An investigation of the oxidation reactions of two industrial copper mattes was performed using dflerential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) at heating rates of 20°C and 8°C/min, respectively. The temperature of incipient reaction, the total exothermic and endothermic heats of reaction and the weight change during the oxidation process were measured as functions of the oxygen concentration in the oxidizing gas, matte grade and matte particle size. The temperatures of incipient reaction measured from the DSC experiments were found to increase monotonically with all three input variables. TGA experiments showed that Cu2O and CuO CuSO4 are formed before the complete oxidation of Cu2S to CuO.

Machine learning in the form of artificial neural networks was applied to investigate whether specimen load evolution can be predicted as a function of acoustic emission (AE) signals in the case of three-point bending (TPB) marble specimens instrumented with piezoelectric sensors. The ultimate objective of this study is to develop a model that can quantify rock behavior under loading that can lead to rock-failure prediction in underground structures subjected to bending, such as roof failure in development or production openings.

Development of process control in the metallurgical industry over the past ten years has been highly influenced by technical advances centered on use of computers as well as on measurement and associated equipment. The discussion in this section reviews advances in computer technology, measurement devices, data input-output techniques, and their use in mineral processing for the objective of guiding application of process control principles. Advances in the next ten-year period through the 1980's can be foreseen in the cost and application of data handling facilities in the coincident fields of data processing equipment, interface and control devices, and computer programming systems. These will lead to greater acceptance in a widely expanding range of mineral processing fields. It can be predicted that process control methods now known to be effective will become more re- fined. Costs of on-stream analyzers for assays and particle data will be reduced. Continued innovation can be anticipated in measurement devices required for effecting control. Control techniques developed over the last decade in key process operations such as crushing, grinding, flotation, smelting, and hydrometallurgical processes are described in the following chapters. The general forms taken by computer process control are first outlined briefly.

The cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis are located side by side on a double loop in the Mississippi River near the eastern boundary of Minnesota. Both cities lie on both sides 'of the Mississippi River, which in this region describes an S-shaped curve. The two cities together have a population of over 600,000 people, gathered in an area which has grown to be a single urban district inasmuch as the two cities have expanded until they occupy all the territory formerly between them, though the business centers are ten miles apart. St. Paul is located at the head of navigation on the Mississippi River and Minneapolis, farther upstream, at the Falls of St. Anthony. A recent water¬power development below the Falls of St. Anthony, constructed by the Federal Government, has at the same time made possible navigation to the foot of St. Anthony Falls through a lock around the dam which replaces the former rapids. Minneapolis, in 1920, had a population of 380,000 people, and St. Paul, 235,000. The two cities occupy land at an elevation of 700 to 900 feet above sea level. The average elevation is slightly less at St. Paul. Minneapolis has nearly 4,000 acres of parks and park¬ways, while St. Paul has nearly 2,000.

The integrity of unconventional shale gas well casings positioned in the abutment pillar of a longwall mine could be jeopardized by longwall-induced deformations. Under such scenarios, the surrounding fracture networks could provide pathways for gas flow into the mine, creating safety concerns. To provide recommendations for developing guidelines that ensure a safe coexistence of longwall mining and unconventional shale gas production, this study uses a discrete fracture network (DFN) model to evaluate the impact of parameters that could affect potential shale gas flow into the mine in the event of a casing breach. These parameters are evaluated using a conceptualized DFN realization that is representative of the fractured zone in the overburden, and the range of parameter variations are within values validated with field measurements.

Williams Mine was considering spending a large amount of capital to install a pumping system underground to rid the mine of slimes; with the introduction of Delvo Stabilizer this challenge would be met. This paper will address the process to introducing the Delvo Technology into the Cemented Roddill Program. Some areas that were worked on included: testing of the mix design, bet dosage rate for an economical solution, temperatures at different levels of the mine, the amount of time needed once the grout was put to sleep, preventing plugs in the delivery system A controlled dosage that gave the Operator a 12 hour window of flowable material was developed and an added feature to the introduction of Delvo was also noted; an increase in MPa strength over the design. Collectively with the help of operators at the batch plant and the underground miners involved with the program all concerns where addressed and all goals met. A cost effective program was implemented thus increasing productivity, preventing costly plugs, and improved the actual maintenance on the entire delivery system, which included the batch tanks, aggitator tanks, all pumps required in the system and of course reducing buildup of slimes at the cones.

The present study introduces a new approach to understand the copper dissolution rate and to find an adapted mathematical statement for particle shrinkage rate in a batch bioleaching system. Four size classes of a chalcopyrite concentrate, namely [D1 : (−54 + 44)μm, D2 : (−44 + 38)μm, D3 : (−38 + 25)μm and D4 : (−25)μm], were used in the batch bioleaching tests by applying a mixed culture of moderately thermophilic microorganisms. The pulp density and temperature were 8 (%w/v) and 50 °C, respectively. Findings delineated that the bioleaching time can be divided into two specific time intervals: first, the surface reactions were the prevailing controlling step; second, the prevailing mechanism was diffusion through the product layer, whereas the overall rate of the process may be related to both through a Q factor using a mixed model. A mathematical model was developed based on particle size distribution (PSD) and a kinetic model. Experimental validation of the mixed model was accomplished by the representative sample with d80 = 54 microns. Results showed that the PSD of the specific sample was in good agreement with Rosin–Rammler function. Besides, the simulation result of the conversion fraction had the best conformity with the experimental data (with a maximum error of approximately 7%). This paper should be considered as an initial part of a larger, global model for chalcopyrite concentrate bioleaching.

5.1 TECHNOLOGY FOR INJECTING GROUT INTO BOREHOLES The grouting of fractured rock aquifers is carried out in separate stopes' whose size is determined by the hydro¬stratigraphy and the hydrogeologic properties of the rocks. The number of grouting stopes required depends on the number of intervals in the hydrogeological section. Each grouting stope can include one or several aquifers. Com¬bining several water-producing strata into one stope is pos¬sible only when the values of their permeability coefficients are very similar. In order to achieve efficiency, as many aquifers as possible are included in each stope. In practice, the length of a grouting stope in a borehole usually ranges within 10 to 40 m, but occasionally up to 100 m or more. When conducting grouting operations through boreholes drilled from the face of underground workings, the stope's size can be determined by the thick¬ness of each fractured zone (fault) or by the length of the hole if the entire rock is fractured. Injecting grout into separate intervals of fractured rock can be done from the bottom to the top with ascending stopes or from the top to the bottom with descending stopes. Injection from bottom to top is always preferred. Injection also can be accomplished in separate fractured permeable horizons in the section. The STG integrated grouting method is based on the use of packer and injection equipment and technological schemes that facilitate injection in highly isolated fractured aquifers. For this purpose STG has developed a standard series of packers. 5.1.1 INJECTING GROUT THROUGH BOREHOLES DRILLED FROM THE SURFACE Grout can be injected according to one of four techno¬logical schemes depending on the depth of the fractured aquifers, their hydrogeologic properties and the availability of grout injection equipment if the area is remote (Fig. 43). In the first and most preferred technological scheme (1), the grout is injected from the bottom up with ascending stopes. When this scheme is employed, grouting holes are drilled to the entire projected depth based on the field investigations injection tubes is installed above the top of the first hydrostratigraphic unit to be grouted. This scheme al¬lows the grout to be injected only into the permeable stra¬tum or strata isolated by the packer near the bottom of the hole; it precludes the need to clean or redrill the hole before injecting grout into the next overlying stope. This ascending stope scheme is preferred because of its simplicity and ef¬ficiency. It is used in most of the grouting of saturated fractured rock for the purpose of isolating aquifers while excavating deep mine shafts in the USSR. The second technological scheme (II in Fig. 43) injects the grout in sequence from top to bottom with descending stopes. Injection under this scheme is accomplished through the hermetically-sealed mouth of the hole. It is most advis¬able to grout with descending stopes in saturated fractured rock wherein the aquifers constitute thick networks of frac¬tures. Under these conditions it is practically impossible to drill a grout hole to the entire depth of the underground workings due to the large production rate of ground water. In conducting isolation operations with descending stopes, additional work (relative to ascending stopes) is necessary to drill out the grout in order to create and inject the next stope. As a result, the total amount of drilling required to drill out grout can even exceed the volume of drilling of original rock. Consequently it is advisable to use this inefficient scheme only for injecting grout into holes that contain prolific frac¬tured aquifers at depths less than 150 to 200 m. The third and fourth technological schemes (III and IV in Fig. 43) are used in the selective grouting of separate aquifers. For example, these methods would be applied when a grout hole is drilled to its entire depth, wherein grouting of the upper aquifers must be done first so that the sinking of the first shaft can begin prior to deeper grouting. The third technological scheme is used for the selective injection of grout into an aquifer with a thickness of up to 5 m. For this work the DAU-1-2 removable dual packer is installed. It is lowered into the borehole on an injection pipeline. For aquifers with thicknesses of more then 5 m, the selective injection of the grout is carried out according to the fourth technological scheme; a combination of the DAU-2 hydrodynamic plug and the DAU-1 packing device is used. In order to implement this injection scheme, the DAU-2 hydro-dynamic plug is installed at the bottom of the fractured aquifer and the DAU-1 packer is installed at the top of the aquifer.

Pneumatic, triboelectrostatic processing of physical mixtures containing fine (-200 mesh) particulate may have significant application potential in the mining and energy industries. Such dry processing methods, especially for finely comminuted materials, have not been examined in as much detail as wet processing methods nor have been part of the training or education of mining and process engineers. We have examined fundamental and applied physical and engineering factors controlling triboelectrostatic beneficiation of fine-sized physical mixtures, one of which - combustion fly ash - has size, heterogeneity and mineral concentrations typical of those expected in mined minerals. The applicability of dry processing, however, cannot be readily evaluated because of the unavailability of standard procedures for process assessment.

Rockburst is defined as a sudden and violent explosion of rock on the surface of a rock excavation. Rockburst has been regarded as the least understood and most feared hazard problem for underground rock excavations. Traditionally, rockbursts were classified into the strain, pillar, and fault-slip categories. However, rockbursts are also known to occur at stress levels well below the rock yield strength, in mines where the rock is far from brittle, or without the presence of geological discontinuities. A plausible explanation of rockbursts is buckling, which has been identified as one of the main mechanisms for rockbursts. It is observed that rockbursts are often induced by dynamic loadings (pulses) from adjacent blasting. Therefore, the present paper studies the effect of pulse shape and amplitude on pillar rockbursts induced by dynamic loadings from blasting using the method of numerical analysis. The governing equation of a pillar’s motion is set up and the mechanism of pillar rockbursts is investigated through a practical example. The results show that it is not the shape of a pulse but the impact energy to decide the occurrence of pillar rockbursts. If all other parameters remain the same, pillar rockbursts are more likely to occur when the pulse duration is longer. The parametric resonance and the perturbation of dynamic loadings are also found to play an important role in the occurrence of rockbursts. These insights would provide invaluable clues about the mechanism and for better control of pillar rockbursts.

The US Bureau of Mines (Bureau) is conducting research to evaluate the potential for developing an in situ leach mining process that will selectively extract manganese from oxide ores, leaving gangue relatively undisturbed. To accomplish this, a geochemical approach based on deposit-specific information, such as mineralogy and geology, is used to constrain the operating parameters of the system. Among the studies being conducted are: • leaching experiments to define reaction mechanisms and kinetics, • detailed petrologic characterization at the microscopic scale to assess manganese distribution and leaching efficiencies, • deposit characterization and evaluation, and • development of potential manganese recovery schemes. Data from these studies are being used to develop engineering design information for an in situ mining process. Specific details of the Bureau's research project are discussed, including results obtained to date.

The Carson Hill mine in Calaveras County, California, was explored and developed by Grandview Resources Inc., as an open-pit heap-leached operation, with production commencing in the fall of 1986. Grandview entered the district in 1983 after a 40-year period of quiescense, the initial contact being by Barden Stevenot, V.F. Hollister, and J.J. Crowhurst. The last dividend declared by the Carson Hill Gold Mining Corp. was 3 1/2$ per share paid in January 1943. The mine was originally discovered in August 1848 by Jim Carson. Preceding the entry by Grandview in 1983, Cyprus Mines explored Carson Hill in 1975, and drill exposed a mineral inventory of 7.3 Mt (7,982,000 tons) averaging 1.4 g/t (0.040 oz per ton) gold. From that time until the Grandview entry, R.W. Thomssen and B.E. Stevenot continued investigations into the potential of the deposit. Grandview successfully investigated many of the metallurgical problems involved with heap leaching the ore. Metallurgical investigations were con- cluded under the direction of R.S. Shoemaker. By November 1984, J.A.C. Ross had prepared a prefeasibility report that included the earliest Grandview investigations. This report concluded that the deposit contained at least 6.8 Mt (7,440,000 tons) of ore that average 1.5 g/t (0.045 oz per ton) gold and that this ore could be mined with a 2: 1 stripping ratio. A final feasibility report was prepared by D.W. Pringle in September 1985. It showed a final ore reserve of 14.7 Mt (16,160,000 tons) of 1.7 g/t (0.049 oz per ton) gold. Attached is a description of the geology of the deposit from an internal report covering Cyprus activity in 1975 and a brief portion of USBM IC 6940 (1937). "Keep calm and carry on mining. That has long been the conventional wisdom in the mining industry, a largely cyclical one that has weathered roller-coaster booms and busts. But in the years from 2002 to 2016, an unprecedented steep rise in commodities prices that lasted a decade and then took a sharp turn downward had made it hard for gold and silver miners to stay the course.“The last 15 years highlighted some of the structural and inherent challenges that our industry has, from product price uncertainty to long lead times to the capital intensity of our business,” said Mitchell Krebs, president and chief executive officer of Coeur Mining, who was the luncheon speaker at the American Exploration & Mining Association’s 122nd Annual Meeting held Dec. 5-9, 2016, in Reno, NV.Looking back, Krebs said, “We were given this enormous gift of a commodities super cycle, and the industry kind of blew the opportunity.” While gold prices rose 319 percent and silver prices rose more than 200 percent over the 2002 to 2016 period, the XAU index of 30 gold and silver mining companies’ stock prices went up by only 20 percent.Entering 2016, precious-metals prices have made a comeback, with gold rallying strongly from a six-year low at the start of the year. This time, the industry is ready. Companies are leaner and meaner, with lower costs, reduced debt and an increased focus on higher grades and quality ounces. Although opportunities were missed in the past, the industry has got its act together and is now well positioned to take advantage of a price upswing and even to show profits when prices fall, as they did in August 2016, pushed down by a strong dollar."

From the perspective of a large mining company the comminution circuit design is worth keeping within the boundaries of the organisation. The correct circuit design begins from the understanding of the role of grinding. Grinding is a link only in the long "comminution chain," starting from solid rock and ending at the concentrating stage. The final target in comminution is to take a part in the maximization of Net Smelter Return, which goal provides the simultaneous considering of capital costs, operating costs and the economic effect of process results. As a general rule there will be a single crushing stage only, ahead of the grinding process. Grinding does not use any metallic grinding media at all, and there will be fine crushing for critical material in the grinding circuit. Grinding has a minimum two stages, besides, at many concentrators middling products and quite often also tailings are reground.

After some decades of lying low and being treated as a second rate fuel, coal is back in the news. Production is rising. Predictions are for an ever expanding use, and they differ only in their rates of increase. Even the FBI is involved in trying to stop fraudulent sales of non-existent coal lands and leases to the innocent. In short, we have a nearly chaotic boom on our hands. Obviously our energy production base is in the process of undergoing a major shift, and the process will present many problems. However, there is little doubt that the industry has the basic strength and organization to be able to deal with the new issues that will arise as a result of these shifts in production and use of coal. After all, it does produce nearly 800 M tpy now, and coal is the single biggest fuel for generation of electricity. This role of coal is illustrated in the table below, which shows the coal equivalent quantities of various fuels used in the production of electricity.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) constructed four passive biochemical reactor systems (BCRs) to treat mining influenced water (MIW) in the Bunker Hill Superfund area near Coeur D?Alene, Idaho between 2002 and 2003. Initially, the BCRs operated very effectively. However, in the past couple of years, the zinc removal effectiveness of the four BLM BCRs has declined [1]. The central objective of this study was to characterize the microbial communities and substrate present within the BLM BCRs and to use these factors to propose strategies to promote sustained sulfate reduction levels. Microbial communities were characterized by quantifying total bacteria and sulfate reducing species. Substrate was characterized by quantifying the percent organic, acid soluble organic, acid insoluble organic, and bioavailable material within the BCR. The results suggest the depletion of bioavailable organic substrates is the primary cause of the decline in zinc removal and not the microbial community structure. The ability to assess the amount of bioavailable organic substrate and microbial community is important to the understanding of the sulfate reducing capacity of the BLM BCRs and developing strategies to facilitate performance enhancement of the current BLM BCRs. The characterization of organic substrate and microbial community structure are also important to improving design of future passive treatment systems for mining influenced waters.

Motorized Conveyor Pulleys contain all the traditional conveyor belt drive components inside the pulley. Light duty airport check in, grocery stores and food processing conveyors; requiring compactness, elimination of guarding and component containment have been using them for years. Portable Aggregate Processing Equipment require these features but with higher belt pulls and severe duty beyond the capacity of traditional components in a limited space. New materials, design technologies and automation; converging with safety issues, higher energy and operating costs; have created a pressing need. The challenge is to integrate new technologies and traditional components into a reliable, compact, conveyor belt drive system.

Using an instrumented laboratory high-pressure grinding rolls mill, the grinding force, gap dimension, mass flow rate and net mill power were measured for six coals and a crystalline quartz. A technique was developed to estimate the compressive stress-strain curves for compression of the materials in the mill plus the effects of elastic decompression. To reconcile the mill power and grinding pressure results, it was necessary to allow for the energy recovery on decompression. No clear correlation was obtained between the form of the stress-strain curves or the variation of specific mill power factor with the Hardgrove grindability index (HGI), although coals with the lowest and highest HGIs (i.e., 44 and 106) gave results significantly different from the other coals. Feeds below 140 mesh (105 µm) flowed more rapidly than coarser feeds and would not build up high grinding pressures. This indicated shearing and fluidlike properties rather than compression as a locked bed.

The recession that began in late 1980 has proved to be not only prolonged and severe, but in certain ways unique in its effect on the mineral industries among the periods of economic slowdown experienced in the Western world since the end of World War II. This time almost all minerals have been affected. In previous business turndowns, by contrast, some mineral sectors have with-stood economic adversity well. They experienced little or no adverse effect-thanks either to a strong secular expansion in the markets for their particular product or to specific factors that caused demand to be well maintained. For example, aluminum, molybdenum, and nickel are three metals that enjoyed extraordinary growth in applications during the years 1946-1973. These metals were little affected during the recessions that occurred in that era. Similarly, coal did not suffer a pronounced drop in sales in the 1974-75 turndown because, with the price of oil rising sharply, a switch away from oil and back to coal was clearly indicated for some energy-intensive applications. Oil itself was largely impervious to the ups and downs of the business cycle until very recently. And the precious metals, gold and silver, have often been regarded as benefiting from reduced economic activity because labor becomes more available, productivity rises, and operating costs diminish. In the current recession, however, no major mineral has escaped the broad trend. The secular growth factors that were previously so evident for aluminum, molybdenum, and nickel have disappeared, at least temporarily. The stable pricing behavior that previously characterized all three of these commodities has been replaced by extreme price weakness and apparent inability of the major producers to continue their roles as market leaders. Coal and oil both have suffered from a sharp drop in energy requirements. There are those who now anticipate a collapse of the market control over oil prices so clearly exercised by OPEC since 1973. If oil prices are no longer effectively controlled by the governments of the exporting countries, then coal prices are also certain to be affected. And the combination of high interest rates, tight money, and a change in public perceptions of precious metals put the skid under gold and silver quotations in 1981 and early 1982. Although inflation has been viewed as the scourge of most Western countries ever since the oil crises of 1973-74, prices-in constant dollars-of most minerals have not risen. On the contrary, with the exception of the precious metals and oil, for most minerals the prices that prevailed at the end of 1982 were close to the levels of the Great Depression of the 1930s in constant dollar terms. Table 1 compares prices for copper, lead, zinc, and aluminum at the end of 1982 with the average prices in 1934, stated in constant 1967 dollars. This emphasis on prices for mineral commodities reflects the fact that profits of mining enterprises vary directly with the level of prices. Manufacturing and retailing enterprises march to a different tune. They establish sales prices based on costs. Their profits tend to vary with volume. Commodities are for all practical purposes fungible, that is the advantages of known brands in marketing manufactured goods have little application in a commodity market. Thus the individual seller of minerals is unable to establish his sales prices. Except where a monopoly is present, he must sell at the going market. His option is to abstain from selling if he finds the price unremunerative. In past recessions, some mineral producers chose to do precisely that-either accumulating a substantial share of their output in inventory or, in prolonged downturns, abstaining from production. During the current recession, however, private-sector mining companies did not have the option of accumulating inventories to any great extent. Capital costs for new mineral projects or for expansion of existing facilities have escalated at an alarming rate since the early 1970s. Added to this has been the heavy cost of installing pollution control or safety equipment to comply with the regulations adopted in most industrialized countries (and particularly the United States) since 1968. The consequence has been that the financial position of most major mineral enterprises in mid-1980 was already strained. To finance increased inventories meant incurring additional funded debt at high interest costs, thus impairing the concern's credit rating. Management Choices Private-sector managements have had to face up to the alternative of either continuing to produce at an unchanged rate and marketing output at unremunerative prices or reducing output. By offering savings in space and capital cost compared to ducted axial and centrifugal fan systems, horizontally mounted jet fans are commonly used worldwide to ventilate vehicular tunnels. They discharge high-velocity jets to transfer momentum to the surrounding airstream to induce longitudinal flow in the same direction as the jet. Vertically mounted jet fans installed in exhaust shafts have been successfully used to ventilate a large passenger rail overbuild in New York City. A comparison of shaft dimensions, vertical placement of the jet fans and measured shaft airflows is presented to evaluate optimum jet fan configurations. Measured shaft airflows are compared to airflows predicted by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of a three-dimensional model of the overbuild.
