"Mining roots run deep in Glenrock, WY, a town that was founded in part, because of the coal mining that began in the late 1800s. But that rich history also now threatens large parts of the town that were built over the top of the mines. Like many towns in the Western United States, mining is a proud part of the historical fabric and heritage of the town, but the legacy issues from past mining activities continue to present challenges to modern-day engineers.In the case of Glenrock, a small town about 40 km (25 miles) east of Casper, it is flooding from a century of water that has accumulated in the down geologic dip of the furthest northeastern extent of 87 ha (217 acres) of mine workings that has made the town susceptible to sinkholes and other issues (Fig. 1).Full commercial coal mining production began in Glenrock in 1887 during the development of the Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley railway. Due to poor overlying roof rock and continuous flooding within Glenrock, Mines No. 1 and 2 were fully closed in 1909. During its history, an estimated 87 ha (217 acres) were mined with 50 to 60 percent extraction ratio within the eastern town limits through room-and-pillar mining. It is estimated that the mines produced 22 kt/a (25,000 stpy) during their lifetime. A century later, the water pressure built up in the northeastern most portion of the mine has created serious concerns for residents.In 2016, the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality’s Abandoned Mine Lands Divisions (AML) investigated a number of subsidence events in the town including sinkholes following heavy precipitation. The AML investigations confirmed that most events were related to the previous mining in the area.Mitigation efforts on the mines were done in the 1980s and 1990s, but the problems in the town and in a nearby subdivision persisted, leading the AML to search for alternative solutions."

Researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed the Saturn light that significantly improves illumination for roof-bolting machine operators while reducing glare. The existing roof-bolter lighting was the baseline and was compared to the Saturn at 100, 75 and 50 percent intensities. Discomfort glare and disability glare were measured by the De Boer rating scale and the Mars Letter Contrast sensitivity test, respectively. Thirty study participants were tested. Discomfort glare was reduced at least three levels with the Saturn luminaire. Visibility levels were four to 6.5 times better with the Saturn than with the baseline. The Saturn design is freely available for commercialization.

When using perlite as an insulation, it is important to determine the requirements for different applications as this influences the processing of the perlite. In cryogenic application, perlite properties of low density and fine particle size are desirable, while loose fill insulation applications require similar properties and water repellency. However, in perlite insulating concrete applications, a coarser particle, of higher density, is required to provide improved compression strength. The essential properties of perlite including particle size, density, and surface treatment are discussed in relation to the various insulation applications. Also, typical mineral processing and manufacturing techniques are reviewed.

Following the completion of the paper presented in February, 1972, data were received from many other mines and some original respondents submitted more complete questionnaires. The computer program was changed to permit the results to reflect more clearly all the data reported by the mines. The original paper was revised to reflect the new information. There were significant changes in some numerical values, particularly where the size of the sample changed appreciably. Some limited samples considered originally in arriving at conclusions were not relied on in this revision. The revised tables and text are of the same design and format as the original paper.

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is prevalent in mechanized underground mines. Federal regulations are often not complied with effectively. Miners are also prone to ignoring administrative guidelines and/or personal protective equipment for hearing conservation. As a result, quality of life among experienced miners plummets while occupational risks increase at workplaces. This research focused on auxiliary fans used in underground mines. These fans work at high rotational speed and generate extremely high levels of noise in close proximity to miners. Silencers used are often of little effect due to poor maintenance. A new silencer is tried in the laboratory with the objective of easy maintenance and resulting reduction of noise exposure for miners.

INTRODUCTION Boliden Mineral AB currently mines sulfide ores in 18 mines and processes them in eight concentrators. Most ores are typically complex. Gold consti¬tutes a considerable part of the value of the ore reserves. The value of total production in 1984, distributed by different metals is shown in the pie chart below. Traditionally, gold has been recovered as a byproduct, or coproduct, along with silver in floated copper and lead concen¬trates. Gold-price trends over the past decade have prompted comprehensive efforts by Boliden to increase the recovery of gold in concentration processes. Gravimetric recovery of gold in the grinding circuit is one method that has led to quick results. This method supplements tradi¬tional recovery processes based on flotation. The development of a feasible circuit, and the results obtained by its application in the central concentrator at Boliden, in the northern Swedish province of Västerbotten, are reported below. GOLD MINERALOGY IN BOLIDEN ORES The gold content in Boliden Mineral's ores is primarily in the form of alloys with the elements silver and mercury. A minor quantity appears in an unalloyed form.

A ventilation research study was conducted by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and a cooperating longwall trona mine in the Green River basin of Wyoming in the United States. The objective of the study was to evaluate the movement of longwall face air and exchanges between the face and worked-out areas to document the presence or absence of face airflow pathways between these locations. Tracer gas experiments using sulfur hexafluoride (SF6  ) were conducted to describe air movement on the face and in the mined portion of the active panel. Maintaining adequate ventilation air on longwall faces is important for worker safety and for the dilution of gases emitted from the face and caved gob.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research with the goal of automating underground coal mine roof bolters for greater mine safety. In the project described here, the Bureau has focused on automating the drilling portion of the drilling and bolting cycle. A drill monitoring system designed and developed by Parvus Corp. of Salt Lake City. UT, was placed on a Bureau model roof- bolting drill. The drilling parameters of torque, thrust, rotation rate, penetration rate, and position are monitored through sensors connected to an asynchronous, control-oriented local area network (LAN) that communicates with data-accumulating and data-processing nodes. By placing microprocessors at the two data nodes and at the valve control nodes, and combining these nodes with a personal computer (PC), the monitoring and control system can achieve parallel processing capabilities. Such capabilities are referred to as locally intelligent distributed processing. Only data that have changed significantly are reported through the LAN to a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system mounted on an IBM- compatible 80286 PC. The SCADA system displays the values of the drilling parameters and calculates the specific energy of drilling, which is then used as an indicator of the type of rock being drilled. Besides monitoring the drilling process, an operator at the computer can control the rotation and thrust of the drill from a remote location through the SCADA program and can set drilling parameters on the basis of observed values of the specific energy of drilling.

Gold assays from production blastholes in the Mercur Hill Pit were used to delineate known ore zones and to determine how well previous exploration drilling defined these zones. The most important factors causing inadequate ore zone definition were: 1) inappropriate location of drill holes relative to the ore zones, 2) presence of stopes from previous mining, 3) sampling and assaying errors, and 4) smoothing of the ore zone boundaries during ore reserve estimation. Infill drilling strategies were evaluated to determine the efficiency with which a given drill pattern defined the known ore zones. A drilling strategy was developed which improved ore zone delineation when compared to techniques which maintained uniform drill spacing.

"Government support for Canada’s mineral industry was on full display during the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) conference in Toronto, ON, Canada on March 3-6. First, there was the announcement of the five-year extension of Canada’s Mineral Exploration Tax Credit (METC), the first multi-year extension of the METC since its inception in 2000. Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, Amarjeet Sohi, added to that support when he spoke at the opening keynote session and announced the Canadian Minerals and Metals Plan (CMMP), a plan that aims to map out the future of the industry in Canada. Finally, the support for the mining industry was buttoned up with a visit to the conference by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.More than 25,000 people from 135 countries attended the annual conference that features a robust trade floor, technical sessions and an investors’ exchange that aims to put mining companies in touch with potential investors. Mining companies and ambassadors from nations around the world are given the opportunity to present to small audiences throughout the conference and this year PDAC was able to sway the Prime Minister to speak on its behalf.Trudeau sat down with PDAC President Glenn Mullan on March 5 to talk about the METC extension and a host of other issues important to the Canadian and global mining industry, giving the home country a bit of a profile advantage when it came to making a pitch to investors.Trudeau entered the week of the conference in the midst of the most serious political scandal of his career and was defending himself against accusations of political interference with the top prosecutor in the land over a criminal case involving one of Canada’s largest companies, SNC-Lavalin. During the question-and-answer session at the Metro Toronto Convention Center, Trudeau seemed more than happy to keep to the discussion about mining. He spoke favorably about the industry during the half hour conversation and praised the industry for its work with Indigenous people as well as its efforts to advance technology and innovation. He made a case that Canada is a safe and reliable place for investment in the minerals sector.“We are at a time of change right now, of transformation with new technologies and global supply chains, and everyone is trying to adjust to the new realities that have accelerated so much these past years,” Trudeau said. “What we are trying to do as a country and what you have done as an industry is to try to look at where things are going – go to where the puck is going to be, not where it is. You, as an industry, know that investments in innovation, research, science — investment in technology and partnerships with Indigenous communities are all things that are going to give you opportunities to be competitive in the coming years.”"

INTRODUCTION The planning process for projects requiring construction of tunnels in urban environments can be highly complex and involves interaction with professionals of many disciplines. Typically the initial step in the planning process is to establish basic design criteria for the tunnel or tunnel system consistent with its intended purpose. Such criteria might include acceptable tunnel geometry, minimum and maximum slope or other associated criteria. Ideally, once the basic criteria have been established, the next step in the process might include establishing technically feasible horizontal and vertical alignment and shaft siting alternatives and developing "ball park" construction and operational cost estimates for the alternatives. Comparisons can then be made regarding the relative technical and economic merits of the alternatives and the most favorable alignment(s) are selected for further study or preliminary design. Typically the last and perhaps the most important task that is conducted during the planning stage includes identifying issues and potential problems to be addressed during the design and construction stages of the project. Many issues warrant consideration during the planning phase of a tunneling project. For the purposes of this paper, these issues can be divided into two broad categories: technical and non-technical. Important technical issues include, among others, general design criteria, geotechnical and geoenvironmental issues, and constructibility issues. Important non-technical issues include, among others, right-of-way and easement related considerations, project scheduling constraints, both short and long term environmental impacts and overall cost/benefit aspects of the project. With respect to influence on the planning process, these two groups of issues often cannot be separated completely. Inflation and increasingly complex tax laws in the United States combined with rising national ism overseas have made the structuring of viable financing plans which meet the requirements of the various parties involved equally important in determining project success as the design of an efficient mining plan or selection of the optimal size equipment. Whereas the use of computerized analysis to design and evaluate the technical parameters of resource ventures is well accepted, computerized evaluation of the investment criteria (qualitative and quantitative) of the various parties to the project (mining firm, financial institution, product buyer, host government, etc.) is a more recent application which can make a material impact in strengthening project economics. By identifying the objectives of the parties and critically evaluating and testing them with the technical and economic/financial constraints on the project the sponsors can design a financial structure tailored to the attributes of the deposit. A myriad of new financial techniques have evolved for financing natural resource ventures, from "Commodity-backed bonds" to tax based limited partner- ships, but in every case the structure of the financing mechanism depends on carefully matching the parameters of the financial structure with the economic characteristics of the project and the objectives of its sponsors. This presentation outlines a methodlogy for computer based project evaluation in the design and structuring of stronger financial plans for natural resource ventures.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION Shortwall mining is one of the newest mining meth¬ods to be introduced into the world coal industry. The technique of shortwalling seems to have a number of origins, but it is generally agreed that it is an outgrowth of pillar-and-stall mining where timbering was employed as the primary means of roof support. In early opera¬tions the face was undercut by a shortwall cutter, hand¬bored, and blasted. The coal was loaded by hand or gathering arm loader. Australia, having experienced success with this method, advanced the technique through the use of mechanized roof supports in 1968. Although there were several attempts at shortwalling in the US, it was not until 1973 that Eastern Associated Coal Corp.'s Federal No. 1 mine successfully extracted a shortwall panel. Table 1 is a list of shortwall opera¬tions in the US as of April 1976. Shortwall mining is a method of mining in which a continuous miner cuts and loads from the short end of a rectangular pillar of coal while hydraulically powered self-advancing roof supports provide protective cover. Characteristics of a shortwall system include panel di¬mensions (Fig. 1) of 610 to 1219 m (2000 to 4000 ft) in length, face widths of 30 to 61 m (100 to 200 ft), straight-line ventilation, and production machinery, with the exception of roof supports, commonly used on con¬tinuous miner units. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS The justification for shortwalling is primarily eco¬nomic, i.e., increased production and recovery concur¬rent with savings in material and labor. The method also has a number of secondary benefits including the much needed progress it has stimulated in deep mine technology, the alternatives it presents to some of the problems resulting from the 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act, and is perhaps a key to the solution of the enigmatic labor problems which plague the industry. The advantages of shortwall mining over continuous miner units include the following: a highly effective method of ventilation and dust control; a greater per¬centage of extraction (approximately 85%) ; fewer equipment moves, hence more efficient operating time; cost savings on materials such as roof bolts, rock dust, ventilation curtains, timbering materials, and the labor needed to supply, load, and transport these materials; a cyclical pattern of mining, each phase of which, i.e., development and retreat, lasts for approximately three months and appears to be psychologically motivating as well as highly productive; and improved safety. In addition to these positive aspects, a shortwall sys¬tem also has advantages over a longwall system, and these are listed as follows: the capital outlay for a shortwall system is one-third to one-fourth that for a longwall (1976 prices); the shortwall system utilizes equipment that is used on a continuous miner section, with the ex¬ception of the roof support system; there is a great deal of flexibility in areas with numerous gas wells and in areas where surface subsidence cannot be tolerated; the shortwall has reduced tailgate problems, since the tail¬gate entry serves as a return airway only; and the cyclical pattern of mining insures that the mining machinery pro¬duces coal even while the roof support system is being moved to another panel. There are several parameters which govern the se¬lection and use of a shortwall system. They are all of equal importance, and hence are not listed in any par¬ticular order. These are deposit size, seam height, seam inclination, roof and floor conditions, depth of over¬burden, subsidence and chain pillar extraction, man¬power, ventilation, and materials handling. Deposit Size Reserves available for shortwalling should be suffi¬cient for at least an eight to ten-year period, since this seems to be the effective life, without rebuilding, of a hydraulic roof support under average conditions. This study presents the application of low-cost dust monitors (LCDMs) for real-time monitoring of respirable dust in a mining environment. LCDMs significantly enhance data collection by providing continuous, granular and cost-effective dust concentration readings. This case study demonstrates that by deploying LCDMs, mining operators can respond quickly to changes in dust levels, improving occupational safety and air quality management. The results show how such monitoring technologies can be integrated into routine operations to reduce dust exposure and prevent health hazards such as silicosis, especially when coupled with appropriate mitigation strategies.

Innovative designs, mining, construction and reclamation practices are used at PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara's Batu Hijau mine on Sumbawa Indonesia to develop a cost-effective, environmentally sound, stockpile and dumping system. The mine production rate is over 200 million tonnes per year (50 million tonnes processed with 150 million tonnes being stockpiled for processing later or placed in waste dumps). Dump development for over 150 million tonnes per year in a mountainous, tropical environment, while meeting environmental and permitting requirements is not an easy task. The effective implementation requires innovative techniques and practices from every department of the mine.

Gold metallurgy has advanced remarkably over the last decade. Even more significant progress will be made over the next five years, particularly in the application of advanced comminution techniques and control, preconcentration (flotation, ore sorting and coal gold agglomeration), enhancement of cyanide leaching technology, non- cyanide leaching, treatment of refractory ores and concentrates, and improved recovery systems. Carbon adsorption processes have become standard practice for ores with relatively high gold/silver ratios, but ion exchange potentially offers distinct advantages and has recently been demonstrated to perform better in at least one application. Even in the established zinc precipitation and CIP processes several important practical improvements are emerging as experience is gained at the ever increasing number of operating plants. Improved process control and reduction of reagent consumption costs are two important goals of industry at this time.

"Clays are known to contribute to a wide range of mineral processing challenges. These challenges can haunt a plant from the pit, through the beneficiation plant and even to the tailings pond and process water. Each step that the clay is present potentially experiences significant and costly impacts to the process efficiencies. The effect of clay minerals on the performance of phosphate flotation was investigated. The investigation led to an understanding of the movement of clay through the beneficiation plant, the impact on reagent usage, and the overall flotation performance. INTRODUCTION With the decline in mineral feed grades, mineral processing will continue to face challenges. One significant challenge would be obtaining high recoveries of industry specified quality mineral concentrates with lower quality raw minerals. Other challenges may be the handling of the excess tails and process water being produced to maintain a mill’s production volumes. For example, increased levels of clay have been, and will continue to be, a topic of concern for many mines. Some of these concerns include environmental regulations associated with water storage and discharge, as well as beneficiation. Gonglun Chen reported that clays produced in the phosphate industry are generally colloidal and fine (90% < 45 µm) (Chen, 2006). As such, these clays can take 20-30 years to settle, in the absence of polymeric assistance. The settling of these clays is essential as an accidental discharge can lead to substantial impacts to the wildlife and ecosystem. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has referenced cases where the discharge of water can result in fines in the tens of millions of dollars, and at times causing the processing plants shut down, depending on the volume and quality of this discharged water (EPA, 1997). The turbidity discharge criteria will vary from state to state. Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection has listed a turbidity maximum of 29 NTUs, or 60 mg/L total suspended solids, above the natural background condition (Florida Department of Environmental Protection, 2016). A lot of the literature has been focused on the impact of high levels of clay (>10%) on mineral processing. Farrokhpay has reported the significant impact of clay minerals on froth stability in copper flotation (Farrokhpay, 2012). He reported that clays can form a hydrophobic slime coating on the surface of bubbles, which can yield an increase in froth stability. Clay concentrations as low as 5% can have significant impacts on the rheological properties or slurry viscosities. Increased slurry viscosities can lead to either elevated pumping/processing energies being required, decrease in flotation efficiencies due to a decrease in bubble mobility through the pulp, or decreased throughput to manage these viscosities (Tu, 2005; Farrokhpay, 2013; Burdukova, 2014)."

It is a pleasure to introduce this session on frontier technology and present an overview of pyrometallurgical technology, as it is today and where it may be heading. While there have been many advances in hydro-metallurgical processing in our times, pyrometallurgy has not been still, and more novel processes have been introduced in the last four decades than in all previous ages of humanity put together. As a result, pyrometallurgy has managed to remain the predominant mode of producing metals from ores and concentrates: over 95% of the world primary metals production, including iron, manganese, copper, lead, chromium and nickel, is obtained via the high temperature route. Some of the characteristics of pyrometallurgy, along with the corollary industrial advantages are shown in [Table 1]: [ ] On the other hand, the necessity of operating at high temperatures also entails special problems and it is unfortunate that research on how to overcome these problems has not, in most cases, kept up with the development of these wonderful novel processes. We shall first speak of the important developments in pyrometallurgy which have brought us to the current state of the technology, and subsequently on the problems still encountered and the kind of research and development that will be necessary to bring pyrometallurgy on a par with other late twentieth-century technological developments.

Research and experience have demonstrated that the operating conditions of the flotation process are reflected in the froth?s appearance. Despite recent advances in image analysis and several algorithms developed for froth flotation, there still is not a comprehensive algorithm to accurately determine bubble features from actual froth images. Being able to accurately and automatically measure bubble size distribution is an important requirement for optimization and control of the flotation process. Segmentation is one of the most effective approaches for accurately determining the bubble size distribution. In the present study, a new bubble segmentation algorithm, which utilizes an adaptive marker-based watershed transform, is proposed to measure the bubble size distribution from froth images. The developed algorithm is validated using some industrial scale froth images from flotation cells at different duties.

Beginning in 1961 the Coal Research Bureau of the West Virginia University School of Mines began a program of research to investigate the potential of the magnetic separation process to remove sulfur of the pyritic form from pulverized coal. Using a so-called isodynamic magnetic separator (1) it was demonstrated that significant quantities of pyritic sulfur could be removed from coal. Pulverized coal samples representing several different coal seams were individually screened into sizes in the 48 mesh by 200 mesh (297 to 74 microns) range, and untreated and steam-air treated samples of each were processed by the magnetic separator. The results of the investigations to magnetically remove pyrite from coal were published in two separate reports issued by the Coal Research Bureau (2,3), The isodynamic magnetic separator was designed about 30 years ago for use in geological and mineralogical laboratories (1,4,5) to isolate one or more minerals exhibiting only small differences in their magnetic propertiese Specifically, to accomplish this, the air gap of the unit was designed to provide a nearly constant magnetic gradient both laterally and longitudinally in the separating zone. It is reported that mineral concentrates of 99.5 percent purity can-be produced on closely-sized fractions after several cleanings through the unit. The isodynamic magnetic separator, therefore, was not expected to process coal containing sizes smaller than 200 mesh, or to demonstrate commercial capability to process pulverized coal. The primary purpose of the Coal Research Bureau in using the unit was that of determining if the magnetic process could remove pyrite from coal, and thereby encourage further research directed toward development of acceptable full-scale processing equipment.
