To accommodate the immediate and long term growth of the Hunter Valley, one of Australia's major coal producing regions, a third coal terminal was required in the Port of Newcastle, N.S.W. The initial capacity required was 15 million tons per annum, made up of 40 different blends, to be expanded to 50 million tons of 100 different blends, made up from 70 grades. Coal arrives in 3,200 ton unit trains, a total of 16,000 trains in a year.

"The Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR), Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD), is continuing its High-Energy High-Displacement (HEHD) testing of field-scale shotcrete panels. A test program was developed to determine the relationship between applied force, displacement, and energy for both unreinforced and reinforced shotcrete panels. Reinforcement options consisted of synthetic macro-fibers, sprayed polyurea liners, chain-link fence, welded-wire mesh, and combinations of these products. During testing, photogrammetry was used to measure the geometric changes of the panels, including volume changes and panel cracking. These measurements were correlated with the load and displacement data, allowing visual observation to be related to the applied force and displacement. The test results provide a comparison of the mechanical performance of the various panel types and can be used by the practicing engineer to evaluate installed support based on visual observation of cracking and deformation. Visual assessment of the loading cycle and strength capacity of shotcrete in underground excavations will improve mine safety by providing a means to quantify the stability of installed shotcrete support. World gold production figures and the processes used for gold production indicate a high dependence on both cyanide leaching and carbon adsorption metallurgies. Problems associated with the use of carbon in the treatment of refractory ores as well as economic and environmental considerations associated with the use of cyanide point to the advantages that can be realized through the use of more efficient gold adsorption media and with cyanide recovery. We have developed a process termed AurosaveTM-1 which provides a number of advantages through the use of a new synthetic robust gold adsorption medium, termed Vitrokele TM V-911. This process allows further recovery of gold from a variety of ores and allows for a simplified process for use not involving thermal regeneration or high pressure elution. We have also developed a cyanide recovery process termed Cyanosave ™ which uses Vitrokele TM V-911 and allows efficient recovery of cyanides from decants or tailings and re-use of recovered cyanide. This obviates the high chemical expenses for cyanide destruction where environmental issues require such water and tailings management.

"The immediate ring closure method, in which the entire periphery of the excavation area is closed immediately with an initial support within a short distance from the excavation face, has been increasingly used in Japan, especially, as one of the most effective countermeasures against difficult ground conditions in conventional tunneling. For reasonable design of this method, the performance requirements for the initial support should be clearly stated. The analysis of construction data of 30 road tunnels and the three-dimensional numerical modeling based on real data suggest that the immediate ring closure stabilizes the tunnel structure and the ground around it because of the inner pressure effect of the initial support, especially, for low ground competence factor and small internal friction angle. Finally, the bending compressive strength and the cross-sectional geometry of the initial support have to be considered in the tunnel design while considering the earth pressure and ground properties. INTRODUCTION Conventional tunneling methods often deal with difficult ground conditions such as soft ground or squeezing ground conditions. The immediate ring closure method, in which the entire periphery of the excavation area is immediately supported within a short distance from the excavation face (Figure 1), has been increasingly used in Japan as one of the most effective countermeasures against difficult ground conditions in conventional tunneling (e.g. Takahashi et al., 2011; Nakaoka et al., 2013). Ravensthorpe Nickel Operation (RNO) is a major new mine and processing plant currently being constructed by BHP Billiton in a ?green field? site near the small town of Ravensthorpe, about 150 km west of Esperance and six hours drive from Perth in Western Australia. Ensuring that the project has a positive overall impact on the surrounding region and that this extends well beyond the life of the operation will be a major challenge for RNO, state and local government, and the local community. For the last two years, the Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining (CSRM) has been assisting RNO management and the RNO Community Liaison Committee to develop a community sustainability monitoring framework for the project. This paper reports on the process that was used to develop the framework, describes the main elements and briefly discusses key learnings from the exercise.

The use of CCD (counter current decantat.io;1) thickeners, or; clarifiers, in the gold mining industry is quite common. Although there are a number of technologies in the industry which utilize these types of tanks, the fundamental requirement is to settle leach tailings and eventually separate gold and silver "values" from the "barren" (no values) solution. The thickener separation process varies depending upon the raw ores found in any specific mine. In mines where rudimentary, rocky ores are most common the settling process is fairly straight-forward and uncomplicated. But, for those mines with complex carbonaceous ores, usually identified by high silting, clay components, the ability to monitor and control the settled materials is quite laborious and costly. The task of monitoring and maintaining control of settled residue in clarifiers and thickeners, of any design, is difficult in any industry, but due to the added desire in the gold mining industry of leaching the values from the liquid slurry, the problem is multiplied. Other common activities taking place in the thickeners are exaggerated internal flow rates, settleable solids activity due to rake movement, and the settling activity generated by flocculents being added to the liquid medium. All of this action within the liquid column causes the continual monitoring of the interfaces within the tank close to impossible.

Since undergoing a major mill expansion in 1979, Canada Tungsten Mining Corporation Limited has successfully operated a somewhat unconventional rod mill/rod mill grinding circuit at its mill in Tungsten, N.W.T., Canada. The concentrator employs two rod mills in series, of unmatched size and horsepower, for production of feed to a gravity (tabling) circuit. Cyclones and screens are closed circuited with the secondary rod mill. Outlined in this paper are the rationale behind, and consequences of operation of this unusual grinding and classification configuration.

Fine coal is substantially more costly to process than coarse coal because of technical difficulties associated with separating fine particles and removing process water from both clean coal and refuse. Therefore, companies are often forced to discard coal fines to waste impoundments. According to a recent report published by National Research Council, the U.S. coal industry is discarding 70-90 million tons of coal fines annually to 713 active impoundments, most of which are located in Central Appalachia. On October 11, 2000, a 72-acre impoundment near Inez, Kentucky, accidentally released 250 million gallons of coal slurry into nearby underground mines, creeks, rivers, and schoolyards, thereby creating serious environ-mental concerns. Fortunately, recent advances in separation technologies make it possible to recover fine coal more efficiently from existing coal preparation plants and from waste streams previously discarded to impoundments. The availability of these new technologies allows companies to increase profitability and minimize environmental risks, which are conducive for achieving sustainable mining.

INTRODUCTION Due to the current depressed state of the mining industry, many mining companies have been forced to operate at less than maximum capacity. This paper will describe how the AMAX Henderson Molybdenum Mine and Mill near Empire and Parshall, Colorado respectively have utilized operations scheduling and budgeting to achieve production targets at minimum operating costs The AMAX Henderson Molybdenum Mine and Mill have been operating most recently at approximately sixty percent of maximum capacity. OPERATIONS SCHEDULING Production Targets. The production targets are tons, operating days, tons per opera- ting day, head grade, recovery, and pounds of molybdenum. One specific objective of operations scheduling is to meet the production target for pounds of molybdenum. Present market conditions dictate that production be adjusted to match sales of molybdenum. Over-production and creation of molybdenum inventories is unacceptable. In summary, the product ion target for pounds of molybdenum must be met, but not exceeded. Capacity. The AMAX Henderson Mill single stage open crushing circuit capacity is 48,000 dry short tons per day. The AMAX Henderson Mill single stage semi-autogenous primary grinding mill circuit capacity is 38,000 dry short tons per day. All other AMAX Henderson Mi 11 circuits such as rougher flotation, regrind, cleaner flotation, lead leach, filtering, drying and concentrate handling are sized to accommodate the 38,000 dry short tons per day and pro- ducts from same. The tailing delivery system is designed to accommodate tailing from a 38,000 dry short tons per day operation. Constraints. One mill production scheduling constraint is that the mill operating schedule must be the same as mine production, ore haulage and crushing. There is a total crushed ore stockpi1e storage capacity of 240,000 dry short tons. This breaks down to 60,000 dry short tons of crushed ore over the three reclaim pan feeders for each of the four primary grinding mill circuits. However, there is only approximately 10,000 dry short tons of live crushed ore available over the three reclaim pan feeders for each of the four primary grinding mill circuits. The Berkeley Pit of The Anaconda Company is located on the southeast slope of the Butte Hill, the legendary "Richest Hill on Earth," and is one of the largest pit operations in the world completely dependent on truck haulage. Through October 31, 1968, the Berkeley stripping and mining operations have moved more than 442,589,000 tons of material. Present scheduled production is at the rate of 260,000 tons per day, with a record quantity of 306,900 tons having been hauled on September 23, 1968. Although the Berkeley Pit has been in production only a little more than ten years, it has been the proving ground for many of the presently used large trucks. Beginning with the original R. G. LeTourneau 75-ton electric truck in 1960, Unit Rig 85- and 100-ton electric drives, Haulpak 65- and 105-ton electric drives, and Caterpillar 100-ton electric drives have all been tested under production conditions. In addition, engine development has kept pace with both 1000-hp diesel and 1100-hp gas turbine engines now under test. As the size of the Berkeley operation has grown, the truck fleet has changed in size and appearance in order to maintain economic mining costs. The original fleet consisted of forty-three 36-ton trucks with conventional mechanical drives. The present fleet is made up of eighty-nine trucks: nineteen 85-ton Unit Rig electrics with 700-hp diesel engines; sixty-nine 100-ton Unit Rig electrics with either 700- or 1000-hp diesel engines; and one 100-ton Unit Rig electric with an 1100-hp gas turbine engine.

With the increase of new mine development in the past several years, many coal mines have decided to self- perform the design and construction for their slope development projects. The development process of determining the proper configuration is challenging, and a major economical consideration. Greenbrier Smokeless Minerals engineering staff and consultants, along with DSI/American Commercial, developed a support configuration that was best suited for their slope. The developmental process took into consideration the length of slope, depth of slope at the high-wall transition, economics of a single or multiple entries, waterproofing, stresses on the steel supports and lagging during the backfilling operation. This paper describes the developmental concept of using a single entry, side by side configuration, using steel ?Banjo String? supports with steel plank lagging, to develop a long term permanent installation in a cut and cover application.

The principle oxide minerals of molybdenum are wulfenite (PbMoO4), ferrimolybdite (Fe2(MOO 4)3.nH2O), powellite (CaMoO4), and ilsemannite (Mo304). Wulfenite is found in Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, California, and Montana. It is also found in the states of Sonora and Chihuahua, Mexico. Prior to 1915 wulfenite ores were the primary source of molybdenum. The solubility of wulfenite in hot sodium sulfide was first noted by Bonardi(1) during attempts to sulfidize wulfenite material prior to flotation. He identified lead sulfide and soluble sodium molybdate as reaction products. Bacon (2) sulfidized wulfenite in preparation for flotation and by X-ray analysis found the reaction product to be lead sulfide. Holmes(3) made an extensive investigation of the extraction of molybdenum from wulfenite concentrates by leaching. Nearly 100% molybdenum extraction was possible from -100 mesh samples leached for 15 min with 10% sodium sulfide solution at room temperature. Molybdenum extraction from -100 mesh samples after leaching 30 min at a temperature of 45°C using 2, 4, and 6% sodium sulfide was about 32, 79, and 98% respectively. The extraction showed little sensitivity to time, temperature, or particle size using 10" sodium sulfide solution.

Little knowledge is available that considers the effects of continuous miner position on the possible respirable dust exposure of the remote mining machine operator. Such information could be very useful for increasing the awareness of the remote operator as to those parts of an extended cut that generate higher levels of respirable dust. This data could be used to develop guidelines for positioning the remote operator to reduce his potential exposure. This work details the effects of continuous miner position on dust levels measured on the machine and at the remote continuous miner operator location.

The study upon which this paper is based was completed by Battelle's Columbus Laboratories for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1974. It is but part of an overall effort by the Corps to evaluate the costs and benefits to the nation of waterway improvements. This study is primarily concerned with future coal markets for production from those counties near the Wabash River in the heart of the Eastern Interior Province. An objective here is to consider a most pessimistic energy (and hence, coal) demand for planning purposes.

INTRODUCTION In the early days of coarse-coal cleaning by the dense-medium process in Europe, loess was one of the materials used for medium solids. Newly developed cyclones were used to reclaim and thicken the loess suspension. On occasion, when the cyclone thickener at the Maurits mine in the Netherlands plugged, the overflow was found to be filled with clean coal free of impurity. From this observation stemmed the concept of the cyclone as a cleaning device. Development took place during World War II in the laboratory of the Dutch State Mines under the direction of M. G. Driessen. A 15-tph (13.6 t/h) pilot plant was in operation in the laboratory by 1945, when, in September, Driessen made the first public disclosure of the process in a paper presented to the Institute of Fuel in London.51 In April 1945, operation of this pilot plant was observed by H. F. Yancey, who was so impressed with the potential of the cyclone process that, on his return to the United States, a research program on the cyclone was immediately started by the US Bureau of Mines (USBM). This work led to an AIME paper in 1946 in which the first details of cyclone operation on American coals were made available.52 Commercial adoption of the cyclone proceeded in Europe, initially in the Netherlands, Germany, and France. In the United States, where coal is less costly and most of the coals are easy to clean and respond well to simpler cleaning processes, the first cyclone plant was not built until 1961.53 THEORY Before discussing the theory of a dense-medium cyclone, a brief description may be helpful to some readers who are not familiar with its basic operation. In a typical dense-medium cyclone, illustrated in Fig.7-51 a mixture of medium and raw coal enters tangentially near the top of the cylindrical section, thus forming a strong vortical flow. The refuse moves along the wall of the cyclone and is discharged through the underflow orifice. The washed coal moves toward the longitudinal axis of the cyclone and passes through the overflow orifice, or vortex finder, to the overflow chamber. Washed coal is discharged from this chamber, usually through a tangential outlet.

Experts, like many of the speakers at the SME Annual Conference, are frequently called upon by lawyers to assist them in litigation. Due to the technical nature of many cases, the testimony of an expert with knowledge and experience in a particular field is necessary to help a judge or jury understand and decide certain issues. Environmental litigation is no exception. Experts routinely are called upon to offer testimony to establish the existence of contamination and its source, as well as the potential health and environmental risks associated with the contaminants. This article will briefly discuss the factors courts apply to determine whether to admit expert testimony after the recent Supreme Court decision in Daubert v. Memell Dow Pharm., Inc., 509 U.S. 579 (1993). The Court's decision in Daubert overruled a long-standing test that had based the admissibility of scientific evidence on its "general acceptance" in the field in issue. Next, the article will discuss in general terms what a party must do to "link a particular defendant's conduct to the contamination involved in order to recover from that defendant. This link, known as causation, varies depending upon the type of claim being asserted. Expert witnesses are used extensively to help establish causation. JUNK SCIENCE OR GOOD SCIENCE- HOW DOES A COURT DETERMINE WHAT TO LET IN A frequent complaint in litigation involving technical or scientific issues is that one party or another is trying to use so-called "junk science" to prove its case. While some expert testimony might be so clearly lacking in support or so "off the wall" that a court can easily determine to exclude it, other testimony, especially testimony on the "cutting edge," is much more problematic. In 1923, the District of Columbia Circuit Court of Appeals decided the case of Frye v. United States, 293 E 1013 (1923). In deciding whether to admit certain expert testimony, the court in Frye stated that while a court will "go a long way in admitting expert testimony deduced from a well-recognized scientific

The ability to process complex precious metal sulfide concentrates containing antimony and arsenic in an economic and environmentally safe manner is an important problem facing the mining industry in the United States. Preliminary experiments have been performed to evaluate the possibility of treating a complex sulfide concentrate to recover antimony and precious metals while fixing the arsenic and sulfur as calcium arsenate and calcium sulfate. The process involves: • the oxidation of the antimony and arsenic minerals in the presence of soda ash (to collect the sulfur dioxide and to keep the antimony and arsenic from forming volatile compounds), •the selective leaching of the arsenic from the roast calcine with a heated caustic solution, •the precipitation of the arsenic and sulfate with calcium hydroxide and/or calcium chloride, •the reduction of the residual antimony (collecting the precious metals), •fuming of the metal to form a marketable antimony oxide, and •crucible reduction of the residue to obtain a gold and silver dore. Batch experiments, using synthetic concentrates of stibnite and arsenopyrite, were performed to evaluate the first stage of this process. Variables studied included mixture weight fractions, temperature, gas flow rate, oxygen partial pressure, and time. All of the off gas dust and sulfur containing gases were collected and analyzed. The roast solid residues were subjected to arsenic leach tests, and the leach solutions were subjected to arsenic and sulfate precipitation tests. Introduction The ability to treat a precious metal ore containing appreciable amounts of antimony and arsenic is dependent upon the characteristics of the ore. For some ores, selective flotation can be used to separate the antimony and arsenic minerals, which are then treated separately. Unfortunately, many ores are not treatable in this way, and the concentrates obtained may contain appreciable contamination (which limits the ability to make acceptable grade antimony products). If we consider the added value of the precious metals in the concentrate, then it is worthwhile to evaluate the potential for new methods to treat these types of concentrates. In addition, the environmental difficulties associated with arsenic disposal must be taken into account in any proposed process. If there is appreciable arsenic present, then it must be either recovered as a marketable product or placed in an insoluble form. The problem addressed in this research program has become increasingly important as the precious metals mining industry is encountering more ores of this type. A large deposit of this type exists in Idaho where the antimony occurs primarily as stibnite, with minor amounts of kermesite and tetrahedrite (Cooper, 1951). The gold appears in association with arsenopyrite with minor amounts of other arsenic minerals. Flotation has been used to obtain an antimony concentrate. The concentrate, however, is contaminated with appreciable amounts of arsenic and also contains precious metals. If the ore or concentrate contains appreciable amounts of base metals, then the recovery process becomes much more difficult. There are a number of other known deposits of this type in Alaska, Canada, Montana and elsewhere. The objective of this research program was to develop a fundamental understanding of the oxidation and leaching chemistry of the arsenic and antimony minerals so that technology may be developed to treat these ores in an economic and environmentally safe manner. Wendt (1949) and Koster and Royer (1940) discussed the possibilities of oxidative roasting of stibnite concentrates containing arsenic. Wendt describes a process used at a smelter in Czechoslovakia (in the 1930s) where roasting was carried out in rotary furnaces at 723° K (500° C). Most of the arsenic was removed as fume, as well as 25% of the antimony. No sulfur dioxide containment was described. The oxide fume from the furnace went to a heated caustic water leach, where the arsenic was preferentially dissolved and then precipitated with calcium chloride as calcium arsenate following solid-liquid separation. The antimony oxide was sold, and the solid oxide discharge from the rotary furnace was sent to a blast furnace where the antimony metal, containing the precious metals, was recovered. We are proud that one of our predecessor companies originated the phrase "Safety First". That phrase remains today as the guiding principle that governs our total approach to safety and well being in U. S. Steel. U. S. Steel management is totally committed to this attitude and our objective is to have every employee as deeply conscious of his safety responsibilities. Safety is a state of mind but like most things it must have a physical side - both intertwined and inseparable. You might say each promotes the other; and this gives us confidence that with hard work, cooperation from all individuals, and proper application of knowledge and experience, our ultimate objective of frequency "0" will be attained. It is in this vein of thought we present a paper today which gives you briefly our progress, mainly in the physical, or mechanical, protection of miners at work in the Southern District mining operations of U. S. Steel. The Southern District not only includes the underground mining of coal but the underground mining of zinc ore in Jefferson City, Tennessee, and the quarrying of dolomitic limestone near Bessemer, Alabama.
