The conventional role or exploration, development and grade control is examined in this paper within the context of the many and varied types of gold occurrences which are found at the Dome Mine. The account endeavours to trace the development of the total ore evaluation process, from diamond drilling through the exploration and drifting stage, to the stope development and planning phase of the operation, with an emphasis on sampling techniques and assaying procedure. The concept of ore reserve calculations is developed and the practice of grade control is described. In summary, the role of the geological, the engineering and the mining department is presented in relation to the contribution each has to make in the evaluation and exploitation of ore from one of the world's classic Archean gold deposits.

The studied coal mi1e is an underground coal mine located in the northern Wasatch Plateau of central Utah (Figure 1) . Since operation began in 1981, in situ stress conditions have been encountered which differ from the assumed conditions utilized during early mine design efforts. Geologic structures also varied somewhat from those projected during initial geologic interpretations of the area. The encountered geologic conditions combined with the unusual stress conditions prompted a combined study of in situ stress and stress-related geologic structures. The study was conducted in two phases, with phase 1 consisting of detailed underground mapping and analysis of stress-related geologic structures to determine stress orientations from which they originated; and phase 2, consisting of over- coring two sites within the mine to determine present in situ stress orientations and magnitudes. GEOLOGIC ANALYSIS Three types of geologic structures have been encountered in the mine that act as indicators of stress orientations of the geologic past. Two of these structures, faulting, and igneous dikes, are directly measurable in the mine. A third type of structure, photolineation, was detected through remote sensing methods and shoe god correlation to roof conditions in certain areas of the mine. Faults Two major orientations of faulting have been encountered in the studied coal mine, including a system of N 80 W striking normal faults and a system of N 55 to 70 W striking oblique-slip faults. Only data collected from the oblique-slip faults were used for this study due to the fact that these faults offset the N 80 W faults wherever the two systems intersect, indicating that the N 55 to 70 W system was created by a more recent stress field. Figure 2 shows locations within the mine where data were collected from seven locations along oblique-slip faults. Data collection consisted of measurement of fault plane strike and dip, fault slickenside trend and plunge, and slip direction. The data are tabulated in Table 1. The fault data were then plotted on stereo nets to determine the stress orientations present at the td of faulting (Figure 3). The determined stress orientations are 32~0 included in Table 1. The stereo net plots show average principal stress orientations of: 1) [ ] plunge 1 degree. These data suggest that the N 55 to 70 W oblique-slip faults were produced by a nearly

Approximately 30 miles east of Chicago on the southern shores of Lake Michigan stands Bethlehem Steel's newest fully integrated steelmaking facility - the billion dollar Burns Harbor plant. The initial phase of "green field" construction that began in 1963 was directed to the creation of high quality finishing facilities. In late 1964 the 160" plate mill came "on stream" followed closely by Sheet and Tin and Hot Strip facilities. Unit train shipments of slabs primarily from the Lackawanna plant located near Buffalo constituted the input materials for the new mills. In 1967 a hot metal facilities program was announced for Burns Harbor that at its completion would make the plant fully integrated. Incorporated within the program were: 1. A new high performance 50" x 96" slabbing mill complete with a battery of soaking pits. 2. A two vessel Basic Oxygen Furnace Shop. 3. (1) battery of 6 meter high Coke Ovens with attendant coal handling facilities. 4. A 3800 feet long vessel loading & unloading dock. 5. The first conveyor belt fed Blast Furnace in the United States. 6. An extensive materials handling system for receiving, stocking and reclaiming from storage the raw materials for the Blast Furnace and Coke Ovens operation. The intent of this paper is to provide a detailed description of the functions and components of the materials handling system noted above.

FOREWORD This paper is based on the authors' experience gained in the environmental assessment of major uranium projects in the former Department of Science and the Environment and Department of Home Affairs and Environment of the Australian Government. The views expressed in the paper are those of the authors alone and not the Australian Government or Dames & Moore. INTRODUCTION Uranium has been mined in Australia since 1954. A number of small scale mining and milling operations were active in the Northern Territory, in South Australia and in Queensland in the late fifties and early sixties. However, in the late sixties there was an increase in exploration activities in the expectation of an upsurge in world demand for uranium Substantial new resources were delineated in the Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia. The most significant deposits were located in the Northern Territory, in what is called the Alligator Rivers Region located approximately 200 km east of Darwin. The Region is in the latitude of 13° South and thus lies within the Australian tropics (Figure 1). It consists of approximately 2.3 million hectares of natural wilderness containing much spectacular and attractive scenery. The area is noted for its abundant wildlife, particularly the waterbirds that gather on the flood-plains. Much of the vegetation is diverse and interesting. The Aboriginal population still maintains elements of the traditional way of life, and the spectacular Arnhem Land escarpment contains many of the best surviving examples of Aboriginal rock art. Numerous rich archaeological sites provide evidence of continuous human habitation for tens of thousands of years. Climatically, the Region is of the tropical monsoon type with a dry season from may to September and a "wet" from November to March. High intensity short period rainfall is characteristic, and the average annual precipitation is in the order of 1 350 mm. The monthly mean temperature ranges from 25° to 30°C throughout the year. The development of regulatory controls on uranium mining in the Alligator Rivers Region has been affected by the political status of the Northern Territory. While Australia is a federation, established as an independent self-governing country in 1901, it was not until 1978 that the Northern Territory became to any real extent self-governing. Prior to 1978, the Territory was administered through a special department of the Commonwealth (ie. the Federal Government). Under the Northern Territory (Self Government) Act 1978, administrative powers similar to those possessed by the Governments of the six founding Australian states were provided to the Territory Government. However, the Commonwealth government did not transfer to the Territory all such powers and functions, and in particular there has been, since 1978, a dual role for the Commonwealth and Territory Governments in the regulation of uranium development. Details of this role are provided later in this paper. RANGER URANIUM INQUIRY By 1973, major deposits had been discovered in the Alligator Rivers Region at Nabarlek, Ranger, Koongarra and Jabiluka. The estimated reserves and mine life expectancy of these deposits are given in Table I. Other radioactive anomalies have also been identified in the area but, as yet, they have not been delineated or evaluated. [ ] In 1974, an agreement was signed between the Commonwealth Government and Peko Mines Limited and the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australia Limited for the joint development of the Ranger deposit. In July 1975, the Government announced a Commission of Inquiry under the provisions of the Commonwealth Environment Protection (Impact of Proposals) Act 1974, into the proposed Ranger development. The inquiry was known as the Ranger Uranium Environmental Inquiry or more commonly, the Fox Inquiry after the presiding Commissioner, Mr Justice Fox.

In efforts to improve ingress/egress from the existing subway platforms in PATH’s Exchange Place Station, a new 18-foot horseshoe cross-passage tunnel was constructed by Walsh Construction who retained Kilduff Underground Engineering for design of the initial support system and to install and maintain geotechnical instrumentation. The project presented some unique challenges as a result of the proximity to pedestrians on the platform. PATH service remained uninterrupted, limiting the Contractor to mechanical means of excavation to advance the heading. The logistics proved very challenging for the approximate 100-foot-long tunnel excavated in soft Manhattan Schist. This paper will present the design and construction challenges for the project.

US coal production increased 3% to a record 832 Mt (917 million st) in 1987, according to preliminary Energy Information Administration (EIA) data. Most of the increase was due to the unusually warm summer and the increased coal-fired electricity demand for air conditioning. Drought conditions in the Northwest lowered hydroelectric generation, contributing to the higher use of coal by electric utilities. However, excess production capacity and increased competition from natural gas added further downward pressure on delivered coal prices, continuing the declining price trend of the last several years. Coal production by region Appalachian coal production reached 402 Mt (443 million st) in 1987. This is about 3% more than in 1986 and just short of its 1984 peak. Virginia produced 7% more than its 1986 level, due to increased coal-based electricity demand. Smaller percentage increases were attained in eastern Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Ohio and Alabama were the only major coal-producing states in Appalachia that produced less coal in 1987 than in the previous year. In the Interior region, 1987 coal production reached a record 182 Mt (201 million st), about 2% above 1986. Illinois is the largest coal-producing state in that region. Production there fell about 3.7%, primarily because of lowered demand at electric utility plants in Alabama and Tennessee. However, this was more than offset by production increases in western Kentucky, Texas, and Indiana. After falling slightly in 1986, coal production in the West resumed its upward trend to a record 248 Mt (273 million st). Wyoming is that region's dominant coal producer. It mined 7% more coal than in 1986. Wyoming's increase offset the 11% decline in New Mexico production and smaller declines in other Western states. Coal consumption and prices Domestic coal consumption reached a record 759 Mt (837 million st) in 1987. Most of the increase resulted from the unusually warm summer that led to higher than normal peak demands for electricity in the third quarter. Electric utility coal consumption was also boosted by the below-normal hydroelectric generation that resulted from low water levels in the Northwest. These factors more than offset the effects of increased nuclear power generation and competition from natural gas. As a result, coal provided 56.9% of electric utility generation in 1987, compared with 55.7% in 1986. Electric utilities consumed a record 651 Mt (718 million st) of coal. While electric utility coal consumption increased, the average cost of coal to utilities was down, from $1.58 per million Btu in 1986 to $1.52 in 1987. The average price of coal delivered to utilities in 1987 was $35.09/t ($31.84 per st), the lowest since 1981. Coal prices were held down by a glut of coal supplies and by a decline in the average price of natural gas to electric utilities. Coal consumption at coke plants in 1987 was 2.6% above the 1986's 32.5 Mt (36 million st). This increase reflects steel's recent resurgence. Coking coal demand, though, was reduced by the increased use of continuous casting and electric furnace technologies. The average price of coal delivered to coke plants fell from $56.02 to $51.35/t ($50.83 to $46.59 per st). Coal consumption in the industries other than coke plants amounted to 68.2 Mt (75.2 million st) in 1987, slightly less than in 1986. Coal lost part of its market share to natural gas, which was priced favorably relative to coal. The average price of coal delivered to manufacturing plants was at its lowest level of the current decade. It fell from $39.50/t in 1986 to $37.27/t ($35.84 to $33.81 per st). Residential and commercial coal consumption fell to 6.2 Mt (6.9 million st) that is 9.8% below 1986 and the lowest since 1980. This decline is also attributed to the relatively low price of natural gas in 1987. Coal stocks Coal consumers held 169 Mt (186 million st) of coal stocks at the end of 1987, 5.9% above the 1986 year-end level. Most of this increase was due to stockpiling by electric utilities in anticipation of a possible strike by the United Mine Workers of America early in 1988. Stocks at electric utilities increased to an estimated 154 Mt (171 million st) at the end of 1987, 5.6% higher than the previous year. This was much lower than 1984's stock buildup. Coke plants increased their coal stocks by 30% in 1987 to 3.5 Mt (3.9 million st), rebounding from the unusually low inventories of 1985 and 1986. A comprehensive, site specific water management plan is of primary importance to the successful implementation, operation and decommissioning of any mining project. Formulation of a plan requires an orderly planning process consisting of identifying problems, establishing planning criteria based on the guidelines and requirements of regulatory agencies, and an iterative procedure of identifying, investigating, and evaluating plan elements and alternative plans. A typical uranium surface mine operation consists of a mine pit or pits, spoil pile areas, crusher, processing plant, and tailings disposal area. A water control plan addresses the problems of diversion of natural runoff from undisturbed areas around the mine; and diversion, collection, and treatment of runoff from within the mine area. A water control plan is required to determine the location and size of appropriate control and detention structures; their cost; and the schedule for permit activity, design, and construction. The plan must be formulated to meet the requirements of both the State and Federal regulatory agencies.

About 45-50% of the coal mined in the U.S. passes through coal preparation plants; east of the Mississippi River this number increases to about 75-80%. Although the cost for coal preparation is worthwhile to some, the coal industry faces the challenges of continuing downward pressure on the price of coal and the impact of new environmental regulations. Coal preparation, as commercially practiced today, is an effective process achieving 75-803 ash reduction, 15-8m trace element reduction, and 85-90% Btu recovery; it is less effective for pyrite reduction (35-70%), and on-line operating time (40-60%), and suffers from obsolete control systems. Methods will be discussed for reducing costs of coal preparation and improving the performance of coal preparation plants. Comments are included on equipment selection, especially for -28 mesh coal, and prep plant operation and control practices. Btu recovery, ash and pyrite reduction, fines processing including dewatering and slurry fuel use options are emphasized. Trace element removal and expert control systems for maximization of prep plant operation also will be highlighted.

Introduction The ability to evaluate the improvement resulting from the implementation of an automatic control system is essential to the Justification of its cost. This evaluation may occur after anew control system has been commissioned. In other cases an existing plant which is operated manually may be automated only In part in order to determine In ether the met of it should be. Finally. in some instances dynamic isolation my be used prior to installation of the control system to determine the strategy to be used or to evaluate the improvements In process performance expected from automatic control. This paper describes the development of a methodology for making these evaluations. In order to obtain an accurate assessment of Improvements In a short time, statistical methods can be employed. Mineral processing plant, are subjected to many types of both random and deterministic disturbances of various duration. The statistical method, available for process control at analysis are designed to counter the obscuring effects that random disturbances have on such as evaluation. The basis for evaluation and comparison is some freely chosen measures of process performance termed the performance index or objective function. The experimental data used to calculate the performance index should, if possible, be collected by alternately running a circuit Or plant with the two or more type, or control being tested ("serial testing”) or more preferably, by running two circuits with the two type, of control side by side ("parallel testing") . The performance index is a random variable so that when comparing two types of control, statistical hypothesis testing must be used. By testing s hypothesis statistically one accept, or reject, a (null) hypothesis [ ] concerning the mean or variance of one or more performance indices. For example, a hypothesis Ho might be that the mean of a performance index with stabilizing control is larger than with manual control. Defining a Performance Index The performance index, denoted by [ ] , is a measure by which alternative strategies or situations my be cam peered on either s technical or an economic basis (see Table 1). Technical measures are concerned with the effects of control on process variables or outputs or on the deviations of controlled variable, from their setpoints. For commotion circuit, important technical measures of performance are throughput, product fineness and the consumption of liners, media and electrical energy. For flotation circuits important technical .satires are recovery, grade and reagent consumption. Economic measure such a, cost and profit n usually determined from a combination of technical measures and are usually the final factor upon which a decision may be made, although a control system my achieve higher values of technical measure , the control effort expended my be of such magnitude that the economic measures, such as cost, are poor. Running Comparisons Comparison, between automatic and manual control are normally done with data obtained before and after control system Installation, unless ore characteristics remain the same during the period of data collection the results will be biased. By running the test circuit with the control system alternately turned on and curled off until all possible ore type, have been run through the circuit, unbiased result, can be obtained. This mode of testing is termed “serial testing.” An alternative and potentially more powerful and quicker made of testing is "parallel testing" in which two circuits, one with the type of control being tested and one without, arm run aide by side. In this type of testing both circuits process the same ore so that valid results occur sooner than with aerial testing. The data may be averaged before testing or the differences in the performance indices may first be calculated before averaging. However, the two circuits must be nearly identical in their mechanical characteristics otherwise differences other than the degree of control will bias the results. It mechanical differences exist than it my be necessary to adjust one or the circuits prior to testing. Sometimes it is possible to correct far mechanical differences based on Inherent efficiency calculations made with a model. Hypothesis Testing Once the data is collected, hypothesis fencing can be carried out to determine if the automatic control system has resulted in a statistically significant improvement. My topic today is future trends in compensation for the mining industry. I seldom get the chance to speak about a subject of such immediate interest to an audience, so I would like to make the most of this opportunity by telling you that everybody in this room will become rich beyond his wildest dreams in the next few years. I would like to open my talk that way, but in compensation, like everything else, there is a great gap between dreams and reality. Back to reality. When we talk about compensation, we?d better define our terms because the compensation is really an umbrella for five basic types of payment made to management personnel. Slide 1 identifies these elements of compensation.

Magma Copper Co.'s San Manuel solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX-EW) facility has operated since May 1986. The original facility had a design capacity of 22.6 kt/a (25,000 stpy) of electrowon copper cathode produced by processing pregnant leach solution from an open pit-heap leach operation. In 1988, the plant was expanded to 45.3 kt/ a (50,000 stpy) to incorporate processing in-situ leach solutions. This pager focuses primarily on the heap leaching area with regard to exploration, testing, feasibility, permitting, design and construction, and operating practices. Research using surfactant leaching aids to enhance copper recovery is also discussed.

The growing need for development of thinner, more erratic, or less easily- mined coals in the Appalachian region requires more detailed analysis of conditions and factors controlling or influencing deposition of these seams. The value of depositional modelling in evaluation of such coals has been demonstrated in many recent studies and publications. Such modelling may be applied to allow prediction of factors varying from regional coal occurrence trends to very local areas of seam discontinuities, but requires thorough utilization of all available types of data. Mapping of general depositional energies, as derived from basic geophysical and driller's logs, can be applied to specific prediction of coal occurrence, and projection of particular facies as representative of unique depositional features or conditions often proves more applicable to coal character delineation than does mapping of the coal itself. Depositional modelling and trend projection may also serve as a guideline in reserve classification and confidence-levels in reserve estimations.

Although fluorspar is considered an industrial mineral by usage and value, its geological occurrence and the mining and milling methods employed make it more akin to the non-ferrous metal ores. Likewise methods of exploration for it are more like those used in the search for lead and zinc, with which fluorspar is often mixed. In fact, it often takes the mixture of fluorspar, lead, zinc, plus maybe barite to add up to enough recoverable values to make the mineral an ore by definition. This is so true where the fluorspar portion is low grade, perhaps less than 25 percent. Until the development of modern steel milling in World War I times, the invention of aluminum smelting, and development of the fluorine chemical industry and air conditioning, there were few uses for fluorspar aside from ceramic fluxes in the flint glass industry and for uses as glazes for pottery and china. Pure fluorite crystals have long been admired as semi-precious and ornamental minerals of many delicate colors.

Effluents discharged from gold mills, and more recently from heap leaching operations, pose significant hazards to the environment if not properly managed prior to discharge. This paper describes the nature of wastewaters which must be treated, the treatment processes being applied in Canada and the capabilities of these methods in removing cyanide and metals. As a result of past practice the most common method of reducing cyanide in gold mill effluents remains that of natural degradation in tailings ponds. This method has proven capable of producing high quality effluents where large ponds and sufficiently long water retention times can be provided, but at many mines this has not been the case. Since 1981, as a result of these limitations there has been a strong move in Canada to chemically-based effluent treatment plants, particularly as additional processes became available. Canadian gold mills have become leaders in the use of chemical processes to remove cyanide, in terms of the variety of such processes in operation (five in total), the number of plant installations and the number of processes developed in this country. The hydrogen peroxide and Inco SO2-air processes, in that order, are being applied most widely. Alkaline chlorination, the initial process to be used fairly extensively has been almost totally replaced by the two methods mentioned above. Since a number of effective methods are now available for the treatment of gold mill effluents, the selection of a process for application at a specific mill requires careful consideration of:

The Jamaica Mining Legislation requires the bauxite companies operating in the island to reclaim all mined-out lands (except those legitimately excluded) to the level of agricultural or pastoral productivity, which existed prior to the commencement of mining. If it is not possible to reclaim a mined-out area the companies are required to reclaim an equivalent area of some other land which had not previously been used for agricultural purposes, or alternatively, pay to the government the sum of $120 (US) for every acre of land mined in the particular sector. In the seventeen years since the programme commenced the companies have in general chosen to reclaim most of the mined-out lands, rather than the cheaper alternative. However, the ultimate success of the programme will depend not only on actual reclamation per se but moreso the productivity of the rehabilitated lands. There are a number of reasons why the accent has to be placed on productivity of the lands. The first is that Jamaica is a small country (4,450 square miles) with a population of nearly 2 million people. Because of its mountainous terrain it is estimated that only 35% of the land area is cultivable in crops and pastures; hence this limited area, as well as that which can be reclaimed, must be made highly productive in order to support local and export demands. The Mining companies own over 200,000 acres of land, and of this acreage, it is conservatively estimated that about 75,000 will be affected by mining and will be reclaimed. As such, the use of the land after mining can have an important bearing on Jamaica's future agricultural productivity. INTRODUCTION The use of specialty chemicals In mining Is an Important consideration In determining the economic efficiency of a floatation plant. The plant metallurgist would like to maximize the recovery of valuable minerals while maintaining an acceptable grade product. The direct cost of the reagents, while significant, Is only a part of their economic effect. Reagents determine the flotation rates and the selectivity of the mineral separation. In flotation practice, mineral selectivity can be achieved through the addition of various reagents that can control the wettablllty of a particular mineral In the flotation pulp. The reagents which will generally optimize the flotation process are commonly classified Into three distinctive categories: collectors frothers and modifiers. Large tonnages of metal sulphide concentrates which are the source of most of the common base metals are produced economically by fairly standard flotation techniques. The advent of modern technology coupled with the necessity of processing finely disseminated and complex ores of low grade has Increased the need for utilization of non traditional and high selective chemicals reagents for the economic recovery of metals and raw materials. Mining operations in developing countries continue to progress at a rapid growth as many countries mine and process both metallic and nonmetallic ores. The total mine production of base metals, precious metals, Iron ores and coal In developing countries In Africa, Asia and South America has been much higher as compared to the western world production In terms of tonnage and dollar value. Global capital Investments In mining during 1991-95 Is $ 55.1 billion and It Is anticipated that the development of new and specialty reagents may be concentrated In the processing of aluminum , copper, precious metals and Industrial minerals with special reference to potash, phosphates, kaolin and silica sands.(1) The challenge for the design and development of new specialty chemicals Is dependent on Its cost performance and environmental acceptability. Information on the theory and application on the development of mining chemicals has been reviewed In several conference proceedlngs,(2-4) publications(5) and also discussed by several Individual authors.(1,6-10) These publications serve as a comprehensive reference source on the reagents used In several flotation processes. This paper discusses the present trend in the use of specialty mining chemicals In diversified mining operations on several mineral systems with particular reference to sulfide ore systems. The necessity to expose these specialty chemicals through aggressive marketing techniques In mining operations In many developing countries Is also presented. SPECIALTY CHEMICALS Specialty mining chemicals, like other specialty chemicals, share common business characteristics that transcend geographic boundaries. They are manufactured 1n a few selected areas, generally expensive relative to commodity chemicals, shipped and compete globally and usually require specialized knowledge for proper use. Specialty mining chemicals are relative newcomers to chemical markets. The vast majority of mining chemicals are derived from products that are less than two decades old. Traditional collectors and frothers have been available for a considerably longer time. The emphasis on adding value to existing products and byproducts Is responsible for several characteristic features of the mining chemicals business. Most raw materials for these chemicals are related to oil and gas byproducts, chemical refineries, pulp and paper mills and all chemical manufacturers. Until the last several years these operations were located In Industrialized countries, while a significant number of mining chemical users were In developing countries. Therefore International trade In mining chemicals developed through agencies or agents in each particular country.

This set was developed to use the mathematical methods and computers in the data analysis and accumulation of the large amount of geological data to solve the typical geological problems at the deposit exploring stage as well as for planning and managing in the open cast deposit mining. That is to say, the set of tasks ensures the geological data base at the stage of the deposit exploring and also its further use and. updating at the exploration stage. The following main elements may be ear-marked in the complex: (1) geological data base (GDB), (2) the data input system, (3) GDB maintainance, (4) "Geologist" geological application package (GAP). Let us consider now each element purpose. 1) GDB logical structure is determined through five hierarchical substructures with a common root segment.

Mine closure and reclamation issues have evolved over the past several years becoming further complicated by stricter standards and by the cmrent economic climate and price of gold. Many mine permits are calling for more stringent remediation of spent ore heaps and tailings. Leachate solution water quality must meet strict discharge criteria for multiple parameters besides cyanide at mine closure. Closure standards are more difficult to meet and most mines do not have an increased budget at the end of mine life to deal with the falling standards. These issues make additional gold recove1y at the end of mine life a critical problem in financing some closure operations. Another issue is the length of time that must be budgeted for heap rinsing operations. Innovative biological processes developed and applied by Pintail Systems, Inc. at numerous mine closures have indicated that bio-processes can significantly enhance gold recovery dur­ing heap cyanide bio-detox over the recoveries expected from rinse operations. If heap rinsing can be eliminated or reduced and if gold recovery can be improved at the end of mine life, many mine closures may be possible with processes that pay for themselves or generate profit. Additional advantages of the bio­detox technology is that it can be engineered to treat multiple contaminants besides Weak Acid Dissociable (WAD) cyanide. Other contaminants treated in heap process solutions include nitrates, ammonia, heavy metals, thiocyanate and total cyanide. At the Cripple Creek and Victor Mining Company Ironclad Mine near Victor, CO, 5 million tons ofrinsed, heap leached spent ore were biologically detoxified to reduce cyanide content, enhance gold recovery during bio-detox and to reduce dissolved metals in heap leachate solutions. During the bio-detox treatment period a substantial improvement in gold recovery allowed the detox oper­ation to operate as a profit center. Final gold recovery was at least twice what was expected from a normal rinse operation.

This paper describes a graphics station and graphics software designed specifically for use within the minerals industry. Through the graphics station, a user is able to recall maps for modification, display them on a color CRT, send the work to a plotter, and restore the work when finished. The engineer may use the system for the storing of data, per- forming engineering calculations, doing word processing, and performing general file maintenance. In addition, the system may be used to communicate with a mainframe computer for such purposes as: transmission of large data files, graphic 3-dimensional rotation of a mineral deposit or mine design, contouring of spacial data, and other data processing work.
