The present study refers to passive systems for the treatment of acidic liquid effluents emanating from mixed-sulphide mines by means of an-aerobic compost wetlands. An effort was made for the thermodynamic study of the chemical systems that are involved in the reactions during the simulation of this specific system using laboratory columns and a pilot scale application. The substrate used was a mixture of cow manure, a high alkalinity organic substrate and chestnut woodchips, while the synthetic solutions prepared for the laboratory experiments contained the three basic metal contaminants i.e. Fe, Zn and Mn. The precipitation mechanism of the contained metals and the form in which these are precipitated was therefore investigated by constructing the equilibrium phase diagrams (Eh-pH diagrams) of the Me-S-C-H2O systems. Based on the experimental results from laboratory and pilot scale tests the stability conditions of the chemical species taking part in the aqueous solutions were also determined and verified with the thermodynamic data available. The thermodynamic analysis of the system was performed for ambient temperature, which is the prevailing temperature on field constructed compost wetlands. Results were further validated with the results obtained by the application of a five step sequential extraction procedure in the remaining substrate in order to determine the form in which the metals were precipitated.

Empresa Minera de Mantos Blancos S.A. operates two copper mines in Chile: Mantos Blancos and Mantoverde. Oxide ore is processed by acid leaching followed by SX-EW to produce copper cathodes. In order to define the leach process adequately for each ore, an extensive metallurgical testwork program was carried out during the feasibility study for each of these projects. A combination of heap and dump leaching was selected for Mantoverde, while a modification to the existing vat leach operation was selected for Mantos Blancos.

It appears that all extractive processes involve, at one or more points, fluids (gases or liquids) and that the flow of the fluid is an essential part of the functioning of the process. Usually that flow is turbulent and the turbulent flow frequently determines the rates of mass and heat transfer as well as other important phenomena such as bubble/droplet breakup and coalescence, particle suspension, etc. Over the past decade many attempts have been made to model turbulent flows in metallurgical unit operations. The present paper summarizes some of that work. Amongst the operations considered are agitated leaching, ladle metallurgy, electrowinning/refin- ing, induction furnaces, Hall cells and electro- magnetic casting. Where possible, comparisons are made between model predictions and experimental results.

Detailed mapping, using a large diameter diamond-drill in conjunction with high resolution reflection seismics, has increased known resources of kaolin clay and glass-grade silica sand from scattered deposits generally < 1 km2 to large areas of Cretaceous valley fill up to 130 m thick. Detailed chemical and physical analysis of drill core is presently underway. Silica sand deposits intersected in this study are up to 99.4 % SiO2 without beneficiation. Light grey to white kaolin clays identified by XRD and DT A have concentrations values (without beneficiation) up to 47.28% SiO2, 37.44% Al2O3, 0.45% Fe2O3, 0.49% K2O, 0.07% Nap, 0.07% CaO and 0.39% MgO.

The scale-dependent hydraulic properties in a fractured porphyry copper oxide deposit are investigated for relevance to in situ leach mine (ISLM) design. In most well field designs, mine operators assume that hydraulic properties represent a continuous spatial function, or continuum. The problem, however, is that the representative elemental volume, the volume over which hydraulic properties are described as a continuum, is a domain (if it exists) that occurs between end members representing varying degrees of heterogeneity. At the Cyprus Cas a Grande mine, transmissivity fluctuations are spatially correlated suggesting that at the scale of ISLM, the hydraulic process is heterogeneous and a typical continuum representation is inappropriate for design. Alternatively, a conditional stochastic approach using the simulated annealing (SA) technique is deemed useful for the imaging of heterogeneous hydraulic properties. Specifically, SA preserves transmissivity extremes and spatial complexity, both necessary for accurate conditioning of a flow simulator. Also, the stochastic continuum approach provides an avenue whereby uncertainty (or risk) may be addressed. Currently, the SA weaknesses are that it is computationally time consuming, and uncertainty may increase when simulating under conditions of statistical isotropy. Recognizing that ISLM exerts a dynamic influence on hydraulic properties with time, the mine design should be reevaluated at intervals throughout the evolution of the leaching process.

In a world dependent in part on the consumption of depletable natural resources, development of new areas of mineralization is a necessity for replacing those reserves. Exploration, which is the initial task of replacement, is an information-gathering process which supplies input for management decisions on mine development. If the demand for resources is the driving force of exploration, then the scientific basis for its pursuance is the hypothesis of anomalous mineralization in a metallogenic province, which is tested by measuring physical characteristics of natural phenomenon. The resulting data are reduced, analyzed, and interpreted to locate expressions or responses associated with possible ore bodies. The process is, in fact, repeated in ever increasing measurement detail to increase the accuracy and precision of information for decision making. Exploration ceases when management makes the decision to develop a mineralized area, to hold a property for more favorable market conditions, or to drop a property because it is not economically viable.

An adaptive process control system was installed in Cortez Gold Mines Mill #2 Grinding Plant in Nevada. The installation, commissioning, and testing of the system took approximately 80 manweeks, but final test results show that the system paid for itself through increased throughput within two weeks of commissioning. Both crisp and fuzzy rules are used in the expert rule base which is also integrated with continually adapting neural network models. The expert rules and models are used by predictors, and optimizers to allow the control system to provide optimum process performance under continually varying feed conditions. The selection, installation, rule and predictor configuration, and statistically verifiable testing of the control system in the Cortez Gold Mines Mill #2 Grinding Plant is described in the paper.

Introduction The purpose of this paper is to present a procedure used by the authors for evaluating and designing soil liner systems. This method is particularly valuable in evaluating various treatment schemes for chemically amended soil liners. A tabulation of laboratory test results on various soil types are presented to quantify the effectiveness of certain treatments. A typical liner design program includes developing and proving soil borrow sources, designing the cross-section of the liner system, developing construction specifications, and providing construction services to ensure the intended product is achieved. Material Source Development The first step in designing a soil liner is to identify and evaluate suitable borrow sources within an economical haulage range. This is best done in a two step approach: a reconnaissance level investigation to identify target areas and a detailed evaluation of those targets. Reconnaissance: The goal of the preliminary investigation is to locate potential borrow sources for liner quality soils. This includes all natural materials which can be compacted, chemically treated, or otherwise amended to yield an installed permeability at or below some target value. This requires utilization of all available data sources: Soil Conservation Service, BLM, aerial photos, USGS geologic maps, and project geologist records. The goal at this stage is to locate shallow deposits of favorable soil types. The Unified Soil Classification System provides an excellent first pass grouping. Clays, clayey sands and silts are the most favorable soil types, although silty sands and occasionally clayey gravels can make excellent liners, and are often amenable to chemical modification. The lowest permeabilities are generally achieved with CH, CL and MH soils. Once preliminary targets have been identified using visual examination, laboratory classification tests should be performed to further refine the selection. Testing at this stage should include gradation, plasticity and hydrometer analyses. Additionally, "preg-rob" testing should be done as early as practical. Preg-rob is a phenomenon where gold or silver ions in solution associate with the clay, or other, minerals. When this occurs, a portion of the gold or silver leached from the ore is actually tied-up by the clay and thus a reduces recovery. Testing for this consists of agitating a small sample of the soil in a solution containing dissolved gold or silver, preferably of similar chemical make-up as the solution which will contact the actual liner. The solution and soil are assayed before and after agitation to determine loss to the clay. A reliable estimate of the hydraulic conductivity, commonly referred to as permeability, can be developed from the D10 value by the use of Hezen&apos;s formula: K = 100 (D1012 This relationship is limited to soils where the finer particles do not move due to the force of flowing water (i.e.: "hydrodynamic stabilitym)(1). Additionally, the effect of platty particles on permeability is not as predictable as the effect of equidimensional particles. D10 is the sieve opening size at which 10% of the material is finer. Plasticity is also important from several standpoints. Constructability is directly related to plasticity. Very plastic clays and non-plastic silts both tend to be difficult soils, while medium plastic clays and clayey sands are generally very desirable. Post construction performance is also related to plasticity (e.g. swelling, shrinkage cracking, frost heave, etc.). Additionally, low plasticity silts and silty sands generally do not respond well to chemical amendment. Source Development: The result of the reconnaissance evaluation should be an estimate of the relative probability of developing a suitable borrow source within an economical haul distance. Of course, "economical distance" depends on the degree of handling and treatment the borrow material requires, as well as the cost of synthetic alternatives. The purpose of the detailed investigation is to prove out quantity and quality of material sources, and determine design parameters such as degree of compaction, mixing, treatment and thickness of liner. The emphasis of the testing program should be permeability and strength. Strength becomes increasingly important as the slope of the liner and the height of the heap increase. A slurry 1s a mixture of solid particles In water, or a chemical solution, that behaves like a liquid. The design of slurry transportation systems is generally analagous to pumping and piping water, but with a few notable exceptions: • The interaction of particle on particle affects slurry transport. • Particles often interact with the fluid, particularly when chemicals have been added to the system. • Particles have a frustrating tendency to settle from the slurry suspension, especially into locations not considered In the design. • Solids have an affinity for wetted surf aces and tend to wear them away. In order to ascertain the environmental fate of flotation reagents (fatty acids, fuel oils, and amines) associated with phosphate rock processing with confidence, it was necessary to first establish laboratory methodologies to identify and quantify flotation reagents. This approach was necessitated by the fact that the reagents used in the flotation process are either reclaimed or by-products of other industries and is dictated by their cost. Initially, several blind performance evaluation samples were prepared by spiking water samples with known amounts of either single reagents or reagent mixes and then analyzed. Reagent recovery for the blind performance evaluation samples was within acceptable limits for similar compounds established by the US Environmental Protection Agency. Averification process involving the use of standards and the refinement of analytical methods was utilized to develop standard operat- ing procedures (SOPS) and method detection limits (MDLs) specific to the identification and quantification of the flotation reagents used in the phosphate industry. These procedures and MDLs were critical to support the project&apos;s primary goal of assessing the fate of selected flotation reagents in the environment.

Technological advances in mining equipment and data acquisition at the Eagle Butte Mine in Gillette, Wyoming result in productivity gains and increased maintenance awareness. A new overburden haulage truck fleet with an onboard payload and fault monitoring system interacts via telemetry with the loading shovel and PC&apos;s located in production and maintenance offices, enabling staff to monitor production and maintenance on a real-time basis. This paper will describe the system and highlight the benefits realized as a result of its implementation.

The US Bureau of Mines con¬ducted research on underground stope leaching of metalliferous ores. Leaching underground would minimize the environmental impact of ore processing on the surface and would maximize minable reserves. An important aspect of this process is the minimization of pregnant solution losses and groundwater contamination by leach solutions. Bulkhead design and construction are important issues for solution control and stope-leaching economics. A reinforced-concrete bulkhead was designed, constructed and tested for solution control in an underground mine near Idaho Springs, CO. This paper presents the bulkhead-design methodology and construction procedure.

Willowstick has successfully employed a new Seismic Acoustic Resonance (SAR) method to improve seepage characterization through, beneath, and around dams. SAR is a passive seismic method that detects zones of higher permeability in the foundation and fill materials of a dam. Just as the ocean has tides, the earth’s crust experiences daily “Earth Tides” and is constantly in motion. Continual motion produces resonance signals that can be measured, interpreted, and modeled to identify zones of higher permeability within a dam and its foundation. The SAR results are analyzed in conjunction with the traditional Willowstick Method to better characterize seepage flow paths and patterns trough, beneath, or around a dam in three dimensions. When both methodologies, which use entirely different scientific principles, identify the same anomalous feature, a higher degree of confidence is gained in the results of the investigation. Willowstick has effectively utilized the SAR method on many successful dam seepage investigations. The two geophysical techniques when used in parallel have yielded complimentary results, with both methods providing beneficial information about seepage locations. This paper will detail seepage flow paths identified using both Willowstick and SAR methods for two case study tailings dams in Canada and the United States.

There is an increasing requirement for geophysical surveys carried out during geotechnical investigations to provide direct information about rock quality or other geotechnical parameters. With the paucity of information to correlate geophysical results with actual rock properties, this is still difficult to achieve and additional research effort needs to be performed to address this issue. Nowadays, several researchers have been described detailed studies which designed specifically to investigate this matter. Generally, geophysical techniques which are used to estimate seismic velocities in the subsurface focus on the low strain levels that are not large enough to induce significant nonlinear, nonelastic stress-strain behavior (Luna and Jadi, 2000), which is normally evaluated when addressing liquefaction potential of soils in the shallow subsurface. Soil parameters relevant to seismic ground response (Rechtien, 1996) are density, relative density and void ratio, permeability, shear modulus, water saturation, soil fabric and stress history. Detailed characterization of elastic properties near a major construction site (e.g. a bridge) is useful for near field dynamic analysis of soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects. The coupled effect of the bridge foundation (piles, piers or abutments) and the soil immediately surrounding these substructure elements is essential for dynamic SSI analysis of these critical bridge structures. This paper presents a geophysical investigation performed along the under construction highway of Egnatia Odos, approximately 13 km west from the town of Xanthi in N. Greece. Twelve geotechnical boreholes, drilled at the maximum depth of 75 m, approximately located 20 m from the Nestos River. The objective of the survey was to obtain the high-resolution compressional and shear wave velocities of the shallow subsurface for computation of elastic engineering properties of the unconsolidated material interposed between the investigated boreholes. Joint interpretation of borehole logs and velocity images obtained by P- and S-wave traveltime inversions outlined shallow geological anomalies.

Over the past two decades, declining ore body grades and increased operating and construction costs have provided an incentive for the development of progressively larger flotation machines. As a result, the 1.7-2.8 m3 (60-100 cu ft) flotation machine of the 1950&apos;s and 1960&apos;s is being rapidly replaced by large volume machines. The result has been improved flotation machine specific capacity (tph processed per sq ft of floor space); specific power (hp per tph processed); and process control simplicity. The recent development and satisfactory plant evaluation of the 28 m3 (1000 cu ft) flotation machine allows economic and operating advantages in high tonnage mill applications. Some principles of mechanically induced air flotation and the development of the large 28.3 m3 (1000 cu ft) flotation machine are reviewed here. Performance evaluation in beneficiating metalliferous ores-copper, zinc, and iron-is also given and recently completed plant results provided. Mining lower grade ore bodies results in the need to process increased tonnage in the concentrator. This greater tonnage requires more individual flotation machines, unless individual machine capacity, or cell volume, is increased. As the ore processing rate of the concentrator increases, the benefits of progressively larger individual cells in the flotation section become more significant. The accompanying figure illustrates the advantages of a larger flotation machine. In the figure, the number of machines in the rougher-scavenger section is related to the plant tonnage for three sizes of flotation machine: 8.5 m3 (300 cu ft), 14.2 m3 (500 cu ft), 28.3 m3 (1000 cu ft). The 28.3 m3 (1000 cu ft) flotation machine results in 95 fewer machines, compared to the 8.5 m3 (300 cu ft) machine at 45.4 kt/d (50,000 stpd) feed. The flotation cell reduction is, of course, doubled at a plant production rate of 90.7 kt/d (100,000 stpd). Using fewer flotation machines saves floor space. The 14.2 m3 (500 cu ft) and the 28.3 m3 (1000 cu ft) machines result in a floor area reduction, relative to the 8.5 (300 cu ft) machine requirements, of 134.7 and 418.1 m2 (1450 and 4500 sq ft), respectively, for the 45.4 kt/d (50,000 stpd) rate and 269.4 and 836.1 m2 (2900 and 9000 sq ft), respectively, for the 90.7 kt/d (100,000 stpd) rate. In addition, flotation practice has shown that the "specific power intensity"-power per unit cell volume-is less for increased cell size. This results in a power draw reduction, for the rougher-scavenger circuit, of between 552 and 686 kW (740 and 920 hp) for the 14.2 and 28.3 m3 (500 and 1000 cu ft) machines, respectively, when processing 90.7 kt/d (100,000 stpd). Fewer cells improve machine control and simplify maintenance needs while reducing floor space and power requirements. These are tangible incentives for the development of large flotation machines for high tonnage applications. Flotation Principles The accompanying figure shows how key hydrodynamic regions influence the performance of a mechanically induced air flotation machine. Air is induced into the fluid from the top of the cell, due to the mechanical action of a rotating impeller. The impeller circulates the liquid, or pulp, from the bottom of the cell. The result of these dual flow paths is the mixing of the two fluids and one solid phase in the highly agitated region where physical contact between the air bubbles, and the solid particles to be floated, is accomplished. Introduction Soda ash is known chemically as sodium carbonate, an important inorganic chemical. It has been produced for several centuries by processing certain vegetation and minerals. The US soda ash industry has evolved from several small sodium carbonate mining operations in the West. Now, a nucleus of six companies produce about one-fourth of the world&apos;s annual soda ash output US producers currently dominate the world market. But certain international events are occurring that will reshape the domestic soda ash industry in the next decade. Historical perspective Soda ash is used mainly in the manufacture of glass, soap, dyes and pigments, textiles, and other chemical preparations. All of these are the first basic consumer products produced by developing societies. About 3500 BC, the Egyptians became the first society to use crude soda ash. The soda ash was used to make glass containers. It was most likely obtained from dried mineral incrustations around alkaline lakes. Soda deposits were virtually nonexistent in western Europe. So people resorted to burning seaweed to obtain the ashes. The ashes were then leached with hot water and the solute was recovered after evaporating the solution to dryness. The solute, a crude "soda ash" was impure. But, it could be used to make glass and soap. These two products and industries were important to the population and economic growth of the region. About 11.5 t (13 st) of seaweed ash was required to produce about 0.9 t (1 st) of soda ash. Along the coasts of England, France, and Spain, seaweeds with varying alkali contents became important items of commerce and sources of soda ash before the 18th century. The LeBlanc process used salt, sulfuric acid, coal, and limestone. It became the major method of production from about 1823 to 1885. In the early 1860s, Ernest and Alfred Solvay, two Belgian brothers, successfully commercialized an ammonia-soda process to synthesize soda ash. It used salt, coke, limestone, and ammonia. The Solvay process produced a better quality product than the LeBlanc method. In 1879, Oswald J. Heinrich presented to the Baltimore meeting of AIME, a paper entitled "The manufacture of soda by the ammonia process." The paper compared the two processes and foretold the demise of the LeBlanc technique. World production of soda ash in 1880 was 680 kt (750,000 st). Of that, 544 kt (600,000 st) was produced by the LeBlanc process. Of the 2.8 Mt (3.1 million st) of soda ash produced worldwide in 1913, only about 50 kt (55,000 st) was by the LeBlanc method. The LeBlanc process was never used successfully in the US, except for a brief period from July 1884 to January 1885 in Laramie, WY. Previously, soda ash had been produced by burning certain plants, as exemplified by the early Jamestown colonists, or by recovering small quantities of natural sodium carbonate found in alkaline lakes, such as those found near Fallon, NV, and Independence Rock, WY. Before the 1884 startup of the first synthetic soda ash plant in the US at Syracuse, NY, most of the domestic soda ash demand in the East was met by imports, primarily from England. Large-scale commercial production of natural soda ash began in California in 1887 from surface crystalline material at Owens Lake. Production from sodium carbonate-bearing brines at Searles Lake began in 1927 (Fig. 1). In 1938, during exploration for oil and gas in southwestern Wyoming, a massive buried trona deposit, presumably the world&apos;s largest, was accidentally discovered. Recent mineral resource evaluation by the US Geological Survey and the US Bureau of Mines indicates that the Wyoming trona deposit contains 86 Gt (93 billion st) of identified trona resource in beds 1.2 m (4 ft) thick or greater. Additionally, there is about 61 Gt (67 billion st) of reserve base trona. Of this 36 Gt (40 billion st) is in halite-free trona beds and 24 Gt (27 billion st) is in mixed trona and halite beds. In 1953, the Food Machinery and Chemical Corp. (later shortened to FMC Corp.) became the first company to mine trona in Wyoming. Soda ash demand increased.

This paper describes the project implementation from financing, through the engineering and construction phases, mine and process plant commissioning as well as operating experience realized to-date. The single line flowsheet used to process the lateritic nickel ore to a 75 percent nickel matte is presented with emphasis on the main pyrometallurgical operations. These include a rotary dryer, a unique reduction kiln, a 45 000 kVA electric furnace and two Pierce-Smith type converters. Associated infrastructure facilities and services necessary to sustain the 11 300 tonnes (12 500 short tons) per year nickel production rate are also described.

Electronic ore sorting is a coarse particle beneliciating process which performs a function which in the past was primarily achieved through the use of hand picking belts. Photometric ore sorting is capable of separating waste from mineral bearing rock having a distinct difference in surface light reflectance levels. This type of ore sorter can be applied to gold and silver ores which are contained in quartz veining. Photometric ore sorting has been used at gold mines in South Africa as well as the Black Pinc silver mine in Montana. A new ore sorter has recently been developed with precious metal ores in mind. This ore sorter is capable of sorting ores on both photometric and conductivity sensing parameters. The first production machine has been installed at a gold mine near Beardmore, Ontario and currently is being used to process low grade waste dumps.

Less than optimum production in mining always results when poorly blasted material is provided at loading points. More often than not the cause is due to blasting founds that fail to fully control and utilize explosive energy. In many cases the problem exists because too few blasters understand how blastholes actually break rock and recognize that blasting is a three-dimensional process in designing their blasts. To better understand how blasts can be more effectively designed the two major rock breakage processes are described. In addition, the respective contributions of the borehole and detonation pressures are defined as are the specific roles of the several important blasting design variables. The concept of stiffness as an engineering principle and its significance in blasting design is introduced for explaining the breakup of rock. Basic guidelines for affecting control over fragmentation and side effects like over-break are offered.

Mining was the first economic activity carried out in Cuba, by the colonial conquerous, i.e. gold extraction from rivers and use of asphalt to calk their ships; however, due to different historic reasons only a limited development took place in this field during the colonial domination. During the republican period beginning early in this century, other interests lead to a larger scale exploitation of some known deposits. From the beginning of the century up to the triumph of the Revolution in 1959, not less than the following figures were extracted of some Cuban minerals: Refractory Chromium 3,300,000t Manganese 7,650,000 t Copper 9,000,000 t Iron 22,000,000 t Nickel 150,000 t (Ni oxide and sulphide These productions were practically directed to cover the demands of the U.S., industry and some-times these Cuban ores were almost the sole suppliers of the market.
