Continuous processing plants handling liquids have achieved a high degree of centralized automatic control. Many chemical plants are operated from one room, with automatic control of the various process flow rates. These plants know from experience that automatic control can produce higher through-put, better uniformity of product, decreased operating costs and reduction of storage capacity, Plants which process materials in the form of bulk solids have not been able to use control to as great an extent, primarily due to the lack of measuring equipment capable of providing the same types of continuous automatic control available with liquid flow meters. This paper will describe a scale for measuring flows of bulk materials on conveyor belts which is particularly adaptable to remote centralized instrumentation and automatic control, and will also describe some typical control applications. Fig. 1 illustrates the basic method of measurement of this scale. A conveyor belt idler is supported on a rigid carriage which in turn is mounted in two anti- friction bearings on the conveyor stringers. The pivoted carriage is prevented from rotating about the pivot shaft by an electric strain gauge load cell connected between the carriage and a cross support. Increasing load on the conveyor belt increases the moment of the carriage frame about the pivot shaft, and proportionally increases the tension in the load cell. The belt speed is measured by a conventional d. c. tachometer generator driven from a pulley, usually on the return belt. The speed signal from the tachometer generator and the load signal from the load cell are combined to produce a signal proportional to the flow rate of material in tons per hour, or lbs. per foot, or equivalent units, It will be important to remember, in considering various control applications, that the flow rate of material on the belt is composed of these two component signals, namely the weight of material and the speed at which it is moving. The feed rate is then indicated and recorded by a self-balancing potentiometer of the type used for measuring temperature by means of thermocouples. These instruments may also be equipped with integrating mechanisms reading the totalized tonnage over a period of time.

Certain deposits of incoherent materials which are near the surface and exploitable by open-pit mining may be characterized in real time before they are mined through an analysis of ground-surface imagery. If the slice to be stripped is not overly thick, in fact, surface texture and color properties may be extrapolated to its entire thickness. Image analysis techniques to process ground surface images acquired in situ(or in the laboratory shortly after their acquisition) which yield pattern vectors representative of RGB color component distributions and HSB texture parameters have been developed. The techniques were applied to a mineral sandy ore deposit containing three different lithotypes. Geostatistical analyses showed that the data used to characterize the lithotypes were reliable. The correct recognition of the lithotypes was carried out using a multi-barycenter classification algorithm. Such in situ image-analysis procedures open the way to the proper selection of the ore to be mined, or the proper way for run of mine (r.o.m).processing, or the appropriate blend to be processed before or at the same time as the mining process itself is enacted.

Large excavations are well known to result in rock mass deformations which can present challenging situations for mine personnel. Most of the currently available ground movement monitoring devices fail to adequately provide mine operators with highly accurate and meaningful insights into rock mass deformation or displacement. The use of distributed fiber optic sensors (DFOS) in industries such as oil and gas and civil engineering has shown the potential of these sensors to deliver real-time, highly accurate, and long-range distributed strain measurements with great success. However, the use of these sensors in underground mining is limited to a few case studies.

In 2005, CANMET-MMSL used its pool of expertise in ground control, open pit and underground mine engineering, mineral processing, information technology and applied mineralogy to launch a mine-to-mill research project. The objective of the project was to optimize the distribution of rock breakage energy among blasting, crushing and grinding activities, thereby maximizing the efficiency of energy utilization within comminution processes. Tests were designed to demonstrate that this approach could reduce the energy consumption, thus contributing to the reduction of Green House Gas (GHG) production in the Canadian mining industry. The project was accomplished in collaboration with DynoConsult and Dyno Nobel Canada Inc., a world leader in commercial explosives. Data analysis from 12 blasts (six with electronic and six with pyrotechnic detonators) in three different geological formations of a quarry (soft, medium and hard rock) shows that electronic blasting technology increases rock fragmentation by 15% (in hard rock) to 20% (in soft rock). A more uniform rock fragment size distribution is also obtained. The impact of the improved quality blast product on downstream processes of the quarry is a productivity increase of 5% in rock excavation and transportation, an energy reduction of 10% at the primary crusher and an increase of 15% of the primary crusher throughput. A soft-sensor prototype, based on primary crusher data (i.e. energy consumption, throughput, feed and product size distribution) and a simplified computerized process model, was developed for on-line measurement of the rock operating work index. Additionally, 385 rock samples and specimens were collected and prepared to determine the tensile and compressive strength of the rock material, to evaluate the aggregate crushing work index, and to examine the development of micro- and macro-fractures by means of binocular and SEM microscopy. Blast-induced rock damage was evaluated at the end of the laboratory testing program. Even though a reduction of rock hardness of around 30% was observed after blasting, the impact of the blasting method (i.e. use of electronic or pyrotechnic detonators) on the induced rock damage could not be observed. It is either absent or not perceptible with the accuracy of the measuring techniques and the number of samples analyzed.

A Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) is being planned at the site of the former Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, South Dakota, under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation (NSF) in cooperation with the Department of Energy (DOE). This national facility will host a variety of multi-disciplinary science and engineering experiments including physics experiments that require shielding from cosmogenic radiation. Current plans include construction of large rooms (up to 55 m in width) at depths of 1.48 km (4850 ft) and 2.25 km (7400 ft) below the surface. Preparation of the preliminary design required the development of a geotechnical characterization program including: preliminary drilling and coring, core logging, drill hole mapping with a televiewer, drift mapping of the geology and rock structure, in-situ stress measurements, and laboratory testing of the mechanical properties of the rocks and discontinuities. Overall rock quality is very good to excellent. Site investigations were followed by geotechnical assessments for the construction of caverns and laboratory modules. The results are favorable and reaffirm selection of the Homestake site for establishment of a Deep Underground Engineering and Science Laboratory.

Paper 1?South African experience with asbestos-related environmental mesothelioma: Is fiber type important? Neil White, Gill Nelson, Jill Murray The purpose of this review was to illustrate the importance of the type of asbestos in environmental mesothelioma. South Africa is a logical place to assess fiber type. The three major types of asbestos (crocidolite, amosite and chrysotile) were mined (all asbestos mining stopped in 2002) in South Africa. The association between asbestos and mesothelioma was discovered in South Africa. The occupational literature indicates high mesotheliomagenic potential for crocidolite, less for amosite and less still for chrysotile. Since South Africa has been a major source of crocidolite, relatively high rates of mesothelioma in the mining population is not surprising. High rates of mesothelioma due to environmental exposure is surprising, except perhaps when the authors? point out potential sources for community exposures (e.g., mine tailings used for road surfacing, golf courses, brick and plaster making; insulation in residential ceilings; children playing on fiber-rich waste rock). The authors? reviewed four studies reporting on mesothelioma cases and their sources of exposure and fiber type. Overall 23% of the known cases were attributed to the environmental (not occupational) exposure and about 90% were due to crocidolite asbestos. The proportion of environmental mesothelioma is considerably higher than in Western Australia where crocidolite is also mined. There the overall rate of environmental mesothelioma is about 6% (and less than 1% from residence in a crocidolite mining area).

The Jinping-II hydroelectric project in China features four parallel headrace tunnels approximately 18-km- (11-mile-) long. Two will be excavated by tunnel boring machines (TBM) and two by drill-and-blast. A nearby fifth tunnel is being excavated by a 7.2-m (23.6-ft) TBM to draw down ground water in advance of excavating the headrace tunnels. Unique onsite assembly of a 12.43-m (40.7-ft) main beam TBM and backup system was completed on Sept. 18, 2008 in the remote mountains of the Sichuan province. The equipment was assembled onsite, without previously having been assembled and tested in a factory, using a method called onsite first time assembly (OFTA). This paper addresses the following topics: ? Project description including geology and terrain. ? The decision process leading to onsite, first time assembly, the assembly process and logistics, and lessons learned. ? Design features of the TBM and backup system. ? INTRODUCTION Our company has made persistent efforts to utilize the very latest cost-saving technology in tunnel design and construction. However, we were relatively late in joining the clan of slurry shield tunnelers. The challenge came in 1973, when our company was low bidder on a major sewer tunnel in Hamburg, West Germany. The tunnel was to be driven under the harbor region through coarse and fine sands with up to 60 ft hydrostatic head of water. Outer diameter was 15 ft, and length was 2.9 miles. This contract appeared right to enter the new field of slurry face tunneling. We gathered a design-engineering team to develop the machine, called it "Hydroshield", and used it on the project. The good performance of the prototype machine encouraged us to improve and modify the equipment design. The very latest model is now in use on a subway tunnel in Antwerp, Belgium. This tunnel is 21 ft outer diameter and 2.4 miles in total length. In terms of excavated volume it is the world's largest slurry shield contract. While the drive is still in full swing, we are currently preparing for 3 further Hydroshield applications, with diameters ranging from 12 to 32 ft. This paper describes the Hydroshield's salient design features, operational characteristics, construction reliability and performance levels, as experienced in West Germany and Belgium.

The Yung-Chung-Tunnel in Taiwan, constructed for the Taiwan-East Railway Bureau, collapsed during construction when a water bearing, fractured marble zone was intersected. The inflow was approximately 4,000 liters/second. In spite of 30 relief holes the total inflow into the tunnel remained constant. The pre-excavation grouting through the re-aligned tunnel had to be conducted under extreme flow-conditions. A hot bitumen grouting program was selected for technical and economical reasons out of 13 international proposals. The technical challenges were: grouting under severe flow conditions high formation water pressures to be injected with hot bitumen at high temperatures and pressures The hot bitumen grouting program resulted in a dramatic reduction in the hydraulic conductivity and stabilization of the formation and facilitated a problem-free excavation.

Probability function integration method is one of the influence function method. It is a widely accepted method in many mining districts in China and Poland mainly because its theory and formulae can well-represent the surface subsidence basins due to longwall mining of flat or near-flat seams. This paper introduces the basic theory of the probability function integration method and determines its 4 basic parameters by analyzing the measured subsidence profiles in eight longwall panels in Northern Appalachian Coal field. It also discusses the two methods for determining the 4 parameters. Finally the acquired parameters are used to predict the subsidence and deformation of the houses for damage assessment. Comparisons are made between the measured and the predicted subsidence. Probability Function Integration Method The probability function integration method for predicting surface movements and deformations is widely used in China and Poland. The governing equation of the method contains five parameters: subsidence factor, a, offset of inflection point, d, tangent of the major influence angle, tan fl, horizontal movement constant, b, and major dispersion angle e (e = 90. for flat seams). Its applicable range iis much larger including seams less than 30' from the horizontal, critical and noncritical mining and soft to hard overburden.

Conventional Atmospheric Monitoring System (AMS) installations for monitoring CO, CH4, O2 and air-velocity throughout underground mines are usually relegated to a modest 3-5 mile extent and with data communication speeds confined to a ponderous 1-5K baud range. New US-MSHA and state regulations require fast reporting of unsafe conditions, and the old 20-30 minute updates are no longer acceptable. To communicate farther and faster has always been a problem, because data reliability degenerates with excessive distances and high speeds. Because of this, very large mines often resort to costly optical-fiber media, using expensive OF cables and repeaters to obtain the necessary coverage. This entails high initial cost, as well as high maintenance and downtime costs to repair or replace broken optical fibers. Rel-Tek has pioneered with its DX-Bus communication data highway, which uses inexpensive twisted-pair telemetry cables, which can now communicate well into the 20-mile extent of the largest mines -- normally a brick wall for low-tech AMS systems. This extended range, enables the use of twisted-pair cables and provides a low cost alternative to OF systems. This paper discusses the DX-Bus, and its latest accomplishment, the ?B-LINK,? a unique high-speed communication repeater that maintains the 19.2K-Baud data rate. On-going innovations to our workhorse Millennia-DX computer software have kept pace with this extra speed/distance phenomenon, resulting in a dually-optimized AMS package: both hardware and software. Cost savings are substantial, and at no sacrifice of reliability ? nearly always at 100%. Sensor updates are measured in seconds, not minutes and hours. Twisted pair copper cable is cheap to purchase and install and a breeze to maintain. Rel-Tek uses the B-LINK's wide branching capabilities to enable the AMS to extend 20-miles both far and wide. Actual experience in large US coal mines -- both longwall and continuous mining operations -- confirms the large mine performance. The ventilation and safety benefits to the mining industry are immeasurable.

Australia’s Minerals Tertiary Education Council (MTEC) has achieved several successes during its first three years of operation. This initiative was developed through the Minerals Council of Australia, in conjunction with three partner universities involved in mining engineering education. The partner universities are the University of New South Wales (UNSW); Curtin University, the West Australian School of Mines (WASM); and the University of Queensland (UQ). The collaboration between these partner universities and industry has led to the development of shared course material, cross-institutional teaching arrangements, and the development of a number of flexible, distance-based delivery programs. This article then discusses future initiatives. Importantly, the challenge is the future initiative planned to cement this collaboration by the formation of a “virtual” national school of mining engineering: Mining Education Australia (MEA). This will provide a common third and fourth year program to all three universities beginning in 2007. The common program will involve innovative teaching and learning arrangements, greater student exchange potential and a more significant input by industry into the education process.

The financial analyst's job is to make an objective appraisal of the investment opportunities which exist within the various industries under his supervision within the context of the economic model provided by his firm and the a climate of investor sentiments. Industry analysis is critical. When a major investment trend develops, usually the stock of all companies within the specific industry react in the same direction. I should emphasize here, however, that an investment trend is influenced by the economic outlook, but economics is not the only determinant - investor psychology and arbitrary political factors may be of equal or greater importance. Part of our job is to recognize trends early and determine whether they are valid. Following industry analysis, the analyst must examine the specific companies within that industry since some companies usually react more violently than others to industry trends, whether they be favorable or adverse. To simplify the process of evaluating an investment opportunity, it is convenient to isolate three types of factors which have a bearing on every sort of business although the degree of influence of each factor may vary from industry to industry. These categories are, 1) independent or external factors insofar as they are beyond the control of corporate management, 2) interdependent factors insofar as influence may be exerted by industry-wide action, and 3) dependent factors covering the area of internal decisions which are basically under the control of the individual corporate managers. Although the title of this paper, "The Corporate Use of Cash Flow," is only one segment of the third category, it may be useful to continent on the first two categories as well. The independent factors may be either economic or governmental. The economic factors include cyclicality which may be very high in the case of the basic commodity industries or relatively low as in the case of utilities. Underlying growth rates, another independent factor, may range from the business equipment industry with an annual growth rate of 14% through the electric utility industry with a growth rate of about 7% per year to the

This study was conducted to establish the effects of a diesel particulate filter (DPF) system with sintered metal substrate on the concentrations and size distributions of nano and ultrafine aerosols and concentrations of nitric oxides in underground mine air. The study focused on the formation and transformation of nucleation mode particles in mine air under prevailing test conditions. Experimental work was conducted in the NIOSH Diesel Laboratory at the Lake Lynn Laboratory experimental mine, a facility developed to allow evaluation of control technologies directly in underground conditions. The DPF system was examined for four repeatable steady-state engine modes using a naturally aspirated mechanically controlled Isuzu C240 diesel engine fueled with ultralow sulfur fuel. The engine coupled to an eddy-current dynamometer was operated in the underground drift with tightly controlled ventilation. Measurements upwind and downwind of the exhaust system discharge were used to quantify the effects of the DPF system on the mine air. A baseline was established using a standard muffler. The study showed that sintered metal DPF systems reduced the total mass of aerosols in the mine air by more than ten-fold when compared to a muffler. The nucleation mode aerosols (50dem<40 nm) in mine air were found to be strongly influenced by engine operating mode. The concentration of nucleation mode aerosols was found to be significantly higher for high-load modes than for low-load modes. The muffler and DPF system resulted in comparable total nitrogen oxides (NOx) concentrations. However, the nitrogen dioxide (NO2) fraction of the total NOx was found to be substantially higher for both systems for low-load modes than for high-load modes.

This review work reports the recovery of potassiumfromdifferent rocks and mineral sources. The global demand for potassiumis rising consistently due to the growth of agricultural production. A major portion of the world potassium production is consumed in making of fertiliser; however, other uses include those in pharmaceutical, glass, ceramic, food and detergent industries. The availability of soluble potash minerals (sylvite, kainite and carnallite) in different countries like Canada, USA, Israel and Russia makes them as major potash producers, whereas agricultural-based countries like Liberia, Somalia, Central African Republic, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia including India meet their potassium requirement through import only. On the contrary, the availability of huge potassium-bearing rocks/minerals (like nepheline syenite, feldspar, mica, glauconitic sandstone) in these countries containing around 4–17% K2O would be a prospective for commercial production of potassium. The potassium recovery from minerals/rocks is very complicated due to the uniform distribution of potassium throughout the crystal structure. Different physico-chemical separation methods like bioleaching, chemical leaching, flotation and roast leaching have been discussed for the successful recovery of potash values from these rocks/minerals. However, the recovery of potassium from hugely available seawater using the chemical precipitation, solvent extraction,membrane separation and ionic exchangemethods is not cost-effective due to the low concentration of potassium.

In 2006, the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (?2006 MINER Act?), Pub. L. No. 109-236, 120 Stat. 493 (2006) was enacted in a bi-partisan move to strengthen the 1977 Mine Safety and Health Act. This action followed several underground coal mining accidents at the Sago and Aracoma Mines in West Virginia and the Darby Mine in Kentucky. The focus of that legislation was, in part, to force technological development and implementation. It involved the recomposition and training of rescue teams. Requirements for sealing worked out areas of mines were changed when MSHA invoked its Emergency Temporary Standard (?ETS?) authority for the first time in many years. Increased penalty amounts were established for certain types of violations for all types of mining, and minimums were set for unwarrantable failure violations issued under Section 104 (d)(1) and (d)(2); 30 U.S.C. Section 814 (d)(1),(2). The entire 30 C.F.R. Part 100 penalty criteria was revamped in a rulemaking, effective in April 2007. The visions were ambitious and noteworthy and those in industry and government have spent the last four years working through the aftermath of intended and unintended consequences of these changes. The penalty structure arrived at in 2007 has proven unwieldy and has contributed to the increase in contested caseload now before the Federal Mine Safety and Health Review Commission. In essence, litigation under the Mine Act ground to a virtual halt when the number of cases increased but the budget for Administrative Law Judges, who hear the cases, and the Solicitor?s office who represents MSHA, was not increased. Addressing the backlog effectively was one of the major challenges when Joe Main was confirmed as Assistant Secretary in early 2010.

Several years ago, Hudco Industrial Products began experimenting with the idea of levitating a conveyor belt with a film of air, much like the puck on an air-hockey table. While conducting its research, the company found out that some Russian and Dutch companies attempted the concept during the 1970s. After studying those conveyors, Hudco determined that its design was better. The Hudco advanced air-supported conveyor consists of an air-tight plenum, or chamber, that runs the length of the belt. The topside of the plenum has a formed trough. It corresponds to the profile of conventional troughing rollers. Low-pressure air is provided to the sealed plenum from a low horsepower blower. This pressurized air is metered and released through the central portion of the trough and reacts against the underside of the belt. The differential pressure between the top and bottom surfaces creates the lift to support the loaded belt. Airtight covers are installed to seal the transported materials in the plenum trough.

To many who for years have scrutinized the US mineral supply picture, recent, often strident debate on present-day security of many critical mineral supplies echoes sentiments repeatedly expressed in the past decade by the minerals industry. At no time since the last world war has such a flurry of public concern been expressed for the economy&apos;s mineral sector. Where once mineral availability problems were relegated to the newspaper&apos;s business section or not reported at all, today comprehensive analyses of our international mineral posture are discussed in detail by some of the nation&apos;s most respected and widely read periodicals. In past years, disinterest was also experienced whenever the mining industry attempted to carry its message to Congress, the public, and the government&apos;s executive branch. Among minerals professionals, the past decade was a time of particular frustration clue to serious erosion ill US ability to competitively produce the vast array of raw materials vital to the economy acid national defense. Fervent calls for immediate attention were simply not answered. These professionals have understood that mining and agriculture are the primary sources of wealth, fulfilling virtually all needs and creating and sustaining jobs. Why then has it been so difficult to raise the consciousness of the American public, and even more surprisingly, of the government and national leadership? The answer to this question is perhaps endemic to how government functions, but pore important, it begs that mining professionals capitalize on the opportunity and the attention now at hand. Carefully conceived and implemented actions by both private and public sectors are needed more than ever before in the past 35 years. To this end, it is vitally important to seek out and resolve the root causes of supply problems and not dwell on superficial solutions. The following discussion attempts to establish a simple framework to view this process. It does not presume to be an exposition of cause and effect, but hopefully identifies some needed steps. Growing Awareness in the 1970s Of all events stimulating current concern, certainly the OPEC oil embargo has left the deepest impression. It was inevitable that after such a shock, man. Americans would begin asking whether the US was as vulnerable to cutoffs of minerals as it was to oil cutoffs. Then, when serious trade security questions surfaced in sonic mineral-rich nations in Africa and the Persian Gulf, the ominous term &apos;&apos;resource war" began to be heard. Countries such as South Africa, Zaire, Zambia, and Zimbabwe have suddenly become key areas for testing our national security resolve. As the US witnesses the influx of Marxist influence in many sub-Saharan exporting nations and the rising threat to free world access to critical materials and energy, the assurance of adequate supplies is becoming a national issue at last. The US is now learning that self-sufficiency for many vitally important mineral commodities has vanished. Of course, it did not vanish overnight; it had been leaking away for years, and the trend was noted by industry and a few in government. Within the minerals community, suspected weaknesses in America&apos;s resource posture were sought and found. As a result, the country&apos;s heavy reliance on foreign sources fur more than a score of minerals, many extremely vital to security, has been forcefully documented and the case for drastically altering the supply unbalance hits been proposed. The renewed concern for national defense is central to almost all proposals for minimizing US foreign mineral dependence. It is not surprising that many of the voices heard today on the dependency issue are active members or alumni of the militate establishment. Unfortunately, their almost total focus on the security aspects of dependency has tended to obscure important underlying issues which are not directly defense-related. Some of the proposals advanced might mitigate the deeps-dency problems, but they still fall short of curing the underlying problems that have led to a steady loss in mineral self-sufficiency. In almost all instances these problems call be traced to increasing government influence on the free market minerals economy. Some national security proponents seek to attain total self-sufficiency in minerals. Such arguments must he tempered by existing realities. It is easy to demonstrate that the US obtains substantial quantities of sonic essential minerals from potentially insecure sources abroad. That the US will continue to do so in the foreseeable future is not in doubt Uncertainty begins, however, when we try to interpret the significance of these facts. It is important to understand that mineral dependency does not irrevocably lead to vulnerability. Unlike oil, no mineral commodity combines the same degree of universal indispensibility and centralized foreign control of supplies. Moreover, although many US-required minerals are produced by fewer countries than export oil, those minerals cannot approach petroleum in economic or industrial importance. Finally, most foreign supplies come front friendly, secure nations such as Canada, &apos;Mexico, and Brazil. This, aid more, constitutes a vital element in US economic health as a world trading nation. The occasional use of gelatinized starch derivatives and pH adjustments to assure a slightly alkaline flotation feed slurry pH have been used in some processing plants to improve selectivity. This paper presents a preliminary laboratory comparison of several potential phosphate depressants for use with the flotation of siliceous phosphates. It was found that starch is ideal for floating fine (-35 mesh) silica from phosphate, while sodium tripolyphosphate may be the best for coarser (+35 mesh) feeds.
