Since 1993 Cyprus Amax has brought $2.5 billion dollars of greenfield and expansion projects into production, taking it from a mid-sized domestic minerals company into a major international minerals organization. The near simultaneous development of these multiple mineral projects in different locations around the world provided the opportunity for Cyprus Amax to develop a formal project management approach based, in large part, on an outsourcing philosophy. This formal project management system along with its outsourcing philosophy has served the growth agenda of Cyprus Amax extremely well. These preceding factors, coupled with the in-house retention of a core project group that fully understands the breadth of skills and abilities needed to undertake development of multiple large projects successfully, have been the cornerstone of Cyprus Amax’s project development success.

Automation is a word whose meaning has been broadened by popular usage to include any labor saving device. We with restrict our usage to the replacement of human judgement by instrumental measurement and mathematical analysis in the control of industrial processes. Mineral concentration is an area which has resisted automation because of the great difficulty in developing measuring instruments which can exist in the rugged environment and can measure useful properties with acceptable accuracy. This is not the only factor limiting progress, but until recently it has been of over-whelming importance. The development of on-stream X-ray analysers, magnetic flowmeters and nuclear density meters for mineral slurries has eliminated this obvious barrier and is enabling us to locate and attack the less obvious problems which still limit our ability to automate concentrators. If we examine the history of automation in industries which are highly automated we find that it has usually gone through three distinct phases. The first phase has been regulation. This is the simplest form of control and involves manipulating some variable whose value is of no importance in order to maintain the value of some other variable which is important at a constant specified value in spite of disturbances which may occur in other variables which affect it. A simple example is the use of a control valve to maintain a constant flow of fluid in a line in spite of changes in pressure in the vessels at the ends of the line. Over the past decade, discrete element method (DEM) simulations have seen increasing adoption by the resources sector to inform the design of materials handling equipment such as transfer chutes, bins and hoppers. But, if ‘all models are wrong, but some are useful’ (Box, 1979) what approaches are available to check that a DEM simulation is useful? How to avoid garbage in equals garbage out. This work considers what properties of bulk solid flow behaviour are important to transfer chute simulation. Cohesive bulk solids (such as sticky iron ore fines) can develop sufficient strength to form a stable cohesive arch, this phenomenon is not well predicted by measurements of angle of repose. This work presents a two-part approach to the development of a useful DEM model that can be used to add value to the design and optimisation of bulk materials handling equipment. Part 1 is the calibration of not just one, but a range of material models chosen to envelope the range of anticipated materials that will be handled. This work describes the DEM simulation of a batch of direct shear cell tests to develop material models that can be measured by the same metrics routinely used to characterise the flowability of cohesive iron ore fines. Part 2 of this work describes systematic methods for validation of the transfer chute DEM simulations. The DEM model is only useful if it can adequately represent the typical problems observed within a transfer chute, such as blockages due to build-up and cohesive arching. Proper validation requires good observations. Validation examples of site observations are shown side-byside with simulations to demonstrate the adequacy of the DEM model and calibration approach. DEM simulations have the potential to add significant value by allowing engineers and designers to predict material flow-through equipment based on a range of material properties, allowing for stress testing designs and making iterative improvements.

Weak rock is an important consideration in tunnel design and construction due to the difficult ground conditions that are often encountered. Nevertheless, when conditions are favorable high advance rates can be achieved leading to economical tunnel construction. Successful construction of a tunnel in weak rocks depends on correctly anticipating the behavior of these unique materials. The objective of this paper is to provide guidelines that can be used to accurately classify the performance of weak rock in tunnels.

The possible use of combined (flotation/magnetic separation and magnetic separation/flotation) technologies involving the new flotation reagent systems for upgrading the iron ore concentrates, low grade manganese products and beneficiation of graphite-bearing dusts from integrated iron-and-steel works has been shown. It has been found that the absence of magnetic flocculation phenomenon worsens the reverse cationic flotation of oxidised iron ore concentrates and direct flotation of low-grade manganese products which require the use of modifiers possessing the flocculating properties. The object of most blasting operations is to destroy the insitu structure of the rock mass so that mechanical equipment can efficiently excavate the rock fragments. In achieving this objective the blasting engineer is also concerned with minimising damage to the adjacent rock which forms the mine structure relied upon to provide support. Damage to this "structural" rock is undesirable but usually occurs as a result of two distinct processes: ò readjustment of stresses around the excavation as a result of the mining process itself ò impact of vibration and high pressure gases from blasting operations. Gross damage to mine structures from either cause is observed as visible alteration to the appearance of the rock structure in the form of cracking, slabbing, back or over break and visible displacement. Recent work at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) has shown that significant reduction in the strength of a rock mass can take place well before the onset of these obvious signs of damage. It has been demonstrated that the effect of blast damage on the behaviour of the rock mass can be many times more prominent than the effect of stress redistribution. This offers the blast design engineer the opportunity to significantly reduce blast induced damage to rock structure by modifying blasting practices. This paper introduces the current JKMRC postgraduate research projects investigating the evaluation and control of blast damage.

This paper describes some experiences in the design of flotation reagent schemes for the efficient flotation of complex gold ores containing free gold and/or gold associated with easily flotable sulphide minerals such as chalcopyrite and bornite. Historically, the design of gold flotation reagent schemes has been based primarily on experiences using high dosage levels of water soluble charged collectors such as xanthates and dithiophosphates and carefully controlled regions of pH. This approach has been effective with gold associated with complex sulphide minerals, in particular gold associated with iron sulphides such as pyrite. An alternative two-stage reagent approach is presented that is applicable to certain types of gold ores. This approach involves using very small dosages of uncharged water insoluble collectors at natural ore pH followed by a modified bulk flotation reagent approach for the second stage. The reasons for utilising this approach, when applicable, are discussed and illustrated with examples.

To assist in their develop- ment Amdel has investigated the beneficiation of many samples from these deposits and has estab- lished flowsheets for the recovery of nickel values by flotation. Metallurgical data are presented for the samples according to four factors which were encountered in their respective treatments.

The Mining design system is a CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) software and was developed as designer-oriented, interactive mode software to perform geological and mining design calculation and graphics. To perform geology and mining design, the deposit model files created by the software "Deposit Modelling System", are transferred to the environment of graphics support software, then a specially developed drafting submodule can be selected to proceed to interactive graphics design. If it is necessary to calculate the grade and quantity of a particular part of the ore-body, another submodule will be called and run. The resulting file is 'transferred back, and the recalculation program takes the data from the file and refers to the deposit model file to create a summary reserve report: The minimum hardware configuration of the system are IBM-AT Basic work station with high resolution graphic monitor and peripherals needed are digitizer, plotter, printer.

The phenomenon of spontaneous combustion is one of the major hazards encountered in underground coal mines both from the safety aspects and on economic grounds. Every occurrence, however small, if not tackled effectively in the early stages can develop into open fire, or explosion of gas or coal dust. In terms of economy, even dealing with small incidents may be costly in terms of labour and materials, and in case of a sealing off of a district being necessitated, the loss of face equipment and sterilization of reserves is potentially great. Therefore, expense and effort in prevention and detection of such heating, together with a high state of readiness for dealing with likely event, is completely justified and may be considered as a sound investment. In order to achieve this investment, it may be worth to pinpoint the centre of the fire occurring due to autogenously heating which is supposed to be great assistance to inert it at a least cost and time. Therefore, it is the aim of this work to model the spontaneous combustion in the goaf.

CENTRIFUGAL force has been utilized for the dewatering of fine coal for over 50 years by means of machines commonly called centrifugal dryers. In any centrifuge the coal and water are subjected to a spinning action which usually increases in intensity as the coal progresses through the machine. This spinning action, or the centrifugal force that it induces, tears water away from coal particles and produces a dewatered coal. The effectiveness of the dewatering action for any particular machine is governed by the size-consist of the coal and the centrifugal force imparted to the water on the coal.

The use of piled raft foundations has been considered as an economical alternative to conventional piled foundations because a portion of the applied load is carried by the raft in the design of piled raft foundation. In analyzing the behavior of a piled raft foundation as a settlement reducer, an accurate estimate of settlements of the system should be made on the basis of the understanding of nonlinear behavior of piles in layered soils as well as the interaction between the raft, soils, and piles. Although the 3-dimensional finite element method and simplified analysis methods have been used for the design of piled raft foundations, these methods were found to be inadequate for the practical purpose or could not consider the interactions properly. This study developed an approximate hybrid method of analysis to be used for the practical design of piled raft foundations considering pile-soil, raft-soil, pile-soil-pile and raft-soil-pile interactions. In the presented method of analysis, the settlements of the system are estimated satisfying the compatibility of two separate models which are the flexible raft model consisting of 2-dimensional finite elements supported by springs representing soils and piles, and the group-pile model embedded in layers of soil having different properties. Comparisons with other analytical methods as well as a 3-dimensional FEM program were made to verify the sufficient capabilities of the proposed hybrid model for application to practical design and analysis of piled raft foundations.

"Due to the increasingly stringent cleanliness requirements for final steel products, there has been a growing interest in the possible use of micro-bubbles for the removal of inclusions with diameters smaller than ~50µm, present within the steel passing through a steelmaking tundish. However, several technological barriers have prevented the adoption of this technique in industry. These are related to a) the generation of micro-bubbles in liquid steel, b) the measurement of bubble size distributions, and c) the optimization of bubble injection conditions to create micro-bubbles. In the present study, a novel Aqueous Particle Sensor (APS) system was developed for the in-situ, on-line, detection of micro-bubbles in water, generated by a newly designed full-scale ladle shroud, located at McGill Metal Processing Centre (MMPC). Measurement results from the sensor were validated against bubble size data collected through a high speed camera and post-processed through the commercial software, Image J.Control variables and orthogonal experiments were designed to assess the dependence of average micro-bubble sizes and bubble size distributions on key experimental parameters. Those chosen were the air inlet flowrate, the distance of the gas injection port from the slide gate, and the number of injection ports used. The investigation demonstrated that the APS system can be successfully adapted to detect micro-bubbles up to ~800 micron diameters. Using this novel sensor, it was shown that multi-port injection using low air inlet flowrates, closer to the slide gate, were useful in forming small micro-bubbles within the flow through the ladle shroud. The results from the APS system were compared and validated against data resulting from an optical technique. INTRODUCTIONModern industry expects increasingly stringent cleanliness requirements for final cast products. Therefore, the numbers and sizes of inclusions need to be strictly controlled in steelmaking operations. Thus, the cleanliness of steel products depends on the amount, morphology and size distributions of nonmetallic inclusions in steel (Zhang L. & Thomas B., 2003). Since large, deep, tundishes provide longer nominal residence times for liquid steel passing through it to the exit SEN’s, this can provide the ideal place to separate inclusions, and bubbles can assist by removing help attach inclusions and float them to the top surface."

Massive sulphide mineralisation at the Miriam prospect, near Coolgardie, Western Australia, is fracture-controlled and associated with disseminated sulphides near the basal contact of an ultramafic lens. The lens is peridotitic in composition with a pyroxenitic zone at its base, and lies within a sequence of altered high-Mg basalts and pillowed tholeiitic basalts. Recrystallisation of the ultramafic rock has resulted in the development of secondary olivine. The average composition of the sulphide fraction of massive ore is Cu = 4.4%, Co = 0.3%, Ni = 23.0%, Fe = 31.8%, S = 40.6%, consisting of the supergene assemblage violarite-pyrite to a depth of 210 m.

"The objective of this paper is to present the development of a software tool that will assist in an area calculation of the Analysis of Roof Bolting Systems (ARBS) support intensity while incorporating more detailed geology, stress, and intersection span input. In this area ARBS tool, a detailed CMRR distribution can be determined from the available geologic database at the mine. In addition, the overburden and multiple-seam stresses, as obtained from the boundary-element program LaModel, can be converted to a “pseudo-depth” which is then used as the depth input to the area ARBS calculation. Finally, the section-specific intersection spans can be determined from the mine design for input to the calculation. All this detailed area input information for ARBS is handled by the latest version of the Stability Mapping (StabMap) program, which now outputs an area ARBS suggested support density given the required input parameters. This final ARBS grid can be plotted, analyzed and overlaid on the mine map for optimum use in support design and for presentation to production personnel.INTRODUCTIONSince the inception of roof bolts in the 1940s, there has been a lack of a universally accepted roof bolting design method (Mark, 2002; Mark and Pappas, 2012). To address this situation, the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Hazard (NIOSH) developed roof support design guidelines, which were incorporated into a computer program called the Analysis of Roof Bolting Systems (ARBS). These guidelines were based on the effects of roof quality, stress, and mine geometry (Mark, Molinda and Dolinar, 2001). The roof rock quality in ARBS is represented by the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR), the depth is used as a surrogate for the stress, and the intersection span serves to represent the mine geometry (Mark, Molinda and Dolinar, 2001). These three input parameters are used in the fundamental, empirically derived equation of ARBS to calculate a required support density factor, called ARBS, (Mark, Molinda and Dolinar, 2001):"

The United Nations Law of the Sea (LOS) Convention includes provisions (Article 76) for establishing the outer limits of a coastal State's continental shelf and for denoting the seaward extent of sovereign rights over natural resources. Determination of a coastal State's continental margin, according to Article 76, must consider eight factors: 1. The territorial sea baseline 2. The 2,500-meter isobath 3. The foot of the continental slope 4. A line 200 nautical miles seaward of the territorial sea baseline 5. A line seaward of the foot of the continental slope connecting the points where sediment thickness divided by distance to the foot of the slope equals .01 6. A line 60 nautical miles seaward of the foot of the continental slope 7. A line 100 nautical miles seaward of the 2,500-meter isobath 8. A line 350 nautical miles seaward of the territorial sea baseline Figure 1 shows the preliminary limits for each of the Article 76-based definitions for a portion of the U.S. Atlantic continental shelf. The additional areas gained beyond the 200- nautical mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) are highlighted. The first three factors are baselines from which the distance provisions of Article 76 are measured. Factors 4-8 are distance- from-baseline provisions for establishing the continental shelf limits. Factor 5, also known as the Depth of Sediment Limit or "Irish Formula", was calculated using sediment thickness data from seismic linesand isopach maps. All other factors were determined from digital hydrographic data. The Depth of Sediment Limit is the most advantageous method for the area shown in Figure 1. It is especially useful for introverted coastlines such as the Georgia Embayment and New York Bight areas. GEOPHYSICS differs from geology and physics in many respects. In the first place, geophysics is a complex science embracing the fields of seismology, geomagnetism, geoelectricity, geodesy, meteorology, volcanology, physical oceanography, physical hydrology, tectonophysics and exploration geophysics. Geology is also a complex science and so extensive in its various fields that no one can master them all, and no part of geology deals in any sense with several of these fields of geophysics. In the second place, geophysics makes use of methods and instruments that are derived primarily from the science of physics. Geology, on the other hand, has methods of its own and it draws its borrowed techniques and its instrumental equipment not only from physics but also and perhaps primarily from chemistry and biology. The difference, therefore, between the geophysicist and the geologist lies partly in the phenomena that are observed, partly in the methods and instruments with which each carries on his exploration; but partly also, and perhaps principally, in the habitual attitude of mind and in the background of specialized training with which each approaches the problems presented by this planet of ours. The geologist as such, therefore, is no geophysicist. On the other hand, the physicist is not a geophysicist either. Isolation of each problem in a closed laboratory system under complete control is fundamental to the methods of the physicist. The geophysicist must apply physical instruments and physicomathematical reasoning to the study of physical quantities in their undisturbed natural environment. What, then, is a geophysicist? In the sense that he is a trained expert in all of the geophysical sciences, I do not believe that such a person ever existed. It would be beyond the possibilities of a single lifetime. I think there is confusion in our ideas and in our use of terms. We are not all thinking of the same thing when we say geophysics or geophysicist; yet we seem to talk as though we were. It is as absurd to say that the whole of geophysics belongs to geology because the field of a particular type of geophysicist-the exploration geophysicist -calls for some knowledge of geology as it would be to say that the whole of biology belongs to geology because a particular type of biologist-the paleontologistneeds some knowledge of geology. DEVELOPMENT OF A GEOPHYSICIST Since it is impossible to become an expert in all the fields of geophysics, and since students entering college seldom know the field they will choose as a career, what would we suggest as the best general preparation for work in geophysics, whether as a meteorologist, an oceanographer, a seismologist, a geodesist, a geomagneticist, a volcanologist, a tectonophysicist, a hydrologist, or an exploration geophysicist? Wollongong* is Australia's largest single centre of mining and metallurgy. Wollongong's total employment in manufacturing of basic metal products (over 26,500 in 1972/1973) was almost 50 per cent higher than that of Newcastle and double that of any other Australian city. Although the great bulk of this employment was in steelmaking, Wollongong's copper industry was also a significant employer. Wollongong's total employment in mining (4,900 in 1971) was second only to that of Newcastle among Australian mining centres. Although the bulk of Wollongong's mining is of coal, there is also considerable mining of blue metal, sand and clay.
