Open cast mining has been practiced in South Africa since the late1970s under near ideal geotechnical conditions. In the past decade, with the exhaustion of the traditional South African coal fields, geotechnical conditions have deteriorated. In addition, the nature of the open cast coal mining industry is changing from the conventional strip mining of virgin coal seams to the extraction of underground coal pillars by buffer blasted highwalls. These industry changes have resulted in the need to re-examine the manner in which geotechnical engineering is applied to highwall design. This paper proposes a geotechnical design rationale for open cast highwalls. Furthermore, the rationale takes cognizance of the various geotechnical hazards associated with conventional strip mining and pillar extraction by buffer blasted highwalls. The need to use geotechnical domain models and blasting geotechnics, as proactive tools for rock fall reduction, are also discussed.

Rockfalls or significant deterioration of mine openings can have significant safety and financial impacts for mining operations. The failure of drives in underground mines sometimes highlight deficiencies in the mine risk management systems in detecting geotechnical hazards and to prevent events that can have significant impact. Consequences from these failures includes fatalities, injuries, loss of revenue, additional cost, and potentially a loss in Ore Reserves. Where the impacts are severe, it also affects families and communities linked to the operation. The assessment of underground excavations requires consideration of the full range and spectrum of geotechnical hazards, design aspects, ground support, layouts and sequences. Where the assessment of these are insufficient or incorrect, it can result in drive failures. Care must be taken that meeting production targets and personnel pressures do not result in a situation where production take preference over a proper risk-based assessment of the drives to be mined. The risk management approach is now widely accepted in the mining industry for the control and management of risks in underground mines. Codes of Practices (COP’s), Ground Control Management Plans (GCMP), Principal Hazard Management Plans (PHMP’s) and technical guidance documents has become the norm for describing the mines main hazards, risk levels and intimating controls for safe passage of vehicles and mine personnel. However, where there is a disconnect between these documents and what is actually being done at the mine site, the COP’s and/or Management Plans become ineffective (or vice versa). This disconnect may occur due to the actual content of these documents, a lack of resources, or a lack of understanding about the implementation. There is therefore a need for sites to have a documented and implemented risk-based approach for assessing underground mine development. This approach or system needs to identify all hazards and other factors affecting mine development stability early on in the design process, and outline the risk classification and controls required. U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) recently initiated the Front Range Infrastructure Resources Project. This is a multidisciplinary study along the Rocky Mountain Front Range from Pueblo, Colorado, to Cheyenne, Wyoming, and is designed to collect, compile, and analyze new and existing data on natural aggregate (stone, sand, and gravel), as well as water, and energy resources. To identify aggregate resources in the Front Range, a 1:500,000-scale reconnaissance map showing locations and quality of both bedrock and surficial sources of natural aggregate in the Front Range urban corridor was prepared by processing the digital geologic maps of Colorado and Wyoming. The first step of the process was to identify map units as either bedrock or unconsolidated material. Bedrock was classified according to type (i.e., limestone, granite, gneiss, etc.), which in turn was classified based on the suitability of the bedrock for use as crushed stone. Unconsolidated materials were classified according to relative age, with the older, more weathered materials being defined as less suitable for use as aggregate than younger materials. As a spin-off from the Front Range Project, the techniques developed for analyzing the Front Range geology have been modified and expanded to include all of Colorado and New Mexico. More detailed digital aggregate maps (1:24,000 scale) are being prepared in collaboration with the Colorado Geological Survey (CGS). Maps from the CGS "Atlas of Sand, Gravel and Quarry Aggregate Resources, Colorado Front Range Counties" show the distribution of potential resources of sand and gravel and provide general information about the physical properties of the resources. These maps are being digitized and merged into a single Geographic Information System (GIS) data base. In addition, the project is adding more specific information to the maps about deposit thickness, volume, and quality. This additional information is being obtained through field-characterization studies and modeling activities. The GIs data base can be displayed and queried using off-the-shelf software such as ArcInfo?, ArcView?, and Map Professional?. In addition, the USGS is developing a decision-support system to assist users in analyzing various land-use options on resource availability.

This paper presents the development of a knowledge based integrated decision support system (E.X.I.S) for the extractive industries to provide information concerning the environmental impact of extractive operations on land quality, surface and ground waters, and the best solutions for the rehabilitation/revegetation of the waste disposal areas to the relevant target groups (extractive industries, regional authorities, national authorities, research institutes, public). GIS was integrated with the decision-making models for the rehabilitation and revegetation of mine spoil. The system design involves several steps including site selection ? mine type identification ? waste identification ? selection of rehabilitation (revegetation or other methods). The knowledge based model consists of two integral parts: the model base, in which the input data are processed and classified using special fuzzy algorithms and criteria and the knowledge model, which hosts the various decision algorithms concerning evaluation of vegetation covers, selection of trees and plant species, selection of rehabilitation and revegetation schemes and also economic analysis for each option. The system input will include parameters on site characteristics (climate, topography, geology, hydrology etc), waste type and properties (physical-geotechnical and geochemical data) as well as environmental parameters of the existing waste disposal area. Based on the values of the above parameters and the characteristics of the rehabilitation technologies developed worldwide, the system, using IF-THEN rules will define a list of appropriate techniques for the rehabilitation of the examined waste. Then, the model will involve the application of multi-criteria analysis (MCA), i.e. a structured system for ranking alternatives and making selections and decisions. Each technique shall be judged based on its behavior into four fields, i.e. financial, social, technical and environmental criteria. In turn these fields will be analyzed into a lower level of evaluation criteria.

The paper presents a study on the reclamation of two mined-out bauxite open pits in the area of Kefali, Itea, Greece. The mining area has been reclaimed partially in the past, but its proximity to the town of Itea and a national road with tourist traffic, rose the interest to examine various scenarios for improving the landscape and the aesthetics of the site and introducing alternative land-use for recreational activities. Geospatial data were modelled using a Geographical Information System (GIS) that made it possible to study alternative proposals in terms of final landscape profiles, volumes required to be moved and the associated costs.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, Wits University, research Wits Metallurgy celebrated its centenary in 2004. The department has been at the forefront of education and research and has contributed greatly to the metals and minerals industry, both in South Africa and abroad, in terms of human resources and knowledge generation. A significant number of industry and academic leaders worldwide are Wits Metallurgy graduates. Since its early beginnings, pyrometallurgy has always been part of the curricula and research offered by the department. Pyrometallurgical activities started to expand tremendously from the middle of the 1960s, especially by the formation - together with Mintek - of the Pyrometallurgy Research Group, which continues its internationally recognised research activities today. The research efforts have been concentrated on problems associated particularly with ferroalloy, steel, stainless steel production, and PGM/Cu-Ni sulphide smelting. In recent years, research has been further expanded to physical modelling of pyrometallurgical reactors. Almost all of the specific research projects were handled from a fundamental point of view, and hence a large number of MSc(Eng) and PhD degrees were achieved by candidates under the supervision of the Pyrometallurgy Research Leaders. Moreover, a significant portion of the research results were published in internationally recognized journals and conference proceedings. Among these, Infacon and the Molten Slags, Fluxes and Salts Conference series are worth mentioning. The studies from a fundamental point of view include thermodynamics, phase equilibria, transport phenomena, kinetics, and process dynamic aspects of high temperature processes and systems, both in the solid and liquid states.

Our ability to generate information and transport it about the planet on super highways of optical fibre is about to change the way in which we communicate, work and live. There is not a single aspect of our future that will go untouched by the communication and computing revolution that Is now upon us. The change we are about to witness will overshadow the impact of the printed word, industrial revolution and physical transport. The next major wave of information technology (TT) development will focus on the delivery of information and experience on demand, in the right form, at the right time, at the right price, to fixed or mobile terminals anywhere, over networks of optical fibre, radio, satellite and optical wireless. Bandwidth, distance and time will no longer be significant cost elements as service and access become dominant.

In response to recent mining disasters and new mine rescue team legislation, NIOSH researchers conducted meetings across the United States with mine emergency response experts to investigate current needs and issues. Some of the issues include emergency response preparedness, mine rescue contests, real-life training capabilities, and training facilities. Many new teams are being formed that must be trained for mine rescue team competitions as well as be ready to respond to a variety of mine emergencies including a fire or explosion, a massive roof collapse, mine inundations, or vertical shaft rescue situations. Therefore, it is important that these teams are adequately prepared and trained. This paper presents a summary of domestic and international coal mine rescue training facilities and identifies those that provide unique, real-life, and/or state-of-the-art training. Research findings from this report will be used in further NIOSH investigations to improve coal mine rescue training. There are currently more that 460 mines worldwide that utilize cyanide for gold and silver extraction. Despite this large number of cyanide-related mining operations, there have been no published accounts during the previous 25 years of the death of humans due to cyanide as a direct consequence of major mining-related environmental incidents. All published accounts of human deaths due to mining-related environmental incidents have been the result of physical inundation with tailings or waste rock materials. It appears that major mining-related environmental incidents have not been concentrated in any geographic location, are likely to occur regardless of the size of the mining company and do not occur more frequently with a specific type of mining activity. Several cyanide treatment and recovery technologies have been widely demonstrated to reliably control cyanide levels in mining solutions. With proper use of these technologies, tailings cyanide concentrations can be maintained at levels protective of wildlife while reducing the potential for adverse environmental incidents. The development of an international cyanide code of practice or management plan is recommended and should take into consideration the adoption of a weak-acid-dissociable (WAD) cyanide standard that maintains the levels entering a tailings impoundment below 50 mg/L.

Sublevel caving (SLC) is a mining method adopted in a wide range of mining depths and ground conditions with various layouts adopted to suit orebody geometry. Sublevel caving offers more flexibility and versatility compared to other cave mining methods and is a low cost alternative to open stoping. SLC also has the advantage that stopes are not required to remain stable during production, and no backfill is required. This flexibility combined with increasing pressure on mines to target deeper and lower grade mineralisation has led to increased uptake of the method. The implementation of SLC mining methods across a wide range of mining depths and rock mass conditions has led to ground control practices which vary globally from mine to mine. To date, there has been limited documentation of ground control practices in SLC mining and few benchmarks available in the literature. This paper describes the main findings from a global benchmark of sublevel cave mines conducted over three years as part of the Caving 2040 research consortium. The purpose of the project was to document and compare operational practices, technical aspects and hazard management techniques across SLC mines around the world. The review included 21 mines spread over four continents and 17 different mining companies. This paper provides an overview of geotechnical conditions, challenges and ground control practices at each of the benchmarked SLC mines. Mine design and sequencing practices adopted for ground control purposes and hazard mitigation are provided with case studies. The impact of depth and rock mass conditions on mining productivity and development rates is also described.

The sublevel caving (SLC) mining method is becoming more widely adopted as an underground mining method as mines become deeper and target lower grade mineralisation. SLC has been successfully adopted in increasingly complex and wide-ranging conditions in the past 10–20 years, demonstrating the flexibility of the method. Various challenges encountered at SLC mines around the world have led to significant differences in operating practices, mine performance and mine productivity. Unfortunately, aspects related to productivity, operational performance and best practice are not widely published and remain with individual companies. Limited information is publicly available to compare operational performance of SLC mines in the various conditions where the mining method is now being applied. To overcome this shortcoming, a global review of SLC operations was undertaken over a three-year period as part of the Cave Mining 2040 research consortium. The purpose of the review was to document technical and operational practices, hazard management strategies and key benchmarking metrics at SLC mines around the world. A total of 21 mines spread over four continents and 17 different mining companies were included in the project. The main outcome of the project was a manual of operational and technical practices, benchmarking of key metrics and documentation of the current state-of-the-art for each aspect of SLC mining. This paper describes the main findings from the benchmark in terms of mine productivity, including mine development, production and mining costs. The implications of mine scale, depth and ground conditions on operational performance at each of the benchmarked mines is described and charts are provided comparing key productivity metrics.

"In mineral processing, the recovery and/or concentration of the value components cannot occur in one operational stage, therefore requiring the use of separation circuits based on several flotation stages. The components to be separated are typically distributed at different concentrations and different particle sizes, resulting in different levels of recovery. Typically, more than one value component must be selectively removed by exploiting the differences in the components’ floatability at different pH values, pulp potential and particle size. Several methods for the design of these circuits are available in the literature, but comparatively few studies present circuit analysis tools or address the design of a multiple-product flotation circuit. In this study, global sensitivity analysis was used to analyze a flotation circuit with several products, such as copper, lead and zinc. This analysis was based on the Eureka mine concentrator plant. The analysis was performed for each of the sections of the circuit as an overall evaluation of the circuit. The Sobol’ method and the correlation method were used to evaluate the Eureka mine concentrator plant using the SimLab 2.2 software."

THE absence of a convenient glossary of terms connected with mining and metallurgy has long been felt by the general public. It is to meet this want, not to furnish a technical manual for experts, that the following glossary has been prepared. It originated in an attempt on my part to revise for publication the manuscript of a compilation prepared from the appendix of Yale's work on Mining Titles and one or two other sources, to serve as an appendix to a new work on mining law, about to be published by Mr. H. N. Copp, of Washington, D. C. This revision soon assumed, contrary to my original intention, the proportions of a reconstruction; and with the consent of Mr. Copp, and for the purpose of receiving from my fellow-members valuable aid, I presented my still incomplete work as a paper at the Lake Superior meeting of the Institute, inviting from any quarter suggestions of new terms or better definitions to be incorporated in the glossary before its final publication. This invitation was so widely and generously responded to, that I cannot undertake to make in this place individual acknowledgments to those members of the Institute, and professional colleagues outside of it, who have favored me with assistance and advice. The labor bestowed upon this paper since its presentation at the Lake Superior meeting has considerably exceeded that of its first preparation, as may be inferred from its great increase in length, as well as the numerous alterations which it has undergone. It could certainly be still further enlarged and improved; but I think a comparison of it with any of the glossaries of the same class now in print will show, at least, that it is an advance upon what has hitherto been accomplished. 1 shall be grateful, however, for further criticisms and suggestions; and I purpose at some future time to incorporate in a supplementary paper the results of such additional collections or corrections as I may obtain. When perusing articles which treat of mining geology, and when talking with miners on the field, one is at times unable to follow the exact thoughts intended to be expressed, owing to the introduction of occasional technical words, the meanings of which are not thoroughly understood either by the speaker or by the hearer, or possibly by both and laymen at times accuse their technical brethren of attempting to confuse them by employing unusual words in their conversations and writings. Technical words are necessary adjuncts to all arts and sciences. They creep into our language, frequently unnoticed by those who employ them, as being more concise and convenient than longer sentences to explain frequently recurring expressions. In many cases these words give the finest shades of meaning, such as aglomerate and congzomerate, but in others they are extremely ambiguous, for instance black sand, which in some places means ilmenite, in others, chromite, tourmaline, cassiterite, in fact, any black mineral occurring in the form of sand. Then, again, much confusion is cansed by the same rock or mineral having different names, e.g, jlu01'spa'i', which is known as cand, cann, cauk, kawk, blue-John, Derbyshire spar, &c. The multiplicity of local names is of course chiefly found among the more common minerals, which are widely distributed some people have a propensity for using words the meanings of which they understand as little as' they do how to pronounce them. We have heard such persons speak 'of vughs as "bugs," and oxides as "ox hides," and to show that there was no mistake in their intentions, we have seen these and other words written in the same way as they were pronounced. Then, again, some persons, relying more on examples than definitions, get a very vague idea as to what the true meaning of a term may be the word dimite is an example in point, which we have frequently heard applied to any dyke rock that the miner was unable to recognise as granite in fact, he uses the word in a general sense, just as the field geologist provisionally employs the word " greenstone " for certain rocks, until he has an opportunity of thoroughly investigating their character.

THIS GLOSSARY is published lay the Bureau of Mines as a contribution too the mining literature to fill a long-felt need for a compilation of the terms used by the diamond-drilling industry. The first step toward preparation of the glossary was taken in October 1955 when the Diamond Core Drill Manufacturers Association (DCDMA) proposed that the Bureau of Mines undertake the cons compilation and publication of a glossary of the terms used by the diamond-drilling industry. The work was authorized in July 1956, and a preliminary draft of the glossary was completed in may 1958. Copies of the draft were submitted for review to members of the DCDMA and appropriate personnel of the Bureau of Mines. The final draft, incorporating the many helpful suggestions of the reviewers representing both the diamond-drilling industry and the Bureau of Mines, was completed in March 1959.

This glossary is published by the Bureau of Mines as a contribution to the mining literature in the belief that it will fill a long-felt need. It contains about 20,000 terms; these include both technical and purely local terms related to metal mining, coal mining., quarrying, petroleum, and natural gas, and metallurgical works; names of useful, important, and common minerals and rocks; and geological terms. It presents in one comprehensive volume the available standard, technical terms relating to the mining and mineral industry, as well as provincialisms that have been or are now in use in English-speaking countries. The glossary also includes many terms relating to ceramics and. the clay industry, glass making, foundry practice, railway and building construction, electrical installation and power-plant equipment, and chemical terms relating to metallurgical practice. Complete lists of terms for each of these allied industries are beyond the scope of this glossary. Paleontological terms, although closely associated with geology, are far removed from mining and metallurgical operations, and for this reason have been omitted.

In many parts of the country, electric utilities use spot market coal to make up the difference between the amount of contract coal and the total amount burned. The utilities involved will normally have a structured contract for those companies supplying that spot coal. These contracts will often involve a pricing schedule with bonuses or penalties for coal above or below the specified coal quality goals. Normally, penalties will be assessed on the sulfur, ash, and other coal quality variables. This paper deals with some aspects of the pricing schedule of one of the eastern utilities that buys coal on the spot market. This utility has a number of plants that a supplier can attempt to supply through bidding procedures. The existence of the pricing schedule gives the supplier a number of different options. To the single-mine producer, options are available to send the coal to any demand site and to clean all, part, or none of the coal. In other words, he can ship to a number of different sites and can send different coal qualities to each site depending upon the level of preparation. In addition, the options to deliver blended coal to any given site will provide an additional level of complexity to the problem.

A goal programming-based worker scheduling model has been incorporated in the Mine Management Support System (MMSS) for assigning workers to prioritized jobs on a shift basis. In the model the accomplishment of each regular and non-regular job is a goal. The objective is minimization of the deviations away from the goals. A number of coefficients are used as premultipliers of the decision variables in order to address practical considerations associated with the utilization of workers and the requirements of jobs. Some of these premultipliers will be updated expertly within MMSS, timely updating the statuses of the dynamic parameters.
