Computer based signal processing techniques for obtaining empirical dynamic models from measured mill circuit data are discussed. This modelling is the first step towards designing a particle size control strategy. Experimental data from a computerized acquisition sys tern is examined and analysed, and a number of model identification procedures are applied. The resulting models are compared and a suitable model is selected, illustrating the benefits of computer tools for control system design.

The lower Middle Cambrian phosphorite deposits of the Georgina Basin shown in Figure 1 were found in the period 1966-1968 by three companies, namely, International Minerals and Chemical Corporation, Continental Oil Corporation and Broken Hill South Limited. Of these deposits the significant ones are Duchess, Sherrin Creek, D Tree, Lady Annie, Lady Jane, and Wonarah which together aggregate several billion tons reserves of phosphate. Due to the economic factors of freight costs to the coast and softening of the world market price for rock phosphate, none of them is in production, nor is any in the development stage. This paper reviews the historical background to the discovery of these deposits and then deals principally with the discovery of non-outcropping phosphorites in the Barkly Tablelands of Northern Territory by the interpretation of gamma radiation logs of abandoned water bores.

Regulations on sulfur emissions have caused the electric utilities to evaluate various methods of meeting them. Low-sulfur, low-volatile coals can be burned alone or blended with high-volatile? coals. This option may be a cost-effective alternative to the installation of scrubbers on coal-fired combustion systems. In some blending applications, problems may be encountered because the low sulfur content and high calorific value of the low-volatile or other clean coal allow it to economically upgrade extremely poor quality coal. While this is done to meet specification purposes, actual boiler performance may be dominated by the poorer quality coal. Thus, the reputation of the low-volatile or other clean coal suffers. As a result of laboratory and full scale testing, conducted over the last five years, a model has been developed to evaluate the relative combustion characteristics of various coals and coal blends. A database for different coals has been gathered. This paper presents the model and shows how power plants and coal mine personnel can use it to evaluate their coals from different sources. It can be used to blend two or more coals from different sources so that thee blended coal has flame stability characteristics which are similar to those of the baseline coal.

For the commercial production of iron ore pellets from hematite ores, as it is practiced in various pellet plants, the addition of lime has shown to be an efficient means with a view to improving cold compression and abrasive strength of the indurated pellets considerably. Unfortunately, it has also been shown at the same time, that the metallurgical properties as, for instance, swelling behavior, softening during reduction under load and disintegration of the grain, can be adversely affected to a high degree. In the course of smelting tests carried out by renowned steelworks, blast furnace operation was heavily disturbed by the swelling and early softening of the pellets, also by their disintegration in the low-temperature range, which altogether led to a considerable lowering of the smelting rate (1, 2, 3).

In the past 30 years, there have been tremendous advancements in the uses and applications of column flotation. From their first use as final cleaners that could produce excellent grades at the cost of recoveries, columns are now being used in every stage of the flotation circuit as well as is SX-EW. Columns as roughers, final scavengers and even at the end of CIL circuits, are finding their way into the marketplace. Operational results of these new uses are presented. INTRODUCTION Flotation columns have been in use since the early 1950's in the U.S. (Hollingsworth, 1952) and the early 1960's in Canada (Trembley, Boutin, Wheeler, 1963). Application of column flotation has been somewhat diverse. In the early years, columns were used predominately for molybdenum cleaning in Canada and for phosphate flotation in the United States. Unfortunately, results met with skepticism and disdain as the columns were hard to operate, temperamental and although producing high grades, could not achieve acceptable recoveries. Since the inception of column flotation technology, the degree of knowledge for design and operation of columns has vastly improved. Despite improvements in the technology, there is still some reluctance by mineral producers to investigate the use of column flotation cells for processing stages other than cleaner flotation. This characterization is in part due to the proven advantage of flotation columns in reducing gangue entrainment in the froth product which results in higher grade products and/or fewer processing stages. Also, during the development of column technology, different types of spargers have been used with varying degrees of success. Furthermore, the general knowledge base of parameters affecting column flotation design and operation have advanced tremendously. Inefficient, or primitive, sparger design, coupled with the lack of column design and operating knowledge and experience, resulted in poor metallurgical and mechanical performance in many cases. Unfortunately, this lack of knowledge caused many column installations to be characterized as failures. The industry felt that columns could not achieve high recoveries, especially when dealing with coarse particles. Therefore, columns were characterized as cleaners, where low recoveries could be tolerated as recirculating loads rather than direct losses and froth cleaning advantages of the quiescent column flotation regime could be realized. Fortunately for the minerals industry, some producers have stood at the forefront of technology and allowed the column to be utilized for new applications. In the last decade, column flotation applications have expanded to virtually every mineral system and plant location throughout the world. The expanded application of columns has generated a new wave of interest for processing various streams. One of the most notable is in the use of columns as rougher cells. This is of particular interest to "green-field" plants and plants where expansions are taking place. Here, metallurgical superiority can be combined with maximum capital and operating cost advantages for a rapid return on investment. The superior results experienced to date, have generated a cohesive vision of the future in mineral processing where flotation columns function as single stage primary separation devices (roughers) with a single stage cleaner, if necessary. The advantages of column flotation go far beyond their original uses. We now have seen columns used as final tail scavengers, in SX-EW plants and even at the end of CIL circuits. Some of these cases will be reviewed. CASE STUDIES In an attempt to show the diversification of column flotation to many facets of the mineral processing plant, a variety of case studies will be discussed. Some of these were designed by the authors while others have been provided by plant sources. It is important to note that in each successful case, the columns were designed using the author's design and scale-up approach. Depending upon the application of a sampling and weighing system or the use intended, inaccuracies can result in an eco¬nomic loss of income or a loss in quality of the process. It inevitably results in a loss of control of ones costs. The accuracy of samp¬ling and weighing systems is today extremely important, as they are recognized to be the key components of the overall management system designed to provide both quantitative and qualitative control. This paper will be confined to the weighing systems only and will deal with various as¬pects of system design, calibration and opera¬tions. Special emphasis will be placed on new developments and requirements in this field.

This paper review s several new applications of solvent extraction developed in conjunction with a research project carried out under the AEC Raw Materials Division by the Dow Western Division laboratories during the last two years. A process for recovery of uranium from ores by contacting the solid directly with organic solvent without a prior aqueous leach and a process for uranium recovery by contacting thick, unfiltered leach slurry with the solvent were studied in an attempt to simplify ad reduce the cost of ore treatment procedures. Processes to produce pure UF4 products at the concentrate mills thus eliminating the production and subsequent dissolution of the concentrate were investigated. Since many of the leach liquors contained vanadium as well as uranium, solvent extraction processes for by-product vanadium were also studied.

The truly educated man is better prepared to meet the challenge of the times. This challenge can be either beneficial or harmful depending upon one s orientation, Certainly man can no longer continue in the way of his father or even in the manner of his own previous experience as he seeks self-fulfillment, unless he is willing to sacrifice inner integrity--unless he is willing to compromise self-determination and self-expression. He must make a choice as society moves rapidly into high gear in the areas of automation and cybernetics. Industry, a unit of society, has a high stake in meeting this challenge, The better prepared and more mature its personnel, the better the end result as it attempts to meet the challenge. It therefore has a vital concern in proper training of such personnel, that their contribution will be of maximum quality. The specialized training required demands a broad liberal arts background which gives the individual a wider perspective upon which to base judgment. This greatly aids his development as he enters graduate school or goes directly into industry. In either case, his value to industry is enhanced. It would seem that the small liberal arts college provides the best environment for such a program, Consideration of several factors will, I hope, throw some light on the severity of the problem.

Lead ions that originate from galena during the processing of complex sulfide ores migrate onto the surfaces of sphalerite and iron sulfide minerals. This results in poor selectivity during differential flotation. Generally, in sulfide ore processing, the lead-activated minerals float in the Cu/Pb rougher circuit. The surface lead complicates the zinc flotation circuit by lowering the concentrate grade. The effect of lead in the differential flotation of sphalerite from Cu-Pb-Zu and Pb-Zu ores is discussed. Plant and laboratory-test data are interpreted by determining the surface compositions of individual grains of sphalerite and iron sulfide particles. For the first time, surface compositions were determined by using laser-ionization mass spectrometry (LIMS) and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS). Cationic and cationic species on the surface were analyzed to elucidate the phenomena. It was proven that these new techniques are very useful in understanding the basic mechanisms of a sulfide mineral-flotation system.

An auxiliary cross-pit mining system, working in tandem with the prime excavator, is evaluated technically, operationally and economically for application in the selective removal and replacement of soils and unconsolidated ovezburden. Previous studies on cross-pit technology and applications of this technology are briefly reviewed. Stratigraphy plus pit, operating and economic parameters are assumed and applied in the evaluation and comparison of a base case dragline system with two alternatives - a dragline/scraper-dozer combination and a drag- line/cross-pit system combination. The economics of the proposed cross-pit system favour it as a viable alternative to conventional systems.

It is common to nine a coal seam affected by previous extraction of a coal seam below. As a result of that severe problems may occur during the extraction process. This paper presents the analysis of undermining effects based on field observations. A simplified method for the evaluation of risk in undermining operations is presented and predictions of the degree of possible damages to the undermined coal seam is given.

Based on the premise that understanding the fundamental mechanics of fine fragment formation in coal will lead to reducing coal dust problems in mines, a thorough study of the mechanics of crack propagation in coal was undertaken. Two approaches were considered in an attempt to understand and quantify the fracture process as it relates to fine fragment formation. In one approach, theoretical models are used which describe the size of the fracture process zone which may relate to the amount of structural damage and fine fragment formation on the new crack surface. The other approach is based on the relationship between crack tip stress intensity and new surface appearance for mixed mode crack propagation. Preliminary observations with a scanning electron microscope support the premise that fine fragment formation is related to fracture surface appearance and fracture initiation conditions. An experimental program designed to supply the input parameters for these approaches is presently underway. The experimentation features mixed mode fracture toughness testing, using a special mixed mode testing rig, and fracture velocity measurements with a crack propagation gage. The interpretation of this data via the approaches discussed will provide further under- standing of the mechanics of fine fragment formation in coal.

Since the decade of the 1990s is nearly upon us, I have focused on what I see are the likely trends featured in new large underground coal mines 10 years from now. I do this from the vantage point of having been involved in the installation of large mines for more than twenty years. Little of the equipment resources we have available today was unknown when I entered the coal business in 1960. There were continuous miners, longwalls and diesel-powered equipment in Europe, monitoring systems, computers, heavy media separation systems, froth flotation and conveyors then as there are now. A substantial evolutionary process has occurred with these and other mining machines and processes. Some evolved only to die out, such as boring-type continuous miners; others, such as longwall systems, flourished. My intuition tells me that since there have been largely evolutionary rather than revolutionary developments in the near past, the same is true of the future, at least for the next 10 years. In other words, the elements of what are in the future are with US now. Some, such as computer-based applications, may evolve beyond our wildest dreams -but I doubt it.

A mine fire represents one of the most dangerous and challenging safety issues facing underground mine operators. Given the right circumstances, a mine fire can occur at any location in the active or abandoned mine workings, can quickly grow beyond control, and threaten the welfare and livelihood of the entire underground workforce. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), in partnership with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), has been conducting an in-depth program of research addressing mine fire prevention, early and reliable fire detection, and mine fire suppression technologies. One portion of this program is focused on understanding the characteristics of mine fire combustion products and flame spread through large scale deep-seated (firmly established) fire tests and use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling. In this study, two deep-seated fire tests were conducted; one fire consisted of coal material and the other utilized the two most abundant fuel sources found in a coal mine: coal and wooden cribbing blocks. The fires were burned to completion while the combustion products were collected and analyzed. In addition, an array of thermocouples was placed within the body of the material to measure flame spread rate. The coal fire test information was then used to develop a CFD model of the fire. This paper describes the fire tests, provides insight into characteristics of flame spread, and presents the CFD modeling work results.

The recent mine disasters in Australian coal mines have initiated an introduction of Self-Contained Self-Rescuer (SCSR) as component in the development of new escape strategies for miners. These self-contained self-rescuers are closed circuit, demand sensitive breathing apparatus that make oxygen available to the wearer for a nominal period of time. Their operation is completely independent of the surrounding atmosphere. Once properly donned, the SCSR can assist a miner to escape from an area containing smoke, toxic gases or an oxygen deficient atmosphere. The duration of a typical SCSR is usually taken at the point of complete collapse of the breathing bag which is accompanied by an increase in breathing resistance and inhaled levels of carbon dioxide. Because the oxygen consumption (V02) and the heart rate are correlated, a prediction of V02 and consequently the duration of an SCSR can be made by monitoring the heart rate. Thirty-seven volunteers participated in field simulated escape trials at four underground coal mines. The results from the field trials suggested that oxygen consumption depends on the heart rate, the body weight and exercise rating of the miner. All the volunteers were asked to fill out the questionnaires to evaluate the performance of the units. The miners indicated that they could tolerate the inhaled temperature without any difficulty to breathing resistance. A complete statistical analysis of the field results is also presented.

Preliminary geophysical surveys for nickel deposits are usually carried out by airborne magnetometer and surface electrical methods. Once an anomaly is discovered by these techniques, one must resort to chemistry to identify nickel and determine its concentration. Consequently, a method to determine nickel quickly and quantitatively at the exploration site could help guide detailed sampling and provide analytical data that might otherwise be delayed at distant laboratories. In addition, borehole probes capable of indicating nickel in the rock adjacent to the hole, should prove attractive to the exploration geologist. With these needs in mind, preliminary investigations have been made to demonstrate an in situ analytical technique which appears feasible for nickel exploration. The method depends on the very high energy gamma rays emitted when nickel absorbs a thermal or low energy neutron. These neutron capture gamma rays should be distinguished from the lower energy gamma rays emitted during decay of radioactive nuclides as in conventional activation analysis.

A comparison of gold, platinum and sulfide ion selective electrodes was made for determination of Eh in solutions containing hydrosulfide ions as a model system. The comparison was made in terms of the accuracy of the measured response, response time, pH dependence, and reproducibility of measurement. The sensitivity of each electrode towards changes in hydrosulfide ion concentration was measured in terms of the change in measured Eh per decade change in concentration. On the basis of a detailed investigation of the electrode processes occurring at the surface of gold and platinum electrodes, it was postulated that within the pH range investigated these electrodes respond to changes in the hydrosulfide ion concentration in solution. In comparison, the sulfide ion selective electrode is known to respond to changes in the sulfide ion activity in solution. Although the potentials measured with gold and platinum electrodes were mixed potentials, pretreatment procedures can be used to obtain a signal suitable for process control. For control of hydrosulfide ions in flotation pulps, the use of a gold electrode pretreated at 1.0 V with respect to a standard hydrogen electrode is recommended.

A quality assurance program consists of all those activities aimed at providing confidence to the purchaser that the suppliers quality system will provide a product that will satisfy the purchaser's stated quality requirement. An organizing principle is necessary for prioritizing the quality control activities of quality personnel in the face of a myriad of technical possibilities, data-analytic applications, and an overwhelming number of possible activities promoted in the literature and by quality "gurus". The organizing principle I like is that quality assurance exists when those involved in the quality process: (1) know what they are supposed to do, (2) can tell if they are doing it and are set up to continue doing it and, (3) if they are not, they can remedy the situation in a timely fashion. Any incremental activity which facilitates this organizing principle is a continuous improvement activity. That activity which has the chance to facilitate this principle to the greatest extent is the next one to work on. In these days of lean corporate and regional staffs it is as important to know what not to work on as it is to know what to work on. In this paper I shall discuss in general terms the implications of this organizing principle for the design of Quality Assurance (QA) Programs for coal mines and also provide some comments about the application of Statistical Process Control (SPC) methodologies in the coal industry.

The Cerro Vanguardia mine is an AngloGold Limited operation in southern Argentina that includes multiple open pits and a hybrid Merrill-Crowe and CIL circuit to recover gold and silver from oxide ore. Operations were commissioned at the site in 1998, which included a plant in the metallurgical circuit to recover cyanide from mill tailings. The cyanide recovery plant was initially configured to process tailings slurry and achieved greater than 90% cyanide recovery from tailings containing about 600 to 800 mg/L WAD cyanide (as CN). The cyanide recovery circuit was operated in this manner for approximately eight months, during which time the consumption of sulphuric acid and sodium hydroxide was relatively high, leading to high rates of scale formation in the acidification tank and stripping towers. In July 1999, several piping changes were made in the cyanide recovery system to permit its operation with clear solution, which reduced the sulphuric acid consumption and eliminated scale formation in process equipment. The cyanide recovery system currently operates with a two-stage counter-current decantation (CCD) circuit which provides clear solution for processing in the cyanide recovery plant. The cyanide recovery efficiency now averages about 90% to 92% from solution containing about 350 mg/L WAD cyanide (as CN). Recovered sodium cyanide now accounts for about two-thirds of the total cyanide added to the leaching circuit. This paper presents a description of the cyanide recovery plant and details regarding its current operating efficiency.
