Hydrocyclones and other dynamic separators are normally fed with pulps of water and solid particles. The particles have different sizes, shapes and densities and, except in the special case of mono-characteristic particles, are segregated into size, shape and density. Segregation is magnified by the high values of centrifugal acceleration in the hydrocyclones. This paper develops the theory of the segregation, indicates the major variables involved and reports experimental data of segregation under different operating conditions for mixtures of magnetite and/or ferrosilicon and non-magnetic minerals.

As the 2017 president of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Inc., I am pleased to present the 2017 issue of the Transactions of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Inc., Vol. 342. A significant portion of the contribution that we make as a professional society is the publication of professional and technical papers that accelerate the advancement of scientific knowledge and enable the transfer of technology. Communication within the mining community is the key to a successful society. This technology exchange continues a tradition that dates back to the 1871 meeting of 22 mining engineers in Wilkes-Barre, PA, that resulted in the founding of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (AIME). Those individuals envisioned that these transaction volumes “would form a most valuable and greatly needed addition to our professional literature.” This volume fulfills that pledge. The 2017 Transactions contains some of the most interesting research and insights from the past year and features an international slate of authors spanning industry, academia and government. Papers include the latest findings from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), a special review article on Heap Leach Modeling, and articles from two Special Issues on Rare Earths. The 2017 Transactions consists of a total of 54 technical papers, encompassing all 21 papers published in 2017 in the Technical Papers Section of Mining Engineering (Vol. 69) and all 24 papers published in 2017 in Minerals & Metallurgical Processing (Vol. 34). Additionally, this volume contains 9 papers that are being published for the first time in this issue. The papers presented in this volume were written by some of the most distinguished professionals in the industry worldwide. All of the technical papers were peer-reviewed. The process of review and publication requires much hard work by authors, reviewers and our Publications staff. As the 2017 president of SME and on behalf of all our members, I would like to extend our gratitude to all whose volunteer efforts contributed to the publication of this volume.

The concept of hypochlorite treatment prior to cyanidation in the heap leaching of low grade carbonaceous gold ores is discussed. Laboratory column leach tests using a low grade carbonaceous ore were performed to investigate the effects of pH, concentration, hypochlorite consumption, and bed height on the total gold extraction. At high pH, the hypochlorite stability increases and thus, hypochlorite consumption is decreased. At room temperature, the total gold extraction is proportional to the hypochlorite consumption. However, at some point additional hypochlorite consumption does not increase gold extraction. Gold recoveries of 10 and 80 percent are obtained for 12 and 167 lbs/ton hypochlorite consumption, respectively. Increasing hypochlorite concentration increases the rate of extraction. For a given hypochlorite consumption gold extraction was increased by shortening the ore column height. Finally, calcium hypochlorite is more effective than sodium hypochlorite.

Big data is generated from both surface and underground mining operations. Such data contain a wealth of information concerning safety and health in the workplace and production parameters. This paper will discuss the progress towards developing an accurate forecasting model for methane gas concentration based on the analysis of data collected from Atmospheric Monitoring Systems in underground coal mines employing time series models. Several procedures need to be applied to raw data, such as data cleaning and filtering for outlier removal, data homogenization and segmentation, and exploratory statistical analysis. The data analyzed were retrieved from two coal operations in the Eastern US. A negative correlation between barometric pressure and methane gas concentration was established, at least for certain data segments. Such correlations raise the possibility that barometric pressure data can predict variations of gas concentration in the mine. The datasets will be further investigated to establish the robustness of barometric pressure and gas concentration correlation and explore the dependence of gas concentration on other factors related to mine design and operations

"INTRODUCTION Ground support is a critical element in maintaining the stability of mining drives in deep and high stress mines. In challenging ground conditions, it is necessary to continuously explore ground support strategies that can control the resulting large deformations. It is an objective of mining operations to optimize the ground support by selecting both appropriate systems and the time of installation of each reinforcement element. A successful ground support strategy will result in the use of a system that ensures both the structural and operational integrity of the excavations and mitigates the need for rehabilitation. Preliminary ground support design is often based on empirical observations and methods. Once a design is implemented, field trials, observations and in situ pull tests are used to fine tune or improve the design. Although not often employed during this process, numerical modelling can provide helpful insights on the impact of different ground support strategies. In this respect, it is possible to explore the use of multiple options before selecting the most promising ground support system for implementation in field trials. The challenges associated with the numerical modelling of rock support for mines have been described by Lorig and Varona (2013) and Potvin (2017). The employed numerical models should capture all potential failure modes of reinforcement over the mining sequence of the excavation. In particular, it is important to emulate the observed in situ ground support performance, as well as the influence of the installation sequence of the support. However, the time and expertise required for this type of modelling of ground support is not often available at mine sites. Even when the expertise is available it requires a major time and commitment of resources to set up, run and calibrate the sophisticated models capable of explicitly capturing the behavior of ground support. Rock reinforcement is an integral part of all ground support systems used in underground mines. Long flexible tendons can reinforce the rock mass deeper into the walls and create a thicker reinforced shell around the underground excavation. This paper focuses on the optimization of the cable bolting strategy in squeezing conditions at the LaRonde Mine by integrating the 3D distinct element method (DEM) in the design process. A calibrated numerical model is used to investigate a series of cable bolt configurations and provide recommendations for the ground support design."

INTRODUCTION During the last decade, several studies in France (e.g., Perraud et al. , 1970; Chameaud et al., 1974, 1979 and 1980) and the United States (e.g., Stuart et al., 1978; Cross et al., 1978, 1980 and 1981) have demonstrated the systematic production of emphysema, fibrosis and tumors in the lungs of animals exposed to radon daughters alone or to mixtures of uranium-mine air contaminants. The studies in beagle dogs have been particularly interesting because of the uncertain etiology of the disease and the (apparently) diverse results of the studies at the University of Rochester and the Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL). In the Rochester studies, reported by Morken (1973), beagle dogs were exposed to "normal" room air dust loads and radon daughters from 200 to 10,000 WLM*, delivered in 1 to 50 days (rate of delivery, about 200 WLM per day of exposure). Histological examination of tissues was conducted at 1, 2 and 3 years after exposure for all exposure levels. No cancers were noted in these dogs that received estimated alveolar doses of 34 to 1700 rad (0.34 to 17 Gy). Pathologic changes were found only in the alveolar and bronchiolar regions of the lung. These changes were small, subtle, variable, and widely separated, involving only a very small fraction of lung tissue. Lesions appeared as focal thickening of alveolar septa, with some metaplasia of alveolar cells and some hyperplasia of bronchial epithelium. In the PNL experiments reported by Cross et al. (1978), beagle dogs were exposed in lifespan studies to mixtures of radon daughters (rate of delivery, about 14 WLM per day of exposure), uranium ore dust and cigarette smoke. One group of dogs was exposed to cigarette smoke alone. Except in control and smoke-only groups, the dogs died within 4' years of the first radon daughter exposure, or were killed when death appeared imminent because of pulmonary insufficiency (characterized by rapid, shallow breathing). Control and smoke-only animals were killed at periods corresponding to highmortality periods in the groups exposed to radon daughters and mixtures of uranium ore dust and cigarette smoke. Emphysema and fibrosis were much more prevalent and severe in the lungs of dogs exposed to the mixtures. These dogs also had adenomatous lesions, which progressed to squamous metaplasia of alveolar epithelium, epidermoid carcinoma and bronchioloalveolar carcinoma. Pathologic changes in the upper airways of these dogs were most prominent in the nasal mucosa, and included a few squamous carcinomas in the nasal cavity. Respiratory tract neoplasia was noted after ~4 years exposure and at cumulative exposures exceeding approximately 12,000 WLM. Apart from differences in associated carrier aerosol (room air dust vs. uranium ore dust) and radon-daughter exposure rate (200 WLM/day, shortduration exposure vs. 14 WLM/day, long-duration exposure), the most obvious difference in the Rochester and PNL studies was the observation time following exposure (3 years maximum vs. >4 years). Although neoplasia may not have been observed in the Rochester animals because of the earlier termination of the experiments, it is surprising that other lesions, such as prominent fibrosis and emphysema, were not reported. A follow-up study (reported here) is currently in progress at PNL to determine the pathogenic role of uranium ore dust alone and, in particular, to clarify the role of the ore dust in the production of the massive pulmonary fibrosis observed in the earlier study. Pulmonary function testing (a recently acquired capability) was included in the follow-up study as an indicator of progressive change in lung tissue. MATERIALS AND METHODS Chronic (4 hr/day, 5 days/week) exposures began when the dogs were about 2 1/2 years old. Two identical exposure chambers provided space for simultaneous, head-only exposure of 24 dogs to ~l5 mg/m3 carnotite uranium ore dust. An aerosol diffusion system was incorporated in each chamber in order to channel fresh aerosol past each dog's head; uranium ore dust was added to the inlet room air with Wright Dust Feed Mechanisms* (WDFM). Uranium ore dust and condensation nuclei concentrations were measured daily; chamber aerosols were monitored occasionally for particle-size distributions as described for previous hamster experiments (Cross et al., 1981). Bleeder entries are critically important to longwall mining for the moving of supplies, personnel, and the dilution of mine air contaminants. By design, these entries must stay open for many years for ventilation. Standing supports in moderate cover bleeder entries were observed, numerically modeled, and instrumented by researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The measurements of the installed borehole pressure cells (BPCs), standing support load cells and convergence meters, and roof extensometers are presented in this paper in addition to the numerical modeling results and visual observations made by the NIOSH researchers in the bleeder entries. The results include the effects of multiple panels being extracted in close proximity to the instrumented site as well as over one and a half years of aging. As expected, standing supports closer to the longwall gob showed the greatest load and convergence. The roof sag appeared generally independent of the proximity to the longwall gob. The BPC readings were driven by both the proximity to the gob and the depth into the pillar. The results of this study demonstrated that the entry roof can respond independently of the pillar and standing support loading. In addition, the rear abutment stress experienced by this bleeder entry design was minimal. The closer the mine development, pillar, or supports are to the gob, the greater the applied load due to rear abutment stress.

A.B. Rushton The work and resulting publications of the Committee on Underground Coal Mine Safety and The President's Commission on Coal were appropriate at the time of publication. The statistics cited in the publications appeared to be valid, and the actions proposed by the committee had merit. Although the actions proposed to achieve further improvements in safety may have been worthy of repeating, to associate statistics (Table 1) that are seven to eight years old with company names is bad. Statistics are readily available from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and are usually within three months of being up to date. A review of the most recent Coal Controlling Co. Report will reveal significant changes in the rankings. The more recent statistics should have been cited, or at least compared with those used in the article. Westmoreland Coal Co. is listed as having a 21.1 disabling injury rate for the period (1/78-12/80). The disabling injury rate for the Company for the year ending 1985 was 7.4 for the underground mines and 6.25 for the total facilities. Through March 1986, the dis- abling rate for the underground mines was 2.86. The management and employees of Westmoreland Coal Co. are committed to safety. The improvements achieved over the past five years attest to that commitment. We are justifiably proud of the achievement and dislike being misrepresented as in the April 1986 article Reply by E.M. Spokes I regret that the lapse of time since the original work gives a picture of safety practice that is no longer true today. That Westmoreland has reduced its disabling injury rate by 65% to 7.4 in 1985 is most commendable, and I congratulate you for this accomplishment. It is typical of the progress sought by the National Academy of Science and National Research Council when they funded the original study and published "Toward Safer Underground Coal Mines" in 1982. If a significant number of companies do as well as Westmoreland, the report will have served its purpose. Since the paper was primarily a condensation of the original report, it would not have been appropriate to seek access to later statistics. The purpose in seeking its publication at the time of presentation was to reach those who might have missed the original report. The fact that publication was delayed has not voided that purpose and may have reminded some who were aware of the original that its recommendations still apply to improvement of underground coal mine safety

The need for an integrated approach to optimization of unit operations in both the pit and the mill has long been recognized, but the complexity and nature of the overall problem has up to now resisted solution. This paper reports on a modeling methodology which couples symbolic and numeric computing to unify operations in both the pit and mill. The ultimate goal of this work is to optimize all operations that are influenced by blasting. Blasting plays a key role in all facets of operations. Obviously, drilling and blasting costs are determined by blast design, but the down-stream costs that are closely related to blasting results are often treated as separate functions: loading, hauling, cleanup, and crushing and grinding are all heavily influenced. Diggablilty and bucket fill factor are a function of fragmentation, the condition of the floor and uniformity in the shape of the muck pile. Likewise, cycle times and loading delays partially determine haul cycles, while fragmentation distribution and size determines the efficiency of truck loading. Removal and breakage of oversize causes loading delays and increases cleanup costs. The influence of blasting doesn't stop at the crusher. Mill productivity, power consumption, and maintenance are a function of the feed. Even at the SAG mill a reduction of a critical particle size during blasting can increase throughput. Thus, a bottle-neck for production far removed from unit operations in the pit can be alleviated by a modification in blast design. The question is: how do we optimize blasting with respect not only to itself but to al\ related mining and milling operations? For that matter, how do we even model blasting so that we can control the results of a blast?

The mechanism of cathodic decomposition of pyrrhotite was studied in deoxygenated solutions at natural, near neutral pH using potential and cyclic voltammetric measurements. Reaction products on pyrrhotite surfaces were examined by AES and XPS, and by analyzing the voltammograms for the electron balance of the reactions. Surface properties of the pyrrhotite/solution interface were characterized using ac impedance technique. The parameters of an equivalent circuit were determined by the nonlinear least squares fit (NLLSF) technique. The effect of cathodic polarization on floatability was investigated by micro-flotation tests. Possible implications to the flotation separation of chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite ores are discussed.

The United States is faced with increasing demands for electricity, coupled with continuing demands for crude oil and gas. Superimposed on these' national requirements are our national requirements for clean air and elimination of thermal pollution of our rivers. From the coal viewpoint, this situation is complicated still more by the rapid advances in nuclear power. In this paper, I hope to show a way to use our Western coals as a solution to this involved national problem by producing: 1. High quality crude 2. Low cost power 3. Economic byproducts We could expect these products to be made at one site in an integrated plant that would mine (extract) coal, process it, and convert it to electricity. Perhaps the most important attribute of the plant is its reduced water requirement and the elimination of air pollution from the power cycle. Quite logically, such a plant would probably recover valuable byproducts, such as pipeline gas, sulphur, cement, aluminum, and the like. Although the plant projected in this paper is a conceptual one, it is based on work now underway by Government and industry. Prediction of the future is a most hazardous occupation, but plants such as the one projected are based on current knowledge and can be expected to reach commercial operation in the near term future.

Mining in Mexico is one of its post traditional activities, whose influence in the development of important cities and communications has been decisive. Precious metals and, to some extent, copper and tin were known and used before the Colonial period, but from the sixteenth century to tie end of the nineteenth century, mining and metallurgical industries were concentrated in the precious metals, mainly silver. This silver was exported to Spain and other countries under the Spanish. Rule, Mexican peso was known world wide since the end of the sixteenth century and Mexico ranked as the first silver producer since the eighteenth century.

Kaolin is an important industrial mineral because it exhibits desirable properties in many applications and because of its relatively low cost, Approximately 2,000,000 tons of kaolin from Georgia and South Carolina are processed and used commercially in the United States each year. Strictly defined, the name kaolin is applied to a group of hydrous aluminum silicates of which the mineral kaolinite is the most common. Kaolinite has such desirable properties as natural whiteness, chernical stability, non- abrasiveness, and very fine particle size. Kaolinite particles are characteristically thin, flat, and hexagonal in outline. The particles range in size from submicron to as much as 40 microns (equivalent spherical diameter). In addition to the general properties mentioned in the first paragraph, it is soft, has low viscosity at high solids content in many systems, is readily wet and dispersed in water and some organic systems, and can be produced with a controlled particle size distribution. Some of the important physical constants of kaolin are: specific gravity, 2.60; index of refraction, 1.56; hardness (Mohs scale), 2; fusion temperature, 1850°C; dry brightness, 78-92 percent.1

The selectivity curve -- a continuous function which predicts the expected proportion of feed material of a particular size that will appear as coarse material -- is the preferred model for describing classification. In a previous paper (I), the authors presented a technique for determining the selectivity curve of a classifier from experimental data. The separation process is defined by a binomial distribution of the form [ ] where s(x), the probability of particles of size x reporting to the coarse stream, is obviously the selectivity value for material of size x.

"A biodegradable flocculant was produced during growth of Bacillus megaterium. The major component of the bioflocculant was found to be a polysaccharide composed of some proteins. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra analysis revealed the presence of carboxyl and hydroxyl groups in the bioflocculant, and thermal characterization by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed the transition and crystalline melting point at 90-105°C. The effects of bioflocculant dosage and pH on the flocculation of mineral suspensions were evaluated. The bioflocculant exhibited good flocculating capability on mineral suspensions and achieved flocculating efficiencies of 90 percent for kaolinite and 85 percent for hematite suspensions at a dosage of only 5 mL/L. The maximum arsenite removal was found to be 90 percent at a bioflocculant dosage of 2 g/L, which is better than traditional chemical flocculants. This study demonstrates that microbial bioflocculants have potential for application in environmental cleanup, such as in the flocculation of mineral fines and in the remediation of solutions that contain toxic heavy metals.IntroductionBioflocculants are biopolymers produced by microorganisms during their growths. The predominant components of a bioflocculant are extracellular polymeric substances such as glycoprotein, protein, cellulose and nucleic acid (Salehizadeh and Shojaosadati, 2001). Bioflocculants have gained much wider attention due to their biodegradability and safety. In recent years, the study of bioflocculants has attracted wide attention. Bioflocculants can be nontoxic, harmless and eco-friendly. Normally, they exhibit different functional properties, serving as stabilizer, dispersant or thickener. Among these properties, flocculation is of major interest. For example, Phormidium sp. strain J-1, isolated from a drainage channel, exhibited excellent flocculation activity for bentonite particles in liquid suspension (Fattom and Shilo, 1984). A protein bioflocculant produced by Rhodococcus erythropolis could efficiently flocculate suspended solids while losing their flocculating activity by enzymatic digestion (Kurane et al., 1994, Takeda et al., 1991). Klebsiella sp. strain S11 screened from activated sludge was unable to flocculate without the addition of calcium chloride (Dermlim et al., 1999)."

When extending the life of an existing mine in Appalachia, it is common to acquire the adjacent reserves and extend the existing mine into it. The existing mine is often renovated to accommodate the new conditions. The existing mining system and the track and belt haulage systems may he modified while the new property is integrated into the old one. All of these changes create new constraints for the mine ventilation system (MVS) that require proper planning and control procedures. This paper presents a study that was carried out for the ventilation system of a newly expanded underground coal mine in the Appalachian region. The process of correcting the ventilation system of the existing mine is discussed. That is followed by a discussion of some of the stages of controlling the expanded system. Numerical data for these steps are also presented.

That which follows is an elucidation of the many factors-in emulsion technology in application. Production scheduling is one of the most important factors affecting mine planning. A program -Mine Scheduler -that aids mining engineers with the setup of an optimum open pit production scheduling algorithm has been developed. A mathematical model for open pit scheduling that optimizes the Net Present Value of the cash flows was formulated. A simulated data is formulated as a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) problem. What's Best by Lindo Systems is used as the MILP solver in Microsoft Excel. The implementation of the algorithm focuses on problem setup, allowing users to easily evaluate, simplify, and develop the model that best fits their production scheduling.
