottom dumped. In cold regions rinsing of spent cyanide leach heaps is stopped during winter and is resumed again after snow melts. The effect of this idle time on the overall cyanide removal process was studied in this work. Samples were collected for rinsing tests from one heap at the Ryan Lode Mine of Citigold Alaska, Inc., near Fairbanks. The material was tested for cyanide removal a large column, 1.22 m high by 20 cm square, and in a small column, 1.22 m high by 10 cm in diameter. The rinse water was analyzed at regular intervals to determine the rate of cyanide removal from the solids. It was found that diffusion plays a major role in the removal of cyanide from the ore particles. Calculations showed that the insulating effect of the snow cover on the heap provides an excellent moderates the interior temperature of the heap, and would be expected to help the progress of the diffusion reaction during winter. The result expected result wil1 be higher cyanide values reporting to the rinse water after snow-melt.

"Talc formed by hydrothermal alteration of preexisting carbonate rocks is known to be nearly monomineralic, and lacking in amphiboles. In southwest Montana, talc formed from hydrothermally altered dolomitic marbles, and is still actively mined. These talc deposits are typically in contact with quartzofeldspathic gneiss and marble. Accessory minerals vary between these rocks and the ore producing body; the identification and characterization of such minerals requires carefully selected analytical methods. Recent litigation and ensuing confusion over the petrology and asbestos content of these deposits challenges the talc mining industry in Montana, and elsewhere in the world. INTRODUCTION Commercial talc has been mined from the deposits in southwest Montana since the 1940s, and by 1956 the region had output 200,000 tons of talc ore (Chidester et al., 1964). Commercial talc refers to rocks containing more than 20% of the mineral talc (McCarthy et al., 2006); the ores from Montana typically contain upwards of 90% talc. This region remains the leading domestic source of talc in the U.S. partly due to the reserves in the area, and partly due to the diagnostic purity of the ore compared to that of other regions, some of which are no longer actively mined. The mineral talc, a sheet silicate, is expressed by the formula Mg3Si4O10(OH)2, and therefore can form in geologic environments that are rich in Mg, Si, O and water. The protolith for the talc deposits in southwest Montana is a dolomitic marble, but other common protoliths include ultramafic igneous, mafic igneous, and siliceous dolomites (McCarthy et al., 2006). Physical properties such as hardness of 1 on Mohs hardness scale, white streak and slippery feel are among some of the reasons why talc is so widely used as fillers in a number of industries. In decreasing order, ceramics, paper, paint, roofing, plastics, rubber, and cosmetics are the leading domestic industries that use talc despite the decreasing trend in U.S. talc use and production since 1994 (Virta, 2015). The purpose of this paper is to describe the mechanism of talc formation in southwest Montana by focusing on talc deposits and surrounding rocks in the Ruby, Greenhorn, and the Gravelly Ranges, and to relate the mechanism of formation to the composition of talc ores. The compositional data show mineral content of selected ores, and the major and trace element content of those minerals, specifically talc. Our electron microprobe (EPMA), powder x-ray diffraction (XRD) and x-ray fluorescence data for samples from five mines in these three ranges provide continued evidence of the purity of these ores despite claims made during recent litigation that these ores contain asbestos. The five mines that we discuss include the Beaverhead, Treasure, Regal, Willow Creek, and Yellowstone Mines (Figure 1.)"

Recent investigations by Mannesmann Research have shown that disintegration of sinter with widely varying quality levels is subject to a much more complex set of influences than was previously assumed. It was confirmed that disintegration at temperatures between 300 and 600 °C is triggered by the degradation of hematite. The specific tendency of hematite to disintegrate is, however, not constant: sinters containing the same amount of hematite can show widely differing disintegration tendencies depending upon structural homogeneity, porosity and gangue quantity. Especially sinters with heterogeneous structures transmit stress to the hematite phase and this favours disintegration. Another factor is the brittleness of the glassy silicate phase, which can be influenced even by small modifications of minor gangue constituents.

The SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory’s two-mile-long particle accelerator generates the world’s brightest X-rays from its Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) freeelectron laser. This facility has driven groundbreaking discoveries in medicine and industry. The LCLS-II-HE project will provide a significant increase in laser energy, allowing cutting-edge research in fields including biology and environmental science. A key project component is the Low Emittance Injector Tunnel (LEIT), a 240-foot-long tunnel to be built alongside the existing accelerator and connected to it via a 30-footlong Transfer Tunnel. This paper discusses site and scientific constraints that led to the selection of the LEIT configuration: tunnels to be constructed using the sequential excavation method in mixed-face conditions comprising native rock and placed backfill, and critical design considerations including protection of overlying and adjacent historic structures and structural accommodation of near-fault seismic loading.

Introduction Sulfide copper, zinc and iron concentrates are recovered in the 5000 ton per day flotation plant operated by Cities Service Company at Copperhill, Tennessee. The heavy-sulphide ore is first ground to 50 pct. minus 200 mesh and a bulk concentrate floated. The bulk concentrate, over 60 pct. of the ore weight, is reground to 72 pct. minus 200 mesh and then treated in a selective flotation circuit to recover copper and zinc concentrates. The tailing of selective float is the iron sulphide material source for the manufacture of sulfuric acid and iron sinter. The valuable minerals in the ore are chalcopyrite, marmatitic sphalerite, pyrite, and pyrrhotite. A typical mineralogical analysis will be found in table 1. A typical material flowsheet will be found in figure 1. Shown in the flowsheet are a scavenger float on the bulk rougher tailing and a copper-talc separation unit. At times a lead-copper separation circuit has been run.
