The handling of radioactive waste deposits from factories that produce chemical fertilizers is a difficult problem, but has a great significance for soil quality and for the environment. The Romanian legislation has produced law and normative acts concordant with EU regulations for prevention and protection, and also for environmental contamination control with radionuclides. The soils and agricultural plants in the vicinity of phosphogypsum deposits are radioactively contaminated; the annual variability of the respective radioactivity values is demonstrated by annual records. Residual radioactivity monitoring determines the presence of radioactive ions in the soil and cultivated plants: wheat, maize, sunflower, as well as the spontaneous flora. The results obtained lead to the conclusion that ecological restoration works must be executed for degraded soils due to impacts of radioactive materials.

Compared to the traditional method of holding coal in railroad cars at the ports for dumping their contents into vessels, it provided for: a. "More than 800 million tons of material will be excavated during large underground projects such as tunnels, undergrounds and power plants by 2030 in Europe only. The raw material excavated is often classified as waste, which involves environmental impact and transport issues: landfill areas, CO2 emissions and noise. But how can such massive amounts of material be transported, processed and deposited? Using the example of the AlpTransit Ceneri Base Tunnel (15.4 km), we show that suitable excavated materials can be used sustainably as a primary resource for tunnel concrete. This requires careful planning of the installations and storage areas by the client, timely building of the processing plants and other handling facilities outside the tunnel and a continuous evaluation of the raw material quality. 1. INTRODUCTION Spoil management is a central element of large construction projects. The systematic reuse of suitable excavated material not only saves natural resources, reduces transport distances and landfill volume, but can also decrease overall construction costs. Ideally, all of the concrete needed for tunnel lining can be produced with this on-site material. Such a natural resource management concept was applied for the construction of the new Gotthard Base Tunnel (L = 57 km). Spoil management concepts are, how-ever, difficult to implement and call for innovative techniques, sophisticated logistics and organization. In the context of large projects, environmentally friendly transport, processing and storage of millions of tons of excavated loose material represent another logistics challenge (Simmen & Lieb, 2010). This paper shows key factors that led to the successful completion of spoil management at the Ceneri Base Tunnel, which constitutes a part of the AlpTransit Gotthard Project (Figure 1)."

During the last few years the New Lead Belt of South- eastern Missouri has become the main source of lead in the United States. It also produces significant amounts of zinc, copper, and silver. The mines are located on a narrow, mineralized trend extending southward from Viburnum, Missouri for about thirty-five miles. The area is part of the Ozark uplift and consists of steep-sided, heavily wooded hills with narrow valleys. Surface streams are very erratic, normally having low flows but becoming rushing torrents during the violent thunderstorms that occasionally occur. Because of the pristine nature of the country and the newness of the mining developments, the environmental impact of all phases has been closely watched.

This paper reviews the technologies used for processing aqueous metal-chloride solutions and describes the challenges that have been overcome in application of these technologies.

Microprocessor technology has revolutionized the business community by placing tremendous computing power in the hands of the end-user for a very inexpensive price tag. The range of applications covers process control, to office automation, to personal computing capabilities. With the influx of this new technology, which these systems have to offer, also comes some unique operational and control considerations. But before we address these items, let us lay a foundation of common terms to be used throughout this presentation. Due to the rapid advances in microprocessor technology, where a new generation of computers is announced every two or three years, it becomes difficult to define a microprocessor system and have it valid for an extended period of time! Therefore, for this presentation, we will be dealing with a subset of microprocessors called Personal Computers or PC's. At the heart of a PC is a Central Processing Unit or CPU. The CPU performs the actual program and command execution. The programs dealing with driving the various peripheral equipment is referred to as the Operating System (for example: DOS : Disk Operating System, CP/M - Control Program/Microcomputers, etc.). The CPU is normally housed in an enclosure which contains power regulators, peripheral equipment interfacing 'cards', and expansion 'slots' to enlarge the capabilities of the PC system.

The suitability of large-stone materials continues to present occasional problems in US construction. Distinctive modes of rock deterioration cracking, spalling, delaminating. disaggregating, disintegrating, and dissolving help to distinguish causes of deterioration. Design requirements, costs, and environmental factors remain critical to performance. The rating of material quality from superior hypes such as granite to marginal types such as conglomerate is too simplistic but may be useful in a preliminary way. Regardless, the market is dominated by limestone/dolomite material types because of their widespread availability. Certain tests that have been standardized are widely accepted and used for evaluating stone as riprap and armor. These tests are adapted from those used extensively for concrete aggregate; they explore the resistance of the rock to destructive processes such as abrasion, freeze-thaw, and wet-dry environmental attack. The field evaluation of the rock source is often as important as testing. Important limitations imposed by natural jointing and variations of bedding are documented in this manner. The field examination also supports the testing by estimating how much of the quarry is rep¬resented by each of the samples to be tested. Finally, quarrying and processing methods and transportation are carefully considered in regard to stone quality, average size, size gradation, and cost.

INTRODUCTION Several major factors introduce uncertainties into the assessment of radon progeny exposure to miners using time-weighted average radon progeny concentrations: uncertainty in the measurement of radon progeny concentrations in specific areas, assignment of an individual miner's time to those areas, variation in radon progeny concentration between measurements and potential human errors involved in calculating concentrations and handling data. The currently available grab-sampling methods for determining working level were analyzed to determine the magnitude of the uncertainty due to each of these factors. For all measurement methods studied, the variation in the airborne concentration with time in operational areas of a mine is the dominant factor in the uncertainty in determining annual radon progeny exposures for individual miners. Uncertainties relating to accuracy of the method and precision of measurement were found to contribute a significantly greater portion of the total uncertainty than human errors. Under normal conditions, if the technicians performing the measurements are conscientious and well trained, human error contributes little to the total uncertainty of the radon progeny exposure determination. The primary goal of radiation monitoring is the reduction of radiation exposure to the lowest reasonably achievable level below regulatory limits. Monitoring personnel in mines should be trained not only to obtain accurate estimates of miner radiation exposures but also to recognize and, when possible, to implement correction of situations which result in unnecessarily high radon progeny exposures. ESTIMATION OF UNCERTAINTY DUE TO HUMAN ERRORS Human errors affecting the assignment of annual radon progeny exposure to individual miners can be placed in two categories: those related to the measurement of radon progeny concentration in specific mine areas and those related to estimation of occupancy time for individual miners and transcribing data to permanent records. The former are specific for the measurement method used; the latter are common to all methods. Errors in Determination of Working Level All systems for determining radon progeny concentration require measurement of several parameters, which include volume of air sampled, count rate and decay time. These quantities and appropriate constants are used in a basic equation, specific to the system, which estimates working level. An unintentional random mistake in measurement of any one of these parameters or in the selection of proper constants will contribute to the uncertainty in the determination of working level. In our analysis of human error we separated each measurement method into a sequence of independent operations, with each step subject to operator error. For each operation we estimated the probability of occurrence and the consequence of errors to obtain a resulting uncertainty. Certain types of errors result in specific consequences. For example, we assumed that an error of 5 seconds in timing of a 5-minute sample results in a fractional error of 1/60 (1.7%). Other types of errors can result in a range of uncertainty. Transposing digits read from a scaler can produce errors ranging from near zero to approximately 60%. In these cases we calculated the statistical variance for the distribution of errors. We assigned the square root of the variance divided by the mean as the consequence factor for that type of error. This is essentially the same as a coefficient of variation. The product of the probability of occurrence and the consequence factor is the fractional uncertainty in the measurement due to that particular error. The total uncertainty due to human errors is calculated by taking the square root of the sum of the squares of the uncertainties generated by all manual operations. Uncertainties Due to Human Error for the Kusnetz Method One of the techniques most commonly used to estimate working level in U.S. uranium mines is the Kusnetz method. A generalized way to express the equation used to compute WL by this method is: WL = (Net Alpha Counts)/(V)(ST)(CT)(E)(K) where: V = sample flow rate in liters/min ST = sampling time in min CT = counting time in minutes E = absolute counting efficiency K = Kusnetz conversion factor (dis/min-L per WL), as a function of decay time in minutes. The example of human error analysis presented here is based on the Kusnetz procedure having a timing sequence of 5 minutes sampling time, 40 minute decay time, 2 minute counting time. During the sampling procedure a stop watch is used to determine the timing interval. We assume that it is common to make small timing errors of a few seconds, but larger timing errors occur infrequently. Errors greater than 30 seconds are considered to be essentially non-existent since we assume that the

INTRODUCTION Probably the most important family of chemicals used in mineral processing today is a category of basic commodity chemicals loosely denoted as pH regulators. Typical chemicals which are referred to as pH regulators include lime, magnesium hydroxide, soda ash, caustic soda, ammonia, sulfuric acid, and hydrochloric acid. These chemicals are often used in very significant amounts in almost all of the major mineral processing operations such as flotation, hydrometallurgy, etc. (in dosages up to ten pounds per ton of feed ore treated). While cheaper in cost per unit weight of chemical than more specific chemicals such as collectors, frothers, extractents, etc., the overall cost to the mill operator is generally higher with pH regulators per ton of ore processed than with any other given processing chemical. For example, a rough rule of thumb in sulfide mineral flotation is that the cost of lime is double that of the collector(s) used. The symbol pH is used to designate hydrogen ion concentration. When acids, salts, and bases are dissolved in water, individual molecules are dissociated into their constituent radicals or ions. The strength of an acid or a base increases with the extent of such dissociation or ionization. An alkaline solution is one in which the number of Qydroxyl ions (OH ) exceeds the hydrogen ions (H ). In an acid solution, the hydrogen ions predominate. In either case, both ions are always present as water itself ionizes to a limited extent, that is: [ ] The pH scale is logarithmic and the pH value is the negative of the logarithm (base 10) of the molar concentration of hydrogen ions per liter of solution. For example, a pH of 5 means that the molar concentration of hydrogen ions per liter is 0.00001 (1 x 10-5). Likewise, a pH of 9 means that the molar concentration of hydrogen ions per liter is 1 x 10-9. Normally, the relationship between hydrogen ion and hydroxyl ion concentration is based on the relationship: Concentration of H ion x concentration of OH- ion = constant. Eq. (1) In dilute and/or moderately concentrated solutions that are normally used in mineral procygsing processes, the constant at 25°C is 10-14. On the pH scale, the value of pH equal to 7 represents the hydrogen ion concentration of a neutral solution. pH values lower than pH 7 indicate increasing acidity and higher values than 7 indicate alkalinity. Table 1 shows the nature of the pH scale at 25°C. Temperature affects the extent of ionization of dissolved acids, salts, bases, and water so that the hydrogen ion concentration (hence pH) of a solution is also affected by temperature. As a means of demonstrating this dependency, Table 2 shows the change of the exponent of the constant (base 10) in Eq. 1 and the pH value corresponding to neutrality as a function of temperature. It is also important, for example, that alkalinity or acidity expressed by pH not be confused with total alkalinity or total acidity. For example, total alkalinity is commonly determined by titration with a standard acid solution (usually HC1). pH is a measure of the hydroxyl ion concentration of an alkaline solution, whereas titration is a measure of an alkaline solution's acid neutralizing capacity. Thus, if one takes a series of various alkaline solutions prepared using different chemicals but all of exactly the same pH (and temperature) and then subsequently carries out a titration on each solution with a standard acid, it would be observed that the various alkaline solutions would neutralize entirely different amounts of acid. As an example, 0.08 grams of caustic (NaOH) , 6.32 grams of soda ash (Na2CO3), and 8.17 grams of ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH) all have a pH of 11.3 at 25°C. One liter of each of the above solutions neutralizes 0.073, 4.348 and 8.496 grams of HC1, respectively. An airborne dust survey was conducted at the Arthur W. White mine of Dickenson Mines Limited by CANMET/MRL and Dickenson Mines Limited Staff in April 1990 for the purpose of evaluating environmental conditions underground and in the surface mining plants. The survey was designed to measure respirable silica, total arsenic and lead concentrations at several workplaces. In addition, settled dust and rock samples were collected from workplaces and analysed for total arsenic content. More importantly, arsenic exposure data were needed to evaluate the impact of Ontario Regulation 176/86 as amended by Ontario Regulation 23/87. A total of 165 area and personal air filter samples were collected during the study. Of these, 85, 67 and 13 samples were for arsenic, silica and lead respectively. Sampling aid analyses were performed according to the Ontario Ministry of Labour Regulations. More than 90% of the workplaces sampled for respirable silica, total arsenic and lead were below the Ontario Ministry of Labour Regulations; and 10% of the workplaces sampled for arsenic shaved concentrations above the Threshold Limit value (TLV) proposed in the Ontario Regulation 176/86 as amended by Ontario Regulation 23/87. These results were used to identify occupations and/or workplaces where more sampling and control measures were required respirable silica, total arsenic and lead. This paper describes the results of the dust sampling program conducted at Dickenson Mines Limited.

A research project was undertaken to determine if coal addition tofluxed-magnetite pre-fired pellets would reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx)emissions during pellet induration. Iron oxidation rate tests, coal oxidation rate tests and calcination rate tests were conducted in a laboratory furnace to determine the amount of coal necessary to provide adequate heat for limestone calcination without producing detrimental effects to magnetite oxidation. Pilot scale pot-grate tests were then performed with and without coal in the pre-fired pellets to verify pellet quality parameters and nitrogen oxide emissions. The off-gas during each pot-grate test was analyzed for NOx, CO2, CO, SOx, and O2. There was approximately a ten percent reduction in NOx emissions with coal addition during the normal pot-grate firing cycle. There was a 75% reduction in NOx emissions during firing cycles that used 25% to 75% excess air during firing rather than the normal 300% excess air.

Two weathering procedures are being developed by the Acid Drainage Technology Initiative in cooperation with federal agencies(OSM and EPA). Objects are to: (1) standardize existing humidity cell and leaching column procedures; (2) improve test methods by maintaining a carbon dioxide enriched environment needed to optimize carbonate mineral dissolution, and quantifying particle size variables to evaluate reaction kinetics, and (3) provide flexibility in test method implementation consistent with EPA guidelines for Performance-Based Measurement Systems. Preliminary results indicate the CO2enriched leaching environments produce alkalinities that are similar to field observations and greater than the tests run under atmospheric PCO2. Leaching columns produce higher alkalinity than humidity cells.

The Finniss River system in tropical northern Australia has received 'acid-drainage' contaminants from the Rum Jungle uranium/copper mine site over the past 4 decades. Following mine-site remediation that began in 1981-82 the annual contaminant loads of sulfate, Cu, Zn and Mn have declined by factors of 3, 7, 5 and 4, respectively over 1990-93, compared to the 1969-74 pre-remediation loads. Comparison of the frequency distributions of contaminant water concentrations over these pre- and post-remedial periods have shown varying degrees of reduction in the highest levels following mine-site remediation, that are consistent with reductions in their annual-cycle loads. Among the three selected major metal contaminants the reductions in maximum water concentrations are most pronounced for Cu. The demonstrated reductions in the highest water concentrations of all four contaminants are also associated with previously reported ecological improvement in the Finniss River system, compared to the benchmark of environmental detriment established in 1973fl4, prior to the beginning of remediation at the mine site.

Over the past few years, the School of Mines of Paris has carried out a program of research* on the grade-tonnage relationships in the border zones of porphyry copper deposits. The initial problem was quite difficult : how does the grade vary at the border of the known orebodies? Does it decrease regularly, or do some thresholds exist, where the grade diminishes abruptly? The answer to these questions have important repercussions on the prediction of the future reserves in the fringe of the orebodies. If the grade decreases regularly, very important reserves could exist; if not, there would be strong limitations to the possible recoverable reserves. The first step of our study was a critical study of previous work done on the subject. It appeared that, following Lasky's pioneering paper (Lasky, 1950), most of the authors used what we can call an historical approach to the problem. In this, the grade-tonnage relationships are calculated from the available figures for production and reserves and the results are then extrapolated to the future. The strong limitation of this model are brought out in this article.

Geologically and commercially, the term diatomite is applied to the nearly pure sedimentarv accumulation of diatom frustules- the microscopic skeletons of unicellular aquatic algae belonging to the class of golden brown algae, bacillariophyceae. The sediments are fine-grained, siliceous, and consist primarily of amorphous opaline silica with only minor amounts of organic residue, secondary minerals, and co-deposited non-diatomaceous or crystalline clastic debris. In the geological sense, the name diatomite implies sedimentary accumulations that have reached appreciable thickness and when thick enough, such accumulations consequently may have possible commercial potential. Although the term diatomite is popularly and inappropriately applied to any sediment in which there is an abundance of diatom frustules, alternative terminology is more correctly employed to describe the less pure diatomaceous sediments, for example: clay-bearing diatomite or diatom-bearing clay. Synonyms in current usage include diatomaceous earth and kieselghur. More antiquated and obsolete terminology includes tripoli-powder, tripolite, and infusorial earth. Worldwide, diatomites occur within Tertiary to Recent lacus- trine and marine sedimentary facies. Although diatomite is wide- spread throughout the world, deposits that contain high purity, commercially versatile ore are uncommon. Physical properties of the diatom and of processed diatomite that provide unique commercial value in a broad spectrum of market end-uses include ornate fine structure, low bulk density, and high porosity and surface area. Properties of equal importance are mild abrasiveness, high absorptive capacity, insulating ability, relative inertness, and high brightness. End-use markets are diverse and range from insulating brick and absorbents through quality sensitive filter aids and premium quality functional fillers. Notwithstanding both the economic attractiveness of the specialty markets and the commercial versatility of the high purity deposits, deposits of lesser purity are mined in nearly all parts of the world for less demanding uses. Mining costs are minimized through open pit quarrying, but in Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America underground mining methods are also employed. Blasting is not required because diatomite is soft and easily broken loose with mechanized equipment. Following gentle crushing, the ore is dried, milled, and processed into one of three broad categories of products: naturally milled, straight calcined, and flux calcined grades. Each of these principal categories is further subdivided into additional grades through particle size adjustment of the powders. Agglomeration of particles, alteration of fine structure, and color change are achieved through calcination. Flux calcination further accentuates these changes. Production throughout the world is dominated by the United States, followed by Romania, the former Soviet republics, and France. Other major producers include Spain, Mexico, Iceland, Korea, Japan, and Germany. Denmark is a major producer of Moler earth products, which consist of a diatomite-clay mixture. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The first industrial use of diatomite can be traced back some 2000 years to the Greeks and to the use of diatomaceous earth as a component in lightweight building brick and in ceramic pottery. It was not until the mid-1800s, however, that the unique properties of diatomite were first recognized and the market end-uses explored and developed. One of the most important of the early uses followed the development of dynamite by Alfred Nobel in the mid-1860s, whereupon diatomite was used as a component of the explosive to improve stability and safety. Other early uses included low temperature insulating and refractory bricks and as a component in insulating and fireproofing construction panels. During the 1920s, processing technology underwent a very rapid evolution with the development of calcination, flux calcination, and air classification technologies. Through these technologies, innumerable different size and grade classifications could be made for market applications and for rapidly diversified end- uses. Today, the application of processed diatomite for filter aid is the largest of the quality sensitive end-uses. Specific filtration uses include the clarification of beer, wine and liquor, vegetable oil, syrup and sugar, pharmaceuticals, and swimming pool water, to name a few. As a functional filler and extender, processed diatomite is ideally suited for application in paint, rubber, and plastic formulations. Other filler applications include use as an anti-blocking agent in plastic film, anti-caking agent for fertilizer, thermal insulating material, catalyst carrier, polish, abrasive, pesticide and fertilizer carrier, and chromatographic supports. Throughout much of the world diatomite is still used as a component of insulating brick and as an absorbent.

Caterpillar introduced 21 new products during Caterpillar Press Days ‘96, held in June at the company’s proving grounds near Tucson, AZ. The event, billed as the largest product introduction ever held by Caterpillar, was attended by press from around the world. Most of the new products were demonstrated at Caterpillar’s Tinaja Hills Training Center in the Sierrita Mountains south of Tucson. Under the scorching Sonora Desert sun, the press was treated to demonstrations of the new equipment. After a display of the equipment’s power and capabilities, the press was given an opportunity to operate the new models and, in some cases, compare them with the old.

Advances in borehole geophysical research for mineral assaying, and remote detection of mineralization away from the borehole. Nuclear activation measurement research has provided accurate in situ assays of economic metals with neutron-gamma activation, using a high resolution intrinsic-germanium detector. Although nuclear activation analysis is the present "best-hope" for obtaining in situ assays for some elements, gamma-gamma and magnetic susceptibility measurements can provide accurate assays for lead-zinc and magnetite, respectively. Borehole optical spectroscopy and x-ray fluorescence are being investigated as possible in situ assaying techniques for some minerals. More laboratory and field calibration research is needed before nonlinear complex resistivity (NLCR) can be routinely used as a quantitative assaying tool. Field tests have shown that variations in the local geologic environment can affect the quantitative accuracy of assay values from downhole NLCR measurements. Deeply penetrating borehole geophysical methods are increasingly being used for mineral exploration as drilling costs and exploration have increased. Borehole electrical measurements have been shown to be useful for detecting conductive orebodies that are not interesected by a drillhole. Hole-to-surface resistivity, and surface-to-hole time-domain electromagnetics are demonstrated to be particularly effective for defining mineralized zones in a massive sulfide environment. Borehole gravity meters and three-component magnetometers have been developed and should prove useful for defining geologic anomalies away from the drillhole.
