Dramatic economic and political reform is under way in the transitional economies of the world. Transition extends beyond the restructuring of a nation's economy and political thinking. It also affects social, cultural and even religious aspects of society. Transition is a long-term process and generally unstable as the pace of reform is rarely the same across the many spheres of society. As nations modify their economies, industrial activities - including minerals exploration, extraction, processing and trade - are also being affected, according to a Financial Times of London management report. Mining policies are being revised to encourage greater foreign involvement, while legal regimes are being rewritten to protect foreign investments. From India to Peru, and South Africa to Russia, countries have been preparing, improving and expanding foreign investment laws, mining codes and economic stimulus measures to accelerate their minerals development. Privatization of mining is proceeding in many nations. Meanwhile, corporatization of former ministries and government agencies responsible for mining is also occurring. According to Minerals and Mining in the Transitional Economies: Poised For the Future, common objectives in the restructuring of a mining industry are to enhance overall economic and industrial growth, improve efficiencies in mineral recovery and use, acquire newer, advanced technologies, reduce environmental repurcussions of mining and improve safety conditions. The nature of mining is changing noticeably within the transitional economies. The industry is becoming more re¬sponsive to market forces and private sector concerns. The new report examines the changing characteristics of mining in the transitional economies. These include nations moving from centrally planned to market economies, as well as countries in the midst of economic and political reform, including the liberalization of industry. Information is presented to help business planners understand the impacts of transition on mining activities and re-evaluate their longterm strategies and market development policies. The document is divided into 10 chapters. Five of them are devoted to the evolving mining industries of Russia, South Africa, India, Peru and China. These countries were highlighted because their minerals sectors are undergoing changes. These include the opening up of their resources to foreign mining companies. According to the report's author, mining in the transitional economies during the next decade will be characterized by: ? Continued rewriting of national mining policies to create more favorable investment climates. ? Increased exploration for gold and selected base metals in newly opened regions. ? Innovative project financing schemes involving multiple partners and international lending institutions, such as the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). ? Increased gold and copper ore production capacity resulting from new investment and expansion of existing operations. ? Continued geographical shifting of metallurgical processing facilities from developed to other mineral-producing nations. ? Privatization of state-owned mining and processing assets requiring advanced technologies for improvement or expansion. ? Increased awareness of environmental concerns in business decisions related to mining and metallurgy.

Although temperature is known to have a substantial effect on many processes, this parameter has been widely dismissed as insignificant for mineral comminution. For this reason, temperature effects on grinding have largely escaped notice. However, it has been observed that processing plants which are subjected to large seasonal temperature variations show a change in performance which appears to be due to changing feed temperatures. The general effect is an increase of the specific energy consumption as the temperature decreases. In autogenous mills, an increased rate of production of critical-size material has also been observed. This is due, at least in part, to changing rheological conditions in the mill, with the slurry viscosity increasing markedly at low temperatures. Mechanical changes in the rock with temperature, such as increased brittle fracture, is also responsible for a portion of the observed seasonal effect, and may account for this phenomenon being observed only in certain plants.

Particle shape and size distributions are among the most important parameters that affect the filtration efficiency of phosphogypsum in wet- process phosphoric acid production. Cost-effective enhancement in filtration rate is desired by phosphoric acid producers for higher plant capacity and lower operating costs. In this regard, numerous research efforts have been carried out in different laboratories as well as in pilot and plant testing. Nevertheless, changes in phosphogypsum crystal shape and size distribution deserve special attention. In this study, the results obtained in the presence of Crysmod and Hiflo-S5 surfactants are discussed. The influence of such additives on crystal morphology and size distribution are studied under different sulfate contents (supersaturation). The obtained data are correlated with process efficiency parameters such as filtration rate, digestion of rock, and recovery of phosphate values. Up to 60% increase in filtration rate is obtained. In addition, an increase in digestion efficiency and P205 recovery is achieved due to addition of surface active agents. The observed beneficial effects are explained in the light of the changes induced in crystal habit, size, and size distribution.

"Iron ore for alternate iron processes concerns alternate iron products designed for use in EAF (electric arc furnace) steelmaking processes. These alternate iron products include both DRI (direct reduced iron), HBI (hot briquetted iron) and merchant pig iron. Merchant pig iron can be produced in conventional blast furnaces, mini blast furnaces (including charcoal BF's) or novel processes such as RHF/SAF (rotary hearth furnace/submerged arc furnace) such as Iron Dynamics or RHF such as Mesabi Nugget. These novel processes are coal based and can use iron ore concentrates or recycled steel plant oxides. The blast furnace processes can use conventional feed materials: pellets, sinter, lump ore and coke. However, DRI and HBI processes are predominantly pellet based but require DR grade pellets that are low enough in acidic gangue (SiO2 and Al2O3) to avoid additional expense in the EAF process This paper will focus on the quality and availability of DR grade pellets for NAFTA DRI/HBI plants but also concentrates for fines based processes and feed materials for merchant pig iron production. INTRODUCTION This paper will outline alternative (to the blast furnace) competitive ironmaking processes and process routes. Within each section the types of iron ore to be utilized will be discussed. Before discussing some of the details of these processes, it may be appropriate to review some definitions and commonly used terms within this industry. DefinitionsDirect Reduction: Reduce iron oxide to metallic iron without melting. Unreduced ore compounds remain as undesirable oxides • Direct Reduced Iron: Iron oxide feedstock exits in same form as entered (pellets in, pellets out; lumps in, lumps out) • Hot Briquetted Iron: DRI that has been hot (1200°F, 650°C) briquetted to a high density pillow shaped briquette • Hot Metal: Molten iron in liquid form, above 2500°F, 1370°C • Pig Iron: Solid product of the iron blast furnace • Residuals: Undesirable elements such as copper, nickel, chromium, tin, sulfur, molybdenum and phosphorus • Gangue: Rock minerals in the iron ore such as silica (SiO2), alumina (A2O3), calcia (CaO), magnesia (MgO). These remain in the oxide form in DR processes. • Reduction: Fe2O3 + 3 CO = 2 Fe + 3CO2 2 Fe2O3 + 3 H2 = 2 Fe + 3H2O (Fe2O3 > Fe3O4 > FeO > Fe)"

Soda ash is the common name for sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), an alkali compound that is the 11th largest inorganic chemical in terms of production of all domestic inorganic and organic chemicals, excluding petrochemical feedstocks. Despite that most people have never heard of soda ash, it is an important industrial compound used to manufacture glass, chemicals, soaps and detergents, pulp and paper, and many other familiar consumer products. Natural alkalis have been used by mankind for thousands of years; however, their industrial manufacture dates back to only the latter half of the 18th century. Natural deposits of sodium carbonate have been known as early as about 3500 BC, when the Egyptians used natural soda ash in making glass. They also mixed lime and soda ash to make sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) that was combined with silicate minerals found in the Sinai desert. This made a soluble silica, which when added to aluminum-rich silt from the Nile River, produced a silica- aluminate cement mortar with excellent bonding properties for construction. The Romans in the first century AD also used natural soda ash in glass manufacture but expanded its use medically for the treatment of colic pains and skin eruptions, and in the making of bread. Elsewhere, people used the ashes of wood to obtain their source of alkali. People learned over time that different types of wood yielded various ashes with different properties; therefore, various plants were burned specifically for their ashes. Ash from plants grown in salt-bearing soils (such as saltwort) and from kelp and other seaweeds, especially Spanish barilla, were so different from ashes obtained from other vegetation that it became known as soda ash (due to its sodium content) versus pot ash, a potassium-based alkali ash. About 13 t of barilla ashes produced 1 t of sodium carbonate and 14 kg of iodine as a byproduct. The difference between these two ashes was relatively obscure until Duhamel Dumonceau made the distinction clear in 1736. The word soda ash developed from common usage and is perhaps more well known today than its synonym sodium carbonate. One of the primary ores of soda ash is trona, a sodium carbonate-bearing mineral that's name is traced back to Arabic origin. Trona also is known internationally by other names such as urao (Venezuela), kaum (Nigeria), natron (from Greek nitron and Latin natrium), and szekso (Hungary). The beginning of the Industrial Revolution in Western Europe in the late 18th century soon put a strain on the availability of raw materials to meet consumer demands. One of these scarce materials was soda ash. Because of the Seven Years War with England and the Napoleonic wars with other parts of Europe, France could not obtain sufficient quantities of Spanish barilla or other supplies of vegetable alkali to meet the growing demand. Efforts were needed to synthesize soda ash. In 1775, the French Academy of Sciences offered a large prize of 2,400 livres to someone who could find an inexpensive method to make soda ash. In September 1791 at St. Denis, Nicolas Leblanc (1742- 1806), a French chemist, developed such a technique using salt, sulfuric acid, coal, and limestone. The French Revolution interfered with its development, and his patent and factory were confiscated with Leblanc receiving only token compensation. Napoleon returned his factory to him; however, Leblanc was not able to raise enough capital to reopen it, and he committed suicide in 1806. A small, but not particularly successful, Leblanc plant was established in England in 1814. It was not until 1823 when the process first became commercially successful in Liverpool, England. The process was introduced in Germany in 1843 and in Austria in 1851 (Harness and Coons, 1942). Soda ash production by the Leblanc process reached its peak of about 599 500 t in 1880, after which it began to decline as the Solvay process became more popular. The Leblanc process was used to a limited extent in Europe during World War I but had disappeared by World War II. The Solvay process, also known as the ammonia-soda process, was developed by Alfred and Ernest (1 838-1922) Solvay in 1861 based on a concept by Fresnel that had been known since 1811. For the next 50 years, the implementation of the idea evaded industrial chemists because no large-scale and economic means could be found to commercialize the concept. Although Ernest Solvay was unaware of the existance of an ammonia-soda concept, he solved the problems by utilizing carbonating towers. The Solvay process produced soda ash from salt, limestone, and coke, with ammonia as a catalyst. With a capital of 136,000 francs, the first plant was built by the Solvay brothers at Couillet, Belgium, in 1863 with production commencing in 1865. Synthetic soda ash production amounted to 1.5 tpd in 1866, but reached 10 tpd by 1872. They patented their use of carbonating towers in 1872 that had made ammonia-soda manufacturing a successful continuous process. Their second plant was built in 1872 at Dombasle, France. In 1874, the first Solvay plant in England was built at Northwich by Ludwig Mond, the namesake of Brunner Mond and Co. (formerly Imperial Chemical Industries), the company that currently operates the two English Solvay plants. In the United States, William B. Cogswell in February 1879 heard a presentation on the Solvay process and sailed to Europe to meet with the Solvay brothers to seek their support for using their process in New York. At first, the brothers were not interested; however, Mr. Cogswell was persistent and ultimately gained their support. The Solvay Rocess Co. was formed Sep. 2 1, 1881, and construction began immediately on the first Solvay plant at Geddes, near Syracuse, NY. The plant came onstream Jan. 10, 1884, and produced 11 180 t in its first year of operation. In 1910, rotary calciners were installed that increased capacity to 1 000 tpd. By 1930, plant capacity was up to 2 400 tpd. The facility remained in continuous operation for more than 100 years. By 1939. 10 Solvay soda ash plants were in operation in 6 States throughout the nation. The Syracuse plant was officially closed Jan. 6, 1986, with total shutdown completed by Feb. 1986. Ironically, this facility was the first Solvay plant as well as the last. Visible-wavelength and near-infrared multispectral image cubes for the Animas River Watershed from Hermosa, Colorado to the headwaters at Animas Forks, Colorado were acquired on June 18, 1996 using the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's AVIRIS (Airborne Visible and InfraRed Imaging Spectrometer) instrument (Green et al., 1998). These image cubes have been analyzed using the USGS Tetracorder V3.4 implementation (Clark et al., 1995), an expert system which utilizes a database of more than 300 laboratory spectra of endmember minerals and mineral mixtures to generate maps of mineralogy, vegetation coverage, and other material distributions. Major iron-bearing, clay, carbonate, and other minerals were identified along with several minerals associated with acid-generating hydrothermal systems including pyrite, jarosite, alunite and goethite. Additionally, distributions of alkaline minerals such as calcite and chlorite indicate a relation between acid- buffering assemblages and stream geochemistry within the watershed.

The Line Creek Mine is operated by Crows Nest Resources Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Shell Canada Resources Limited. It is located approximately 25 km north of Sparwood in southeast British Columbia (refer to figure 1). The Line Creek coal deposit is part of the Upper Elk Coalfield in the East Kootenays. The coal is a medium volatile, low sulfur, bituminous coal and is used as a coking coal. Coal close to the outcrop is typically of low F.S.I. and is processed for thermal use. The present pits have a total coal reserve of 30 million clean tonnes and is a multi-bench, open-pit operation. The coal is recovered by front shovel and backhoe combination, and hauled to the plant with a fleet of 120-tonne and 40-tonne capacity trucks. Line Creek is unique in that it can simultaneously treat both metallurgical and thermal coal in separate processing facilities (refer to figure 2). Run-of-mine coal is delivered to the truck dump. The plus 50 mm material is scalped off and reduced to minus 50 mm in two rotary breakers. The raw coal is then conveyed to one of five, 5000-tonne capacity, silos. Typically one silo is used for thermal coal and four for metallurgical coal (refer to figure 3).

"INTRODUCTION In carbonate rocks, it is difficult to characterize due to the high degree of heterogeneity in pore geometry. Carbonate rocks have various types of pore systems such as fractures and vugs, and this heterogeneity should be considered for more realistic prediction of oil production in carbonate reservoirs. This study carried out water flooding experiments using five carbonate rock samples in order to observe the change of physical properties. Firstly, qualitative and quantitative analyses were conducted for each carbonate samples by use of XRD and XRF to evaluate the mineral content. All samples are mainly composed of CaCO3 and after that, the ICP experiments were carried out for the water passing through the carbonate. As a result, it was possible to measure the quantity of CaCO3, MgO, Fe2O3 component in water and due to this effect, the permeability of carbonate was altered especially in the front part of the core. Finally, after the carbonate was saturated by 30 API crude oil, water injection to enhance the oil recovery was repeated and it was confirmed that the oil-producing characteristics are different depending on the dissolution characteristics of carbonate rock samples. CORE SAMPLE ANALYSIS Porosity and Permeability Experiment Porosity and permeability were measured. The procedures are as follows (Figure 1). 1. Measure the diameter and length of the dry core using Vernier caliper. 2. Put the core in the core holder, run vacuum pump until the inlet and outlet pressure gauge equal. 3. Saturate the core using ISCO pump to inject water at 650 psi 4. Measure the amount of water and calculate the porosity 5. Set up the outlet pressure at 500 psi. 6. The flow rate measure when the equilibrium 7. Calculate the permeability through Darcy’s Law. 8. Cutting of core upstream and downstream about 13cm, and measure the each of permeability."

The Gatineau shaft described in this paper was an excavation of about 38 m diameter and 21 m depth constructed in Gatineau, Quebec, across the Ottawa River just north of Ottawa, Ontario. A large sewage lift pumping station-was to be constructed in this excavation. Subcontractor for the shaft excavation and initial support was Beaver Underground Structures Ltd., of Dorval, Quebec. Mr. William C. Cox of Beaver conceived the idea for the support system used in this excavation, and was responsible for the construction activities. Initial analysis and design concepts for the lining system were developed by Mr. Ronald E. Heuer. Detailed lining design and construction monitoring were the responsibility of Mr. Jean-Michel Loignon. Geologic conditions indicated by two borings within the shaft area are illustrated in Fig. 1. The shaft excavation would be in the sensitive Leda silty clay. The clay is of stiff to very stiff consistency, with an insitu vane shear strength averaging about 115 KPa (2400 psf) and a reported low value of about 87 KPa (1820 psf). Low strength values were from the middle of the clay layer, with higher strengths at the top and bottom. Average shear strength at the level of the base of the excavation was about 137 KPa (2860 psf). Remolded vane shear strength averaged about 20 KPa (420 psf), with a reported low of 13 KPa (270 psf). Based upon average strength values, the clay sensitivity is 5.8. The clay has an average water content of 53% (range 43 to 66%), which is near its liquid limit (average 56%). The clay unit weight is about 1760 kg/m3 (110 pcf). Underlying the shaft site at shallow depth is limestone bedrock within which the piezometric head is approximately equal to the original ground surface elevation. For shaft support, a -cast-in-place concrete wafer system was considered, but was discarded because of time restrictions imposed by concrete placement and curing. Power cable costs are only a small part of total mining costs. So many mine operators consider power cable failure and resultant downtime as part of the cost of doing business. But, viewed in terms of lost production, these costs can be quite significant. Now one company, Cablec, seeks to cut cable costs by upgrading the polymer compounding process used to make cable insulating and semiconducting materials. Cablec is the leading manufacturer of electrical power cables in North America. And with about a third of the market, Cablec is the largest supplier of power cable to the mining industry in the United States. To improve its products, Cable has entered the polymer compounding business. In July, it began producing insulator and semiconductor polymer compounds at its plant in Indianapolis, IN. "This new facility provides a quantum leap over conventional compounding methods," said Harry C. Schell, Cablec's president and chief executive officer. "The Cablec polymers plant is producing a dramatically higher standard of polymer compounds that provide significantly higher levels of performance and improved life cycle costs for power cable." Cablec faces tough foreign competition in the wire and cable business. Competing on price alone is difficult, particularly when foreign producers are state subsidized. So Cablec feels the best way to compete is to establish new quality production standards. The company's new polymers plant is one way to do this. By increasing purity control and uniformity in polymer compounding, Cablec says its power cables will last longer and fail less often. A typical medium voltage cable consists of a conductor, conductor shield, insulation, insulation shield, metal shield, and jacket. The conductor shield and the insulation shield are conducting polymers. Contaminants and imperfections can occur within the insulation, at the conductor shield/insulation interface, or at the insulation shield/ insulation interface. Over time, these contaminants and imperfections can decrease the electrical strength of the cable or cause premature cable failure. The effort to minimize the number and size of any possible contaminants begins with pure polymer compounds mixed in a clean facility. However, most power cable manufacturers manually handle raw materials, use ethylene/propylene (EP) in bulk bales, and mix polymercompounds in open Banbury mixers. The quality and uniformity of polymer compounds is also impacted by temperature variations in the mixing process. This results in wide gradations of product consistency from batch to batch and ultimately contributes to power cable failure. Cablec says the improved polymer compounds from its state-of-the-art plant will be the purest and most consistent insulating and semiconducting materials available. The plant itself RCA spent $18 million to build Cablec's Indianapolis plant. RCA used the facility to mix specialty polymer compounds used to make video disks. RCA had two considerations in mind for the plant, cleanliness and uniformity of the compounds. However, when the video disk market failed to materialize, RCA sold the 46.5 dam 2 (50,000 sq ft) plant to Cablec for $3.1 million. Cablec invested an additional $3 million for modifications and increased production capabilities. Today's replacement cost for such a facility is estimated at $30 million. Cablec says the plant will set a new standard for performance and be economically difficult to duplicate anywhere. One of the essential elements of the plant's clean process environment is the air intake system. It filters contaminants greater than 2 um, less than one-fiftieth the current industry standard. All material handling and conveying areas in the facility are air-locked. This keeps out contaminants such as smoke, dust, and pollen. Banks of pneumatic pumps move polymer components through the system and continually filter the air. The plant also has a backup air intake system. No process downtime due to pump failure here. From the time raw material enters the plant, it is stored, transported, and processed in filtered air by an airtight stainless steel system. The stainless steel resists rust and corrosion. This further eliminates the danger of contamination from paint or rust particles in the conveyance network. The implementation of continuous quality improvement is the confluence of Total Quality Management, People Empowerment, Performance Indicators and Information Engineering. The supporting information technologies allow a mineral processor to narrow the gap between management business objectives and the process control level. One of the most important contributors is the user friendliness and flexibility of the personal computer in a client/server environment. This synergistic combination when used for real time performance monitoring translates into production cost savings, improved communications and enhanced decision support. Other savings come from reduced time to collect data and perform tedious calculations, act quickly with fresh new data, generate and validate data to be used by others. This paper presents an integrated view of plant management. The selection of the proper tools for continuous quality improvement are described. The process of selecting critical performance monitoring indices for improved plant performance are discussed. The importance of a well balanced technological improvement, personnel empowerment, total quality management and organizational assets are stressed.

The McLaughlin Mine is a world class epithermal gold deposit located in the coastal thrust fault of Northern California, U.S.A. Homestake adopted a proactive strategy in the permitting of the Mine. Extensive environmental baseline studies were undertaken. Engineering and process alternatives were evaluated for environmental impact along with other factors. A unique pressure oxidation process was selected. Screening studies were conducted as a basis for the selection of waste rock and tailings disposal sites. Project engineering and permitting were fast tracked. Construction required eighteen months, and the first gold bar was poured in March of 1985, six years after the initial discovery. Project facilities are designed and operated so as to minimize environmental impacts. A comprehensive monitoring program demonstrates permit compliance. Reclamation of the site is ongoing throughout the Mine's twenty year life. Nonmined lands are managed to maximize wildlife habitat value.

The work described in this paper is sponsored by the Bureau of Mines for the purpose of accelerating the drilling of roof bolt holes and reducing the quantity of materials needed to fill each hole. A high-speed small-hole drill has been fabricated and tested in the laboratory. High priority has been given to safety, reliability, and compatibility with underground coal mining practice. The combination of drag bits and erosion jets is designed for high penetration rate, long wear life, and uniform hole size in a variety of sedimentary strata. A reliable high-pressure high-speed swivel feeds water to the bit at about 4 1/min (1 gpm). The duplex hydraulic intensifier which drives the jets has a 40 kw capacity (30hhp) Results of recent full-scale laboratory testing are presented.

In the event of fire underground, it is essential that all miners be warned as quickly as possible. With mine air, rapidly depleted of oxygen and contaminated with smoke and toxic fire gases, any delay in the warning signal could have disastrous consequences. Unfortunately, present mine, fire warning systems, such as stench, audible or visual alarms, telephones, and messengers, are often slow, unreliable, and limited in coverage.

The effects of metal solution concentration, biomass density, length of exposure time, and pH were determined for biosorption of molybdenum (Mo) and chromium (Cr) by three organisms. Results indicate that it is possible to sorb Mo and Cr from dilute solutions. Differences were observed in the abilities of an organism to sorb Mo and Cr as well as among respective abilities of the three microorganisms. This suggests an inherent selectivity of the organism which may afford the means to control a sorption-based process. Results also indicate that the metal sorption abilities of these microorganisms depend on duration of exposure, biomass density, solution pH, and the metal concentration of the solution. Each of these parameters suggests an additional means of controlling the sorption process.

There are close to two million tons of Industrial Minerals processed and sold in North America wherein the processor/marketer has no affiliation with the source mine. The largest quantity, about 800,000 tons, is barium sulfate, which is sourced in lump ore form mainly from China and India. The Alumina Trihydrate Industry sources several hundred thousand tons from various alumina refineries. Substantial quantities of bauxite, zircon, magnesite, and fluorspar arrive in North American ports each month. There are also rapidly growing quantities of offshore talcs and calcium carbonate ores being processed in U.S. plants. These feedstocks are usually quite pure, have unique properties, and enjoy bulk rail or waterborne freight economies that allow successful competition with locally sourced raw materials. With increasing restrictions on mining activities, and the increasing need for sophisticated functional minerals, the importation of minerals will continue to grow.

The rational and optimal determination of the design of a mining exploitation is a very intricate and difficult problem : the parameters are numerous, some technical, some economic or technico-economic which cannot be fully controlled; beside, deposits are estimated from very limited information and the choice criteria are not always quantitative, the economic context has to be anticipated by several years, and even the technological limits can change tomorrow. So, although very clever and performing numerical algorithms have been developed in recent years for open-pit design, we consider that this problem has not really been solved satisfactorily until now. The reasons are that people have concentrated their efforts on informatical algorithmical problems, and have assumed that the technical and economical data are well defined at the time of the study, which is generally not true. In particular, the mere fact of assigning dollar- values to blocks in order to maximize the total cash-flow is generally unrealistic because of the uncertainty of the data used. Consequently, the significance of the unique pit obtained as a result of these algorithms is questionable.

For several years, Independence Mining Co. (IMC) has routinely used oxygen fluid-bed roasting to pre-oxidize refractory gold ores ahead of conventional carbon-in-leach (CIL) processing. Oxygen serves jointly as the fluidizing medium and the combustion gas. This technology has proven to be reliable, environmentally sound and cost-effective. IMC is a subsidiary of the Minorco group. The company operates the Jerritt Canyon (a joint venture with FMC Gold) and Big Springs gold mines in the Independence mountain range north of Elko, NV. Ore bodies in the range contain characteristic refractory ore. It requires pre-oxidation ahead of conventional CIL processing. This article describes the technology developed specifically to treat these difficult ores.

Panned stream-sediment, geochemistry-based gold exploration in those parts of the southeastern Piedmont proximal to the Fall Line must take into account potential contamination from basal fluvial sediments of the Coastal Plain. Anomalies attributable to the incorporation of placer gold of Coastal Plain origin into modern Piedmont drainages have been identified in portions of Lee, Macon, and Tallapoosa Counties, AL, and Baldwin and Hancock Counties, GA. Identification and interpretation of such multicyclic anomalies must be based on knowledge of the local maximum Cretaceous transgression, paleotopography, modern and paleofluvial system dynamics, and fineness trends and Au-Ag zoning in gold grains.

"INTRODUCTION For a long time now automation has been state of the art in production engineering and chemical engineering. The advantages of automation are, for instance, higher reliabilities of production processes, higher product qualities as well as capacities and improved safety conditions for the personnel. In contrast, many operations in mining are still conducted manually by machine operators instead of autonomous control units. One example for this is the excavation of underground hard coal which is still executed with aid of human perception. The Institute for Mining and Metallurgical Machinery (IMR) has been working on possibilities for sensor-based automation of mining machinery for many years now. Thereto the focus is set on the implementation of common material analysis techniques into ruggedized conditions as a basis for automation. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for instance is an atom emission technique which enables the determination of the elemental composition of a sample. After introducing LIBS this paper will give an overview on dust formation during the cutting process. With the illustration of a few examples the challenges in determining dust concentrations specifically such of cutting processes are explained in further detail. The final chapter will outlay the possibilities and challenges in utilizing cutting-induced dust for the automation of shearer loaders. LASER-INDUCED BREAKDOWN SPECTROSCOPY LIBS Fundamentals LIBS (laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy) is a contact-free method for analyzing materials in any state of aggregate. It pertains the atom emission techniques and is based on the generation of plasma, inducing avalanche ionization on the surface of a solid material or any spot in a gas or aqueous solution. With sufficient background information on the expected elements and an additional calibration, this method can determine all present elements not only qualitatively but also quantitatively. However, this method cannot be utilized for determining the molecular composition of materials – if this feature is required a complementary method such as Raman analysis needs to be added. (1, 2)"
