Einführung in die Problematik 1.1 Die Bedeutung des Schildausbaus Seit fast 30 Jahren ist die Konkurrenzsituation auf dem Primärenergiemarkt der Bundesrepublik Deutschland durch einen von Erdöl and Erdgas geführten and insbesondere gegen die Steinkohle gerichteten Verdrängungswettbewerb gekennzeichnet, der den Steinkohlenbergbau zu tiefgreifenden RationalisierungsmaBnahmen zwang. In diesem Zusammenhang kam es Anfang der 70er Jahre zur Einrührung des Schildausbaus, der eine erhebliche Produktivitätssteigerung in den Strebbetrieben zur Folge hatte and damit die Uberlebenschance des Steinkohlenbergbaus in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland enorm verbesserte. Der Grund hierfdr lag darin, daB der Schildausbau im Vergleich zu dem vor ihm eingesetzten Rahmen- and Einzelstempelausbau eine wesentlich hdöhere Ausbauleistung erbrachte, weil er sich weit weniger empfindlich gegen Hangendausbruche and aus dem Alten Mann hereinbdschende Bruchberge erwies. So erklärt sich auch die stürmische Entwicklung and die schnelle Verbreitung des Schildausbaus. Bereits 1975 stammte rd. 50 % der Fdrderung aus Schildstreben, 1990 waren es fiber 75 % and heute sind es fiber 90 %. 1.2 Die Staubentstehung beim Schildausbau Die Erfolge des Schildausbaus sind unbestritten. Jedoch nahmen :nit seiner Einführung die Probleme der Staubentstehung and Staubbekämpfung im Vergleich zum Ein zelstempel- and Rahmenausbau erheblich zu. MaBgebend dafür sind hauptsächlich folgende Gründe: - Abbau von dozen nit gebrächen, weichen Hangendschichten, die erst durch Schildausbau abbaubar wurden, - Zerkleinerung des auf den breiten Kappen aufliegenden Bergematerials infolge der höheren Ausbaustiltzkrafte des Schildausbaus, Zermahlen der sick in die Spaltabdichtungen hineinarbeitenden Bergestückchen, - Erhöhung der Wettergeschwindigkeit infolge der durch die Baufarm des Schildausbaus bedingter. Verkleinerung des Strebquerschnitts verbunden mit der Aufwirbelung and Aussichtung von Staub, - Aufwirbelung von bereits abgelagertem Staub im Bruchraum beim Hereinbrechen der Dachschichten. Die genannten Gründe treten zumeist nicht in jedem Abbaubetrieb gleichzeitig auf. Sie rind vielmehr u.a. abhängig vom Ausbautyp, von den Gebirgsverhältnissen and von der Abbaugeschwindigkeit. Trotzdem ergeben sich beim Vorrücken des Ausbaus in der Regel hohe Staubkonzentrationen, die deswegen besonders kritisch sind, weil es sich um quarzhaltigen Feinstaub handelt, der besonders gesundheitsschädlich ist. To acquire knowledge on the general trend of primary and supplemental supports used in tailgates of US longwall mines a survey of 76 mines with 86 longwall panels was carried out in the summer of 1993. This paper attempts to provide some insight on most commonly used support types as primary and supplemental supports in tailgates. Analysis of the surveyed data show that fully grouted resin bolts and cribs are the most commonly used primary and supplemental supports in tailgates in longwall mines of USA.

This paper describes the design, construction and commissioning testing program for a laboratory facility at the School of Mining Engineering, UNSW, Australia, aimed at evaluating reinforcement tendon performance when subjected to shear loading. The project has been financially supported through the coal industry ACARP research initiative. The single failure plane design adopted in the test rig has been successful in allowing shear loading to be directly applied to fully installed (and where relevant, pre-tensioned) rock bolts. Initial results are extremely encouraging, and illustrate a significant axial component of load development as shearing takes place - particular in lower strength, softer material types. The paper also outlines future plans for use of this facility.

J. M. Huber Corporation's Quincey Mine. an underground limestone mine located near Quincy. Illinois, has operated successfully and safely for many years utilizing roof bolts on a very limited basis. Over the years, the mine had experienced several rool falls that did not result in injury to personnel. Nearly all of the roof falls were limited to the first 2 feet of the massive limestone roof. Investigation of the falls indicated the major contributing factor to these roof falls was a randomly occuring thin. horizontal clay layer in the immediate roof. Over time, separation would occur at the clay layer. causing the root to sag. and eventually causing the root to fail. J. M. Huber Corporation contracted with NSA Engineering. Inc. to assist in a study to determine the effectiveness of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR ) for locating these potential root fall areas so that mitigating action could he taken prior to roof failure. Multiple tests were conducted in areas of known roof conditions. GPR accurately predicted the existence or absence of root separation up to 1.5 meters into the immediate roof for 100 % of the known lest site conditions. As a consequence of this successful studs, J. M. Huber Corporation has used GPR to evaluate roof conditions at both its Quince and Marble Hill Mines.
