We present a novel hybrid algorithm for quantifying the ore grade variability that has central importance in ore reserve estimation. The proposed algorithm has three stages: (1) fuzzy clustering, (2) similarity measure, and (3) grade estimation. The method first considers data clustering, and then uses the clustering information for quantifying the ore grades by means of a cumulative point semimadogram function. The method provides a measure of similarity and gives an indication of the regional heterogeneity. In addition, grade estimations can be obtained at different levels of similarity using a weighting function, which is the standard regional dependence function (SRDF). The algorithm presented in this study determines the combination of fans that provide all working districts of a mine with predefined airflows at the minimum operating cost. It is based on an existing ventilation simulator, VNETPC, and a set of linear equations associating fan pressures and the added resistance of regulators. Two assumptions are undertaken: (1) fan locations are predetermined and (2) the number of working districts is equal to or greater than the number of fans. By means of this algorithm, the optimal solution to an n fan ventilation system may be found after n + 1 simulation runs.

The Hardy Cross iterative method is the most popular technique for solving a ventilation network problem with natural air splitting. This method tradition-ally solves each mesh equation by an approximation during each iteration. It is thus interesting from both theoretical and computational viewpoints to be able to solve for an exact solution to the mesh equation. Presented in this paper is an algorithm for computing the exact solution to the mesh equation with a variable fan pressure. The algorithm uses signum functions for air quantities to generate an alternative mesh equation in the form of a quadratic equation, which has two solutions defined by the well-known quadratic formula. The condition that the derivatives of the alternative and the original equations must be the same provides a basis for the correct choice between the two solutions.

South Africa hosts some of the world?s largest known resources and reserves of minerals that are strategically important to the global economy. The country?s mining industry contributes significantly to the national economy in terms of gross domestic product, export earnings, corporate tax receipts, remuneration earnings, and employment. Platinum, gold, and coal are significant minerals because they make the largest individual contributions to these economic indicators. Several factors impact the cash cost performance of operations that mine these minerals, thus affecting the future sustainability of these operations, which are generally ?price-takers?. It is therefore important that the cash cost performance of operations for these key minerals is analysed. Commercially available industry cost curves can be used for such analysis. However, some companies may not be able to afford to purchase these curves. This paper presents a simple Microsoft Excel® algorithm for constructing the curves. It also demonstrates how the constructed industry curves were used to analyse the cash cost performance of South African mining operations for the three selected minerals for the period 2007 to 2011, which included the 2008 global financial crisis. The analysis revealed that the operations were affected by several global and local factors during the review period. This paper presents an algorithm for the de- termination of a production schedule for an open pit mine that satisfies all principal physical and economic constraints required by a realistic mine design. We propose to model the evolution of the mine over time as a sequential optimization problem or, equivalently, as a problem of finding a path with a largest value in a graph. Some preliminary evidence is provided that such a path can be effectively sought by an algorithm that combines a number of heuristic search rules, inspired in part by learning theories developed in Artificial Intelligence.

A process has been developed at Curtin University whereby glycine is used in an alkaline environment to leach gold, silver and copper from their ores, concentrates, process intermediates and wastes. Copper mineralisation investigated includes various oxides, sulfides and native copper. The leach process utilises an oxidising environment such as oxygen. Glycine is a non-toxic, non-volatile, edible, low cost reagent which is produced in large industrial quantities for use in several industries. Glycine and its copper and precious metals complexes are stable over wide pH, Eh and temperature ranges. Other than losses in leach residues, the glycine is recovered and recycled for leaching. Iron dissolution is insignificant in the pregnant leach solution. Iron in pyrite remains unaffected, whereas iron associated with base metal sulfides (e.g. chalcopyrite and bornite) is converted to a readily filterable iron hydroxide. Efficient separation of copper by solvent extraction and conventional electrowinning has been shown to be feasible for a number of organic extractants, whereas gold and silver glycinates adsorb very well onto carbon allowing CIP/CIL/CIC (carbon-in-column) based processes. The process is ideal for ores containing acid-consuming gangue, concentrates with high arsenic or halide contents and for copper-gold ores with significant sulfide mineralisation. The process eliminates many of the problems associated with the processing of copper-gold-silver ores, such as elemental sulfur formation, silica gels, unwanted metal co-dissolution, and jarosite precipitation. The reagents used and process residues are much safer and environmentally benign than conventional process options. The processing technology can be applied to in-situ, heap and vat, or agitated tank leaching at temperatures ranging from ambient to below 100?C at atmospheric pressure and is currently being commercialised. This paper will focus on copper leaching and recovery and iron rejection from a chalcopyrite flotation concentrate.

INTRODUCTION Union Carbide is currently operating an in-situ leach project on the Palangana Dome area in Duval county. This deposit meets all the requirements for in-situ leach in that the ore (1) is below the water table, (2) is in a permeable horizon, (3) is amenable to chemical leaching, and (4) is confined by impervious layers. This project has been under commercial production since 1976, and its capacity has been expanded on three occasions since going on-stream. Recently, additional uranium reserves were discovered on the Rogers-Cardenas (R-C) property about 32 km north of the Palangana operation. The ore is located within the Oakville sands and its characteristics are quite similar to those of the ore at Palangana. Both are an unconsolidated Arkosic sand high in clay and calcium carbonate. The R-C ore, however, is somewhat coarser with a mean particle size of 0.15 mm as compared to a mean particle size of 0.07 mm for the Palangana ore. In all respects it would appear that this ore would be a candidate for in-situ leach as a satellite operation to Palangana. Unfortunately, R-C ore is above the water table and, therefore, not amenable to the Palangana practice. Because of the limited known reserves in this deposit, it is readily apparent that conventional mining and milling are out of the question. However, because of its proximity to our Palangana operation, it seemed worthwhile to consider other options. The most viable route based on our past experience was to heap leach the ore. Our recent success at our Gas Hills facility and our Maybell operation, in employing a heap leach practice to our marginal reserves seemed to be a logical approach for processing this ore. Our experiences at both locations are described in "Heap Leaching - A Case History" by R. G. Woolery et al., Mining Engineering, March 1978. In both instances the process is an acid leach circuit and acid consumption averages 20 kg/t H2SO4. A preliminary feasibility study showed that because of the high strip ratio required for the R-C project to be successful, additional ore reserves must be located and that a method of heap leaching with an alkaline circuit would have to be developed. As a result of this paper study, the decision was made to proceed with a program of additional exploration drilling to determine the total ore reserves that could be mined economically. The Mining Department will evaluate each ore zone for cutoff grade, strip ratio, and expected mining cost. At the same time, a laboratory program to evaluate the available core samples for amenability to heap leaching with respect to an estimate of uranium recovery and processing costs was developed. This program is currently in progress, and at this time, we are just completing our process amenability study. BENCH-SCALE EVALUATION OF THE R-C ORE The initial bench-scale slurry leach tests on the R-C ore showed an acid consumption in excess of 200 kg/t H2SO4. These data, of course, discouraged us from considering this process route. Not only would the acid cost be prohibitive, but the gypsum generated by the reaction of the sulfuric acid with the calcium carbonate of the ore would severely effect the percolation of the lixivant. For this reason, the laboratory program was directed toward an alkaline circuit compatible with heap leaching. Because of the proximity of the R-C property to our Palangana operation, it seemed advisable to integrate the processing of this ore into the production at Palangana. Doing so would enable us to bring the R-C property into production by merely enlarging our present facilities at Palangana; otherwise, construction of a grass roots plant would be necessary. Ideally, the simplest method would be to construct the heaps at Palangana and employ an ammonium carbonate/bicarbonate leachant compatible with the in-situ production liquor. The product liquors could then be co-mingled or processed separately as desired. To determine if this goal was practical, samples of the R-C ore were obtained, and a laboratory program initiated. Heap leach amenability testing consisted of preliminary bench-scale evaluation to determine optimum solution strength and ultimate uranium recovery, followed by small column tests to confirm the bench-scale metallurgy and to determine percolation characteristics. These bench-scale tests are being followed by pilot-scale testing approximating field conditions. As expected, the bench-scale tests showed that the dissolution rate is considerably slower for alkaline leach than has been our experience in acid leaching. Because of the slower reaction rates, product liquor grades will be lower than for acid, as greater volumes of solution are required for satisfactory uranium extractions. The greatest influence on reaction times found in the laboratory was the carbonate/bicarbonate strength and oxidant addition. However, the higher salt concentration reduced the efficiency of the IX resin circuit and about 25g/L salt proved to an upper limit compatible with subsequent IX treatment. The oxidant contributed significantly to the early extraction rate but seemed to have only minimal effect on the total practical U308 extracted or the time required to achieve it. This variable will require larger scale testing to determine if the added cost of the oxidant is actually justifiable. Thus, the small-scale laboratory slurry tests, based on the 0.088% U308 sample available, indicate that leaching at 25g/L ammonium carbonate/bicarbonate, with or without oxidant, we might expect an 80-85% U308 extraction on this ore.

"On the north shore of the St. Lawrence River, in Quebec, are located orebodies of low-grade titaniferous magnetite. The Quebec Mining Exploration Company (SOQUEM), who have an interest in the deposits, believed that beneficiation of the could generate sufficient revenue to defray the mining costs and the costs of transporting the ore to a steel production facility. A joint research project of SOQUEM and CANMET investigated alkaline roasting of a magnetic concentrate, followed by leaching of the calcine and separation and recovery of Cr and V by solvent extraction. Aluminum was recovered by precipitation.The present paper describes the roast-leach bench-scale and pilot-plant work leading to the development of the optimum conditions f or the integrated process.A plant flowsheet was developed for the treatment of 5 x 106 tons of magnetic concentrate per annum. Estimates of capital and operating costs were made.Based on a recovery of approximately 90% V, 85% Cr and 75% AI, the total hydrometallurgical plant fixed capital costs, including mining, concentration and shipping, are estimated at $1.021 x 109; the operating costs are estimated at $131.92/ton concentrate. Annual revenue from the Na2CrO4.H2O, V2O5 and A12O3 produced is calculated to be $421 x 106.IntroductionThe Quebec Mining Exploration Company (SOQUEM) acquired in 1968 an interest in four titaniferous magnetite orebodies located in Eastern Quebec. 85 miles north of Mingan on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River. The Mingan deposit, with an estimated tonnage of one billion tons, has a reported average grade of 43% Fe, 6.3% Ti , 1.60% Cr, 0.19% V and 6.1% Al with minor amounts of nickel. SOQUEM, on the basis of previous bench-scale data, believed that the recovery of chromium, vanadium and alumina by alkaline roasting would generate sufficient revenue to defray the mining costs and the costs of transporting the ore to a steel production facility on the coast. One of the approaches selected by SOQUEM for beneficiation of the ore consisted of a combination of magnetic concentration followed by alkaline roasting of the calcine."

INTRODUCTION Shafts have been sunk in a number of ways. By and large, however, most have been sunk by drill, blast, muck, and slip form methods. Most methods have provided satisfactory means of completion. The major drawbacks to the conventional methods have been: (1) un- reliable cost estimates for completion; (2) unreliable rates of progress; and (3) unreliable integrity of the shaft lining. Recently , engineering design studies have been done that strongly indicate, that, by the use of existing proven technology, shafts can be completed faster, more cheaply, safer, and with a better lining that has been possible using conventional methods. THE METHOD The alternate method utilizes the techniques of big hole drilling, shield excavator tunnelling, and pre-cast concrete lining. Big Hole Drilling - Drilled shafts have been completed for several years and I don't intend to address the technology, only to point out the use of drilled shafts is an alternate method of shaft sinking. Ideally, in a multi-shaft mine, the first shaft would be blind bored and cased to a size, whereby it can handle the muck from the excavation of subsequent shafts. It should be an 8' to 10' completed diameter. The cost of such a shaft in sedimentary formations compares favorably with a conventional shaft. However, it is much faster. For additional shafts, the role of the drill is to complete small holes (3' to 4') to the desired horizon. This is merely a hole to allow slashing to a larger size with easier muck removal from an underground drift connected to the previously drilled shaft. The smaller holes, just as the larger one, should be cased and grouted into place so as to assure a smooth open hole. SHIELD EXCAVATOR Theory and History - Tunnelling Shields have been in common use for several decades, and steam powered shields were used in England over 100 years ago. The purpose of the shield is to provide temporary ground support, protect personnel during operation, and to house the excavating equipment. The excavating equipment approach has varied from attempts at a continuous or semi-continuous boring machine, the tunnel mole, to a mechanical or hydraulic digging arm. The shield may or may not be an active digging element. If not active, the boring tool or cutter is advanced ahead of the shield to full diameter and then the shield is moved up to the cutter, or the shield advances along with the cutter. If active, the cutter opens a conical free face, and the shield is either jacked forward so that the leading edge spalls rock to the free face or poling plates are thrust forward to spall to the free face. In either approach, various methods of muck removal are incorporated into the shield. These may be gathering arms, conveyors, or with moles, hydraulic transport, where the cuttings are sufficiently fine. The efficiency of the muck removal system is critical as excavation is rapid and the system could easily become muck-bound. Application to Shaft Sinking- Technically, the use of a shield to sink vertical shafts is no different than a tunnelling operation. It is, in fact, less complex in most respects. Muck and water removal are difficult in a blind-driven shaft. However, where an underground opening is available for handling muck and water, rapid shield sinking is possible, using a pilot hole for muck and water to fall through and be removed from below. The Tabor Mining Shield is basically a caisson approach, whereby, the ground is only seen at the face or bottom. It does have hydraulic jacks to force it downward and has segmented cutting edges which allows forepoling ahead of the shield. The hydraulic excavator allows mining in the center of the face around the previously drilled hole with the forepoling segments slabbing to this free face. First, the drilled hole is cased and grouted. The machine is a tube with an excavator. The work cycle is as follows: (1) The casing and grout are cut at predetermined intervals by shaped charges. (2) The casing is crushed by the excavator, removed from the hole and hoisted to the surface. (3) The excavator then rips out a face around the hole by digging the formation in tension and breaking the pieces

The role of the virgin in situ stress field in tunnelling projects is well known in the Sydney area. The effect of in situ stresses is mostly considered through the use of published relationships that describe the in situ stress conditions as a function of depth. Considering the significant scatter in the data, it is evident that by adopting such relationships, the designers are assuming an average distribution of stresses with depth that is generally a reasonable engineering approach; however, when building a geomechanical model, the tunnelling or geotechnical engineer needs to account for the interrelationship between ground conditions (rock mass quality – fracturing, strength and stiffness) and in situ stress, which may explain part of the stress data scatter. This paper presents an alternative approach for interpreting in situ stress conditions, valid for both Sydney sandstones and shales that focus on such interrelationship between in situ stress and ground conditions.CITATION:Oliveira, D A F and Parker, C J, 2014. "The construction industry is witnessing an upsurge in demand by property developers to have basements incorporated into their residential and commercial development schemes. This is attributable to perceived improvement to aesthetic and commercial values of buildings by underground space, amongst property owners. This trend is compelling more owners of buildings with no basements to explore the possibility of creating underground additional space beneath their existing buildings. The creation of a basement beneath an existing building entails the installation of a reinforced concrete (RC) underpinning system, temporary works, bulk excavation to basement formation level and construction of the basement structure, with associated aesthetic finishes.The L-shaped segmental RC underpins are a common system of choice for such underpinning works. They are multi-functional; providing vertical support to the existing superstructure, providing lateral support to earth and groundwater, supporting temporary and permanent surcharge loads from adjacent structures and services, whilst also forming part of the basement slab. This paper focuses on the first function of the Lshaped RC underpins; capacity under vertical compressive loading from the superstructure. The most common industry approach for the prediction of vertical capacities of L-shaped underpins is the oldfashioned Meyerhof’s (1953, 1963) effective width method, which is based on the traditional bearing capacity theory, whilst accounting for correction factors for eccentricity and foundation depth.The traditional bearing capacity formula is surrounded by a significant degree of uncertainty; estimates are highly user-dependent, as capacity prediction is sensitive to the chosen angle of shearing resistance (?), while there are difficulties in accurately measuring the in-situ ??value of cohesionless soils. In addition, the effective width approach has been shown to be very conservative by many research workers. The segmental RC underpins presented in this paper have been designed with an alternative less conservative method, which involves the use of a recently proposed consistent work-hardening plasticity model calibrated with field-based tests on footings of various aspect ratios and relative embedment in sand. The paper highlights the principles behind underpinning works for urban basement construction, the design of L-shaped RC underpins with the recently proposed plasticity model and the advantages of the method over traditional bearing capacity solutions and pre-existing plasticity models."

The use of existing mine records in conjunction with an appropriate classification scheme can be used successfully to identify and characterize the composition of existing waste rock facilities where traditional approaches based on sampling may be impractical or costly. This paper describes an alternative approach used in an acid rock drainage investigation at a porphyry copper mine with numerous waste rock dumps of varying ages and composition. The approach integrated detailed lithologic and mineralogic information about the ore body and overburden materials with records of pit development and dispatch. A waste rock characterization matrix was developed for the site to meaningfully classify lithology and mineralogic composition of the waste rock. The approach resulted in a focused geochemical testing program and facilitated interpretation and application of the test results.

Orebody modelling and reserve estimation are now subject to sophisticated procedures, but folded stratiform and stratabound deposits present particular problems in transforming coordinates of samples and blocks into their correct relative positions prior to deformation. In this paper an approach is taken whereby a geologically interpreted reference plane is used as a control. The study area is the Rio Tinto Minera copper mine near Santiago de Compostela, Spain. The transformation procedure on the 'unfolded' state is described, its limitations assessed and advantages considered.

The treatment of Turam data by conventional procedures does not permit the interpreter to make any estimate of induced current magnitudes. This problem may be overcome by using an alternative data treatment procedure. It is shown that the conventional and alternative procedures are equally satisfactory in terms of their ability to provide the location of line currents and estimates of conductor quality. A full description and evaluation of both procedures is presented in conjunction with field examples to show how the alternative procedure may assist interpretation when used to complement the conventional approach.

Automated scanning electron microscopy has been widely used in recent years for gold and other precious metals characterization. However, application of this technology is resource intensive and in most instances needs specialized technical personnel to process the samples and information. Newmont Metallurgical Services (NMS) has recently acquired an ASPEX SEM. The ASPEX SEM offers some significant benefits/improvements in sample preparation and sample processing time. NMS and ASPEX have been working together to develop an approach utilizing this technology for the minerals processing industry and specifically for gold characterization.

Copper-gold-pyrite ore types with an elevated pyrite head grade utilise a sequential flotation circuit to recover initially a copper-gold concentrate with a pyrite-gold concentrate being produced from the tailing of the initial circuit.A simpler flotation circuit with lower operating and capital costs for treatment of such copper-gold-pyrite ores with an elevated pyrite head assay was sought in the described work. After characterising the ore, the objective was to apply bulk rougher flotation of both the copper minerals and pyrite for the copper-gold-pyrite ore at natural pH. Hence, no lime or other pyrite depressants were required in bulk roughing. The bulk rougher concentrate was upgraded in a cleaner circuit to reject non-sulfide gangue and then the resulting sulfide concentrate was separated by depressing the pyrite to produce two products (copper and pyrite concentrates, both having significant gold assays). A standard test with a sequential circuit was applied to the same ore for comparison.The chalcopyrite and pyrite losses in the tailing from the rougher circuit were the same for both bulk and sequential roughing (less than six per cent). In cleaning (bulk circuit), the effective pH for pyrite depression was 11.8–11.9; copper recovery was 70–75 per cent (grade of 15–20 per cent copper) and the sulfur recovery (pyrite product) was 80–85 per cent (grade of 34–36 per cent sulfur).These results approached those for the sequential circuit where copper recovery was 80–85 per cent (grade of 15–20 per cent copper) and the sulfur recovery (pyrite product) was 83 per cent (grade of 38 per cent sulfur).The observed effects of feed sizing on the liberation of minerals in the rougher feed are discussed. Options for improving the bulk circuit results are also considered. "Underground mine rib stability is an ongoing safety issue in all mining applications. Rib-related accidents present at least as many problems as roof-related ground control. Underground coal mine rib safety is continually emphasized as a primary safety concern at every mining operation. The application of rib support materials is increasing as more difficult mining conditions are experienced due to deeper cover, more variable depositional environments, thicker seam heights, and multi-seam mining effects. As the coal seams become thicker, the need for rib control increases. A variety of rib control methodologies has been documented and research continues on mine design methods and support techniques to reduce or eliminate rib-related accidents.This paper presents an alternative rib bolting technology using proven conventional rib support systems that allows mine personnel to more efficiently install rib support during development operations. This alternative rib bolting method allows for additional rib support with a single support installation.INTRODUCTIONRib control continues to garner the watchful eye of both concerned operators and government officials due to many factors: inherent safety within entries and crosscuts, actual rib stability history, safety improvement, cost control, improved mining methods, and maintaining production goals. As demonstrated through many years of actual practice, desired outcomes can be achieved by scrutiny, innovation, and combining improved practice methodologies.Rib surface control continues to be a necessary part of the production process. However, production and safety issues persist at the point of installation using current control apparatuses and methods to install rib controls. Among others, current issues of rib control are quantity of bolts required, overall time required for installation, ease of apparatus installation, flexibility of the system for appendage installation and operator exposure. A need exists to decrease the time miners spend installing rib control apparatuses, while increasing the safety of such installation processes. At present, installing rib control devices (primary rib bolts, plates, mesh, and, in most cases, secondary rib bolts and plates) is performed in a very congested area and is time-consuming process at the primary coal-winning area: the face. The current genesis of pisolites and channel iron deposits (CID) has been defined in a way that presents CID as unique in the world. The published material on detrital pisolites mostly details the West Australian CID; most other global occurrences of iron-rich pisolites would seem to have an in situ genesis. An alternate theory for the origin of the Hamersley CID is suggested, involving an older greensand protore derived from volcanic ash and deposited on a glaciated Hamersley surface. This paper presents the author's observations, sampling and mapping after several years study and exploration for pisolites and CID in WA and in some locations overseas. It is not what one would call scientifically complete, and possibly asks more questions than it answers, but it is presented as a point for discussion.

The use of gravity concentration as a means of recovering the 'free' gold component from alluvial and milled ore products is widely used and is receiving increasing attention, particularly with the introduction of the centrifugal-type concentrating units. Because of ever-increasing mining and processing costs and a decline in the gold price, it has become important that the recov­ery efficiency from concentrates is improved so as to increase the yield of bankable gold from this primary recovery step. This paper outlines an alternative hydrometallurgical approach aimed at achieving overall gold recoveries in excess of 98%, together with the elimination of any secondary residue streams which, in the case of conventional treatment methods, require re-processing. An adaptation to the Minataur™ Process technology is being applied with the proposed method, incorpo­rating the pre-treatment of the concentrate, oxidative leaching of the pre-treatment residue, followed by precipitation of a high­purity gold. This route is seen to have application in all scales of operation. Selected results from laboratory-scale testwork are presented to highlight the discussion.
