Although significant phosphate mining activity has occurred in four western states-Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming-southeastern Idaho contains the largest, most easily mineable reserves, and mining has focused there. More than half of the western phosphate field's economic reserves are within a 32 x 96-km (20 x 60-mile) rectangle bounded by Montpelier, Idaho, on the south, Soda Springs on the west, and Grays Lake on the east. A large amount of this land lies within the boundaries of the Caribou National Forest.

"Curtin University’s Gold Technology Group has developed an online CIP/CIL simulation model called SIMCIL which has been used since 1999 to model and simulate industrial leach-adsorption circuits. Recently the model has been upgraded to include an integrated liberation-leach modelling (ILLM) approach which can be used to evaluate the impact of various process parameters (such as grind size, bleed to gravity etc.) and circuit configurations on leach-adsorption circuit behaviour and overall plant gold recovery. A new time-efficient ore characterisation methodology has been researched and developed to provide the required liberation-leach data used in the ILLM approach, which is implemented online for the modelling of gold operations. "Gold ores often show significant inter-domain variation with respect to the gravity recoverable gold (GRG) content and the leach behaviour of the non-GRG component. Liberation assessment is extremely difficult for gold due to its malleability and the high sampling errors and poor test reproducibility resulting from gold’s high specific gravity and the low metal concentrations that occur in most gold ores. The use of microscopic techniques for the liberation assessment of gold is also impractical due to the high number of sampling errors and high cost of analysis.Curtin University’s Gold Technology Group has developed an online carbon-in-pulp/carbon-in-leach (CIP/CIL) simulation model called SIMCIL, which has been used since 1999 to model and simulate industrial leach-adsorption circuits. This paper will focus on two topics, namely (1) an innovative process for the neutralization and partial sulphate removal of acid streams produced during coal mining and processing and (2)optimization of this integrated neutralization process by adding small amounts of synthetic organic polymers. The integrated lime and limestone process has been developed to neutralize acid mine water and to remove sulphate (to less than1 200 mg/l), magnesium and metals. Limestone and lime treatment is the most cost-effective technology for neutralization and partial sulphate removal of acidic/sulphate-rich water to sulphate levels of less than 1 500 mg/l due to precipitation of magnesium and removal of the associated sulphate fraction (through gypsum crystallization). Neutralized mine water of this quality may be suitable for irrigation. The process consists of the following stages: 1. Limestone (CaCO3) neutralization to raise the pH to 7 and CO2-production. 2. Lime (Ca(OH)2) treatment to pH 12 for Mg(OH)2precipi-tation and gypsum (CaSO4.2H2O) crystallization. 3. pH adjustment with CO2recovered from stage 1 and CaCO3 precipitation. Retention times of 1 hour, 4 hours and 1/2an hour were required by stages 1, 2, and 3 respectively. The sulphate level was reduced to 1 094 mg/l, which is less than the original aim of 1 200mg/l. Chemical costs associated with neutralization, using limestone instead of lime, are reduced by 69% in the integrated limestone/lime process. The overflow water from the clarifier of each of the above stages generally contains a wide variety of colloidal impurities that may cause the water to appear turbid or may impart colour. This results in very slow sludge settling rates that cause overflow water with a high degree of turbidity and colour. There are a number of successive or simultaneous stages involved in the agglomeration of particles. To get optimum neutralisation of the acid water and partial sulphate removal to below the saturation level of gypsum (i.e. 1 500mg/l), maximum sludge recovery is needed. The higher the concentration of seed crystals, the larger the surface area. Therefore, effective removal of suspended and colloidal matter from the overflow of each stage is required and can be achieved by coagulation and flocculation. The polymers PAC6 and 3095 were effectively used as coagulant and flocculant respectively. The addition of these polymers resulted in a clear overflow in each of the above stages with a very low turbidity.

Ground falls in U.S. underground coal mines can lead to significant consequences, including loss of life, injuries, damaged equipment, and production stoppage. Improving the safety of the workplace is of utmost importance for mine workers and the U.S. economy. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accident/injury/illness dataset provides short narratives for reported incidents, including ground-falls. The main objective of this study is to develop a framework that includes: 1) utilizing machine learning algorithms to categorize ground-fall incidents from narratives based on the main cause of the occurrence and 2) demonstrating an example of a user-friendly visualization to display injury/fatality trends from narratives in U.S. coal mines between 1983 and 2021. The developed framework was tested on a subset of the data and achieved an average F1-score of 96% in categorizing the incidents. The outcome will help identify areas requiring additional research and innovative solutions to reduce severe occupational hazards.

The Western Cape Mineral Processing Facility (WCMPF) is a collaborative educational initiative between the Department of Process Engineering at the University of Stellenbosch and the Chemical Engineering Departments at the University of Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. The primary objective of the WCMPF is to facilitate the education, development and graduation of suitably qualified engineering graduates and diplomats for the mining and mineral processing industries. In recent years the WCMPF has embarked on a number of initiatives aimed at improving the quality of mineral processing education which include, more importantly the introduction of novel ?end to end? or ?integrated? practicals. The practicals are developed around a specific mineral theme or route, which more than often includes the development of several new pilot plant practicals demonstrating key unit operations or processes in the selected mineral theme or route. The most recent mineral processing pilot plant practical programme is developed around the beneficiation of heavy mineral sands. The programme consist of the following developed pilotplant practicals: the online electrostatic separation of free flowing mineral sands using a Roche Mining Carrara high tension roll separator incorporating a Blue Cube Systems MQi in-line mineral quantifier; the production of titania-rich slag and pig iron from the smelting of ilmenite and anthracite in a 60 kW direct current (DC) plasma arc furnace as well as the mineralogical characterization of the feed and products; the continuous closed-circuit ball milling and screen classification of titania-rich slag. This paper illustrates the important role of a well-designed heavy mineral sands beneficiation pilot plant practical programme in facilitating the education and development of suitably qualified personnel for the mining and mineral process industries.

"For several years, the existence of a deposit of barite (BaS04) near Brookfield, Nova Scotia, has been known. A very large deposit of strontium (SrS04) near Sydney, Cape Breton, is a more recent discovery. Cape Chemical Syndicate has been formed to work the deposits. A five-million-dollar integrated mineral processing and chemical plant is planned for Sydney to produce various compounds of barium and strontium. The mineral processing plant includes the Jones Wet Magnetic Separator and will produce high-purity barite and celestite. These products will be processed further in the fine grinding plant and the chemical plant. The general project is described, covering the deposits, processing and markets."

An account is given of the development of a process to concentrate gold and other valuable minerals and to produce a discardable waste. In this process, the ore is coarsely milled, a bulk flotation concentrate is prepared, and the flotation tailing is scavenged in a hydrocyclone, which returns coarse gangue, moderately coarse valuable minerals, and locked valuable minerals back to the mill. The engineering developments required by this circuit in order that it will fit underground, and the progress made towards the achievement of those requirements, are reviewed. If the waste is to be suitable for use as a backfill in a deep-level, flat tabular excavation, it should be capable of being placed hydraulically, and should have both low voidage and high rates of drainage. Such a material could be prepared by the fine screening of the overflow from the cyclone in the proposed circuit. Possible methods for the handling of the concentrate and the recovery of its valuable constituents are described. The paper concludes with a discussion of the possible benefits from the use, in deep-level Witwatersrand mines, of a system involving concentration underground, extensive backfilling using the tailings from the concentration process, and hydraulic hoisting of the concentrate.

"An integrated model is developed to represent the three-dimensional electromagnetic wave propagation and thermal phenomena during microwave heating of ceramics and dielectric/biological materials. The model development is based on the edge finite element formulation for electromagnetic fields and the node fmite element formulation for thermal phenomena. Results are presented and compared well with available analytical solutions and experimental measurements. With the model, the effect of sample positions on the electromagnetic and thermal field distributions is studied.IntroductionMicrowave, as an electro-heating source, has been widely used in the processing industries for packaged foods and other materials. The commonly used household microwave oven is a typical example of microwave heating processes. "An integrated mathematical model is developed to represent the thermomechanical behavior of the materials and microstructure evolution during metal forging. The model development is based on the finite element solution of the thermoviscoplastic deformation of metals coupled with the internal state variable model describing the microstructure evolution involving work hardening, recovery, recrystallization and grain size distribution. The procedures for the integration of the microstructure model into the macro finite element model are described. Computed results for both macro and micro phenomena during metal forging, such thermomechanical deformation such as velocity field and effective strain rate and materials characteristics such as distribution of grain size and recrystallization volume fraction, are presented.1. IntroductionThermomechanical behavior and material microstructural evolution are two critical, interrelated aspects associated with metal workpiece undergoing large plastic deformations such as encountered in forging processes. In much of the modeling work up to date, these two aspects have been addressed separately. Die designs and forging processes are investigated using finite element based thermomechanical models while material dynamics during forging is studied, more often than not, as a separate subject. "Fluctuation in market price of mineral products has enforced mining companies to cut down their operating costs. One useful way of reducing operating costs in mining operations is to make optimal operational decisions, incorporating efficient mining fleet management systems (FMS). Over the last 50 years, several types of FMS have been developed and introduced in the mining systems around the world. However, there are two major shortcomings in existing systems. Firstly, none of the existing systems consider effects of the short-term plan on dynamic truck assignment. Secondly, most of the existing FMSs make decisions in a way that optimize a specific objective while ignoring others. Herein, we propose a multi stage and multi objective FMS that deals with aforementioned shortcomings of the currently available systems. The developed FMS, in its upper stage, links semi-dynamic operational decision making process to the short-term production plan by simultaneously assigning shovels to mining faces and allocating trucks to the shovels by implementing its first multi objective decision making model. Then in its second stage, in a real time dynamic decision making process, it assigns trucks to shovels and corresponding destinations by optimizing its second multi objective decision making model. The developed fleet management system has been verified using an Iron ore case study and the results are presented in this paper. INTRODUCTION Open pit mining method is the most common method to mine mineral from the earth. Based on Wetherelt and van der Wielen (2011) there exist 2500 open pit metal mines that are categorized as industrial scale mines. Over all of those, the amount of material handled using truck and shovel material handling system is more than the amount handled by all other systems together (Humphrey & Wagner, 2011).It has been proven by several studies that more than 50 percent of operating cost in a truck and shovel based open pit mining operation is accounted for material handling (Moradi Afrapoli & Askari-Nasab, 2017, Alarie & Gamache, 2002, Ahangaran et al., 2012). Thus, introducing even 1 to 2 percent cut in its material handling cost saves huge amount of money for the stakeholders. Over the last 50 years, two major areas have been identified to cut this cost. On one hand mining industries have been implementing equipment with higher production capacities, and on the other hand, researchers have been developing operations research techniques to make dynamic decisions as close to optimal as possible to deduct operational costs in truck and shovel based mining operations."

This paper addresses the question ?What constitutes the right level of investment in community goodwill?? Mining companies are still grappling with this subject even though the business case for community investment has been accepted at a general level, as a strategy for competitive differentiation, risk mitigation and a desire to deliver - and to be seen to deliver - a ?net benefit? to affected communities. Gaining senior management commitment to long term social projects, by definition characterized by uncertainty and complexity, is made easier if projects are shown to benefit the site?s strategic goals. Case study research amongst mining companies, including interviews with social investment decision-makers, has assisted in developing a SI-DAT (Social Investment Decision Analysis Tool), a decision model for evaluating social projects in order to create value for both the company and community. Multi-criteria decision analysis techniques integrating business planning processes with social impact assessment have proved useful in assisting mining companies think beyond seeking access to required lands and peaceful relations, to how they can meet their business goals and contribute to regional development.

The potential of the developed multi-dimensional analysis system to assist interpretation from large data sets through derived digital mapping models is presented accompanied by preliminary results. The concept learning model is original and its application general. Applications exist in general science, engineering, earth resource management and economics. The developed system incorporates advances in machine learning, neural networks, object-oriented software engineering, knowledge representation and fuzzy logic. ' The specific application presented involves automatic earth resource modelling and assessment involving geological theories of mineral potential. The developed system functions as a new and powerful mineral exploration tool, To date the model has been trialled on an earth resource database and several published data sets. A more general potential application is knowledge discovery within databases. The specific theory that is tested in the experimental results is the nature of the cause-effect relationship between the hypothesised geological causes and the measured effects within a previously published test survey. Also integrated here are a neurophysiological cerebellar model of human learning, a new concept similarity measure for pattern recognition, modelled components to explain human concept formation through knowledge discovery and a means of permanent representation.The implementation is as a new artificial neural network architecture functioning as a hybrid expert system. Understanding of programmed concept learning is extended through the model. Also established is a basis for a new approach to multivariate data analysis. Spatial analysis for decision support is integrated over many dimensions, relationships, data types and data modes. Application of the developed methodology and system adds value to data bases. Discovered knowledge is represented as new generalisations, interpolations, classification hierarchies, aggregations and associations within a dynamic, maintainable and reusable integrated knowledge framework. New digital knowledge products and intelligent access follow. Permanently stored, maintainable, easily accessible and discovered knowledge improves decisions through extended hypothesis testing, spatial data analysis and inferencing, prediction, logical deductions and explanations.

Open pit optimization forms the basis of mine design, production planning and construction of mine facilities. The negative effects of this phase may include substantial reductions in ore recoveries, relocation of waste dumps and surface infrastructure, extraction of unwanted waste, with a cumulative effect on mine value reductions. As a result, this area has received significant research focus using linear and dynamic programming, heuristic, genetic and stimulation algorithms and the graph theory. These algorithms are derived from rigorous mathematical models, but they are built on the assumption that all the periodic production capacities are extracted at the time of analysis. This assumption weakens the models because mining occurs over significant time period. In order to develop a comprehensive model that accounts for the timing of material extraction, the current models, which are built on the economic block value (EBV) concept, must be modified to account for time. In this paper, the authors develop a model of the optimization problem using the 2-D Lerchs-Grossmann?s optimization algorithm. This model is used to investigate the effect of periodic discounting on the optimal pit layout design by designing an integrated pit optimiser (IPO) that incorporates ?production scheduling?. IPO uses the ensuing discounted economic block value (DEBV) as a basis for the pit optimisation process. The time-dependent model is compared with a time-independent model. The results show that discounting has no effect on the optimal pit contour although the reported pit value is overstated if the EBVs are used instead of the DEBV. The authors, however, believe that this conclusion may not be general and could have been influenced by the nature of ore body geometry and the proposed mining strategy.

The Barrick Osborne concentrator has gone through a number of upgrades since commissioning and has increased production from the original 119 t/h design capacity to a milling throughput of 265 t/h in 2008. This was achieved incrementally over several years, by maximising operating efficiencies, in order to minimise capital expenditure, and take advantages of economies of scale; but more importantly it was reached with no measurable loss of recovery. Osborne currently processes a blend of underground and open pit material from the nearby Trekelano deposit. Following primary/secondary crushing, the material is processed through a rod/ball mill grinding circuit ahead of rougher/scavenger flotation that produces a copper concentrate. Osborne was seeking a further increase in plant throughput of the order of 15 per cent, but at more sustainable levels of secondary crusher plant utilisation. In early 2008, Osborne contracted Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) to review the entire process from run-of-mine feed to final copper concentrate. This review would be done concurrently with surveys of both the crushing/grinding and flotation circuits being performed at the same time. The outcome would be a steady-state model of the complete flow sheet allowing the crushing/grinding model to interact with the flotation circuit model, such that overall process optimisation was possible. This was to apply both by exploring the operating limits of the currently installed plant, as well as looking at the logical next stage of capital plant expansions. Surveys of the crushing and grinding circuits were conducted at the Osborne concentrator in May 2008. The main objective of the surveys was to review the potential of increasing grinding throughput whilst maintaining the flotation feed 80 per cent passing size. This would also require improving the efficiency of the crushing circuit which was already operating in excess of 80 per cent of the time. Steady-state simulations were performed using the developed circuit models to identify opportunities to increase throughput and alleviate high circulating loads in both the secondary crushing and grinding circuits. Due to operational changes, the recommendations resulting from this project were considered by Osborne but have as yet only been partially implemented.  This paper covers part A or the crushing and grinding component of the project. A separate paper discussing part B or flotation is also being presented at this conference. The results of interactive simulations between the flotation and grinding circuit models are included in part B of this paper.

This paper covers Part B or the flotation component of the project. A separate paper discussing Part A or crushing and grinding is also being presented at this conference. Surveys of the Osborne flotation circuit were performed along with a comprehensive review of the cell characteristics including measurements of the gas and froth phases of individual flotation cells. These data resulted in a size-by-size floatability component model of the complete circuit. This circuit model was then used to perform steady-state simulat- ions to evaluate options to improve both overall circuit and individual cell performance. The grinding circuit model discussed in a separate paper or Part A of this project was then used interactively with the flotation circuit model to recommend the best operating regime to maximise overall efficiency. For example, the balance between increased crushing and grinding costs versus higher copper recovery and final concentrate grade. Due to changes in market conditions in the fourth quarter of 2008, the focus was shifted to prioritising operational changes rather than capital expansion modifications, in order to improve circuit performance.

The value derived by good mine planning is often underestimated as many mines steer their attention to the more immediate and more easily recognised successes made by the day-to-day operational æbush fireÆ fighting. Similar to machine maintenance, the efforts made to quickly rectify short-term breakdowns are well recognised; whereas the value derived from the work in planning, scheduling and undertaking preventative maintenance is not so obvious or readily quantified. Too often the focus of the business shifts to building and supporting an efficient operations team at the expense of developing a highly experienced team of mine planning practitioners that are well trained with procedures and purpose-built tools to develop optimum mining strategies. A resource has an inherent value based on its quality parameters and its likely mining conditions. How well that value can be unlocked is governed, to a large degree, by the proficiency of the mine planning practitioners, as they, essentially, set the foundation of the mine business and the path along which the mine will operate. The importance of having a well documented and procedural mine planning methodology that integrates both a thorough technical and economic understanding of the resource cannot be over emphasised. The aim of the mine planning process is to develop a robust mine design and production capability which can best cater for future uncertainty whilst providing the best opportunity to maximise cash flow into the business. The planning process must be transparent and auditable, clearly summarising the process steps and assumptions made to arrive at a justifiable and defendable outcome. To provide maximum value to the business, the planning process must be repeatable and scalable to enable easy replication throughout the different mines and projects within an organisation.
